to your February magazine
Hello again everyone, It’s taken me all these years to realise ‘Mardi Gras’ means Fat Tuesday. (Maybe some of you didn't realise either? Or is it just me?) It makes sense - we call it Pancake Tuesday. The idea being to have a last celebration and use up all the rich foods in the house, before lent (and abstinence) starts on Ash Wednesday. I only found this out because I was looking up the date for this year’s Pancake Tuesday, which, dear reader, you’ll be glad to know, is on Tuesday 9th February. (How did people ever manage without the internet!) If you’re making your own pancakes this year, I’d recommend adding blueberries to the mix - they almost burst in the pan as the pancake is cooking - very yummy. Check out our special offers for February below and if you’re celebrating Valentine’s Day this year, we have some Valentine’s offers & gift ideas from local businesses in this issue. The Spar in Carryduff is running a Valentine’s competition, so turn to page 28 to see how you can win a meal for two when you spend £10. A little bit of an early warning - Mother’s Day is on 6th March this year, as Easter is early. Catch you next time!

It’s easy to get Valentine’s Day wrong: nothing says “I love you” less than uncomfortable pants in the wrong size, some wilting flowers or whatever chocolates were half price in Tesco. But if your soul mate is a gadget fan, it’s very easy to get Valentine’s Day right. One of the problems of buying presents for gadget fans is that they tend to have the big things already, so for example if they fancied an Apple Watch or a Samsung Galaxy S6 they’ve almost certainly bought it for themselves. But that’s an opportunity rather than a problem, because there are stacks of accessories and add-ons that can enhance what they’ve already got. Take the Apple Watch, for example. There’s a huge range of straps including tanned and coloured leather, metal and fun coloured silicone that can completely transform its looks. Apple’s own ones are fairly nice and predictably expensive, but you don’t need to pay quite so much: metal straps from the likes of Hoco (£48) and leather ones from Nomad (around £70) look and feel fantastic, and having multiple straps means the Watch fits with any outfit from ultra -casual to seriously formal. It’s a similar story with smartphone and tablet cases, where there are
6
some fantastic designs to choose from. A woven Ted Baker case for the iPad Mini is £35, while Pipetto.co.uk’s clever Origami cases are around £30. You’ll find all kinds of household names making phone and tablet cases including Radley, Michael Kors and Aspinal of London, with prices ranging from around £12.50 for a simple Radley iPhone case to £250 for an Aspinal iPad case. Accessories aren’t just about fashion. If your beloved has a smartphone, tablet or laptop they might appreciate some Bluetooth accessories, such as Bluetooth wireless headphones - around £50 for a set of Jabra Move headphones, rising to around £200 for high-end sets from Bose - or wireless speakers, which are great for streaming music from the likes of Spotify or Apple Music at home, in the garden or on the beach when Summer finally returns. We’re big fans of the Bose Soundlink Mini (£169), but you needn’t spend that much to get great sound: Sony’s SRS-X2 is around £60, while JBL’s Flip 2 is about £50 and TDK’s tough Trek Flex is £55 - £69 depending on your choice of colours. If you’d rather give a more traditional gift, technology can still help: the Lastminute.com,
Laterooms.com, Expedia.co.uk, Kayak and SkyScanner apps can all help you find the perfect romantic getaway at the right price, while the 5pm and OpenTable apps make it easy to book a restaurant for a romantic night out - although if you’d rather impress by cooking something spectacular at home, celebrity chef apps from the likes of Jamie Oliver and Nigella Lawson can give you not just recipes but videos on how to prepare the perfect Valentine dinner. Tech can even help if you don’t currently have someone to share Valentine’s day with: online matchmaking services such as Match.com have smartphone and tablet apps to help you find Miss or Mr Right, while famous apps such as Tinder (for everyone) and Grindr (for gay or bisexual men) use location awareness to help you find potential partners near you. If that sounds a little bit scary, apps such as Hitch enable friends to play matchmaker, limiting the pool of potential suitors to people your friends already know.

