This Issue is Dedicated to My Dad At 7:23 a.m. on July 6th my life significantly changed. I woke up to the phone ringing and the caller ID was my younger brother. I knew something was wrong before I even said hello. I hung up the phone and began to weep. Actually, I wanted to cry, but was so confused by emotions that I could only say "no" over and over again tearlessly. How could this be? He had texted me on July 4th and we had spent 29 minutes talking baseball, basketball, where he'd been dancing, and all about his health only the day before. I will never be more thankful for a half hour conversation about nothing in my life. I wish I could have said more. Here's what I wanted to say. *As I write this as we get ready for press I would like to ask for a pass on my publisher’s note. This isn't for you, this is for my Dad. Dad, I want you to know that I love you very much. I know you didn't like to say those words very much but I could see it in your eyes. You came from a world where you had to be tough. We have photos of you picking cotton on a farm when you were 4 years old. It was the only way you could earn money for sodas or a movie. You worked for 19 years in a creamery. You went to work every day in your white

uniform, with leather belt and workboots. You lifted 50-pound bag after bag for eight hours a day to put food on our table. Life for you was never easy. You came home exhausted but always had time to hit grounders to your two boys or play a little catch. You made it clear that you loved us whether you said it or not. I just want to say thank you. Your toughness made me better. Your work ethic is my work ethic. All of the pushing and yelling and love of sports made me competitive enough to succeed in this world. I know I never made it easy on you. I always knew too much and never let you win an argument—I'm sorry for that. I hope one thing, that as you watch over my life, my family’s life, and your family’s life; know you made a difference—every time I grit and bite my tongue when I'm angry, everytime I yell at the TV when my team loses, every time I'm tough on my kids, and especially every time I win. Know that is because of you. Not goodbye, just see you later. I love you Dad. We all do. Erik Rest in Peace Otis Ray Hale 9/25/45-7/6/2016 "O Table Dot Snake"

Making THE ISSUE

For LOCALE Magazine’s San Diego September cover story, our team was thrilled to work with The Chainsmokers, Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall. Their hits “Closer” and “Roses” made an impression on music lovers and their cool, laidback demeanor left an impression on our team. Our photographer Taso was very pleased for the opportunity to shoot studio work with The Chainsmokers. For the cover, he worked with a custom designed on-camera ring flash—built exclusively for his camera and aesthetic—by Silvino Gamboa. Stylist Manuel thought Andrew and Alex had a fresh aesthetic and radiated “such cool vibes.” That energy was what he and his assistant, Joshua, built off of. They mixed well-known designers with emerging talents—even one from Southern California—and created an overall look that was exemplary of their DNA. Manuel added, “Their hit song ‘Don’t Let Me Down’ went double-platinum as our shoot was taking place and I think it shows.” Beauty Stylist Nicole Del Rio complemented the fashion styling of Manuel and Joshua, giving Andrew and Alex a relaxed and tousled look.

SUCH GREAT

HEIGHTS EXPERT: Brianna Cook CREDENTIALS: Operations Manager, iFLY San Diego

Ò Mondays are an all work, and a little bit of play, kind of day. Each one starting with a large iced vanilla hazelnut Americano, and if I can get away, a yoga session at Bird Rock Yoga! bestyogasandiego.com

Ò Taco Tuesdays are my absolute favorite day of the week and living here in SD, we are afforded amazing options! From Carnitas Snack Shack, Puesto, Tacos El Gordo, Coasterra, Blind Burro, La Puerto, Miguel’s to Lucha Libre Gourmet Taco Shop, each is raising the bar! eatpuesto.com

Ò iFLY San Diego is a happening spot on Fridays, with families, corporate events, skydivers and first-time flyers all trying to get in the tunnel for some air time. If you haven’t tried out San Diego’s First Indoor Skydiving Facility, I would definitely recommend it.

Ò I love Wednesdays because it means we are getting over the hump of the week, and what better way to celebrate than with a nice cold beer. My favorite is a nitro, vanilla cream ale, which can be found at Underbelly! godblessunderbelly.com

Ò Thirsty Thursdays are a great night to go out with your friends and experience more of that local feel. Backyard has a fun 90s night and Kettner Exchange is one of the many beautiful spots in Little Italy (my current favorite neighborhood to explore). kettnerexchange.com

Sunday Funday is epic in San Diego! Even with the average wait time being 1.5 hours—the food is always worth it.

Ò This day is great for a refresh. A morning yoga session on the beach, paddle boarding on Mission Bay and a delicious 50/50 from Northside Shack are my go-tos. My goal for this day is to relax and regroup.

Ò Mike Hess Brewing in North Park. I alternate between Hess and Border X Brewing. Beer…and more beer. Yum.

Ò I’m laying low to conserve for my high caloric week ahead. I contemplate the idea of trying to ride my bike today, or go for a run, but ultimately stay on the couch with my wife and binge watch Netflix.

Ò I’ll be at the Playhouse late for rehearsals, so I drop into Ortega’s Bistro for happy hour in Hillcrest on my way home. 10 p.m. to midnight, a cold Bohemia and Poblano Queso Tacos. ortegas.com

mikehessbrewing.com

Ò I’m catching a show over at Moxie Theatre. Gutsy, adventurous work produced by female artists with the specific aim of exploding stereotypes of women in society.

Ò Heading back to the Playhouse for a show. I drop into James’ Place right next door to feast on some sushi rolls (try the 808!), and a hot sake before I catch a world premiere play or musical running at any one of our four theaters.

LIFE

Ò Friday is often my movie night, either in or out. I recently checked out The LOT in La Jolla and loved it. I don’t know if I can watch a movie out any other way now... big leather recliners, atseat dinner and beverage service—yes please. thelotent.com

Ò I’m fortunate to be able to walk to many great places in Pacific Beach and Mission Beach from my house, and so many of them are pet friendly so I can bring my dog, Bella, too. The first thought on Monday morning is coffee, and a short walk on the baywalk gets me to Swell Coffee Co. John Vallas has put so much time and energy into finding the best coffee sources and flavors on the planet. His passion for coffee is fierce!

Ò Wednesday is my winedown day, like many of us. I love the wines at Blue Door Winery just outside of PB. Owners Marc and Kami Hashagen are great people, and they make some stellar red wines. You’ll go for a taste and leave with a membership and new friends. thebluedoorwinery.com

I love driving on the sand down to the water line, opening up the tailgate, and just relaxing.

swellcoffeeco.com

Ò For some weird reason I think of tacos on Tuesday...which always leads me to Pacific Beach Fish Shop for lunch. I love the variety, even though I often order the same exact thing (salmon, Fish Shop seasoning). A side of the spicy Hawaiian bbq sauce seals the deal.

Ò On Saturday I often take my dog Bella to Fiesta Island. I love driving on the sand down to the water line, opening up the tailgate, and just relaxing while she swims and digs for a couple hours. If I’ve thought ahead I have a Tub ‘o Tuna sandwich from Board & Brew or a smoothie from the Mad Beet.

Ò My favorite restaurant in San Diego is the Patio on Lamont. The layout creates an amazing atmosphere that balances energy and intimacy at the same time. I tend to go on Thursdays since I never plan ahead, and I get there early enough to enjoy the half-off Cool Cocktails at happy hour and my favorite beef & bleu flatbread.

Ò Sunday morning I’m surfing or I’m on my bike and I have mimosas on my mind. I love the mimosa flights from Crushed. If it’s the afternoon, I’m at PB Alehouse or Amplified out on the patio having a couple of their craft brews. barcrushed.com pbalehouse.com amplifiedales.com

Sugar RUSH iDessert is Satisfying San Diego’s Sweet Tooth

WRITTEN BY: NICOLE FERA

Over the years we have seen and tasted a lot of tantalizing treats in the world of desserts, but nothing like what iDessert and Chef Jean-Philippe Maury have brought to San Diego. The innovative desserts bring together all kinds of textures, flavors and ingredients that can be arranged and paired together in whatever way our hearts desire. Simply sit down at one of the iPad stations, choose what looks good to you, and in mere moments you will have the dessert of your dreams handcrafted just for you. Don’t worry though, if your creativity runs a bit dry, you can always order one of Chef Maury’s favorites—he won’t steer you wrong. These creations include customized desserts that are all made with the freshest ingredients and dreamed up by you. Here’s how it works: first, you will choose from a number of different crusts such as chocolate, coffee, M&M’s, Oreo cookies, or pistachios. Then your gelato flavor must be selected—may we suggest sweet yet pleasantly tart raspberry? After gelato

is the cream, which comes in vanilla, strawberry and other fan favorites— even dairy free! Next, you will need to choose your cake flavor. Cake flavors come in vanilla, chocolate, lemon, and banana. Lastly, you can load up on all the sauce, fruit, and crunch that your heart desires and get it all served up in one of their Vegas Bowls. iDessert also offers completely customizable sundaes and milkshakes. For the sundae, you can select up to two gelato flavors, a sauce, fresh fruits, some crunch, and whipped cream. For the milkshake, you can choose from one of the eight gelato/sorbet flavors, add some crunch, and finished it all off with whipped cream. Whatever sweet treat you fancy, iDessert will make all of your dessert dreams come true.

