Welcome to the December issue of the Carryduff Focus The end of the year is always a time for reflection and looking back. I never make new year resolutions (I don't keep them, so very little point in making them in the first place), but I do like to look back and take stock. While I’m thinking through what’s changed since this time last year, I’d like to make my usual plea to all of you to do a little bit of your festive shopping locally this Christmas. The local small business owners (who are probably our neighbours) would appreciate your custom I’m sure. Now, its my turn! Lots of you have let me know over the last year how much you enjoy receiving the magazine each month. Some by email, some on the phone and some by stopping my distributors as they make their deliveries. Thank you all very much, I hope you continue to enjoy reading the magazine as much as I enjoy putting it together. If you’ve any ideas for improvement, please let me know. I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank all my lovely distributors (too many to mention individually), my local contributors (Helen Long who writes the nature articles and Peter Stevenson who writes the movie and DVD reviews), and all the community page contributors. Your efforts are much appreciated! Finally, thank you to all my advertisers without you I wouldn't have this great little business! I hope I’ve managed to help boost your business too! I wish you all a very happy and peaceful Christmas.

Your throat is sore, you can’t breathe through your nose and the only thing you want to do is watch TV all day under a duvet. But is it a cold or the flu? A cold: Symptoms come on gradually You feel worse on days 1-2, and usually better in a week It doesn’t often cause a temperature or it’s brief and mild (not above 38oC) Your nose tends to be painful, irritated and red You will feel unwell, but not overwhelmingly tired Sometimes you may also suffer from eye irritation, ear pressure or earache, mild headache and mild muscle pain The flu: Symptoms come on very rapidly You usually feel worse after 2 or 3 days in, but improve after 5 or 6 days You may have a temperature of 38oC or above, which comes on suddenly and can make you sweat, or give you ‘the chills’ Your cough tends to be dry and chesty Headaches are very common; muscles and joints may ache badly You may develop diarrhoea You may have difficulty sleeping, although you feel very tired Both are highly contagious infections caused by viruses and there are only two ways to combat them, avoiding contact
6
and boosting your immune system. Avoiding Contact Think how many surfaces you touch; door handles, stair rails, taps, keypads when we enter our PIN. Now consider how many people have touched them before you. Clean high-contact surfaces regularly and thoroughly Clean your hands regularly and thoroughly, especially after touching your nose or mouth Don’t share cutlery or cups Cold and flu sufferers need their own hand towel or disposable paper towels Use tissues; throwing them away immediately prevents virus-laden droplets escaping into the air Boosting your immune system If you have a medical condition which can make flu more serious, or are over 65, pregnant or a carer, you should be offered the flu vaccine every autumn. There are also many foods and supplements that claim to help. Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid): There is no evidence that it prevents colds; but a regular daily dose may reduce how long your infection lasts and its severity. Zinc: Zinc appears to lessen symptoms and speed up recovery, if taken from the start. Sources: wheat germ, eggs, seafood. Garlic: Only one study has shown it prevents a cold or flu;
once you’re infected, there’s no proof garlic helps. Leave for 20 minutes after peeling and chopping to activate its immune boosting enzymes. Echinacea: A variety of preparations have been trialled with differing results. Some trials show that Echinacea takers are 30% less likely to develop a cold but there’s little evidence it helps once you’re ill. Glutathione and bioflavonoid: These help to maintain a healthy immune system, although there’s no cold or flu fighting evidence yet. Glutathione sources: watermelon, broccoli, cabbage. Bioflavonoid sources: cherries, green peppers, red onions. Selenium: Low levels of selenium have been linked to developing more severe flu, so maintain healthy levels. Sources: fish, nuts, mushrooms. Saline (salt water): Saline drops and sprays can reduce congestion and remove virus and bacteria particles. Do I need to see my GP? Usually, over the counter painkillers and decongestants plus plenty of rest and fluids will be all you need. But do see your GP if: Symptoms last more than a week, or become much worse: very high temperature, severe headache, shortness of breath, coughing up blood or chest pain You develop symptoms not typical of flu, such as a rash You have a medical condition that is making your flu worse

