But here at the Family Grapevine we know that family life doesn’t slow down, and with all the news and information in this issue we’ll keep the whole family busy throughout the winter months. This year’s fun-filled pantomime at The Hawth Crawley is Peter Pan starring Emma Barton (Honey in EastEnders), Shaun Williamson (EastEnders and Extras) and children’s favourites Richard David-Caine and Joseph Elliot (CBeebies’ Swashbuckle). Emma Barton visits The Hawth for the third time after wowing audiences in the hit musical Chicago and starring alongside Shaun Williamson in the National Theatre’s hilarious One Man, Two Guvnors. Emma is really looking forward to her 9th panto despite the slightly daunting prospect of flying for the first time(!). Shaun is best known for playing Barry Evans in EastEnders for nine years before appearing in many other TV shows including working with Ricky Gervais on two series of Extras and Life’s Too Short. He is currently starring in the hugely successful tour of the West End hit musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. It’s a first for Shaun as well, he’s never played Captain Hook - ‘a great baddy’ before, even though this is his 16th panto! Richard David-Caine and Joseph Elliot star as the comedy duo Cook and Line in

West Sussex County Council have launched a new membership card for its younger customers featuring the nation’s favourite picture book character - the Gruffalo. Families visiting the library to join are offered the new library card. Joining the library is fee and there are no charges to borrow books. Children are also exempt from the late charges if books become overdue - although with the 24/7 service to renew books online, over the phone or suing the library app, it’s never been easier to keep your books up to date! Bestselling children’s author and creator of the Gruffalo, Julia Donaldson, has given her backing to the new library card: “I am delighted that libraries in West Sussex will feature the Gruffalo on their new membership cards and I hope this will encourage even more children to join their local library.” Earlier this year, the County Council’s Registration Service began offering parents the chance to collect a library card for a new baby during their birth registration appointment. This has proved to be extremely popular and has seen library membership for babies more than double year-on-year since the initiative started. All libraries have a wide range of books for children and young people, right from birth to teenage years. Plus every library offers a free weekly rhyme time for under-fives

Junior parkrun is a fully marshalled, timed 2km run open to all children aged 4-14yrs and is held in parks across the country every Sunday morning at 9am.

Children can walk, run, skip or hop their way around the course with their friends and family for fun or as part of a training plan. The aim is to get children active and have fun by introducing them to a sport without any of the normal outside pressures. It’s a great way to improve health, confidence and to enjoy the great outdoors.

School Admissions

Do Not assume your child will be allocated a school place automatically. You must apply and give your preferences. Parents with children due to start school for the first time do not receive a letter from the County Council so it’s important to make a note of the dates and starting about your preferences now. You need to apply for a school place in the next two months if your child is due to start school for the first time from September 2017. This applies to three and four year olds who were born between 1 September 2012 and 31 August 2013. West Sussex County Council will accept applications from Monday 3 October and the deadline for submitting your preferences is Sunday 15 January 2017. You can find out more about the process - including which school catchment area your home is in - at www.westsussex.gov.uk/admissions. You can access the internet for two hours free-ofcharge at libraries if you do not have this ability at home. It is really important you let the Council know your three preferred schools before the deadline or your chance of getting a place at a school of your choice is greatly reduced.

As director and choreographer Dean shall, using his expertise of the icy stage, be responsible for translating the show’s substantive themes to the most beautiful choreographies. He will orchestrate a creative team of highly acclaimed professionals such as Stephen Emmer (Music Director), Nicolas Vaudelet (Costume Designer) and Bart Doerfler (Artistic Director Holiday on Ice). Beware of the stranger in your home By Mary Lou Burge