ď‚
1 x 375g pack ready -rolled puff pastry
ď‚
4 tbsp caster sugar
ď‚
1 tsp cinnamon (optional)
TIP For savoury palmiers, spread the pastry with a little pesto sauce, then scatter over finely grated Parmesan cheese instead of the sugar.
Unroll the puff pastry sheet and trim the edges to a neat rectangle, if necessary. Sprinkle over 2 tbsp of the caster sugar and half the cinnamon (if using). Using a rolling pin, gently roll over the sugar to lightly press it into the pastry. Fold in the long sides of the pastry rectangle halfway towards the centre. Sprinkle over a little more caster sugar and press down with the rolling pin. Fold each long side in again to meet in the centre. Sprinkle with the rest of the sugar and cinnamon (if using), then fold the pastry in half lengthways to form one long strip. Transfer to a board and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 220C/425F/Gas 7. Dampen a large baking sheet by sprinkling with cold water. Cut across the chilled pastry length into about 28 thin slices. Place the slices, cut-side down, on the baking sheet. Flatten each one slightly with the palm of your hand. Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes, until crisp and golden brown. Turn each slice over with a palette knife halfway through cooking. Transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool.

Watching wild birds in your garden is a real delight, and as many help to keep pests at bay for much of the year it makes sense to encourage them in. You can provide a haven for wild birds as long as you have a fair number of potential hiding places, such as a few good sized shrubs or trees - and trees which provide berries or other fruits are always going to be welcome.
not freeze for long periods of time. Other garden water features, including ponds with shallow sloping sides, are also perfect for many birds to feed and bathe in. Providing birds with additional food materials is worthwhile, but remember to provide a constant supply or they may come to rely on something that is not there when they need it most.
But what else can you do to encourage your feathered friends into the garden? A source of water really is one of the best features, so either buy an ornamental birdbath or create one from a shallow dish with sloping sides. The water should be no deeper than 2” (5 cm) and if you do have a deeper container then you should fill the lower depths of it with good sized stones, to reduce the depth. Ideally the water should be changed every other day, but at this time of year it is essential to make sure that the water does
If you have a problem with squirrels, then use a squirrel proof feeder – they resemble bird cages and hold a central cylinder of peanuts, though they can cost up to £40. If squirrels are not a problem, use a cheaper nut feeder, but position it so it is out of range of cats.

trapped in the net. You can also buy grubs and larvae to feed the birds. These high protein snacks are particularly useful once birds start feeding their young in the spring, and are best distributed on a bird table or even on a garage roof. They are available by mail order or from garden centres and pet shops.
If you feel like making or buying a bird table on which to set out the feasts you are supplying, then so much the better. Choose one which is not easily accessible by cats, and position it where you can watch the birds as they feed and drink. I mainly feed the birds on top of an old, established hedge. It is just tall Save household scraps for the enough for me to reach its flat birds too; they enjoy apples, clipped top surface and I put out cooked rice, cheese, old bird food on flat wooden trays – breakfast cereal, raisins and perfect for me to view and sultanas and, of course, bread. impossible for cats to get the Buy fat balls which contain mixed wrong idea about who is meant seeds and hang them from trees to be eating! or large shrubs where they will Visit Pippa’s website provide a fantastic meal for www.pippagreenwood.com for ‘Grow many birds and, provided you Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ fantastic UK grown vegetable plants of position them correctly, means that you can also enjoy watching your choice plus weekly advice and tips emails, biological controls, fleece, them. Large astro turfed play areas and an orchard allow us to spend time outdoors in all weathers with nature walks, sensory and messy play on offer. Our full size Tipee and specially designed play houses incorporated into the outside areas stimulate the children's imagination and offer reading and play areas. All meals provided are home-cooked using local produce. We strive to channel the individual talents and abilities of the children within our care to develop their natural creativity & inquisitive minds. Personal development is fundamental to our approach as we should never shrink from the challenge of learning new things.

