construction. One summer he worked for the previous owner of the Stone Bar on a renovation and was to keep the original doors, which are now in my possession. I have been plotting the perfect place to put them for the past ten years. I have skied, mountain-biked and hiked on every trail around and even though I am much more tame these days, I still love to be outside and I am still regularly amazed by the Pocono landscape. I can get anywhere in the area by using back roads only. I grew up when it when the Poconos were still considered “the country,” when the Raymour & Flanigan was Jamesway ( the parking lot where friends and I used to do donuts when it snowed ), and a single, blinking yellow light in Bartonsville was the only traffic signal from Tannersville to The Stroud Mall. 35 years certainly brings a lot of change; more people, more traffic, more commercialism, less open space, less service and so on. Some of the change is good, some not so good, but the truth is, The Poconos will always be a great destination for so many reasons. As I sat with the owner of The Casino Theatre in Mount Pocono ( pg. 26 ) to chat with her about how she is transforming her families’ 30 year old business, I went down my own personal memory lane of vanilla shakes and miniature golf on warm, Pocono summer nights spent with friends and family. I realized that is what

we are and what we will continue to be; a truly unique, perhaps kitchsy - but definitely cool place, where families can come and enjoy the country. Skiing, hiking, biking, fishing, eating, shopping, Nascar and water slides are only two hours away from the most densely populated areas in the country. So what does all of this mean? I guess nothing, except I am proud to call the Pocono Mountains my home and I feel privileged to get to know the people who shape our area and contribute to the future of the Pocono Mountains. So as I was thinking about our February Issue of Local Flair, I really wanted to try and define what there is to love about the Poconos. We did our best, but we know there is so much more to talk about. Please join us on Facebook @ www.facebook.com/ localflair and tell us what you love about the Pocono Mountains throughout the seasons. n

For the Pocono Health System, this spring… “Everything is Coming Up Roses.” After a three-year hiatus, The Arts & Antiques Auction, historically one of the most unique Pocono events, has been resurrected and all of the proceeds from the event will benefit the new Dale & Frances Hughes Cancer Center. Cocktails will begin at 6:00 p.m. and the auction will start after dinner, so all art lovers, mark your calendars, this i one event you will not want to miss! The Apple Tree: You're the Guest, Not the Customer By: Paula Damiano

Mountain Springs Resort. The Valentine Tea tradition features complimentary makeovers by Madison Avenue makeup artist Kimara Ahnert. You can schedule a makeover by email (TheAppleTree@verizon.net) or by phone (570-421-2798). Stop by, enjoy a cuppa, and check out all the beautiful clothes. “It's more about an attitude than an age.”

Now in its 30th year of business, The Apple Tree (Main Street, Stroudsburg) carries a sophisticated array of fine women’s clothing and accessories. Founder, Sharon Sinkevich and her sister Lisa Sinkevich-Berry believe that fashion is “more about an attitude than an age.” Established fashion designers including Eileen Fisher, Nicole Miller, and Joseph Ribkoff are artfully displayed in the newly remodeled boutique, along with newer additions like Not Your Daughter’s Jeans and Spanx. The store’s downtown location draws many visitors. But the true marketing genius of The Apple Tree is all about building relationships. Sharon stresses that ladies who walk through the boutique’s doors are guests, not customers. And many of these guests have been shopping at The Apple Tree since the beginning. Now their daughters and granddaughters also shop here. Three generations of buyers can’t be wrong! The shop hosts a number of special events throughout the year, including several trunk shows, fashion shows and Meet the Designer events. The most well-attended happening is the annual Valentine Tea. This year’s tea will be held on Saturday, February 12th from 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM. The fine china and sterling silver serving pieces will come out, along with tiny sandwiches, petit fours, scones and other teatime favorites by Robin Rader of The Lodge at

