Everyone loves fall in the Pocono Mountains. The warm, sun-filled days lead to crisp, cool nights and the changing landscape starts to inspire our creativity. Blankets, sweaters and hats make their way out of our closets to be worn at football games and around the fire. For me, it is a time of retreat and reflection. I love to spend as many days as I can in my studio dreaming up some colorful canvasses and nights cooking up comfort for my family. Speaking of cooking for the family - join us at The Monroe Farmer’s Market on October 15th. It’s Applefest and Local Flair will be making caramel apples for the kids! It’s also the best time of the year for running! So, make sure you sign up for the Women’s Resources Pound the Pavement Purple 5K, on October 23rd. If Halloween is your thing, and you want show off your your best costume, come to the Black and Orange Ball at Mountain Springs Lake on Thursday, October 27th. You can either dress up in costume or in black-tie. Read about the event and Lizzie’s Circle, on page 10. To honor Breast Cancer Awareness month, we added a new feature to our issue; The Pink Pages. We’ve highlighted nonprofits, survivor stories, events and helpful information throughout the pages. I have to be honest, when I was reading the stories, I got a little bit nervous. So many women are being diagnosed in their 30’s and 40’s. Whatever the cause for so many young women discovering breast cancer, early detection is definitely the key to successful treatment. One thing is certain; we all need to get checked, then - double check and remind our mothers, sisters and friends to get checked! There is a full listing of events on pages 40-44, so go and show support. So, that’s my story for the fall. Maybe I will see you at a race or an event. Enjoy the season and keep it local!

In February of 2009, Elizabeth Campanelli was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer. She was fourteen and a student at the Pocono Mountain East High School. For eighteen months, her treatment at the Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania, involved both extended stays in the Philadelphia area, as well as weekly and bi-weekly, outpatient treatment appointments. In order to meet these appointments for treatments, her family incurred considerable travel expenses. Unlike some medical costs, these types of expenses could not be deferred. Elizabeth lost her battle in April of 2011, and Christine Harvell formed Lizzie’s Circle in August of 2011. Harvell explained, “it was so hard to watch Lizzie’s parents try to get through such a difficult time. Their daughter was fighting for her life and they just wanted to be by her side.” Lizzie’s father lost his job and the family fell into a hardship, “this shouldn’t happen because your child is sick,” added Harvell. Lizzie’s Circle is a 501c3, tax exempt organization serving familes residing in Monroe County, who must travel outside the county to seek pediatric oncology treatment. They are the only dedicated resource formed specifically to serve the parents or gurdians of the diagnosed child. They offer assistance for up-front expenses, during treatment, which cannot be deferred. Gas, food, tolls, parking and lodging are some of the up-front expenses the organization covers.

The fourth annual Black and Orange Ball to benefit Lizzie’s Circle will be held on Oct. 27 at Mountain Springs Lake Resort, Reeders. This is a black tie event with costume optional. Tickets are $100.00 and can be purchased at www.LizziesCircle.com.

The first Monroe County Junior Conservation Camp was organized. This provided 30 teenagers from Monroe County with the opportunity to learn about their environment and how to live in harmony with it. With glowing reviews from all those involved, the District staff recommended to its Board of Directors that education be given a high priority among the District’s goals and objectives. Operation began in Summer 1976, following a Spring semester internship program by East Stroudsburg State College Environmental Studies students.

Monroe County Conservation District (MCCD) became the sponsoring agency for Meesing Nature Center (MNC), which at this time was operating from office space provided to the District by the Soil Conservation Service (SCS). MCCD/MNC became charter members of Tannersville Cranberry Bog Preserve Management Committee and clearing house for information and educational/scientific access to preserve.

Program pavilion and corresponding trails were finished on 46 acre purchase and EE programs were designed to utilize this area of the Wildlife Sanctuary.

The official name of the EE Center was changed to the Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center to help with branding efforts and alleviate the confusion with the Kettle Creek property and the Kettle Creek Environmental Fund. It will also be more recognizable to all the school children who attend programs.

Environmental Education contracts established with all four public school districts. Revisions and updates made to Pocono Mountain and East Stroudsburg School District units. Building expansion begun.

Since its humble beginnings in 1976, the Monroe County Environmental Education Center has literally reached hundreds of thousands of people of all ages through its educational programs. Their mission has always remained the same, to educate people about the natural resources of the Pocono area so they are better able to make informed decisions on protecting those resources. The program offerings of the EE Center have been ever-changing and the staff involved over the last 40 years has brought their experience and ideas to the Center and has helped the program evolve to meet the changing world. Programs designed for local school children are the cornerstone of the center’s educational efforts. The EE believes using the natural world as a classroom remains the best method to teach children about their world and instill a lifelong conservation ethic. The hands-on learning activities give children the ability to explore their local environment on a personal level. Throughout the past 40 years, the Center’s name has changed several times. Originally the Meesing Nature Center, it changed to the Monroe County Environmental Education Center and then finally to the Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center in 2014. However, their mission has never changed and they are constantly striving to develop new programs for their core audience. Over the years, the Center has received support and assistance from numerous individuals, groups, and organizations who have shared their dream of a County EE Center for everyone to benefit from and enjoy.

A pilot environmental education program was developed cooperatively by MCCD/ MNC and Pocono Mountain School District titled Project SEARCH, for all 3rd, 4th and 5th Grade Students in Pocono Mountain to participate in natural resources and conservation/environmental education programming at Meesing Nature Center and Tannersville Cranberry Bog Preserve throughout the school year.

