February is the month of love, let’s take it seriously. The winter weather is finally settling in and for many of us, so is cabin fever. Grab your kids, your sleds and skis and head for the hills. Turn off the television and make some angels in the snow. Make a statement with a snowball in someone’s face rather than a snarky comment on Facebook. Get out from in front of the news and try something new with an old friend instead. Go to The Renegade Winery February 18th or 25th and listen to the awesome band, The Kings of Queen Street. Try a new food, like the amazing Indian flavors at Tandoor Palace, in Tannersville. Learn how to make pottery at Country Home Learning Center in Brodheadsville. Visit Above the Bar, in Pocono Summit, buy yourself some bath balms and relax.

Enjoy the season and this winter issue of Local Flair. We will see you in the Spring.

Seven years ago,

Kelly Gillow opened her home to children in search of learning more about art, but she has loved art for as long as she can remember. “Growing up, I was always painting or drawing something,” Gillow said. “I always wanted to be a teacher and an artist.” After studying early childhood education, then teaching Pre-School for eight years, she opened her home to private students. Gillow’s dream of opening her own studio came true three years ago in the form of Country Home Learning & Art Center in Brodheadsville. The business has taken off and she currently teaches both children and adults in the walk-in location. “It has been so rewarding to build something from nothing and watch it grow,” says Gillow, “it has been so much fun to meet so many great people on their quest to become more creative!” Gillow taught herself how to do everything in her business, “in the beginning, the ad

budget was small, so I would print, wrap and hand deliver advertising to locals before the newspaper delivered,” she explained. From learning how to create the bisques, fire the pottery, work the wheels, she learned it all so she could incorporate the different techniques at Country Home Learning. Country Clay Studio, The Art Loft and The Glass Bottle --- 3 studios in one, where you can paint pottery, glass or canvas without the costly studio fees. Gillow explained, “I wanted to make the studio affordable so everyone would feel it is approachable. You can literally stay all day and paint if you want!” In addition to the walk-in services, Country Home Learning also offers a party room, Paint and Sip Nights and a fantastic Summer Arts Camp for the kids. From June through August, your kids can learn about Art & Science, Art & Craft and Clay. Art Camp at Country Home Learning is flexible and FUN! To see the summer camp schedule go to

www.countryhomelearning.com. “When you’re having fun, it doesn’t feel like work,” says Gillow. “This is so much fun for me...this studio is my dream come true and I go home and feel like I did something good every day.” Remembering a child who was struggling with low self-esteem, Gillow explained, “she was so shy and would barely talk, it was tough for her to communicate, but I could tell how much she loved art. Now, I’m blown away by how much pride she takes in her art work. Putting a smile on one child’s face a day is my reward!”

To view Country Home Learning & Art Center’s event calendar go to www. countryhomelearning.com or phone 610.895.4090 for more information.

PROTSOUK

The language in his paintings can be seen as a continuous folly between his inner-‘Russianess’ and western life. His style changes as his relationship and understanding of his western lifestyle grows. Protsouk’s unique relationship with his surroundings and his subject matter dictates his visual and philosophical language. “Artists see things differently and evoke beauty in what others may seem as usual, mundane or an everyday

If you live or work in the Pocono Mountains, it is almost certain you have seen a painting by Andrei Protsouk. Born in 1961, in Donet’sk, Ukraine, the prolific contemporary painter has called the area his home since 1994, when he moved here with his whole family. Protsouk has embedded his use of line into all of his art and has coined his distinct technique as “Fine Line.” His straight, constructive use of line embodies his classically trained eye in every way. While studying at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, Protsouk was revered as a master of composition. While most artists use only a few elements of composition in their art, Protsouk incorporates all of them into his. The eye is drawn to move around his canvases in a way which allows the viewer to see his paintings differently each time they look. Protsouk has come a long way from Soviet Russia.