Fisher, cotton sweaters from BKG, and novelty tops and jackets by Andria Lieu. For the trendy shopper, look for chic, hip tops by Bailey 44, signature t-shirts by Michael Stars and must-haves from Joe’s Jeans. “We want our ladies to feel good about themselves in the heart of winter by offering them the opportunity to shop like a star,” says Sharon. Shopping is a special treat all year long at The Apple Tree. Personalized service includes maintaining a profile on each guest, listing her sizes and preferences (hates wool, loves pastels) so that staff members can instantly guide ladies to items of particular interest. “We help guests put together outfits that emphasize their assets,” says Sharon, who thinks clothes shopping should be a tactile experience. “We dress our ladies for their lifestyles,” she explains, mentioning a Linda Richards silk-and-fur reversible jacket that sold well this year – “Perfect for extended trips!” She and sister Lisa look for the best fashion items that are unique in design, well priced and well made. Apple Tree guests come from all around the country. “We’re a destination store,” Sharon says proudly. Women from Long Island, Philadelphia and West Chester regularly make appointments to stop by when they’re in the area. Shopping by phone is another option. Men can also take advantage of this personalized service. “We’ll help him find something for his lady, we’ll wrap it and pack it, we’ll even deliver if necessary.” So don’t be intimidated, gentlemen! Accessories are another big part of the shop’s inventory. Shoes, scarves and belts are displayed with designer clothes to complete the outfit. A special jewelry section offers designer jewelry and also copies of fine pieces. Sharon calls these items “travel jewelry” – all the bling and none of the security risk. The Apple Tree is an active supporter of local causes. Sharon is co-chair of this year’s Gala for Women’s Resources, to be held on May 20th at Skytop. The Apple Tree is also a drop-off point for items for the Echo Thrift Boutique on Ann Street, which benefits Women’s Resources, the charity that services abused women and families in Monroe County. So shop local and shop often. The Apple Tree offers New York fashion combined with Pocono charm and personal service. n Don’t you deserve to treat yourself today? The Stonehedge Gallery: An Eclectic Mix By: Paula Damiano

the stonehedge gallery

The Stonehedge Gallery, located in the friendly community of Barrrett Township, is a wonderful place to explore. Seasonal displays outside the store are always a delight. Inside, handcrafted contemporary jewelry shares space with Victorian furniture and antique accessories. Wandering from room to room is like a treasure hunt – what will you find next? Owners Athena Macy-Meier and her husband Michael Meier have been in business at this location since last August. Athena grew up in nearby Paradise Township, and she and Michael both love the Pocono area. Jewelry has been Athena’s passion since childhood. She starting making jewelry at age 14 – and by age 16, had her own sales rep. Now she works mainly in sterling silver and semiprecious stones. “She’s amazing,” says Michael with obvious pride. The couple has been together 12 years. Athena’s jewelry inspirations often come from the materials themselves. She frequently creates in groups of items – like her Ice Collection that features cracked quartz. A string of chunky, oblong beads attracted this reporter’s eye, looking like orbs of fractured ice frozen in time. Another collection included colorful hand-blown glass beads. The Gold Fusion group is made of sterling silver with 14K gold fused to it as an accent, allowing for a rich twotone look of both gold and silver. Craftsmanship is very import to Athena, and her pieces include finished backs and other high-end techniques. The gallery’s antiques are an outgrowth of a lifetime of collecting by the pair. Michael is particularly drawn to estate sales of important people, like Congressman Neil Gallagher (who took on the FBI and Hoover), where quality is high and condition is excellent. Recent finds included a floor-to-ceiling Austrian cupboard made of chestnut, with beautiful inlays and original glass. Two walnut side chairs from the estate of Gurdon Wallace Wattles (Omaha business leader and Hollywood VIP) were already marked “Sold” the day Local Flair visited. The store also includes a large selection of smaller antique accessories, like Early American Pattern Glass and European porcelain. Paintings are mostly originals – not prints. Michael aims for “home ready” pieces that don’t require repairs or refinishing. And the store is immaculately clean – something you don’t always find with vintage furniture sellers. But it’s all about the jewelry for

14

Local Flair

Athena and Michael. “We don’t call ourselves an antique shop,” she says firmly, “we are a gallery.” Michael points out that their jewelry prices are very reasonable, since you’re buying direct. No middleman equals a break for the customer. The store carries a few pieces for men like rings and bracelets. But most of Athena’s work is designed for women. “I’m pretty girlie,” she confesses. Earrings in sterling start at $10.00, with rings as low as $6.00. At the other end of the scale, a complex brooch with lemon topaz was priced at $375.00. Custom pieces are also available. Athena

“We don’t call ourselves an antique shop, we are a gallery.” does a lot of work for brides and bridesmaids. Blue topaz is popular with those buyers. Other natural stones she works with include black onyx, amethyst, peridot and sea sediment jasper. For Valentine’s Day, look for hearts made with garnets and pearls. A few items come from other sources. Athena works closely with a jewelry maker in India, supervising both the design and manufacture of these pieces. A friend of theirs also supplies unique pendants and brooches that incorporate antique postage stamps and cigarette cards. Athena and Michael are big supporters of their community. For last summer’s Tipsy Tennis fundraiser for the Barrett Paradise Friendly Library, she created a multi-strand necklace and matching earrings of smoky quartz. At auction, the set sold for far more than its retail price. Athena and Michael were touched that their contribution fared so well for this worthy cause. n Hours for the shop vary with the season, so you may want to call first: 570.595.2560. But any time you feel adventurous, head on over to The Stonehedge Gallery on Route 390/191 South in Cresco, PA. You’ll have fun browsing through the eclectic collection of jewelry and antiques. You’re sure to find something you just have to own!