A continuation of school programs and an increase in both the number and variety of programs offered yearround. Adult education workshops and programs were begun and the official name of the Center was changed to Meesing Environmental Education Center.

OUR HERITAGE by Ali Schratt

The new Pocono Heritage Center will be located at Mountain View Park in Tannersville. The existing building is currently being renovated to become a multi-purpose venue for educational, cultural, civic, and social events. There will also be dedicated space for the exhibition of documents and memorabilia to illustrate Pocono Township’s rich history as the vibrant residential, business, and touristic location it has been since its settlement, in 1816. While working with Michael Tukeva and Pocono Alliance to bring the Crossing Abilities All-Inclusive Playground to Mountain View Park, in 2014, Charlie Trapasso conceived the idea for the creation of the new Pocono Heritage Center Trapasso fondly recounts her time spent working on the park, “bringing the Crossing Abilities Park to life was a true honor and an achievement that I am quite proud of,” she continues, “now, bringing the Heritage Center to the park, will expand it’s usefulness and provide a sense of pride, place, and history for our community, and that’s the icing on the cake. It gives me an opportunity to once again work on a project that will benefit the community, which is something I strongly believe in. We live in this community; we might as well get involved, meet our neighbors, and work together!” Trapasso explains both the rustic and contemporary beauty of the park and the Poconos will be integrated into the Heritage Center’s architectural design and décor. The Pocono Heritage Center will become the preferred space for activities, such as family celebrations and corporate functions. Trapasso also hopes teachers will bring students to learn about our history and tourists will come to find out what the community is all about. The space will also serve as a polling location, a meeting venue for different groups and the base of operation for the Pocono Jackson Township Historical Society, who will offer free tours of The Learn Legacy Room, the historical repository within the Center. “We’re hoping the community will embrace it as the gathering place for recreational and civic activities, and for special occasions,” says Trapasso. The 2016 Pocono Township Bicentennial Committee and the Historical Society are preparing for the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and the Bicentennial Celebration on November 20th, and all are welcome to come and explore the Center.

Trapasso realizes that the project could not be possible without

the financial support from sponsors and donors. The Farda Family Foundation, Monroe County Commissioners, Pocono Medical Center, Sanofi Pasteur and F/J Hess & Sons are just a few on a long list of supporters. In addition to corporate and individual sponsors, it takes a team to develop and implement a vision. “I’m lucky to be working with a terrific group of people that bring their many talents to this project: on the Bicentennial Committee, María Bonawits, Jennifer Fisher, Tony Farda, Trip Ruvane, Denise Herbert, and Nathan Laubach,” states Trapasso. The members of the board of the Pocono Heritage Foundation, Inc. are Tony Farda, Dawn Wood, Dottie Telesky, and Alex Grum. Trapasso adds, “the members of the Pocono Jackson Township Historical Society have been very generous, providing invaluable help with the historical aspect of the project. Work like this is both fun and rewarding when you have a team of talented, caring and compassionate co-workers by your side.”

How can you get involved? Share the news about the Celebration, donate monetarily, or provide items of historical importance, all of which are genuinely appreciated! Memorial bricks and “Heritage Tree” plaques are available for sale and a wonderful way to display a family legacy name at the Center. 31 years

of the

world

in miniature

For 31 years, history enthusiasts have been visiting the The Toy Soldier Museum to explore Jim Hilestad’s amazing “World in Miniature”. When Hillestad was working for the Chemical Bank in New York City in 1984, his future brother-in-law asked him to attend a toy soldier fair with him at Schuetzen Park in North Bergen, New Jersey. Hillestad admired playing with toy soldiers as a young boy, so he brought a few sets of his collection along with him to the fair. Hillestad looked around and discovered newly made toy soldiers from Trophy Miniatures of Wales Ltd. - and it was love at first sight. Compared to Hillestad’s old figures, these were strong and full of action, and at this moment his immense interest for collecting began to burn again. The Toy Soldier Museum in Cresco, Pennsylvania is where Hillestad makes history come alive. There are 35,000+ toy soldiers throughout the 3,000 square foot museum. These have been placed into scenes of war, celebrations and other monumental historic events. Whether it’s the French and Indian War or the Big Top Circus, Hillestad spends many hours researching each particular event and makes sure the story or diorama he’s creating is historically accurate. Hillestad, an avid military historian who has been featured in many publications, absolutely loves researching each event as well as meeting and talking with like-minded people. “Since starting the museum, I’ve been guided by something once said by John Stuart Mill, ‘That so few now dare to be eccentric marks the chief danger of the time.’ Following my dream has given me experiences and friends I could never have imagined,” Hillestad proudly explains. The time and care it takes to put together these dioramas is astounding and Hillestad’s devotion for his passion has not gone unnoticed. Not only is the Toy Soldier Museum the largest of its kind in the United States, Hillestad’s displays have won many awards and have been showcased at Bloomingdale’s flagship store in Manhattan, the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, the National Civil War Museum and in the Pennsylvania State Capitol Building in Harrisburg. This Fall, The Toy Soldier Museum is having an open house for visitors to come and admire the collection. On October 29th, 2016, from 10am to 4pm, the museum will be open, as well as the surrounding gardens and gazebo, overlooking the Paradise Creek.

