Spring 2016

Dear Readers Most children are naturally happy and bubbly little people. I think the rest of us could learn a lot just by observing them. Just think of the happiness expressed by the last toddler you saw. I hope happiness remains the focal point in your life, and how the simple things in life will ensure that we are truly happy. I think it’s very simple, and it’s always right in front of us. We just need to open our eyes, simplify our lives, and do the things that will make us happy. Spending time on things which are important to me, while being surrounded by a loving and supportive community of family and friends, continually make me happy. This edition of the Family Grapevine (Crawley & Horsham) has some great articles. Mary Lou has written about the Hidden Danger in our children’s lives - her article “Power Games: Parents, Kids and The Internet” is on page 9. You will also find an exam guide for parents which is on page 17. There are two great family competitions to enter - Elderflower Fields (a Family Festival) and a London break for a family of four. These competitions and our What’s On Guide are espcially relevant after recent research was conducted by Southeastern Railway (see page 21). Carole Kinnear

Did you kn o Crawley WORDfest 2016 dates set!

The organisers of Crawley’s annual literary festival have set the dates for the 2016 event: Tuesday 12th to 23rd April. The event will kick off with a comedy evening on Tuesday 12th April, followed by a range of exciting author talks, creative workshops, spoken word performances, recitals and more – mostly for free – before concluding on Saturday 23rd April 2016 on World Book Night, an international celebration of reading. Now in its sixth year, Crawley WORDfest is a voluntary festival organisation that aims to build closer community links among Crawley residents who share a love of reading, writing, music and art. Highlights for 2016 include: Crime Fiction Fans - Killer Women - Agatha Christie’s legacy, in fact and fiction. This event (Tues 19 April) welcomes three top crime writers and a former Met-detective-turned-TV-script-consultant (for Prime Suspect, The Bill and more) to discuss the huge influence Agatha Christie has had on the genre as well as what makes good crime writing. Aspiring Writers - WORDfest regular New Faces of Fiction (Fri 22 April) introduces two new writers as they prepare to unveil their first novels to the world; Rebecca Thornton and TBC. Discover how they successfully negotiated the turbulent world of publishing to make it. Families - Now in its second year, Get Stuck in Day (Sat 16 April) invites families to let their kids loose in the library for a fun-packed day of craft activities, workshops, games and children’s theatre – all for free. Lovers of Literature - Desert Island Books (Thur 14 Apr) WORDfest invites three successful authors to come and share the books that they simply could not live without in a castaway situation Julia Crouch, Brighton-based novelist and WORDfest Patron, said: “With adventurous programming, ranging from theatre to literary events to active opportunities to create and tell stories, WORDfest provides a creative focus for the Crawley community, reaching out to all ages and reinforcing the importance of stories in our 21st century lives. Grassroots literary festivals are more than just the books and the authors, they are about celebrating reading and the community. Stories are a large part of what makes us human, and events like WORDfest give us the perfect opportunity to get together and discuss them.” About WORDfest - WORDfest is a voluntary festival organisation that aims to build closer community links among Crawley residents who share a love of reading, writing, music and art. Help the Heroes Triathlon at Copthorne Prep School

Following the visit by Ofsted Inspectors at the end of December 2015, the school was found to have an overall effectiveness of Good with a further rating of Good for five key categories; from Effectiveness of Leadership to Quality of Teaching, Learning and Assessment. The results are cause for celebration, highlighting the dedication to an ambitious two-year improvement plan, which has seen staff and pupils willing to take on the challenge and work hard to progress. Feedback from Inspectors suggested the school is a secure Good, with only a few steps remaining before Outstanding, which will continue to be the ultimate goal.

Helen Williamson, Headteacher, comments: “This report is a significant step in realising the

Billingshurst Primary School Celebrates Latest OFSTED Result

Helen Williamson, Headteacher at Billingshurst Primary School, delighted staff and pupils by announcing the result this week. The rating represents a significant achievement as the school moves from Inadequate to Good in only twenty months.

vision we hold for our school. When Ofsted judged the school to be Inadequate in 2013, I made the commitment to our school community that we would achieve a judgement of Good and that anything less would not be acceptable. I am delighted that the incredible hard work and dedication of staff and pupils has been acknowledged by Ofsted, which will drive us on to further improvement. Over the last twenty months we have been committed to ensuring the measures that were needed to improve the school were implemented in a sustainable and long-term plan. At times it has proved challenging, but the children remain at the heart of our vision and decision-making. We continue to be extremely proud of them. It must also be said that this extraordinary achievement would not be possible without the dedication and sheer hard work of each and every member of staff at the school; the whole team at BPS has shared my commitment to making this school great and I am so proud of this incredible team. Next inspection: Outstanding!”

