GIVE!
Blooms Blossoms Touring the Gardens of the Pocono Mountains By Susan Crowley
Create a special day for yourself! The Monroe County Historical Association invites all those who enjoy nature’s splendor to attend the 2014 MCHA Garden Tour. Ten beautiful and unique gardens in South Stroudsburg and the Stroudsburg’s historic district are on the tour. Homeowners will be joined by volunteers who will share from personal experiences the do’s and don’ts of gardening. The garden owners are delighted to share their thoughts on gardening’s positive impact while you peruse their pride and joy. Weber’s Rimrock Gardens will be a highlight of the tour. Known as “Snydersville’s best kept secret,” Rimrock Gardens prides itself in growing rare and unique plants, flowers, and trees. Owners Shirley and Todd Weber design and cultivate two acres of land into enchanted gardens and continually seek atypical plantings and garden accessories to add to their landscape presentations. Rimrock Gardens showcases five hundred types of hosta and fifty Japanese maple and other unusual trees, including ginkgo biloba and umbrella pines. The knowledgeable Webers enjoy answering questions about their myriad plants. They belong to many garden societies, including America Hosta, Hardy Plants, and American Conifer. Weber’s Rimrock Gardens not only offers a picturesque walk, but also allows visitors to see ways to put plants, colors, and textures together
to make an aesthetic statement. The plants in the gardens are sold on the grounds, and many are propagated on site. The Webers like to think of it as an “inspiration center, rather than a garden center!” They love teaching potential gardeners about the plants and trees in their two-acre paradise. Shirley happily exclaims, “The garden is your playground…have fun with it!” Those who visit Weber’s Rimrock Gardens will leave knowing; “He who plants a garden plants happiness.”
5 Plus 1 Membership Initiative Anyone (member or new member) who signs up five (5) new members for the Monroe County Historical Association (MCHA) will receive his or her renewal or new membership for free (initiative in effect through December 31, 2014). Living in Their House Nancy Hopping Photography
By Laura Wilhelms
“Through my photography, I want people to understand more about the wildlife in their own backyards,” says Nancy Hopping whose passion for both nature and photography has resulted in over 500,000 images of Pocono flora and fauna. “I would like people to have a better understanding about the wildlife we encounter so we can all live together,” Nancy explains. She also wants people to understand that, just like people, animals have a lighter side, and she frequently captures this lighter side with her camera, such as the afternoon a mother bear and her three yearlings came to Nancy’s back yard to play with rubber ducks Nancy had staged in her fishpond.
Nancy Hopping
Nancy’s camera lens has captured the eagle circling in the sky, the bear family ambling through the flower garden, the coyote out for a stroll. “The wildlife in my backyard is the same wildlife in your backyard,” she says. “It’s important for all of us to know that we are living in their house, that we need to respect them.” Nancy, who is also a fly fishing guide, hopes to open new windows into learning about these amazing animals through her photography. She hopes to inspire people through her talents and passions so people want to go out and learn more. On a beautiful autumn evening last September Nancy headed to the lower lake at Promised Land State Park with her camera equipment and kayak. Her intention was to capture photos of a beautiful sunset. What she was able to photograph was something completely different and unexpected: a beaver in the water. As Nancy quietly paddled in the direction of the beaver lodge, she noticed a black bear coming out of the woods. She silently watched from her kayak as the bear started poking around the beaver lodge. The bear then wandered into the water a little bit, and the beaver swam up to him, slapping his tail and alerting that bear that he was going to protect his house. The bear hurried back to the woods. In amazement of the communication between these two animals, Nancy snapped away with her camera Nancy’s ability to understand the wildlife that we live among and her passion for photography make for beautiful images of nature, wildlife and the beauty that surrounds us. The 69th annual Buck Hill Falls Art Show, which will be held on Friday and Saturday, July 18th and 19th, will offer new and innovative features, according to art show chair Anne Russo. In addition to the traditional art and jewelry vendors, and the ever popular Gertie’s Garret flea market and gourmet table overflowing with Buck Hill specialties, this summer’s art show will showcase works by the late renowned artists Sterling and Dorothy Strauser and Justin McCarthy, and feature a marketplace offering local produce and foodstuffs. “A self -taught yet acclaimed impressionist painter from East Stroudsburg, Strauser’s paintings are included in permanent collections of the Allentown Art Museum; Cheekwood Museum and Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN; the American Museum in Bath, England and in numerous private and corporate collections,” explained Russo, “and he is credited with discovering and encouraging Justin McCarthy who spent his entire life in Weatherly. McCarthy’s work has been included in major exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art and the American Museum of Folk Art in Manhattan, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia.” “These are two significant artists from our own community,” Russo added, “and the Buck Hill Art Association is pleased to raise awareness of their work and importance. Peter Blume, a Buck Hill resident and former director of the Allentown Art Museum, will offer commentary on the artists and their paintings on Friday and Saturday at the Buck Hill Kerby Library where the paintings will be on display,” she added. The art show will also include a Marketplace featuring local produce and foodstuffs. “It will be a feast for your eyes and your palate,” Russo said, “and we invite everyone to join us for this exciting summer treat.” For more information about the Buck Hill Art Show, contact Anne Russo at 595-807-3881.