STAYPLAY&PRAY at silvery moon guest house by Samm Noviello

For the past two years, Elizabeth Tilley has been transforming the historic property located at Route 209 and Rimrock Road into the Silvery Moon Guest House. Prior to purchasing the property, Tilley was working freelance as an event designer doing creative work for weddings and parties out of her studio and gallery in downtown Ithaca, New York. She had a vision of being able to translate all her talents into one, grand property. Tilley began her search in Ithaca for a place that was part Bed & Breakfast, part retreat and part gallery. The search quickly came up flat. Tilley started looking for a match nationwide and ended in Sciota after she bumped into a man in Ithaca who described the five bedroom guest-house and three outbuildings that make-up the Silvery Moon compound. When she visited the property in the Poconos, she knew it was her fate. Tilley said, “I felt lucky to be able to stay so close to my children, who are in D.C. and upstate New York.” After purchasing the property, Tilley used her love of all things vintage, rolled up her sleeves and got to work. Within the themes of “Stay, Play and Pray,” Silvery Moon Guest House was transformed into the beautiful and whimsical retreat it is today.

STAY. The antique and super-chic Guest House at Silvery Moon was built in 1780. Every room is decorated the way Tilley approaches everything in her life; with an eclectic mix of art and soul , topped off with a little whimsy. The wide-plank, hardwood floors and original hardware are a nod to the historical value of the property; which Tilley explains, “you never know, a contemporary of Marie Antoinette might have also touched that door knob.” Outside the kitchen door is an original hand pump, where guests can get a splash of water to cool their faces off in the sun. Art-filled walls and craft-filled nooks and crannies offer something to explore around every corner in the house and Garden Cottage, which Tilley affectionately named; ‘Fleur de Liz’. Cozy window seats are a sweet spot where guests can sit and admire the garden full of herbs and heirloom varieties of flowers and vegetables. The magical retreat is soul-reviving, creative and peaceful. “No front desk [of any Inn or Villa] is going to greet you with the authentic warmth that I do, and offer the personal love and attention that I give,” Tilley explains from the heart.

20 Local Flair | October/November 2016

PLAY. Originally built in 1780 and used as the town’s one room schoolhouse, The Starry Night School House, is located in the back of the property. Tilley transformed the space into a place to nurture the creative mind and spirit. Tilley explains she just cannot live without room to work on creative projects and, “art and making things is my raison d’etre.” The schoolhouse is decorated with baskets and crates, all organizing and holding every conceivable tool and supply. Visitors can sculpt, paint, knit, draw, write, or do whatever is inspiring them at that moment. “I invite people to join me in the adventure and hope to have more organized classes formed this winter to do that,” says Tilley. She loves to teach and share her love for creating, and she continues to learn from the others around her.

PRAY. The chapel, which was once a place for the community to attend church on Sundays, is now a place for events, celebrations, music and more. Tilley explains the ideal event in the chapel as, “a small celebration for 50 or less, using my collection of vintage, mismatched china and silver, to remember elegant affairs can still be lovely ways to come together and share love and laughter. The acoustics in the chapel are astounding, so for musical events and dancing, it is perfect!” Tilley also wants people to know that, “The Chapel is a place for the spirit to soar and for love to live.” In that, there are no rules, so the chapel is open for praying, yoga, quilting or just relaxing. Whatever the theme, it is fine with Tilley. The historic grounds are filled with a guest house, schoolhouse, chapel and a gardener’s shed, turned into shabby-chic cottage for seasonal yard sales and displays. Tilley continues to plan events at Silvery Moon and customizes the theme, decor and menus for parties, weddings and more. Whether you’re throwing a party, staying the night or just feeling creative, this is a place for peace, soul-searching and the love for all things vintage and fine.

In 2009, Nolan Thevenet was sitting in class at Drexel University, daydreaming about becoming a livestock farmer. In the Spring of 2010, Thevenet moved back home to his family’s land in the Pocono Mountains, to pursue his dream. Thevanet knew the 47 acres of overgrown and unused woodland would be the perfect place to start his farm. He was the only one who truly believed he could make a living as a livestock farmer. Eventually his mother, Nancy Poli, gave him the go-ahead and Thevenet went to work. Stryker Farms off Mountain Road in Saylorsburg was born in 2010 with six pigs, three goats and a few rusty fence posts. Now, Thevenet has about 250 pigs, goats, grass-fed cows, chickens and turkeys. The slaughtering of the animals is done off site, comes back in packages and is placed in the The Stryker Farms Market, which is located on the property. There, customers can buy the meat, some vegetables and even a cookbook on how to prepare goat meat. Other than the market, Thevenet sells meat to two restaurants and stores, mainly in Philadelphia and Stryker Farms also has an online shop where meat can be conveniently ordered.

Not only are the Stryker Farm dogs all natural and gluten free, they taste amazing . Thevenet spends countless hours raising healthy animals, so that customers can feel good about what they’re putting in their bodies. AT HOME

