LETTER

From the PUBLISHER Personal health and wellness: it’s complicated, right? So many things define who we are – family, work, hobbies. How do we make time to squeeze everything in without feeling overwhelmed? My life is a constant balancing act. My workload is demanding and stressful. My girls’ school activities and athletics calendars are busier than I can comprehend at times, so something has to give – and it’s usually my temper. Because I am a creature of habit, I am always the best version of myself when I have a schedule in place that involves some down time. When the size of the to-do list doesn’t allow for some yoga or a date-night with the hubs, chaos prevails. Although I have somewhat adapted to the chaos since having children, I still struggle with balancing my stress levels when we are over committed. We all know that stress is a killer, but there really is no avoiding it.

This spring I’m making the time to find balance. Even though scheduling a night away is a logistical nightmare, Adam and I did it and we had the best little staycation at The French Manor Inn and Spa. We celebrated Juliet and Cathryn’s birthday at NOTE Fragrances in Scranton, where eight of us made our own signature perfumes. If you are looking for the perfect Mother’s Day gift, this is a wonderful ladies day, champagne and truffles included. I brought Scarlett, my 10 year-old, and we had such a blast! I also started training at DT Fitness in Pocono Summit to get in shape for the Scranton Half Marathon on April 12th (and to lose my hibernation weight). After just two weeks of training, I can honestly say my no-pain, no-gain fitness mentality has changed… for the better. Instead, I will adhere the corrective training method taught at DT Fitness not just because I am getting old, but because I noticed the benefits instantly. We also chose our much-deserving makeover contest winner. Read her story on page 26, you will be inspired. Speaking of makeovers, since Local Flair is 10, we decided it’s time for some change. This year we are introducing “Local Flair Everywhere,” a video version of the magazine that you can access at www.flairmag.com. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram to get updates on all things local. See you in May. Keep it local!

GIVE

flyin’, drivin’ fun with heart

By Juliet Dunham

B

y plane or by car, hundreds of hungry people flock to the Mt. Pocono Rotary Club's Annual Community Aviation Day Fly In/Drive In Breakfast every year. Held on the Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend, this rain or shine event boasts fun for the whole family- free airplane rides for children ages 8-17, aircraft, antique cars and military equipment displays, the Pocono Raceway pace car, and more. Vern Moyer, Event Co-Chair, adds, “Our 20th Memorial Day Ceremony will include the Military Honor Guard and presenting of the colors. There will be skydivers who will unfurl a giant American flag honoring our veterans and active service personnel. Community Aviation Day was created to give people the chance to come to the airport, see the airplanes, experience helicopter and airplane rides, and generally find out about how to get youth involved with aviation. It has grown to be one of Mt. Pocono Rotary’s largest fundraisers with over $100,000 distributed to non-profit and deserving causes throughout the community over the past 20 years. This year we will contribute to the The Greg Moyer Defibrillator Fund.” The Greg Moyer Defibrillator Fund strives donate Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) to non-profits, assist other organizations in purchasing AEDs, educate the general public about AEDs, facilitate training in CPR and AED use, and increase awareness and action for support of state and federal legislation related to AEDs in schools and public facilities. The 501c3 founded in 2000 by John and Rachel Moyer honors the life of Greg W. Moyer who died suddenly of cardiac arrest during a high school basketball game. An AED could have saved the fourteen year old's life. The Moyers work tirelessly in the Pocono Mountain area so other families don’t suffer their tragedy. The Fly In/Drive In Breakfast is an ideal platform for the organization to promote its mission as well as a terrific fundraising opportunity. With many local business sponsoring the festivities, Mt. Pocono Rotary Club hopes to raise a record-setting amount of money for The Greg Moyer Defibrillator Fund.