All go at Tilgate Park Spring is in the air, the bees are buzzing and it’s all go for the Tilgate Nature Centre staff! Our new Australasian zone, due to open Saturday 2nd April, is well under way. Visitors will have noticed lots of outbuildings, aviaries and paddocks cropping up at far end of the Nature Centre over the past few months.

This area will be feature some of the amazing animals and plants that can be found in Australia, New Zealand and New Guinea. Sure to be popular are the red-necked and parma wallabies, these small relatives of the kangaroos are well known for their jumping ability. Like koalas, wombats and Tasmanian devils they are marsupials and give birth to a baked bean sized baby, called a joey, which they carry in their pouch for nearly a year. When you visit see if you can spot a head poking out of a pouch. Several species of bird will be on show, including the incredibly colourful rainbow lorikeets, noisy kookaburras and galahs, a species of pink cockatoo! By far biggest birds will be the emus, these pre-historic looking flightless birds can reach almost 2m tall. They lay lovely green eggs and unlike most birds it is the male who sits and rears the chicks, all by himself. As well as these exciting new friends, we have a few other animal surprises…but you’ll have to wait until the opening to find out what they are! Signage on Australia’s most dangerous, weirdest and most wonderful animals will be displayed throughout the new zone, and wooden sculptures

Power Games:

Parents, Kids & The Internet by Mary Lou Burge

There’s no getting away from it, smart phones and tablets have become an integral part of our children’s lives. I’m so envious of my boys and the wealth of information they have available to them at the touch of a button, particularly when I recall spending many long hours trawling though books in the school library. This generation is hugely lucky to be able to access all the opportunities the internet provides and to be able to find out whatever, whenever, they wish. But this has probably all happened a little too quickly for some of us parents to have kept up with the security aspects of it all. In a lot of homes, the kids are way more ‘tech-savvy’ than the parents – I know I struggle to keep up! A complete ban on the use of mobiles is not really practical, particularly for children of senior school age, as they are now encouraged to use their personal devices as a learning tool within the classroom and for homework. In my family, mobiles have actually become an essential way of keeping track of each other, Friend Finder proving to be a fantastic app when organising complicated pick-ups! But with younger and younger children now being exposed to anything and anybody they happen to come across whilst surfing the net, it’s vitally important that we show them how to stay safe online. Safer Internet Day in February marked the release of some enlightening new studies into our children’s use of technology. Gone are the days of sitting in front of the TV for hours, watching whatever happened to be on at the time. The youth of today are much more likely to watch whatever they want on demand on YouTube, at the same time as keeping in almost constant contact with their friends on social networks such as Facebook, SnapChat and Instagram. A survey for CBBC Newsround found 96% of 13 to 18 year olds are signed up to social media, with a staggering 78% of under-13s using at least one social media network (Facebook being the favourite) despite being below the age requirement. 13 is the age limit for most social media networks, in line with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998. The networks should be seeking ‘verifiable parental consent’ from young users and restricting how they use the data, but this is obviously not happening. Some, like Facebook, simply bring up refusal messages if a user types in an underage date. Others, like Yahoo, allow a child to set up an account but then refuse them access to some services - such as Flickr’s photo pages. Twitter and Instagram ban under-13s, but never actually ask the user to confirm their birth date. Whatsapp is unusual in setting its age limit at 16 years, but it’s easy enough for a child to lie, and proof of ID is rarely sought. Some child safety campaigners want apps to be forced to adopt more rigorous checks. They could, for example, ask challenging questions to catch out underage users, and only give them one chance to type in a date of birth rather than multiple attempts. Shockingly, 20% of kids surveyed said they had

faced online bullying, rising to 50% for the 1618 year group. But this was also the age group where two in five had used social media to spread gossip and a quarter had used it to say something ‘unkind’ to someone. More than two-thirds of young people knew they could report offensive language to the provider but, in practice, were more likely to just ignore it. Google marked Safer Internet Day by launching an online safety roadshow, which aims to reach 10,000 primary school children this year. But the lead needs to come from us, the parents and carers, in taking back some control. The Safer Internet Centre www.saferinternet.org.uk offers this simple four-point guide: • Have ongoing conversations with your children about staying safe online • Use safety tools on social networks and other online services, eg Facebook privacy settings • Decide if you want to use parental controls on your home internet • Understand devices and the parental control tools they offer

