T
he bright pop of flowers against white lace. A loving glance shared between bride and groom. A ceremony sealed with a kiss. All important little details that define the memories of any wedding day, and when captured in photos have the power to transport you back to that special time. Just ask professional photographer, Carol McDonald and she will tell you, “what appeals to me most about photography is the story behind the image. It is a moment captured in time.” Though native to Scranton, McDonald has spent most of her adult life traveling to exotic places with her Irish-born husband, Mick. Calling places like Mombasa, Kenya; Darwin, Australia and Honolulu, Hawaii home over the years has allowed McDonald to capture everything from safari camps to Hawaiian beaches. “My career began very unconventionally as a photographer’s assistant in Kenya,” said McDonald. “I started shooting professional commercial work while in Hawaii, the wedding photography came along not much after.” Now shooting professionally for over ten years, McDonald’s interest in weddings began when she photographed a friend’s wedding in Honolulu. “I really fell in love with the freedom of expression I found in photography and the atmosphere of weddings,” she said. Since returning to Northeast Pa. three years ago to raise her young son near family, McDonald has used her eye for detail and photojournalistic style to bring breathtaking images to happy couples here in the Poconos. “My style has a strong sense of storytelling from the details, the portraits and the moments,” McDonald claims.

One look at McDonald’s online portfolio, and her inherent talent for photographic storytelling becomes very evident. In McDonald’s images not only are details and moments captured beautifully, but the different personalities of each couple defined and celebrated. In order to make the creative process easier on both McDonald and the couples, she offers a free engagement session to any couples who book a wedding photography package. “It’s a great way to get to know one another, get them comfortable in front of the camera and find out what photo style they like,” explained McDonald. For couples still in the planning process, McDonald suggests looking into your photography options one year to 18 months in advance of the wedding date. By doing so you ensure the best selection of top notch professionals. Though no wedding day goes perfectly as planned, a great photographer will work with the moments they are given. “As a photographer I believe it is my responsibility to stay positive and get beautiful images, no matter what the scenario,” stated McDonald, “I will go out of my way to make a couple happy and to get the shot.” Words of a true professional, dedicated to the mastery of her art. 6 To get a glimpse of Carol McDonald’s entrancing imagery visit her professional portfolio online at carolphoto.com. by Heather Hanson photos by Carol McDonald

dutch hill preserves P
erhaps you chose the Poconos as the location of your wedding because of the beautiful landscape and lovely venues, or perhaps it is the place you call home. Whatever the reason, the Pocono Mountains certainly have a lot to offer happy couples on their way to the alter. Though you may have a slew of local businesses working on the details of the big day, you may not have considered incorporating the handy work of local craftsmen into your special day. By including one or a few of these quality local products into your wedding, you not only benefit from unique, standout touches but support the local community in a big way. 6
Agriculture is a big part of both Pennsylvania history and life today. Celebrate the local bounty by sending your guests home with a delicious jar of locally made jam or honey. To add a bit of interest and personality to the favor, adorn them in wedding coordinated ribbons with a personalized tag. summer kitchen soaps Another way to send guests home happy is by offering up a sweet, scrubby treat like locally made bath & body products. Revitalizing the Past and Celebrating the Future of La Anna Chapel
P
icturesque La Anna Chapel proudly sits atop a grassy knoll at the intersection of Routes 191 and 423 in South Sterling, Pa. A building so alluring and reminiscent of the past, that it beckons artists to preserve its history and wonderment through the changes of time as reflected in old photos, drawings, paintings and greeting cards. La Anna Chapel is most recently expressed in a watercolor of a snowy, starry night scene with a couple snuggled up in a horse drawn carriage by artist, John James. The church was originally commissioned in the early 1900’s by a local woman, and then constructed in the architectural Arts and Craft style characteristic of the times. Local men, who were obvious artists in their craft, erected columns twenty feet high of local river rocks that serve as the structural pillars for the exterior walls of dark chocolate brown cedar shakes framing the stained glass windows. Surrounded by majestic trees and