IN OUR COMMUNITY by Ali Schratt

Jill D’Alessandro, Vice President, Patient Care Services Local Flair: What level of care we can expect at St. Luke’s Monroe Campus? Jill D’Alessandro: The St Luke’s Monroe Campus will bring a higher level of health care and provide all the services you would find at a community hospital. This care will be provided by highly skilled professionals delivering excellent customer St. Luke’s University Health Network, the region’s largest and most established health system and one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals, invested more than $80 million to build the new St. Luke’s Monroe Campus. The facility opens its doors October 3, 2016 and will be the first new hospital in Monroe County in 100 years. Located just off Route 611, and close to Route 33 and I-80, St. Luke’s Monroe Campus affords easy access and is within a 30-minute drive of most areas in Monroe County. The four-story hospital features private patient rooms, including 12 beds for critical care patients, a large and efficient emergency room, helipad, state-of-the-art operating rooms, a cardiac catheterization lab, some of the most advanced diagnostic technology and beautifully appointed private patient rooms. In designing this new hospital, St. Luke’s borrowed from the architectural design and success of the Anderson Campus that opened Fall 2011. Nestled in a beautiful, natural setting on 41 acres of land, St. Luke’s Monroe Campus boasts a fountain at its entrance and will soon offer walking trails. Visitors, guests and employees can also enjoy organically-grown produce from the St. Luke’s Rodale Institute Organic Farm. The farm is located at the Anderson Campus. In addition to employing a large number of physicians and advanced practitioners, St. Luke’s also operates St. Luke’s East Stroudsburg Health Center (formerly Pocono MRI), St. Luke’s Heart & Vascular Center, St. Luke’s Women’s Imaging Center and St. Luke’s Laboratory Services. Familiar face in the Emergency Room At the heart of the new St. Luke’s Monroe Campus is the 33-bed Emergency Room. Long-time residents of Monroe County will recognize emergency medicine physician Dr. Peter Favini who returns to the area as the Chief of Emergency Medicine and President of the Medical Staff, St. Luke’s Monroe Campus. “My goal is to provide the best emergency care in the region,” he says. “I spent 25 years providing emergency care in Monroe County and I am thrilled to return to direct the care at this state-of-the-art hospital.” The Emergency Room will be able to treat 60,000 patients a year.

service. St Luke’s is committed to this community and will look at ways to improve the care as we keep the community and people of Monroe our top priority. LF: Tell us a little about your background. JD: I am a graduate of East Stroudsburg University with a degree in Athletic Training and Sports Medicine. I enjoyed a 10 year career as an athletic trainer and was the Head Athletic Trainer with the Stroudsburg Area School District. In 2004, I began my career at St. Luke’s following my enrollment at St. Luke’s School of Nursing to pursue my passion of helping others through a career in nursing. In 2006, I transitioned into a nursing position after graduating from the School of Nursing. In 2008, I was appointed as Clinical Coordinator on a Medical surgical unit at the Bethlehem Campus. In 2011, I was appointed the Patient Care Manager position on that same medical surgical unit. I have successfully led multiple teams and committees who have improved clinical outcomes and increased patient and employee satisfaction. LF: What are you most looking forward to in your new position? JD: I am really excited to begin working side by side with all our new employees and the leadership team. Together, I know we will deliver the highest quality care to the residents of Monroe County. LF: What expectations do you have for the future of Monroe County? JD: Ireally enjoy being a part of developing lasting relationships with area business and community organizations. We will continue to support economic development in the community as our organization grows. I look forward to the new job opportunities and better health care choices that St. Luke’s Monroe Campus will bring to Monroe County. LF: What are a few of your favorite places, activities and events in the Pocono Mountains? JD: There are so many beautiful places to visit and activities in the Pocono Mountain area. I love outdoors and spending time with family and friends. I am always looking for a great deal, and there are so many at the Crossings. Browsing at the Old Engine Works Market, and looking for hidden treasure is another favorite past time. After the hospital opens, I am looking forward to skiing and exploring the area more, with my husband.

Dr. Peter Favini, Chief of Emergency Medicine and President of the Medical Staff, St. Luke’s Monroe Campus Local Flair: Tell us about your background. Dr. Peter Favini: I was born in Scranton. My wife is from Nazareth, we settled in Poconos in 1988 because we always loved hiking here and it was convenient between both places for our parents to visit. I trained in Philadelphia, Temple University for college, and Temple University for medical school and Medical College of Pennsylvania for residency in Emergency Medicine. Laurie and I have four children who grew up here, in the Poconos. I was the Medical Director of the Emergency Department at Pocono Medical Center from 1988 to 2013, when our contract ended. I joined St. Luke’s planning on just being a clinician, but they were interested in my administrative background and strongly encouraged me to continue my work as an administrator. I became the Vice Chair of Emergency Medicine and Chief of Emergency Services at St. Luke’s Anderson in February of 2015. I have worked with many of the area physicians and have seen over 150,000 patients through the emergency Department in Monroe County. I was a natural fit to return to the Poconos. LF: What are you most looking forward to in your new position at St. Luke’s Monroe Campus? PF: I have cared for a large number of patients in the area, so it’s hard to go into a grocery store or a restaurant without seeing someone I have helped. Everything I have given to patients has always come back to me a hundredfold. I also have a great number of friends who are physicians in the area. It will be great to reconnect with them and see the same patients together. St. Luke’s has many provider partners in Monroe County, and those providers encouraged us to build another hospital here that would service their patients. I am excited to return to Monroe. LF: We understand St. Luke’s Monroe Campus will have the capability of treating 60,000 patients in the Emergency Room annually. Can you tell us about your approach to patient/emergency care? What makes St. Luke’s the right choice? PF: I chose emergency medicine because I felt that patients needed a competent and well trained provider at the spot where they needed help most - in an emergency. I felt I could do the most good there in my career and have the greatest impact on the patient’s lives. We have all the science and technology behind our care, but sometimes just being there for a family, holding a hand and understanding the situation can make all the difference. Compassionate care means the world to people, and at St. Luke’s, we understand this, and I am so proud to work in an organization that gets that, and I’m so grateful to be part of the team to provide that care. LF: What are a few of your favorite places, activities and events in the Pocono Mountains? PF: As a family we love the Delaware River and Delaware National Park. Our kids grew up hiking the Water Gap, Pocono Environmental Center and kayaking on the Delaware. Every summer was highlighted with river trips. We try to see eagles, river otters and black bear. We love the Shawnee Inn and frequent it for festivals and special events.

