6 What a year! I have to say I am looking forward

to 2011 more than I have ever looked forward to a new year. 2010 has been so full of ups and downs and highs and lows, I sometimes didn’t know which direction we were going, and I am sure that a lot of people have felt the same way. We did a lot of great things in 2010; we celebrated our 2nd Pocono Mountains Restaurant Week and tripled our participation. We welcomed 28 new businesses in to the Local Flair community and we launched a new website, mobile site & mobile application. But no matter how many great things or not so great things that have happened throughout the year, I find myself being most grateful for the simplest things. Our designer Kelly, got engaged and Amanda, our Marketing Coordinator is having a baby. My children are healthy and my husband loves me. The moments that cannot be measured in dollars and cents seem to be the force behind why we can remain happy in turbulent times. I realize that many people throughout our small community are struggling to feed their children or even heat their homes this year and so our holiday pages are full of simple, meaningful ways that we can all band together to help those in need this season. Your small gestures combined with others' gestures, begin to equal something larger. So this season when you're eating, drinking and being merry- don’t forget to share your good tidings. Wishing you all comfort, joy and peace throughout the holiday season.

GIVE! ®

'tis the

Season The “miracle” of Christmas is repeated over and over again through the joy of caring and sharing. The traditional red kettle is an integral part of the Christmas scene, with millions of dollars donated each year to aid needy families, seniors, and the homeless, in keeping with the spirit of the season. Donations provide Christmas dinners, clothing, and toys for families in need. Financial assistance also helps with basic necessities, along with seasonal aid. Families of prisoners often are included. Volunteers distribute gifts to shut-ins in hospitals and nursing homes, and shelters are open for sit-down dinners. The Salvation Army endeavors to bring spiritual light and love to those it serves at Christmas so that the real meaning of the season is not forgotten. Many families receive aid over a period of months after the Christmas season as well, people struggling with difficult family, emotional, or employment problems please visit www.salvationarmy.org • 285 Washington Street, East Stroudsburg • 570.421.5711

How many times from October to December do you hear the words “ I Want ______ for Christmas this year “ from your children? Imagine if “Santa” could not provide any of those wants. As our local economy struggles to right itself our community is hurrying now more than ever. It is true that many families are in dire need of the basics, but think about the joy one present could bring to a child that would otherwise receive nothing this Christmas. Pocono Manor is hosting their 2nd Annual Magical Fireside Christmas and taking donations for Toys for Tots. John Dickson, Director of the Monroe County Toys for Tots says, "Every time you read about people losing their jobs their children become my job. I need to provide for them. Toys for Tots is significantly down in donations but more are in need this year." So, while you’re there, enjoy a horse drawn carriage ride, visit with Santa and make crafts with your kids but don’t forget your toy for donation to Toys for Tots. If you need more information on how to support our Monroe County Toys for Tots or to find a drop off location closest to you visit www.toysfortots.org/monroe.

When stores like Barneys, Nieman Marcus and The Tiny Jewel Box in Washington D.C. are clamoring for your wares, you know you’ve made it as an artist. Willy and Ann Francois have been handcrafting decoupage works of art for over 25 years. Their work is owned by both US and foreign presidents as well as some celebrities. So what is the secret? What makes this couple's work so collectible? After a quick tour of their Stroudsburg studio I can honestly say it is the love of what they do and the serious nature by which they approach their art. Their standards are high and that is why their products become timeless heirlooms. Every detail is thought out and every inch is an homage to the level of quality, beauty and craftsmanship in which they believe. Willy was born in France where love and appreciation for beautiful things is a part of the culture. He holds a diploma from the renowned Parisian art school, Ecole Boulle. Boulle, the master furniture maker, created the school as a place of study for all the arts while emphasizing home decor. Ann Sheps Francois graduated from Rutgers University with a Masters in Photography and its relevance to Art Therapy. Willy and Ann met in New Mexico in 1982 and they have been together in art and in life ever since. It was after their move to the Big Apple that Ann and Willy discovered their calling. Ann was working for an Italian art magazine that was around the corner of a renown New York City antique store. Ann had showed them a decoupage box and they put it in their window and sold it instantly. The store owner then commissioned plates and then proceeded to buy everything the couple could make, and their business was born. It was time to grow, so Willy decided to approach the famous shopping mecca Barneys NYC. The store has helped launch the careers of countless designers and artists, the Francois’ are amongst the ranks. Willy stopped in one day to try and set up an appointment with a buyer and was told no one was available, but he could call in an hour. He went across the street and waited at a pay phone and called exactly when the hour was up... it turned out the owner had bought a piece of the Francois’ decoupage at the antique store and had actually been looking for the couple. Barneys New York played an integral role in helping the Francois’ develop a collection. Ann and Willy applied their new knowledge of the business of art and developed collections for other stores throughout the country. From a paperweight to a full vanity, every item is created with ‘grace and beauty in a classical historical style.’ Nothing goes unnoticed in the Francois’ work and it has taken them countless years to find the perfect combination of style and craftsmanship. The couple continues to create new collections for major retailers and also specializes in custom work. Willy and Ann Francois are masters of the exacting art of decoupage and their work will be on display this holiday season at The Apple Tree in Downtown Stroudsburg. If you are looking for something truly unique and one-of-a-kind, you must stop in. n To view Ann and Willy Francois’ work go to www.willanfinc.com or phone their studio @ 570.992.9216. The Apple Tree will display the items through December at their store @ 726 Main Street in Downtown Stroudsburg or phone 570.421.2798 for more information.