MAKING IT AT NOTE FRAGRANCES

By Juliet Dunham

Birthdays. Showers. Girls’ Night. Bachelorette. The list of events for which we buy gifts is never ending. In a Pinterest obsessed world, pressure mounts to find the best idea/bargain/wrapping/everything for every gifting event. I’m an experience person – I’d rather LIVE it than unwrap it. To celebrate my birthday this year, I thought it would be fun to visit the Custom Perfume Studio at NOTE Fragrances in downtown Scranton. When I discovered that Danielle and her team host Private Perfume Parties, I was completely sold. A few girlfriends were excited at the idea and so we headed to the corner of Spruce and Wyoming. Nine of us gathered in the boutique and chatted, ultimately sitting down with champagne, mineral water, strawberries, and truffles. Before each of us was a Perfumer’s Organ where fifty vials of fragrance and essential oils fit into scent families such as “Fresh,” “Floral,” and “Earthy.” A perfume pyramid explained how scent is built with base, middle, and top notes. Most importantly, the team of Scentologists mingled with us, guiding the creation of our own unique fragrances. Before unleashing us with paper wands, known by the professionals as fragrance blotters, and freedom to smell, Danielle encouraged us all to sample the Frangipani vial. As she explained the fragrance notes and complimenting scents, she introduced us to the magical world of perfumery. She encouraged us to be bold and be honest. Perfume is very personal and completely visceral: when you find your scent you know it. Our group was a varied one ranging in age from 10 to 50, representing a broad spectrum of careers, hobbies, life choices, and temperaments. As we started, each of us gravitated to vials that we knew we liked. I dipped my first wand blotter into Sandalwood. As we progressed towards the 3-7 wand blotter combination that would result in a bottle of our signature scent, there were moments of doubt. “Just give me a bottle of ‘Deanne!’ exclaimed Sarah, frustrated to not have found the right blend and envious of Deanne’s perfume. Danielle soothed, “Trust the process, I promise it will come to you.” And it did. Sarah nailed it! We waffed and waved and sniffed. We sampled each other’s final products, marveling at the cheery, citrus notes of Scarlett’s and earthiness of Cathryn’s. We gladly accepted input from Danielle and Alyssa when we couldn’t find that missing piece to our perfume puzzle. It was a perfect Sunday afternoon. Creating our “scent story” was one part science, one part art, and many parts heart. We learned a little more about each other, and certainly something about ourselves. I’m headed back to NOTE for Mother’s Day with my mother, sister, sisters-in-law, and my trusty nasal palate. Bottling memories, friendship, and a good time was the best gift I’ve found.

ARKADIA SKIN CARE & DAY SPA

By Karen Tetor

Michele Gallagher still thanks her husband for the anniversary gift he gave her six years ago. “He bought me a full treatment package at Arkadia,” she says, as she literally glows about her introduction to the Stroudsburg skin care and day spa. “And ever since then, I have been a regular here! No one else touches my face other than Arkadia.” No one, except for Michele’s husband, who continues to slip her skin care gift certificates for special occasions. Arkadia Stanczak, owner of Arkadia Skin Care and Day Spa, has an appointment book filled with repeat clients who take their skin care seriously. I especially love the client who comes in with the same greeting: ‘My skin is asking for Arkadia today!’” Arkadia laughs. For almost 30 years, her skill as an aesthetician (a skin care expert) has drawn those who seek remedies for skin problems as well as those who languish in the relaxing effects of skin treatment. Her talent as a schooled interior designer manifests itself in the elegance and style of the spa itself. “I listen,” says Arkadia. “The face is very personal. Touching it requires trust.” Arkadia asks clients about their facial routines, their diet, their allergies and related health issues. “Your stress level, hormones, habits, and environment all surface on your skin,” she explains. “Actually, the minute I meet a client, I look at his or her skin, and I know.” She recommends treatments. “I do extraction, microdermabrasion, hydrating facials, glycolic acid or enzyme peels, electric facials, and ultrasonic or ionic penetration—all kinds of professional services.” Arkadia specializes in deep pore extraction, a technique that distinguishes her “European Facial” from the more typical American facial. “I use pressure to remove the impurities,” she explains. People try to use over-thecounter products to cleanse or even cover-up facial skin problems. An aesthetician can properly work out the impurities beneath the surface to squeeze out clogged pores. I use professional equipment and products not available in retail stores.” Arkadia admits, however, that her own highly trained, licensed hands are her best tools. Arkadia Skincare and Day Spa is located at 425 Main Street in Stroudsburg. To book your appointment, or for more information, call 570.476.8048.