flowing meadows, this quaint place of worship constructed of wood and stone opened its doors to receive local parishioners, serving as a beacon of hope for the surrounding community. Later, in 1922 the popular country chapel was purchased by the Catholic Church and called St. Mary Magdalene. Many of the local residents recall their weddings in this magnificent church. Some were part of the congregation and others were visitors who had chosen the church to serve as the place to host one of life’s special events. Visitors, vacationers and tourists were often found worshipping in this lovely country church. The deteriorating church was sold in 2007 after being vacant for over 15 years. Its new owner wanted to preserve the historical building to its original status once again. It is now ready to greet the community of La Anna, all those who live in the Pocono Mountain region, its friends, tourists and visitors. Expect to share in times past when you walk through the golden doors and enter the chapel. The exposed river rock pillars support creamy vanilla walls and an arched ceiling over the alter area. Exquisitely crafted Austrian hand paintings adorn translucent red, blue, gold, green and pink stained glass windows of yesteryear, and cast warm sunbeams of color throughout the church. All details including the warm touches of wood throughout the building are reminiscent of the Arts and Craft period. The patina earned over time renders this building a priceless example of days gone by that may be shared and enjoyed by many who are looking for a unique church with an irresistible draw. La Anna Chapel has opened its doors to those who want to create lasting memories at this inspirational place of joy. Each season has its own look. The winter white snow compliments the chocolate walls. The spring greens draw a burgundy color from the brown walls providing vivid contrast. The autumn reds and yellows blend with the church completing a bouquet of fall colors, and the summer goldenrod flowers are a delight against the church. Come join us in this all season church and be part of the long, historical tradition of celebratory events as we revitalize the past to help celebrate the future at La Anna Chapel. W
ith over 60 years experience dressing blushing brides for the big day, the largest selection of designer wedding gowns in the world and their own TLC show, ‘Say Yes to the Dress,’ Kleinfeld Manhattan may be the most recognized name in bridal fashion. And with their world-renowned, 30,000 square foot storefront only a 1.5 hour drive from Northeast Pa., it would be hard not to ask their professional opinion on one of the most glamorous details of the wedding day. Local Flair was fortunate to get the scoop on all things frilly and fabulous from gown guru herself, Mara Urshel, Co-Owner of Kleinfeld Manhattan. Keep these tips in mind as you surf the web and venture to the bridal boutique, and be sure to check out just a handful of the dreamy dress selection at Kleinfeld Manhattan on the following pages.
Local Flair - Given the remarkably staggering selection of wedding gowns found at Kleinfeld how does the journey to wedding dress bliss begin for a bride to be? Urshel - We suggest brides start their gown search by browsing bridal magazines, our website, kleinfeldbridal.com, and other online resources.

It is best that they know the venue and the wedding style they wish to portray on their wedding day. This will help dictate the type of gowns to show them. It also helps if they understand what shape they want - a-line, ball gown, mermaid, sheath, etc. However, our trained bridal consultants will spend time with them during the appointment asking them questions that lead them towards the perfect dress for them. We suggest they bring in photos of gowns they like and their “top 5” from our website to give the consultant a good idea of what they are looking for. Once the gown is picked out and their dress arrives, we suggest having the undergarments and shoes you plan on wearing the day of the wedding so we can properly fit the gown. We also sell shoes and undergarments , which the bride’s fitter will help chose the best undergarment for the dress.
LF- Why is it important for brides to get help from wedding professionals when selecting a gown? Urshel- It is important that trained consultants guide them toward the perfect dress for their body type, time of wedding (day or night), style of wedding (black tie, informal, or garden wedding) and venue. If they are getting married in St. Patrick’s Cathedral and a grand ballroom
photos courtesy of Kleinfeld Manhattan
such as Gotham Hall, we would suggest the appropriate dress so that she stands out in the crowd and doesn’t get lost wearing a basic sheath gown. We have over 1000 samples to choose from, which can be very overwhelming for the bride! Our professional staff has many years of experience combined with weekly training that gives them knowledge on the new dresses we receive every day from various markets across the globe.
