to your Spring Summer issue
Hello again everyone,
It hardly seems like 6 months since the last issue - the time has just flown in. In my last editor’s note I was reminding you about the clocks going back and now they’re about to go forward again! Roll on those longer evenings. Winter will officially be over on Sunday 29th March at 1am. Around the time this issue is starting to land on doormats, (on the morning of Friday 20th March) there’s going to be a once in a lifetime opportunity in our part of the world to see a solar eclipse, weather permitting of course. I cant wait! Nothing like a major planetary event to put us and our busy little lives into perspective! Back to the everyday - as this magazine is published twice a year now, please keep and use this issue until the Autumn Winter issue arrives in October. Thanks to all of you for using the magazine and for supporting our local businesses - I firmly believe we should all ‘shop local’. If you contact any of the advertisers from this issue or visit their premises, please remember to tell them where you saw their ad. Hope you all have a lovely Spring and Summer. Fingers crossed for great weather! Until next time....
Deirdre

Summer is just around the corner; long sleeves have been banished for another few seasons and we’re eyeing up new sandals, sunglasses and swimsuits. It’s all too easy to skimp on bodycare in the colder months, but now the sun is finally out it’s time to treat ourselves to some much-needed TLC. Good exfoliation is a must, particularly if you’re planning on self-tanning. Unfortunately, many of the scrubs on the high-street are too harsh, stripping the skin of its natural oils and leaving it feeling scratched and sore. Heyland and Whittle’s Exfoliating Soap Bag (£6) is a much better option. Filled with natural soaps that are packed with essential oils, it’ll make a noticeable difference to your skin and is the perfect alternative to shower gel. For a really indulgent treat, however, it’s hard to beat the Lime & Ginger Salt Glow by Elemis. At £36.50, it isn’t cheap, but it works wonders and smells divine. While bubbles are fun, if you want your bath product to leave your skin silky smooth, then oil is your best bet. Neom’s Tranquillity Bath and Shower Oil is heavenly. A bottle costs £40 from www.amara.com, but a few drops go a long way. Along with skin nourishing ingredients, such as jojoba and Vitamin E, it has a high concentration of essential oils (12 in total), to help you destress, unwind and forget that row you had with your manager. Pour yourself a large glass of wine, lock the bathroom door, put some music on and… relax.

If you moisturise all over every day, you can get away with a light body lotion. But, let’s face it, how many of us have time? If your daily beauty routine is more ‘bare essentials’ than ‘at home spa’ it’s worth investing in a heavy duty hydrator for the weekend. Aveda’s Beautifying Body Moisturiser (£22) is wonderfully rich, but absorbs well, with none of that greasy residue that some high street brands can leave you with. The smell is, quite simply, amazing – you may well find that you attract a lot of compliments on your new perfume. Most of us are guilty of neglecting our poor feet, particularly when we can hide them away in boots all winter. But, come summer, the most beautiful pair of designer sandals won’t hide dry, cracked heels and chipped polish. A salon pedicure always feels like a real indulgence and can get your feet in tip-top condition for the warmer months. For minimal maintenance, opt for a long-lasting varnish, such as shellac, in a colour that co-ordinates with your favourite sandals. Aqua, coral, bronze or soft violet all look great with a tan. Keep the good work up at home with regular moisturising. We love Narynda’s Heel Balm (£9.50), which is completely natural and unbelievably nourishing. (It also works wonders on dry elbows.) www.narynda.com Cherry-red and ‘nude’ lips are both key trends for this summer. Whichever look you decide to embrace, you need a smooth surface to get the best result. Red lipstick, in particular, will highlight any areas of chapping or dryness. Mint Julips Lip Scrub by Lush (£5.50) gently buffs away dry patches and softens skin. Warning: sugar, lemon & peppermint make it rather tasty, so you may find yourself reaching for it quite a lot…

Cosy, comfortable and oh-so pretty, country style has eternal appeal. Think roses winding around the porch, crackling log fires, chickens in the yard and a Victoria sponge cooling on the range cooker. As interiors expert Katherine Sorrell says, who could resist?
Some distressed paintwork here and there enhances the overall effect.
When choosing fabrics, an informal mix of gently worn patterns gives a lovely effect. Why They Do The Things They Do Marking, scratching and climbing are common fe-
line behaviours, but depending on the circumstances, may not always be welcome. Here are some of the reasons why cats behave the way they do, and you can do about it. Marking This is often a territorial reaction to stress – maybe the fear that other cats could invade their space. Apart from providing extra love and attention, you need to make sure their eating and sleeping areas are free from other smells, and safe from intruders. Scratching This is an inherent trait in all cats, and enables them to keep their
claws sharp should they need to defend themselves. A scratching post is the best way to prevent damage to your furniture, and spraying catnip on and around it may help to distract them from chair and table legs. Scent glands in their paws also mean that they may be scratching as a way to mark their territory. Climbing It won’t be unusual to see your cat hanging from the top of a curtain when you go into a room, clinging on for dear life having got to the top and then become stuck. Their natural sense of adventure, plus the need to run off a bit of energy, makes them do things like this. You may even find them looking down on you from the top of a door. It’s usually because they feel more confident when up high, or are simply showing their fun side.

A comfortable place to rest their head, extra support for arthritic bones and a little extra TLC dogs need all of these things as they grow old. You can make their twilight years a happy time for both of you simply by being aware of the issues they face, and what you can do to help. An orthopaedic bed with a memory foam mattress will support their joints by moulding itself around them, helping with blood circulation and providing a comfortable place to rest. Problems such as hip dysplasia often show themselves in middle age, so even if you don’t consider your dog to be elderly, it may be worthwhile investing in this type of bed. What types of luxury beds are there?