NATIVE KNOWLEDGE 1. There are a lot of Dairy Free options at iDessert, so you can build your very own bowl without the worry by using ingredients such as the dairy free cream and delicious berry compote. Something special for everyone! 2. If you are temporarily insane for the day and not in the mood for one of these dessert creations, you can also order up a customized milkshake or sundae. The options here are endless!

CHEF JEANPHILIPPE MAURY’S FAVORITE DESSERT BOWLS 1. Fruity: Raspberry crust, strawberry sorbet, vanilla cream, vanilla cake, berry sauce, and warm berry compote. 2. Intense: Oreo crust, Chocolate gelato, coffee cream, chocolate cake, vanilla sauce. 3. Exotic: Vanilla crust, exotic sorbet, vanilla cream, banana cake, exotic sauce, warm exotic fruit, and white chocolate pearls. 4. BEHIND bars Willem Van Leuven Creates Refreshing Combinations Behind the Bar of a New San Diego Hot-Spot

WRITTEN BY: TAMARA PHILIPS PHOTOGRAPHED BY: JOSIE GONZALEZ

THE EXPER T

WILLEM VAN LEUVEN Lead Bartender at Herb & Wood

Across the Border: Willem loves to head down to Tijuana for the food and bar scene

WILLEM VAN LEUVEN has been managing bars and consulting on cocktail programs in Los Angeles and San Diego for the past six years. As lead bartender at one of Little Italy’s newest Brian Malarkey restaurant creations, Herb & Wood, Willem is eager to continue creating bright and refreshing drinks. With his herb inspired cocktails to pair with Brian’s rustic dishes, you’re in for a treat from the start to finish of your experience. And if you’re lucky, maybe Willem will snap one of his infamous selfies with you upon your visit.

Bracero

2.

3.

4.

Cantina Mayahuel

Q

How did you form the variety of herb inspired drinks offered at Herb & Wood? WVL: I’ve had a bit of experience using herbs as infusions with spirits in the past, so I had a good idea of what flavors would work well when Brian and the team asked me to incorporate herbs into cocktails. I tend to like creating bright, citrusy, refreshing cocktails, so I worked on flavor combinations that would pair well with specific herbs.

Q: HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN BARTENDING? Willem Van Leuven: I’ve been in the hospitality industry for the past 17 years, working every position from host, server, to general manager. My first bartending job was at a wine bar in Pasadena, and I helped run a cocktail bar attached to the back. The restaurant hired Ben Browning as a bar consultant, and that’s when I really caught the bug to focus on well-crafted cocktails. I’ve been managing bars and consulting on cocktail programs in LA and SD for the past six years.

Q: And the dessert cocktails? WVL: For the dessert cocktails, I wanted to focus on those classic dessert flavors, coffee, chocolate, cherry, orange, cream. The three featured cocktails are all great combinations using those flavor elements. Q: It’s been said you are well-versed in agave spirits. How did you make the transition from this style to herb inspired cocktails? WVL: The transition was very easy. Herbal elements are usually used as modifiers in the form of infusions or syrups, while agave spirits are almost always utilized as a main ingredient. Pairing the two in a cocktail is just about finding the perfect balance through trial and error. Q: Can we expect to see new drink additions coming to the menu anytime soon? WVL: Absolutely! I’m continuously coming up with new flavor combinations using different fresh juices and unique ingredients. We’ll most likely run a special for a while, and then switch out the cocktail menu offerings seasonally, usually every three to four months. Q: What is it like working with celebrity Chef Brian Malarkey? WVL: I’ve always enjoyed working in a restaurant with a passionate chef. Both Brian and Shane helped inspire my creative process by setting a high standard for flavors and unique combinations. I really admire what they’re doing in the kitchen, and I want the cocktails to match that same caliber of passion. Q: How did managing restaurants previously prepare you for this lead bartender role? WVL: To me, managing restaurants is all about balancing different personalities to achieve a unified goal. Having worked in hospitality for so

46 | LOCALE MAGAZINE

long, I’ve learned that it’s important for me to lead by example in everything I do behind the bar. From how to talk to guests, constantly having a positive mental attitude, to how to talk to other team members. Q: So, you’re the SD chapter President of the U.S. Bartenders’ Guild. What does this entail and how did you land this exciting opportunity? WVL: When the previous president, Jen Queen, left to go travel to Asia, she left the position open. I stepped into that role at the beginning of 2015, and I worked on helping restructure the guild with a new fresh focus. I was officially voted in by the chapter members for 2016, and my term will last until the end of 2017. Along with the rest of the cabinet, we plan monthly events focusing on education, philanthropy, and just good, clean fun. Q: When you’re not mixing up your own drinks, where do you like to grab a cocktail and a good meal in the SD area? WVL: I tend to stick to my favorites, Bracero for the lamb taco and a mezcal paloma, Lion’s Share for the tartare and Bacanora, Turf Club for the Delmonico and a Sneaky Tiki, and Cantina Mayahuel for the mole and Fortaleza reposado with a can of Modelo. You can usually find me at any of those places after work or on my nights off. Q: What makes a great cocktail? WVL: A great cocktail isn’t just about the ingredients. It’s a combination of things, including the person making it, the ambience, and usually the company you’re with when enjoying it. When all those elements are in unison, it turns into a fantastic experience that people tend to love and cherish. Q: Have you created any concoctions that sounded great, but just didn’t work out? WVL: I’ve been tinkering with trying to get some sort of cheese into a cocktail, but I have not yet been successful. Stay tuned! Q: Tell us a Fun Fact about you! WVL: Tijuana has a blossoming food and bar scene, I try to make it down there at least twice a month with a group of friends. I tend to snap a selfie with all my friends in front of the Mexico sign before we cross over. They’re pretty famous. #WillsFamousSelfies

San Diego’s Newest Sandwich Spot WRITTEN BY: TYLER HOLLAND PHOTOGRAPHED BY: BRADLEY BLACKBURN As summer weather is year-around, the need to find a restaurant that serves the perfect beach meal is a necessity: the kind of meal that will satiate you and leave you feeling good about your decision. Beach Hut Deli offers the perfect medley: high-quality sandwiches delivered in an atmosphere conducive to San Diego’s laid-back vibe just steps from the Marriott and the world famous USS Midway. With humble beginnings in Northern California, Troy Feist opened a video arcade at the age of 18, where he started making sandwiches so his friends would not go hungry. The little deli has since expanded over the years with locations from Reno to Newport Beach. San Diego finally has the pleasure of welcoming this establishment to its sundrenched shores. The restaurant has a full liquor license and will be working with San Diego born and raised coffee company, Ryan’s Brothers, to accommodate those with the need for a caffeine pick-me-up. Each location of Beach Hut Deli is unique, focusing on the culture and local brewing scene of their city—each venue manages to maintain that warm, cozy feeling that made the original restaurant so popular. Think of it as an extension of home where everyone is made to feel welcome. Whether you’re in Northern or Southern California, you can expect to find good food, great music and delicious craft beer at Beach Hut Deli. What more could you ask for?

TYLER AXTELL Founder of Bradley Mountain

Dream adventure destination: Camper tour of the Canadian National Parks

When Tyler Axtell purchased his first sewing machine following a trip abroad some five years ago, he didn’t know that he was stitching together the beginnings of the proverbial location of a lifetime: Bradley Mountain. While this locale is fictitious in the traditional sense, the now six-man Bradley Mountain crew have definitely secured themselves a spot on the map. From camping packs to mountaineering musts, these craftsmen create anything and everything needed for a night beneath the stars. Wanderlusters everywhere are grateful for the reminder to embark on an amazing expedition with exceptional gear. After all...behind every great adventurer is a great backpack...literally.

“WE DESIGN GEAR FOR THE TRAVELER WHO WANTS SOMETHING RUGGED AND DIFFERENT ON THEIR BACK.” —TYLER AXTELL

BRADLEY MOUNTAIN www.bradleymountain.com @bradleymountain LOCALE MAGAZINE | 55

Q: HOW LONG HAVE YOU GUYS (BRADLEY MOUNTAIN CREW) KNOWN EACH OTHER? Tyler Axtell: Basically, we’re all locals who met along the way and are passionate about what we do. I started working on the brand on my own about five years ago. Andrew came on the scene about a year after that; and TJ, our production manager, and I used to live together in the house where Bradley Mountain started, in my garage in Ocean Beach. We’ve since grown to a team of six and we’re all local to San Diego and reside in the Downtown area near Balboa Park.