occurrence,” he explains, “not me, I see things through the eyes of a true artist representing the world around me as an expression, an extension of my physical being, in my own language and empathy.” The soul of his artwork is his infatuation with human relationships, love and beauty. He takes particular interest in representing love; evoking the beauty of monogamous relationships between a man and woman. His paintings often show people flirting, kissing and hugging while perfoming activities like skiing or eating. Protsouk says, “I believe that the universal language in the world is love because people live together on this planet synchronously and I embrace that in each painting playfully, with unique colors, lines and textures not seen in any other contemporary artists’ work.” His artwork is the very synthesis of emotions he feels with his subjects and his visions of love in the modern world. Protsouk’s art evolution can be seen through his various themes since his immigration to the United States.

He finds inspiration in his environment and in the modern, societal activities which he incorporates into his paintings. His peer artist and great friend, Gennadii Gogoliuk, describes his artwork as ‘Americana Eroticism’; or, the celebration of love and life in a free American society, while enjoying life’s simplest pleasures.

Andrei’s Studio Gallery is located at 7 North 6th Street in Stroudsburg. Visit him online at www.AndreiArt.com for openings and events.

A TASTE OF

INDIA

IN TANNERSVILLE

Located in Tannersville, Tandoor Palace is most notably known for being the only AAA certified Train Coach Restaurant located in the Pocono Mountains. At Tandoor Palace, guests enjoy the exotic flavors and subtle tastes of India’s finest cuisine. Award winning Chefs, Subash Bhardwaj and Ram Chandar Godiyal specialize in North Indian recipes. Chef Subash gave me a tour of the kitchen and explained Tandoor means “clay oven,” in India. “We cook our Naan, Garlic Naan, Roti and our skewered meat dishes in the oven which is 580 degrees,” he explained as he expertly prepared a Garlic Nann that had my name on it. Because most people from India are traditionally vegetarian, it was surprising to learn Tandoor Palace has such a large selection of chicken, lamb, seafood and goat on the menu. “People don’t realize we have such a wonderful variety to choose from, however, there is no beef on the menu. The cow is sacred in India,” explained Chef Subash. Eating at Tandoor Palace is a feast for the senses. Coriander, Turmeric, chili powders and other authentic spices are bought from a specialty importer and blend to create the distinct flavors in all of the curry dishes, marinades for the skewered dishes and sharba’s or soups. Tell your server if you like mild, medium or bold spices and the Chef will prepare your dishes to your preference. The vegetarian dishes are my favorite, when you go, try the Methi Malai Mutter, which is the Chef’s specialty and his own creation. “You will not taste anything like it anywhere!” he shared, “this dish is a blend

of Fenugree leaves, spinach and green peas. Fenugree leaves are known to help lower blood cholesterol, control blood sugar levels and aid with digestion. It is a most flavorful and healthy dish.” Tandoor Palace is AAA rated and serves only the freshest foods. Enjoy lunch, dinner, and take advantage of their new delivery service for your convenience.

Chef Subash shared his CHICKEN TIKKA MASALA RECIPE with us, Go to www.flairmag.com/tandoorpalace to view it.

LIVE. LOVE.

REVOL T.

Opened in November this year, The Renegade Winery has taken over the old Newberry Building in Downtown Stroudsburg. Britton and Amanda Detrick started their Urban Winery two years ago from their home with the intention of opening a spot in Downtown Stroudsburg eventually. The success of Britton’s brother, Randy Detrick of Blue Ridge Winery, spurred their interest and inspired them to go for it. Originally, the couple were thinking about a brewery, but it was a much more expensive endeavor to get off the ground. Amanda explained, “Urban Wineries are becoming popular nationally, because you don’t need the vineyard. We source juices and [now] grapes through partner farmers throughout the country.” They received their official license in April, opened the doors in late November and celebrated their Grand Opening on January 14th with hundreds of their fans.

projects their tagline, “reject tradition with us, be a Renegade.” Hosting great, local bands like The Kings of Queen Street and Regina Sayles on Friday Nights and open mic nights every Thursday from 9pm - 12am will be the norm at the Renegade. The space also lends itself to events like showers, birthday parties and corporate functions. The art and gallery were always a part of the plan. Andrea Rimberg, who runs the SOHO in the Burg Gallery has partnered with the Winery to bring new art to the walls every month. “It’s the perfect pair,” says Rimberg, “great wine and great art!” The next show titled “Love, Love, Love” will open Saturday, February 11th and run through March 9th, featuring paintings, sculpture and photography from emerging local artists.

