Spring already! It’s going to be a busy couple of months, with Mother’s Day on 10th March and Easter Sunday on 31st, not to mention more school holidays! If you’re short on ideas for your Mum’s Mother’s Day present, we have lots of local businesses offering everything you could pamper her with, from lovely meals to beauty treatments to nights out. To treat your Mum to a day away from the kitchen, there’s a special 3 course meal on offer at the Beechill Inn on page 29. If your Mum would prefer to relax and be pampered, there’s a great Mother’s Day treat available at Tranquility (see the inside front cover). Want to treat her to a new hair style? - there’s 10% off hair and beauty treatments at Riah on page 27, and gift vouchers available from Lynsey Quinn on page 7, Head Office on page 17 and Louise Gallagher on page 37. Maybe your Mum would enjoy a night out at a local fashion show in aid of Action Cancer (page 41) or a performance at the Belvoir Players Theatre (all details on page 25). There must be something there to suit everyone’s Mum! And all local too....

“I believe a successful personal financial review should save you money and a successful estate planning review should save your children money”. Peter Gallagher is a local Independent Financial Advisor.

Having recently achieved Diploma status in 2012, Peter practises from his office in Belfast and has over 20 years experience in the industry. His additional experience as a Consultant for a Will Writing company in the past 8 years has led to his belief that the two areas are inseparable and that financial advice & estate planning advice should go hand in hand. “My starting point was in understanding the relationship between personal finances & estate planning. I believe that without one the other is only half done.” Areas that should prompt a review:  life assurance policies written in joint names  policies not in trust  policies not reviewed for cost/cover/changing circumstances  premiums ‘loaded’ by advisors; increasing monthly costs by 20% or more  no wills in place, or simply leaving ‘everything to spouse’ I have even seen examples of homes signed over to children, this is a potential minefield and normally of no use in terms of protecting the home or avoiding Inheritance Tax. These common mistakes can lead to planning that is simply not cost effective and worse still could end up with a large percentage of your estate in the hands of the Revenue. The scenario is compounded where estate planning advice has not been sought; resulting in homes & savings being at risk from Long Term Care, estates ravaged by inheritance tax, money & land left to your children lost in subsequent divorces or bankruptcy.

And yet a simple solution is available. A combination of revised finances along with personalised Wills & Trusts could solve all of these problems. Simply call to arrange a review of your circumstances, including current wills/plans, at no expense and with no obligation. Designed by you in the comfort of your own home and tailored to give you control over what happens now and in the future, this review will help you understand your circumstances and allow you to make an informed choice. Together with full support from a respected estate planning company we can mob 07779 259 144  Design your Wills, Trusts, Enduring Power of Attorney tel 02890 467 467  Advise on Long Term Care, protecting your home & savings, Lifetime Gifting  Untangle inefficient & costly life assurance policies fax 02890 467 468  Advise on business succession planning email: pgallagher@premierfp.com  Assist in Inheritance Tax mitigation web: www.pfpni.com  Protect your wealth for your children should they ever divorce

SHOULD YOU SAVE OR SHOULD YOU INVEST? With the end of the tax year coming up many people will want to make use of their ISA allowance before it is too late. Your options are a cash ISA (up to £5,640), a stocks & shares ISA (up to £11,280), or a combination of both – so which should you choose? Opting for a cash ISA lets you keep some rainy day money handy, and you will get your capital back plus a small amount of interest. However interest rates for cash ISAs have fallen to new record lows. Recent research from the Bank of England shows that the average rate for a cash ISA including any guaranteed bonus stood at 1.85%, while the average rate for a cash ISA without any bonus was 0.88%. Inflation is currently 2.7% and has been above 2% for more than 3 years, so at these interest rates cash ISAs are actually guaranteed to lose money in real terms. Against this you could have invested in a moderate risk fund in a stocks & shares ISA, which on average returned 10.1% over the past year (IMA Mixed Investment 40%-85% shares sector). Obviously the returns are not guaranteed and we all know values go down as well as up, but the average return is still 24.3% over the past 5 years – a period which included the banking crisis in late 2008/early 2009. So when should you consider investing rather than keeping your money in cash?  If you already have some savings in place to cover emergencies, and have cleared any short-term debt (e.g. credit cards).  If you are unlikely to need access to the money for at least 5 years – for example if you want to build up some funds towards retirement, or university fees.  If you can afford to put some money away every month – this can grow into a nice lump sum surprisingly quickly.  If you are prepared to take some level of risk with your money, bearing in mind the alternative risk of losing money in real terms with cash. The value of your investment can go down as well as up and you may not get back as much as you originally invested.

The Legal Process after the Death of a Loved One When a loved one passes away, families can become overwhelmed with the legalities of administering their estate. Some common questions asked by family members are included below. What do the family need to do? An application is made to the Court by the Personal Representatives (PR's) of the deceased. The application will be for a “Grant of Probate” if the deceased left a Will or for “Letters of Administration” if the deceased did not leave a Will. Why does an application have to be made? An application has to be made so that the PR's can gain control of the assets/liabilities of the deceased. The PR's can then pay any debts and distribute any assets to the beneficiaries. Who are the Personal Representatives? If the deceased left a Will s/he will have appointed Executors to manage the administration of their estate. If the deceased did not leave a Will, Administrators are appointed. Administrators are the next of kin of the deceased. If a PR does not want to take on the responsibility of administering the estate they can renounce the role. Who are the beneficiaries? If the deceased left a Will it will state who they want their estate left to. If the deceased did not leave a Will the law outlines the beneficiaries in order of priority. Generally speaking the spouse and children take the estate. What are the responsibilities of PR's? The PR's have a duty to contact HMRC to inform them of the death, value any assets and debts of the deceased at the date of death by contacting all of the institutions involved such as banks, pension funds etc. They also have a duty to value any property owned by the deceased such as a house and personal items. Once the estate has been valued the HMRC are notified and inheritance tax (if any) is dealt with. How long does the process take? The process can take anywhere from a couple of months to more than a year. It depends on how complicated the estate is. It can be painstaking work as each company has individual procedures for dealing with probate. How much does it cost? This depends on whether the PR's employ a solicitor to undertake the work or whether they choose to complete it themselves In addition there are court fees to extract Probate. If you require further advice on dealing with an estate, Campbell Stafford have sensitive staff who are experienced in helping clients through this difficult time. Please contact Michael Stafford or Louise Harvey for more information.

FOR WHAT SHALL IT PROFIT A MAN, IF HE SHALL GAIN THE WHOLE WORLD, AND LOSE HIS OWN SOUL ? (Bible - Mark 8 v 36)

Have you ever stopped to wonder, what this life is all about? Why you’re here and where you’re going when your lease of time runs out? Maybe you’ve been far too busy trying hard to reach your goal; Would you let me kindly ask you, have you thought about you soul? If you’ve never thought it over, spend a little time today; There is nothing more important that will ever come your way, Than the joy of sins forgiven and to know you’ve been made whole; In the name of Christ the Saviour, have you thought about your soul?