Tunes

Jim Roberti Band By: Erin Farley Photo by: Stephen Lippay

Whether you’re in the mood to dance, drink, or straight up just listen to some good tunes, there is one rockin’ trio of men who will surely play the perfect sets of music for your high-quality fun. Jim Roberti, Paul Cipriano, and Gary Wehrkamp make up the locally famous “Jim Roberti Band.” Their start began as a solo one, with Roberti heading up a lucrative singing career up and down the East coast. From there, drummer Paul Cipriano met and then began playing gigs with Roberti and the two were dubbed, “Jim Roberti Duo.” The talented guys soon met up with another wellaccomplished guitarist, keyboardist, drummer and singer/ producer Gary Wehrkamp. Currently, the “Jim Roberti Trio” or “Jim Roberti Band” is, undoubtedly, one of the best musical groups in the Poconos. The band enjoys playing locally, mostly for the convenience and friendships they have cultivated. Roberti said in a recent interview, “I get to see a lot of the same people on a monthly or even weekly basis. We become friends and that is a good thing.” The local commute is also nice for all three members, who have families and friends in the area both inside and out of their musical world. When the band plays further distances, they tend to have different sets of friends wherever they go. Roberti enjoys the variety, as he says, “We get that great energy playing to a local friendly bar crowd one night in PA and then a NYC fundraiser the next night, where nobody has ever heard us. Playing a new crowd always gives us the confidence to move forward, which is so important.” The personalities of the band members contribute to the considerable likability of this artistic trio. Their ability to improvise and joke around with each other on stage is both appealing and comforting. The trio are remarkably professional, yet they have so much fun, it almost doesn’t

16

seem like work. Roberti explains, “We are all so comfortable with our instruments that the playing itself almost takes a back seat to how much we can make each other laugh. We have moments where we try to have depth and seriousness in our sets but many more where we go for shocking the crowd musically and trying to entertain them on a level that is not just about music.” The variety of musical influences certainly also prove why the Jim Roberti Band is well-loved by a diverse audience. Jim credits his family, “My Dad always listened to music when I was growing up. I got that passion for listening to music from him, which I still carry to this day. He and my Mom always encouraged me to play and practice music even when it was noisy and probably not so good!” Jim finds inspiration in bands and musicians who inspired him to write and think about how far a song can be taken. He credits the Beatles as a first and ongoing inspiration, but also adds RUSH, The Police, Phish, Elvis Costello, Simon & Garfunkel, The Flaming Lips, Radiohead, Belle and Sebastian, Ben Folds Five, The Smiths, Pink Floyd, Ween, Cake, Beck, Bare Naked Ladies, and so many more to the list, like any true music lover. The band customizes sets for certain gigs by playing covers of popular songs, as well as the random birthday, graduation, and congratulatory “shout-outs.” Their level of dedication matched with their ability to appease the crowd is a winning musical combo you simply must check out. n Fans and friends can visit www.JimRoberti.com to read more, including information about schedules, how to buy CDs, how to book the band, info about members of the band, photos, lyrics, free downloads and more.

Skin Art, Pocono Style By: Paula Damiano

Funhouse Tattooing 18

Local Flair

Tattooing – the aboriginal body adornment observed by Captain Cook’s crew in 1769 – was recently deemed “fully protected by the 1st Amendment,” according to a federal appeals court. Once strictly an underground activity, there are now more than 15,000 tattoo studios in the United States. Two outstanding Pocono practitioners are Mike Ruocco of Funhouse Tattooing in Tannersville (Peddler’s Village) and Myke Maldanado of Dreamland Creations (Main Street, Stroudsburg). Two artists, two very different approaches to this ancient art. Mike Ruocco is a self-taught tattooist. Unable to find an apprenticeship, he read everything he could get his hands on. He also attended trade shows and watched other tattoo artists. Finally his best friend “hounded me to do it” – and Mike made the jump from observer to practitioner. But that’s just the mechanics, says Mike. From age 12, he was fascinated by tattoos. He would sketch rock stars’ tats and draw his own original designs. His interest in art landed him early jobs with an airbrushing operation – and with Tiffany & Co., where he learned to respect Old World craftsmen and their mastery of the tools. Myke Maldanado also had an early interest in drawing. An alumnus of Manhattan’s High School of Art & Design, he was originally a commercial artist in the world of comics. His career took off in 1990 when he illustrated the graphic novel Flesh Wounds for Heavy Metal Magazine. Later, he apprenticed with tattoo artist Darren Rosa of Rising Star in New York City. He says he switched industries for the human interaction: “Comic illustration was just too lonely.”: Mike and Myke both draw inspiration from artists in other mediums. Ruocco, whose tattoo specialty is fine line/best line work, loves M.C. Escher – especially his unique perspectives, like “Hand with Reflecting Sphere.” Maldanado loves the fantasy work of Frazetta (he recently tattooed Frazetta’s granddaughter) – and, more recently, the words of Monty Python. Myke reports that ever since actress Megan Fox started getting phrases tattooed on herself, there’s been a huge increase in people wanting everything from poetry to Bible verses. Local Flair asked each artist about getting their own first tattoos. For Ruocco, it was a Navajo symbol on his ankle to commemorate the passing of a friend. The first time Maldanado got ink applied to his skin, it was accidental. “I was using a Rapidograph (mechanical drafting machine) and zapped myself with it.” He left the skin-deep ink spot on his arm, and later incorporated it into a much larger, complex design. He hid his first real tattoos from his parents – until he got one on his neck. “Then I became like an ambassador of the tat world.” Why do people get tattoos? The standard reasons are romance and remembrance. Both tattoo artists are committed to doing custom work. Ruocco