LF- Have you noticed any changes in gown trends in recent years? Urshel- Strapless is still the number one neckline, it is most flattering and does not restrain mobility like an off the shoulder gown may. Through the years gowns have become more contemporary, designers have become inspired by red carpet celebrity gowns. Color has become more common. We sell mostly shades of ivory, champagne and blush as opposed to your traditional white. Some trends for 2010 include: Texture and 3D embellishments, lighter fabrics such as tulle and organza, “bling”, bolero’s/cover-ups, and belts.
Urshel- There are no longer rules in bridal! It is most important to let your personality shine through, but you also don’t want to look at your wedding photos years from now and say, “what was I thinking?”.
LF- What about accessories? Recent trends, is less more or should brides go all out? Urshel- Some recent trends in accessories include French netted bird cage veils and headbands, tiara’s are less common now. As a general rule, the accessory should not take away from the dress.
LF- Above all else, what is the best advice you can give to brides when they are picking their gown? Urshel- Create a budget for your dress and be honest with your consultant so she does not show you a dress you fall in love with but can’t afford. Again, make sure it is appropriate for the venue, time of day and formality of the wedding. 6
LF- In your opinion, what can be said about trendy vs. timeless gown looks? Any “rules” on the subject? Local Flair Wedding

Gown Shopping Tips from Mara Urshel, Co-Owner, Kleinfeld Manhattan: research Start looking for gowns in magazines and websites and bring the photos to your appointment, it will give your bridal consultant a general idea of the kind of dress you like: traditional, straight, empire, princess ball gown, etc.
plan Make sure you have enough time. It can take 6-12 months to order a designer bridal gown. “It’ll take anywhere from nine months to 12 months to order your dress,” says Urshel. “Sometimes six months is OK, but in that case you will be limiting some of the dresses that can be available to you.”
budget Know your budget. A lot people forget that they have to pay for alterations, a headpiece, a veil and undergarments. There are a lot of extras and sometimes those extras can add up to more than the gown.
what to bring Do not bring an army of friends and relatives to your bridal gown appointment. Bring along one or two trusted partners - your mom, a close friend, etc. - for a second opinion. Make sure you bring people you can trust and that you select a dress that works for you – not for them.
open mind Keep an open mind, listen to the consultant, and try on gowns she suggests. Gowns don’t always look as good on the hanger as they do on the body. Try on as many styles as you can. “Do it; try everything. This is your chance to try on all the dresses in the world and any salon should take the time to work with you to make sure you are happy.”
what to wear Wear appropriate undergarments, you will be undressing in front of a sales consultant you never met before. You may also want to wear a strapless bra or the salon may have samples for you to use.
trust your instincts You’ll know it’s “the one.” If you have to be reassured that the gown looks great on you, it's probably not “the one.” Is this how you pictured yourself looking as a bride? Does the gown suit your personality? Are you comfortable enough in it to enjoy your wedding day?

It often has the power to sum up emotions we cannot express in words. And perhaps, more than any other detail of your wedding day, music can set the mood of the event from beginning to end. Which is why picking the right music professional to accompany your vows or strum out your first dance is up there with finding the prettiest dress and a knockout venue. Depending on the type of occasion you envision the big day to be, one or a few of the following options might be music to your ears.
