Yoga twice a week, massage once a month, hair, nails and skin cared for on schedule and routine visits all in check. THE FARM ANIMAL FROLIC AT QUIET VALLEY FARM

words | DEBBIE BURKE

Baby animals and old-time farm demonstrations will delight children and adults alike at the upcoming Farm Animal Frolic at Quiet Valley Farm in Stroudsburg. Now in its 29th year, the farm is expecting new bunnies, chicks, piglets, baby goats, lambs, ducklings and at least one calf. “How many of each we will have is not up to me, it’s up to Mother Nature,” says Cheryl Statham, director of education and programs.

The event will also offer wagon rides, musical entertainment, reenactments, children’s games, crafts, hay jumps, and homemade, just-baked food. Founded in 1963, Quiet Valley became a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit in the early 1970s. Each year, attendance at the Farm Animal Frolic varies (depending on the weather) from 2500-3500 visitors over both weekends. These numbers have been growing steadily over the last five years, notes Cheryl. The farm hosts three major events each year: Farm Frolic, Harvest Festival and Old Time Christmas. This is in addition

to the farm tours, which run from April to November. In addition, special weekend events during the summer and fall include Garden Party Day, Children’s Day, Music in the Valley and Spooky Days. During the winter, the Education Center runs special programs for groups with reservations. In a sense, the farm is a living organism. “We are always busy, even if we don’t have visitors or school classes coming to see us,” Cheryl says. “There is always work to do.” Staff and volunteers pitch in year-round to take care of the animals, do the planting, weeding and harvesting, work on building maintenance and repairs, and practice old skills and learn new ones, as well as conduct historical research and train staff.

raising Ebboni Gaspard is the proud owner of Above The Bar Soap Co. in Pocono Summit. You might say the craft of making soap is in her blood. By the time she was five, her beloved, late grandmother had taught her how to make her first bar while her adoptive mother taught her the tricks of the trade to make lotions, creams and other remedies to help care for the skin, naturally. Life took an unexpected direction for Gaspard. She grew up in Binghamton, New York and studied to become a nurse. Soap-making took a backseat to her career and young family. It wasn’t until being asked to attend a class at a Women’s Center in Binghamton that she was unexpectedly drawn back to her roots. “I was pregnant with my youngest daughter, Kyrah, and I decided to go to the class with Swantje. To my surprise it was a soap making class and my passion was instantly reignited! All that I had tried to forget resurfaced like a light piercing through the dark. I remembered everything that was passed down to me from my mother and I took off with it, never to let go again.” Ebboni has been perfecting her soap, lotion and body scrub recipes for over 14 years. Her first boutique, E-Ky Jewelry & Gifts, never seemed to get the right message across about her products. “My clients would come in and say, ‘people have no clue that you make these amazing products, they think that you’re just a gift shop until they come in to your store’.” Ebboni explained how the new name found her: “I’ve done my fair

share of craft fairs and shows, which I still love to do. I noticed that there was a difference in how I displayed my product, how I packaged my product, and most important my ingredients. Other bath and body vendors would always come over to my booth and compliment my work. They would ask my opinion on how to do certain things in the business and I was always happy to answer. So, one day I was getting ready for a show and I looked at one of my bath bars and honestly it just hit me {that it should be called ‘Above The Bar’}. In that moment I realized there was nothing wrong with wanting the absolute best for my clients and for me. If my goal is to be the best - then why not have the best name to fit with the best all natural, handcrafted creations. So, I changed my business name and haven’t looked back since!” Above the Bar products are all made with the highest quality ingredients at her studio/retail space. The all natural soapery is now located in Pocono Summit, Pennsylvania, where she creates her entire line of luxury bath and body products. Ebboni only uses the finest ingredients in her product line and she prides herself on quality and the little extra personal touch. At the shop, you will find over 75 custom fragrances, bath and body care and custom skin care regimens which promise to deliver healthy, glowing and radiant skin. In addition to luxury bath & body care, Above the Bar also offers a wide range of custom made handcrafted gift items that are sure to delight.