Q: Tell us about the adventurous beginnings of this journey-based brand. TA: When I turned 18, I spent a year traveling and soaked in a lot of ancient European culture. I hadn’t been exposed to such craftsmanship prior, and that experience is what sparked my desire to learn a trade. Upon my return, I was living in Ocean Beach, right near the water, and basically turned my one car garage into a workshop. We added in a couple of tables and I set up a sewing machine that I bought from an old apparel factory. My mom taught me the basics of sewing and I took the reins from there. My parents own their own business and I grew up working for them, which taught me a lot about small businesses. Q: Talk about your backgrounds; did any of you envision yourselves where you are today career-wise? TA: It’s kind of crazy none of us have studied this! TJ’s craftsman start was similar to mine; he was making bags and wallets while living in Portland before I knew him. Neither of us had any formal training, but TJ brought in the same vibe that I was trying to cultivate at Bradley Mountain. Cody has a lot of experience in video production so he adds a nice element in the domains of marketing and photography, etc. But, to be honest, we’re all basically doing this for the first time and none of us have worked for a brand like this before. We don’t have investors, we handle all aspects of the business ourselves, and it’s all been a labor of love. Q: Do you guys adventure together for ‘research’ and recreation? TA: Yes! We all go camping together and try to

56

do at least two group trips a year. We went up to Yosemite last year and we frequently camp in some local spots in California. Running the business is a lot of hard work, so that keeps us busy, but our trips are key in testing out our gear and developing new ideas for the brand. Q: Where do your adventure-tools come in handy the most? TA: We make gear particularly for the people who want to travel light and travel far. Whether it’s for a trip to Europe, Asia, national, or international— we design gear for the traveler who wants something rugged and different on their back. Q: Where do you draw product style and inspiration from for your unique products? TA: Our designs are a fusion of old European and old American travel gear. Essentially, a combination of old, Swiss military packs and vintage Boy Scout gear. Throughout the design process, I try not to look at what other people or other companies are doing. I like to come from a point of function and aesthetic, as opposed to style. For instance, we don’t like to add a single stitch or piece of leather that’s primary purpose isn’t functionality. Q: Favorite adventure memories among the Bradley Mountain creators? TA: We’ve had a lot of them! Probably our best adventure was when got a cabin up in Strawberry, California and spent the next day exploring Yosemite and playing games outside by the cabin. Another was going to Big Sur for some hiking and exploring the waterfalls. All of the materials used

MOVIN’ ON UP Bradley Mountain has since relocated from its humble beginnings within Tyler’s garage to a workshop at Moniker Group in East Village. NATIVE KNOWLEDGE While you can purchase all Bradley Mountain merch online, their adventurous products can be found in a number of local stores including Lone Flag in Del Mar and Moniker General at Liberty Station. INTO THE WILDER “We want it to sound like the feel it puts off. The Wilder embodies the person who is most excited to get out there...they’re going to go the longest and just be wild.”

for the products we make are natural, so getting to see the ocean and mountains is like being around what we’ve been building.

“WE DON’T HAVE FEAR OF OTHER PEOPLE’S SUCCESS...WE ARE REALLY CONFIDENT IN WHAT WE DO AND WE WANT TO SUPPORT OTHER PEOPLE DOING THE SAME THING.” —TYLER AXTELL

Q: What is “Bradley Mountain?” TA: It’s the name of a fictitious place I created where people can cast their dreams and adventures. We try to encourage and empower people to pull the trigger on their ideas and travel plans, and we hope to convey that through making quality products. Sometimes people have intentions of taking a trip but they put it off for years, postpone booking tickets or struggle to pick a destination. Bradley Mountain is that destination. Q: Any Bradley Mountain-eering must-haves that you recommend? TA: The Wilder is our ultimate travel bag. It’s comfortable, it carries a lot, and if you’re looking to travel at length you could survive a few weeks on it. It’s also modular so you can clip a sleeping bag and hang your jacket on the side straps. Q: Any Bradley Mountain favorites or bestsellers among adventure-seekers? TA: We’ve been super surprised by this, but our bestseller is The Wilder bag, which is our highest end product. Another recent popular item has been our Dopp Kit, which is an everyday grooming kit and great for traveling. Q: What’s on the horizon for Bradley Mountain? Any new products in the works that we can look forward to for our next expedition? TA: We recently released an all-leather camera strap and, at present, we’re working on launching two new bags! One is a simplified version of The Biographer and the other, The Ranger, is a cross between a duffle and a tool bag. It’s got a great open top and is a catch-all bag with seven pockets around the side...great for going to and from work or going on picnics, etc. We’ve got a few other surprises in the works. Other than that, we’ve got lots of dreams for Bradley Mountain and beyond, but we’re not yet sure what lies ahead. Q: Where are you and the Bradley Mountain crew traveling next? TA: We have some small trips planned that are work and event related. Nothing is set in stone yet, but I’m working on preparations for a group trip to Alaska next spring. Q: When you’re not creating wanderlust wonders, what are some other hobbies or passions? TA: Just regular stuff, we have movie nights in our workshop, we all love camping. I recently got married! The main thing we’re passionate about is trying our best to support the work of other makers. Some people get really competitive in this field because it feels fragile, but we’re building our business off of values and promote other leather workers as much as we can. We don’t have fear of other people’s success...we are really confident in what we do and we want to support other people doing the same thing.

With “Roses” and “Don’t Let Me Down” the world made The Chainsmokers a multi-platinum success story, now the duo are embarking on a new mission: to show the world that the line between dance music and pop music has disappeared. From an early age, DJ duo DREW TAGGART and ALEX PALL, aka THE CHAINSMOKERS, strived to distance themselves from musical normalcy. The artists navigated outside of the NYC club scene at first, but in 2012, they came together thanks to music manager Adam Alpert. What began as a series of electro-pop infused remixes soon blossomed into producing their own original pop-coated EDM-style material. With the mainstream’s appropriation of dance culture, they exploded onto that scene with their first hit “#SELFIE” which put them on the global EDM map. They rapidly went from making beats in their house to playing the world’s biggest festivals. They followed up with a streak of double-platinum hit songs like “Roses” and “Don’t Let Me Down” whose genre-bending combo of indie loneliness and head-dropping trap breakdown became one of the most streamed songs of 2016. With expansive guitar lines, the song opens with vocal talents of teenage singer Daya, then when the trap beat climax drops, it’s clear to see why it became the new EDM feel-good anthem. “We started making music together as a duo and our ambition was to break into the dance music scene as that’s what we were both infatuated with at the time. That is kind of how it kind of all started,” Taggart explains. “We just started making music and didn’t really have a direction of what we were trying to do initially, but after that initial trial and error phase, about four months in, we started getting momentum. We were both determined to treat it like a job and get together every day and just focus on creating music and building the brand as The Chainsmokers into something bigger.” Pall added that the significant part for him was “making good music and really pushing ourselves to create a brand that was inherent of who we are, by being super interactive with our fans while developing that relationship in a real, genuine way. But honestly making good records that people love—that inspire them, is what’s important to us. There’s no way to hack it. There’s a lot of gimmicky stuff out there but you can’t hack success in the music business.” After their early success, the duo’s latest music is a calculated departure from their past catalog, circumventing the trap that a lot of artists repeatedly fall into. For an act fairly new to the EDM scene, they’ve made a point of never making the same song twice. “After the whole ‘Selfie’ thing, we just said fuck it. We weren’t having as much fun making it anymore so we took a step back and started again, went back to all the stuff we used to listen to. We let the indie music we’ve always loved, and the hip-hop and a bunch of other genres start influencing the stuff we were creating and started making stuff that wasn’t for the club or for the radio,” Taggart says that they started making stuff that they’d actually listen to. “After [playing] the major-label record label business game we were like, let’s just do our own thing and hope it works. With that mentality we created ‘Roses’ and ‘Don’t Let Me Down.’ I think that’s when we really discovered our sound and decided what to say,” Taggart adds. “We’re really lucky that the songs have had success. One of the most valuable things you can achieve as an artist is success doing things your way and it’s really empowering when it works. We want to keep doing things that are unexpected and fun, music we really enjoyed making.”

They explain that they work entirely hand-in-hand with each other when making music. “We work together in the studio all the time, we do everything together. We produce everything together so we’re very much on the same page. I don’t think I could ever make this stuff at the caliber that we’re making it right now by myself and I don’t think Alex could either because we need each other to balance each other out. Everyone needs someone to bounce ideas off of, even if you’re super prolific and on your own, you need someone who will keep you out of your own head and keep you on the channel to greatness. If I was on my own, I would never finish anything, so we balance each other and I think we rely on each other for that.” The duo have never been shy about their influences. For inspiration on their latest crop of songs, the team took to rediscovering their musical past. Shuttling between hiphop, moody indie rock, emo mall punk, hardcore metal, and even minimalist trap music. To The Chainsmokers, their new material is something of an amalgamation of all the stuff they grew up loving. “It’s different for every song. We love all of types of music, Alex and I, which is why I think we became such good friends,” Taggart says. “We both had the extreme phases where we would be so into hip-hop and knew everything about hip-hop. Then I was really into screamo and hardcore stuff and then I was into all of the emo punk stuff. Later it was Bon Iver, Passion Pit and Grizzly Bear, all these indie bands that were killing it around 2009, 2010. If you listen to ‘Roses’ that was influenced by Flume, Taylor Swift and Grouplove. Those were the three main influences for that song. ‘Don’t Let Me Down’ was influenced by Explosions in the Sky and The XX.” In “Don’t Let Me Down” that dance-inducing trap drop, all started with the desire to impress a girl. “I had started dating this girl who loved trap music and I’ve never made a trap song and to be quite honest with you, I wanted to impress her,” Drew admits. “She’s my current girlfriend and I was trying to make a trap beat and the first thing I made was the drop for ‘Don’t Let Me Down.’ Then we combined that with the lonely guitar rift. It’s become pretty iconic, which is kind of crazy.”

81

Pall adds: “We always tried to combine two contrasting genres because that’s what makes truly interesting pop music.”

down and enjoy the singles without feeling like they’re going to get stepped on by kids doing ecstasy.”