Covered with a sheepskin or fleece outer layer, this would have therapeutic benefits particularly if your house is draughty. Elevated On the theme of draughty houses an elevated bed keeps your dog away from a cold floor, and is available in a range of sizes. Luxury materials One of the most important considerations is the material used to make the bed and mattress. You can buy alpaca fibre and soft fleece fillings, but it’s also important to think about practicality, so zip-off covers should be a priority to maintain hygiene. A luxurious place to sleep is important for dogs of all ages, but particularly so for those in their later years.

While few of us are likely to spend nearly £900 on Flymo’s latest robot lawnmower, let alone £2,500 for a high-end robot mower, there are lots of garden gadgets that can make life easier and more fun. One of the most useful developments is the arrival of cordless tools ranging from lawnmowers to electric chainsaws. Battery technology has improved dramatically in a very short time, so it’s possible to get tools such as Black & Decker’s 36V cordless strimmer that can cut up to 3,750 metres on a single charge. Just remember to charge them up before you use them, as recharging flat batteries can take a while. If you fancy something a bit less high tech, Japanese hori-hori knives might be right up your street: the name means “digging digging” and a hori-hori knife’s straight sharp blade makes it perfect for everything from planting to cutting roots. They can be a little tricky to find, but eBay is always a good source of such tools. Another great tool is the Woodman’s Pal. It’s a little pricey - expect to pay £50 upwards - but it’s really clever
28
and really useful. The Pal was originally designed for the US Army in the early 1940s and it’s a cross between an axe and a machete, with a hooked section on the end. That makes it great for clearing all kinds of vegetation, and it replaces a whole bunch of tools including pruning saws, shears, loppers and in some cases, even chainsaws. This year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) featured the usual home entertainment technology, lots of TVs and even more laptops, but it also had an unusually large selection of garden gadgets. One of the cutest was the Green Farm Cube. Another Japanese design, and it’s a hydroponic grow box that enables you to grow plants such as herbs anywhere all year round. At around £120 it’s quite expensive, but it looks great and works well. It’s particularly good for people who want to grow things but don’t have a garden to do it. It seems that smartphones are taking over every aspect of our lives, so it’s not a surprise that they’re starting to look at our gardens too. App-connected gadgets are everywhere at the moment. Netatmo’s Connected
Weather Station (approx £110) tells your phone about indoor and outdoor humidity, temperature and air quality as well as predicting the weather, while Koubachi’s Plant Sensor 2 Outdoor (approx £96) measures soil moisture, sunlight, infra-red light, temperature and more to let you know exactly how well valuable plants are doing. Another CES exhibitor, Edyn, promises to deliver the “connected garden” with sensors that analyse the soil, monitor the temperature and even check the weather forecast to help you decide what to plant and how to look after it. The product range also includes smart water valves that automatically water your plants, and solar power means you don’t need to run any cables. It’s overkill for a couple of blooms from Homebase, but if you’re a serious gardener it’s a seriously clever bit of kit. Edyn is currently available for pre-order, and the sensor and water valve are $99 (£65) and $59 (£39) respectively.

• 2 large potatoes, peeled and thickly sliced • 1 large aubergine, trimmed and sliced • 3 tbsp olive oil • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • 150ml vegetable stock • 1 tsp dried oregano • 2 tsp tomato puree • 300g thick Greek yogurt • 2 medium eggs, beaten • 1 tbsp cornflour • ¼ tsp grated nutmeg • 1 large tomato, sliced • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Sprinkle with some freshly grated Parmesan cheese or thin slices of mozzarella cheese before baking to make this dish even tastier!
30
Bring a large pan of lightly salted water to the boil. Add the sliced potatoes and simmer for about 5 minutes until almost tender. Drain well and refresh under cold running water. Set aside. Place the aubergine slices in a shallow bowl and drizzle over 2 tbsp of the olive oil. Heat a heavybased frying pan over a medium heat. Cook the aubergine slices for 1-2 minutes on each side until tender and just golden. Remove and set aside. Add the rest of the oil to the pan and gently fry the garlic for 1 minute. Whisk in the vegetable stock, oregano and tomato puree and bring to the boil. Remove from the heat. Preheat the oven to 190C, 170C fan, Gas Mark 5. Layer the potato and aubergine slices in a large ovenproof dish (at least 8cm deep). Season lightly with salt and freshly ground black pepper between each layer. Pour the stock mixture over the vegetables. Place the yogurt, eggs and cornflour in a bowl and beat together until smooth. Add the nutmeg and season lightly. Spoon the mixture over the layered vegetables and top with the tomato slices. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45Answer minuteson until the 38 top page is golden and bubbling.

MILLENNIUM INTEGRATED PRIMARY SCHOOL is delighted to announce that the P7 teacher and Vice-Principal, Barry Corrigan, has been awarded Microsoft ‘Fellow’ status for 2015 as an Expert Educator. This accolade, 1 of only 100 such recognised teachers worldwide, is in recognition of the commitment to embedding the use of technology and creativity in the classroom. Barry travelled to London last month to meet up with other educators at the Microsoft headquarters. He then gave a recorded interview to Anthony Salcito, the worldwide head of Microsoft Education to discuss and his own vision for education and the role technology can play in it. The video will be incorporated onto the dailyedventures.com website. This is a great accolade for Barry and a recognition of the leading place Millennium Integrated PS has in education on a worldwide stage. The Millennium IPS choir recently took part in the Peace Proms at the Odyssey Arena. The Peace Proms is a musical and cultural celebration and provides a unique platform for young people to showcase their talent while promoting peace, unity and tolerance through music. It was organized by Cross Border Orchestra Ireland. The event was a tremendous success and the choir did us proud. Many thanks to our music teacher, Mrs. Wendy Ballard for the time and effort she puts into such prestigious events. P4 have decorated a cow for Marie Curie.