boundless We are all working towards becoming the best version of ourselves… well, maybe not all of us, but some of us definitely. I picture my best version like this: I am completely relaxed because I have met all of my deadlines, the house is clean and laundry is done, kids are on task and everyone knows where they are going, when they are going and how they are getting there. I am calm, focused and have zero anxiety - I am completely tied to the present moment. It’s a dream of mine to be this person every single moment, but it is so easy to slip out of the zone. I personally think one of yoga’s biggest benefits is it helps us regain or find our center. Boundless Yoga has two locations in the Pocono Mountains aimed at helping us come back to earth. The Stroudsburg and Mt. Pocono studios offer a variety of classes for both beginner and advanced students. Chris Loebsack, owner and Acro-Yoga practitioner extraordinaire has built a remarkable life through Yoga. She fell in love with yoga in 1995 and began teaching in 2003. Her certifications, degrees and continuing studies, which are too countless to list here, have allowed her to use the power of yoga to create a space for students that cultivates trust, playfulness and Divine connection with themselves and with their community at Boundless. Chris lives by her mantra of ‘Clarity, Integrity and Love’, and she and her husband, Brian Davis who also instructs at Boundless, draw upon their

AcroYoga blends the wisdom of yoga, the dynamic power of acrobatics, and the loving kindness of healing arts. Chris treated me to the Tuesday evening beginner class in Mt. Pocono. The practice is the perfect place to start if you are at all apprehensive, or are new to yoga. Gentle breathing, stretching and poses work together to aid in loosening your joints and calming your mind. I loved every minute of it and felt much taller and more calm. I was curious about Acro-Yoga. “Get on,” were Chris’ directions for me and I replied, “I will crush your legs!” But, as Chris took me through several of the restorative poses I felt my nervousness begin to fade. I was in the air for two minutes max, in a variety of positions and when I came back to earth I sincerely felt lighter and extremely energized. “We all need to play more,” Chris said, and I so agree!

words | ALI SCHRATT

Opened in 2007, Pure Day Spa is celebrating 10 years of business in Downtown Stroudsburg. Mary Nauman, owner and lifelong Stroudsburg resident, mother and grandmother, was zipping around the spa on a busy day when I stopped in for a visit. The elegant and warm atmosphere is so relaxing, you’ll leave your stress at the door. Although waiting for a few details, the spa has undergone a remodel this year and all six fresh, modern treatment rooms are adorned by state of the art equipment. When creating Pure, Mary explained, “I wanted an atmosphere that when you walked in our door you instantly felt relaxed and at home. I want every client to have a great experience and to leave happy. I consider my staff my “spa” family.” After 10 successful years in business, she is most thankful for so many wonderful clients and her amazing staff. With seven massage therapists, five spa techs who specialize in giving facials, manicures, pedicures, gels, waxing and more, Pure has the perfect treatment for everyone. “We are known for giving the best pedicure in town,” explains Nauman. “Our facials are terrific and rejuvenating. We use the Yon-Ka skin care line, and all of our massage therapists are amazing.” Yon-Ka was created in Paris in 1954. The company prides itself on educating their professionals to give each customer a visible result and a real sensation of well-being. “Everyone needs a skin care regimen,” explains Mary, “Not only girls, but also boys should get facials. Puberty is when most skin problems occur, and that is when to start at Pure.” Facials are important for many reasons: deep cleansing, extractions for clear pores, professional strength exfoliation, massage for lymphatic drainage, masks and peels for a healthy