carat clarity color & customer service

“For any new business, the most important thing is to do your research. To know who your clients are. Know your product, know your competitors and to do whatever you can to make that customer happy. THEY are the reason why you’re there. And also, NEVER expect to make money right away. I like to call it tuition… You need to pay your tuition first,” says James Diamond, 30-year owner of James Diamond National Jewelers Manufacturing Inc. located in Mt. Pocono. Operating since 1983, it’s safe to say that Mr. Diamond’s philosophies should be remembered. His success has far outgrown even his own expectations and in celebrating his 30-year anniversary, he couldn’t be happier. His story is incredible - beginning in 1965 while working as a lowly apprentice in the heart of New York’s infamous Jewelry Exchange. While sweeping floors and running errands, he was noticed and taken under the wing of a lonely Holocaust Survivor in need of a hungry mind. Diamond took to his teacher and to the dying art of jewelry restoration instantly - learning the trade, learning the business and always appreciating the Art behind the work. According to James, he owes all of his success to his teachers - to those he looked up to and who taught him to question his abilities. “One time, I was practicing writing lines in school, my teacher walked over to me and looked over my work, ‘You have a good eye,’ she said. And amazingly, that one little bit of inspiration, has followed me my whole life.” For years, Diamond created his own line of finely crafted jewelry and traveled to art shows in order to make a living. Finally, in 1980, James came to the Poconos and set up shop at Camelback as a mobile retailer. He fell in love with the area and realized that this is where he belonged. Diamond purchased the same space that he still operates in, and for 30 years has been successfully operating, as one of the oldest and largest jewelers in the Poconos. James Diamond National Jewelers specializes in everything that glitters and shines. At James Diamond, fixing old jewelry is not only convenient, it’s done right in front of you! Their all glass repair area allows the client to see their jewelry and feel completely at ease watching their prized possessions get repaired. Their oneof-a-kind Estate collection, curated by Mr. Diamond himself since 1985, is an unusual collection of antique and ‘pre-loved’ jewelry that is perfect for the timeless gifts that last a lifetime. As an artist, Diamond prides himself (and his success) on his ability to sit down

and design custom pieces. Face to face, with his customers is what it’s all about. “The feeling you get when you make someone a piece of jewelry that they helped to create is incredible. To see their faces, that’s why I do this. Making a unique piece of jewelry and giving the customer the credit of designing that for their loved one is the whole point. We’re making heirlooms that last forever.” Recently, the latest trend in money-making has been buying and selling Gold. For Diamond, this has been the tradition for over 15 years. The buying of Gold and other precious metals is the secret behind the wholesale prices found at James Diamond National. As he puts it, “The current price of Gold is higher than ever and at my store, we’ve been buying for so long that we purchased most of our inventory when Gold was selling at half of what it is now. We’re selling our jewelry based on that half price purchase value which is comparable with wholesale prices. You can’t beat that.”

"Making a unique piece of jewelry and giving the customer the credit of designing that for their loved one is the whole point. We’re making heirlooms that last forever.”