With the wide range of parental control apps and different devices our kids are using it may all seem like a bit of a minefield and difficult to know where to start. So here are some of the key apps that can be used to control what your kids see and do on android devices: MM Guardian allows you to block incoming calls and texts, monitor alarming texts and control which apps can be used and when on your child’s smartphone. In more extreme circumstances it also lets you locate and lock your child’s phone using a text message, as well as set time restrictions to limit their use. You’ll be able to get a daily report on your child’s phone usage, so if their bill is high, you will be able to find out why and it will also allow you to set restrictions on the websites they can access. Funamo allows you to not only monitor devices but also filter internet sites. Contacts, calls, SMS, websites, applications and locations of the device will automatically be logged and history data is uploaded to the Funamo server each day. You’ll then be able to view this data from any browser whenever you want. You can also enforce safe search for Google, Yahoo, Bing and YouTube, as well as set up keyword or phrase filtering - which

www.localfamilymagazine.co.uk

lets you ban specific topics that might be deemed safe by the search engines - and time limits for applications. Kids Place asks you to set up a pin when you first log in that is then needed to exit the app. But once logged in, it will protect your personal data and restrict your children to only use apps approved by you. Kids Place will also make sure your kids can’t do anything on your device that will cost you money, such as making phone calls, texting or downloading new apps. In addition, you can block incoming calls when this app is running and disable all wireless signals, as well as have multiple user profiles. AppLock now has 100 million users and allows you to lock SMS, contacts, Gmail, Facebook and any other app to protect privacy on your phone. You will be able to control photo and video access, meaning you can set selected pictures to disappear from your photo gallery so only you can access them with a code. AppLock also allows you to lock your settings and Google Play so you won’t have to worry about your children accessing new apps or changing your settings. Screen Time is less invasive than others and geared towards families with older children and teenagers. It will let you monitor and manage the time spent on devices and allows you to set time limits on selected apps, as well as a bedtime curfew, lights out and school time curfews. It can be controlled via any browser and the app itself runs in the background, providing you with an easy way to check up on usage. When it comes to iOS/Apple compatible devices you can restrict access to iPhones and iPads in the settings by going to ‘General’ and scrolling down to ‘Restrictions’, where you will find a range of options. However, there is a rather successful ‘new kid on the block’app, available for both Apple and android devices and even endorsed by that successful parental campaigner, Jamie Oliver. OurPact was launched last year after hundreds of hours of research with child professionals, parents and industry experts. Not only does it allow parents to manage their child’s screen time throughout the day, but also teaches children proper device use and responsibility. By actually entering into a pact with your children, you can agree and enforce bedtime, set dinnertime, manage study time and schedule family time throughout the day. It also offers recommendations of the best screen time limits and schedules for your child’s age. But despite all the tools out there to help us keep our children internet safe, the key point in all of this is to educate them that their online life needs to mirror what they do in real life; not to be mean to people just because you can’t see them, and not to link to strangers or follow them to strange places, even if they seem to be just harmless websites. This, in combination with your parental control, will give them the world at their feet!

How to support your children during exam time Whilst you know your child better than anyone else, there are a few basic guidelines we can all bear in mind as parents when exam time creeps up.

Express interest and concern early on

Start the conversation with your child, demonstrate your compassion and your understanding as early in the exam process as possible so they know you’re there for support if needed. Your child really wants your help, but you have to be gentle in offering it. Use your understanding. Things have changed so much; you really don’t know what it is like to be a child facing exams today. But what you do know what it is like to be a person under pressure, facing anxiety and stress. Use that understanding to reach your child, help them to understand their emotional reactions are normal, but can be controlled. Remember, anxiety and stress are about the future what is important in this season is what needs to be done now. Make a point of establishing this: break everything up into stuff that is needed now, and what is needed later. Not only will this reduce anxiety and stress, but if you take care of what has to be done now, the future will take of itself. Remember, they are not your exams! Your child’s job is to study for the exams, and then to write them: your job is to help. You can’t make them study and you can’t make them write exams on your behalf. The most effective way to help is to provide a supportive and understanding environment for the child - the demands on you will be different during the exam

season, so you will need to be sensitive. Remember, engage your child early - start the dialogue, don’t wait for a problem to emerge.

Defuse conflict

You want your child to be studying right now, they are avoiding or refusing - the classic conflict. Do not engage, defuse. Change the subject, gently without being patronising, and start a conversation about something completely different, a favourite celebrity, a sport. Be patient, be genuine. A few minutes talking about something completely different and your child will know you are on their side: the conflict is defused, and the child is likely to be more relaxed, and more open to going to do what they really know they should be doing.