Leisure, Laurel and Learning
Promised Land State Park Photo submitted by Anna McWilliams
Start your morning at Promised Land State Park by picking up a map at the park office and enjoying an early hike on any of the 50 miles of clearly marked, family-friendly trails. In the early weeks of June, the 1800 Trail is an easy one that weaves through a sea of blooming mountain laurel. After a picnic lunch by the sandy beach and a swim in the lake to cool off, bike the six-mile paved loop around the lake. Stop off to explore Conservation Island. Towards the end of the loop, enjoy an ice cream cone at the lake store. Afterwards, pop into the Masker Museum, one of the largest Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) museums in the state and learn the story of the park’s development. Rent a canoe for a late afternoon paddle before dinner at the Old Ranger Inn. Then slip on a fleece jacket and head to a park ranger’s evening nature presentation by the campfire.

Ride a Pony
Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area Photo by Monroe County Transit Authority
Hikers, bikers, and boaters in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area can all hop on board the free shuttle service called The Pocono Pony, which also hauls boats, bikes and gear along numerous stops of the McDade Trail from May 24 to Sept. 1. The 32-mile trail along the Pennsylvania side of the park passes through forested areas and farm fields and past views of the river and cliffs. Terrain varies from rugged foot trail to wide gravel paths. This trail is for everyone; trailheads provide access every 0.5 to 5.3 miles. The Pony provides service from the Delaware Water Gap Borough to Downtown Milford with stops at many destinations in between. For those paddling the Delaware River, boat portage is available at these boat launches: Smithfield Access, Bushkill Access, Dingmans Access and Milford Beach. For bus schedules and itineraries of things to do in the park, visit gomcta.com/trip.php or nps.gov/dewa/planyourvisit/hikes-mcdade.htm
Nature’s Playground
Hickory Run State Park Both man and nature designed a delightful playground at Hickory Run. After picking up a park map at the office on route 534, start with a morning stretch to Hawk Falls, a .6 mile trail that crosses a footbridge and winds through a tunnel of native rhododendron, which burst into bloom in early July. After a morning of meditation gazing at the 25 foot Hawk Falls, head to the Sand Spring Lake area for a 19-hole game of disc golf, where you traverse along a mile-long path through the woods, while aiming your Frisbee-like disc at metal mesh baskets. Then, take a dip in the lake before your picnic lunch. After a nap in the shade, it’s time to tackle one of the three orienteering courses in the park, or embark upon a geocaching treasure hunt with your GPS. Be sure to leave time to play at the park’s National Natural Landmark: the Boulder Field. Park at the lot next to the edge of the field so you can save your energy for scrambling through the 16-acre expanse of boulders, which nature cracked apart over 20,000 years ago. The geological history of the area will set your mind reeling as you head off to Louie’s Prime Steakhouse in Lake Harmony or Murphy’s Loft in Blakeslee for dinner.