So what’s next for the wise entrepreneur and his family-owned business of 30 years? “Well, we’ve been talking about the “R” word (retirement), but I’m having trouble seeing it. After 30 years, I’m just not ready yet. When I stop loving what I do every day, I’ll stop. But as long as God gives me the strength to keep going and I have happy customers, I just wanna keep doing it.” So when you’re shopping for that special someone this Holiday season, or just feel like spoiling yourself with something beautiful, put James Diamond Jewelers on your list and know that you’re in good hands. Offering the MOST comparable prices and the largest selection of jewelry in-house, well, you can’t beat that. n For more information visit www.moneyforgold.com or stop by their Mt. Wellness

Revolutionize Your New Year’s Resolutions By: Beth M. Taylor, Director, Wellness Institute at Pocono Medical Center

New Year New Beginnings Each year, we have the unique opportunity to dust ourselves off and celebrate a new opportunity for finally making real, positive changes in our lives. Whether resolving to lose those testy ten pounds or save an extra ten bucks, we go forward with the best of intentions into the great promise of the New Year—but not before maxing out our ruts of the “Old Year.” Over the holidays, we often overeat, overspend, and over-procrastinate ourselves on a “special pass,” excusing our bad behaviors on the false pretense that January 1 will provide a proverbial “reset” button on our lives. It can be said that most individuals have unrealistic expectations and thus set unattainable goals. Common resolutions are to lose weight, to quit smoking and to save more money and spend less. Nearly one month into the New Year, however, most people break their resolutions because they have not considered the actual behavior change that must occur when changing habits. The Stages of Change Theory by Prochaska, Norcross and DiClemente is a useful model to apply to making and keeping resolutions. There are six stages to the theory (precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance and termination). Each stage is described with an associated time frame. For example, precontemplation is the phase in which individuals are not willing to change their behavior in the next six months and contemplation is the phase in which individuals are considering change in the next six

32

Local Flair

months. It has been documented that most people are not prepared for action-oriented health promotion programs and, as a result, are doomed to fail if they set their goals around action items (such as those previously listed). A more appropriate way to design resolutions is to perform an individual needs assessment. First, take a look at your environment. If you want to quit smoking, think about whether you are able to quit given your current environment. If your spouse is a smoker, consider if you will be supported in your goal or if you will slip back into the behavior because you are still exposed to smoking. Second, think about your readiness to change. If you enjoy eating out often, consider if you will be able to cut back on that in exchange for preparing healthy meals at home or if you are willing to pack your lunch in order to monitor your portion control. Finally, think about the change in terms of a marathon, not a sprint. If you desire to save money, start with reasonable actions that are easy to implement. Create a realistic budget and stick to it for a set amount of time. For example, review your cable bill or phone plan and research the options for a cheaper plan that still provides the core services you desire. If that works, then look to something else you can modify to save even more cash. Make your resolution to be smarter in 2011 and work on bite-sized, defined ways to change, not entire behaviors. You will feel great energy and a sense of accomplishment by attaining smaller goals one step at a time. n

Monroe County Habitat For Humanity By: Amanda Kuhn

Everyone deserves a home for the holidays - a warm, safe place to create those holiday memories that warm your heart all season long. While it may be difficult for Santa to fit a new home in his sleigh or under your tree, one local charity manages to deliver this Christmas miracle to families in need every year. The Monroe County Habitat for Humanity, a financially independent affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, is a volunteer-based, non-profit organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness in our community. The housing wage is $17.56 per hour which is the wage needed to afford the rent of a two bedroom apartment. The minimum wage in Monroe County is $7.25, therefore the ability to afford a apartment or home is very difficult for many in our community. This year, two important items top the Monroe County Habitat for Humanity’s wish list – volunteers and donations. Volunteers are the livelihood of this organization and they are responsible for changing the lives of countless families. You too can change a life by devoting your time and energy to this worthy cause. If working on a construction site is not for you, you can still help. The Habitat for Humanity needs volunteers of every capability and talent from public relations and family selection to

faith relations and event coordination. To sign up, visit the Monroe County Habitat for Humanity’s website where you will find more information and all necessary forms. If time is something you’re lacking, especially during this time of year, there are still other ways you can contribute. Below is a list of items that the organization needs in order to continue their work in our community. You can add one of these items to your holiday shopping list or simply find a few of them lying around your garage. The Monroe County Habitat for Humanity accepts new supplies or gently used supplies in good working condition. Simply call the office at 570.476.9846 and inform them of the material and/or supplies you would like to donate. Everyone deserves a happy holiday season. Imagine how much merrier yours will be knowing you’ve helped a neighbor in need. n For more information on the Monroe County Habitat for Humanity, volunteering, donating and partnering visit www.habitatmc.org or contact them at Monroe County Habitat for Humanity, Inc. 912 Main Street, P.O.