Dreamland

says, “Everything I do is designed for one person.” He loves first meetings: “I sit with them and make the connection. The design part is my favorite.” Maldanado is also devoted to the concept of original work. His New York accent gets particularly thick when he mocks “guys who do a couple of shamrocks on a college girl and think they’re artists.” Ruocco’s business approach at Funhouse was to create a “family feel… a cheerful retail store.” The space is large and filled with natural light. At the same location for over 10 years, Mike has expanded into the adjoining space and his staff now includes two other tattoo artists (Josh Bodwell and Mike Hendra), plus an apprentice (Jessie Smith). It was always Mike’s dream to have his own studio. He says, “I still can’t believe it came to be!” He thinks the tattoo business is recession-proof, and says people are spending their money closer to home these days. The Poconos also bring many honeymooners to his door. Mike’s wedding present to his own wife Nichole was a half-sleeve tattoo of beautiful blossoms. On the corporate roster, Nichole is listed as Upper Management. “She takes care of the business end, which allows me to create,” Mike explains. The atmosphere swivels a full 180 degrees at Maldanado’s Dreamland Creations. Heavy metal music vibrates the walls of this small, dark, intimate space. Paintings from a local artists’ show adorned the walls when this reporter visited. Myke is well connected to the Pocono art scene, and hosts frequent gatherings and displays. In 2011, he’s scheduled a show every two months. The Main Street location sometimes inspires impulse buyers. “Walk-ins are always welcome,” Myke says. But he would rather “sit down with you and create something as unique as you are.” Myke has done hundreds of tattoo conventions and won numerous awards. He does a lot of portraits and art reproductions. He says he’s fairly selective about his tattoo work now, and is spending more time on his paintings and digital projects. Two other tattoo artists (Sherley and Rendi) fill out the roster at Dreamland. Myke sometimes creates the design while another artist makes it happen – like a recent caricature of Freda Kahlo that he drew and Sherley executed. “I’m more of an art director these days,” Myke says. Ruocco and Maldanado both make heavy use of Facebook to keep in touch with customers and post their current work. They also upload new designs they create – and then book appointments to turn the new work into living, breathing skin art. n

Don’t Ask Why Why do I care? If your day is bad Why do I care? If you are sad You don’t need to ask Just know that I do With each passing day I’m more in love with you For you are the reason This smile is on my face As I start each day In your loving embrace

Through heartaches, hardships and many financial struggles Patricia Grego started writing her feelings on paper and before she knew it her poetry was born. Mark Reinhardt: Sand Spring Modern By: Ali Schratt