BIRD’S EYE Perched on a hill,

overlooking Blue Mountain Ski Area, is a finely crafted timberframe that RW Buff Construction built. Owners JoAnna and John Horne could not be happier with their new home. The couple has been vacationing for years in the Pocono Mountains. Two of John’s family members own small cabins not far from their property. The Hornes purchased the property in 2009 and started camping on weekends when they could get away from their full-time life in Delaware. “We started coming up and slowly clearing trees. We knew we wanted a timberframe, but we didn’t commit to building until last year,” JoAnna laughed. “Now that the house is finished, it’s affectionately called the ‘Big House’ and everyone ends up here!” Trademark RW Buff details are everywhere throughout the three-bedroom, three-bath home. High quality quartz tops every counter, the stair railings are made of hand forged wrought iron and a custom-built island in the kitchen (which acts as the couple’s dining table) was custom built by Joe Holbert, General Manager and craftsman at RW Buff. The

view Hornes had originally contracted with another builder, but were glad when it didn’t work out. JoAnna explained, “When we started working with RW Buff and Joe, I had this feeling that I wouldn’t even have to come to the house to check on things - because I knew everything would be done exactly how we wanted them.” JR Flooring, Stroud Appliance and RC Electric worked closely with RW Buff to handle the hardwood flooring, outfitting the gourmet kitchen and all of the electrical work. “We poured the basement on May 12th and everyone worked so hard to make sure we were in our house by our goal date of Thanksgiving,” said JoAnna. Of course JoAnna’s favorite part of the house is the view, where you can see skiers enjoying Blue Mountain - but other touches like the oversized door and chandeliers handed down from a family member make the house special. “John and I leave Delaware Thursday night and stay here until we have to leave for work early Monday morning,” JoAnna said. “One of the contractors told us there is a lot of Indian history here, that the land is sacred - and we can feel it every time we come.”

words | ALI SCHRATT

The Growing Concern School is a Montessori preschool, kindergarten, and elementary school located in Tannersville, Pennsylvania. Although a private school, this non-profit organization is licensed by the PA Department of Education. They have been using the Montessori method of educating children from preschool through elementary for more than 40 years. The Montessori philosophy is simple; Dr. Maria Montessori believed that no human being can be educated by another person. The student must educate himself. Montessori believed truly educated individuals continue learning long after the hours and years spent in the classroom, because they are motivated from within by a natural curiosity and love for knowledge. Dr. Montessori felt the goal of early childhood education should not be to fill the child with facts from a pre-selected course of studies, but rather to cultivate her own natural desire to learn. In the Montessori classroom this objective is approached in two ways: first, by allowing each child to experience the excitement of learning by his or her own choice rather than by being forced; and second, by helping each child perfect their natural tools for learning, so that his or her ability will be at a maximum in future learning situations. The Montessori materials serve this dual long-range purpose in addition to their immediate purpose of giving specific information to the

child. There are two classrooms at Growing Concern: three to six years and first through sixth grades. The younger kids work a predominantly activity-based schedule while the older children begin to work in group lessons. Montessori discovered putting older and younger ages together helped them learn from and teach one another. The older kids help and teach the younger kids which builds their confidence and the younger children, in turn, have role models to look to for guidance and reassurance. Another major difference of Montessori is there are no grades. The belief is that grades focus too strictly on results and become a point of stress, which distracts the child from his or her natural joy of learning. On observation of the classrooms, I couldn’t help but notice the calm focus of the children. Without being told, they push their chairs in, put their supplies away and are respectful of each other and of their teachers. They move around the classroom working on their daily projects under their own direction. When a child has a question or is stuck on solving a problem, the teachers will guide them or ‘coach’ them through the issue. Each child works at hiw own pace. “Through the various hands-on learning activities and group lessons, the children start to see things at a concrete level,” explained Suzie, the first through sixth grade teacher. She continued, “It’s visual learning so they see the whole picture. They understand bigger concepts

The Pre K teacher is Raheela Chaudry and there are currently three aides in the room. Some of the educator and administrators have been with the school for over 30 years. The Growing Concern School serves the Pocono Mountain Region of Northeast Pennsylvania including Monroe County, Pike County, Carbon County, and Northampton County. The school is also a short drive from the Lehigh Valley and western New Jersey. ECD connections

a lifeline for pocono families words | DEBBIE BURKE

Their tagline is: Your child, our promise. They are ECD Connections, which stands for Early Childhood Development, and they are all about early intervention for families to provide the best opportunities possible for children with developmental needs. Owner Michele Mann says, “ECD Connections was born out of my desire to work with and help little ones who have developmental delays. From birth through age three is my favorite time, because you see the most success then.”

