Deadline for adverts for the May issue: Monday 18th April 2016
to your April magazine
Hello again everyone, We’ve some very timely advice on the community pages for all householders from the Lisburn and Castlereagh PSNI about dealing with Bogus Callers. Police recommend you use the Quickcheck telephone service to check if a caller to your home is genuine. This is especially important for those people living alone - don't be afraid to close your door and keep people waiting on your doorstep while you use the Quickcheck service. It might seem rude, but better to be 100% safe. Read more of the Police advice on page 42. Last month I also featured Police advice on keeping your home secure and reducing your risk of being burgled, and sadly, two households in the Manse Road area suffered the upset of returning home to find they’d been burgled this week. And this was during the day time in broad daylight. If you see any suspicious activity in your area, report it to the police - call 101. (In an emergency, you should ring 999.) Alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Back to this issue - as usual, it’s jam-packed with lots of local businesses advertising, and all their special offers are gathered together for you below. Feel free to take advantage. Until next time!
Deirdre

Spring has sprung and it’s gardening season. But not everybody has a garden or access to decent growing space - and even if you do have the space, the recent stormy weather has been enough to keep all but the most determined gardener indoors. Don’t despair, though: there are plenty of gadgets that enable you to grow great things indoors or when you have limited space for green things. There are even tools to design gardens that don’t exist. If you’re also a keen cook, you’ll like the Indoor Allotment (£24.99, currently on pre-order at Firebox.com): it’s a miniature herb garden complete with picket fence and storage shed. It includes basil, coriander and oregano along with everything you need to get your herbs growing - and it’s small enough to fit in the corner of a windowsill. If you fancy something a little bit more ambitious, IKEA’s Socker miniature greenhouse is just £12 with an assembled size of 45cm wide, 22cm deep and 35cm high, which is more than enough for all kinds of plants. You can also keep the roof vents partly open to improve air circulation for plants that don’t like it too hot. While you’re in IKEA, it’s worth checking out their self-watering
6
plant pots too. The Sötcitron and PS Fejö pots (from £6 to £16) are designed for those of us who don’t always remember to water our plants, and do a superb job for very little money. Fancy something a little more high-tech? The Click and Grow (€59.95 from clickandgrow.com) describes itself as a “smart garden” and uses a NASA-inspired combination of hydroponics and electronics to ensure that your plants get the right combination of water, oxygen and nutrients without you doing anything. It includes a LED lamp for maximum germination, and because it’s LED the running costs are microscopic. The creators suggest growing petunias, tomatoes, chillies, basil or thyme but it should be able to handle anything that isn’t too large. If you’ve got green fingered children, the Chuppon selfwatering animal planter (£9.99) should delight them: it’s a ceramic animal with a herb basket on its back and a straw that sips from any glass or mug. There are four animals and four herbs to choose from, although of course you can put your own herbs in instead. Even the smartphone has made its presence felt in the world of
gardening, and there are lots of apps and devices for indoor and outdoor gardening. One of the cleverest devices is the Parrot Flower Power, a wireless device that sits in your plant pot and monitors the plant’s health, sending alerts to your phone. It’s available for Apple and Android phones, measures sunlight, temperature, fertiliser and moisture, and it currently costs £42. That’s probably a bit steep if you’re growing cress, but if you’ve got something exotic or temperamental it could be a very wise investment indeed. There’s another type of digital gardening you can do, and that’s to create a virtual one in your computer - something you can do just for fun, or to plan what you’ll do to a real garden space. There are many garden planning apps to choose from, including My Garden (free from www.gardena.com/uk) and Marshalls Garden Visualiser (free from www.marshalls.co.uk). Happy gardening!