ARKADIA’S “REGULARS” INCLUDE: • A 14-year-old whose acne breakouts are relieved through European facial technique to squeeze out the impurities clogging the pores.

• A 32-year-old whose regularly scheduled relaxing facials ease her job stress. And who periodically indulges herself in firming and anti-cellulite coffee wraps.

• A 78-year-old blessed with Mediterranean skin, which produced nourishing oils. She now comes monthly for European Facials to cleanse her pores of impurities build-up.

• A 24-year-old athlete comes every month to exfoliate the damage done to her skin by sun and wind. “And she loves the electric facial,” says Arkadia. “It’s a gym workout for your face: skin exfoliation, muscle stimulation, collagen ampoule penetration - all done by electrical equipment.”

• A 46-year-old woman whose menopausal blemish breakouts are alleviated by ultrasonic scrubbing, which also reduces acne scars, wrinkles and pigmentation problems.

• People of all ages who come for microdermabrasion at least twice a year to reduce or even remove small scars, large pores, hyperpigmented spots, fine line stretch marks and wrinkles by painlessly exfoliating the outer layers of skin—accomplished by a computerized machine which projects inert crystals in a fine layer over the skin!

• A 50-year-old who has tired of drug-store products promising to reduce wrinkles. She benefits from the 100% collagen ampoules Arkadia massages into the skin—as well as the lifting treatments and collagen masks.

After the bionic winter and left with only six weeks to train for the Scranton Half Marathon, I needed some help, so I called DT Fitness Group in Pocono Summit... By Ali Schratt I’ve always been a member of the no-pain, no-gain work out club, so, when I started working out with Lindsay, I was surprised (pleasantly) to be introduced to a gentler form of training. Rather than hitting the weights and pounding the treadmill, I get barefoot and correct my form and flaws on the TRX – a total body resistance suspension machine. Although there is some pain the day (or two or three) after working out, it is manageable. Lindsay and Bob, owners of DT Fitness Group took some time to talk to Local Flair about their business in Pocono Summit. Local Flair: What is the philosophy behind corrective training? DT Fitness: Corrective Exercise, also known as therapeutic exercise, is defined as any exercise planned and performed to attain a specific physical benefit, such as maintenance of the range of motion, strengthening of weakened muscles, increased joint flexibility or improved cardiovascular and respiratory function. When we talk about "corrective exercise," we are referring to correcting any postural distortions or muscle imbalances that are present in the body. Gravity, injuries and prolonged periods of sitting contribute to muscle groups not firing properly. Our muscles don't work independently of each other, they work synergistically to produce movement. When one group isn't upholding its part of the chain, the other groups involved will over-compensate to continue the movement patterns. This usually results in injury. To assure our clients exercise safely with minimal risk of injury and get the most effective results from their workouts, we work on the troubled areas. For example, we will analyze a client's squat pattern. An incorrect squat pattern can showcase imbalances in the body. If we see an excessive forward lean, we automatically know which muscles are too tight and which muscles are weak. From there, we follow a protocol of self-myofascial release (static stretching and strengthening) to correct the issue. LF: What is your personal philosophy at the DT Fitness Group? What do you want to see most from your clients? DTF: We want to make fitness personal. We want our clients to have fun while maintaining a realistic approach to exercise and weight loss. We strive to take a very individualized approach to training our clients because we know every body is not cookie cutter. What works for one person doesn't necessarily work for the next. We also want to foster an atmosphere of self-improvement rather than one of competition. We love to see our clients’ little improvements that project them toward larger goals. They get excited when they are getting stronger, when they can hold a plank a little longer or they make improvements on their rowing times. These are the things that make our job so worthwhile!