Your first point of contact is ECD. We’ll help you get all the help you need for your little one and family. Any family member can call and request an evaluation. An example is a parent who feels his or her child doesn’t talk the same way his or her peers do. Says Michele, “I tell parents to trust their instincts about how their child acts compared to other children their age. They can just call with their concerns and we will do the rest.” Sometimes the doctor or daycare center contacts ECD, expressing concern about a child they’re working with.

The services provided by ECD are two-fold. The agency provides early intervention in the homes of children and their families, helping them with strategies for improving the child’s developmental levels from birth through age three. The other services are delivered at ECD’s Stroudsburg office, where families can bring their little ones, ages birth through five, for intense speech, physical and occupational therapies.

The staff at ECD Connections are speech and language pathologists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, Registered Dietary Nutritionists and nurses. Some of their specialties include feeding, sensory integration, behavior specialties and more. All staff members are state-licensed in their respective fields. Michele herself has a background in

special education, with almost 30 years of experience. She’s worked with a wide range of different populations of children in need. Often when families begin services, they’re confused by the process or overwhelmed with the amount of information they’re receiving. ECD meets with them on an ongoing basis and reviews the different resources that are available and the groups they can get involved with. “Sometimes it’s just a cup of coffee and a quick chat about how they’re feeling about things,” adds Michele. Early intervention is funded through grants from the state and county government. ECD Connections takes most kinds of insurance. As to her future plans, Michele wants to be able to offer therapeutic advancements like listening therapies, yoga and infant massage, and a more in-depth sensory integration intervention. “As a teacher at heart, I would also love to offer training to my peers, first throughout Pennsylvania, and then throughout the country via a website for people to learn at their own pace,” she says. And the best part of her job? “I love coming to work every day and waiting to see if one of our little people achieves one of their milestones!”

ECD Connections now accepts all major insurances. Visit them at 814 Monroe St., Stroudsburg, PA 18360 For more information please visit www.ecdconnections.com or call 570.656.4047

A little more than one year ago,

Dr. Daniel Bair, DMD, MDS – Board Certified Periodontist and his brother Dr. Justin Bair, DMD – Board Certified Orthodontist opened Bair Orthodontics in East Stroudsburg. In discussing their practice, Dr. Daniel called it “an honor and a privilege” to work with patients in our community. Together he and his brother are helping to build awareness of good oral health. The first thing people often ask about is the difference between periodontics and orthodontics. According to Dr. Daniel Bair, periodontics is the dental specialty that focuses on treating gum diseases that result from bacteria invading tissues in the mouth, causing the body to break down bone and damage the supporting structures around the teeth. He adds, “Orthodontics is the dental specialty that seeks to straighten teeth and align the jaws to create the ideal aesthetic and functional outcome.” The most important recommendations for good oral health include meticulous home care on a daily basis and visiting a dental professional regularly to diagnose and treat dental disease at an early stage. It’s also important, adds Dr. Bair, to consider your dietary intake and avoid foods that are high in sugar or highly acidic to reduce the risk of forming cavities. Patients are often curious about whether dentures can be prevented. Dr. Daniel says that dental implants are often the best strategy to avoid the need for dentures, and your periodontist can help support dentures so the fit and retention are significantly improved. The goal is to keep as many natural teeth as possible for as long as possible. Another issue patients ask about is the effect of “vaping” (e-cigarettes) upon oral health. “Electronic cigarettes have significantly increased in popularity in recent years and over 460 e-cigarette brands are now available in the United States,” says Dr. Daniel. There has been relatively little long-term research published thus far regarding the direct physiologic effects of e-cigarettes on oral health. “However, concern has been raised about the risk of e-cigarette devices spontaneously exploding which can cause significant harm

