to your July/Aug magazine
Hello again everyone, Isn’t Summer just the best time of year? Not just because it’s warm and allegedly sunny, but I get a whole month off! This is the July/August double issue, so please do hold onto it right through the Summer. You’ll get the next issue (for September) at the end of August. As soon as this issue hits the streets, I can relax and do all those little jobs I’ve been putting off because ‘I don't have time!’ So there’s a huge pile of papers in my office that need sorted, stuff in my son’s room that he doesn’t want in his new place, but he doesn’t want to throw out either (!) and we’re getting some decorating done, which will mean moving clutter out of one room and then back again (maybe). The husband has been going great guns, following on from his major success in tidying the garage - he’s now in the final stages of tackling the front garden. Even my daughter, due home soon from Edinburgh (not here yet as she’s having such a great time away from home!) is planning to gut her bedroom & repaint. The observant among you will have noticed I didn't say anything about it being a ‘holiday’ - just that it’s a month off! Hopefully I’ll get time to put my feet up too! Whatever you’re getting up to in July and August, enjoy it and please make use of our great What’s On guide for events in Belfast and beyond. Have a great Summer. Until next time....

Humanity could probably survive without LED barbecue lights or USB coffee cup warmers. But technology can help to keep us safe as well as keep us pampered, and a growing army of gadgets is designed to do just that. One of the most interesting safety gadgets is the £89 Nest Protect, a smart smoke detector. The Protect can tell the difference between burnt toast and a serious problem, and it can warn you of problems by sending a message to your phone. The Nest Protect is part of a growing trend of home automation, with both Google and Apple encouraging firms to make devices that connect to our phones and help keep us safe. That doesn’t just mean sounding smoke alarms and keeping an eye on our houses. It can also mean keeping your kids safe. The My Buddy Tag (£39) is a smartwatch that alerts you if your child starts to wander off, or if it’s submerged in water for more than ten seconds. It connects to your phone via Bluetooth and you can have more than one tag if you’re looking after more than one child.
6
Products such as the Cuff smart bracelet (from around £40 via the US) are designed to share notifications from your phone, but they also have an alert mode that enables you to contact friends, family or colleagues in an emergency without having to reach for your phone. The US$120 Guardian Angel is based on a similar idea but takes a different approach: if you’re feeling uncomfortable you give it a little squeeze and it calls your phone so you can pretend you’ve been called away. Expect to see lots more such products as the interest in wearable technology increases this year, especially now the Apple Watch is on sale: developers are already working on health, safety and security apps for Apple’s wearable wonder. If you’ve ever left the house and realised you’d left something switched on, technology can help with that too. Belkin’s WeMo (from about £35) are internetconnected switches that you can automate - for example you can set heaters to go on and off according to the weather forecast or make music start playing if a WeMo with a motion detector
spots movement. They also enable you to remotely switch off anything you’d left on by mistake. Fitting your house with a bunch of WeMo switches isn’t cheap, but the price of this kind of product is already falling fast. It’s just a matter of time before internetconnected switches are almost as cheap as their traditional equivalents. Gadgets can keep you safe on the move, too. The Blaze Laserlight is £125 before you start adding accessories, but it might just save your life. It’s a waterproof, USBchargeable bike light that uses a laser to project an image of a bike six metres in front of you. That means it warns pedestrians and drivers that you’re near, eradicating the blind spots that result in so many cycling injuries (and bumped pedestrians). LED lights that make bike wheels look like circular neon signs and paint that makes bikes shine brightly in the dark go on sale later this year. Images left to right: Nest Protect smart smoke alarm; My Buddy Tag smartwatch for children; Guardian Angel safety jewellery; Blaze Laserlight bicycle safety light

OPTIMUM HEALTH Fa m i l y W e l l b e i n g C e n t r e Speech Therapist turned Acupuncturist and Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner, Barbara Ellis, has helped many people move towards a life free from pain with a combination of Bespoke Body Work developed from Traditional Chinese Massage (TCM) and Acupuncture, Western techniques and Diagnostics. With the use of the Posture Pro and Acugraph analysis tools, she has introduced an integrative service to empower people to the principles of leading a pain free life, reduce stress and gain well-being. “I know what it is like to live with illness. As a young child I was constantly ill, so much so, that I missed the equivalent of 2 years of schooling at primary school. When I eventually had my tonsils removed at the age of 10, my health did improve but I had all kinds of problems related to taking antibiotics for many years.” Barbara suffered bowel discomfort, joint pain and had a severe lack of energy throughout her teens. At that time she had no knowledge that there was a different way of treating these problems other than the Western way, which involved ingesting more antibiotics and pain killers. Barbara also knew what it was like to live with back pain following two damaged discs which resulted in her needing to use a wheelchair. “Everything was such an effort, but in 2007 I discovered Tui Na Deep Tissue Massage and Acupuncture and Qigong. These three disciplines of TCM were fundamental to helping me to feel well again.” In the past seven years since training in these disciplines, Barbara has never felt better. “My goal in life now is to help people value their health, become more mobile and work towards creating the perfect pain relief and wellness plan for individuals of all ages”. Barbara has gone on to develop knowledge in other techniques such as ‘The Emmett Muscle Release Programme’ and it is the combination of all of the above that enables her to produce a bespoke plan just for you.