16

Local Flair

LF: Tell me a little bit about your personal weight loss story. DTF: Bob and I have both lost significant amounts of weight. I went from 206lbs to 160lbs. It was a long road, one that took over five years. I would start, lose some, then creep back up, then repeat the frustrating process. We are role models for the people we train at the gym, so I want to practice what I preach while building my endurance, energy level and overall wellness. I also have an eight year-old son who has my body type. I want to be a positive role model for him and teach him about exercise and eating healthy. I don't want him to battle the same kind of body crisis I had growing up. Bob lost 90 lbs, mostly as a result of injury. He hurt his back and didn't want to have surgery. Bob began working on the TRX, cycling, getting himself on the right path to wellness. This is when he decided to start a career in fitness. We are human: we understand the struggles of the average person because we have been there. LF: Tell me about a client success story. DTF: We have a client named Christopher who was an avid competition level cyclist and an artist. He suffered a very bad cycling accident six years ago that left him with significant brain damage. He began training with Bob two years ago. At that point, he was walking with a walker and had very little strength or muscular control. Over the course of two years through a consistent exercise regimen, Chris is able to walk on his own. He is regaining muscular strength, control and awareness. LF: What is happening through spring and summer at DT Fitness? DTF: June 6th officially marks our first year of business! We are planning to have a big community BBQ to celebrate. We are in the process of working with Josie Porter Farm to introduce a Farm-toBox program, where farm fresh organic produce can be ordered and picked up at the gym. Summer means the return of our outdoor Bootcamps and Mud Run training programs. Lots of big things are coming up for us, and we couldn't be more excited! FEATURE Stroud Compounding Pharmacy is a prescription problem-solving specialist. Stroud Compounding & Wellness Pharmacy works closely with physicians and patients to compound customized medications specific to each patient's individual needs. For compounded, custom medications, bio-identical or natural hormone replacement therapy, topical pain medication, special diabetic medications, veterinary medicine and more, Stroud Compounding has the solution. Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) is a specialty of Stroud Compounding. Because there are many opinions regarding BRHT, we asked Danica Garcia (Pharmacist) to fill us in on the facts. Local Flair: Who should consider hormone replacement therapy? Stroud Compounding: The body’s natural aging process involves a decline in the body’s hormones resulting in hormonal imbalance. At the same time, we are exposed to environmental and dietary toxins, which also contribute to hormonal imbalance. As a result, you might experience a combination of these symptoms: hot flashes, memory loss, fatigue, intimacy issues, anxiety, depression, mood swings, and poor concentration. If you experience any of these symptoms, you will benefit from hormone replacement therapy.

stroud compounding discusses hormone replacement therapy By Ali Schratt

LF: Tell us the difference between natural hormone replacement therapy vs. BHRT? SC: “Natural” hormone replacement therapy is a misnomer; in the sense that not everything that comes from natural sources, such as plants and animals, are safe and produce good results. Some of the products available on the market are made from yak or horse urine, and may not be exactly identical in structure as to what the body produces. The more appropriate term to use is bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT). Bio-identical hormones are the exact replica of the hormones that are naturally produced in the body. Since they are the same structure, they will mimic the effects of estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone in the body. This gives bio-identical hormone therapy the advantage that it will be more effective and produce minimal side effects. LF: What are the benefits of BHRT? SC: Aside from the relief of all the symptoms stated above, balancing one’s hormones has proven to have positive effects on the following areas: heart health, improvement on cholesterol levels, promotes healthy bone growth, improves sleep and mood, builds muscles, and improvement with the memory. LF: Who should NOT consider BHRT? SC: Some contraindications for BHRT would be women with active liver disease, active or history of breast or uterine cancer, and blood clot. LF: How long until I see results from BRHT? SC: Every patient will have a different experience since hormonal therapy varies from person to person. Most patients begin feeling better within a few weeks to months. However, some patients may take longer to feel the effects. Regardless, being compliant and working with your doctor will improve your results. LF: What are the benefits of BHRT? SC: Aside from the relief of all the symptoms stated above, balancing one’s hormones has proven to have positive effects on the following areas: heart health, improvement on cholesterol levels, promotes healthy bone growth, improves sleep and mood, builds muscles, memory improvement and most importantly – quality of life. My regular encounter with patients is that they are going out of their mind trying to figure out what is wrong with them for the past couple of months. During our initial consultation, I explain that all the symptoms they are experiencing are normal for a women undergoing menopause. But the good thing about it is we have a solution to their problems. And before you know it, patients feel so much better and the hormones do change their lives and their relationships for the best. t Stroud Oral and Facial in Stroudsburg, Dr. Thomas E. Helfst manages a wide variety of problems relating to the mouth, teeth and facial regions. Dr. Helfst practices a full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery with expertise ranging from dental implant surgery and wisdom tooth removal to corrective jaw surgery. Dr. Helfst and his team also diagnose and treat facial pain, facial injuries, and fractures. An entire portion of the Stroud Oral and Facial services, though, are aesthetically driven. Botox, Juvederm, facial peels and more are offered in the state of the art office located on Route 611. For Dr. Helfst the transition from Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery to Facial Cosmetic Procedures he offers is a smooth one. The facial cosmetic procedures he offers are a natural extension to his existing surgery. He explains that working with his orthodontic colleagues on jaw procedures translates well to alterations of the cheek bones, nose, lips, and chin regions as these are directly influenced by moving the jaws into their ideal position. Therefore, including adjunctive procedures during orthognathic (corrective jaw surgery) such as a rhinoplasty or chin augmentation makes perfect sense. We asked Dr. Helfst to give us the breakdown of elective surgeries and procedures that can help refresh appearances – turning frown lines upside down, reducing sagging skin, and even eliminating age spots are just the start. Dr. Helfst and his team have solutions for every age and every budget! To schedule a consultation call 570.420.8180.