26 Local Flair | April/May 2017

to the user,” he says. “There’s concern about the inclusion of nicotine as an ingredient which has been shown to have negative effects on the health of the tissues and bones in the mouth.” Parents should know that genetics play a role in the development and characteristics of teeth, and can predispose a person to conditions like congenitally missing teeth, crowding or spacing of teeth, and an unbalanced relationship between the upper and lower jaw. Orthodontics corrects the discrepancies to create a more ideal relationship. A tip-off for these kinds of problems would be when teeth are not positioned uniformly. It’s best to seek a consultation with an orthodontist by the time a child is seven years old, he says, to allow for ample time to intervene and correct any issues. Participation in sports can also compromise oral health. Proper precautions are important for children and adults when participating in athletic activities. According to Dr. Daniel, the National Youth Sports Safety Foundation found that athletes who don’t wear mouth guards are 60 times more likely to damage their teeth and an estimated three million teeth are knocked out in youth sports each year. Mouth guards help protect against trauma that can lead to permanent tooth damage or unnecessary loss of teeth. Dental professionals can create customized mouth guards that maximize protection and are comfortable to wear.

DR. JUSTIN B AIR

DR. DANIEL B AIR

Current research is coming out about the close association between periodontal disease and other systemic conditions like diabetes, heart disease and stroke. At-risk patients or patients who have been treated for any of these conditions should consult with a periodontist to evaluate the status of their gums. Dr. Daniel and Dr. Justin work well together and complement each other’s specialties. Dr. Daniel says, “It’s really a lot of fun. Being in the same office provides a lot of opportunities to discuss interesting cases and share unique perspectives on our individual specialties.”

UMESH DALAL, MD I decided to specialize in nephrology during my internal medicine residency in 1990 because of the complex medical issues associated with nephrology such as electrolyte imbalance, acid base issues and the effect of electrolyte abnormalities in day-to-day medicine.

MEET THE DOCTORS

JWALANT R. PATEL, MD My father is a doctor and as a growing kid I have seen my father treating patients with great love and respect, so I guess medicine was my primary affair. I have never thought about being anything other than a physician in my life. I was fascinated by dialysis during my medical training and that’s why I have decided to pursue nephrology as a carreer. (Dialysis is a lifesaving procedure that a kidney doctor performs when your kidney fails).

kidneys healthy. Controlling other associated medical problems like diabetes and hypertension is also a key to prevent or stop the progression of chronic kidney disease.

Umesh Dalal, MD: St. Luke’s will handle all aspects of kidney care including chronic care such as dialysis and hypertension and acute care such as electrolyte abnormalities. St. Luke’s will also handle kidney transplant in the Bethlehem campus.

Local Flair: What can a patient expect during their first visit with you? What is your philosophy for treatment?

Jwalant R. Patel, MD: I love treating all kinds of kidney diseases that includes but not limited to acute and chronic kidney disease, end stage Kidney disease including dialysis, metabolic work-up for kidney stone, hypertension, fluid and electrolytes disturbance and everything in between. Local Flair: What signs and symptoms do you look for in diagnosis of kidney disease? Umesh Dalal, MD: Kidney disease often has no signs or symptoms. It is asymptomatic and progressive therefore regular follow-up with a nephrologist and blood testing is necessary. Jwalant R. Patel, MD: Kidney disease has a wide range of symptoms and it also depends on the kind of kidney disease one can have. Most of the chronic kidney disease patient don’t look for help until there kidney function goes below 45% that’s when they start to have some symptoms. Symptoms vary and include weakness, nausea, leg swelling, decreased appetite or sleep disturbance. If you have a kidney stone you can have back pain which may radiate to the groin and sometimes you may also have blood in your urine. A vast majority of people that we see have chronic kidney disease and do not have any symptoms and just because you don’t have symptoms does not mean that you don’t have any underlying kidney problem. Local Flair: Are there preventative measures we can take to keep our kidneys at optimum health? Umesh Dalal, MD: Controlling diseases that commonly cause kidney disease like hypertension and diabetes along with avoiding medicine which can damage your kidneys such as pain relievers (Advil) and proton pump inhibitor-PPI (Omeprazole). Jwalant R. Patel, MD: A healthy lifestyle is a key to keep your