From left to right • Miichelle Dones, Mark Reinhardt, Nate Scheuerman

Mark Reinhardt's journey with food began in 1984 after attending Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, where he discovered he had a strong urge to become a chef. The now Executive Chef and Owner of the new Sand Spring Restaurant in Cresco, set his sights on attending The Culinary Institute of America. His first experience in the industry came while working in the pantry at Skytop Lodge. Reinhardt left Skytop to gain more experience and accepted a job at Fiorentino’s Ristorante in Bartonsville (now known as Studebaker’s), as a line cook. He graduated from The Culinary Institute of America in 1987 and took his first job as a Sous Chef at The Kings Contrivance, a French restaurant in Columbia, Maryland. Reinhardt then became head chef at Souvenirs, a modern American restaurant in Bel Air, Maryland. In 1990, after the birth of his daughter Lauren, Mark and his wife Sue decided to move back to The Poconos and help with the family manufacturing business, J.A. Reinhardt & Co., in Cresco. During his 19 year career at J.A. Reinhardt & Co., Mark always had his eye on his true passion, which is cooking. The business was sold in the middle of 2009 and that is when Mark and Sue bought Sand Spring, formerly The Homestead Inn. “Ten years ago Sue gave me Thomas Keller’s book The French Laundry Cookbook for Christmas and it really motivated me to start moving back toward the restaurant business,” Reinhardt said, “I remember being home from work one day to eat lunch and I was reading The French Laundry Cookbook and I actually began tearing up a bit while reading about Mr. Keller’s relationships with his vendors. He was essentially describing in his book what I had a passion for and had left behind years prior. It really hit me that day and I have never forgotten it.” Reinhardt is also influenced by Nancy Oakes (owner and Chef of Boulevard), Tom Collichio and Anthony Bourdain ( strictly for his attitude ). Sand Spring is a compilation of Mark, Sue & Lauren’s favorite restaurants. “The biggest influence is a restaurant in San Francisco called Boulevard. Sue, Lauren and I stumbled upon Boulevard back in the late 90’s while on a trip to the city.” Reinhardt recalls, “We fell in love with the beautiful décor, the intricate but approachable food along with the buzz and life of

24

Local Flair

the place, that is what we have tried to create at Sand Spring.” His food philosophy is simple, “it’s all about the quality of the ingredients that you use, Reinhardt explains, “we buy the best ingredients available and let them shine, don’t try to do crazy things to something that is already excellent.” Reinhardt also makes a strong, supporting cast of homemade stocks. Made-fromscratch veal and chicken stock can be found everyday at Sand Spring. Reinhardt simply believes that, “without honest stocks, sauces and soups the integrity of any ingredient suffers.” The farm to table philosophy is apparent on every plate restaurant serves. The most interesting part of the menu, in my opinion, is

“we buy the best ingredients available and let them shine, don’t try to do crazy things to something that is already excellent.” that the entrée accompaniments are not the traditional, “starch and vegetable-of-the-day," but rather each entrée is thought of and paired with the perfect side dish. How do you choose between the “Cider Brined Yorkshire Pork Loin Chop bacon and pomegranate relish, shaved brussels sprouts and cider jus,” or the “Jamison Farm Lamb Porterhouse stuffed with broccoli rabe and melted garlic, mushroom risotto?” I don’t know, and it took me a long time to decide, but once I did, I was happy with the choice. Reinhardts’ favorite ingredient is Foie Gras and he admits to almost overdosing on the delicacy with his brother Bob while they were in Paris years ago. So, if you are feeling a little experimental, foie-gras is on the menu at Sand Spring, in two forms, the most interesting is the “Foie Gras Duck Dog.” Sand Spring is open Wednesday- Saturday from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. and Sundays from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sand Spring will be open Monday February 14th for Valentine’s Day, so what are you waiting for? n Go to www.SandSpringDining.com for more information or phone 570.595.3015 to make a reservation.

dinner and

a movie

When I was in junior high and someone said, “we’re going to the Casino,” visions of ice cream sundaes, movies and miniature golf instantly came to mind. Of course, I am talking about The Casino Movie Theatre in Mount Pocono - and believe me when I tell you, they were around way before Mount Airy transformed itself into the gambling mecca of the Pocono Mountains. This ‘oldfashioned family fun center,’ has been around since 1922 when it opened and operated as a dance hall. It seems hard to believe that the entrance fee in the 1930’s was 25 cents! Time has changed so many things, including the original Casino in Mount Pocono. The building has had many transformations over its 89+ years, but the most dramatic happened when the Litz, Hildebrand & Genco families partnered to purchase the business in 1975 with hopes of creating a more modern version of the Pocono landmark. They added a Malt Shoppe to the structure and officially reopened on April 4, 1975 with a showing of Gone With the Wind in the original 426- seat movie theater. Less than a year after reopening, disaster struck when a fire burned the Casino Theatre and the neighboring businesses to the ground. The partners decided to rebuild. Although much smaller but more focused, the new Casino Theatre and Village Malt Shoppe opened its doors just four months after the fire on July 4th, 1976. The Litz Family eventually bought out the other partners and the second generation, Karen Litz Struckle and husband Donald Struckle SR., now operate the business. As I sit and drink my root beer float and talk with Karen, I cannot help but wander down memory lane. I spent so many summer nights at The Casino eating Ice Cream, playing miniature golf and giggling with friends -while probably staring at boys. As I look around, I realize not much has changed, except the fact that it is February and the Casino Theatre I remembered was never open in the winter. I am sure that anyone who has grown up in the Pocono Mountains can agree the area has changed much in the past 30 years, but the one thing that still remains and has always been an important part of our legacy is the fact that we have always offered vacationing families a quality, affordable and unique experience. I love the fact that I can still feel a piece of my childhood as I sit and talk with Karen, who tells me that the one and only prerequisite to getting and maintaining a job at The Casino is, “employees be nice to our customers. We are all about service here and how can you provide the best service if you cannot even be nice?” I agree. Since Karen and Donald took over the business in 2007, they have implemented a lot of changes to the day-to-day operations. The most obvious change is that the Casino Theatre is now open year round. The Struckles’ hired a chef and they now serve fresh, quality food for lunch and dinner. You can even have “Dinner and A Movie,” and it costs only $10.00 per person on Monday nights (Valentine’s Day is on a Monday this year people ---- hint, hint). With a menu boasting favorites such as wraps, paninis, and EXCELLENT burgers - all cooked to order, and two movie theaters showing new releases, ICE CREAM, arcade games and mini golf in the summer, what more could a family looking for some affordable fun ask for? Well, since you asked, this February The Casino Theatre has something a little extra-special planned, with the whole family in mind of course. So, on February 12th & 13th the Casino Theatre is having its first “Chocolate Lovers Weekend.” Families are invited to come and make their own sundaes, enjoy a chocolate fountain, homemade biscotti, scones and fudge and hand-dipped chocolate treats. So if you’re like me and you’re looking for something the whole family can do to celebrate Valentine’s Day, you just found the answer. n For more information call the Casino Theatre at 570.839.7831 or visit www.casinotheatre.net