Disc Jockey services are a popular choice for many couples because of their mass appeal and large music selection. With music libraries that include thousands of songs, a DJ is a great reception choice when you have a large number of guests that may have differences in musical taste. Often acting as the Master of Ceremonies during the reception, a professional DJ knows how to keep guests dancing and the event moving. To expand their repertoire and make your event even more spectacular, many DJs now offer special lighting and effects that add excitement to the dance floor. The music professionals at Pure Mix DJs, located in Stroudsburg, offer state of the art equipment, professionalism and expertise that will make your special event a party to remember. Learn more by visiting them online at puremixdjs.com or by giving them a call at 570.369.4931. If you’re a couple that dances to the beat of a different drum a live band or solo musician may be a great addition to both your ceremony and reception. This is especially true if you have a favorite local band or style of music that fits the mood and theme of your wedding day. Keep in mind that live musicians usually require more time to set up, but the entertainment factor is worth it. When selecting a live band for your wedding it is also important to remember that they may not know every “top 40 hit,” but are often willing to learn special songs you are interested in. Some Pocono favorites that have played many local events are the Jim Roberti Band and the Maybabies. Dependant on your venue size or budget, you can book Jim Roberti as a solo artist or with one or both of his band mates. Check them out and learn more at jimrobertiband.com. If your wedding day is shaping up to be a grand soiree, the beautiful elegance provided by a classic instrument ensemble may be for you. Whether a black tie event or a day that incorporates a vintage feel, a solo musician or string quartet fit the bill for the ceremony and reception. Given the years of practice that go into mastering an instrument, these musicians often possess a wide knowledge of varied musical compositions to set the ambiance. Many of these musical groups can also incorporate traditional music from a variety of cultures, a nice addition if you are paying homage to your family roots. Local classical trio, Calliope, has added their elegant sound to many local events and can be found online at classicaltriocalliope.com. Try researching local string quartets including music samples of their performances on gigmasters.com.

ew things in life are as memorable as a wedding. Something to keep in mind as you plan the picture-perfect details of the big day. Anyone who has planned a wedding knows, there are some hurdles to clear leading up to the “you may kiss the bride” moment. An often overlooked yet extremely important detail of any wedding is the transportation. Claiming to take the stress out of this aspect is Pocono Limousine. But, being a skeptic first and believer second, I wanted to dig deeper into the company and its services. So I approached writing this article as if I was about to get married. For me, as it is with many people, “the devil is in the details” when it comes to a business like this. It’s those special value-added aspects that set a company apart. And I wanted to see if this company could impress me with their details. I caught up with Lisa Ambrose of Pocono Limousine and put her to the test. She told me they often coordinate the accessories inside the vehicle to match the client’s wedding colors. Looking for VIP treatment? They will roll out red carpet from the vehicle door to the entrance upon arrival. Upon exiting the ceremony, your driver will be there to greet each of you with a flute of champagne. “What about my guests?”, I asked. Lisa said they provide shuttle services for the client’s guests from the hotels to the venue site. Fair enough. Next up, I wanted to learn about the vehicles they offer. Their finest is probably the 2008 Expedition limo which seats 12 comfortably. Inside, there are DVD players, 5 LCD televisions, 3 bars, leather seating and a privacy divider. Not too shabby. The company also has a classic stretch limo with 6-8 passenger seating, DVD and CD players, and 3 televisions from 13 to 17 inches. Lastly, the “LimoCoach.” This vehicle holds 14 people and offers over 6 feet of headroom along with all the other bells and whistles. And to ensure that everything is picture perfect about your Pocono Limo experience, the chauffeur will always be in full tuxedo. Sounds good so far, but I had one more question on my mind. I basically said, “Convince me that you’re a reputable business and that my wife, guests and I will be safe.” Pocono Limo is fully registered and insured, as I expected. But I didn’t expect their hiring processes to be so thorough. All of their chauffeurs are subject to background screening, Megan’s Law clearances and of course, drug testing. They all have clean motor vehicle records and are experienced in wedding services. Impressive, to say the least. After doing my research, I came to my conclusion. In business for over 20 years, this company has perfected its craft. If I was actually getting married, I would have one less thing to worry about thanks to Pocono Limousine. Make sure you book only the best for your special day, check out Pocono Limousine online at poconolimousine.com or give them a call at 570.839.2111. 6 by Brent Postal