Nature Focus In another of a new series of articles about our local environment, Helen Long writes about her observations of nature a bit further afield, outside Carryduff. This month Helen visits Minnowburn.... Although Edenderry and Minnowburn sit cheek by jowl with each other on the banks of the Lagan, the origin of their names couldn’t be more different. Perhaps that says much about the blend of our contrasting Ulster cultures! While the former has Irish roots, the name of Minnowburn obviously implies Anglo-Scottish origins, the word burn being Scots for a stream (cf also Purdysburn). Ah, but both are endowed with equal amounts of beauty and charm! If you want a relatively short walk, then park at Minnowburn car park (with its narrow entrance and quaint little bridge) and take the towpath along by the Lagan to Shaw’s Bridge. You’re guaranteed beautiful scenery, and if you cross over at the Bridge you could walk along the tarmacked towpath on the opposite side of the river. There’s something for everyone here, and you can travel as long or as short a distance as you wish. If you head downstream, you will arrive at the Lock-keeper’s Inn, where you might partake of some refreshment, either inside or outdoors. Heading upstream will bring you eventually to Edenderry, where you may climb the steps and cross the bridge to come back on the other side of the river. Edenderry Bridge is my least favourite, seeming to have been built on a budget, if its appearance is anything to go by, but I suppose it served its purpose. I’ve mentioned three bridges, but there are actually four in this stretch, since the new Shaw’s one was built in 1976 to replace the older 1709 version. I thought it would be interesting to take a snap of the old viewed from underneath the new: something to reflect on!! The very first bridge here was of wood, built by Moses Hill, who also built a fort where Malone House stands today. Shaw’s Bridge got its name from Captain John Shaw, Cromwell’s engineer, who (in 1655) built a strong oak bridge capable of carrying heavy siege artillery, as the English army heading south needed to ford the Lagan at this point. In the light of history, the people of Drogheda might well have preferred to name it A Bridge too Far… The little Minnowburn Bridge is about three centuries old, but all the more beautiful for that, with the water babbling busily below. There’s a chance to see dippers here, and I was lucky enough to spot one recently, flying out from under the bridge and upstream. That was a wonderful first for me The Minnowburn has been a popular area for visitors for centuries, and children used to regularly fish for the very minnows that gave the stream its name. I have yet to see the same activity happening today, but we can always hope!

When caring for your dog, it’s easy to overlook their paws unless they are limping, but it’s important to make sure that nothing gets lodged in their pads or stuck in the ‘web’ between their toes.
1 Sheets + Overs LOC98374 Carryduff Magazine Sig 2 Back
It’s an easy routine though, and consists of just three steps: • Checking regularly for signs of damage or soreness Although puncture wounds may not be immediately visible because of the dark colour of your dog’s pads, if anything has
caused damage the dog will pull away or show signs of discomfort when you touch their feet. Regular checks after each outing will help to prevent infection building up in broken skin, and identify damaged or split claws. • Bathing To flush out any sand or small objects, dip each paw into a shallow container of water and pat dry. Sand in particular causes discomfort if not removed after a walk on the beach, and sharp shells can easily cut the paws. • Keep fur trimmed This is especially important for longhaired breeds with lots of fur
Gregg's of Carryduff
between their pads. Keeping it short allows you to see any damage to the paw, and makes the dog more comfortable when walking. You can buy special creams and waxes to protect your dog’s paws from harsh winter weather, and also from becoming blistered in the summer heat. A damaged paw will put a halt to their activities and can mean an expensive visit to the vet, so prevention is certainly cheaper than cure. http://uk.pedigree.com/health-and-training/caringfor-your-dog/looking-after-your-puppys-paws http://theilovedogssite.com/5-must-know-tips-fortaking-care-of-your-dogs-paws/

HEART RESEARCH UK is a national charity which has been funding ground-breaking medical research into the prevention, treatment and cure of heart disease for nearly 50 years now. Current projects include a study at the University of Cambridge to develop a heart attack prediction test, as well as supporting a children’s rehab project which is being rolled out at various pilot sites across the UK including Great Ormond Street Hospital. Coronary heart disease is still the UK’s biggest single killer with nearly 75,000 deaths a year, so Heart Research UK is trying to prevent people getting the illness in the first place, with a range of activities to ensure that those in communities around the UK live healthier, happier and longer lives. Heart Research UK is hosting “In Memory” skydives this year, such as a “Jump for your Mum on Mother’s Day” opportunity on 6th March, or a “Jump for your Dad on Father’s Day” on 19th June, or indeed another date which is sentimental to you could also be available. months Children from Carryduff Play Care Centre Have been working in collaboration with Community Arts Partnership to create a ‘Super’ piece of work! The children in the Afterschool made art that was inspired by their Superheroes. They used different techniques to expand their imaginations, such as movement, story making, collage, painting and drawing, the group was lead by artist Carole Kane. Some of these heroes live at home with the participants, go to school with them or are even amongst the artists within the group.
ST JOSEPH’S PRIMARY SCHOOL Big congratulations to both Oliver and Isabel Burrows on receiving their Blue Peter Badges. Oliver has been credited for inspiring his sister Isabel to take up a new sport. He has taught his sister the basic skills of how to play football and has encouraged her to keep healthy and active. This is a terrific achievement and they both should be really proud.
Their work will be on show at the Island Arts Centre, Lisburn during February and then will on tour around various locations around Carryduff!