Love Nest: Rinehimer Construction By: Ali Schratt Photos By: Stephen Lippay

“Monroe County, Pa., in the heart of the Pocono Mountains, saw a 3% decline in total home sale transactions, but its Lake Naomi resort community was up nearly 15%"

Have you ever imagined living on a beautiful lake, hiking and fishing with 5 star amenities right outside you door? Lake Naomi in Pocono Pines could be the place you have been dreaming of. We caught up with Rinehimer Construction and Ed and Barb Ogden who graciously welcomed Local Flair into their perfect Lake Naomi love-nest. Ed and Barb Ogden consider themselves “reformed sailors.” Because their hobby was getting to be entirely too much work for them, but they still wanted to be on the water they started looking for a vacation home on a lake. The Pocono Mountains was not on the couples’ radar, but after seeing an ad on-line, The Ogdens’ decided to take a drive. Ten years ago they bought the modest and stylish lakefront retreat, which is less than a two-hour drive from their primary residence just outside of Reading. The home can sleep 10 comfortably and with amenities like a state-of-the-art fitness center, 18- hole Golf Course and private club with award winning cuisine literally right outside their door, it has become a gathering place for friends and family. Barb sees her sister ( who lives in Ohio ) more now, because everyone enjoys coming to the Ogden’s second home so much. According to the NAR ( National Association of Realtors ), “one in 10 real-estate transactions in 2009 was for the purchase of a vacation home. And though a small fraction of the overall market, it is significant because vacation homes are often bigticket properties and attract discretionary buyers.” Ed and Barb Ogden are no exception to this rule. “When I come here, I am here to relax,” Barb explained, “Although I love to cook, it’s not a priority here.” Barb wakes each morning and watches the sun rise over the lake, and she also loves to watch the birds gather as well, “it is amazing to see how many will come to the feeders,” Barb says, “I cherish the time I have here to just be, and I look forward to what every season has to offer.” Ed enjoys fishing and cannot choose which season is his favorite on the lake, “we really just look forward to coming here all of the time.” Ed practices law at a large firm and he will not retire “as long as he can talk and is still having fun.” So the proximity to their primary residence played a factor in the purchase of the home. The Ogden’s have two children, Sarah and Cody, who are both on their own, but often join their parents at the retreat. “It is family time when we come here,” both kids agree, “we just enjoy simple things like sitting by the fire.” Continued on page 30

Love Nest: Rinehimer Construction

"Lake Naomi is a unique place where families can come together and make memories for generations to come - with every first class amenity right at your doorstep."

