Welcome
to your February magazine
Contents
Hello again everyone,
Articles & Features:
February has always been a special month in our house. No, dear reader, not because of Valentine’s Day as you might imagine, but because both our adult children’s birthdays are at the end of February. In fact, they are just a day apart. This year, their birthdays fall on a Monday and Tuesday and they’re both flying home for a long weekend so we can all celebrate together. As they’re both working now, days off are to be hoarded, planned for, mulled over and spent wisely, so it will feel special - a bit like Christmas again. I’m really looking forward to it.

Among the special offers this month, there are some Valentine’s offers from our local eateries for that special evening out - The Beechill Inn and the Ivanhoe are running special menus and don't forget Eight South! Need some pampering beforehand? Have a look at the beauty offers from Chic Beauty and Factor 1, and Joseph Scott Hairdressing are offering 20% off hair appointments. That’s Valentine’s sorted! Also of note this month, is Pancake Tuesday - this year it’s on February 28th, which happens to be my daughters birthday. I wonder if she’d be happy with pancakes instead of birthday cake? Not a chance! Have a great month. Until next time! Valentine’s Day has been with us for a long time: it was first associated with courtly love in the 14th century, and by the 18th century it had become very like the Valentine’s Day we celebrate today - lovers would share flowers, cards and confectionery to demonstrate their affection for each other. Today we still do much the same, although the cards are rarely handwritten and the flowers might be ordered online and delivered by a man in a van, but today’s lovers have another kind of gift to gladly give: gadgets! First things first: don’t make the mistake of buying a ‘pinkified’ version of a supposedly male thing, such as a pink power drill, for the person you love. Drills aren’t romantic no matter what colour they happen to be, or how keen on DIY your partner is. And if you’re thinking of buying your partner a wearable device such as a Fitbit fitness tracker, you need to be 100% sure the message you’re sending isn’t going to be interpreted as “you’re lazy!” or even worse, “you’re too fat!”
edge camera phone. There’s something magical about the prints that today’s selfies don’t quite deliver, and it’s a fun way to record your Valentine’s Day celebrations.
headphones that connect to its Lightning socket instead of a traditional headphone socket. That way if the adapter gets lost, which it will, the music doesn’t have to stop.
If your partner is the techy type already, there’s a good chance that he or she already has the technology they want - and that’s an opportunity for you, because there are all kinds of accessories for their most commonly used items, including gorgeous leather cases for phones and tablets, luxury bands for smartwatches and all kinds of cases and protectors. Just watch out if you’re buying leather, as many cheaper accessories use ‘bonded leather’, which is more like vinyl. Real leather looks, smells and ages better than man-made bonded leather does.
Another good option for music fans is a Bluetooth speaker, which can take music from any source iPad, laptop or phone - and play it back for hours between recharges. There’s a dizzying range to choose from, including the superb Denon Envaya Mini (£99), which sounds better than speakers twice the price, and the Sumvision Psyc Monic (£38), which delivers incredible bass response. And if your partner’s something of a water baby, the £9.99 SoundBot HD speaker is designed to work in the shower. It even has hands-free calling via your phone, which strikes us as a really terrible idea, but with a range of 33 feet it means enjoying music without having to worry about expensive electronic devices getting soaked. Who knows, you might even get away with buying the pink one.
There are plenty of electronic accessories too. If your loved one is a music fan, the headphones that came with his or her phone probably aren’t up to much - so even a relatively inexpensive pair of headphones can deliver a The best Valentine’s Day gifts are massive upgrade to the sound things you can share, such as the quality. Just watch out if your excellent Polaroid ZIP mobile partner has an iPhone 7, as that printer. At £99 it isn’t cheap, but doesn’t have a headphone socket; what it delivers is priceless: oldit does come with an adapter but school Polaroids from your cutting- the best option is to buy

• 3 tbsp olive oil, plus extra to drizzle • 2 large onions, peeled and thinly sliced • 2 tsp brown sugar • 2 x 145g packets pizza base mix • 2 tsp fresh chopped rosemary leaves, plus 1 tbsp small sprigs • 2 x 100g round goats’ cheeses, sliced • 5 cherry tomatoes, halved
Instead of the caramelised onions, spread the pizza base with sun-dried tomato paste then top with some cooked and drained spinach. Scatter over diced mozzarella cheese, grated parmesan cheese and some fresh chopped oregano.
32
Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan and add the onions. Fry over a gentle heat for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened. Add the sugar and fry for a further 10 minutes until golden brown. Leave to cool. Preheat the oven to 220C, Fan 200C, Gas Mark 7. Empty both sachets of the pizza base mix into a large bowl and stir in a large pinch of salt and the chopped rosemary leaves. Stir in 200ml hand-hot water and mix to a soft dough. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. Roll the dough out to a 30 x 45cm oblong. Place on a greased baking sheet and turn up the edges of the base. Spread the caramelised onions over the base, then top with the sliced goats’ cheese, cherry tomatoes and rosemary sprigs. Leave in a warm place for 10 minutes. Drizzle with olive oil and season with a little salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper. Bake for 15-20 minutes until the base is golden brown.