It’s All Downhill
Lehigh Gorge State Park
Photo submitted by Whitewater Challengers Whether you choose to bike, boat or hike, you’ll be dazzled by lush forests, sparking rapids, breathtaking rock formations, and majestic waterfalls along over 25 miles of the scenic and well maintained D&L Trail within Lehigh Gorge State Park. Either tackling the whole trail or half, be assured that if you start north and head south, it really IS “all downhill,” as the trail is built on an abandoned railroad grade (Arrange a shuttle to take you and your bikes back northward). Rockport is the mid-point, so you can step down the distance by doing the 10 miles from White Haven to Rockport or the 15 miles from Rockport to Jim Thorpe as you explore the remains of the former Lehigh Canal and the legacy of the railroad. Whitewater Challengers (whitewaterchallengers. com) provides bike shuttles and rental bikes—or will shuttle your own bikes. Whitewater Challengers can also ratchet up the action with their rafting adventures. The weekend dam releases stir up the thrills for all ages. By dinnertime, you’ll be ready for a big platter from the Powerhouse Eatery in White Haven or a leisurely café meal in the charming, historic town of Jim Thorpe.

Throughout the summer, birds have an urgent need to refresh their colors for the breeding season. Why the great transformation? To attract a mate, you will need to be seen and heard. A male bird sitting conspicuously among the branches of its territory will burst into song, while his plumage shines boldly in the sun. Their singing proclaims to all that they have established a breeding territory. Male birds sing loud and clear in a vibrant chorus we hear each morning, even before the snow is gone from our yards. The beautiful colors of their plumage make them attractive to the female of their species. Their brilliant, refreshed feathers also proclaim their strength and their fitness for raising a family. In birders lingo, they have changed into their alternate or breeding plumage. For the male American goldfinch, a well-known backyard feeder bird, the alteration is dramatic, requiring a complete transformation from the drab colors of winter, into their bright yellow plumage with its contrasting black cap. The female retains the more subdued golden hues throughout the year. The northern cardinal is another feeder favorite. They inspire us on the coldest winter days when seen in the boughs of a snow-covered evergreen. Although the transformation isn’t as dramatic for cardinals, they will molt into brilliant fresh red feathers for summer. The common yellowthroat is a summer resident throughout the Poconos nesting in thickets along streams and creeks. It, too, refreshes its dazzling yellow breast and bold, black mask for summer. Even the red-winged blackbird offers views of his shiny black feathers in striking contrast with the bright red and yellow epaulettes. The male’s brilliant plumage may also help in successfully rearing a family, by making them more attractive to the predators. The brightly colored male will make himself known by making noise and flitting from limb to limb in an attempt to attract a predator away from the nest. His mate’s plumage is often more camouflaged, which offers more protection to any eggs or young inside the nest. The summer sun makes all of the colors sparkle from the fiery orange of the Baltimore oriole to the cinnamon tones of the wood thrush and the blazing scarlet tanager. Yes, the breeding season is here, so get outside and enjoy the dazzling display of our breeding birds.

LIVING
Lake Naomi
Life Made Easy By Karen Tetor | Photos by Regina Nicolardi
When Bill and Susan Andrews wanted to build their downsized retirement dream home in Lake Naomi, they presented Rinehimer Construction with a challenge: craft a low-maintenance home for two active outdoor retirees. Focus on natural materials and skilled craftsmanship; have lots of open space, and maintain simplicity of style. Conserve on square footage, but make it feel spacious. Be sure the house showcases the lakefront setting. But above all, make this new home a mecca for one nine-year-old and three pre-school grandchildren. Bert Rinehimer and Michael Dembinski, of Rinehimer Construction, smiled, shook hands with the Andrews, enlisted Architects Schoonover and Vanderhoof, and this past July, the Andrews moved from suburban Philadelphia to their new home in Lake Naomi. “We moved in on a Wednesday,” laughs Susan. “And the grandkids came Thursday evening for the weekend!” Among the dozens of design decisions—from gable styles to stain colors—the Andrews say their best decision was choosing Rinehimer Construction, who made their first experience with home-building “fun.” “Any idea we came up with, Michael was game,” says Susan. “Michael takes care of the customers, and Bert takes care of the details and getting it all done,” explains Bill. The couple admits vacillating with design of the garage door windows and the color of the beam stain. “We ended up deciding upon garage door windows and no stain on the beams—just urethane,” chuckles Bill. “But in every idea exchange, Rinehimer Construction would say, “We would be happy to accommodate this.”