Amanda and Jason had known each other for several years, both involved in separate relationships, often leaning on each other, as friends. Their sisters tested their matchmaking skills in 2002 by trying to set the two up, but the timing was off. In 2006, after spending some time in Indianapolis, Amanda decided to move back east. Jason being the good friend that he was offered to take her out for a day of fun in Philadelphia. Amanda gleefully reminisced about telling her mom that night, “Jason is the man I am going to spend the rest of my life with.” In December 2007, Jason selected an exquisite restaurant as the stage of his proposal and the couple became engaged. As the wedding planning began, the couple knew exactly where they wanted to share their special day. Woodloch Pines always held a special place in both Jason and Amanda’s hearts. For Jason, growing up only 45 minutes from Woodloch meant a familiar place that was close to home for his friends and relatives. Amanda cherished memories of her childhood vacationing there with her family, golfing, and eventually even working at the resort. They both loved the location for its friendly and family-oriented staff. The decision to wed at Woodloch was made easy by the resort’s pristine natural surroundings and abundance of exceptional activities. The Notos were left with beautiful memories, captured both in pictures and in their hearts. The couple exchanged their vows at the Nativity of Our Lord Church in Scranton, Pa., and kicked off their reception at Woodloch. The lakeside dining room, adorned with a lavish chandelier, was just the beginning of the beauty Amanda and Jason were able to share with their guests. Woodloch accommodated and personalized their needs for a beautiful fall wedding, with chocolate and champagne as the main accenting colors. As the guests entered the reception area, they were greeted with tiered cream-colored candles and a beautifully lit champagne tower. The entrance and walls were draped 22

with a matching chiffon material, creating the perfect rustic elegance the Notos had envisioned. Jay Marist McClinton, from A Raisin in the Sun Photography, captured the visuals with elegance and personal touches. The cocktail hour featured a raw bar, complete with oysters, shrimp and crab legs, topped off with a vodka luge and assorted sushi. Additional appetizers included cheese and vegetable crudités, assorted breads and an extensive antipasti spread. Woodloch continued to capture the rustic elegance of the night with an authentic, autumn themed meal. The first course, Mediterranean greens with candied pecans and berries, was followed with a delicious dish of pumpkin ravioli. The main course featured herb encrusted salmon or filet mignon. The happy couple spent the night dancing with their guests and enjoyed a wedding cake ceremony complete with an additional display of Amanda’s two favorite desserts, chocolate covered strawberries and chocolate chip cookies. To wrap up the night, Woodloch rolled out a candy bar, featuring giant glass containers filled with white and dark chocolates. The guests happily filled bags of the treats as sweet parting gifts from a wonderfully romantic evening. After their blissful wedding day and remarkable honeymoon in Cabo San Lucas, the couple decided to move to Boston to pursue their careers. They are living happily in Boston, Jason working in pharmaceutical marketing and Amanda as an event planner for Massachusetts General Hospital. The Notos are delighted to share their story with the Local Flair community. 6 Woodloch Resort is a premier wedding venue located in Hawley, Pa. our day Laura & Michael
November 14, 2009 | Famularo Weddings & Banquets
When Laura Rauh, 24, first met Michael McMann, 30, neither one had any idea they had just found their other half. Eventually, their friendship of several years grew into something more. They had their first date at Everybody’s Café in Downtown Stroudsburg and a few years later found themselves there again with friends and family for their rehearsal dinner. In November of 2007, Laura and Michael were engaged. A few weeks later, Mike had to leave for Fort Bragg in North Carolina, as part of his training for the Army, and in February he was on a plane headed for Afghanistan. After being apart for a year, the couple kicked their planning into high gear. Their separation inspired them to use their wedding day to celebrate their love and life with close friends and family. Married on November 14 th, 2009, the cool autumn day was warmed with flower arrangements of reds, orange and purple, by florist Linda Stone of Bender Gardens. Bridesmaids wore Victorian lilac dresses with platinum piping to match the groomsmen’s paisley vests. Growing up as a member of Saint John’s Lutheran Church, Laura knew it was the only place to hold their ceremony. The aisle was lined with white bows, accented with ribbons and purple flowers as Laura’s father, John, walked her to the