Welcome
to your July August issue
Contents
Hello again everyone,
Articles & Features:
Summer is finally here! Yay! This is a double issue to cover both July and August while I have a little break, in theory. I’ll be catching up on my Accounts, clearing the accumulated paper in my office, sorting out the mess in the garage and definitely having a de-clutter generally round the house. I know that doesn’t sound much like a break, but there wont be any deadlines, which is as good as a holiday to me! I’m looking forward most to taking the pup a bit further afield. She hasn't been to the beach yet, but she absolutely loves water, so now she’s 7 months old, the time is right for a longer walk down the boardwalk to Murlough Beach. I hope you all have a lovely Summer break too, and make the most of any good weather. Remember if you use businesses or services from the Focus, please tell them where you saw their ad. Enjoy whatever you get up to. Until next time!

Whether it’s a long walk or an epic adventure, technology can make travelling much easier. It’s amazing how much can be crammed into a small space: for example the Clippa Lady Mini Multi-Tool Hair Clip (£8) combines a bottle opener, scraper, ruler, small screwdriver and a nail file in a simple pink hair clip. If you fancy something that’s more practical than pretty, the evergreen Leatherman multi-tool and its many imitators crams an astonishing number of tools into something barely larger than a pair of pliers, and while you can’t generally fly with them in your carry-on luggage – many multi-tools have various cutting bits that make them potential weapons – they’re very useful things to pack, or to have on a hike or in a caravan. It pays to shop around, though: the top Leatherman models can be ruinously expensive but they’re often heavily discounted, so for example the £149.95 Wave is currently available from several retailers for nearer £100. Much cheaper options are available too. Wearable technology is becoming a big deal in the great outdoors too. Apple’s Series 3 Apple Watch has built-in GPS and is available with its own 4G data connection, (only on EE), which enables you to track your route and get directions without having to take your phone out or even bring it with you. And there are now tons of focused GPS watches for sports and for hiking, such as TomTom’s Adventurer GPS watch (£199) or if you’re feeling really flush, Garmin’s Fenix 5 Multisports (£439). Where Apple’s device is a smartwatch that can do GPS, rival devices were designed with GPS as their main priority and are often better bets for serious sports
6
people. TomTom and Garmin are the big names in this market but there are plenty of cheaper options from less established firms too. If you’ll be travelling for a while and think your phone battery won’t last, there are several options for topping up its charge. Some phones enable you to swap the batteries (although the most expensive phones, such as iPhones and the latest Android flagships, don’t), but most big name devices can accept power pack cases that combine a protective case and extra battery in one item. That means much more life between 3 charges, but it does add quite a lot of bulk and weight. Expect to pay around £60 for an established brand such as Mophie’s Juice Pack for the iPhone, and steer clear of no-name products on eBay – dodgy batteries can go on fire with horrific consequences, so it’s wise to stick to recognised brands from reputable sellers. Another option is a portable charger. Solar ones aren’t much cop in the UK except on the sunniest days, but pre-charged devices such as Aukey’s excellent Power Bank can be used to charge tablets, phones, handheld games consoles and other small items such as Kindles. Again, they’re often discounted and £20 is the sweet spot for a decent one. You can expect to get more than four full charges for a smartphone or one and a half for a big tablet.

This light summery supper is on the table in less than 30 minutes – perfect when you don’t want to spend hours in the kitchen. If you prefer, replace the salmon with pieces of cod loin or smoked haddock fillets.
• 4 x 175g pieces salmon fillet • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 1 tbsp lemon juice • 2 tbsp olive oil • 250g cherry tomatoes • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and thinly sliced • 250g tagliatelle (see Tip) • 150g asparagus tips • 1 tbsp freshly chopped flatleaf parsley • Lemon wedges to serve
Preheat the oven to 200°C, fan 180°C, gas mark 6. Place the salmon on a lightly oiled shallow roasting tin. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and drizzle over the lemon juice. Place the cherry tomatoes in a bowl and add half of the oil and the garlic. Toss gently to coat. Place in the roasting tin around the salmon. Roast for 12-15 minutes until the salmon is just cooked through and the tomatoes have softened. Meanwhile cook the tagliatelle in a pan of lightly salted boiling water for 8-10 minutes or according to the packet instructions. Add the asparagus tips to the pan for the final 3 minutes. Drain well. Return to the pan. Add the roast cherry tomatoes and the remaining olive oil to the tagliatelle and asparagus and toss together. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Divide the pasta between four warmed plates. Top with the roasted salmon, sprinkle with the chopped parsley and serve with the lemon wedges. You can use any long thin pasta for this dish; spaghetti or linguine would work just as well. If you use fresh pasta the cooking time will be reduced – just follow the instructions on the pack.