Advice to Householders from PSNI Following a number of reports of so-called 'distraction burglaries' in Carryduff and the surrounding area, local police would like to offer some advice on dealing with unexpected callers to your home. The first thing to remember is NEVER to let a complete stranger into your home without being 100% certain of their identity. Use your peep hole or security chain if you have these. If not, consider having them installed. Ask ALL callers for proof of ID. Inspect their credentials carefully and ensure the photo is theirs. Genuine callers will be glad to show you their identification and will not mind waiting until you have checked that they are who they say. For added peace of mind you can telephone QuickCheck 24/7 for free on 0800 013 22 90 and they will check the caller at your door is legitimate. Do not feel pressured into just letting a caller in because it can feel awkward to ask questions. This is your home, if you have any doubt, keep them out!! Neighbours can also play a vital part in helping protect the more vulnerable in their community against this kind of crime. Look out for suspicious vehicles and people and report ALL suspicious activity to police. The number to call is 0845 600 8000 or in an emergency dial 999. We would also like to remind householders of the importance of a good household security routine in preventing burglary. Make it a habit to always close and lock external doors and windows when going out and when going to bed. Take keys out of the door and don't leave car keys, valuables or Christmas presents where they can be seen through windows. Use timer switches for lamps or perhaps even your Christmas lights. In the darker evenings they will help your property look occupied even if you aren't home. Further crime prevention advice can be obtained by visiting the PSNI website at www.psni.police.uk or by emailing your local neighbourhood Policing team at NPTCarryduff@psni.pnn.police.uk

Landlords - keep yourself right! We have seen an upturn in the buy to let market over the past few months with the number of new Landlords who have instructed us seeking to purchase residential properties to let. However, landlords and particularly those landlords who are new to the buy to let market need to keep themselves informed about the various regulations regarding the letting of property. In this article we will look at the new Tenancy Deposit Scheme, Regulation (NI) 2012 SR2012 No 373 which came into force on 1st April 2013, and briefly at the registration of Houses in Multiple Occupation and Certificate of fitness for residential lettings. When a tenant provides a deposit for a residential letting the deposit must be protected in one of two ways. The first is through an insurance scheme where the Landlord will hold on to the deposit but pay a fee to insure and protect the deposit. The second means to protect the deposit is through a custodial scheme. In this the Landlord will pass the deposit to the scheme for the period of the tenancy. On receipt of the deposit the Landlord must, within 14 days, register the deposit with an approved scheme and further, within 28 days of receipt of the deposit serve the tenant with information as laid out in Schedule 1 para 3 which refers to amount, contact details and property to which the deposit relates, details of the scheme and how the deposit is refunded. If a Landlord fails to comply with these obligations the District Council may impose a penalty of three times the deposit or a fine up to ÂŁ20,000.00. Landlords need to be careful that they do not fall foul of the Registration scheme for houses of multiple occupation under the Housing (NI) Order 2003. Where a house is in multiple occupation by more than 2 qualifying persons who are not all members of the same family then the property must be registered as a house in multiple occupation. Failure to comply with this requirement can result in enforcement proceedings and substantial fines. The Private Tenancies (Northern Ireland) Order 2005 states that a house constructed before 6th November 1956 let out under a private tenancy requires a Certificate of Fitness from the appropriate district council. Campbell Stafford Solicitors are able to provide expert advice on the above and are able to provide legally drafted Tenancy Agreements. If you have any queries please contact Michael Stafford on 02890 230808.

