Focus on Movies
By Peter Stevenson
AT THE CINEMA: Rise of the Guardians PG, (97 mins) Dreamworks studios have proven themselves worthy rivals to Pixar with the extremely good and highly successful Shrek. Their succeeding canon, however, is a different story. Jack Frost (Chris Pine) awakens to find he has no idea who or where he is or how he came to be there. It turns out that he has been appointed a ‘Guardian’. ‘Guardians’ are a group of mythical beings, comprising Santa Claus (Alec Baldwin), the Tooth Fairy (Isla Fisher), the mute Sandman and the wise-cracking Easter Bunny (Hugh Jackman) who watch over children but who, Tinkerbell-like, will cease to exist if children stop believing in them. The evil Pitch Back (Jude Law), a.k.a. the Boogeyman, wants to ensure this happens so he alone can rule. Plot wise, this movie is deceptively simple; there are many more issues than just defeating Pitch Black, there are chase scenes (for the younger audience members), a death, which older kids can appreciate and a strong theme of identity for anyone who can drag their attention away from the pretty, dense animation. The cast is bright and cheerful, but it is Hugh Jackman’s Easter Bunny who provides any real laughs. His acid-tongued badinage with Frost is one of the only things which retains our interest in the otherwise sloppy dialogue. More wit, slapstick moments and laugh-out-loud moments would have been greatly appreciated, even drawing in the adults in the audience. As it is, director Peter Ramsey’s feature film debut is adequate, but it thinks it’s so much better than it actually is. 3/5
On DVD: The Dark Knight Rises 12A (164 mins) It seems in movie trilogies that the second instalment is usually the best (The Empire Strikes Back, The Godfather, Part 2) and when Christopher Nolan’s film The Dark Knight was released in 2008, the bar was set so high that it seemed inevitable that the follow-up would be somewhat of a let-down. Enter Bane (Tom Hardy), a masked terrorist who believes Gotham is ripe for the plucking. Batman (Christian Bale) has disappeared for eight years, after taking the blame for the death of Harvey Dent, but now he must rise again to protect his beloved Gotham once more. Throw in sultry cat-burglar Selina Kyle/Catwoman (Anne Hathaway) and the stage is set for a rip-roaring action movie with a strong emotional undercurrent. Christian Bale broods superbly as the tortured, damaged protagonist; his physical and mental frailties become a huge obstacle which Bruce Wayne cannot overcome…but Batman can. Tom Hardy provides real menace as Bane; indeed he is so villainous that we wonder if Batman has the mental resolve or even the physical strength to beat him. Anne Hathaway proves almost extraneous to the plot. As any comic-book fan will tell you: Catwoman and Batman are two sides of the same coin, providing, not romance per se, but a kinship, an understanding, a fraternal bond. Suggestive as she is, Hathaway fails to capture the overt sexuality of Michelle Pfeiffer’s patent leather-clad, whip-wielding incarnation in 1992’s Batman Returns and she does very little else. Director Nolan provides a superhero who can easily be dull or camp with a gritty realism which adds dramatic effect and even poignancy. It’s a pity Joel Schumacher did not realise this when he directed his abysmal versions. 4/5 38

Millennium Primary School We have reached the end of what has been a very busy term at Millennium, culminating with the annual Christmas plays from Nursery and P1 – 3 and a carol service for the older children. We marked the festive season with a Jumping Clay session for the whole school where each child made a penguin decoration. They all turned out looking fabulous. Congratulations to Zara Hoy in P7 (pictured right with Mrs Roulston, Principal) for her South Eastern Education and Library Board (SEELB) Achievement Award for Pupil of Courage. Zara was presented with her award by Mr Butler, the Chief Executive Officer of SEELB at a special school assembly. She was nominated for the award for her perseverance and courage in spite of her physical difficulties. Well done Zara! Well done also to our P6 class for their super ‘Titanic’ assembly. The class told the story of the Titanic through music, song, dance, a presentation of Titanic facts, a short play and a display of Titanic models. The class trip to the Titanic pump house certainly helped to add to their knowledge. Congratulations to the P6 team for putting on such an excellent assembly. Matthew and Sophie Buick are pictured with their Titanic model. Our parent’s group recently hosted a Christmas craft fair. This proved to be very successful and was extremely well attended. There was a wonderful atmosphere in the school. Thanks to all the stall holders for coming and the parents for all their hard work in setting up the hall, coordinating with stall holders and running their own Christmas craft and cake stall. We’re already looking forward to next year! Dates for your diary: School starts again after the holidays on Friday 4th January 2013.
Open Morning for prospective Nursery and P1 families will be held on Tuesday 8th January 2013 from 9.30 – 11.00 am. We extend a warm welcome to all families who are interested to come and visit. Please mention the Carryduff Focus Magazine when contacting advertisers