He Loves Me

Ahhhhh – a night away with my husband. I can see it now; pure relaxation, quiet time, laughing and joking, romance. Sure, after we coordinate practice drop-off and pick-up, dinner for kids, care for dog and following day tournament logistics. If you are anything like me, your schedule is chaos and you must be strategic in how you use (or overuse) your support system. But, once we finally checked-in to our room at The French Manor Inn and Spa, the stress melted away as we looked out at the view of the Poconos from the deck. Oh, and the roses, chocolate and wine waiting for us didn’t hurt either! We poured a glass of wine, dug in to our snacks and kicked our feet up in front of the fireplace and tried to have a conversation that didn’t involve kids, sports, business or home repairs for an hour before we headed over to dinner. Adam and I were married at The French Manor 15 years ago. We had such a beautiful fall wedding and we always love returning. Since purchasing the property in 1990, the Logans have transformed the French Manor into a full service romantic country inn. They have endeavored to keep the elegant flavor of the manor while making subtle and important changes. The kitchen was upgraded to accommodate dinner service and, the unoccupied Carriage House was remodeled into a guesthouse with two rooms and two suites. Most recently the Logans constructed the La Maisonneuve building (meaning the New House in French), which now houses six romantic suites each with a fireplace, jacuzzi and a private balcony with the view of the northern Pocono Mountains. This is where we stayed. The food is delicious and beautiful. It is the perfect complement to a romantic evening. We started with soup- lobster and truffle bisque for me. French onion for Adam. Perfect filet mignon and exquisite fish for entrées followed by the cutest ice cream sandwich for two. Inspired food does wonders for the soul. Their new green spa, Le Spa Foret, offers five additional fireplace and jacuzzi suites all with private balconies with inspiring views. An indoor pool and hot tub as well as a fitness room adds to guests’ overall enjoyment at The French Manor. We had a couple’s massage before heading over to breakfast where we melted into our seats! I’m still amazed at how a place four miles from my home felt like another world completely. When life has you running crazy- it’s easy to lose touch with what is truly important. A little date night works miracles in my house and makes me remember why I married Adam Schratt in the first place. Share your favorite #poconostaycation with us on Instagram and enter to win a a getaway for two in October! To find out more about the beautiful French Manor Inn and Spa go to frenchmanor.com or phone 570.676.3244 for dinner reservations.