As far as lyrics go, “Pretty much everything we make is pulled from either my life or Alex’s life. We’re going through a lot of the same things and our vibe and mood is very much on point,” Taggart points out. “When we write music we try to get it as specifically personal as possible so you know when you’re hearing a Chainsmokers song, [you] really know what we’re going through right now.”

They aimed to separate themselves from other DJs with their approach to their performances. “Why can’t we just stop and show a movie trailer in the middle of our set? Why can’t we stop the DJ set and perform a song with the piano? Why can’t I make it not like a whole rave? I think Alex is definitely pioneering that for us,” Drew adds. I think once it works, if it’s successful, which I think it’s going to be, it’s going to change the way everyone goes about DJing for a show and what do DJing can be and what a live performance can be for all genres. That’s a really exciting place that we’re headed right now.”

Taggart elaborates: “Now we have the confidence to make stuff that’s about us. We wrote ‘Closer’ about those shallow club girls that you meet, or girls that I used to date who I was so enamored with for the wrong reasons—girls that you hook up with for a certain reason and then you see them in a club and they look really good and you want to hook up with them again, then you do and you remember all the reasons why you hated them,” Taggart says. “So I wanted to make an unsexy sex song. The lyrics are very specific, very vivid, and it’s about something that’s super real to us.” The chart-topping “Closer” was their opportunity to create something on a personal level, while also collaborating with artists such as edgy indie-pop princess Halsey. “Closer” also marks Taggart’s first time singing lead vocals. “I’ve never sung before except some backing vocals on ‘Roses,’ I’ve never been straight up the main voice in a song. However, when our very good friend and up and coming producer, Shaun Frank, was on tour with us and we were writing some of the lyrics together he said ‘You can sing this,’ and I was like, I don’t know about that. But he got me to trust him and basically showed me how to make my voice sound good without being super processed on the song.” Pall and Taggart are working to personalize a genre that is oft void of emotional substance. The band aims to add more of a human element to their brand of dance music and part of that means being more than just knob pushers behind a booth. “Our set has changed dramatically over the course of two years, in addition to our own music, and that gets us thinking more about how we can play up the energy in each of our shows. Including integrating singing. We have a great team of production people that help us create a dynamic show. We worked six months putting together a stage concept and we want people to come to the show and see something that they’ve never seen before from us,” Pall explains. The Chainsmokers aim to thrill those EDM fans looking for more substance, as well as feel their teeth shake. “It’s about easing people into new ideas. For the last year, we’ve been putting more effort into the performance instead of on strictly a DJ set, while giving people the visual aids and moments that you want in the show,” Taggart responds. “Both Alex and I are really pushing each other to do more work. We wanted to show people that we’re more than just DJs. But still, we are not a band, so we’re just going to ease people into the idea that we do a lot more than just dance DJ’s. We want that balance of getting people that come to party and jump around for two hours and also people who want to sit

82

As Pall and Taggart talk about their upcoming live show there’s a palpable sense of pride and excitation in their voices. “You have to continue to give the people something you are excited for, otherwise they’ll see the same thing twice and then lose interest, it’s just simple human nature. And it’s the same thing for us,” Pall continues. “If we don’t look like we’re enjoying ourselves then that transfers to the crowd. We can create a show that keeps us challenged and excited when we pull it off and that translates for a great show for fans. The last tour that we did was about having crazy energy as DJs, but now we want to give people more than just a DJ set, something that everyone could hold onto. So it’s about creating a show that allows the music to perform the way it’s supposed to be performed, but also give people—give everybody—a little bit of what they want. Let’s do a show that is a DJ show but unlike anyone has ever seen before.” With all the moving parts of their pending tour and the pressure to advance their music and keep the bar set high, I ask if they ever feel pressure to keep churning out singles that become huge hits. “I think both of us are really genuinely making music that we both want to listen to, so that’s always the impetus over success. We are huge music fans and we listen to everything that’s out there, so I think that’s given us a pretty fresh radar since we don’t like making stuff that sounds like anything we’ve done before or anything that someone else has done. I don’t think we could finish a song that we didn’t personally feel pushed the envelope in that direction,” Pall answers. “But yeah, there’s pressure to make it and we’d love to have hits consistently forever, like some other people from my genre like David Guetta and Calvin Harris, but I don’t think we really have a plan to do anything other than make stuff that we want to listen to. Having hits is important but having fans that know you and love you for the music that you make is way more important. That’s more of what we are after.” That’s evidenced in their modest lifestyle, too. They aren’t collecting Lamborghinis, bottle popping or vetting an agenda to own the most collectible sneakers. Instead of buying supercars and Rolexes with their first big paycheck, they bought pets. “Neither of us have cars. When everything started going double platinum instead of buying gold chains and cars, we bought dogs,” Pall chuckles. “We still fly coach everywhere and we don’t give a shit.”

Sand Cloud began as a simple thought. Brandon Leibel was napping on the beach one afternoon after work when the idea came to him. “What if beach towels came with pillows attached?” This passing thought would grow into not only a unique and exquisite towel brand, but a representation for a cause that is so much bigger, supporting the preservation of beaches like the very one on which this idea began.

“Anything we can do makes a difference in a crucial way. We all share the ocean and beach. It helps the human race, marine life and the beaches.” —Brandon Leibel, Sand Cloud Founder

Enamored with this idea of creating his own towel brand, Leibel joined up with his friends, Steven Ford and Bruno Aschidamini. Together, they wanted to make a difference, not only in towel manufacturing but in the world. “We always knew we wanted to partner with a cause we believe in,” Leibel says. As a resident of San Diego, Leibel loves the beach, so naturally preserving beaches was an issue that he was passionate about. “The beach is a part of our lifestyle,” Leibel says. “It’s about the quality of life for us and the sea life. There are animals washing up every day. It’s a huge issue.”

T

he business expanded quickly. After starting Sand Cloud, Leibel quit his job. Leibel, Ford, and Aschidamini moved into a small apartment together, where they worked near 24-hour days to coordinate everything to make Sand Cloud a success. They decided to hire manufacturing from Turkey to get the highest quality towels available, despite having to overcome the daily struggle of language and time zone barriers. Sand Cloud initially began with 100 towels, which they sold to family and friends, and has grown ever since. A social cause isn’t realized by simply manufacturing and selling a product, however. Leibel knew that, like any good cause, the word had to be spread, awareness had to be earned, and a reputation had to be made. On top of the stresses of forming a new business, Leibel, Ford and Aschidamini ran their own social media site, posting messages, sending emails, and building brand awareness. Many weekends saw the three of them walking up and down the beach, adding Instagram followers on the spot and spreading the word of their company with the local beachgoers who were also passionate about keeping their favorite beach spots clean. However, Sand Cloud wasn’t built on their efforts alone. Leibel began an Ambassador program made of people who are passionate and active about preserving marine life to help support the cause. Ambassadors help promote Sand Cloud on social media and drive the brand into regions beyond where Leibel himself could reach. These Ambassadors receive discounts on items, are featured on social media accounts, sneak peeks at future products, and will often be asked opinions to vote on new towel designs, all while knowing that

88

their donations and efforts are going towards preserving the very beaches their towels decorate. They’re a real part of the team. “We put aside our pride and ask the people what they want,” says Leibel. “It makes them more interested.” Through these efforts, Sand Cloud is now a thriving business that proudly supports ocean life preservation through organizations like the Pacific Marine Mammal Center, a rehabilitation organization that rescues marine mammals and nurtures them back to health before returning them to the wild. Other organizations Sand Cloud supports include San Diego Coastkeeper and the Surfrider Foundation. “We picked what feels right,” says Leibel. “They’re good people, we knew where the money was going and we knew we’re making a difference.” Now, after celebrating its two-year anniversary in May, Sand Cloud is still expanding, growing and making a difference. Although the team is still small and concentrated, Leibel, Ford and Aschidamini have their own office, complete with interns, independent contractors and people to help with delivery. The three are still heavily hands-on invested in their cause. Last June, Sand Cloud hosted a beach cleanup in San Diego. Partnering with San Diego Coast Keepers, Leibel and his team, along with roughly 50 Ambassadors, picked up over 30 pounds of trash from the coast. Although the small Sand Cloud team is becoming incredibly busy, they hope to schedule another beach cleanup day sometime this year. “Anything we can do makes a difference in a crucial way,” says Leibel. “We all share the ocean and beach. It helps the human race, marine life and the beaches.”

Many Ways to Wrap:

• There are many ways to style a Sand Cloud towel. “They’re so multi-functional,” says Leibel. “I’ve seen them used as a towel at the beach, a wrap, a wall tapestry, even as bedding decoration as you can see on Instagram and social media.” Leibel is happy with

any way these beautiful towels are displayed. “They’re buying into a cause and that’s the best part.”

How to help keep your beach clean:

• “Clean up after yourself—trash is going to end up in the ocean if it’s not in a can. Recycle trash on the street. If you see trash, pick it up,” Leibel says.

CHOOSE MOOD

“If the recipient has a favorite, I like to use that as a focal flower or their favorite color as a highlight and then work with what’s in season to accompany it.”

90 | LOCALE MAGAZINE

“Flowers are a luxurious, flattering gift, meant to evoke a specific emotion in the moment rather than be a piece of decor in one’s home.”

