Well, I’m trying to kick start January with a health and fitness special in this issue, plus not one, but two competitions! It’s a bit like buses, you wait for ages, and then 2 come along at once. You can win a pair of cinema tickets (I’ve 3 to give away, courtesy of Movie House Cinemas on page 34) and if you drive, you can win a free service for your vehicle (courtesy of Lough Moss Motors on page 29).

If you’ve over indulged during the festive season, our health and fitness section might be the motivation you need to start something new. We’ve pilates, yoga, vibration plates, jive classes, golf and activities at Lough Moss Leisure Centre advertising in this issue, and there’s lots more going on locally, so no excuses now!

It’s also the peak time for joining a slimming club - you can see the Slimming World ad on page 10 and the Weight Watchers ad on page 15. Add to that some brilliant offers from our local beauty salons and hairdressers who are all vying for your business in the bleak month of January. It’s a good time to treat yourself to a pampering facial (see the offers on the Factor 1 ad on page 14 and the Chic Beauty Clinic ad on page 21) or a new haircut (Keith Kane’s ad is on page 20 and Riah’s ad is on page 27). Whatever you get up to, have a great month.

Keep on Moving part 1 We all know we should be exercising, as part of a healthy lifestyle, but a shocking statistic reveals that 63% of the UK population don’t do the recommended 150 minutes of exercise per week It might surprise you to know we’re not even talking about going to the gym. How active you are in day to day activities matters just as much as an exercise class. Gardening or walking to the shops count too. And the really good news is that it doesn't matter if you’re a late starter. A recently published report showed that even taking up exercise in your 60s can bring really positive benefits. Lead investigator Dr Mark Hamer from University College London, said: "The take-home message really is to keep moving when you are over 60. It's a cliche, but it's a case of use it or lose it. You do lose the benefits if you don't remain active." The study in the British Journal of Sports Medicine followed 3,500 healthy people at or around retirement age. Those who took up exercise were three times more likely to remain healthy over the next eight years than their sedentary peers.

Exercise cut the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease and depression, and the participants were less likely to struggle with day-today activities such as washing and dressing. So those of you thinking of starting an exercise regime in the New Year can take hope - no matter what your age, it’s never too late. Have a look at the various types of exercise in our local area, you’re sure to find something that suits, whether it’s yoga, pilates, walking, going to the gym or swimming. Give it a go!

Keep on Moving part 2 The UK has the third most inactive population in Europe. Apparently as a nation, we hate exercise so much we would rather do chores like ironing, laundry, clearing out the garage or even our tax returns than do physical activity. The amount of activity required to be healthy is not huge. You need to do a total of two-and-a-half hours a week (or five x 30 minutes) of moderate intensity, where you breathe faster, get warm and feel your heart beating quickly. There are 168 hours in one week, so this doesn't seem to be asking too much, does it? Fortunately, the evidence shows that doing 10-minute blocks of moderate-tovigorous activity also works. If you are doing vigorous activity, then 75 minutes a week will do - but ideally you should be active every day. You are more likely to stay fit if the exercise becomes part of your everyday life, for example walking or cycling to work, taking the stairs instead of the lift or even getting off the bus one or two stops earlier to walk part of the way.
Learn to Jive Classes commence: Wednesday 8th January 8:30pm to 9:30pm Venue to be decided, in Moneyreagh
ÂŁ5 per class
Have fun and exercise, at the same time! For more details and to reserve your place, please ring Jennifer on 07912 620 177
Under 5s It is not just adults who need to take exercise. As soon as your child can walk, they should also be encouraged to run, skip and jump. There is some evidence that under-fives spend so much time restrained in cars and buggies that they are at risk of being unfit or overweight before school age. School Age Children and Teens Between the ages of five and 18, research suggests an hour of exercise a day is needed – anathema to most teenagers. But exercise at this age promotes strong bones and muscles and reduces the risk of being overweight.