e received dozens of nominations for women deserving our Spring Makeover. Choosing the winner had its challenges; there are so many fabulous moms, sisters, wives, daughters, and friends in the Poconos who deserve some pampering! 17 year old Robert Lugo’s nomination captured our judges’ hearts. Here’s a glimpse of what he said:

“I would like to nominate my mother, Brunhilda Lugo, for the Local Flair makeover. She is an extraordinary woman who has been fostering kids for fifteen years. I've been fortunate enough to

be with this woman and see the magic that she makes showing all of us what it's like to have a real family. She deserves this makeover not only in thanks for the great things she has done for so many, but because she never has time for herself and could use a little pick-me-up.” Bruni arrived at Shear Brilliance Salon Stroudsburg smiling and ready for pampering. Celebrity stylist Miguel Rodriguez excitedly set out to freshen up her look with highlights, a haircut, treatments, and style. “I just want to soften her look and give her something she can do easily since she is so busy,” he explained. Once hair and makeup was complete, Bruni modeled fashions from American Candle which include shoes by Brighton, top and pants by Clara Sun Woo, jewelry by Brighton, and finished with a scarf by Ganz. “I had so much fun. It was such a joyous day. Miguel did an amazing job! I’m so grateful!”

at a loss

A person suffering from dementia may: • Exhibit recent memory loss, such as asking a question repeatedly without remembering having asked it • Have difficulty with everyday tasks • Have problems communicating, such as forgetting words or using incorrect words • Feel disoriented with time and place, which can include getting lost in a familiar area or forgetting how he or she got there • Misplace items and forget them • Have mood or personality changes If you notice any of these changes in a loved one, take note of the behavior and consult a doctor. There are tests your doctor can perform that can gauge the patient’s language abilities, orientation to time and place, and attention. Though there is no known cure, dementia can be managed by treating symptoms or even slowing the progression of the disorder. Caring for someone with dementia takes an understanding of the problems he or she face from the disorder. Unfortunately, there are several myths about dementia that make it difficult to know what your loved one is going through.

Here are just a few myths debunked: Myth: People with dementia don’t know what is happening. Fact: It is easy to assume that because a person with dementia is not communicative, that he or she do not understand what is happening around him or her; however, the part of the brain that handles communication is not the same as the part that handles awareness. Even if your loved one is having issues communicating, he or she likely still has thoughts that he or she would like to communicate and understands his or her situation.

A

s we age, many of us joke about “going senile” if we start forgetting or repeating things, but dementia is not a normal part of aging. Dementia is an umbrella term that is used to describe the symptoms that people with brain disorders or damage may have with memory, thinking, and language. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia, affecting between 60 and 80 percent of Americans with dementia.

38

Myth: People with dementia are incompetent. Fact: Competency depends upon the stage of dementia your loved one is in. Most dementia patients in early stages are capable of making many personal decisions, so there must be a balance between independence and reliance. Myth: You should correct people with dementia when they are wrong. Fact: Correcting someone with dementia is not generally necessary and, if done consistently, can lead to feelings of depression, aggression, or even further confusion. Myth: People with dementia are violent. Fact: Though aggression can occur in dementia patients, it is a sign that something is making the patient uncomfortable or upset. Being tolerant, communicating with the patient, and taking notes on your loved one’s behavior can help reduce instances of aggression.

HISTORICAL ECONOMIC REPORT

Ever since the 2008 financial crisis, investors have waited for the economy and the markets to return to “normal”. However, year after year, wage growth has been modest, part-time and contractual jobs have dominated employment and interest rates have remained stubbornly low. What many investors have difficulty understanding is; this might be normal, at least for a while. It is human nature to assume that conditions one has experienced for much of one’s life is normal. However, when viewed through the lens of history, the postWWII era was anything but normal. It was the product of the U.S. rebuilding a world devastated by the war. Growth and Consumption was fueled by a baby boom and driven higher by these “babies” becoming adults. Maturing Boomers drove demand for homes, consumer goods and food to record levels. It was not just the total demand, but the pace at which demand expanded. Boomers entering the labor force and consumer market was a shock to the economy. Beginning about 1964, Boomers began to flood into the economy. It is probably no coincidence that it was about that time that interest rates and inflation pressures began to rise. Yes, there were other causes, but the sharp rise in demand caused by Boomers cannot be denied. By the 1970s, the youngest Boomers were in their peak earnings years. By the 1990s and early 2000s, the entire Boomer generation was somewhere within the peak earnings demographic. Today the situation is very different. Boomers are leaving the ranks of earners just as fast as they entered about 50 years ago. This promises to be a multi-decade trend. The demand for fixed income investments (for preservation of capital and reliable income, rather than asset performance diversification) should be significant. The result should be subdued bond yields and (by extension) interest rates.