I recently attended a school talk given by a Met Police Officer who, as a former pupil of the school, came to speak to Year 9 students about staying safe online. Working in the Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Team, he and his colleagues encounter some pretty horrifying scenarios on a daily basis, which is why he was so keen to educate children and their parents about the dangers to watch out for. It was interesting to note that very few children present actually knew what the age of criminal responsibility was – currently 10 years old. I also don’t think the kids had appreciated the seriousness of actions that could result in them actually being convicted of a crime. Asking a friend to send a photograph of a sensitive body part or sending somebody or downloading a photograph of a sexually explicit nature might seem a bit of a laugh, but could result in serious repercussions if the image goes viral and gets into the hands of the Police. It could even result in teenagers ending up on a sex offenders’ register. The benefits of the internet as a fantastic learning tool are to be heralded and this generation is incredibly lucky to have it as a resource, but with kids now online every day, sharing every aspect of their lives on social media sites, do they know exactly who they are sharing this with and what they should do if they sense something is wrong? Children in the UK have the 2nd highest number of social networking contacts in Europe. From a survey in 2012, in the 8-11 year age group 12% was the percentage of friends children had whom they did not know outside of being online, rising to 29% for 1115 year olds. The number of children being ‘groomed’ in the safety and comfort of their own home is growing. With the desire for popularity and to get as many friends as possible on social media or gaming sites, kids are connecting with strangers that they wouldn’t dream of chatting to outside their home. Over time, they build relationships with these strangers revealing more and more about themselves, and the ‘groomer’ begins to befriend more of their friends so they become accepted as part of their internet network. The ultimate aim is to gain trust

and a familiarity that will make organising a face-to-face meet seem the most natural next step. One of the examples of this given at the talk was the case of the 40 year old hospital porter who featured in Channel 4’s 24 Hours in A&E and became a bit of a celebrity. He befriended a 13 year-old girl on WhatsApp and sent her photographs of his ‘privates’ and asked her to do the same. Luckily her mother, having confiscated her phone for some reason, came across the messages and went to the Police. He was given a prison sentence last year. It is obvious that we still have a long way to go to make sure our kids are internet safe and savvy. There is a danger that as parents we can over react and become paranoid about who our kids are talking to online. But the secret must surely be to just stay ‘switched on’ and keep the channels of communication open. Chat regularly about who they are linked to and what they are up to online. Make sure they know what is inappropriate behaviour and ensure that they tell you or someone else if they come across something that has crossed that line. The Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Command www. ceop.police.uk website, www.thinkuknow.co.uk, is a fantastic online help guide which is broken down into age groups with information geared to each. Do encourage your kids to read it, with or without you. Footgolf is brilliant!

Footgolf is played on a golf-course style layout using an age appropriate size football. The object of the game is to get the ball into the hole using only your feet in the fewest number of shots possible. Footgolf is a very ‘addictive’ sport - it combines the best of football and golf, two of the most popular sports in the world. The beauty of the game lies in you being able to strategically combine power and precision every time you kick the ball and is a sport for all ages. Gatwick Footgolf has always been at the forefront of this developing sport. They were the first to turn an existing golf course into a Footgolf course when the 9-Hole Golf Course was turned into an 18 Hole Footgolf course back in 2012. Such has been the success of Footgolf at Gatwick that the centre is creating the only bespoke 18-Hole Footgolf course in the country. This course, specifically designed for the mechanics of a football and not a golf ball, will see the USGA spec’ course open for play in early Summer 2017 and will complement the existing 18 Hole ‘Burstow’ course. Last summer I took my three sons and their friends to Gatwick Footgolf for the first time ... I was desperate for an hour to read my book with a cup of tea and the boys needed to direct their energies somewhere else other than their electronic items. We found a gem that ticked all boxes! Consequently, we ended up spending a lot of time there especially as Gatwick Footgolf had some great holiday offers which I understand are also extended to half terms. Happy mother and boys all round! Owner Paul and Director of Footgolf, Darren, have worked hard to create a great Footgolf course for everyone! It was great to see grandparents, parents and their children arriving to play as well as football teams to practise their dead-ball skills in a fun environment! One afternoon, there was a corporate team-building event happening followed by wonderful smelling food laid out in the marquee. Everyone continued to perfect their putting skills with the Foot Pool Table. My sons also pointed out that Zorb-Football is also available - I gather this is the next birthday party I will be organising! What great fun Zorb-Football looks - tiring but exciting! So many smiles and memories have been and will be made! Director of Footgolf Darren hasn’t always been in this ‘game’, up until Spring 2016 he was a PE Teacher. After coming to help at a children’s party as a Football playing parent he was hooked. Repeat visits happened quite quickly ... Darren was so impressed, he decided to join Gatwick Footgolf! His appointment also heralded another first at the club with the first Director of Footgolf in the country. His teaching background enables the club to offer teaching and coaching both at the course or at a school, with his portable Footgolf course!
