I’m afraid to mention the weather - what with the storms and the relentless rain, and I’m sure we all remember the huge amounts of snow that arrived last March! Lets hope this year March will be a bit kinder. Still, plenty going on this month Pancake Tuesday on 4th March and the beginning of Lent, St Patrick’s Day on 17th March, which means a day off for most people. Then Mother’s Day on Sunday 30th March, which happens to be the day the clocks go forward (at 1am). So all the Mums out there hoping to sleep in a bit longer on Mother’s Day will be disappointed to lose an hour instead! At least the days will be longer from then on (if not any warmer!) We’ve lots of hair and beauty salon offers in this issue for Mother’s Day if you’re stuck for present ideas. Have a look at Factor 1 on page 10, Passion Hair and Beauty on page 13, Chic Beauty and La Mon Hair Studio both on page 23 and of course there’s always a special menu at the Beechill - they’re on page 27.

Focus on Movies
By Peter Stevenson
AT THE CINEMA: The Lego Movie U (100mins) Is there, I wonder, a person in the developed world who has not, at some point in their lives, played with Lego? Such is the place in our hearts occupied by this strange means of construction. The most important thing to remember about Lego is that it is not intrinsically about following instructions; it is about giving shape to imagination. With such a wide scope to work with, how could a Lego based movie possibly fail? Within the last decade, the Lego brand has branched out from its highly successful toys which have been on films, comic books and more, Star Wars/Batman, for example, developing them into fantastically humorous video games. It is this irreverent humour which translates onto the big screen, allowing this movie to get away with a weak storyline and a surprising amount of sentimentality.
1 Sheets + Overs LOC74631 Carryduff Magazine Sig 18 Back
Emmet (Chris Pratt) is a normal, everyday Lego figure living an unremarkable Lego life in construction, until an unexpected occurrence flips Emmet’s mundane existence on its head, forcing him into a new world of imagination and creativity. He is mistakenly (or is it a mistake?) revealed as the prophesied MasterBuilder who must save the Lego universe from the evil Lord Business (Will Ferrell) who wishes to glue the world together, thus ending creativity. From this fairly weak premise sprouts a movie deft in badinage and laden with visual gags and this is its saving grace; the audience is so busy chuckling along with the oddball humour and seeing how many characters they can name (many characters make cameos, Han Solo and Gandalf to name two), that any plot holes or continuity errors are quickly forgotten, leaving a movie which could have been completely ridiculous but is actually a great deal of fun. 3 / 5
On DVD: Captain Phillips 12A (134 mins)
Tom Hanks’s versatility never ceases to amaze. Last month he tackled the role of Walt Disney in Saving Mr Banks. Now he wrestles (metaphorically) with Somali pirates as the eponymous Captain Phillips. In charge of an industrial cargo ship, Phillips and his crew must voyage around Africa towards their destination. Unfortunately for them, this involves travelling within range of the Somali coastline. As soon as this happens, the action begins… It is the mix of Hanks, director Paul Greengrass and screenwriter Billy Ray which provide the high quality suspense here. From the brief parallel of the similarities and stark differences of family life in America and Somalia, we are whisked along into a world of schedule and protocol, all under the supposedly all-seeing eyes of Phillips, who runs a relaxed but no-nonsense operation. When this is disrupted, Greengrass’s eye for detail is given free reign. Once the pirates begin to home in on their target, the audience is given a crash-course in the procedures for dealing with pirates without the use of firearms. But it is when the pirates try to escape that the movie really hits its stride. Taking Phillips hostage, they attempt to get back to Somalia aboard a small, orange lifeboat. Greengrass uses the small, cramped space to squeeze every drop of tension from an already taut situation. Each facet of what is essentially a multi-layered movie is a given a brisk narrative pace which, at over two hours, it needs. As we enter awards season, it is to be expected that this movie will be paraded up and down red carpets worldwide but in this case, it deserves all the kudos coming its way. So watch, enjoy and, if you didn’t know it already, avoid Somali pirates! 4/ 5 36

St Joseph’s Primary School, Carryduff
A selection of P7 boys from St. Joseph’s enjoyed tremendous success at the Allianz Cumann na mBunscol An Dun Indoor Final. They entered the final by working extremely hard at their preliminary round in Castlewellan before Christmas. On the final day which was held in Kilkeel, they played three energetic and exciting games within their group. Due to consistent strong performances from each of the boys, they deservedly earned their place in the semi final against Aughlisnafin PS. They then met Carrick PS (Burren) in the final game of the day and after a fantastic display of skill and determination they returned to St. Joseph’s with runners up medals. This is a fantastic achievement for a team of eight boys who were exemplary in representing their school, exhibited wonderful teamwork and put in 100% effort into every match. Well done boys!! 38

Biblical Ballads
Helen Long, from Carryduff, Co Down, (and author of the Focus Nature articles) has just published a booklet of poems about Bible stories and characters, called ‘Biblical Ballads’. Many of the poems arose out of the stories and people she had studied in her parish Home Group. Her aim was to put the stories into an easy-to-read, rhyming form, which would be accessible to everyone, even children. With this in mind, a simple illustration accompanies each poem; these were all done by Helen’s friend, Pat Neill. Copies, costing £3, may be obtained from Helen by emailing ehelenlong@hotmail.com or calling 077 292 363 91. All profits will go to the NI Chest, Heart & Stroke charity.