Umesh Dalal, MD: Patients can expect a discussion of the purpose of their visit with an explanation as to why they were referred to me along with a detailed discussion of kidney function, diagnosis, treatment and prevention. Jwalant R. Patel, MD: I believe that “knowledge is power” and more you know better you can help to take care of your kidneys. Most of the patients that we see in the office don’t have enough medical knowledge so I spend most of my time to simplify things for my patients so they can understand the underlying disease process. I keep my patient in the center of the discussion. Local Flair: What would you like our readers to know about St. Luke’s Nephrology Associates - Monroe? Umesh Dalal, MD: I have been a physician and resident in the Monroe County community for a long time and intend to stay in the Monroe County community in order to provide comprehensive kidney care in the office, in the hospital and if necessary in the dialysis unit. Jwalant R. Patel, MD: St. Luke’s has multiple campuses and regardless where you get your care at you still have access to the vast sources that St. Luke’s offers. Over goal is simple patient satisfaction and excellent medical care. Local Flair: What other departments within St. Luke’s help you achieve success? Umesh Dalal, MD: All departments of medical care are helpful as kidney function is an integral part of all body systems. Vascular surgery and interventional radiology are particularly helpful for our dialysis patients. Jwalant R. Patel, MD: Interventional radiology and vascular surgery are the backbone behind our success. An interventional radiologist can help us to put dialysis catheter, perform a kidney biopsy and also declot the vascular access, while a vascular surgeon can help us to create greater vascular access which would be the lifeline to our dialysis patient.

How Healthy Is Your Financial Status? with Melisa D.B. Mersini Vice President Wealth Strategies & Management LLC Stroudsburg, PA Office: 570-424-1555 wsandm.com

Creating a financial plan is not a one-step process. Do you review your financial plan in its entirety every year? If not, you should. An annual review can address changing circumstances and identify areas that are lacking in order to develop a strategy to circumvent potential problems. There are a number of key areas that are often overlooked. Cash is the foundation to financial planning. I have found this area to be the most lacking within many financial plans. Low-interest rates on savings and money market accounts can result in individuals putting aside less cash than advisable. Consequently, credit cards are used for emergency or larger purchases instead of cash, resulting in potentially far more significant concerns than a low return on cash holdings. It is important to identify funds that can be set aside every month to put into reserve. If you are paying more than the minimum on your mortgage or other loans such as credit cards, for the time being, pay the minimum and redirect the difference to cash. Once you have a cash nest egg large enough to handle unexpected costs, you can return to making overpayments. Receiving a bonus or raise in salary and allocating all or a significant portion to cash is an ideal opportunity to build savings without changing your lifestyle. If neither of these is an immediate option, take the time to review all monthly expenses to see if you can find lower-cost alternatives. Savings often can be found by reviewing bills such as insurance and phone services for better plans. Debt is a component of your financial plan. Has your debt risen or declined during the past two or three years? It is normal for debt to go up from time to time due to the purchase of a home or automobile. However, exponential increases year after year will result in debt that can grow out of control. Frequently assessing debt levels may expose problems before things get too far out of hand. Reviewing your financial plan with your advisor on an annual basis at minimum can provide a comprehensive view of all of your finances and inform you if your debt is too high. Within the context of your overall plan, you can devise a strategy each year to execute the necessary steps to lower debt and increase wealth. Do you have a will? Do you have a trust? If you answered NO and are not sure whether you need either or both, take the time to review your financial and family situation with your advisor. Estate planning is especially important in second marriages. Lack of proper planning can result in dire consequences for children of both marriages. Your advisor can identify problem areas that can be efficiently resolved, often by simple steps such as changing beneficiary designations or life insurance. Advice from an attorney is a must, particularly in complex situations. Estate planning under any circumstance is essential. It may seem to be an uncomfortable subject, but making sound decisions now is preferable to confronting adverse concerns later. Better to know than not know. Seek advice to keep finances moving in the right direction.

FAQs OF RMAPA

Q

w h at p e r c e n tag e o f couples experience i n f e rt i l i t y ?