A recent article on WSJ.com (The Wall Street Journal Online) states, “Monroe County, Pa., in the heart of the Pocono Mountains, saw a 3% decline in total home sale transactions, but its Lake Naomi resort community was up nearly 15%. A one-acre plot off Lake Naomi recently fetched $1.1 million, a record deal for the area.” The Ogden’s new they wanted water, they new they wanted the country and when they purchased the house 10 years ago, they knew they would need some major remodeling and that is when they met with Rinehimer Construction. Barb was laughing when she told me that her sister affectionately compares Bert Rinehimer, President of Rinehimer Construction to “Mike Holmes from the TV Show Holmes on Homes.” The home was originally built in the 80’s in the typical, old style T111 sided, Pocono A-frame (we all know the look, and the challenges that go right along with the style). The couple knew they wanted to transform the home, but only had ideas of what they liked. Bert Rinehimer came in and made their ideas a reality. The most dramatic change came by remodeling the outside of the home. The original driveway was more ski slope than carport and the house lacked any real character, so both Rinehimer and The Ogdens’ knew they were facing some hardwork. “By changing the architecture, artwork and details we created a fresh look for the home,” Rinehimer explained, “The Ogden’s knew what they wanted and we made it happen.” Rinehimer has been remodeling and building new custom homes throughout Lake Naomi for 18 years. His belief in quality, craftsmanship and attention to detail is probably the reason why his clients think of him as a friend and keep coming back again and again, “Bert has become a friend to us as well as our builder,” Barb explained, “once Rinehimer understands what we want, our job is done and we get to relax again, we know it will happen.” There has never been an unanswered phone call or email they have not responded to, Ed explained, “and that is a great thing.” Bert is President of the Rinehimer team and his wife, Patty Rinehimer, is CFO . This past spring Michael Dembinski joined them as Vice President of the company. Dembinski sees a major potential for growth within the company as well as in the Lake Naomi area, “Lake Naomi is a unique place where families can come together and make memories for generations to come - with every first class amenity right at your doorstep." Wellness

By: Danielle Rake, Spirit of Women Coordinator at Pocono Medical Center

A Roman philosopher once stated, “Anger, if not restrained, is frequently more hurtful to us than the injury that provokes it.” Have you ever found yourself driving through a busy intersection during rush hour traffic yelling at the “incompetence” you always seem to encounter out on the road? Or have you ever found yourself losing your patience with a co-worker or a loved one? Anger has become part of our daily routine. While it’s a perfectly natural emotion in small doses, excessive anger has the ability to trigger one of the deadliest health conditions affecting our community to date—stroke. According to the American Heart Association, stroke is “the third largest cause of death, ranking behind ‘diseases of the heart’ and all forms of cancer. Stroke is a leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States.” Anger escalates heart rate, breathing and arterial tension while lowering cortisol levels, increasing chances for an episode of stroke in your life. It is important to recognize and to be aware of some of the most common instigators of anger such as traffic jams, humiliation, grief, and rude behavior. As we begin to recognize what makes us angry, we are able to plan ahead and control our feelings in a positive way. Pause for a moment, take a deep breath and use the tips below to guide you back to a state of tranquility, and most importantly – good health. • Keep an anger journal. Write down which people and situations make you most angry. Also make note of how you react and what feelings are behind the anger. Learn to recognize when these feelings are triggering an angry reaction. • Be understanding. Put yourself in another person’s place and view the person with care and concern. Use selftalk to help yourself. • Call a “time-out.” Step back from the situation, take several deep breaths and calm yourself down. You may need to move away from the situation before you can handle it. • Control how you react physically. Try not to curse, sigh, speak loudly, shake your fist or point your finger. • When you feel angry, use a three-step approach: Stop, ask yourself questions, then react. The first question is: “Would a jury of people think I should be angry?” If the jury says “yes,” ask yourself, “Is this a situation I need to fix, and can I fix it?” If you decide you must fix the situation, wait until you cool off, then take action. Life is too short to shorten it further with anger. Transform the negative energy that’s expelled through anger - use simple and quick physical outlets such as a 15-minute meditation break or taking a brisk walk to re-center your mind. When you find yourself in an angry situation, remember the simple pleasures in your life, regain control over your emotions and reclaim your strength. Visit PoconoMedicalCenter.org to view our upcoming Spirit of Women programs and wellness tools for a stroke-free lifestyle. Danielle Rake is the Coordinator for the Spirit of Women program at Pocono Medical Center. The PMC Spirit of Women collaborates with the PMC Wellness Institute to provide health screenings and host educational events to further improve the lives of women and their families in the community. The Spirit of Women Day of Dance event is scheduled for February 26, 2011. For additional information or to become a Spirit of Women member visit, PoconoMedicalCenter.org/JoinSpirit.

Stroke Facts About Strokes Stroke is classified as a brain disease that affects the arteries leading to and within the brain. It occurs when a blood vessel carrying oxygen and nutrients to the brain is blocked by a clot, or bursts. When this occurs, part of the brain cannot get the blood and/or oxygen necessary and begins to die.

Two Types of Stroke • An ischemic stroke forms a clot which obstructs the flow of blood to the brain • A hemorrhagic stroke causes a rupture of a blood vessel that prevents the blood flow to the brain

Warning Signs • Sudden numbness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination • Sudden, severe headache with no known cause

Treatment Generally there are three treatment stages for stroke: prevention, therapy immediately after the stroke and post-stroke rehabilitation. Medication or drug therapy is the most common treatment for stroke. The most popular classes of drugs used to prevent or treat stroke are antithrombotics (antiplatelet agents and anticoagulants) and thrombolytics.