GOLD AWARD WINNER
NEW SLIMMING WORD GROUP LAUNCH
Consultant Kelly is pictured below receiving her gold award from the Slimming World founder Margaret Miles Bramwell. This award was given for Kelly’s dedication and support for her Slimming World members, leading to many successes. This puts Kelly in the top 5% of consultants in the company!
Steph, now 25, joined a Slimming World group when she found herself a size 22 at 22 years of age. "I could never have been described as slim but my weight never bothered me until I started going out with my friends" says Steph, "My friends would wear beautiful "going out" dresses and I was always wearing long tops and leggings and feeling less glamorous."
Kelly is passionate about providing her members with great service and she firmly believes in the group support which is why she is eagerly looking forward to welcoming all new, past and present members to help them all reach their target dreams. Kelly herself has lost 6 stones with Slimming World, and she knows how much this group support helped her, so come along and experience it for yourself. A warm welcome awaits on Thursdays at the Ivanhoe Hotel, Carryduff at both 5.15pm pm and 7.15pm. You can contact Kelly on 07850 585294
At University Steph found she couldn’t even shop at the same stores as her friends and had to wear frumpy old fashioned clothes which she hated. Steph says “In January 2015, I decided to do something about my weight. Having listened to friends and colleagues talk so much about Slimming World I decided to give it a go. I was nervous but as soon as I walked in and met my Consultant Melissa I knew I was in the right place. All the members were so welcoming - I was ready to change my lifestyle from that first evening. Within 5 weeks I had lost 1st 4lbs and was Slimmer of the Week 4 times and Slimmer of the month. I really couldn't believe how easy it was and how much I could eat on the Extra Easy plan.” Steph is really looking forward to launching her own group on 30th March, sharing her experiences and Slimming World knowledge with others. It really has been life changing for her and if she can make others feel the way she feels she will be very happy.

Spring is a great time to clear out the makeup bag (or overflowing cupboard in my case) and treat yourself to a few new goodies. How pretty is this new palette from Paul & Joe? Teaming an eye shadow duo with a powder blush, the palette is available in two shades: Papillons de Printemps and Floral Nectar (pictured). Retailing at £28 each, they’re not cheap, but the colours are easy to apply and you’ll be the envy of the other bathroom mirror hoggers on a night out. If you really want to splash out, Paul & Joe have also released some new lipsticks, in three vibrant spring shades. Many people find that they need to buy a new foundation for spring/ summer, as their skin loses its winter hibernation paleness. (Or that’s my excuse anyway.) The new Aqua Glow Serum Foundation by Stila combines foundation with a treatment serum. It gives great, natural looking coverage, while hydrating and softening skin. 94% of testers reported dramatically improved skin tone. If you can’t wait to take your makeup off at the end of the day because your face feels dry and uncomfortable, you need to try this foundation. It contains hyaluronic acid and other ingredients that help to keep skin hydrated for up to 12 hours after applying it. Available in 10 shades, the Aqua Glow Serum Foundation retails at £34.50. If your hair is looking a little ‘meh’, but there’s still weeks to go until your next trip

to the salon, try a KC Color Mask. Available in 14 shades, including platinum, golden copper, plum and coffee, these masks revitalise coloured hair. A small amount helps to maintain the hair colour and add brightness, while a larger amount can deepen the colour intensity. Just apply to freshly washed hair, comb through, leave for up to ten minutes and wash out. They’re particularly useful for toning down brassy tones in blonde hair, and giving depth to darker shades. The masks also contain Pro-Vitamin B5 and keratin derivative, to help repair the cuticle. Prices start from under £5. Spring demands a lighter, fresher fragrance, and Yardley London has just released the perfect one. English Daisy is reminiscent of a wildflower meadow – floral, but not too sweet. It’s unashamedly girly, with notes including hyacinth and white rose, warmed with sandalwood and musk. And, at just £19.99 for 50ml, it’s a bit of a bargain. Team it with the English Daisy body lotion, £6.50 and embrace the warmer weather. I’m finding that the sun’s reappearance means it’s a lot easier to drag the kids out for a walk (although it’ll be a while before we’re out of our wellies). Along with wet wipes and plasters, the one thing I always take with me is Pure & Light Organic’s Essential Family on-the-Go Cream. It’s packed with plant-derived vitamins, and helps to treat everything from insect bites and bruises to eczema. The 18 natural active ingredients include soothing calendula, hydrating shea butter and nourishing avocado. Priced at £15, it’s available from www.pureandlightorganic.eu and www.lovelula.co.uk.