St Joseph’s Primary School new School Council has had its first meeting. Council Chairman, Conn, welcomed the new Primary 5 representatives on board. No time was wasted as the children put forward their views and ideas for this year. Niamh was busy taking minutes of all that was discussed and agreed. Already the Council are working on a few tasks. They are ordering new play equipment and have suggested that P7 prefects should become involved to ensure equipment is used properly and well looked after. The Council are organising a fund raising day with proceeds going to Trócaire who are supporting those affected by the disaster in Syria and in The Philippines. They have also planned their own Advent Calendar with a different thought/action for each day leading up to Christmas. So we have a lot to look forward to in the coming weeks as the School Council put their plans into action! Please mention the Carryduff Focus Magazine when contacting advertisers

Focus on Movies
By Peter Stevenson
AT THE CINEMA: Carrie 15 (100mins) Adaptations of Stephen King novels have had mixed experiences at the box office. From the successful: ’Salem’s Lot, Cujo, The Dead Zone to the wildly successful: Misery, & The Shawshank Redemption so it seems almost inevitable that, during this recent Hollywood fad of remakes and reboots, King’s debut novel, and arguably one of the most popular adaptations, save The Shining, should be given a 21st Century makeover. Forever embedded in today’s pop-culture psyche, King’s 1974 fright-fest revolves around teenage outcast Carrie White (Chloe Grace Moretz), perpetually bullied and the butt of every joke going. Her home life offers no relief as her religious fanatic of a mother (Julianne Moore) constantly finds fault in her daughter, for which she adamantly insists Carrie must seek forgiveness by being locked in a cupboard and forced to pray. Carrie then discovers her supernatural ability: telekinesis. Moretz’s performance is solid; her eyes hold desperation and a deep-seated fear for the first two-thirds of the film, which genuinely endear her to the audience. It is in the final third, however, where things go awry. Carrie relishes too much in her acts of demonic revenge. Rather than simply in self-defence, albeit in spectacular fashion, she indulges in cold, steely retaliation. Therefore, as an audience, we have lost any sympathy we had for her. Moore, as Carrie’s vindictive mother, is quietly insidious as she participates in self-flagellation as a means of religious catharsis, and lurks to pounce on every chance at normality that Carrie gets. Moore is a talented actress and can turn her hand to many different roles but one cannot help but feel that she does not hit the right note to make her character ring true. A lot of things have changed for the better since 1976; this isn’t one of them. 3 / 5
On DVD: Man of Steel 12A (143 mins) DC comics must thank its lucky stars every time director Christopher Nolan agrees to come aboard one of its flagging franchises. After director Joel Schumacher all but killed the Batman movie-franchise, Nolan resuscitated it, bringing it back from the brink of oblivion and creating the epic and blockbusting The Dark Knight trilogy. Now he takes the reins from Bryan Singer, whose only Superman movie, Superman Returns, proved that the only surviving Son of Krypton needed to branch out in new directions. Surely Nolan is the right person for this job, isn’t he? Conspicuous by his absence, Lex Luthor is not the villain of the piece. This falls to Zod, he who was banished for political treason on Krypton, only to exact his revenge on the son of his incarcerator some 33 years later on Earth. Forget Terence Stamp’s ambivalent incarnation, here Zod, as depicted by Michael Shannon, is fuelled only by malevolence. The antithesis of this baddie in every way stands Clark Kent (Henry Cavill), a character who, when first encountered, is in turmoil, confused and frightened about who he is and where he came from. His identity remains in flux for the majority of the film; indeed he is not dubbed ‘Superman’ until around 120 of the movie’s 143 minutes have elapsed. Cavill struggles at times to reconcile the Clark Kent/Superman divide but there are times when he seems fully in control of himself and the situation around him. Other main characters like Lois Lane, Perry White, Jonathan Kent and Jor-El prove the biggest disappointment, each reimagining gives credence to the phrase ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’. These are relatively small draw-backs when we look at the movie as a whole; this ‘superfranchise’ has been given a much-needed wake-up call! 4/ 5 38