The Playhouse Under the Stairs
“The playhouse under the stairs was Rinehimer Construction’s idea, and we love it!” says Susan. The children’s domain nestles under the staircase, yet its window peers into the specious open living area. The
color variations of the hand-split cedar shakes facing the playhouse are part of the harmonious interplay of wood: the oak Shaker-style stair railings, the knotty pine interior doors, the four-inch oak floors, which were finished on-site, and the exposed timbers.
The Home’s Exterior
“This home reflects the Lake Naomi cottage design,” says Michael Dembinski, who worked with the Andrews through every phase of building. The Douglas Fir gable trusses on the exterior are a signature Rinehimer detail. Ledge stone porch pillars, cedar garage doors and hand-made copper lighting utilize natural materials that visually merge the home with the surrounding woods. “Using fiber cement siding in Mountain Sage, a fiberglass front entry door and Trex decking keeps the look natural, yet the maintenance easy,” says Dembinski.
Timbered Ceilings
The geometric shoulder of timbered beams that lead from the entryway and over the expansive kitchen counter creates a dramatic “Wow” factor as you enter the home. The eye then sweeps through the two-story open living area to the ledge stone fireplace façade. Local craftsmen have cast their artistry on every dramatic detail, from the hand-made maple cabinetry to the live edge pine fireplace mantle and cabinet shelf. “We met everyone who worked on our house,” says Susan. “They all cared about doing quality work for Bert.” Michael explains that Rinehimer Construction works with a tight network of building associates. That relationship kept us well informed,” says Bill. “Rinehimer Construction continually sent us progress reports, e-mailed photos, and responded to our questions.”
A Gazebo Porch
The Andrews, who confess their drawing skills are rather basic, took a hand at designing some key facets of the home. Susan’s pencil sketched out her gazebostyle dream porch, with pine ceiling and Douglas Fir beams that radiate out from the center. Bill designed the living area bookcases. Sometimes, they left the decisions to the experts. In addition, Erb’s Landscaping designed the freeform stone patio, with each piece chiseled to natural curves. In the center circles a massive fire-pit, where the grandchildren love to toast marshmallows.
Rinehimer Construction is located in Downtown Business Square in Pocono Pines, PA. For more information, visit rdcustombuilders.com or call 570.643.6653.

If the Shoe Fits
You’ve been to Ready Set Run Written by Karen Tetor | Photos by Stephen Lippay
“We call her ‘The Shoe Whisperer,” confides one customer, describing Ready Set Run storeowner Trish D’Imperio. The store’s shelves of technical shoes are labeled for every surface—from track to trail. Yet Trish’s mental database whirls through a mountain of variables as she eyes the customer’s foot and methodically digs for the answers that will lead to the perfect shoe. Those who walk into historic building on Main Street in Stroudsburg come for far more than footwear and sports apparel. They come for the passion Trish and her staff pour out for those aiming to walk off a few (or more) pounds, make a fitness life change or run a first marathon. “Did you bring in your old running shoes so I can look at the wear pattern?” Trish queries. “What are you looking to do in these new shoes?” Trish asks about the customer’s injuries and issues. She looks the heel strike, the curve of the arches, the stability. Trish starts with a short stack of choices. She watches the customer stride the wooden floorboards of the historical former hardware store. Then comes the scrutiny on the treadmill, followed by Trish’s sending the shoed customer outside, as she continues the gait analysis. Trish heads back to the shelves, and the feet ultimately find the perfect fit. “Probably the biggest problems for customers is sorting through the landmine of info on the internet,” Trish asserts. “They come in here with a ton of information, when so much of it doesn’t apply to them.”
Ready?