“Focus on the mood you want to create at the event and go from there rather than being concerned with the color of the carpet and drapes.”

#4 SET THE VIBE

“Classy might include more traditional flowers such as hydrangea and roses, while casual might include some fun pods or unique elements like kale. If you were celebrating something specific such as a birthday or congratulations, I would suggest hot, vibrant colors to help the flowers pop and make it feel more like a party atmosphere. For romance, use more subtle color palettes such as softer tones of pale pink and peach, you can even mix in a deep wine or burgundy tone for a little more drama.”

Gates’ longevity in a physically demanding sport has him on the cusp of tying the record for most touchdown catches by a tight end, which is currently held by retired perennial Pro Bowler Tony Gonzalez with 111. At 104, Gates has a shot to break the record during the 2016 season and while team goals are the main objective, the tight end’s quarterback, Philip Rivers would like to see him break the record. “I’m fired up about this year,” Rivers said. “Our objective is team goals first, but I’d like to see him get there.”

It’s coming along, just got to continue to build and get more reps and get better. That’s all I’m focused on right now. Q: What are you looking forward to when the season starts, do you have any teams circled on the schedule? MG: No, I’m looking forward to playing every team. Every team is great in this

league, this is the highest you can go in this sport. So, I look forward to playing everyone because everyone is great. Q: With a lot of guys crowding the backfield for reps, how does that add to the competition and help you guys get better? MG: You got to just come out here and compete every day. Any running back can step in and make something happen, so it keeps you on your toes a lot. You just got to come out here focused every day and try to make the best of each rep you get.

Q: What’s your favorite thing about being here in San Diego? KM: Oh man, I come from a small town in North Dakota so the weather is up there and the beaches don’t hurt either.

Q: What are some things that fans are interested to know about the club? CR: The Charger Backers were formed in 1961, so we are the original fan club and the only official fan club of the Chargers. We support the Chargers as die-hard fans and support the San Diego community by fundraising efforts for local charities. Our members often have the opportunity to work

with players in giving back to the community through such programs as Payless/Charger Back to School Shoes. Plus, we have fun doing it! Q: What types of events or promotions are you all working on to get more fan involvement? CR: We are giving away a chance to win two tickets to each pregame for any new and renewing members who sign up before regular season starts, and every month during regular season we hold a random drawing from all our members, even those out of the area, for an autographed Charger football. With our website (Chargerbackers.com), Facebook and Twitter, we put out short-notice volunteer opportunities and gameday watch locations. Q: What is a fun thing the club has done together? CR: For decades, we held the Charger Backers Golf Tournament and a few years ago we raised $24,000 for charity. We got to present the check on the 50-yard line at one of the games.

Q: With the addition of Matt Slauson from Chicago, how does he impact the offensive line and what you guys want to do this year? DF: Slauson came in with an old school mentality, (he’s an) old school center. That’s what we need though. We need some guys that are like that and bring

some physicality to the team and compete. He’s done a great job. Q: With some newcomers on the team, where in San Diego would you recommend the guys to go for postgame meals? DF: Man, I tell people to go to Dirty Birds, it’s highly recommended. Best wings I ever had. Q: For yourself, where are your go-to spots when you get in town and have a chance to grab something to eat? DF: Dirty Birds is a great spot, but I’m more of a pho guy. Catching Up With Retired San Diego Charger Center NICK HARDWICK

• 4 oz lemonade • 1 cherry

BLUE ENVY MARTINI: ith the sun shining down at the Chargers first day of minicamp at Chargers Park, a familiar face was watching from the sidelines as season ticket holders got a sneak peek of the team. Nick Hardwick, 11-year veteran and Pro Bowl selection, decided to see how the team was doing while catching up with old friends.

W

“I’m really looking forward to everybody (the Chargers) brought in,” Hardwick said about who he’s excited to see play this season. “I think what (Tom) Telesco and the management staff has done is bring in a bunch of strong character guys with strong leadership qualities, who can play football and make a big impact not only physically, but culturally.” When asked about newcomer Matthew Slauson, Hardwick was quick to give his stamp of approval for the free agent acquisition and touched on what the veteran center can bring to the team. “Bringing his leadership and knowledge and that veteran experience to this offensive line is really going to pay

dividends,” Hardwick said. “(Based on) all accounts from guys he’s played with in Chicago, (they) were telling me how fantastic of a mentor he is, what kind of guy he is, and the toughness that he brings. You have one guy on the offensive line that can bring that in, and he can change the entire mentality of the offensive line in one move.”

• 1 1/2 oz silver tequila

When asked about what made Hardwick stick around in San Diego, he had no problem putting the spotlight on the city of San Diego. “Everything is great about San Diego,” Hardwick said. “The food is great, the fitness is great, the lifestyle—being able to be December (or) January walking around in shorts and a T-shirt—and just being active. It’s a really active city and for me it’s everything I could ask for.”

CHARGER CRUSH:

The former Charger dished out the scoop on his go-to spot for great food in San Diego. “If I were to tell anybody to go to one restaurant, they’re coming to visit from out of town, one spot, C Level,” Hardwick said. “It’s essential San Diego.”

KEENAN ALLEN POSITION: WIDE RECEIVER | YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: 4

Q: Tell us about the excitement of having a new contract before the season starts during minicamp. Keenan Allen: I walked into the facility smiling. I’m excited and feel a little bit of pressure not to drop everything after I just signed. Everything was good and I feel good. Q: When the contract announcement came out in June, you mentioned that you had “unfinished business,” so what are your expectations this year? KA: I just want to come out and get back to where I left off.

Q: After your injury do you have any extra precautions that you take before you head onto the field? KA: Not at all, I’m just trying to get back to where I left off and just go out there and kill it. Q: What does it mean for you and your family being a third round pick to now being able to sign a deal like this? KA: It shows that hard work pays off, I just fought hard for what I could get and now we’re here, hopefully I can do it again.

Q: How’s Keenan (Allen) coming off of the season with his injury last year? MM: (He’s coming back) really quick, he’s coming off the ball, he’s lighter. He’s worked extremely hard, give him a lot of credit. That was a tough injury last year early on and just what he went through and how hard he’s worked, he hasn’t skipped a beat. He’s been chomping at the bit.

Q: How excited do you get when you come out here with the fans and it’s starting to feel like football season? MM: (It feels like) one day closer. It’s great to have our seasonticket holders out here. It adds a little bit of energy and excitement. I couldn’t be happier with the energy and excitement of the players. It’s been different, it’s a different mindset, it’s a new year. Q: What are you and the fans equally excited about? MM: The development of some younger players, having someone like Philip Rivers run the offense, bringing some speed in with Travis Benjamin, seeing Danny Woodhead run around out there and Melvin looks great after the rehab he’s gone through this offseason.

“The energy and excitement that the team is playing with right now; I’m very pleased with the attitude of our football team.” —MIKE MCCOY

O

ver the past few years, kombucha, a lightly fermented sweet black or green tea, has become popular due to its health benefits. However, most don’t see it as a social drink. That is all about to change thanks to Boochcraft, which has found a way to increase the alcohol content, creating an original and exciting new beverage. Hand crafted and brewed using only the finest quality ingredients, Boochcraft offers an alternative for those seeking an active, healthy lifestyle but still enjoy having a few drinks with friends. Drinking with health benefits? Not as farfetched as you may have previously thought. With healthy probiotics, vitamins and minerals that promote stronger immune and digestive systems, you can enjoy a night out (or in) without feeling guilty. We spoke with Adam Hiner, one of the founders, to find out more about the idea behind the business.

BOOCHCRAFT 684 Anita St Chula Vista, CA 91911 619.738.1008 www.boochcraft.com

Q: What is the inspiration behind your business? Adam Hiner: All three founders of Boochcraft are passionate about food and are into organic food and wellness. We were all avid kombucha drinkers and loved the idea behind it and its health benefits. When we found out we could increase its alcohol content and make it more of a social drink, we were pretty psyched and that served as the inspiration behind Boochcraft.

Q: How did you get started? AH: I owned a restaurant called Local Habit and one of the owners owned several hydroponic stores. I had the idea to start a kombucha brewery and Todd and Andrew, my partners, were both excited about the prospect of opening a brewery. Andrew was especially excited since it allowed him to get out of the corporate world and into one of his passions. Q: What was the hardest part of starting your own business? AH: I started multiple businesses so I was pretty well equipped to start Boochcraft, but what I didn’t expect was the amount of time it would take to get all the permits. It took two years to get through the permitting process and all the red tape, but luckily we stuck it out. Q: Do you have any advice for people who want to start their own brewery? AH: Figure out distribution and be prepared for how long it will take to get things going. Also plan for expansion. When the space for Boochcraft was built, sections were left empty which now makes expansion that much easier for us. We were told this early on and took the advice to heart. It was definitely good advice. Q: We all have our moments of doubt. Was there a particular moment where you

realized this was the right decision and is what you were meant to be doing? AH: When we started talking about adding alcohol to kombucha we felt we were on to something big. When we met with Stone, who now handles all our SoCal distribution, and they picked us up, we knew we were on to something big. That’s when it really hit. Q: What is the best part about owning your own business? AH: I get to do what I’m passionate about and what I love. When you get to work towards something you believe in it doesn’t feel like work. Q: Where do you envision your business in the future? AH: We are looking into San Francisco and recently found a distributor, so we will be expanding into the Bay Area. Eventually we would like to have full distribution throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, then up through Portland, Seattle, the Southwest and Midwest and then we’ll take it from there. Q: What is your favorite thing to do in your free time? AH: One of my passions is teaching partner acrobatics and partner yoga techniques like handstands, acrobatics and other circus arts. That’s my favorite thing to do outside of work.

s the most important meal of the day, the value of a good breakfast can’t be understated. Breakfast Republic understands this and gives the important meal the time and attention it deserves. While some restaurants relegate breakfast to a small corner of the menu, Breakfast Republic focuses on the meal exclusively. American classics are given a twist, seen through items such as the churro pancakes and duck breast omelets. Even the establishment differentiates itself from the crowd by utilizing modern design featured in high-end restaurants, but with a relaxed and casual atmosphere. We spoke with founder and owner Johan Engman about the inspiration behind Breakfast Republic and where he sees the restaurant in the future.