Swimming is a fun activity for your dog, and one which can be extremely beneficial for their overall health. In the heat of summer, however, it comes into its own by cooling them down and helping them to avoid the risk of heat stroke to which dogs are prone. So what should you do to make sure they’re safe in the water, and that swimming is fun rather than frightening?
14
• Stay in the shallows at first Letting your dog play in shallow waters helps them to acclimatise and gain confidence if they’re relatively new to swimming. • Be aware of undercurrents It’s easy for your dog to be swept out further than you’d like if there are tidal undercurrents on your stretch of beach. Fastflowing rivers and streams also pose a danger in this respect, even if your dog’s a strong swimmer. • Provide fresh water to drink Drinking lake or river water can result in an upset stomach due to the bacteria and parasites that are often present, so it’s a good
idea to take some fresh drinking water with you. • Don’t let them get too tired Swimming is tiring for your dog, so watch out for signs that they’re flagging. They may start to panic and flounder in the water, especially if they’re novice swimmers. It’s possible to buy life jackets for dogs, which give them confidence in the water if they’re a little unsure. www.passpawt.com/safety-tips-for-swimming-with-yourdog/ www.petfinder.com/dogs/living-with-your-dog/summertime-fun-on-the-water-keep-your-dogs-safe/ www.vetstreet.com/dr-marty-becker/keep-your-dog-safe -in-the-water-this-summer By Ann Haldon

If not starting from scratch, there are plenty of quick, inexpensive fixes, including simply rearranging the furniture, adding a canopy or sunshade or setting out a few large plant pots. Fit a simple metal archway over a path as a focal point, or install a small wooden pergola. Refresh walls or fencing with a coat of paint – matt black and very dark blue are very on-trend. Add comfortable seating, such as deck chairs, loungers, low-level chairs or sofas covered with waterproof fabrics. Spend time considering whether a few quick, inexpensive changes or an entire redesign will make your garden practical and beautiful. First, sketch a scale plan of the space on graph paper and decide what will go where. If revamping the landscaping ensure that the materials you use – for paving, fencing, pots, furnishings and so on – all co-ordinate. Set the dining area nearest the house, with space for a barbecue or a wood-fired pizza oven nearby, or even a complete outdoor kitchen. In a large garden you could fit a play area at the far end, and a peaceful area away from both the house and the children is ideal for a hammock or swing seat. Signal changes of function by altering flooring materials and changes of levels. Think about lighting early – an outdoor lighting circuit (installed by a qualified electrician) allows for flexible, effective garden lighting. Consider what features would benefit from illumination and add general lighting for evenings. Wall lights are ideal for paths and passageways, while strings of lights can be wound around trees, posts and trellises.

SMALL SPACES: COOL SPACES
Tiny gardens, courtyards, decks and balconies can be wonderful places to relax. • All you really need is a couple of chairs and a small table, or built-in furniture can maximise corners and awkward spaces. • Furniture that doubles as storage can hold gardening or picnic equipment. • Optimise vertical space with tiered and hanging planters, even a living wall. • Paint walls white and choose reflective pots for plants. • Use battery-powered string lights or solar torches in dark corners. • Reflect light with a mirror on a sheltered wall. • Stick to a limited palette for pots, hard landscaping, furnishings and accessories.

Finding Gobi – Dion Leonard This is the story of ultramarathon runner Dion Leonard and the small stray dog that joined him on his 155 -mile race through the Gobi Desert. Dion becomes determined to offer the dog a home, but there’s an awful lot of red tape to get through, and then the dog disappears. This Sunday Times bestseller has also been rewritten as a picture book and as a young readers’ book, so do make sure you order the right version! The Possible World – Liese O’Halloran Schwarz After his mother is killed, six year old Ben tells people that his real name is Leo, and that he has another mother. But no one believes him. Doctor Lucy is struggling to come to terms with her marriage breakup when she first meets the little boy. Clare is approaching her 100th birthday and decides to tell someone the story of her life before it’s too late. Three separate characters, whose stories (past, present or future) are interlinked. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