A

Infertility affects about 10 to 15 percent of the average population ages 20-45. As women age, the likelihood of them experiencing infertility increases.

LF: We have been trying to get pregnant for a long time. When should we think about seeing a doctor to find out if we need infertility treatment? RMAPA: Infertility is normally defined as the inability to achieve pregnancy after trying on your own for at least 12 months. However, women over the age of 35 are advised to see an infertility specialist after trying on their own for 6 months. LF: I have had several miscarriages. Can you help me? RMAPA: We perform a complete evaluation, of both partners, to determine the cause of recurrent pregnancy loss. Numerous couples with this reproductive problem do have successful pregnancies. LF: Am I too old to try to conceive/get pregnant? RMAPA: As a women passes age 32, there is a slow decline in pregnancy rates. There is no date that the chances of success one day are high and the next are low. We perform blood tests and ultrasounds to help predict your ovarian reserve. However, even if you cannot produce quality eggs, but you can carry the pregnancy to term, we do have options for you. LF: Do all patients receive the same treatment for infertility? RMAPA: Most infertility cases, 85 to 90 percent are treated with conventional therapies, such as drug treatment or surgical repair of reproductive organs. The recommendation for what type of treatment may be utilized is done on a patient by patient basis. Every patient is unique, as is the care we provide to every patient. LF: I have heard that having In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is very expensive, is that the only treatment you offer for infertility? RMAPA: RMAPA offers many options for the treatment of infertility; IVF is just one of the choices available. While vital for some patients, nationwide in vitro fertilization and similar treatments account for less than 3% of infertility services. IVF and associated treatments have the highest success rate per try, but a significant number of couples are successful with less complex treatments. LF: Does infertility only affect women? RMAPA: Infertility affects men and women equally. Approximately 33% of all infertility is female related, 33% is male related, and the remaining 33% is unexplained.

LF: How long will it take before I get pregnant? RMAPA: The initial diagnostic phase normally takes 1-2 months. Usually patients can begin an appropriate treatment starting the following month. Pregnancy rates vary depending on patient age, response to treatment and individual medical conditions. Even though there are no guarantees, be assured the staff of RMAPA will offer excellent medical care/advice. LF: I am ready to make an appointment with your office. What is my next step? RMAPA: If you are ready to make an appointment with our physician, you can do so by calling the main number 610-8206888 and select option # 1. We have new patient appointments Monday through Friday during the day and evenings. When you call we will need to know your name, date of birth, address, email address, and the type of insurance you have. We will also need to know your insurance ID numbers so please have your insurance card available. In addition, we will need to know the same information for your partner. If you had any type of testing or treatment for infertility done by a physician outside of RMAPA or RMA of NJ, please arrange for these records to be sent. We will send you a packet of information that will need to be completed and returned to our office prior to your visit. You may wish to use this packet to keep your information organized as you continue on your journey with our office. In addition, we will send you an email with information on how to log onto our online learning website (e-learning) where you will be able to find out additional information regarding your first visit and our office. LF: What do I need to bring with me to my first visit? RMAPA: You will need to bring a photo ID, your insurance card and any papers that you did not return prior to your visit. Due to the new laws regarding identity theft (red flag rules) all patients need to provide a photo ID before they are seen. If you don’t have a driver’s license, bring another form of ID that has your picture and name printed on it. (Items such as work ID’s or even wholesale club ID’s like from Sam’s or BJ’s.) Don’t worry if the records from your outside doctor were not sent to our office before your first visit. Our care providers are able to see you without them but will still need them to review as soon as possible. LF: What can I expect at my first visit? RMAPA: During your initial visit in our office, most of your time will be spent in a private consultation with a care provider, where all of your questions will be answered and a personalized plan of care will be discussed. You may also receive an ultrasound or have blood drawn to begin the testing process. You will have the opportunity to speak with our financial counselor who will review pertinent information regarding your insurance benefits and possible costs associated with treatment. In addition, you will also speak with a clinical team member who will be your point of contact within our office and the person who will guide you through the different aspects of your care.