If you want to enhance your eyes, fancy taking a few years off your age or maybe just want to make yourself look that extra bit special, then there’s one beauty craze you really must try out eyelash extensions. A favourite with celebrities everywhere and a must for anyone who wants a quick fix to looking gorgeous, eyelash extensions transform lashes from short and sparse to long and luscious in no time. They’re ideal for those all important occasions, like weddings and parties, where you not only want to look your best on the day, but look fabulous in photos too. By adding shape and definition the extensions ‘open-up’ your peepers and leave you with pretty, seemingly lifted, youngerlooking eyes. Extensions are widely available in salons across the country and are specially applied by trained therapists; a consultation should be carried out so that you can determine exactly what look you want to achieve. If you just want some subtle enhancement and a natural
22
result then try a half set of lashes. However, if you fancy making a statement, then try a full set for a striking finish. You can choose how long, thick and curly your lashes will be. The Application Each individual synthetic lash is carefully bonded to your own eyelashes; 80 to 100 individual lashes are usually applied. During the application your eyes will be closed and protected. You shouldn’t feel any pain or discomfort during this process whatsoever. The Results After you’ve had the lashes applied it is essential to not touch or wet them for a 24 hour period, as the glue will be still be setting. You shouldn’t need to wear mascara, but if you still want to, it’s worth investing in a water soluble product, designed for use with extensions. These mascaras are usually sold at salons which offer the service. Remember to use a salon recommended oil free eye makeup remover too. Staying Power Eyelash extensions typically last between six and eight
weeks. Because they are attached to your own lashes they will fall off as your natural lash grows out. On average you’ll lose about 1215 lashes every two to three weeks - that’s why salons recommend returning for touch-ups when needed to maintain the desired look. They’ll charge a small fee for replacing what has been lost. What It Costs Prices vary from salon to salon, but on average eyelash extensions will set you back around £80-£120 for a full set, or about £65 for a half set. Be Safe Always be sure that the staff at the salon you’ve chosen are fully trained. Ask questions to gain an understanding of the therapist’s skill. Your therapist should carry out a patch test 24 hours before your extensions to ensure that you have no adverse reaction to the glue. Your eyes are extremely delicate, and precious, so make sure you have the test before the treatment. by Helen Taylor

Cold Mountain, Charles Frazier This is the story of two people: injured Civil War veteran Inman, and Ada, the woman who waits for him. To reach her, Inman must leave his hospital bed and walk the long way home to Cold Mountain. Of course, his epic journey means he encounters many a strange character along the way. Ada, meanwhile, has her own internal struggles to contend with as she battles with her upbringing and the future that Cold Mountain represents. This brilliant and beautifullywritten book is one everyone should read at least once in their lifetime. You’ll be transported, without ever leaving your armchair. Snow Falling on Cedars, David Guterson With his hauntingly beautiful descriptions of the wild nature of America’s Pacific Northwest, Guterson’s story of a murder soon reveals itself to be one of a complex love triangle. It’s 1954 and well-respected local fisherman, Carl Heine is found dead in one of his own fishing nets. Local Japanese-American, Kabuo Miyamoto is accused of killing him. In the grip of a terrible snowstorm, the town of San Piedro is forced into dealing
26
with its recent history, and a wave of Anti-Japanese sentiment following World War 2. To complicate the matter, the local newspaper reporter is in love with Kabuo’s wife. If the snow falls and covers everything, is all forgotten? In Cold Blood, Truman Capote It’s 1959 and a Kansas family is brutally murdered. This hugely controversial book focuses on their two killers: Perry Smith and Dick Hickock. Whilst there’s little doubt that the killing of a husband and wife, along with their two children, is despicable, Smith and Hickock come across as alarmingly normal and recognisable. Capote has written a very clever true crime work of non-fiction, brought to us in the style of a novel. The whole thing is a bit disturbing really...and at the same time, you just can’t put it down. Into Thin Air, John Krakauer Sometimes the most extraordinary stories we read are those that are true. This is certainly the case in Krakauer’s account of 24 hours of hell at the top of Mount Everest. With photos documenting the scale of the ‘murderous storm’ that bore down on Krakauer and his fellow climbers, it’s clear to see why five lost their lives. Dealing with
the guilt that comes from surviving such a disaster whilst others didn’t, Krakauer’s writing is incredibly compelling and the retelling of the 1996 disaster will leave you gasping. The Spy Who came in from the Cold, John le Carré Spymaster le Carré’s thriller has stood the test of time with reading audiences continuing to be gripped by the powerful combination of love and betrayal that would leave Daniel Craig running crying to his mummy. Set in 1960s Berlin, spy Alex Leamas is basically ready to throw in the towel. Of course, ‘one final assignment’ always spells disaster ahead. Is this really a case of ‘mission impossible’ and will he live to walk away from this one? Frozen in Time, Ali Sparkes One for the younger readers is Ali Sparkes’ novel about two children who are ‘frozen in time’. Freddy and Polly were put into cryonic suspension in the 1950s by their father. But the experiment was only meant to be for a couple of hours; something went drastically awry. Enter Ben and Rachael, who unwittingly uncover the human ice-lollies. Suddenly it looks like the summer hols aren’t going to be so dull after all.