BREAKFAST REPUBLIC 2730 University Ave San Diego, CA 92104 619.642.0299 www.breakfastrepublicca.com

Q: What is the inspiration behind Breakfast Republic? Johan Engman: Breakfast Republic captures what I consider a fun and whimsical environment. I’ve taken inspiration from a number of restaurants that I’ve visited all over the world; both design wise and with regard to conceptualizing the menu. I learned a lot by opening and operating Fig Tree Cafe and with each new location I opened, I more and more realized that less is more, i.e. I wanted to launch a new breakfast brand that did one thing and one thing only and that was to serve breakfast. No lunch, no dinner, breakfast only. Q: How did you get started? JE: I started by identifying what I thought to be the perfect location for a cool breakfast spot and that was North Park. Finding the perfect spot took a while, which gave me time to continue working on the concept such as the design, menu and specific things to make the restaurant stand out such as the coffee cup and beer pint designs, the bathroom mirrors, the living wall + quote, etc). Q: What was the hardest part of starting your own business? JE: There are many challenges with starting one’s own business, the biggest one at least in the beginning is funding. Not only is it hard to save up enough money to open a restaurant but going over budget has sort of become par for the course. Aside from that I would say maintaining the balance between staff; front of the house and back of the house, to ensure that the work environment promotes a fun work place but at the same time has policies and guidelines that are followed to a fine line. Q: Do you have any advice for people who want to start their own restaurant? JE: 1) Whatever your initial budget is, add at least 35 percent, if not more, to it. 2) Expect things to go wrong the first few days, have extra people on hand to help with credit card terminals not working, printers not printing, servers making mistakes etc. Try taking the pressure off by adding some humor, thank guests for being one of the first to come in and buy them a drink or two. 3) Remember to thank your staff— as an owner it can be easy to get wrapped up in juggling 500 things, but at the end of the day it’s your staff that is your representation to the customers. As much as you may have going on as an owner take a moment to thank the staff for their hard work. Q: We all have our moments of doubt. Was there a particular moment where you realized this

was the right decision and is what you were meant to be doing? JE: When I opened my first restaurant in 2008 there were many moments of doubt and times when people told me I should just shut down because the restaurant (Fig tree PB) was losing money and I had to work two extra jobs to keep the doors open. I think it was a healthy mix of stubbornness and persistence that just made me keep at it. I don’t think there was a particular moment, it was more about thinking back at all the moments when I used to work in a cubicle and realizing that I don’t want that; I was willing to do whatever it took to make my own business a success, hence working two extra jobs in addition to owning and operating Fig Tree. Q: What is the best part about owning your own business? JE: To be able to set up work environments for other people where they feel rewarded, appreciated and know they have a voice within the company. To run a company where staff know they can grow with the company. Rewarding great work with promotions is an amazing feeling. Q: Where do you envision your businesses in the future? JE: I envision Rise & Shine Restaurant Group to do $150M in annual sales in five years. Q: What is your favorite thing to do in your free time? JE: Travel. I love love love to travel. Much of my restaurant inspiration comes from other countries and cultures. Q: What drew you towards opening restaurants that focused on breakfast? JE: It seems that lots and lots of attention and money have been dedicated to dinner restaurants but most breakfast restaurants all seem so be very “diner-like” for the most part. I wanted to give breakfast restaurants the proper attention in all aspects: design, top notch service, and ingredients equals food quality.

ashion is ever changing and staying on top of trends can seem like an endless task. In an industry where what is in style today can be out of style in a month, one thing remains constant, the timelessness of high-end pieces. You get what you pay for often rings true and Chanel serves as the perfect example. One piece can last your whole life and owner Christina Samolyov knows this. That’s why she decided to deal exclusively with the timeless luxury Chanel provides, even offering rare, hard to find pieces you couldn’t find anywhere else. From shoes to bags, you can find it all and get that straight from the catwalk look in no time.

DESIGNER VAULT 2734 Loker Ave W, Ste H Carlsbad, CA 92010 858.223.0830 www.designer-vault.com

Q: What is the inspiration behind Designer Vault? Christina Samolyov: The inspiration behind Designer Vault came to fruition when I fused my love for fashion, deep entrepreneurial roots and resourcefulness together. As much as I love the handbag business, I love the business side just as much.

Q: How did you get started? CS: I was working a retail job when I realized I hated what I was doing. I came home one day to see a pair of my husband’s Prada boots in the trash. I couldn’t believe he would throw those away. Growing up, my family could never afford designer goods and even going to J.Crew was a treat I only indulged in once as an adolescence so needless to say, when I saw the shoes there it was with a pit in my stomach. I removed the shoes and sold them on eBay. From there I moved into consignment eventually helping other people buy and sell their clothing, shoes and handbags. Q: What was the hardest part of starting your own luxury fashion store? CS: The hardest part is that many people think this is just a hobby and that the product sells itself because it’s Chanel. The truth is there is an immense amount of blood, sweat and tears that go on behind the scenes that no one ever sees and many times customers take that for granted. Q: Do you have any advice for people who want to start their own business? CS: Never start your own business because you want to make a lot of money. Inevitably, you will lose a lot of money before you ever make a lot. Q: Was there a particular moment where you realized this was the right decision and is what you were meant to be doing? CS: I think there have been moments throughout my career that made me take a step back and say, “Wow, this is where I’m suppose to be.” Like the time I was resourceful enough to get on Miley Cyrus’s radar and then outfit her entire Bangerz tour or when I have a client consign thousands and thousands with me I know I must be doing something right.

Q: What is the best part about owning your own business? CS: The best part of owning my own business is knowing that I built something from nothing. A lot of people think you need to have an ivy league education, or be a “good” student in order to be “smart enough” to have your own business but, the truth is you just need two things: will and determination. I had both and I was able to take myself from 0 to 60 mph in just five short years. Knowing that I could do that is the best part of having this business. Q: Where do you envision Designer Vault in the future? CS: I believe Designer Vault will continue to grow as the market grows. We are also looking to consistently carry an assortment of classic bags, so that can be seen on the horizon. Q: What is your favorite thing to do in your free time? CS: Read, I absolutely love to read. I’m constantly learning and love being challenged. I’m currently reading “Desire Map” by Danielle LaPort. Q: If someone is looking to update their wardrobe but is new to high fashion items, what would you suggest looking for first? CS: I would suggest doing quite a bit of research first. You need to find the style that fits you and your lifestyle best. Are you constantly buzzing between meetings or are you an aspiring blogger on a budget? If you’re constantly buzzing between meetings you’ll want a durable handbag that will stand the test of time but will also be large enough to hold a laptop. In which case, a Chanel Grand Shopper Tote in Caviar leather is a great choice or a Prada Saffiano Tote is also optimal. On the other hand, if you’re an aspiring blogger you may opt for the Chloe Drew bag as it holds the essentials, is fashion’s “it” bag and is much more affordable than a tote.

f the hot weather didn’t make it clear by now, the warmer months are here and what’s a better way to beat the heat more than a trip to the Caribbean? If only it were that easy, right? Well, for the foodies out there, or those who yearn for a taste of paradise, you are in luck. Miss B’s Coconut Club has made it to San Diego’s sunny shores and has brought a slice of the Caribbean with it. From its breezy outdoor setting to the laid back atmosphere (not to mention its Mission Beach setting is a paradise in itself) you’ll feel as if you were on vacation, even if only for a few hours. We spoke with owner Pete Cich to find out more about the inspiration behind Miss B’s.

