Welcome to the June issue of the Carryduff Focus Hello again Everyone. Well, as you can see from the front cover, Roundabout News has re-opened! It’s great to see it in full swing once again, and looking gorgeous too after a total refurbishment. I wish David and Lois Jackson from Jackson Greens fruit & veg shop the very best of luck in their new venture. I hope you will join me in supporting them and indeed, in supporting all our local shops and other local businesses (I know I bang on about this all the time, but I really think it’s important to shop local to keep our local community thriving). We have some other local business changes too - Xtravision has sadly closed recently, but a new Physiotherapist and Pilates Studio has opened (see Core Health’s ad opposite) where the Educogym used to be. It’s really brave of any business to start up or expand during a recession. Lets hope more businesses follow suit and take over the various empty premises soon. Good luck to all the students taking exams this month. I’m just waiting for the lovely ‘exam weather’ I remember from my own school days. Wishful thinking perhaps, as current temperatures seems to be about a month behind what we’d expect. As usual this year, there wont be a separate August magazine. The July issue will cover both months, allowing me to take a bit of time off in July. I’m looking forward to that! So any community page contributions for August should be sent to me in time for the July issue. Until next time...
Deirdre
July/Aug Issue Deadline: Mon 17th June Community Page Deadline: Wed 19th June 4

Focus on Movies
By Peter Stevenson
AT THE CINEMA: 21 and Over 15, (93 mins) When we think of great milestones in our lives, turning 21 is one no-one forgets, indeed we yearn to go back to this juncture over and over again in an attempt to recapture lost youth and exuberance. If you find yourself wanting a visual insight into what it is like to be 21 in 2013, avoid this movie. If you want a rip-roarious comedy, avoid this movie. In general, AVOID THIS MOVIE! The plot is beyond basic: friends Casey (Skylar Astin) and Miller (Miles Teller) convince medical student Chang (Justin Chon) to go out and get drunk the night before his big medical school interview. Can you guess what happens next? Surprise, surprise, the drunken shenanigans spiral quickly out of control and, while Chang’s future hangs in the balance, the members of the cinema audience suddenly remember they’ve left the iron on. They won’t miss much however; any amusing parts are short lived and highly derivative. Racial stereotypes flood the script, no doubt in attempt to be hysterically ironic, but each joke leaves an uncomfortable silence both onscreen and in the audience. Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, who both write and direct this movie, had a huge yet surprising hit with The Hangover, and deservedly so, but based on the standard of this drivel, we must assume that that was merely a fluke. If you are thinking of seeing this movie, just dust off and re-watch your old copy of American Pie, you’ll still get more laughs, even if you’ve seen it 20 times. 1 / 5
On DVD: Playing for Keeps 12 (105 mins) Someone should really break it gently to Gerard Butler that ‘romcoms’, by definition, are made up of two elements: romance and comedy. This movie fails in the first and is devoid of the second. ‘Predictable and worn out’ is a good way to describe the clichéd ‘romantic’ component which is supposed to grab our attention. Poor George (Butler), a former professional soccer player has fallen on hard times: his career has petered out, he is divorced (and she is about to get remarried) and his relationship with his son is heading the same way as his career. What to do?! If you’re George, you do two things: 1. Coach your son’s dismally underachieving soccer team; and 2. Predatorily home-in on the most gullible sex-starved ‘soccer-moms’, dropping off their kids, who can provide a quick thrill. All through this tired, formulaic premise, one yearns for something vaguely comic, a contrived visual gag, an immature fart joke, even an affected double-entendre, but alas, none comes. Performance-wise, Butler is firmly stuck in auto-pilot mode. Where is the gritty yet tender actor who shone in Law Abiding Citizen? Catherine Zeta-Jones, Uma Thurman and Jessica Biel (as George’s ex-wife) provide the love interests for George to use and move on from. And why wouldn’t he? They are each onedimensional characters akin to an afterthought on the part of writer Robbie Fox. Why Dennis Quaid’s character (Carl) is even in the movie remains a mystery, perhaps it was to balance out the ratio of male:female roles. Quaid himself functions just below par, seemingly as bored of this movie as the audience is. Director Gabriele Muccino (The Pursuit of Happyness) allows the plot to play out in a fixed neutral; stylistically it is beige and aesthetically it is uninspired. If he keeps making movies like this, Butler and George’s careers will have similar fates. 1 / 5 38

Carryduff Primary School Primary 7 pupils enjoy the sunshine at Edinburgh Castle during their recent residential trip.
St Joseph’s Primary School marked the official opening of its new Eco Garden in April by inviting a range of guests to join it in celebrating its completion. Environment Minister, Alex Attwood cut the ceremonial ribbon and planted a tree to officially open the garden. Speaking after the ceremony, Principal Dominic Donnelly said:“We are delighted with our new Eco Garden and we would like to thank all those who have helped us from the inception of this project to its completion. The Eco Garden is actually situated on a sunny slope and consists of a small orchard in its upper reaches leading all the way down to a woodland walk. Other features include a pond, vegetable plot, herb garden and a mini beast hotel. It will facilitate learning on so many different levels. Primarily, it will provide learning opportunities for the children in topics relating to the ‘World Around Us.’ We look forward to many happy years educating and inspiring generations of children through activity based learning in what is effectively an outdoor classroom.” 40

Millennium Integrated Primary School Dates for your Diary:
8th June 2013 - First Holy Communion 8th June 2013 - N Ireland Netball Finals 28th June 2013 - School finishes at 12noon for the summer holidays As always, the last term before the summer holidays are busy with school trips, class assembly and other fun activities. This term saw the annual P2 trip to the zoo. The children had a fabulous trip and it even managed to stay dry for the whole day! Our P1 class entertained the whole school and their parents with their rendition of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. It was a lovely production and the children all spoke out clearly and sang beautifully. P4 also held a whole school assembly for the end of their topic on ‘Egyptians’. They demonstrated (quite graphically!) how to make an Egyptian Mummy. Our P7 class have recently returned from their visit to Alton Towers and Thinktank Science Museum in Birmingham. Many thanks to all the staff involved in making this such a memorable event.