Focus on Movies
By Peter Stevenson
AT THE CINEMA: Thor: The Dark World 12A (112mins) Can you believe we have seen the God of Thunder in three movies in as many years? Still the comic-book to movie revolution continues. For the sequel to 2011’s simply-titled Thor, most of the main cast and crew have returned save director Kenneth Branagh, who is replaced by Alan Taylor. So, for better or worse, we are forced to go under the hammer once more (lol). The success of this movie depends on the performances of three actors: Chris Hemsworth as the eponymous Thor, Natalie Portman as his love interest Jane Foster and Anthony Hopkins as Thor’s father Odin. Hemsworth deftly breathes humanity into a super-hero who, in the wrong hands could seem utterly implausible and completely ridiculous. Portman’s Foster is a weak, forgettable character. She is supposed to be an intelligent scientist but she seems to have lost 50% of her IQ here, becoming a pitiful damsel in distress, there only to be rescued, like Mary-Jane Watson in fellow Marvel creation Spider-Man. Hopkins’ Odin is wise and sage-like and, dare I say it, understated; well at least compared to the camp monstrosity he could have been. Director Taylor injects gritty realism, believe it or not. Where Branagh delivered a thoroughly fun super-hero flick, complete with bold set-pieces, clear, crisp visuals and tongue-in-cheek humour, Yates’s movie is tense, edgy and truly threatening. Some things do jar, however: the dialogue can be clunky at times and the humour misplaced (Thor on the Underground is more funny ‘peculiar’ than funny ‘ha-ha’), but lapses aside, this is a solid movie which brings a touch of realism to an otherwise pretty frivolous franchise. 4 / 5
On DVD: Monsters’ University U (110 mins) I must admit, I have become rather disillusioned with Pixar lately. Gone is the company whose innovative stories and means of story-telling were just as important as its seminal and meticulous animation (Wall-E). Instead, we are given sequels and prequels to hugely successful movies e.g. Toy Story 3, Cars 2, or the upcoming Finding Dory. This is always a difficult way for movie-makers to go because, as well as stifling any original creativity, they must, paradoxically, create a movie which stands on its own. Firstly the animation-it is flawless; each monster looks credible and natural and there are subtle little nuances which provide extremely effective visual gags which have been tailored for each generation of movie-goer so noone feels left out. The colours and general shadowing create depth and give the characters a realistic rotundity which adds to the impression that this is a true story. The score is at perfect pitch. Randy Newman, a Pixar favourite, provides a background score which seamlessly blends with the action, petering off when it needs to and creating a robust statement when the action increases a gear. Granted, there is no stand-out song along the lines of Toy Story’s ‘You’ve Got a Friend in Me’ but the music remains a sublime accompaniment to that which is occurring on-screen. Billy Crystal and John Goodman return to lend their voices to the characters of Mike and Sully respectively and their performances are a real coup for Pixar. Each give subtle comic portrayals while providing real heart. Goodman in particular, provides maximum emotion from speeches (especially at the end) about true friendship, which could, so easily, have sounded cheesy and out of place. This is a great movie which can genuinely entertain the whole family: a daunting task! 4/ 5 36