MISS B’S COCONUT CLUB 3704 Mission Blvd San Diego, CA 92109 858.381.0855 www.missbcoconutclub.com

Q: What is the inspiration behind your business? Pete Cich: The inspiration came from the Mission Beach community and its place in San Diego history. We hoped to contribute to that proud history with a unique neighborhood Mission Beach location, which we thought was a hidden gem. Once we learned of the fictitious character “Miss B” it was over. The name “Miss B’s” derives from the real estate boom in Mission Beach in the 1920s. At that time the folks that settled in Mission Beach lived in large tent cities. “Miss B” was a fictitious character used to lure and draw attention to the sale of property in the Area. The tale of “Miss B’s” is actually one of allegory, and her namesake is short for Mission Beach. As former residents of Mission Beach, and knowing its surroundings, the vacation theme is inherent. Coupled with our Chefs Anthony Pedroso and Christina Pancheri’s menu, and Beverage Director Rob McShea’s Caribbean themed tiki program, we developed a theme that says vacation for tourists and staycation for our locals. Q: How did you get started? PC: We took our ideas, put them into a business plan and started plugging away until one day we were actually open. Still feels surreal. This project started with the location first. We obtained the business, and developed a concept around the research we performed about the area. We then developed a solid business plan, and got our hands dirty. Q: What was the hardest part of starting your own business? PC: Planning for the unexpected. The unknown is indescribable and impossible to prepare for. Entrepreneurship isn’t a job. It becomes a lifestyle. We chose to be in this role because we’re risktakers, we’re passionate, we work hard and we believe in our idea. Q: Do you have any advice for people who want to start their own business? PC: Less is more. Keep it simple. Well, to follow up with the last question, the above-mentioned four qualities are more than enough to conquer any obstacle that gets in your way, including the unknown ones. I’d say put those fears to rest and believe in yourself! Also, at the end of the day, less is always more - never over complicate! Q: What is the best part about owning your own business? PC: Working with our team and making something out of nothing. The best part of owning your own business are the ideas of development and adaptation that carry throughout.

Developing the business and the team is challenging yet rewarding. It’s always necessary to analyze progress with your business and personnel. When you can step back a see that your vision is being executed by group of people that you assembled is what it’s all about. Q: What drew you towards opening a restaurant focusing on Caribbean cuisine? PC: The Caribbean has such amazing street food spread amongst all of its beautifully unique islands. We were inspired by the family flavors and traditions of their food culture. The Caribbean is a region that is extremely rich in culture. Its cuisine is influenced by African, Spanish, French, English, Dutch, and other European cultures, customs, and practices, which makes it truly unique and delicious. On the West Coast, it is something that we do not really get too much of an opportunity to experience. We really wanted a place to get good Caribbean cuisine and hoped our guests would as well. Q: What is your favorite thing to do in your free time? PC: My favorite thing to do is without question hanging out with my little boy Hudson Gregory. He is 18 months old, and it is amazing watching him grow. The bond developed in fatherhood is really special, and is one that words do not do the experience justice.

iving in SoCal, we’re spoiled by a seemingly endless array of stunning beaches and because we can often visit them year round, swimsuit season is every season. Every year new swimsuit fashions come out tempting many to update their swim wardrobe to the latest styles, but when it comes to children’s fashion, options become much scarcer. Bowie James founders Karin, Chandra, Gwen and Gretchen noticed this and took action, designing suits that matched their children’s unique and style conscious personalities while paying homage to their Southern California location. Naturally, others wanted to know where they could get their kids suits of their own and Bowie James was born soon after. Now the young fashionistas among us no longer have to feel left out when it comes to beach fashion.

Q: What is the inspiration behind Bowie James? Gretchen Laboy: Every season is inspired by a new destination—we try to capture the magic of seeing it through a child’s eyes, and let our imaginations run wild in our color palette and prints.

Q: How did you get started? GL: Bowie James was started by four mamas with backgrounds in the surf industry. We are rooted in Southern California beach culture, and felt like unique, quality, well-fitting swimwear options were hard to come by for our daughters, so we decided to make our own. People began stopping us on the beach to see where we bought our kid’s suits, so we knew they were looking for better options for their kids too! Q: What was the hardest part of starting your own beachwear company? GL: We are fortunate to collectively have a lot of experience in all aspects of the business we’re in— infrastructure, marketing, sales and product design— but it can be difficult with limited funds when you’re just starting out—we’ve had to be resourceful! Q: Do you have any advice for people who want to start their own business? GL: Take one step at a time and give yourself some grace during the learning curves. There will be challenges, but there will also be triumphs! Q: We all have our moments of doubt. Was there a particular moment where you realized this was the right decision and is what you were meant to be doing? GL: Yes, when we got into some of our major accounts it was huge for us because we knew our outreach

would be so much larger. It was definitely a moment of triumph seeing our product on Nordstrom’s website! Q: What is the best part about owning your own business? GL: Creative freedom and the ability to use the business as a vehicle for doing things we’re passionate about are definitely some of the best perks. Q: Where do you envision Bowie James in the future? GL: We want to continue growing our retailer relationships, and possibly get into our own local storefront to have a space to connect with our community. We’re also working on improving our environmental footprint by sourcing eco-fabrics and reducing waste. Q: What is your favorite thing to do in your free time? GL: Spending time with friends and family, exploring new places, and giving back to the community. Q: What is the main thing you want people to know about Bowie James? GL: We aren’t just another brand. We want to stand for something and make the world better for our kids. We want to encourage young girls to chase their dreams, and set an example for the next generation by giving back to charities, treating the earth right and being good people.

WAVVES WAVVES’ Bassist Discusses the Highs and Lows of Their Summer Tour WRITTEN BY: LAUREN VILLA

From recording in a San Diego basement to getting thrown out of the VMAs and a Lil Wayne after party, Wavves have come a long way. Their recent work has been produced in a studio and the band co-headlined their Summer is Forever II tour with Best Coast, along with opener Cherry Glazerr. The band’s bassist, Stephen Pope, talks their surf-punk garage rock attitude fans love and the highs and lows of touring. “Our typical crowd at a show is pretty rowdy. It’s pretty awesome,” says Pope. “Pretty much every show, from the first note, people are going crazy and crowd surfing and jumping off the stage. It’s a lot of fun. I get my exercise when we play a show.” While touring can be a major marathon for Stephen and the Wavves crew, there are, of course, the ups that make it all worth it. “The only time I actually feel like I have energy in my life is when I’m on stage because I get to feed off the fans’ energy. So, playing shows is always great,” he says. However, because Stephen builds nerves before a show, his dinners are usually pretty late, or early, on some people’s watches, at roughly 1 a.m. The band’s ultimate collaboration would be with Weird Al. “We actually just did a traveling festival with him in Australia and we got to ring in the new year with him, so it was probably the greatest moment of my life,” says Pope.

KING OF KAABOO

KAABOO DEL MAR Del Mar Fairgrounds 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd Del Mar, CA 92014 855.798.5995 www.kaaboodelmar.com

Anxiously Anticipating KAABOO, SD’s Hottest Music Festival

KAABOO is one of San Diego’s most anticipated music festivals. Like Coachella, Outside Lands and Stagecoach, KAABOO draws in major crowds every year. The Founder of this spectacular spectacle is Bryan Gordon, who created the events strictly with its guests in mind. From strategic seating areas to a lineup that stands apart from the rest, KAABOO is a destination to venture to this September.

“WE ARE VERY ECSTATIC ABOUT HAVING A UNIQUE LINEUP THAT IS DIFFERENT THAN THE 2016 FESTIVAL CIRCUIT.” —BRYAN GORDON

met, our great partnership with the Fairgrounds makes putting on an event of this scale really fun.

CENTER STAGE Q: What does the name KAABOO mean? Bryan Gordon: KAABOO means whatever the hell you want it to mean. It’s an expression of the feeling that wells up inside your gut when you’re just having a purely good relaxed, get-away from it all, genuinely fun time with your friends and family. Q: How did the idea of KAABOO happen? BG: With KAABOO, I had the opportunity to put all of my passions together in one place and satisfy all those interests—music, food, art, and being a gracious host are all very important to me. We set out to create a new type of live event, a concept that catered to a little older, a little more affluent and more discerning audience than the typical event prototype which satisfies a younger crowd (essentially the 17-25 year olds). They do what they do very well but I didn’t think there was anybody addressing this particular niche in the 124 | LOCALE MAGAZINE

market. So I took those matters into my own hands. Q: Why did the Del Mar Fairgrounds feel like the right location? BG: The scenic location and optimal weather in SoCal in September were two driving forces for choosing Del Mar. Also the types of people living in the San Diego and surrounding area are exactly the demographic for KAABOO. They are the people who work hard but play hard too. Then there’s the fact that there’s a gigantic facility with this entire infrastructure at the Fairgrounds that had all these amenities. We noticed, as we went around the country, that a lot of festivals had to build their site from scratch. The Del Mar Fairgrounds has seating, bathrooms, outdoor space and absolutely beautiful architecture. It’s got ample parking around it, along with its own shuttle transportation. Aside from having the logistical needs

Q: How do you explain the KAABOO experience? BG: The KAABOO experience can be described as discovery. Our hope is that individuals discover things that they didn’t know before and that could be in music, in food and wine and craft spirits/beer, in comedy, or in a different brand or service that they maybe might have not known about. We hope our guests walk away from KAABOO thinking their life is better than it was prior to coming. Mostly, we want them to walk away totally recharged and feeling that they were at the beginning of something special. Q: What makes KAABOO different from other festivals? BG: Just about everything at KAABOO is going to be different from what exists elsewhere. The most significant thing is that the entire event is purposely built with this specific target audience in mind. The DNA of this event has been imagined from day one, targeting the guest. That is the most important thing and you will feel it everywhere in every way. Specifically, with respect

to the food and the beverage options, I think that there will be greater variety and quality than is available at many other events of this nature. There will be places to sit and actually enjoy tasting everything, instead of sitting on the ground. KAABOO is curated to present an extraordinary degree of quality, variety and not the everyday stuff that everybody will have been exposed to before, and therefore we are presenting a cabinet of curiosity to people. Q: Who are the main/most anticipated acts performing at each stage? BG: KAABOO’s most anticipated acts include Aerosmith and Jack Johnson, as this will be both of their only US shows this year and Fall Out Boy who is closing their tour at KAABOO. Also, we will bring to the stage Jimmy Buffett who will be returning to Southern California for the first time in four years and Daryl Hall and John Oates who are coming off of their first ever sell out at Madison Square Garden. We are very ecstatic about having a unique lineup that is different than the 2016 festival circuit, so we are very excited for all of the bands and the diversity that this lineup brings for our guests.