Remember – there is life outside exams!

This may be the hardest of all. Encourage and support your child, help them to the performance they are capable of: but try to find a balance, acknowledging that life exists outside exams. Be sensitive, do not downplay the exams, but allow household life to go on. The best way to start this is with yourself: acknowledge within yourself that your child’s health and happiness, and that of others in the household, must continue even when exams loom. Stress is natural, it is fine, but it becomes too large. Help give perspective by demonstrating that exams are not the entire world, and that all that is required

www.localfamilymagazine.co.uk

of your child is they do their best in this moment: if they do that, the future will take care of itself. It is in establishing themselves in this moment that the child will get the stress emotion under control.

Understand and train the mind

Studying, writing exams, dealing with emotions like anxiety and stress - these are all functions of the mind. Take some time to ensure that the mind is in its finest shape for these challenges: as little as ten minutes a day devoted to the mind will make a huge difference. If you don’t have access to a dedicated mindfulness or mind training for school programme, try a daily simple concentration exercise: between the two of you, choose something you and your child can easily visualise - a simple image of a person or place will do - and then sit quietly together for ten minutes, both with your eyes shut, trying to keep your mind focussed only on the image. A fun twist is to count silently the number of times your mind wanders in the ten minutes, and compare. (Ten times in ten minutes actually shows great concentration.) Let’s get Sugar Smart West Sussex is supporting the national campaign encouraging us to be more aware of high sugar foods and looking for lower sugar alternatives, through a competition running across all libraries. On average children are consuming three times more sugar than they should be, with sugary drinks being the biggest source. Ten year old children should have a maximum 6 sugar cubes a day, and it is less if you are younger than this. The Change4Life sugar smart website https:// www.nhs.uk/change4life-beta/campaigns/sugarsmart/home gives loads of great ideas as to how to make healthier swaps and how to download the Sugar Smart app A £50 voucher and a prize for your school is up for grabs for the young person who designs the best sugar reduction logo. They are looking for a creative way of conveying sugar reduction with a logo this would be by spelling it out, using images or both. The logo • Must be presented on an A4 sheet of paper, or as a pdf if done digitally • Must be as effective and clear in black and white as well as colour

• Needs to be clear and identifiable as an email footer sized logo Entries should be emailed to alison.thomson@ westsussex.gov.uk or by post to Alison Thomson, 1st Floor, The Grange County Hall, Chichester PO19 1RQ to arrive by the closing date of 18th March 2016. Please include name, age and school. The sugar reduction programme is just one way that the Council is working across the county to tackle obesity. Almost 20% of children starting school in West Sussex are overweight and by the time they leave primary school it is 1 in 3 children who are overweight. These figures are higher in some parts of West Sussex, including Crawley. Supporting an overweight child to lose weight will improve their self esteem, their school attendance and their health. There are lots of ideas on the Change4Life website on ways to make healthy changes to what you eat and the amount of activity you do. http://www.nhs.uk/Change4Life/ Pages/why-change-for-life.aspx

Research reveals kids prefer family days out to computer games and TV New research from Southeastern Railway amongst children and parents, highlights what kids really think about days out with family, with the vast majority preferring these days out to other activities like playing sport or watching TV. Theme parks top the list of kids’ favourite family days out, while visits to the beach and zoo or safari park complete the top three Museum trips, visiting family members and doing arts and crafts made the top 10. It’s good news for those who worry that the nation’s children are becoming couch potatoes. Of the under 12s that took part in the study, three quarters (74 per cent) say they’d rather spend time with family than play computer games and 87 per cent would choose a day out with family over watching their favourite TV programmes. For 85 per cent of child respondents, family fun takes priority over playing sports and a similar number (85 per cent) said the same about school trips. Barbara Thomas, Passenger Services Manager at Southeastern said: “The enjoyment that children get from spending a day out and about with their family is clear, as they get to see and experience new things, whilst also spending time with loved

ones. We regularly see families travelling to and from their days out and it’s great to see such excitement amongst both kids and their parents. When asked what the best thing was about family days out, 45 per cent of under 12s said it was spending time with their family, while 17 per cent said it was seeing something new. For 16 per cent, it’s all about the sweets and treats that they wouldn’t usually get at home and for 9 per cent, it’s about learning something. When it comes to a child’s ideal day out with friends and family, three is the magic number, with those surveyed saying they would like to take this many friends along with them to their favourite places. And while 39 per cent of under 12s like to know where they are going in advance, the majority (61 per cent) actually said they would prefer a surprise.