Nature Focus In another of a new series of articles about our local environment, Helen Long writes about her observations of nature a bit further afield, outside Carryduff. This month Helen visits Ormeau Park.... Instead of heading out across country, this time I’m going down the road towards Belfast. Call it a kind of memory trail for me, if you like. For the first four years of my life, home was in Florenceville Avenue, off the Ormeau road. One of our childhood treats was going for a walk and being lifted up to sit on one of the two lions at the entrance to Ormeau Park. Apart from a Peace Rally in the 1970s, I hadn’t been back there for over 60 years—until today… Of course, when we return to our childhood haunts, nothing is ever the same: the past is indeed a foreign country; and this was what I found in Ormeau Park. Yes, the pair of lions were still there, but oh how ravaged by the silent artillery of time. And surely they hadn’t been as small and low as these two specimens before me? Their glossy brown coats were long gone, and their once majestic faces had been eroded and distorted beyond recognition. How are the mighty fallen, I thought… A sudden movement jolted me back into the present, and there, scampering up a nearby tree, was a grey squirrel! I marvelled, as it broke off a bunch of ash keys, removed the seeds and discarded the wings, which fluttered down around me like sudden snowflakes. That was a truly magical moment, which more than made up for the diminished lions. Ormeau Park is a wonderful facility for everyone to enjoy: dog walkers, cyclists, joggers, or people just keen on getting in contact with nature, particularly if they don’t have a garden of their own. There’s also a BMX track and orienteering course! As well as the squirrels, there’s plenty of other wildlife. I heard several robins piping their thin territorial songs, and I also stalked a pied wagtail, who kept just far enough ahead to avoid getting photographed. ‘Ormeau’ is French in origin and means ‘young elm tree’. As I wandered further into the park there were many trees to admire, some of which must have once been the very elm saplings which gave the park its name over 150 years ago. Viewing them in winter affords the opportunity to see and admire their structure, to marvel at the delicate grace of the weeping willow, or feel the rough texture of the bark on some of the older fir trees. There’s a lovely Victorian bandstand, which I plan to revisit in the summer when there is a band in situ. In the meantime, I have contacted the Council, to ask if the lions can be restored to their former glory. Those noble beasts, and the worthy citizens of south Belfast, deserve nothing less!
Helen Long

PSNI MESSAGE PSNI encourage victims of domestic abuse to make 2017 a year of change Following on from the PSNI’s Domestic Abuse Christmas Campaign, police in South Area are encouraging victims of domestic abuse to make 2017 a year of change. The focus of the Christmas campaign was, ‘domestic abuse is wrong, pick up the phone and make it stop’. Police in South Area want this momentum to continue and want to encourage victims to continue coming forward and reporting. Superintendent Sean Wright said: “No one deserves to be abused. It is wrong and we want to help all victims end the cycle of abuse. “Domestic abuse is a terrifying crime which can affect anyone, regardless of their background, economic status, class or gender. Abuse can make you feel helpless, isolated and alone but please be assured that you are not and that we are here to help you. It only takes the small step of picking up the phone and contacting us and we will be able to offer you support. “We work closely with our partner agencies to ensure the victims get the help they deserve, to highlight the issue of Domestic Abuse and to explore ways in which we can keep communities safer. “No one has to suffer in silence, please help us to stop abuse and phone us on 101 or 999 in an emergency.”
ST JOSEPH’S PRIMARY SCHOOL On Friday 2nd December it was great to see so many children taking part in Ditch the Dark Day. Both children and parents followed the theme ‘Be Bright, Be Seen’ very well by arriving to school in super bright and creative outfits. Many thanks to everyone who participated and helped us raise awareness of travelling safely in the dark mornings and evenings. The children entertained the Senior Citizens from Castlereagh Lifestyle Forum’s Engage With Age group on 8th December in Lough Moss Leisure Centre. The children played a selection of Christmas Carols on violin and then joined with the audience to sing some old favourites like Rudolf and Jingle Bells. CARR PRIMARY SCHOOL A puppet show provided great entertainment as well as valuable learning at Carr Primary School. Some pupils got to try on hats from around the world and learn about traditions there. (Pictured left are Caleb, Megan, Hannah, Cory, Josh and Gabriel). A big thank you to the parents of one of our pupils, Mr and Mrs Shaw who put on such a wonderful show. Victorian Christmas at Castle Ward P6/7 pupils enjoyed a trip to Castle Ward to discover how Christmas was celebrated in Victorian times. (Pictured on the right, are Josh, Jude, Zara, Robynne and Jack wearing traditional weaved masks.) ST JOSEPH’S PRIMARY SCHOOL The pupils in both Primary Five classes visited Drumbo Tower. “This is the tower on our school crest. We wanted to go and see it because we have been studying the area around Carryduff as our World Around Us topic. The tower is about 1200 or 1600 years old. It was built so that people could go inside and protect themselves and their stuff from raiders who may attack. It is a really interesting place to visit. Although it was a damp, cold day for our trip, most of us agreed that it was well worth seeing this place for real rather than just looking at the photos.” 40

MILLENNIUM INTEGRATED PRIMARY SCHOOL Last term all the boys and girls from P3 to P7 at Millennium went on a sponsored walk for Action MS around Delamont Country Park. The weather was very kind to us as it was dry and calm and not too cold. The children did a big loop around the hills of Delamont and up to the Millennium Stone. As we made our way back towards the car park, the younger children were able to stop and have their juice and a biscuit while the older children continued their walk for another while. They were certainly ready for their break when we returned to the start! We were delight to be able to present the representatives of Action MS with a cheque for more than £3800. What a fantastic amount. Many thanks to all our families for supporting such a worthy cause and to the children for representing our school so well at Delamont. Some of our top fundraisers have been invited to a special lunch to acknowledge their contribution. Well done to Louiza, Rabeekah, Patrick, Eirinn, Emma, Yasmine and Matthew.