Carryduff WI Members of Carryduff WI would like ladies to come and join them at their monthly meetings from September-June on the 2nd Monday of each month at St Ignatius Church of Ireland Hall at 8 pm. Photos below show the ladies enjoying their Christmas Party. As well as various interesting speakers throughout the year we enjoy social outings with other WI's. We also enjoy short breaks away. We are considering a trip to the Chelsea Flower Show in May and our annual day out in June which we always enjoy. Annually we celebrate St Patrick' Day, Halloween and Christmas. Our Programme for 2013 includes visits from a Milliner and a Gardener, Jewellery making, a curling competition to mention just a few of the activities. In November of each year, we donate toys and gifts to the Family Christmas Appeal. We also have a competition every month reflecting the nature of the guest speaker's subject. Sometimes humorous and sometimes serious. Various trophies are awarded throughout the year within our own group for craft, baking, bowls and others. In 2014 we are looking forward to our 60th Anniversary when we will have more special events during that year. For any further information, contact Jean on 02890 813119 or just come along to one of the monthly meetings.

Focus on Movies
By Deirdre Devine
AT THE CINEMA: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 12A, (169 mins) It must be the most keenly anticipated film of 2012. Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit” has finally opened at the cinema so we can all see for ourselves what the fuss is about. Based on the children's book by J.R.R. Tolkien, and with many of the same cast (Ian McKellan as Gandalf, Cate Blanchett as Galadriel and even a fleeting appearance by Elijah Wood as Frodo), any Lord of the Rings fans will be delighted to be transported back to Middle Earth. This tale is set some 60 years before the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and again will be another three-parter. In this first instalment, the older Bilbo Baggins (again played by Ian Holm) begins to write down the tale of his adventures for Frodo, and we go along for the ride with the young Bilbo (Martin Freeman) who sets out reluctantly to help an assortment of quirky dwarves reclaim their mountain home from Smaug the dragon. In one memorable section of the film, Bilbo is separated from the dwarves and meets Gollum / Smeagol played once again by the very talented Andy Serkis. (Incidentally, Serkis was also the director of the 2nd unit on this film). A clever game of riddles follows with Gollum threatening to eat Bilbo unless he figures out the answers, and I wont spoil it for you, but this explains how the ‘Ring’ ended up in Bilbo’s possession all those years later. It’s a hugely enjoyable film, with some laughs along the way. The first hour or so is a bit of getting-to-know-you with the dwarves descending on a bemused Bilbo, causing a bit of mayhem and generally eating everything in sight. (A bit like some teenage boys you might think). Some reviews have said this part of the film is overly long and a bit of a drag, but I really enjoyed it. Without this, the endless parade of dwarves would have been confusing later (there are 13 of them, including Bofur - played by our own James Nesbitt, who keeps his distinctive Ulster accent and displays some intriguing beard jewellery!) Once they leave the Shire, the adventure begins. Finding themselves in peril again and again, battling various trolls, goblins and orcs along the way, the tension picks up as you wonder each time, will they ever escape? The 3D effects really add to our enjoyment, whether it’s butterflies or fireballs, apparently flying towards you at speed. Very much an equal co-star is the stunning New Zealand scenery. It’s almost worth going to see this film for the scenery alone, especially as this is the first film shot at 48 frames per second instead of the usual 24. It seems to make the colours pop off the screen and adds substantially to the atmosphere in the theatre. The film finishes without a really satisfactory ending - it’s just the end of the first stage, and a long first stage at 169 mins. Fans of TLOTR wont be disappointed, they’ll just be sorry they have to wait another year for the next part!