Heat 1 tbsp of the oil in a frying pan and fry the chopped onion over a medium heat for 8-10 minutes until soft and golden. Add the garlic, spring onions and carrots and fry, stirring, for a further 2-3 minutes. Stir in the chilli powder.
• 3 tbsp olive oil • 1 large red onion, peeled and finely chopped • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • 4 spring onions, trimmed and finely chopped • 1 carrot, peeled and grated • 2 tsp chilli powder • 2 x 400g cans mixed bean salad, drained and rinsed • 100g canned sweetcorn, drained • 100g fresh breadcrumbs • 1 large egg • 1 tbsp lime juice • 4 tbsp fresh chopped coriander (or parsley) • Toasted burger buns, baby spinach leaves and sliced tomatoes, to serve
20
Tip all the beans into a large bowl and roughly mash with a fork. Stir in the onion mixture along with the remaining ingredients and mix well to combine. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Divide and shape the mixture into 8 burgers. Cover and chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes. Heat the rest of the oil in a large non-stick frying pan over a medium heat and fry the burgers for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown (you may need to do this in two batches so add a little more oil, if needed). Drain on kitchen paper then serve in toasted burgers buns with spinach leaves and sliced tomatoes. The uncooked burgers freeze well, just place on a lined baking tray and freeze until solid then pack away into freezer bags. To cook from frozen, place the burgers on a lined baking tray, brush lightly with oil and bake for 25-30 minutes at 200C, fan 180C, Gas 6 until golden and piping hot.

Hire car charges There are several ways to save money on hiring a car: Book early to get the best deals Include car hire in your package deal Organise your own Collision Damage Waiver add-on Many hire car operators adopt a ‘hard sell’ approach in relation to CDW when you pick the car up, as this is the way they make their profit - by selling add-ons to ‘basic’ insurance. Airport parking As with car hire, booking early is the best way to save on airport parking. Even pre-booking on the day of the flight could save you a little money. Turning up at the car park is guaranteed to be the most expensive. Nature Focus In another of our series of articles about our local environment, Helen Long writes about her observations of nature, right here in Carryduff If Carryduff wanted to advertise itself for the tourist industry, it could do no better than to go for a walk (feeling fit), cycle (feeling very fit) or drive, on a good day along the Killynure Road towards Saintfield, and take a selection of selfie photographs!!! The world and her husband would soon be flocking here to see us! Here is a glimpse of what the focused traveller might chance to see: A friendly Friesian cow, one of a large herd of around 150. As you munch your morning cornflakes, just remember that the milk might have come from her. And in order to produce milk, she must have a calf virtually every year. Zoom out a little and you get the fuller picture, with her sisters and the farm buildings in the background. And a bit further along, another beautiful panorama presents itself. I feel this second view has a real wow factor, as our iconic Mourne Mountains are clearly silhouetted on the horizon. Moving into close-up again, you will see signs of recent excavation on one of the banks. This is obviously an entrance to a nearby badger sett (they’re the JCBs of the animal world!). As they are shy nocturnal creatures, I have never seen a live one, but am glad to know that they are thriving somewhere near me. And if it’s insects you’re looking for, then we can offer the beautiful common blue butterfly. The one I saw moved too quickly for me to get a photo, but I can assure you there was nothing remotely common about its ethereal beauty!
I hope you have a lovely summer, and even if you’re not travelling far afield, just remember that there’s plenty to enjoy and admire - for free right here on our home turf!!