alter. She wore a dress by Alfred Angelo with an intricate castillion train and carried a hand-tied bouquet of roses, gerbera daisies and statice. The couple was pronounced husband and wife by Gail Kees, a friend of the family for over fifteen years. The newlyweds and their guests wrapped up the celebration at Famularo Weddings & Banquets located in Mount Pocono. Laura previously worked with owner Frank Famularo and many of the employees, which added a personal touch to their special day. With help from Famularo’s on-site wedding coordinator the couple’s reception details, including everything from the DJ and wedding cake to the full open bar and champagne toast, were taken care of. Music filled the air as guests arrived for a cocktail hour followed by an intimate dinner. Hurricane globes with candles assembled by the bride’s mother, Theresa, served as the centerpiece of each table. For dinner, guests had their choice of stuffed chicken breast, sliced tenderloin of beef or flounder in a garlic-herb sauce. The six tier cake was decorated with designs from the couple’s wedding invitations and topped with figurines of Kermit and Miss Piggy, which were the couple’s nick-names growing up. When the night was over, guests received sugar cookies tied with a purple ribbon holding a heart-shaped cookie cutter and a recipe, which the bride used to personally bake each cookie for her guests earlier that week. 6 Famularo Weddings & Banquets has been offering happy couples all-inclusive wedding packages in the beautiful Pocono Mountains for over 20 years. Amanda & David
August 1, 2009 | Ehrhardt’s Waterfront Resort
“I thought he was cute,” said Amanda as she reminisced about her first meetings with David Kuhn while attending Dickinson College, “he would wear dress shirts to the cafeteria because he thought I liked that kind of thing,” she giggled. First meeting in 2003 through a friend that knew Dave from ROTC, it didn’t take long for the pair to become close. Though, as often is the case in love, the couple faced some trials before reaching their ‘I Do’ moment. In 2004, upon graduation from college, Dave began active military duty and was soon deployed to Korea for 12 months and then shortly after deployed to Iraq for another 12 months. During this time Amanda was still finishing her college degree and anxiously awaited Dave’s return. “It took the time we were apart to make us realize how much we really wanted to be together,” said Amanda. In the summer of 2009, when Dave finalized his military obligations, the young couple made the decision to return to Amanda’s hometown in the Poconos from their current residence in Fort Hood, Texas. “I was homesick,” professed Amanda, “we decided that our wedding day should be a celebration of Dave returning home, for good, and we wanted it to be a big party for all the friends and family that had supported us through the years.” On August 1 st, 2009 Amanda Kuchinski and David Kuhn celebrated their friends and family, and the wonderful memories that they all shared. The couple held a beautiful ceremony guided by celebrant, Lois Heckman, and reception on the shores of Lake Wallenpaupack at Ehrhardt’s Waterfront Resort. For Amanda the venue choice was easy, “ My parents have been dining at Ehrhardt’s for years and they love it!” she exclaimed. “It just seemed like a place that had both a pretty location and the friendly atmosphere I wanted for my wedding.” Playing off the water’s edge locale, Amanda, with help from local florist Julie Neiring, incorporated tranquil shades of blue and pops of pink into the outdoor ceremony. “I know nothing about flowers,” stated Amanda, “but I told Julie the colors I liked and she was able to create flower arrangements more beautiful than I 26

could have ever imagined.” The beauty of the day was captured by Jenn DelGrosso and Marcy Behr, of Forever Photography. To show their guests further thanks and appreciation, the event’s reception was adorned with flower centerpieces, grown by Amanda’s mother, that showcased photographs of each and every guest. A delicious cake from Community Bake Shoppe of Scranton also celebrated Dave and Amanda’s memories and showcased black and white images of the couple’s time together. “The cake was so good we didn’t even have a chance to save the top!” exclaimed Amanda of the sweet confection. The fun-loving pair danced the night away with their family and friends to a musical mix by Chuck Seese, of 93.5 morning DJ fame. “Both Dave and I felt that the music could make or break the reception, and Chuck was absolutely wonderful and easy to work with,” said Amanda. One of Amanda’s favorite moments of the day came with the father/daughter dance. As Amanda, a selfproclaimed “daddy’s girl,” twirled across the floor with her father, her mother and brother ended up joining in. “It became a family dance,” she said with a smile, “I am really close with my family, so it was a great moment for me.” As the joyous occasion wrapped up, Amanda and Dave sent their guests home with a token pint glass, the photos of memories past and newly made memories of the happy newlyweds. 6 Ehrhardt’s Waterfront Resort is located at the beautiful edge of Lake Wallenpaupack in Hawley, Pa.