In another of our series of articles about our local environment, Helen Long writes about her observations of nature, right here in Carryduff
Christmas trees, babies and robins are all associated with this time of year. Here, I hope to put my own, slightly different, spin on all three subjects. Beginning with trees (and not just Christmas ones), did you know that Ireland is the least wooded country in all of Europe? To remedy this, many people have been taking measures to plant more forestry, which is to be warmly applauded. I myself was delighted some years ago, when an acorn I planted in a pot germinated and grew into a small sapling. Still a relative infant, it is now growing happily in a little copse of oaks at a friend’s house near Moneyreagh. Proving that we can all do our bit to enhance our environment. The babies on my mind aren’t what you might imagine. It’s actually to the insect world that I allude. In fact, it is the micro -world on/in my garage wall. Last summer I spotted a wasp apparently busy on that very wall. On closer inspection I saw that it was working away, building a little (wellcamouflaged) ‘extension’ to the cement between two bricks. Research informed me that this was a solitary insect called a mason wasp; and what I had been lucky enough to witness was it constructing its nest, where it went on to lay its eggs, sealing them all up securely. Then, unbelievably, a couple of days later there was more action at the nest site: this time it was a ruby-tailed wasp, a parasite, which had homed in on its cousin’s nest to lay its own eggs. Although I kept an eye on the wall, I missed the moment of hatching. However, all the little holes and hollows in the cement were concrete evidence that the wasp grubs had emerged. What an amazing mystery; and I will never know whether the original mason wasp’s family made it out or were consumed by the invaders. Finally, on Christmas Day four years ago, in the middle of chemotherapy for breastcancer, I took my usual morning walk at Lough Moss. Perhaps the hard frost explained the presence of two very tame robins, one of which took some food from my hand, the other which I photographed. It was little, heart-warming wonders like these that helped me to cope with that very challenging time in my life. Long live the robin redbreast; long live babies; and long live the message of Christmas! Helen Long 38

Millennium Integrated Primary School There has been much happening the past term at Millennium with the children involved in many extracurricular sporting activities such as netball, Gaelic football, tennis, jujitsu, soccer and Monkeynastics as well as drama, music and Doodlebugs creative workshops. Our school choir has been rehearsing steadily for the Christmas carol services and nativities. The choir will be taking part in an event in the Ulster Hall on 29 th November with the Ulster Orchestra to celebrate 100 years of the music of Benjamin Britten. They will be performing Britten’s piece ‘Cuckoo’ and will be joining two other school to perform ‘Old Abram Brown’. This is a fantastic opportunity for the children and was made even more exciting when members from the Ulster Orchestra and NI Opera came to school to lead a music workshop. Huge thanks to our music teacher Wendy Ballard for making this possible and for her hard work and dedication to the choir. Our P6 class have been learning all about the building and sinking of the Titanic. Every year the parents look forward to the week when homework is to create a model of the titanic. This year was no exception and, as expected, the models are getting bigger and bigger – soon we will have a full size replica sailing through the school gates! Well done to all the class for their creativity. Upcoming events: Christmas holiday - school finishes on Friday 20th December 2013 at 12:00 and reopens at 9am on Monday 6th January 2014 Key Stage 2 Carol Service – 16th December 2013 Choir singing in Sprucefield and Forestside – 19th December 2013 Please mention the Carryduff Focus Magazine when contacting advertisers

St Joseph’s Nursery School
On Friday 8th November Debbie, from TACT Wildlife, visited Nursery and we enjoyed finding out more and exploring the animals. We particularly enjoyed the owl and the hedgehog because we have been studying nocturnal animals. “I’m petting the owl and Cara’s petting the owl. His wing flapped on our hair and it was so funny. He has lots of feathers because he’s a kind of bird. They were soft feathers. He had only one wing ‘cos he hurt himself when he went on the road. The vet looked after him but she couldn’t give him a new wing. Owls like to fly, only if they have two wings but one wing has been taken off so he can’t fly. Owls come out at night time when there’s little ‘mouses’ out. They eat the ‘mouses’ for their dinner. The mouse doesn’t run away because the owl creeps very quiet. The hedgehog comes at night too. The hedgehog couldn’t see because he got knocked down. He was all prickly and he sniffed me with his nose.” Olivia “We’re petting the owl, me and Olivia. I liked all of the animals because they were so soft but one wasn’t. The hedgehog wasn’t, he was all spiky because hedgehogs like spikes. If a badger comes they can roll up and prickle the badger’s nose. The owl was so soft. He was a barn owl. I never, ever, ever saw an owl before. He has lots of soft feathers all round him because they keep him warm in the winter. He can turn his head all round because he needs to turn his head all round because he needs to see if there’s danger, or if there’s not, behind him. Owls come out at night and look for food. Owls like mice. They catch them with their beaks. The owl swoops down and it wants to be very quiet so it doesn’t scare its food away. The mouse doesn’t hear the owl because it’s so quiet.” Cara