Don Seiple, President, St. Luke’s Monroe Campus Local Flair: When is the exact date for the grand opening? Don Seiple: The ceremonial ribbon cutting event is scheduled for the afternoon of October 13th, but the hospital will be open to patients on October 3rd. LF: What prompted St. Luke’s to build in Monroe county? DS: For over 20 years St. Luke’s has been building relationships in Monroe County. The number of patients we serve has increased over that time, as well. St. Luke’s has more than 40 providers in Monroe County who care for these patients. That growth along with requests from our patients and providers prompted us to consider the possibility of an inpatient hospital in Monroe County. With the strategic vision of our CEO Richard Anderson and our Board of Trustees the decision was made to build the St. Luke’s Monroe Hospital. LF: The St. Luke’s Monroe Campus is slated to bring 350 jobs to the area. Have you been able to successfully recruit from within Monroe County? DS: Yes, the interest in jobs at the hospital has been overwhelming. In June we hosted a local job fair. Our expectation was that 500-700 people would attend. The weekend of the job fair more than 2,700 people attended, we were astounded by the response. LF: What sets St. Luke’s Monroe Campus apart from its competition? DS: Apart from the quality of care we provide, our family of employees is the differentiator. LF: Tell us about the level of care we can expect. DS: St. Luke’s has built a reputation on high quality cost effective medical care. As a network we continue to work together collaboratively with the goal of improving quality and decreasing cost. LF: What do you hope for the future in Monroe County? DS: Our hope and our promise is that St. Luke’s Monroe Campus will become the health care provider of choice in the greater Monroe County area. LF: What are a few favorite activities, places or events in the Pocono Mountains? DS: My daughter and I enjoy skiing in the winter, and my family and I have enjoyed getting to know the area and the local restaurants. For more info visit ChooseStLukesMonroe.org

old stone farmhouse preserving the past

Nestled in the mountains near the Delaware Water Gap, a picturesque property sits high above the banks where Marshall’s Creek and the Broadhead River converge. The historic stone farmhouse built by John George Zimmerman, a prominent pioneer who operated flour mills and conducted trade along the river in the early 1800s, is a link to the past brought back to its period charm by its current owners. The original Carriage House, which no longer stands, was completed in 1823 on the nearly five-and-a-half acre property, while the beautiful fieldstone farmhouse was finished in 1828. During the golden age of silent films, actress Mary Pickford stayed in what is now known as “the Old Stone Farmhouse” while a movie was filmed on location there, making it a regular stop of interest on the old trolley tours. The estate includes the former Post Office of the Water Gap, which lies across the creek from the stone farmhouse, and is now a rental property. Above the creek, the trains once passed, and part of the stone trestle bridge remains. Today the property is a private oasis of country living. As you turn into the winding drive, a wishing well built of original stones from the Carriage House gives a glimpse of the charm ahead. The owners, who bought the historic farmhouse in 2001—there

were multiple offers the first day it went on the market—added the swimming pool and pergola, and also renovated every single room, bringing them back to their original Federal style. The home is very authentic to the period, right down to the reproduction wallpaper selected from a historic collection from Deerfield, Massachusetts. Furnished in period pieces, the four-bedroom farmhouse is warm and inviting, with five fireplaces, two full and two half-baths, original wide-plank wood floors, and every modern convenience, some concealed within the country charm—e.g., dishwasher drawers hidden in an antique cabinet. In addition, the home has a music room, a sunroom overlooking the pool and pergola, a detached garage, and sits amidst majestic trees on a verdant, park-like lawn sloping down to Marshall’s Creek.

The estate is being sold fully furnished, and is listed for $675,000 through Classic Properties. Caroline Salvino, the listing agent, specializes in selling luxury, historic and unique properties. gilroy northeast:

always on track by Ali Schratt

John and Lois Gilroy moved to the Poconos from Manhattan 15 years ago and began their journey of building their formidable landscape design and construction company, Gilroy Northeast, which is located in Tannersville. Both had successful careers in Manhattan. Lois, a coordinating producer who worked on shows like Law and Order with an A-List cast of producers and actors and John, who ran a sccessful company. After 9-11, both reevaluated their situation. The couple agreed it was time to move their young son out of the city for a more laid back lifestyle. “I’m a race car driver, and I had been racing on the area tracks, and we had spent a lot of time in the Poconos already,” explained John. Lois added, “we wanted a simpler lifestyle and then, 9-11 happened and put things into perspective for us. So, The Pocono Mountains has been their permanent home for 15 years now, and the business took off rather quickly.

and replant trees and ultimately not one penny in fines had to be paid. We have an excellent construction team in the office and on site that enables us to have great success with every project.”

“I feel like my skills from my production days come into play everyday,” explained Lois, “we understand that our clients are trusting us with their most valuable possession - their home - and we take that responsibility seriously.” At Gilroy Northeast- you get the whole package. They start with the design process and handle everything from permitting to problem solving, explained John. “One client called on us to help him with a wetland issue that had racked up over $250,000 in fines. We were able to fix the problems

Nicholas Farda, Age 3

Recent photos by Suzie Forrester and David Coulter.