Nature Focus In another of a new series of articles about our local environment, Helen Long writes about her observations of nature a bit further afield, outside Carryduff. This month Helen visits Kircubbin.... Our range is extending along part of the inner arm of the Ards Peninsula, via Greyabbey, as far as Kircubbin. The latter is a quaint little place full of antique shops and some lovely classical architecture, and there is much to explore in the ruins of the Abbey itself. I hope to return there in a future article. The drive from Newtownards along the first part of the Portaferry Road is a great place to catch a glimpse of the iconic light-bellied Brent geese. In autumn and winter, if the tide is right (always a variable here), there will be thousands feeding on the eel-grass near the shore - an absolutely spectacular sight! Only to be equalled by the vision of a flock Brent geese eating eel-grass taking to the air! I recently had a close encounter with one just outside Newtownards. Somehow it had strayed on to the road and I had to jam on Brent geese in flight my brakes and honk my horn to encourage it back towards the shore! Amazing to have flown all the way from the high Arctic, and then get lost in Newtownards!!! There is no doubting Greyabbey’s beauty, but for some reason I feel much more drawn to Kircubbin, only a few miles along the coast. Perhaps it’s the wonderful fare on offer at the restaurant Katch 27 on the main street, conveniently adjacent to the public car park! I discovered from an information leaflet that the kelp seaweed industry played an important part in Kircubbin’s past, as soda ash was created from it, necessary for linen manufacture (bleaching) throughout Co Down. In fact, as I’ve travelled around recently it has been brought home to me just how much linen was woven Lunch at Katch 27 into the heart and soul of most of our local communities! We need to remember that we 21st century technological wizards are actually standing on the shoulders of giants (and I’m not talking Finn McCool here!). We are inheritors of the wealth and status achieved by the long hours and hard work of our ancestors, whether in the hub at Belfast, or in the humblest and most remote villages right out on the fringes. I’m taking the risk of letting the smugglers have the last word! This activity was apparently very common throughout the Ards Peninsula during the 1700s, with Kircubbin providing a convenient route in for the contraband goods. The spin-off for the (naturally unseeing!) locals was, of course, cheap luxury goods such as alcohol and tobacco. Health and safety regulations were obviously still a very long way off!

ST ITA’S PRIMARY SCHOOL On Thursday 3rd March, pupils took part in the celebrations for World Book Day. As part of this, all children came to school dressed as a character from their favourite story. They also brought a copy of their favourite book with them to share with their class. It was an absolutely amazing day. Lots of photographs were taken and they can be viewed on the school website. To compliment World Book Day celebrations and the Scholastic Book Fair the pupils also had a visit from Declan Carville - a published author of children's books. Some of his published credits include A Winter Night in the Fairy Glen, The Magic Harp, Kathleen O'Byrne, and The Incredible Sister Brigid. The boys and girls could not believe that there was a ‘real’ author in their classroom! As 2016 is the Year of the Monkey the Confucius Institute organised a competition to design a poster; this was open to all primary schools in Northern Ireland. With over two thousand entries we are proud and delighted to announce that one of our P6 students, Peter (left) won the second prize! He is looking forward to spending his prize money and choosing gifts in Waterstones Bookshop. St. Ita’s Primary School came second overall in the competition. Mandarin is going from strength to strength in our school and we would like to thank Miss Shufang Luo for all the wonderful work she is doing with the pupils. MILLENNIUM PRIMARY SCHOOL 20 members of the Millennium IPS school family put on their glad rags and headed down to the Armagh City Hotel last month for the Families First NI Award Night. We were thrilled to have been nominated in three different categories – Best Teacher, Outstanding Principal and Best School. We had three teachers in the Best Teacher Category; Miss Rachel McClements from P1, Mrs Wendy Ballard our P3 and Music teacher and Ms Sue Bishop, our recently retired Special Education Needs Co-ordinator. We were all delighted when the award was presented to Ms Bishop, who has worked at MIPS for 14 years and gave absolutely everything to the school. After a long and successful career she has recently taken early retirement. We would like to wish her all the best for her retirement. We were delighted when the awards were presented to Mrs Roulston for Outstanding Principal and also to Millennium IPS for the Best School. Congratulations to all the staff and families connected to Millennium and thanks to all those that took the time to vote. To celebrate Integrated Education Week this year, the pupils have been taking part in activities based on the theme ‘Harmony’. The week started with a P5 assembly on the meaning of integration through music, poetry, video, sketches and imagery. Other activities included an interschool quiz, movie day, a trip to the Synagogue for P6 and 7, yoga and a visit from Disability Sport NI. Will and Aubrey from Disability NI came into school and talked to the children about how people with disabilities can take part in sport and have been able to go to the ParaOlympics to represent their country. Some of the children got to try out the basketball, football (with blindfolds), bocce, curling and wheelchair racing. They learned about the challenges that people with disabilities have to overcome in order to be the best they can be. To finish the week, all children in Integrated Schools were asked to wear odd socks to raise funds for Integrated Education. There was a great response and we managed to raise £300. Thanks to all those that took part.