The winery doesn’t serve food, but guests are welcome to order from Main Street restaurants, like The Charcuterie and Yard of Ale. They will deliver your food for you while you taste the different varieties of wine. As a bonus, everyone who does a tasting, gets a complimentary glass. My favorites are the Petit verdot, which is a full bodied red and the Reisling, which is a white on the dry side. Pair the Riesling with the Brie Grilled Cheese from The Charcuterie and you will not be disappointed. Formerly the SOHO in the Burg Art Gallery, The Renegade has been thoughtfully renovated and the cool and vintage vibe

BLOOMING

In 1991,

Jim Conger and Jim Nelson (affectionately known as “the Jim’s”) opened up shop in Bartonsville. Imaginations specializes in delivering unique floral designs, assisting with complete party and wedding planning, and delivering personalized service and Interior Design in the Pocono Mountains. 25 years later, the only change is their location. The store, which also has unique gifts has moved locations several times before finding its current home in Tannersville inside the old St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. With a flair for fabulous florals, the Imagination’s team love of all things in bloom shows in their portfolio of work. Their favorite flower to work with is tropical but, “it depends on the style we are creating for the bride and groom,” says Conger. “All flowers

are beautiful and we can be creative with any flower type. Our inspiration comes from keeping up with the current trends, researching bridal magazines for gown choices and color combinations. Interacting with our brides on a very personal level is where the true magic happens.” We create one of a kind weddings and never duplicate a previous wedding. It has to be their own style for their own day.” The design process starts as soon as you pick your venue and date. “The earlier the bride and groom start with floral planning, the better,” explains Jim. The initial meeting will almost always uncover a couple’s likes and dislikes - favorite flowers and colors, and what will work within their budget. “We offer suggestions to incorporate their preferences, but also offer alternative suggestions when something they like won’t work. Some flowers are too delicate for designs or to not have a water

source and some are extremely expensive when out of season and can throw off a budget. We can offer different ideas that will still bring their wedding day vision to life,” says Kim Larkin, Imaginations Wedding and Event Coordinator. From a Philadelphia wedding at The Westin where the team created an entire wedding aisle and site inside the hotel, to a contemporary earthy style monochromatic themed wedding in the elegant setting of Mountain Springs Lodge in Reeders where green stole the show, the team at Imaginations will travel anywhere as long as their schedule permits. “We don’t believe in rushing, not the bride OR the family,” says Conger. “Our brides are very special to us, and usually by the time we deliver the flowers on the wedding day, we feel like part of the family. It’s such a wonderful feeling to see their bright smiles and often tears of joy. Our brides are our stars for the day!”

at the new Mountain View Vineyard

Everyone said Randy and

Linda Rice were crazy when they quit their jobs to open Mountain View Vineyard back in 2009. So many believed they could not create a successful vineyard, the pair says “it has been incredibly rewarding to see that all things are possible with hard work, faith and dedication.” Now, seven years after Mountain View Vineyard’s first grand opening, construction has started on a larger winery to accommodate their growth and success. A stunning view of the vineyards awaits as guests drive up the mountain side to the new Winery. Walking into the rustic - yet elegant new building, the tasting room will be four times larger than the original and it will feature a Bistro where guests can grab a light lunch or dinner. The lower level of the building referred to as the “barrel room, will be home to a new winemaking facility. In addition to the indoor space, there is a wrap around porch perfect for taking in the view during cocktail hour. There are beautiful event spaces which can accommodate up to 150 guests. The Rice’s hired a Wedding Coordinator to help couples create a personalized vision for their day and tend to all of the details.

