LOS ANGELES MASTER CHORALE Lagrime di San Pietro Through the visionary mind of director Peter Sellars, 21 singers transform Renaissance composer Orlando di Lasso’s final work into a powerful, theatrically staged a capella performance. Led by Artistic Director Grant Gershon, the Los Angeles Master Chorale is widely recognized as one of the country’s leading professional choirs. Lagrime di San Pietro (Tears of St. Peter) represents the culmination of the Belgian composer’s skill, and of Renaissance polyphony. Be prepared for one of the single most moving performances you will ever experience! Underwritten by Robin Black; Elaine & Michael Brown; Ann Murphy Daily & William Daily

year is one of New Mexico’s beloved roles—from the International Folk Art Market, where the headdresses of African artisans who have crossed an ocean to show their local treasures mingle with dusty cowboy hats, to the Traditional Spanish Market, where it’s more a matter of, “Ooh, I inherited a piece just like this from my Grandma,” to the nation’s largest Native American Indian Arts Market, held now for nearly 100 years in our historic Downtown Plaza. And then there’s September, in which we stuff a 50-foot-high marionette affectionately called Zozobra with our hopes and dreams. (And then we set him ablaze chanting “Burn him, burn him,”— and our glooms become ash.) And later that month, we become just as rowdy, but about wine. The venerable Santa Fe Wine & Chile Fiesta attracts 90 national wineries that partner with 75 of our finest restaurants to put on a five-day fiesta nonpareil. Come October, the brilliant blue skies over Albuquerque fill with hot-air balloons from all over the world for the International Balloon Fiesta, drawing some 100,000 spectators each day to the launch field and the breathtaking “Mass Ascensions.” But seldom do we get to host a gathering of culinary professionals from around the country—professionals whose passion and trade call them to track the hoteliers and restaurateurs who are true trendsetters, the chefs who are the tastemakers for the next generation of culinarians, and front-line activists fighting for food security and safety. They are themselves publishers, editors, writers, photographers, bloggers, television personalities, socialmedia experts and industry activists. Santa Fe and Local Flavor Magazine say ¡Bienvenidos! to the International Association of Culinary Professionals. Santa Fe, where we are blessed to be home to 400 restaurants, dozens of James Beard Award nominations, finalist determinations and winners; where at least a handful of cultures have germinated food sensibilities that are still basic to our growing conditions and innovative to the palate; where traditions are steeped and carried on; where the chile is red or it’s green, but you should always ask which one is hotter and choose accordingly; where people care about the food they eat and suggest others do the same; where Fodor’s Travel writes, “Santa Fe’s culinary reputation continues to grow not just in terms of restaurants but also in businesses that produce or sell specialty foods and beverages, from fine chocolates and local honeys and jams to increasingly acclaimed New Mexico wines, beers, and spirits. Don’t miss Santa Fe Farmers’ Market, one of the best in the Southwest.” So, why is there a trout fisherwoman on our cover this month and not 100 welcoming chefs? May is the month when we pay homage to our great outdoors, and it’s the month when our rivers are really running. It’s also how we define true Local Flavor at our tables. In New Mexico, we like to know exactly where our supper comes from, and we love to catch it ourselves. And if your heart is with ‘catch and release’ At Wine & Chile Chef Shoot with James Beard Award Best Chef of the we do it for the pure joy of being in our great outdoors. Southwest, 2005, Mark Kiffin.
New Mexico’s mid-century modern art and design icons Alexander Girard, Lloyd Kiva New (Cherokee), and Georgia O’Keeffe influenced Santa Fe’s textile, fashion, and visual art landscape. Explore their contributions through exciting summer exhibitions and programs. Mid-Century Santa Fe includes Alexander Girard: A Designer’s Universe (from Vitra Design Museum) at the Museum of International Folk Art, Action/Abstraction Redefined at the IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts, and a series of community events and lectures hosted by the O’Keeffe Museum.