by Thomas Byrne Director of Fixed Income Wealth Strategies & Management LLC Stroudsburg, PA 570-424-1555 Office E-mail: thomas.byrne@wsandm.com www.wsandm.com

However, interest rates are mainly set by inflation. Inflation derives from increased consumption (too much money chasing too few goods and services) or devalued currency. An aging population, greater production efficiencies and a flexible labor force (thanks to technology and globalization) promises to hold down prices. As for currency-derived inflation: Thanks to significant structural deficiencies in foreign economies (Europe, Japan and even China), the U.S. dollar could remain strong for years to come. This all points to low inflation (at least official measures), low wage growth and low interest rates. Rather than waiting for the old normal to return, it is time to invest for the new normal. To do this, one must have economic and market knowledge or partner with someone who does. Pre-fabricated “one-size-fits-all” models (mainly developed by looking back) might not do the trick. Being forward looking and acknowledging that the economy is ever-changing will probably be critical for successful investing during the next two decades.

(1) High yield/junk bonds (grade BB or below) are not investment grade securities, and are subject to higher interest rate, credit, and liquidity risks than those graded BBB and above. They generally should be part of a diversified portfolio for sophisticated investors. (2) International and emerging market investment involves special risks, such as currency fluctuation and political instability and may not be suitable for all investors. (3) Municipal bonds are subject to availability and change in price. They are subject to market and interest rate risk if sold prior to maturity. Bond values may decline as interest rates rise. Interest income may be subject to the alternative minimum tax. Many Municipal bonds are federally tax-free but other state and local taxes may apply. (4) Mortgage backed securities are subject to credit, default, prepayment, extension, market and interest rate risk.

a new era for fleur-de-lis

Nearly ten years ago, Josephine Mero and Martha Loomis created and opened Josephine's Fleur-de-lis at 601 Main Street in Downtown Stroudsburg. The stylish gift shop, known for its wide selection of jewelry lines, home decor and bright red stucco exterior with the black fleur-de-lis, is reaching the end of an era. Josephine and Martha are looking to sell their store this Spring. We spoke to Martha about the future of Josephine's Fleur-de-lis. Local Flair: How has being part of the downtown community impacted your business? ML: We chose Downtown Stroudsburg because we wanted to be part of a small town, literally be on Main Street USA. Our store is located in the heart of town, which is the center of Monroe County and the Pocono Mountains, an expanding tourist region. Downtown Stroudsburg, and in turn, Josephine’s Fleur-de-lis are destinations for both area residents and vacationers. LF: What have you enjoyed the most these past ten years? ML: The best part has been our customers. They have been our inspiration and the primary reason for our store. As a result of their input, we significantly expanded our jewelry lines five years ago. I love it when I can help our customers choose the perfect gift or treat for themselves. When they come into our store, they know that they can leave their cares behind. LF: What’s next for Josephine’s Fleur-de-lis? ML: We are looking to sell our store to someone who has dreamed of owning their own boutique… someone who is interested in building on our success. We offer an award-winning store design, a wide variety of exclusive brands, a strong customer base, a robust e-commerce website, a comprehensive electronic inventory system, and a growing social media presence. We are looking for someone who wants to be in business immediately. LF: And what is next for Josephine and you? ML: Josephine will continue her successful psychotherapy practice in Mountainhome. And I am looking to leverage my multifunctional Corporate and retail experience into a management position in the tourist industry here in the Poconos. Tourism drives much of the growth here. I would like to be part of this growth and success.