Sign up for Ready Set Run’s training programs. The HalfMarathon Training program is geared to the runner who is currently running 5-6 miles and would like to complete a half marathon. “Forward Motion,” a walking/running program that welcomes beginners and sets the goal of completing a 5K, attracts over 200 women each spring. RSR’s team of coaches also does personalized training. “The Half-Marathon Training enabled me to cut 18 minutes from my time!” professes Eileen Noelle White, a RSR loyal customer.
Set?
RSR pumps up the champion spirit and technical advice that puts you in the starting position. “What’s your long run now?” “You’re right on track!” “You made your time!” The banter at the counter is that of friends who gather at RSR to brag a little, confess a tad, and elicit some feedback. “People know I’ve ‘been there,’” smiles Trish, who counts the Boston Marathon as just one of her accomplishments. An ardent hiker who trekked the entire Appalachian Trail with her sister, Trish shifted to running at the age of 37. She is now training for a 40-mile trail run. Yet among her most passionate devotees are those who are taking the first steps on the fitness trail: the walkers. Trish and her team have an unconditional support system that sets everyone in motion.
Run!
RSR has information on every running event in the area: Run for the Red. Dark & Dirty. Beat Beethoven. Wolf Run. Even better, the team will help find the perfect event for you. “Do you have a partner?” Trish asks. “Of course you’re ready for Run for the Red!” “I’ll put you down now; you have 5 weeks to get ready for St Luke’s Half Marathon!” When the dust settles, the staff doles out the biggest hugs to the retired woman who just ran her first 5K, the passionate runner who didn’t quite make the cut for the Boston Marathon, and the guy who quietly boasts that he just lost 25 pounds on his new walking program. “We’re all about empowerment,” says Trish. Ready Set Run is located at 431 Main Street in Downtown Stroudsburg. For more info, visit readysetrunpoconos.com or call 570.421.6431.

Pocono Tranquil Gardens
Keeping the Memories Sweet
By Roseanne Bottone
The young Mahesh Chhabria grew up in India and wanted to become a doctor as a mode of service. “My parents taught me to think of my life from the perspective of giving to society,” he explains. “When I first studied to become a doctor, I didn’t know right away what I would specialize in. But then I became fascinated with the dynamics through which the brain functions and its many pathways – what makes a person smile, talk, their body language and emotions,” he says. In 1985, at the age of 27, Dr. Chhabria immigrated to the US to further his studies in the field of neurology. “I’m blessed to be here,” he says. His vision was to create a sanctuary for people with Alzheimer’s and other degenerative cognitive diseases where he could help them preserve their dignity. On January 14, 2013, he opened the Pocono Tranquil Gardens (PTG) to offer personal care and memory solutions to residents and adult day care visitors. Today, 58 people live-in and enjoy state-of-the art cognitive therapy, compassionate daily care, and fun activities for socializing. Twelve adults attend day care regularly where Jen Bayer, a certified dementia practitioner with a degree in therapeutic recreation, creates an individualized plan for them.
The day care program includes arts and painting. “Some of our folks have proven they are good artists – even if they didn’t explore that talent before,” Dr. Chhabria says. In their Journal Club they read articles and discuss them. “We even have volunteers from Northampton Community College come in to help them capture and write memories.” Another technique, Lifestyle Profiling, helps guests with short-term memory loss remember long ago memories and tell their stories. Little by little, they work their way up closer to the present. “I have been given the opportunity to help these people with all proven therapies available today. I am so proud of what we’ve accomplished in the last seven months since we opened our day care facility,” Dr. Chhabria says. “When one of our guests first came in, she was practically mute. Initially, I thought she didn’t talk because she only spoke German. Now she talks, smiles, laughs, and sings!” Pocono Tranquil Gardens is located at 329 East Brown Street in East Stroudsburg, PA. For more information, call 570.426.4000 or visit poconotranquilgardens.com
“I was extremely concerned by the condition of some of our elderly with cognitive challenges in this area,” Dr. Chhabria says. “There was a man wandering in the woods, others suffer from poor hygiene and nutrition, and many battle memory issues that also cause depression.” There are two types of residential areas at PTG; one is the secure memory unit where safety and constant supervision are of paramount importance for the guest with severe mental impairment; the second is the personal care unit for guests needing help with physical mobility or respite care. Family members sometimes experience a sense of guilt for placing a loved one in such a residence. “But then they see an improvement in their parents’ condition, for example, and they enjoy their visits and quality time together,” Dr. Chhabria says. “The family members can go back to working and living a normal life knowing their relative is enjoying social interactions and cognitive stimulation, eating well, and taking meds in a timely manner. They are safe.” Dr. Chhabria designed the newly renovated adult day care facility himself. “I wanted vibrant colors and a contemporary look, while creating a soothing atmosphere,” he says. An adult’s struggle with memory loss and mental processing difficulties can cause anxiety and depression. Dr. Chhabria speaks most passionately about the comprehensive approach the staff at PTG takes to put their day care visitors at ease. “We have a spa room with soothing music, calming images, and aromatherapy where they can relax and get a massage,” he explains.