“We are excited to host weddings and special events in the new facility,” says Linda, “in the past, we had to turn down requests for large events because of the small space, now, that problem has been solved!” The Rice’s look forward to hosting community fundraisers, local meetings, showers, rehearsal dinners, and so many more events at the new facility. Even with this spacious new location, the original vineyard will not be forgotten. It will be turned into a brewery. Once the brewery opens, there will be shuttle service available to take guests from the winery to the brewery and back. Though Randy and Linda are all for a bigger and better Winery, they remain serious about protecting the land. “From farming, to production, and even office work, we strive for sustainability at every step of the winemaking and distilling process,” says Linda. With more than 80-acres, the majority of the farm’s new land has been placed in an agricultural preservation and they have worked with the USDA to create a conservation plan that minimizes erosion and manages storm water runoff. Instead of spraying pesticides, a large layer of mulch is used to naturally fertilize

the vines and beetles and other insects are hand-picked off the plants. Once the fruit is harvested, it is moved to the winemaking facility, which is powered by geothermal and solar energy. Natural power is used to maintain the optimum temperature in the winemaking building and energy-efficient LED lighting is used throughout the property. Recycling efforts are made in the tasting room and reusable laminated tasting sheets dramatically reduce paper waste. Mountain View Vineyard’s new location will continue to provide a unique wine and spirits tasting experience as customers enjoy additional space, the ability to host events, the opportunity to enjoy a light meal at the bistro, and a fantastic view.

The new Winery will open its doors by early May 2017. Stay tuned for their Grand Opening Celebration. Follow them on Facebook and Instagram @ mountainviewvineyard. Visit www.MountainViewVineyard. com for more information.

SMILE PEACE LOVE PHOTOGRAPHY East Stroudsburg, PA smile-peace-love.com Callie & Albert grew up together in the same small town though they never really knew too much about each other until after they had left. In their early twenties, Callie reached out to Albert on social media and they began a lifetime together without even realizing it. They journeyed together and supported each other through trials and tribulations. Albert, was in the Army, stationed at Fort Drum and later Afghanistan. Callie was a school teacher working on her Master’s degree. Through the best and worst, they were there for each other while enduring multiple deaths in their close circle of family and friends.

They gave a short introduction and reasoning behind why they chose the self-uniting ceremony and then asked their loved ones for help. As they passed their wedding bands around the entire circle, they recited their vows and asked that each person hold their rings and say a blessing for their marriage. When Albert pronounced them Husband and Wife, their circle of family and friends yelled “You may now kiss your bride!” Albert and Callie believe they crossed paths for a reason. They were meant to be there for each other during both the hard times and the amazing ones.

Albert proposed to Callie on a Fall day at the Kinzua Train Bridge. She of course said “Yes”. The wedding was put together beautifully and was hosted at a gorgeous private, victorian home owned by the church they belong to. With handpicked wild flowers, mismatched colorful chairs, a barn as the backdrop and a rustic-chic theme, it could not have been more beautiful.

I knew instantly when I spoke with Callie & Albert that they were my ideal clients. Their love for each other and confidence resonated. Their engagement session, bridal session and their wedding were all some of my favorite shoots to date. I feel truly honored to have been their photographer. Getting to meet them and capture their unique and beautiful, selfuniting, Quaker ceremony was a moment I will never forget.

They were married in the center of a circle of their friends and family in a self-uniting, Quaker ceremony.