Fall is a great time for reflection; summer is slowing down, and the holiday fray has not yet begun. Here at Farda Landscaping, we’re doing just that. As we approach our 40 th year in business, we’re taking a look back at our humble beginnings, and what we’ve learned about landscaping and excavating since then. Back in 1977, Anthony Farda started pulling weeds and cutting firewood, and out of that, Farda Landscaping was born. Over the years, a lot has changed. Countless professional certifications, acquiring a full fleet of landscaping and excavating equipment, and decades-loyal clients (to whom we are so thankful!), grew what was once a weekend and summer side gig, into one of the most longstanding full service Landscaping and Excavating businesses in the area. However, the core-principles of the company have remained the same; we approach every job, large or small, with an incomparable attention to detail. We firmly believe there are no short cuts to a great landscape, and do things right the first time. The company has stayed small, and that is wholly intentional. Anthony likes to be hands-on, and the right-sized company allows him to be. Additionally, we’re a family-owned and operated business; our employees are like family to us, and our two adult children have taken key roles within the company.

“We approach every job, large or small, with an incomparable attention to detail.” What we’ve learned over the years, is that creating a beautiful landscape requires a few key elements. First, considering the future from the outset is critical– the best landscapes are designed to mature and flourish over time. A sapling will grow into a tree; is it strategically placed to provide shade where needed? Is it planted in an area where its root system can expand without compromising other aspects of your landscape? What will maintaining your landscape entail year-to- year? These are the types of questions we always consider when helping our customers design their dream landscape. Secondly, the best landscapes are timeless and all-season appropriate. A timeless landscape is a landscape you will still love decades from

now. This is achieved using classic landscape-architecture techniques, and landscape features that are sourced from nature with minimal alteration – truly a Farda Landscaping specialty. We feel so fortunate to live and operate in the Pocono Mountains, and our landscapes are reflections of the area’s natural beauty. An all-season landscape is beautiful and comfortable year round. Fall traditionally signifies the approach of winter and less time spent outdoors, but our favorite recent trend in landscaping is 365 outdoor living! Think toasty fire pits and outdoor kitchens – with our unique ability to envision the finished project looking at a blank canvass, we can make your landscape dreams a reality. The right features create a landscape that you can enjoy every day, for all your days. Finally, the best landscapes are constructed from the highest quality materials and sound structure, designed to custom-fit the setting and our customer’s vision. This really combines the principles of future proofing, timeless beauty, and all-season functionality. The materials used and structural design are the foundation that allow a landscape to withstand the test of time, harsh weather, and well-loved use. These principles are the core of our belief in doing things right the first time. A good landscape is a priceless investment that provides a seamless and harmonious blend between indoor and outdoor living. Not only can the right landscape increase your property’s monetary value, it provides an inviting space for friends and family to gather for fellowship and unending treasured moments. Looking back on our last 40 years, we are immensely grateful for the opportunity to serve the greater Poconos community with passion and a commitment to excellence. We look forward to continuing to share our decades of experience in providing beautiful custom landscapes for years to come!

Breast Friends is a unique resource for women, their family, friends, co-workers and the community which works to help minimize the fear and isolation of cancer. For over a decade their programs have empowered thousands with emotional support and hope. They are survivors and professionals helping others celebrate the joy of life. Kelli Mercurio and Vivian Vega Schoch lead the Northeast Pennsylvania Chapter of Breast Friends. They are both survivors and feel grateful they had the support of family and friends through their personal experiences with breast cancer. “Not everyone has the emotional and medical support they need at the scariest time in their life,” says Mercurio. “We are there for them to fill the void and help them navigate through and offer them love, guidance and friendship to help them heal,” Adds Schoch. Breast Friends hosts events and workshops throughout the year. Schoch and Mercurio both agree, “it’s very humbling to know we’ve made such an impact on others lives and we look forward to advocating for women’s Health.”

Survivor Stories by Ali Schratt

ROSEANNE PRICE

ROSEANNE PRICE IS A WIFE AND MOTHER of three grown daughters and she was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 54. Her cancer was Stage 3 and very aggressive. A follow-up mammogram was clear, but 3 months later, she found a lump, and a sterotatic procedure found three undefined tumors - also in the nodes under her arm. She had surgery three days later and she underwent chemotherapy, radiation and a year of Herceptin. “It was a very hard road but one that I was determined to get through. I was having a difficult time dealing with my life as it had changed so much in my eyes. I felt very alone even with family and friends there for me. It was very hard to talk about it to people that didn’t go through it and understand the way another cancer patient does,” explained Price. When she finished all of her treatments, Price felt very sad and very unsure of what life had in store for her. She felt as if she had no one to talk to about her fear. She found Breast Friends after about two years and became involved with their breakfast club. “After attending these meetings I became more of myself again” explained Price, “my family even said they noticed the change. I was losing that feeling of isolation I had carried around with me for such a long time. I found women who had gone through the same experiences and could discuss it openly with each other. There was no judging how you felt about your life, your body or your mindset. It was like an awakening. I am thankful every day for these women coming into my life and I just hope that I too, am helping others through the Breast Friends group.” HOW IS SHE TODAY? Thanks to her family, friends and pink sisters at Breast Friends, Roseanne is enjoying life. She has been cancer free since 2008 when my surgery removed all of the cancer. She is now a grandmother and she is enjoying every moment of it. HER ADVICE FOR OTHERS? Never give up the fight. Everyday there are new developments in the ongoing research to find a cure. Most importantly - do not think you have to fight alone. There are many people out there that want to help others in their journey. Reach out and take hold of the many groups that are available to you, like Breast Friends. They are a great asset to our community. They have been there for so many women and this group allows all of us that have traveled the cancer road to feel that we can also help others through our pain. Most of all they have given us back our lives and we have all built new and everlasting friendships. JENNIFER CHAN JENNIFER CHAN WAS FIRST DIAGNOSED with breast cancer on March 22nd 2013 at the age of 47. She is a single mom to four girls. On August 3rd, she found out the cancer is back and “fighting like a girl” for the second time. “Breast Friends is a place where I can relate to others who have gone through, or is going through, the same fight. We all have something in common. When I feel a certain way, just hearing that someone else has experienced similar thoughts and feelings, puts my mind at ease,” explains Jennifer. HOW IS SHE TODAY? Jenifer is doing great, despite the fears of having to deal with cancer a second time. HER ADVICE FOR OTHERS? My faith is stronger and each day I look for the lesson in my journey and count my blessings. I try to take each moment and enjoy it. Whatever the day is made up of treat it as all important because each moment is special. MANTRA: I worked with a resident who was 97 years old and she gave me a quote which I still use as my mantra today; The PAST is HISTORY, TOMORROW is a MYSTERY, but TODAY is a GIFT that is why it is called the PRESENT.” ~First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt

TAMMY GARDE TAMMY GARDE IS A WIFE, MOTHER OF FOUR AND

GRANDMOTHER to three beautiful granddaughters. After a few “scares”, my breast cancer diagnosis came April 19, 2011 at the age of 45. “My cancer was triple positive, which meant I that I was HER2 positive and my cancer was aggressive. Being HER2 positive was a certain death sentence five years earlier,” explained Tammy. A lumpectomy, followed by 12 months of chemotherapy, and radiation made the year very difficult for her and her family. “Our youngest son was six at the time, and he was afraid to get too close to me, that he would “catch” what I had and have to take the medicine Mommy was taking, explained Garde, “honestly, it is hard to describe all the emotion that comes with diagnosis and treatment.” “The best part about Breast Friends is every woman who is there with you truly knows how you feel. I believe we have our own language. It’s comforting to be with a group of people who know where you’re coming from, what you’ve been through, what your scars look like, “ said Garde. “Kelli and Vivian are incredible leaders for this group. They know what you are thinking and you don’t have to say a word. They can tell if you need a hug or a kick in the butt (I have needed both!).” HOW IS SHE TODAY? Tammy is a group fitness instructor at two local gyms. “It’s empowering to be inspiring and I want each day to count,” says Tammy. She loves spending as much time as possible with our children and grandchildren- “ I truly am blessed with all the beautiful people who surround me.” HER ADVICE FOR OTHERS? Try to remember that going through treatment is temporary! I had to be reminded of that frequently. Also, keep a positive attitude. Having a positive mindset can be the difference between a good day and a great day. Both of those are not always easy but very important. You need to take care of yourself first, which can also be difficult. Do not be afraid to ask for help. Let your neighbor or family member bring you dinner, do the dishes, help the kids with homework. People are happy to help! MANTRA: My quote I am borrowing from a dear friend who lost her own battle with breast cancer November 1, 2015. “Believe”

the comforts of home A Q&A WITH MELISSA LEAR, PRESIDENT BECK ‘N CALL by Ali Schratt

It’s inevitable;

Our parents and loved ones will get older and will need to be cared for. Healthcare and home care can be a complicated system to maneuver around, particularly in cases where decisions might need to be made quickly. Securing additional resources to help pay for care, managing the household and getting services started, along with developing a specific plan of care to meet the needs of a loved one are the highest priorities. We are fortunate to have Beck ‘N Call in the Pocono Mountains to help us take the stress out of in-home care. Melissa Lear, President of Beck ‘N Call sat down with Local Flair to answer a few questions about choosing the right company and her philosophy on care.

WHAT SHOULD WE LOOK FOR IN A FIRST VISIT EVALUATION? AND, HOW WILL I KNOW WHAT LEVEL OF CARE MY LOVED ONE WILL NEED?

The evaluation in your home is one of the most important parts of choosing an in-home care agency. You want to meet some of the people who are in charge. You should expect them to ask some important questions, not to be nosey, but to understand how they can best meet your needs and help you stay at home safely. The evaluation should take about an hour. You should never feel rushed or pressured to end the meeting without all your questions being answered. Speak freely about your needs, expectations and challenges. A few questions I find most help make the decision easier for our clients: •

Is your agency equipped to help me with Specialty Cares Services? Remember, nothing is silly, and every person has unique challenges. Beck ‘N Call handles a wide variety of services including, personal care, bathing, toileting, meals, medications, housekeeping, driving/transportation, pet care, equipment (oxygen, colostomy, feeding tube, etc.) management, socialization, memory exercises, etc.

Do I need a doctor to order these services? No. Non-medical homecare services are an option to help you live at home, and it does not require a physician’s referral.

Is there a difference between one agency and another? Yes, some Agency’s utilize independent contractors as caregivers, which may cause tax obligations for the the client. In this same scenario, it is important to understand if you provider carries insurance. Independent contractor caregivers may not carry the appropriate insurance, and in many cases, the homeowners insurance may not cover injuries sustained by someone you hired to work in your home. Beck ‘N Call does not utilize employees, so we maintain and comply with all tax, payroll, and insurance requirements.

What kind of screening process does your agency have in place for the caregivers? This gives you an opportunity to learn all of the safeguards that are put in place BEFORE you invite someone into your home.