the white glove treatment By Roseanne Bottone
The PNC Wealth Management group needed office space that is commensurate with the level of client they serve – classy, memorable, and elegant. The solution? In February 2014, they moved into the first floor offices of the old bank building on Main Street in Stroudsburg. PNC Senior Relationship Manager, Richard Scott, says, “The building dates back to the 1860s. We’ve been managing money for 160 years, so this was a perfect pairing. The well-established venue really tells our story. The new location will give us visibility and help us become more involved in the center of community activity.” The PNC Wealth Management group provides white glove financial services to the more affluent and high-net worth individual with complex needs. Yes, there are many “millionaires next door” in the
Mr. Scott coordinates a team consisting of a Wealth Planner, an attorney responsible for looking at the whole picture including retirement, cash flow, business succession, asset protection, estate and legacy planning, and charitable gifting. He helps the client set his or her initial goals. Then an Investment Advisor will work with the client and planner to secure the proper financial instruments to bring the plan to fruition. The Advisor works closely with the client throughout different life stages; he manages the investment piece of the puzzle. The Investment Advisor holds higher credentials than the ordinary advisor. He is a chartered financial analyst. The Trust Advisor manages the administrative and legal requirements and assures that all transactions are to the client’s best interest. Mr. Scott says, “The Trust Advisor makes sure we’re all sitting on the same side of the table with our client.” Finally, a Banking Advisor provides white glove banking services. “Our clients receive extra care and attention.” “We have to earn our client’s business every day,” Mr. Scott says. “A happy client is our best form of advertisement, too. Most of our potential clients are referred to us by our established clientele.” He takes this responsibility quite seriously. “As you can imagine,” he explains, “our client’s word is on the line when they make an important referral like this. We really have to deliver.”
“Our clients receive extra care and attention.” Poconos - individuals who have inherited money from generation to generation, high wage earners who have relocated from NY City, and successful business owners. Mr. Scott says, “It’s not just about the money. We help our clients focus in on their goals, desires and wishes. When we begin working with them, we put the numbers aside. We ask them, ‘Tell us what you enjoy, what you want to do, what’s important to you.’ We ask, ‘How can we help you?’” What distinguishes the PNC Wealth Management group from other financial services providers is their team-based approach to wealth management. Mr. Scott says, “The team approach is the right approach for someone who has complex needs and desires a comprehensive plan of action.” The client benefits from expert advice that goes deep, as well as many years of collective experience. “We’re a locally based team,” Mr. Scott says. “We live and work right here in the Pocono area. We are always available to sit down with our clients for face-to-face meetings. Our accessibility means a lot to them.”