MARKETreport

by BOB KELLY KELLY REALTY GROUP KELLER WILLIAMS REAL ESTATE

Monroe County Housing market Jumps 9.6%

Economic development in Monroe County has taken off over the past two to three years. Now that many of the projects such as the hotels, water parks and hospitals and medical buildings have come online the housing market is also picking up. After eight straight years of housing cost decrease, we are finally started to see the pace of decreases slow in 2015. The population loss also slowed and less housing inventory was available. As I have written in previous issues, this could only have a positive effect going forward. The trend of less housing inventory available continued into 2016 and accelerated with 30-40% less inventory available at times throughout the year. This has resulted in positive price appreciation throughout the year. When the final numbers for the full year 2016 were released, Monroe County median sales price of homes jumped 9.6% and the county saw another increase in total closed sales up 12.2%. Additionally, the average

48 Local Flair | February/March 2017

days it took to sell a home was down to 116. A 12.2% increase in sales marks the fifth straight year of sales increases which has resulted in an 89% increase in total home sales volume over the past five years. It was an odd trend in 2012 through 2015 when we kept seeing increases in sales volume, even as home sale prices decreased. What does this mean? Supply has finally dwindled and home prices for the year have risen almost 10% - good news for Monroe County. If we look at these numbers on a micro scale, increases were present across the board and in all price ranges. As these numbers show, the highest increases in the percentage of homes sold increased more with our upscale market. Homes sold under $200,000 rose 12%, while those which sold between $200,000 to $400,000 were up 26% and homes sold from $400,000 to $2,000,000 were up 32%. The activity we’ve been experiencing through January points to what will be an amazing

2017. It has been extremely busy in the Pocono Mountains with many homes going under contract in what should be the slow time of year and with very limited inventory on the market. While inventory is down, prices are rising and interest rates while rising slightly are still relatively inexpensive hovering in the low 4’s - this may be the year to sell. If you would like to learn more about the housing market, or learn what your home may be able to sell for in this improving housing market, please feel free to give me a call or drop an email to set up an appointment.

LOCALvibe Question: How long have you been in the Pocono mountains? Answer: Doug has lived in the Poconos since 2002, and Peter moved here four years later. Q: What town do you live in? A: Stroudsburg...on Queen Street of course! About a quarter mile apart, Peter lives in the borough and Doug is on the other side of Phillips Street on the township side. Q: Tell us about your music. A: A wide range of covers, from Elvis and classic rock to Skillet and modern pop. A couple acoustic guitars and lot of harmony! We love having our musical friends and family join us as guest performers for a few songs at every gig we can. Impromptu tambourine playing by patrons is usually a given too! Our musical background together is two-fold - the opportunity to serve in the music ministry at East Stroudsburg United Methodist Church, and a local barbershop quartet, The Joyful Noises, which we performed in for 10 years before one of our members moved out of the area. We wanted another outlet to perform and this duo was a perfect choice. When we aren’t playing live music, we’re usually singing along to our favorite songs on TouchTunes when we’re out and about. Q: What’s your favorite local restaurant? A: Tough question...there are so many great restaurants in the Poconos and we have gotten to about all of them. We are fans of the sushi from Fume, the bacon wrapped “supers” at Rudy’s Tavern and the wings and clams at Pub 447. We could probably go on! Q: If you have never been to (blank-in the Poconos) you need to get there now. A: Rudy’s Tavern in East Stroudsburg, Renegade Winery on Main Street in Stroudsburg and The Frogtown Chophouse in Swiftwater. Q: Where do you like to explore? A: We’re both big golfers, so we enjoy the outstanding scenic golf courses in the Poconos.

Doug is the worship leader and Peter is involved with the praise band.

50 Local Flair | February/March 2017

Q: What one change would you love to see happen in the Poconos? A: Perhaps not a change, but a continuing recognition of the importance of the arts in local school districts. We’ve both had great experiences with music and hope others will have the opportunity to do the same. Q: Advice to newcomers. A: Spend time in downtown Stroudsburg. The town has been going through a Renaissance recently and there are familyfriendly activities to take part in just about every weekend. Q: Why do you stay here? A: Great family activities, restaurants, annual events and our church family at East Stroudsburg United Methodist Church.