Modern Women: 52 Pioneers – Kira Cochrane Modern Women is a celebration of some of the women who have shaped society and changed lives. Women such as Tegla Loroupe, who grew up with 24 siblings and halfsiblings in Kenya, went on to win numerous marathons, and now runs a sports training programme for refugees. Activists, athletes, filmmakers and even a circus strongwoman make up the 52. You’ll read about well-known women as well as women who have been all but forgotten. In each case Cochrane has managed to unearth something new and inspiring. A fascinating read you’ll want to dip into time and time again. All Things Bright and Strange – James Markert In the wake of WWI, Ellsworth Newberry is grieving for his wife and just wants to be left alone. But when a strange chapel is unearthed in the woods, Ellsworth may be the only one who can lead his community in a fight against an unknown, unseen enemy. Part Christian fiction, part horror, part historical fiction, All Things Bright
and Strange starts strongly, but gets lost a little bit along the way. Now You See Her – Heidi Perks Charlotte only took her eyes off the little girl for a few minutes but when she doesn’t turn up, Charlotte is ostracised by the community and blamed by the media. And, of course, the little girl’s mother is never going to forgive her. But then the two women come under police investigation and something isn’t quite as it seems. A tension-filled thriller, with plenty of twists and turns. The Trick to Time – Kit De Waal Mona leads a quiet life in a seaside town – making her dolls, visiting the carpenter and helping grieving mothers. But how did she get here? What happened to the spirited young woman who set out seeking adventure, and the man she fell in love with? A beautiful read with engaging characters that covers issues as diverse as grief, immigration, mental illness and love.

relationship between your emotions, activities and body state, helping you learn what makes you feel better. Cute Chill Panda suggests activities suitable for your emotional and physical state. There’s an app for everything these days, so of course there are plenty for improving your fitness, health and wellbeing. Here are nine popular apps to help you discover a healthier, happier you. HEALTH AND WELLBEING PAID : Deep Sleep with Andrew Johnson This app provides relaxing guided meditations intended to clear your mind and help you get deep, restful sleep. FREE : Headspace - Meditation and Mindfulness The Headspace app teaches you how to meditate and live mindfully, with exercises on everything from managing anxiety and stress to breathing, sleep, happiness, calm and focus. It teaches classic meditation techniques in just a few minutes a day, and can send custom push notifications with mindfulness reminders. You can also track your progress and share it with others.
FITNESS APPS PAID : Daily Workouts This app’s 39 area-targeted 5-10minute workouts include stretch, Pilates and kettlebell exercises, which can be combined to create longer, whole-body workouts. There’s a timer and on-screen instructions, but you’ll need the internet to watch video demonstrations. There’s also a popular free version with just 10 workouts. FREE : Couch to 5K Designed to get you off the couch and running 5 kilometres in 9 weeks, this NHS app builds you up gradually with a mix of running and walking. Celebrity trainers tell you when to run and when to walk, while a countdown timer shows how long you’ve got left on each run. DIET AND NUTRITION
PAID : Carbs and Cals This app contains over 3,500 photos of UK food and drink items along with their nutritional values. Chill Panda It includes a meal calculator, This family-friendly NHS app can measure your heart rate and helps calendar, recipe builder, exercise you develop an awareness of the tracker, custom meal input facility

and a special diabetes section to record blood glucose levels and carbohydrate intake. FREE : Foodvisor The Foodvisor app claims to recognise your food from a photo of your plate, estimating serving sizes and providing a detailed nutrition report that’s added to your food diary. It can also track physical activities and calories burned, highlighting weak areas that need attention. My Fitness Pal This hugely popular app is a calorie counter, diet tracker and exercise tracker all in one. It can scan the barcodes of over 4 million foods and give you detailed nutrition information about them. It also suggests exercises, links to other exercise apps, logs your exercise and tracks your steps. With goal-setting, a recipe importer, a restaurant meal logger and the ability to add photos and share progress, this app really has everything. Using an app to improve your health and fitness may seem counter-intuitive, with the media issuing dire warnings about the effects of too much screen time. But used correctly, technology can motivate and educate us to eat more healthily and exercise, encouraging us to socialise through sharing our efforts with others. So why not give one of these apps a try?

