PSNI - Crime Prevention Advice Local police would like to remind those planning on visiting the North Down area over the summer months that it is illegal to drink alcohol on the beaches, at the country park, on trains or in other public areas. Constable Chris Rose, the neighbourhood officer who looks after the Crawfordsburn and Helen's Bay area, explained: "We want people to enjoy everything this area has to offer and we always welcome visitors. We want people to have a good day out with friends and family but we also want them to do so responsibly and with consideration for others. I would urge people to abide by the law. "I would also like to appeal to people to consider car parking issues, particularly at Crawfordsburn Country Park: If there aren't sufficient spaces, don't cause an obstruction. This could be potentially dangerous if emergency services require access. "Police want to ensure that North Down is a safe place to live and visit for everybody and officers will not hesitate to enforce legislation and by-laws, and where possible will confiscate or seize alcohol and report people to local Councils, the Public Prosecution Service or Youth Diversion Officers. "We will also be increasing patrols in particular areas at peak times, including the use of the PSNI quad to carry out patrols." Police would like to remind people that it is illegal to consume alcohol in any designated street or public place and also for under 18's to drink alcohol in a public place Police will not hesitate to enforce the legislation and where possible confiscate or seize alcohol. In addition, any adults found purchasing or supplying alcohol for use by juveniles may be liable for prosecution. Constable Chris Rose with Nikki Ardill (Crawfordsburn Country Park Warden)

St Joseph’s Primary School PUPILS and STAFF at St Joseph’s Primary School, Carryduff are celebrating after their school was named the overall winner of the 2014 Best Kept Schools Awards. The award acknowledges the school’s outstanding commitment to enhancing its environment, and this marks the second year in a row that it has taken the top prize. Almost 200 schools entered the competition, which is run by the Northern Ireland Amenity Council, and winners were chosen in three categories; Pre-Primary, Primary and Post-Primary. The ‘Best of the Best’ is chosen from five finalists, these are the schools that have achieved the highest score from the judges across the five school board areas in Northern Ireland. The ‘Best of the Best’ title is the highest accolade in the Best Kept School Awards competition. Chair of the Amenity Council, Doreen Muskett MBE said: “Our judges travelled the length and breadth of the country, across all five school board areas searching for the most environmentally active schools. “With so many entrants to the competition, both staff and pupils at St Joseph’s Primary School should be very proud. It’s a tremendous achievement to be named ‘Best of the Best’ once, never mind two years running. The award really is testament to their passion for environmental projects. They maintain an immaculate, clean school, with a wonderful eco garden and vegetable plot. St Joseph’s just exemplifies what the Best Kept Awards are all about,” she added. St Joseph’s Primary School has been awarded a monetary prize that will help them with their future environmental projects, as well as attractive signage and a crystal trophy. Mrs Downard, teacher and the Co-ordinator of Education for Sustainable Development at St Joseph’s commented: “we are absolutely delighted to have been awarded ‘Best of the Best’ again. It is an incredible achievement and is a fitting reward for all of the hard work undertaken by the whole school community throughout the last year. With all this excitement, it will difficult to get the Eco Committee to carry out their weeding and litter picking tomorrow but I suppose they deserve a day off after all!! ” Congratulations to both the boys’ and girls’ Handball Team who represented St. Joseph’s at the South East Primary School ‘Games’ Olympic Handball final. They worked hard for many weeks to prepare for this final and definitely gave their best on the day. Both teams where outstanding with the boys winning their competition and the girls finishing second in their competition. They were delighted to be given the opportunity to compete in the event.

We have celebrated living and eating healthily at Millennium with a week of good food and activities. The week began with a whole school assembly that was taken by Seamus Heath from the IFA and Andy Waterworth from Linfield FC and Sport NI. Seamus and Andy spoke to the children about the importance of keeping the body and mind healthy through exercise and a sensible diet. Andy then spent time with each class teaching Football skills. Our dedicated Parents Council provided a healthy break for the children of fresh fruit kebabs, bread sticks and water. The next day we had Jamie from Galaxy Coaching came in to take all the children for Tag Rugby sessions as well as John from Sport NI to teach Athletics. While all this physical activity was taking place the children were also enjoying hand massage and relaxation sessions with Ms Bishop. On Wednesday Kyla and Danny from Down GAA were in to teach the children about Gaelic Football and Hurling. Each class had a 30 minutes taster session with the coaches and they really enjoyed getting out in the WeeCook sunshine to play. We also had Sarah Dobson from ‘WeeCook’ to teach the children how to make healthy and interesting dishes. The younger children played ‘fruit and veg’ bingo and made shape sandwiches. The older children got to cut up their fruit for fruit kebabs as well as make their own mixed vegetable couscous. Thursday brought the sunshine again and Hip Hop dancing with Ruth from Galaxy Coaching. On Friday Hip Hop Dancing morning the children from P1-P4 enjoyed taking part in their Sports Day. There were running races, potato & spoon races, sack race and an obstacle course. It was a great morning and the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Healthy break of cheese and crackers and carrot sticks was yet again provided by our Parents Council. Running throughout the week has been a ‘World Cup’ football tournament with lots of ‘countries’ competing against each other. We look forward to seeing who goes through to the P1 sports day final of our competition! Pauline Thanks to Mr Donnelly for all his hard work organising such Burgess a successful week. Pauline Burgess, one of our P3 parents came into school recently to read from her new novel, Pony Palace Camp, the first in her series ‘Pony Friends Forever’. The books are set in Lessan’s Riding Stables near Saintfield and are told from the viewpoint of the actual ponies at Lessans. The children enjoyed listening to the first chapter being read and had lots of questions to ask. Huge congratulations to the girls Netball team and their coach, Mr Gardner. The team were competing in the Northern Ireland Netball Primary School Finals in Bangor. They played six matches on their way to the final where they were beaten by Broadbridge PS, Limavady. What a massive accomplishment for the team to be ranked 2nd in Northern Ireland in Netball. Millennium IPS has only been playing netball for 4 years and with only 10 girls in our P7 class this was a fantastic accomplishment. Well done girls! Well done Mr Gardner for the time, effort and dedication he shows the team.