The PNC Wealth Managers aren’t just some stodgy, old-world bankers. They use modern, cutting-edge tools to help their clients see where they stand, and where they’re headed. PNC Wealth Insight ® is an online tool that was built off of their clients’ input and perspective. They, and their advisors, can view their portfolios at a glance. There’s a mobile app for android and iPhones too. Mr. Scott says, “The clients tested the beta program, and we tweaked it based on their feedback to make it really useful for them. They can see current asset allocation, balances and performance – and change how they view information.” They can track bank accounts, investments, loans, real estate, and collectibles - all in one place. The novelist and philosopher Ayn Rand said, “Money is only a tool. It will take you wherever you wish, but it will not replace you as the driver.” Mr. Scott responds to this quote by saying, “That’s really true. We help our clients manage their own money. We want them to keep control. We just help them clarify what they want to achieve and draw up a road map to get them there.” PNC Wealth Management is located at 639 Main Street in Stroudsburg. Come home By Karen Tetor
Come home to
the early 1900s The Craftsman cottages and bungalows of the early 1900s charm us back to an era of gabled roofs and columned front porches. As you drive the meandering roads of Pocono Manor or Pocono Pines, these historic homes—shaped from the earth’s bounty of stone and timber— nestle harmoniously within their sylvan settings. These signature homes deliver us to an era where jazz floated from the radio through rows of transom windows and merged with the breeze on the shaded front porch. A time when a child plucked her copy of The Secret Garden from a handcrafted wall of book cases and settled into a pillowed window seat. When a family gathered in the evening by the large stone fireplace to play Tiddley Winks while Raggedy Ann watched coyly from the inglenook. The generation of Arts and Crafts inspired homes proclaimed an attitude. Born at a time when the industrial revolution had glutted America with mass-produced buildings and goods, these designs declared their love for the craftsman, the value of man over machine. Stonecutters and cabinetmakers were the creative heroes who championed simplicity, honesty, beauty and artistry over industry’s obsession with quantity and size.

Authentic Mountain Properties by Rinehimer Construction Inc. turns back the clock for homebuyers longing to rediscover Craftsman style without enacting traumatic renovation scenes from This Old House. An historically researched trove of over 500 home plans spins 21st century construction with early 20th century style and old world craftsmanship. “We are revitalizing the classic Pocono Mountain look,” says Michael Dembinski, of Rinehimer Construction. Bert Reinheimer and his building team use the plans as starting points to create homes with Arts and Crafts detail, Gustav Stickley’s concept of simplicity, and bungalow charm. Rinehimer Construction then works with the buyer to customize the home. “Ultimately, we create something unique,” Dembinski says. Rinehimer Construction preserves the stylistic details in period homes designed for the modern family. A spacious kitchen looks up to exposed native wood timbers and beams. A discreet laundry room tucks behind a central staircase with crafted millwork. A first-floor master bedroom with full bath reflects honeyed warmth from the pine paneling and exposed joinery and timbers. The materials are ageless: stone and wood. Economy of space and open floor plans reflect the truth that quality of life is what matters. The palette of earthen hues and materials subdues the often-harried lives of internet-era homeowners, and the Craftsman style imbues respect for the earth and artist. Meanwhile, modern construction whispers convenience and ease in maintenance.
Craftsman homes are speaking to a new Pocono generation, assuring them of quality of materials and workmanship. The grandparents who respected Arts and Crafts philosophy of anti-mass production now inspire the adult grandchildren, who are similarly weary of the big-box store consumer mentality. Authentic Mountain Properties by Rinehimer Construction is located in Downtown Business Square in Pocono Pines, PA. For more information, visit authenticmountainproperties.com or call 570.643.6653.

Is your pet part of your family? Some people don’t realize how much a pet can become an integral part of their everyday lives. That’s why it is important that you make sure that your pet’s health is well cared for too. Keeping your pet healthy inadvertently keeps you healthy as well—owning a pet is literally good for you! We are here to tell you that there are some simple solutions to keeping the furriest member of your family as healthy as possible.