Don’t know your UVA from your UVB? Worried about a mole? Want to be prepared in case you get sunburnt? This guide is for you… First up – the difference between UVA and UVB. Both are types of ultraviolet radiation that can increase your risk of getting skin cancer. UVA rays prematurely age skin, leading to more wrinkles and pigmentation. UVB rays are the ones that actually burn. ‘SPF’ is short for sun protection factor. The higher the number, the better the protection. The British Association of Dermatologists recommends choosing a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or over. However, the SPF only relates to UVB rays, not UVA rays. So you’ll need to look for a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects against both types of ultraviolet radiation. You then need to apply it at least 15 minutes before going outside, and reapply it at least every two hours. Weleda’s Edelweiss Sunscreen Facial Lotion protects against both UVA and UVB, has an SPF of 30 and is packed with skin-friendly ingredients, such as organic coconut and jojoba oils. It’s suitable for all skin types and smells rather lovely, with subtle notes of citrus and lavender. Priced at £13.95, the lotion can be bought online from www.weleda.co.uk. If you do forget to slap on the sunscreen, aloe vera can help to soothe sunburnt skin. Not all aloe vera gels are created equally, however. Some
32
contain very little actual aloe vera, so do check the ingredients list. Dr. Organic Aloe Vera Gel is a good choice. It has an instant cooling effect, is hypoallergenic and helps to restore hydration. The gel costs £5.59 from Holland & Barrett. Do you suffer from prickly heat, or find you only have to look at the sun to go red? Trilogy’s Very Gentle Calming Serum is worth a try. It’s specially formulated to reduce inflammation and irritation. As the name suggests, it’s fragrance-free and gentle enough for even sensitive skin. Ingredients include aloe vera, green tea, chamomile, sweet almond oil and evening primrose oil. The serum costs £29.50 from Boots or www.trilogyproducts.co.uk. If you’re worried about a mole or other changes to your skin, it’s always best to book in to see your GP. In the meantime, The British Association of Dermatologists’ ABCD-Easy guide details the main things to look for: • Asymmetry: the two halves of the area may differ in shape. • Border: the edges of the area may be irregular or blurred, and sometimes show notches. • Colour: this may be uneven. Different shades of black, brown and pink may be seen. • Diameter: most melanomas are at least 6mm in diameter. Report any change in size, shape or diameter to your doctor. • Expert: if in doubt, check it out! If your GP is concerned about your skin, make sure you see a Consultant Dermatologist. Your GP can refer you via the NHS. For more information about protecting your skin, check out www.bad.org.uk.

Nature Focus In another of a new series of articles about our local environment, Helen Long writes about her observations of nature outside Carryduff. This month Helen visits Seaforde.... So the plan was to drive to Tyrella, walk the dogs on the beach, and then tuck into a picnic in the great outdoors. Alas, a thick, cold mist from the Irish Sea hi-jacked us and scuppered that! We did take a short walk, but the only evidence of the sea was the distant roar; so we headed back north again and embarked on plan B. When we got to Seaforde, as the sun was visible again, I parked and took a little impromptu tour of the village. I had to laugh as, although most of Seaforde stretches along the busy A24, a lesser side-street was labelled ‘Main Street’!! The CoI Parish Church dates to 1720 and is located in a very picturesque setting, at the top of a tree-lined avenue. I visited in May, when the trees were just beginning to unfurl their leaves, and I would have taken the dogs for a walk in the grounds, but there was a big sign—NO DOGS—so that was another plan scuppered! Seaforde would originally have been part of the Forde estate, which dates back to Elizabethan times, and the Plantation of Ulster. Although the mansion is private, its Tropical Butterfly House, garden and maze, are all open to the public. At the heart of the village I was very impressed with the floral display in front of a terrace of Georgian houses. It may well have been the work of the residents in the end house, which was festooned with flowers from top to bottom tulips of all types and colours (even on the upper storey windowsills), daffodils, honesty, bluebells, and lots of other riotous spring flowers! Someone in there has very green fingers and a sense of humour to match: note the ornamental heron on the pump (right), with a fish dangling from its beak! Another positive touch was the gold-painted letter-box (left), in celebration of Seaforde girl Bethany Firth, who won gold in the 2012 Paralympic Games in the Women’s 100 metre backstroke. The inscription is also written in Braille a wonderful touch in every sense! Deciding to eat my picnic at home, on the journey back I was able to reflect on my late friend Mary Christie, who grew up in this little village and lived to nearly 100; and whose mother had faithfully played the organ in the parish church for many, many years. So in the end. Seaforde dazzled me with its brilliance, following the fog of Tyrella. Sometimes you have to look for the magic amid the murk!!
Helen Long

Holiday Bible Club at Carryduff Gospel Hall KIDS GO FREE - THE HOTTEST DEAL THIS SUMMER!
Free. Gratis. Gratuit. No matter where you might go this summer, ‘free’ sounds good no matter how it’s said! It’s even better when there’s no hidden catches…like our Holiday Bible Clubs at Carryduff Gospel Hall. They’re absolutely free. Nothing to pay. Zilch. Cero. Náid. Our Holiday Bible Clubs are run in conjunction with a friendly and energetic crack commando unit from Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF). The theme for our 2018 club is ‘Jesus, My Saviour and Friend’, and each day there’ll be crafts, dancing, games, memory verse challenges, quizzes, singing, snacks and prizes. In the lessons we’ll be learning about some of the best known stories in the Bible, such as ‘Jesus Calms the Storm’ and ‘The Good Samaritan’. There’ll also be time to make new friends! Carryduff local Sarah brought her children along to our first Holiday Bible Club back in 2016 and says: ‘My kids have really enjoyed your summer club for the past couple of years. They love the singing and actions, and have learnt a lot from the Bible lessons. I can really see a difference in them. The volunteers are well trained and friendly. I’d definitely recommend the club to other parents!’
This year’s club will run from 13-17th August, beginning each morning at 10.30 and finishing at 12.30. Although completely free, places at the club are limited so please register your children now by emailing info@carryduff.org or phoning Monty on 077 5131 0919.