Puppy Love

Pawsitively Heart Healthy By: Doc Pawsitive, Claire Thompson, Leader of The Pack

absolutely... Pawsitively While hospitalized at Pocono Medical Center in their Intensive Care Unit undergoing kidney dialysis, I not only received the best medical care available, I was fortunate enough to enjoy some good old fashioned “pet therapy”! Besides frequent kidney dialysis to filter blood toxins, I had daily bedside visits from Dr. Sammie, my wife and business partner. The visits included a pack of therapy dogs including Whitney and Climber, a pair of competition field trial champion Golden Retrievers, and Max, a 140 pound English Mastiff rescue. Though too weak to participate in traditional physical therapy exercises, I spent hours lying in bed, stroking my furry- friendly visitors, talking to them and reassuring my pets that my recovery would be 100%. We would be hiking together on the Appalachian Trail soon enough! Frequently the nurses would cut the visits with Dr. Sammie and the therapy dogs short, but not because visiting hours were over. In fact, the nurses would often present a list of patients requesting “pet therapy” by the dogs they’d seen walking the hospital hallways! Armed with a list of room numbers, Dr. Sammie and her small pack would end visiting hours providing non-traditional health care to a host of other patients. Long ago, Dr. Sammie and I recognized the healing powers that pets provide for people. Thoroughly documented scientific studies have clearly shown the health benefits of pet ownership. Simply being in the presence of a pet has “pawsitive” healthy consequences. Hospital patients enjoy daily doggy visits, and there is scientific proof patients have a lower resting heart rate, decreased blood pressure, and reduced stress when the pets are present. Several studies of women undergoing cardiac stress tests showed patients taking the test with a dog present had lower blood pressure than taking the same test in the presence of friends. Wow! What does that say about their friends? Ditch the friends and get a pet! Arriving home after a possibly stressful workday, a bit tired, maybe grumpy - a pet owner is often greeted at the door by an unabashed, admirer clearly demonstrating that its owner is clearly - “The Center of the Universe!” Although tired and stressed, the owner recognizes the need for a walk so the dog can get some exercise, let off some steam and take care of bodily functions. Instead of reaching for a drink after work, dog owners reach for the leash, setting off a myriad of pawsitively, heart healthy reactions. While the dog looks on expectantly, our pet owner starts talking to the dog, “ do you wanna go out? Let’s go for a walk! You need to go potty? Let’s go for a walk”! Meanwhile, our pet owner is experiencing a drop in blood pressure, stress levels are dropping, worries are forgotten and attention is focused on getting the dog some exercise, while they walk along and breathe in the fresh air together and the days worries fade away. Leaving the house as a team, our party of two walks briskly, yet must stop frequently to answer questions such as, “What kind of dog is that? Where did he come from? What’s his name? Can I pet him?” During the workday, our pet owner rarely has non-work conversation. During the dog walks, all conversation centers on the dog. The pair always seems to

34

meet new people and make new friends, often other dog owners. After their walk, the owner and dog adjourn to the kitchen to prepare and enjoy dinner. They also continue to relate to one another, share adoring glances, pleasant conversation and being near one another. Since getting home from work after a busy, stressful day, the pet owner had enjoyed decreased blood pressure, decreased stress level, some additional exercise, met some new people, spoke with old friends, enjoyed pleasant conversations and has started to relax. Maybe in addition to better insurance rates for non-smokers, our life and health insurance providers should offer discounts to pet owners thanks to the clear health benefits our furry friends provide. Be pawsitive, pet ownership is heart healthy! Doc Pawsitve, Clair Thompson, is “Leader of the Pack” at East Stroudsburg Veterinary Hospital and PAWS/Pocono Animal Wellness Services. Dr Clair has spent his entire life and career studying and researching his own “Theory of Pawsitivity”. The Theory of Pawsitivity holds there is a unique relationship between man and animals that leads to a pawsitive energy flow in both directions. Pawsitive energy flow clearly demonstrates the pawsitive relationship of being in the presence of pets! This pawsitive energy flow leads to happier, healthier, longer lives for all involved! Live longer, get a pet! Doc Pawsitive is a 1991 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine and his wife Dr Sammie was a classmate at Penn. Doc Pawsitive is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Pennsylvania Veterinary Medical Association, the Association of Shelter Veterinarians and Alley Cat Allies. Dr Clair and Sammie share their Snydersville home with 8 dogs and 3 cats. Prior to becoming a veterinarian, Dr Clair worked as a zookeeper, roadside alligator wrestler and snake charmer, nuclear reactor operator trainee, landscape gardener and he trapped and vaccinated raccoons for the city of Philadelphia!