Carr Primary School Students from Carr Primary School have been taking part in Book Week. A variety of fun filled activities have taken place in school to promote a love of books and reading. The whole school took part in a book themed treasure hunt, a bookmark competition was held and swap-a-book proved very popular. As well as this each pupil dressed up as a character from their class novel to conclude our celebrations. We would like to thank our parents and children for the Above - Some of P2/3 dressed as characters from Handa's Surprise hard work that Left Daniel dressed as Mr Fox! went into the beautiful costumes and props that children came to school in. St Ita’s Primary School St Ita’s pupils recently took part in the Masterpiece for the Mac 2013. The standard of work was extremely high again this year and the judging panel found it enormously difficult to choose the winners of this year’s competition. Congratulations to Aimee and Anna from P6 who both had winning entries in the 2013 Masterpiece for the Mac competition. In class, pupils studied famous artists and then they produced their own masterpiece in the style of their favourite artist. Anna was inspired by Andy Warhol and Aimee’s inspiration was Matisse. Well done to Aimee and Anna whose artwork will be exhibited in the MAC this February. The judging panel liked Aimee’s masterpiece so much that it has been chosen as the Overall Winner of the competition. Aimee’s class were invited to the Launch of the Masterpiece for the Mac and got an exclusive tour of the MAC galleries and their two theatre spaces. Aimee and Anna were presented with a beautiful art box.

St Ita’s hosted this year’s Ormeau Area Credit Union Quiz. Eight teams from local primary schools including Holy Rosary, St Michael’s, St Joseph’s and St Ita’s took part. The quiz consisted of 12 rounds of questions which at times challenged teachers as well as pupils. At the end of the last round of questions, St Ita’s triumphant Credit Union Quiz only 4 points separated first and last. In the Under 10 team with Principal, Mrs Browne and category, St Ita’s and St Joseph’s were tied at the top of P7 teacher, Mrs Kavanagh. the leader board. A very tense tie-break then took place which saw St Ita’s triumph! In the over 10 category St Ita’s lost by a single point to St Joseph’s. Well done to St Ita’s and to all the other teams who made the quiz such an enjoyable and competitive day. Many thanks to Julie Mullan and all her team from Ormeau Credit Union for organising the day. St Ita’s now go to the Regional Final in March. We wish them good luck! Please mention the Carryduff Focus Magazine when contacting advertisers

Millennium Integrated Primary School The New Year has begun with a busy schedule of activities. The Board of Governors held their AGM and delivered a very relevant and topical talk to parents regarding internet safety. Thanks to Mr Corrigan, P7 teacher, for his expertise and thank you to all those parents that attended. The talk was supported by Mr Tom Jackson from Microsoft (Northern Ireland) who praised the school for its forward thinking approach to the use of Mrs Roulston with Jenny Cherry and technology in education. We were delighted to host representatives from the Integrated Education Fund and the Magheramourne Foundation to a special school assembly to officially open our new classroom. The £75,000 classroom was jointly funded by the two organisations and has enabled the school to cater for a second Primary 1 class. The new space has also given us learning support rooms and a dedicated sensory room to help those children with special needs.
Marie Baird from the Magheramourne Foundation with some P1 children
The visitors, including Paul Caskey and Brian Smith from the IEF, Jenny Cherry and Marie Baird from the Magheramourne Foundation, as well as representatives from Millennium Board The choir sing to the visitors from the IEF and Magheramourne of Governors, were treated to some special songs at assembly and were shown around the new classroom. The school were delighted to be able to present the IEF with a cheque for more than £1400 as part of their Christmas fundraising collections. With the weather being so stormy at the moment, it was an opportune time for our P6 assembly based on – Wind!! We learned about the Beaufort scale for measuring wind and how the jet stream determines our weather and how much winds blow. We learned about the different sports that use wind such as sailing, wind-surfing, kiteboarding and paragliding. P6 showed us how kites have been used during the wars for delivering Primary 6 kite flyers messages and how kites are also used for sport in countries such as China and Afghanistan. P6 wrote their own poems about wind and made their own kites. The assembly concluded with a ‘Sing off’ between the boys and girls with all the songs having the word ‘Wind’ in the title or in the lyrics. It was too close to call but the children certainly did their best at belting out those 80s power ballads! 42