ST JOSEPH’S PRIMARY SCHOOL We were delighted to be invited to provide music for the annual Carryduff Retirement Association Spring Concert at Saintfield Road Presbyterian Church on Tues 23rd Feb. 11 children participated in this event and they performed for a sizeable and very appreciative audience made up of parents and senior citizens from the Carryduff area. The music programme began with a violin quartet made up of four of our P6 pupils. They played six pieces and were followed by the St. Joseph’s Clarinet Quartet. A flute trio followed and its performance of An English Country garden encouraged many of the audience to sing along to this well- known tune. The concert concluded with the children singing, ‘Feed the Birds’ from Mary Poppins. This was an extremely enjoyable and worthwhile event and we felt honoured to perform for such an appreciative audience. Kiersten writes “On Wed 24th Feb a number of P6 and 7s attended F1 Technology Challenge. We prepared for this by attending STEM (SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING and MATHS) club. We were guided by Mr Cherry who helped us plan and design Formula 1 cars, PowerPoint presentations and individual logos. It was hard work preparing for this challenge but we managed to successfully complete it with the help of Mr Cherry. We travelled to Ballymena North Business Complex, Ballymena. When we got there all of the different teams had set up their pits and we got ready to race. All of the teams raced their cars and had to do a presentation to two industry experts. They asked us questions about Formula One and about what we had learned from the project. After lunch we presented our portfolio to other experts. Then we looked at all of the trophies, there were so many. We looked at all of the pits and cars belonging to other schools. At the end we were given a Kinnex and given a challenge. We had 50 minutes to build a fun fair ride. We had an engine to make it move. Everyone made great ones. After that it was time to go back home. I would like to thank all of our sponsors for helping us get there and back and for our t-shirts.”

POLICE INFORMATION NOTICE - BOGUS CALLERS The PSNI in Lisburn and Castlereagh District wants everyone to keep their homes and valuables secure - keep everything closed and locked when out and when you retire for the evening. Residents should also be wary of bogus callers. Most callers to your home are genuine, but precautions need to be taken to prevent bogus callers getting into your home. You may feel it is rude to refuse entry to someone, but it is your doorstep and therefore, your decision. Remember never leave the door unlocked and do not to leave the keys in unsafe places such as under the doormat or plant pot for you to gain access to the property. Things to be aware of: Criminals using false identities to try and get into your home to
steal are known as ‘distraction burglars’ or ‘bogus callers’ Just because a caller says they’re from your water or gas company,
the council, or even the police, it doesn’t necessarily mean they are

Bogus callers can also wear ordinary clothes, they can be children
or adults wanting nothing more than a drink of water or to wash their hands - beware these requests, they are excuses to distract you Be wary of unknown youngsters who call asking for a drink, searching for lost pets, or saying their football is in your garden they may be trying to distract you from your door.
Remember it's your home. Don't be afraid to say ‘No’ and report anything suspicious to police. The following advice will help to beat bogus callers: Keep front & back doors locked (with keys taken out), even when
at home Stop and think if anyone is expected Look through a spy hole or window to identify the caller Put the door chain or door bar on first before opening the door,
and keep it on whilst talking to the caller Check their identity card carefully even if the caller has pre-
arranged appointment Don’t let visitors who are in a hurry, pressurise or confuse you - ask
them to wait outside while you confirm who they are, genuine visitors won’t mind waiting If you need to leave a caller standing outside while you collect or check something indoors, close the door and lock it Never use a telephone number given by the caller – find the number in your telephone directory If you are not sure ask them to return when someone is with you. If you are not sure DO NOT LET THEM IN
Genuine callers will not mind waiting - Quickcheck is a free telephone service available 24 hours a day all year round. To check the identity of a caller to your door, ring FREEPHONE 0800 0130 22 90. Your call will be answered personally and promptly by a trained operator. They will check that the person at your door is genuine. If they are not or they think there is something suspicious, they will contact police.