Make your home a pet-safe environment. Pet-proofing your home is often overlooked when you first bring your pet home. It is important to realize that some plants, such as dieffenbachia, philodendron, hyacinth, and mistletoe, are highly dangerous and could potentially kill your beloved pet. Medications and pesticides can also have negative effects on your pet. Be sure to keep any low-hung wires stowed safely away from pets who could be tempted to chew on them. Make sure you schedule regular veterinary appointments. Keeping your pet up to date on vaccinations is a key step in preventing any serious medical conditions. Regularly scheduled appointments can also help to detect any problems that your pet may be having before they get too serious. Design a diet and exercise plan for your pet. Just like people, many pets today are not getting enough exercise. Obesity in cats and dogs can lead to heart disease. Discuss with your veterinarian what level of exercise your pet can enjoy at any stage in its life. Chocolate is toxic to pets. It contains a harmful chemical that can be deadly to your animal. Antifreeze is another toxic substance that can potentially kill your pet. It smells and tastes sweet to them but when ingested is deadly even in small amounts. Be sure to inspect under cars in the driveway and garage before you let your pets roam. Heartworm is a serious disease. Pets in warm climates are more susceptible to heart disease. Be sure to have them tested and to provide preventive care against heartworms. Speaking with your veterinarian will help you to make the best decisions concerning your pet. Your pet will thank you for its Paw-sitively Healthy existence. Source: www.healthypet.com/PetCare/PetCareArticle.aspx

Bond Primer For two years, pundits, strategists and even some financial advisors have predicted a great rotation out of bonds and into stocks. However, if you are at or are nearing retirement age the need for fixed income is quite apparent. Although there is almost always a need for the growth aspects of equities in portfolios, fixed income investments enable investors to generate income with which to spend rather than depleting one’s principal. The problem is; few advisors and even fewer investors understand how to properly construct a fixed income portfolio.
Thomas Byrne
Director of Fixed Income Wealth Strategies & Management LLC 570-424-1555 Office 570-234-6350 Cell E-mail: thomas.byrne@ wsandm.com www.bond-squad.com
Notice we said “construct a fixed income portfolio” rather than “purchasing shares of fixed income-related investments.” No asset class can truly replicate the benefits and features provided by actual bonds. These features include predictable income and a degree of certainty provided by a bond’s stated maturity. Investors have been warned that prices of fixed income investments can decline when interest rates rise. However, because most bonds have stated maturities, investors can hold until maturity and receive all of their principal, regardless of interest rate movement, provided the issuer is solvent.
This brings us to the subject of credit quality. During the past several years, many investors have been drawn to the comparatively attractive returns available in high yield debt (including junk bonds). The reason that high yield debt tends to offer higher returns is because they subject investors to higher risk of default. Although default rates are low (thanks in large part to low interest rates and a thirst for yield among investors), corporate defaults could increase interest rates rise or the economy slows. Thus, high yield bonds are not suitable for all investors. It has been my experience that suitability trumps all other concerns. Even the “most attractive” investment is unsuitable if it is inconsistent with the goals, objectives and risk tolerance of specific investors. Before constructing a fixed income portfolio, these three items must be addressed. We must also consider tax implications. Investors who are in high tax brackets might wish to consider tax-free municipal bonds. Investors, who are primarily concerned with capital preservation, might consider U.S. Treasury bonds. However, a customized portfolio of bonds (usually with laddered maturities) usually best meets the needs of most fixed income investors. How a bond ladder should be constructed is beyond the scope of this article. More sophisticated fixed income strategies also require more time and space than we have here. The U.S. population is aging more rapidly than ever. Most of the Nation’s wealth is now in the hands of Baby-Boomers. These Boomers will need reliable income off which to live and they will need to preserve capital as their ability to generate new wealth is more constrained than while they were working. As such, fixed income investing could become more popular than ever during the next two decades. It pays to be prepared.
High yield/junk bonds (grade BB or below) are not investment grade securities, and are subject to higher interest rate, credit, and liquidity risks than those graded BBB and above. They generally should be part of a diversified portfolio for sophisticated investors. International and emerging market investment involves special risks, such as currency fluctuation and political instability and may not be suitable for all investors. Municipal bonds are subject to availability and change in price. They are subject to market and interest rate risk if sold prior to maturity. Bond values may decline as interest rates rise. Interest income may be subject to the alternative minimum tax. Many Municipal bonds are federally tax-free but other state and local taxes may apply. On Saturday May 24th, 25 artists came together to make downtown Stroudsburg a prettier place. Led by Shane Izykowski, 18 original paintings join together to cover an abandoned lot on 6th and Main streets. Time and talent were donated by artists and supplies by individual businesses. Once you check it out, you will understand why the last panel reads, “A Beautiful Moment Happened Here”.