CASTLEREAGH HILLS SCHOOL GOLF DAY One hundred children

from 13 primary schools enjoyed a day out from the classroom to take part in a unique golfing day held at Castlereagh Hills Golf Course in June. Sponsored by Domino’s Pizza, Saintfield Road, the aim of the golf day was to promote exercise, healthy eating and introduce children to the basics of golf. All 100 children participated in a range of health and sports related workshops as well as a massive fitness class on the 18th fairway, an archery challenge and golf lessons from PGA Golf Professional, Mr Steve Richie and Michael McNulty from Confederation of Golf Ireland. The day then culminated in the afternoon with a schools’ golfing competition, where the children put their newly developed skills to the test. The best boy award was won by Ciaran Mallon while the best girl was won by Eloise Morris both from St Ita’s Primary School (pictured right). The eagerly awaited school team award was won by Brooklands Primary School with St Ita’s Primary School finishing in 2nd place.

MILLENNIUM INTEGRATED PRIMARY SCHOOL The summer term started off with our P7 residential trip which this year took 32 children and 3 adults on the long bus journey to Killary Adventure Centre in Galway. The group spent 4 nights in Killary and had 3 activity-filled days, including Gorge walking, kayaking, mud challenge, climbing and water-trampolining in Killary fjord. The kids had a brilliant time and thoroughly enjoyed their time away. The highlight of the trip was throwing Mr Mawhinney into the sea!! Congratulations to our netball team who recently took part in the Northern Ireland Finals at Lisburn Racquets Club. Having already won the Belfast finals, the girls, who were defending their Northern Ireland title from last year, were really looking forward to the challenge. Millennium had played brilliantly throughout the heats and the semifinal but were narrowly beaten in the final. Congratulation to the whole team for the hard work they have put in. Huge congratulation to Mr Gardner for being an excellent coach and well done for organising the whole event this year – as reigning champions, Millennium were the host of the finals and Mr Gardner certainly did us proud with his super organisational skills. We would like to wish all our friends and families at Millennium a wonderful summer break. We will see you all back at school on Thursday 30th August.

LCCC COMMUNITY SPORTS GRANT PROGRAMME On behalf of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Alderman Paul Porter, Chairman of the Leisure & Community Development Committee has launched the Council’s community sports grant programme to the value of nearly £42,000. The programme will help sports clubs, community groups and sporting governing bodies increase participation in sport in their local area. The small grants programme entitled, ‘Be Active, Stay Active Awards’ was developed in conjunction with Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council and Sport Northern Ireland. The aim of the programme is to prioritise the development of grassroots sports projects to address the continued under-representation in sport amongst women and girls, people with disabilities and people living in areas of greatest need. Groups can apply for grants from £1,000 - £2,500 and eligible groups include Governing Bodies of Sport (recognised by Sport NI), Sports Clubs (affiliated to a Governing Body of Sport recognised by Sport NI), Charities (with a registered charity number), Parent Teacher Associations and Community/Voluntary Groups. Alderman Paul Porter said, “The Council is delighted to be working in partnership with Sport NI to provide funding to groups who play a vital role in addressing health inequalities and improving health and wellbeing opportunities in their local area. This year, we have increased the minimum grant threshold to £1,000 to further support eligible groups. It is hoped that this funding will inspire groups to make a real difference in their local area and have a positive impact on the lives of the community.” Alderman Paul Porter added, “The current round of funding opens on Friday 29th June at 12 noon and closes on Friday 20th July at 12 noon and I would encourage as many eligible groups as possible to apply. The Council is also holding two information roadshows to showcase the funding opportunities available on Wednesday 27th June at 7pm at Lagan Valley LeisurePlex in Lisburn and Thursday 28th June at 7pm at Lough Moss Leisure Centre in Carryduff.” For further details, please visit www.lisburncastlereagh.gov.uk/things-to-do/sports-development/beactive-stay-active-awards.