JAIME DERRINGER Founder of Design-Milk.com

A Way With Words: She’s not only a designer and artist, but a poet as well!

When Jaime Derringer got the idea to start Design Milk, it was just her. She first had to learn how to design and hand code her own website, working weeknights and weekends, then manage her own advertising and marketing, design the mag and write her own copy. Today, the online publication is your go-to for what’s new in art, architecture, interior design, furniture and decor.

“I describe my work as an unplanned exploration of shape and color using layers like Japanese calligraphy, electronic music, space exploration, sci-fi and fireworks as my guides.” —Jaime Derringer

It was exactly a decade ago that Jaime Derringer, who describes herself as someone who never set out with a plan, started to get the creative itch and began doodling in a sketchbook, unleashing her creative juices for bigger and better artistic expressions. That same year, Derringer decided to launch her own online publication, Design Milk, an idea which evolved quite organically from her personal search to find a good sofa. Since then, the publication that was originally started—just for fun—has earned the respect of a large subscriber base of design professionals in all design industry disciplines and is now a valued resource for home furnishings, architecture, interiors, style+fashion and modern art. We asked Derringer to share some of the highlights of her 10 year journey, which began with a simple blog. 132 | LOCALE MAGAZINE

ARIS FORD Founder & Executive Creative Director of Freeman’s Collective

Current Project: Road Trip Guide for Redwood National Park

Most of us are familiar with the term “wanderlust”; that strong desire we have inside us to travel. Some have it, some don’t. One man, Aris Ford of Orange County, is so full of wanderlust that he created a company centered around it: Freeman’s Collective. It’s part guide, part lookbook, all feeding into the creative community.

“It is pivotal to our belief that no matter who you are, where you are in life, what your physical condition is, the most important thing you can do to change your life’s course is taking that first step in the right direction.” —ARIS FORD

Q: WHAT IS FREEMAN’S COLLECTIVE (FC)?

ARIS FORD: Freeman’s Collective is a creative commune, meaning we are a group of artists and craftsmen that have come together to create pieces of art that reflect enthusiasm for adventure, travel, our outdoor experiences and the active lifestyles that we live everyday. Q: What is your role at FC and what does that entail? AF: I am the Founder and Executive Creative Director of Freeman’s Co. My job entails sculpting all creative facets of the company from curating our social media channels, copywriting our Road Trip Guides, developing our e-commerce website and user experience, to creating our action sports videos. I help ensure that our brand voice is consistent and brand strategy remains on point. Q: What inspired you to create FC? AF: I was backpacking through Australia in 2011 and started a blog about my travels while diving on the Great Barrier Reef. It ignited my passion for travel, adventure and writing. When I came home, I continued the blog and printed a few t-shirts for myself and the friends that I took camping or hiking with me. Eventually, the business was born from the community that continued to grow and engage with us. Q: Your mantra is “Every Adventure Begins with One First Step. #StepSwiftly.” What does that mean? AF: It means everything to us. It serves as a call to action to our community, a hashtag for our social channels and a value that we all strive for. It’s a play on the proverb, “A journey of 1,000 miles begins with one step” and it’s used as a tool for inspiration. It is pivotal to our belief that no matter who you 136 | LOCALE MAGAZINE

are, where you are in life, what your physical condition is, the most important thing you can do to change your life’s course is taking that first step in the right direction. Q: Where is your all-time favorite place to visit and why? AF: Big Sur. No question. There’s really nothing like it. It’s full of micro-ecosystems, meaning when you go backpacking, you can start in the mountains under California coastal redwood forests, climb onto arid ridges of sage brush, drop into valleys with streams and oak, then end where waterfalls break onto pristine beaches. It’s really got it all and why it inspired our first collection, the Big Sur Collection. Q: What kinds of products do you create and sell? AF: We sell leather goods, clothing and accessories. Our best sellers vary greatly from Big Sur Blankets and Beanies to premium 5-panel hats and Hawaiian Snapbacks. Clothing is always a popular item for us and the new leather goods sell just as well. Q: Which product, in your opinion, is the number one thing every traveler needs? AF: The Big Sur Blankets are a surprising pick for me because until I actually took one on a camping trip, I never realized their versatility. [They’re] great for warmth, obviously

since they are blankets, but also great for shade or throwing on the ground when I need to lay gear down. I recently got a backpacking hammock and now I don’t go anywhere without both of those packed. We recently launched a spectrum of colors for them too, so there are lots of options if you are interested in getting one for your next adventure. Q: Where is one place you have not yet been, but are dying to go? AF: The Mighty 5. I’ve yet to visit any of the national parks in Utah and I’m dying to get out and hike, climb, and camp them. My partner Spencer actually lived in Moab for a while, climbing and working at a hostel. He’s got tons of stories and it makes me want to visit as soon as I can. Q: What was the craziest, weirdest travel experience you’ve had? AF: Backpacking solo in Australia was by far the craziest experience. I had the chance to dive the Great Barrier Reef on a live-aboard, but made a stop in Cairns to visit Gilligan’s. It’s a hostel everyone kept telling me to stay at if I wanted to have fun. They were right. I bunked with ten other international travelers. I had the time of my life floating in a pool with a floating keg, swim up bar, and a D.J. under a giant tree. That’s all before I got on a boat and spent the next week diving one of the seven wonders of the natural world. I’d finish diving for the day, go to sleep, and wake up on a different portion of the reef the next morning. When done for the day, we’d have beer on the roof deck and sing songs under the stars. It was a hell of a trip and I highly recommend it to anyone going down under. Q: What is your vision for FC? AF: Our one-year plan is to get into local stores and online retail. There’s a big push for content in the next 12 months and it’s

where we really want to grow. Video will play a big role in our communication as well as social media and we hope to really grow these channels this year. In the next 5-10 years the sky's the limit. I’m willing to take it as far as we can go. Q: You meet someone who’s never traveled: what reasoning would you give them for why they should? AF: I think everyone should travel because it opens your eyes to culture and other views of life. It’s an immense opportunity for growth and a wonderful way to learn from experience. It sounds cliché, but you really find yourself when you push yourself outside of your comfort zone. Travel will do all of that. Plus you’ll get to meet amazing new friends and explore far off places. Q: What are three things you’ve learned traveling? AF: 1.) Things don’t always go as planned. Roll with it. 2.) If you’re too tired to do more, do it anyway. You’ll regret not going the extra mile. 3.) There’s nothing like the freedom of the open road. Q: Is it true what they say, that the West coast is the best coast? AF: Yep. There’s nothing like the Wild West coast.

t’s 1915, and on a quiet stretch of sand, a man named Howard Baker stood with architect William Hebbard on two of the five parcels he owned along Ocean Boulevard in Coronado. They were there to plan the development of the two parcels into a large estate where he would live with his family. He knew he needed room for entertaining, and wanted to enjoy the great weather and view that the land offered. The property would be built about five feet above the street level, to maximize privacy and the view of the surf and sand. The estate was named “Las Olas” by Baker, a tribute to its beachfront location and the stunning views that stretch as far south as Mexico and north toward Point Loma. Baker would go on to build and live in the home until Walter Fitch, a mining tycoon, purchased it in 1929. Mr. and Mrs. Fitch and their four children lived in the home,

hosting beautiful social events at the property. Mr. Fitch retired when he was in his early 30s and the family enjoyed everything that Coronado has to offer, including Hotel Del Coronado; which was built about the time that they purchased the estate. A black and white photo suddenly comes to life in Technicolor on this bright, warm, Southern California day. Today, Hebbard is thought of as a renowned local architect and the Tudor-style home with its brick and shingled facade is thought of as a local landmark. Now the home is waiting for its next chapter; its next owner to take the story a little further. The beautiful, historic design of this 101-year-old estate is something to be treasured and enjoyed, but also can be easily brought into current standards of technology, flow, and function if the new owner prefers. The estate still sits on two parcels along

Ocean Boulevard, and offers much more frontage than the typical Ocean Boulevard lot. With almost 25,000 square feet of land and a home with over 6,000 square feet of living space, there is room to get the whole family together and enjoy the sun-soaked city. The property features eight bedrooms, five and a half baths, and lots of outdoor entertaining space and patios. Outside you’ll find a four car garage and a guest quarters with its own living space, kitchen and bedroom. The adjacent second parcel is the perfect place to expand the outdoor living of the estate— the new owner can let their imagination run wild, designing the perfect pool, cabana area or outdoor kitchen to help pass long summer days. Christine Baker and Zachary Todaro are the listing agents on the property. Zachary is a fourth generation resident of Coronado and remembers
