Welcome (once again!) to the Local Focus magazine for Saintfield, Ballygowan and Darragh Cross. We’re Back!, due to popular demand. (Thanks to everyone who contacted me to say the magazine was missed!) You inspired me to publish again, and so here it is! This magazine will be published twice a year - in September for the Autumn Winter season and again in March for the Spring Summer season. I hope you will keep and use this issue until the next one lands on your doormat. Please remember to tell advertisers where you saw their ad, and I hope you enjoy reading the magazine as much as I enjoy putting it together. It’s now been six years since I first started publishing the Focus magazines, and I still love every minute. It’ll be a while until you hear from me again. Don't forget - the clocks go back on Sunday 28th October 2012. When you get your next copy, it’ll almost be time for them to go forward again!

Deirdre

DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR CRITICAL ILLNESS POLICY COVERS? We all know someone who has suffered from a critical illness such as cancer, heart attack or stroke, and the impact this had on them and their family. Critical illness insurance can provide financial support at a crucial time, by paying out a tax-free lump sum to cover a mortgage, time off work or medical treatment. It should not be confused with terminal illness cover, which is included in most life insurance policies. If you already have critical illness cover then now is the time to review it. Competition between insurance companies has forced premiums down while the number of conditions covered has been increasing. This means that a critical illness policy taken out today could be a lot cheaper than a policy that is several years old, while covering a wider range of illnesses. And with the EU Gender Directive impacting on insurance premiums from December 2012, the next few months could be the best time to improve your cover while the premiums are still lower. As an example, £50,000 of life or critical illness cover, over a 25 year term, for a 35 year old male non-smoker is now available for around £17.50 per month. Cost is not the only important factor as the cover can vary a lot from one policy to another. The example quoted above is for a policy rated 5 stars by Defaqto (an independent financial research company), but some policies (including those offered by several banks) are rated just 2 stars, as the conditions covered are not as comprehensive. Most policies also include some children’s critical illness cover at no extra cost. This can pay out a lump sum if a child is diagnosed with a critical illness, to cover costs or time off work. Insurance company statistics show that children’s critical illness claims are quite common, and again the level of cover varies between different policies. A critical illness policy cannot cover every eventuality, but for many people it will be the difference between surviving illness financially as well as physically.

For a free review of your current critical illness insurance, or for further advice, contact Emma Greer; Tel 07885 407604 or e-mail emma@freedom-financial.co.uk

Saintfield Heritage Society Talks All held in Woodrow Room of Saintfield Parish Church Hall at 8:00pm Thursday 11th October. William Smyth will speak on the Irish Harp with musical interludes by his wife, Anna, who will play the Harp. William and Anna have a great interest in preserving Irish traditional music and William will explore the role of the harp as a musical instrument.

Thursday 8th November. Clive Scoular will speak on “The Andrews family of Comber”. We all know, especially in this year, 2012, of the contribution made by Thomas Andrews who designed the ‘Titanic’ and whose name will always be associated with this iconic, but tragic, liner. The Andrews family, however, has been a significant dynasty in north Down for centuries and the generation of which Thomas was a member must also be celebrated for a Prime Minister, a Lord Chief Justice and a cricketer extraordinary. These brothers, John, James and Willie, along with Thomas, shaped politics, shipbuilding, the law and sport as no other Ulster family has ever done before.

Thursday 10th January 2013. Jeremy Shaw will speak on the Shaw family in Saintfield since 1798. Local history is often preserved by the oral tradition of passing stories and accounts from one generation to the next. So it was that Jeremy first learnt from his grandfather Sam of the fate of his ancestor William Shaw subsequent to the Battle of Saintfield. Jeremy will recount William’s story as told by grandfather to grandson, interwoven with some historical investigations of his own when Jeremy decided to check the story out for myself around the time that he was the same age as William when he met his fate. Jeremy proposes to include some other parts of his family history to the present day.

Thursday 14th February. Brian McElherron will speak on Irish Market Houses and related buildings. Brian has photographs of about 120 market houses and will use them to show the typical structure of market houses, as well as atypical buildings. Brian has some illustrations of other structures, such as market crosses and weigh-bridge buildings which are associated with marketing. He will give brief histories of most of the buildings, where information is available and will give some examples of where information may be obtained.

Alexander Dickson Primary School, Ballygowan At Alexander Dickson Primary School we strive to achieve high academic standards within a caring yet stimulating learning environment. Our child-centred approach to learning places your child at the heart of what we do. Alexander Dickson Primary School continues to make strong links with the Ballygowan Community Playgroup which provides morning and afternoon sessions for pre-school children, on our school site. The children at the playgroup become very familiar with our school environment as they have the opportunity to share the facilities for Physical Education and play activities throughout the year such as our Foundation Stage Christmas Party and PTA events. This ensures that new Primary One pupils are met with a familiar and welcoming environment as they embark on their learning experience at Alexander Dickson Primary School. Many of our pupils are engaging in Early Bird and Late Bird Clubs. This convenient care facility is available on-site before and after school. We also offer a wide range of extracurricular activities for example: badminton, football and cookery club. At school we www.alexanderdicksonprimary.com are fully committed to making a positive contributions to the community. The staff endeavours to provide a nurturing environment by placing a significant emphasis on establishing and maintaining positive links with parents and the wider community. The pupils are able to recognise their role in the community through their active involvement in public events such as our Carol Service and Intergenerational projects. We have a fantastic elevated site with outdoor facilities including raised garden beds, an adventures trail and a spacious playground with attractive play resources.