Fortunately, Beck ‘N Call has found multiple ways to make this process as easy as possible. After the evaluation, Beck ‘N Call will put together a plan based on the information gathered from loved ones, doctors and

54 Local Flair | October/November 2016

anyone else important to the client’s care. All parties will agree upon the plan before moving forward. It’s not always easy, but usually not impossible to find a good solution to any problem a client has. TELL US ABOUT A PARTICULAR CASE OR CLIENT THAT MADE A BIG IMPACT ON YOU.

Simply put, I have too many! Some were super challenging and some were incredibly sad. I think one of the most unique situations over the years was having the opportunity to provide care to a husband for many years. After he passed, we continued to provide care to his wife. It seemed like we continued to go to this home for years and years, because we did. One of my favorite moments was when a customer called me on the phone. He asked me, “If you aren’t too busy, would you have dinner with me?” It was his birthday. It melted my heart, and from that moment on, we built a wonderful friendship. WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF OWNING BECK ‘N CALL?

The rewarding part is not in the ownership. The reward is simply being part of a big, big team. Caregivers, nurses, and office staff each have a valuable role in caring for our clients.

This was a post to Facebook we made a month ago - and it truly sums up the feelings I have for my work. Taking a few moments...Sitting in silence...Thinking of all the beautiful “works of art” that I have had the good fortune to meet in the last 20 years. There is no doubt that we have had the good fortune to see many clients become our friends over the years. So many families felt we did so much and still we wished we could do more. There is an incredible sense of pride in knowing that you are part of a person’s life at such a difficult time; that you are part of the plan to let someone live out all the days of their life in the comfort of their home. This is the rewarding part. This is the goal the entire team works toward.

Beck ‘N Call specializes in coordinating care for elderly and disabled individuals throughout Monroe, Northampton and areas in Pike County - including the towns of East Stroudsburg, Delaware Water Gap, Marshall’s Creek, Roseto, Brodheadsville, Mount Pocono, Tobyhanna, Gilbert, Nazareth, Wind Gap, Stockertown, Canadensis and their surrounding areas.

VALUABLE ASSETS from the DAMAGING toll of

litigation

how C ol l a b or at i v e D i vorc e He l p s Through a skilled, neutral expert – retained jointly, Collaborative Law is a refreshing alternative to the litigation model, in which each side gets their “hired gun” to testify and the court has to decide. We’re not motivated by trying to ‘get more’ for their client - we’re motivated to work toward getting the most for everyone involved. Through transparency, good faith and in a mutually respectful manner, all parties involved will decide the value of combined assets (i.e. family business or retirement assets) and how to divide them in a way that everyone agrees upon. Collaborative Divorce goes beyond just winning.

1. TAKE AN ACCOUNTING OF YOUR ASSETS. Often people know if they have a pension, but are less familiar about the details of their plan and the future benefit elections to protect themselves or their spouse/significant other. They know they have a mortgage, but could not tell you what interest rate they are paying or when it will be paid off. They do not know how much they can add to their 401K or if, and how much, their company would match. I suggest you do the work, or work with a professional, and make a list of your assets and learn the details of every one. Interest rates, penalties, important dates and potential earnings/losses - make this list and review it monthly. 2. GET RID OF DEBT AND QUESTION YOUR RATES. One of the most common complaints I hear is having a lack of money to save because of having too much debt. A lot of times, people do not even realize how much they are paying for something. I recently had enough of the continuous rate increases on my home and auto insurance. I first went back to my agent and requested that we review my policies. When I did not get a response from my agent, I contacted another for his opinion on my coverage and I was pleasantly surprised by his findings. So, I changed agents and I am currently saving $4,800.00 a year on all my insurances. For the longest time, I neglected to really study my phone bill. What used to be $425.00+ per month, came down to $380.00 after a quick visit to Verizon. They made me aware that we were continuously exceeding our plan and needed to switch to something better. A few of these small “expense awareness” savings add up monthly and this money can be redirected to either savings or debt reduction, without affecting your current monthly cash flow. 3. SET GOALS. Clients tend to have vague goals, ie: I want to retire or, I want to send my kids to college being the most common. There are so many essential pieces that need to be figured out before you can begin to put together your financial puzzle. When do you want to retire? How much money will you need to make sure you can maintain your lifestyle? What college will your children attend? What is that lifestyle? Will you travel, downsize or move somewhere warmer? How much will college cost? You cannot make plans and reach goals if you don’t know the specifics of what you want. Spend some time to dream about what you want your future to look like and put it on paper. From there, with the help of a Financial Advisor, you can find the magic number and how long it will take to attain it. To read more go to www.flairmag.com/wsandm-cleanhouse

Bob gets results when others can’t. See what customers are saying:

“We highly recommend Bob Kelly if you are looking to sell or purchase a home. We hired Bob to sell our home mid-January 2016 after being on the market with another Realtor for 9 months. To our amazement, he sold our home in 6 weeks! Bob is professional, honest and a very hard worker. His marketing techniques just blew us away. So listen everyone – if you are looking to sell or looking to buy a home, call the ‘Best’ in the area. His name is ‘Bob Kelly.’ He has made our dream come true and he can make yours too.” -Former Client “I have worked with many realtors in many regions, and Bob is among the very best and the most impressive that I know when he listed and sold our house recently. He provided valuable advice on renovations & upgrades that buyers would be looking for. Bob has a low key and relaxed manner, but do not let that fool you. He is probably one of the hardest working realtors out there. Finally, Bob is very detailed oriented, always very patient, and (without saying) very knowledgeable. You will be in good hands when you hire Bob.” -Former Client