Millennium Integrated Primary School It’s hard to believe that our first term has already finished and what a busy term it has been. Our Nursery children looked wonderful in the Christmas Nativity, P1 entertained us with their Christmas story – Born in a Barn, and P2 and P3 together were fantastic in their play ‘The Bossy King’. The older children from P4 to P7 took part in a Christmas Carol Service. Many thanks to Carryduff Baptist Church for making us so welcome yet again this year. Congratulations to all our children for taking part in a Singathon and Danceathon to raise money for Children in Need. We managed to raise £300. Well done to Mrs Ballard and Mrs Mathieson for leading the singing & dancing.
Nursery Christmas Shows 6th December 2013
Carr Primary School Congratulations to all pupils from Carr Primary School who took part in this years Christmas Production "Underneath the Shining Star". A very talented cast and choir put on a great show! (below)
Our Parent’s Council have been busy fundraising this term and have been able raise money to support and improve facilities in our Sensory room. Some of the events they have organised this term have included a Halloween Disco for the children and a table quiz compered by Johnny Hero of U105 for the parents. The highlight this term has to be the Christmas Market which was a great success. There were stalls selling home wares, jewellery, handbags, Christmas crafts, cakes and lots more. Hopefully next year’s market will be even bigger and better!
School will reopen on Monday 6th Jan 2014. We will be holding an open morning on Wed 8th Jan 2014 from 9.30 to 11.00 for prospective P1 and Nursery parents. Please feel free to come and take a look at the facilities on offer throughout the school. 40

St Joseph’s Primary School
PSNI Advice
The Primary Seven pupils last year left us with more than brilliant memories. In March, as part of our Famine project, they planted potatoes in the Eco garden.
Following a number of reports of so-called 'distraction burglars' in Carryduff and the surrounding area local police would like to offer some advice on dealing with unexpected callers to your home.
Our current Primary Seven Eco Committee harvested the crop and we ate them today. They went down well with butter or mayo and a few chopped home grown onions. Delicious!
The first thing to remember is NEVER to let a complete stranger into your home without being 100% certain of their identity. Use your peep hole or security chain if you have these. If not, consider having them installed. Ask ALL callers for proof of ID. Inspect their credentials carefully and ensure the photo is theirs. Genuine callers will be glad to show you their identification and will not mind waiting until you have checked that they are who they say they are. For added peace of mind you can telephone QuickCheck 24/7 for free on 0800 013 22 90 and they will check the caller at your door is legitimate.
Lough Moss Karate-Do WadoKai Club was strongly represented at the NI Karate Board championships in the Antrim Forum lifting 5 medals in kata and kumite. Wado Ryu Karate is for males and females of all ages. It improves co-ordination, balance &, timing, develops concentration & awareness, and builds agility & flexibility. Free introductory class on Saturdays 10:30 -11:30am at Lough Moss Leisure Centre. For more information call Paul on 07766 528046
Do not feel pressured into just letting a caller in because it can feel awkward to ask questions. This is your home, if you have any doubt, keep them out!! Neighbours can also play a vital part in helping protect the more vulnerable in their community against this kind of crime. Look out for suspicious vehicles and people and report ALL suspicious activity to police. The number to call is 0845 600 8000 or in an emergency dial 999.
We would also like to remind householders of the importance of a good household security routine. Make it a habit to always close and lock external doors and windows when going out and when going to bed. Take keys out of the door and don't leave car keys or valuables where they can be seen through windows. Use timer switches for lamps - in the darker evenings they will help your property look occupied even if you aren't home. Further crime prevention advice can be obtained by visiting the PSNI website at www.psni.police.uk or by emailing your local neighbourhood Policing team at NPTCarryduff@psni.pnn.police.uk
