Summer’s finally here. I’ve been looking forward to my few weeks away from magazining (is that even a word?) and the dreaded deadlines. I’ll be busy though, our strawberries and blackcurrants look like they might produce a bumper crop this year so I’ll be making lots of jam. Focus on Movies

By Peter Stevenson

AT THE CINEMA: X-Men Days of Future Past 12A (131 mins) Can someone explain to me this seemingly never ending hunger the general public seems to have for superhero movies? First we had a trilogy of the X-Men, then a Wolverine spin-off and finally, a retrospective montage in First Class. Now, all sorts of plot holes are filled, loose ends tied up and fun to be had with time travel as Days of Future Past comes to cinemas. It is the year 2023 and mutants have been relentlessly wiped out. Pushed to desperation, the few mutants left, including Professor X, decide to take action – Wolverine is therefore sent back in time to kill a scientist who has developed a fool-proof means by which mutants can be hunted down and destroyed. Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Ian McKellan (Magneto) and Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) take the acting helm once more. Stewart and McKellan are as professional as expected, giving real gravitas to roles which could easily be ludicrous. Jackman is the only character to traverse the temporal transmogrification, so he has roles in both the past and the future. His Wolverine is light and breezy, a far cry from the brooding protagonist of X-Men, yet this makes his character more palatable and much easier to identify with. Other major characters are unfortunately sidelined - Storm (Halle Berry) and Beast (the glimpse of Beast is so fleeting that Kelsey Grammer is not credited for it). However, the younger Professor X (James McAvoy), Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and Beast (Nicholas Hoult) shine in roles which are understated and dignified, yet which have massive repercussions in the mutant world of X-Men. Director Bryan Singer is on top form here, skilfully guiding the movie towards its triumphant conclusion. This should keep all those comic-book aficionados content until the next one. 3 / 5

On DVD: That Awkward Moment 15 (94 mins) Hands up, all those who have seen Zac Efron in a decent movie. I doubt many hands have moved, but I shall continue anyway. Still trying to escape his ‘tween heartthrob’ status, Efron attempts to make a more ‘grown up’ movie. So we are presented with That Awkward Moment, a predictable, ultra-modern, urbane rom-com in which the battle of the sexes has been replaced with the odd skirmish. Three friends: Jason (Efron), Daniel (Miles Teller) and Mikey (Michael B. Jordan) are besties because of three things: their love of xBox, beer and wanting women they can never or should never have. After a string of romantic disasters, which all end at ‘that awkward moment’ (when one is asked, ‘So…where is this going?’), the three dudes decide to make a pact, each promising to remain single. Enter Ellie (Imogen Poots), who just happens to be Efron’s ideal woman. Unsurprisingly, the pact proves ineffective and each friend pairs off. Efron and Poots work well together; they are far from boring. However, they have little chemistry. Without that certain spark, it is difficult to ask the audience to root for them and their relationship. Daniel’s relationship with friend/lover Chelsea is completely forgettable; in fact the only relationship which comes close to providing any emotional gravitas is Mikey’s. Mikey and his ex-wife are in the middle of a divorce and Mikey cannot understand why. It was brave of director Tom Gormican to include this plot device in an otherwise light and frothy rom-com and it nearly works but it always cut short to give Efron more screen time. The biggest problem with this movie is its lack of originality; there is nothing in it we have not seen a hundred times before, so the big question is (unless you are one of Efron’s hoards of screaming fans): can you sit through 90 minutes of vague repetition? 3 / 5 34

St Ita’s Primary School Start of School Year New School Year begins Monday 1st September 2014 (New P1 and Nursery Pupils will receive their starting date later) Staff Development Day School closed on Monday 13th October 2014 for Parent Teacher Meetings Autumn Half Term School closed for one week from Monday 27th October and reopens on Monday 3rd November 2014 Christmas Holiday School closes at 11.45 on Tuesday 23rd December 2014 and reopens on Wednesday 7th January 2015 St Ita’s Girls’ Team has been crowned ‘Inter Area Girls’ Cross Country Champions’ after a very competitive finale to the cross country season. Naoise, Sophie, Kerri, Ellen K, Rachel, Anna, Aoife and Ellen C arrived at Ormeau Park with two trophies at stake. They were defending their SEELB title from 2013 and trying to go one place better than last year by winning the Inter Area title. A fabulous team effort saw St Ita’s declared the winners of the SEELB Cross Country Final and winners of the Inter Area Cross Country Final. Everyone in St Ita’s is immensely proud of the team’s achievements. Congratulations to all the girls for the tremendous effort and commitment they have shown all year. Special thanks to Mrs Michelle Scott who has trained, mentored, supervised & chauffeured the team throughout the year. St Ita’s Win the World Cup! The Soccer Team took part in a Mini World Cup organised by the IFA. The tournament, held at Lough Moss, consisted of 7 schools from the local borough including St. Joseph's and St. Bernard's. Each school was given a country’s name who is participating in the FIFA World Cup. St. Ita's were selected to be Argentina. All schools played in a league format which meant each side played each other. The talent on show was magnificent. Every game was extremely competitive and our boy’s went through the whole tournament with a 100% record. A wonder goal from Declan Magee helped to secure the trophy. This has been a fantastic year for our school team. We went through the whole season undefeated - THE INVINCIBLES! Hopefully next year will prove to be as successful. 38

PSNI Police Advice - Crime Prevention With the summer holidays fast approaching, local police in the Castlereagh area are urging residents to think about crime prevention. Police will adopt a proactive approach but we also need the local community to help protect themselves too. Sergeant Fairfield, from the Neighbourhood Policing Team, explained: "If you are going away this summer, do not forget to let the police know that your house will be vacant, and remember to employ a few crime prevention measures before you go. "Simple things like cutting the grass, cancelling the milk and newspapers and using time switches to turn on lights that would ordinarily be on in the house help to give your home that lived-in look and remember to set the burglar alarm as well. "You should also arrange for a responsible person to collect your mail, particularly if you have a glass front door, as people are able to see it pile up on the mat. Outside, ladders and tools should be locked away so that criminals cannot use them to break into your house. Sheds must have suitable door locks and the contents should be security marked against theft and should be secured separately within the shed which will make them more difficult to steal." Sergeant Fairfield called on all members of the community to be vigilant. He continued: "Everyone needs good neighbours, and if criminals know their every move is being watched, it is much harder for them to operate unnoticed. You are in the best position to know what is out of the ordinary where you live, so tell police what you have seen. Reporting all suspicious activity promptly to the police is important and we welcome the opportunity to check out all reports. For those not heading away, people enjoy spending more time out in their gardens. It is always tempting to leave doors and windows open on hot days, but sadly this is exactly what opportunist criminals are looking out for. Make sure your house and garage are kept closed and locked when left unattended and don’t leave valuables in your vehicle. "Remember that some people are also quite prepared to enter your house and steal what comes quickly to hand. To reduce the likelihood of this type of crime taking place, car keys, handbags and wallets should not be left where they can easily be seen or found, or within easy reach of an open window. Put them away properly in a safe place and if you have a burglar alarm set it." Anyone who would like crime prevention advice on this or any other subject can contact their nearest Crime Prevention Officer by telephoning 101, the police non-emergency number.