Movie Focus
By Peter Stevenson
AT THE CINEMA: San Andreas 12A (114 mins) Well, what to say about a movie whose star jumped from the lofty heights of the WWE…and landed in a somewhat dilapidated part of Hollywood. Dwayne ‘the Rock’ Johnson has been in some really bad movies: Hercules, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Fast & Furious…, but can San Andreas break this cycle of brash, big-budget nonsense?
1 Sheets + Overs LOC91590 Carryduff Magazine Sig Back
The short answer is ‘no’; surrounded by huge explosions, high-tech CGI and supposedly nail-biting tension, the film-making crew seem to have forgotten the important things to focus on whilst making a movie: primarily story and dialogue. Here, the little story there is is overshadowed by the action which admittedly is done very well. However, without character development and story structure behind it, it quickly becomes yawn-inducing. Acting (I use the term loosely) in this film is tepid at best; our main star Johnson is no better than the lesser known stars, Carla Gugino, for example, but this is no recommendation, no actor is terribly believable, leaving the action lacking depth, with no emotional background. The dialogue quickly becomes grating, predictable and repetitive, overuse of the phrase ‘Oh, my God!’ is enough to cause irked boredom. Enough with the drawbacks; the action (the film’s best feature) is hard-core, the explosions are frequent and San Andreas falls to its knees. If this sounds like your kind of film, see it immediately, perhaps even more than once but if you crave something a little more cerebral, at least a decent story, avoid this like the plague! 2 / 5
On DVD: Mortdecai 12A (106 mins) Imagine the indefatigable Captain Jack Sparrow somehow got amnesia and was forced into a new life as an art dealer, a cad, and all-round layabout. Now mix this hypothetical character with the grandiose and unparalleled moustache and the irrepressible, egregious arrogance of Monsieur Hercule Poirot. Now you begin to get a sense of the character of Mortdecai (Johnny Depp). Bankrupt nobleman Charles Mortdecai must get his hands on millions of pounds in order to save his family’s mansion. Thanks to a fortuitous and altogether serendipitous encounter with an MI5 inspector named Martland (Ewan McGregor), Mortdecai is given the opportunity to track down a stolen Goya painting. His reward? Nazi gold worth the millions he needs. How could he refuse? Keeping in mind that this is a comedy, we are not going to expect anything too extreme; no arson, no theft, no explosions – no, wait, they’re all here. Perhaps I’ve got the wrong end of the stick, then again, for it to be a comedy; all it needs is a joke, but not just one joke, a barrage of impeccably timed witticisms and even the occasional fart gag. So, potentially, it is within the writer’s (Eric Aronson) grasp to create a genuinely worthwhile, snazzy script. Instead, hilarious pratfalls and devilishly delightful quips are replaced with verbose monologues and in-jokes which seem to entertain the cast more than the audience. Mortdecai, his wife Joanna (Gwyneth Paltrow) and Martland are the main characters with support from Paul Bettany and Jeff Goldblum but each is a two-dimensional cardboard cut-out of a character; none is ever fully developed, choosing instead to hide behind some pretty flat and unfunny repartee. 2 / 5 36

MILLENNIUM INTEGRATED PRIMARY SCHOOL The children at Millennium IPS have represented the school very successfully in various sports. The boys and girls competed in the Castlereagh and Lisburn Area European Handball competition. The boys won their section outright against competition from local schools such as St Ita’s PS, St Joseph’s PS Carryduff, Cairnshill PS and Belvoir PS. The girls were joint 1st in their section. Both teams then qualified for the South Eastern finals where they played schools such as Belvoir and Killinchy PSs. We are delighted to say that both the boys’ team and the girls’ team were winners overall. In April the Down Gaelic footballers played Roscommon in the Football League Division 2 Final at Croke Park. As part of the half time entertainment, boys from primary schools around Co. Down played a demonstration match against boys from Roscommon. Millennium IPS was delighted to be represented by twins James and Niall White (pictured left at Croke Park). James got to lead the team out as he started the first half in nets. He then switched places and Niall spent time in nets. James managed to score a point for the Down team and they were able to comfortably beat the Roscommon team – unfortunately the same could not be said for the senior footballers. As always, the last term at school is full of activities and outings. Our P1 children had trips to the Teddy Bear clinic followed by a Teddy Bear’s Picnic, P2 had a visit to the zoo – and the sun even shone for them this year! P3 had a lovely day out in their Victorian costumes to the Ulster Folk and Transport museum while P4 went to visit the Mummy at the Ulster Museum. P5 and P6 are looking forward to their trip to Life Adventure Centre in Castlewellan and We Are Vertigo. P7 had a fantastic residential trip to England where the spent time at Alton Towers and the Think Tank in Birmingham. In order to encourage the children to think about diet and exercise, Millennium IPS runs a ‘Healthy Lifestyles’ week each year. During this week they get to sample and take part in different sports and activities and to taste a variety of healthy snacks. The week began with a talk from County Down Gaelic Football player, Mark Poland. The boys and girls then got to take part in football and hurly sessions. On Tuesday the children from P1 – 3 had their sports day while the older children enjoyed a session of tag rugby. Wednesday things slowed down a little and we had meditation sessions and yoga. Thursday was the turn of the older children to have their sports day (thanks to Carryduff GAC for the use of their facilities) while the younger ones had a taste of Tag Rugby. To finish off the week there was hip-hop dance in the sunshine. The weather was on our side this year and all the activities were enjoyed immensely. Many thanks to Mr Brendan Donnelly our P3 teacher for putting it all together.
