Welcome

Hello again everyone,

Articles: 6 Technology

I’ve had a really busy few weeks. I spent almost 2 weeks in Edinburgh, helping my daughter and her friend hunt for a new flat, as their current lease is up in a couple of months. It was a fascinating and stressful process - the good flats get snapped up so quickly as the competition is fierce.

And then there’s the flats that are still available after being on the websites for a week (that’s a long time in that world). Well, we found out why. There was the lovely (in pictures) flat that smelt of damp as soon as the agent swung the door open. That was a ‘NO’. And another lovely flat in what I was told was in the best street in Stockbridge (a lovely villagey area of Edinburgh with lots of quirky shops and cafes). It had storage heaters and a hideous gas fire in the living room that gave me the heeby jeebies just looking at it. Of course, the gas fire was strategically left out of the photos! But sometimes things are just meant to be - we got in early to see a truly lovely flat with no gas fire and no damp. The owners loved us and bingo! A new lease has been signed. Now for the packing...... Until next time!

The best tech toys to take outside

Some of the most entertaining outdoor toys are the simplest, such as the cute Swivel Car (around £22, with lots of firms offering very similar products). It’s a ride-on car with a difference: instead of pedalling or propelling it with your feet, you swivel the steering wheel and that generates movement. It’s small enough for toddlers and tough enough for big kids and even the odd adult. If you’d rather go for something more traditional, the Cozy Coupe around £49 - has been a favourite of families for more than 30 years, and the iconic red and yellow version has been joined by dinosaur and police car versions.

to give them control of something fun, there’s a huge selection of radio controlled vehicles ranging from the toddler-friendly Little Tykes Tyre Twister (£39) to exceptionally fast scale models of performance cars such as Lamborghinis and Porsches. Even the most expensive of these are much cheaper than they used to be, with top-end models usually coming in well below £70.

Radio controlled cars are fun, but radio controlled flying machines are even more fun. You know you’re living in the future when you can walk into your local toy shop and come out with a smartphone-controlled drone Complex toys can be fun too, of helicopter. Drones start at around course. One kind of toy that’s £20 for basic ones and reach improved dramatically in recent £190 for Star Wars-themed years is the electric car or bike for models, and drones with built-in kids. It’s possible to get a decent cameras start at around £60. If trike for less than £40 that delivers you want to get serious, you can 50 minutes of movement between find a good selection of advanced charges, while around the £200 drones with HD cameras and mark you’ll find impressive optical video stabilisers from replicas of grown-up cars such as around £300, rising to over £1,000 BMW’s futuristic electric i8. for high-end models. Remember that such vehicles do One word of warning with drones: take a while to charge, so make their propellers can be sharp and sure you plug them in the night cause injury if they bump into before you want to use them. people, so it’s a good idea to look If you’d rather not let your child loose behind the wheel but want

giving it to a child or using it near kids or pets. And there are restrictions on where you can and can’t fly drones, such as in crowded areas or near airports. It’s a good idea to check up on the law before spending any money. There are also concerns over privacy: the neighbours probably won’t appreciate you flying a camera over their garden. Do you remember the days of potato guns and water pistols? They’ve become a lot more sophisticated, with products such as Nerf guns ranging from around £20 to the ridiculously overpowered N-Strike Mega Mastodon (£99), which fires 24 foam darts from a motorised revolving drum. Between it and the super-powered, super-soaking water pistols that have more in common with water cannons than the water pistols you remember from your own childhood, be wary of the weaponry you give your kids - because you can be sure you’ll be on the receiving end of the foam darts or freezing cold jets of water. Kate McCulla, a registered dietician, started her career in the NHS in 2002. Having spent over 12 years working in weight management, Kate thinks that weight loss diets can contribute to the problems many people experience around food, and this can perpetuate yo-yo dieting cycles. Based on her experiences of people struggling to lose weight, she has published a book (Diet Dilemmas) outlining common mistakes that people make, that almost guarantee some initial weight loss, but followed by weight regain. The need for another approach is clear – Kate will help you find a way of eating that suits you, and help you take back control of your eating and your weight. Kate also has a keen interest in irritable bowel, which is thought to affect 1 in 10 people. This can be a painful and debilitating condition which people find difficult to discuss. Treating irritable bowel may only require a few simple dietary measures, or it may require a low FODMAP diet. If you struggle with your weight or have irritable bowel, Kate will be able to help you in her private nutrition services.

The Dieting

Dilemma

You go on a diet. You lose weight. So far so good. At that point in time, you may consider that the diet ‘worked’. But what happens next? For a staggering 95% of people, weight is regained. Losing weight is not the challenge. Keeping it off is. Diets rarely achieve this. This is not your fault – diets are unlikely to deliver lasting results. And here’s why. Diets are a fast-track to weight loss - who wouldn’t want a shortcut? But diets completely bypass and ignore the cause of your weight problem. They take you straight to the desired outcome – weight loss - but they do not address the eating problems that caused you to be overweight in the first place. So weight is regained. Your problem is the way you eat when you are not on a diet. By avoiding addressing the true problem, diets cannot offer you a good solution. No diet will ‘work’ if you don’t invest time understanding why you eat the way you normally do. Most people who want to lose weight consider that their weight is their problem. With this focus on weight, the obvious decision is to diet. With predicable weight regain. If the focus was switched to identifying and improving unhelpful eating behaviours, then weight loss could follow naturally. Weight is not the problem. Your way of eating is. The best reasons to eat are to satisfy hunger, for nutrition and for food pleasure. Your starting point for meaningful food improvements is not to focus on what you are eating, but to focus on how and why you eat. Less helpful reasons to eat include habits, boredom, comfort eating, eating food ‘just because it’s there’, guilt induced eating…..there are numerous reasons why we eat as we eat, and your challenge becomes identifying and improving yours. This needs to happen in the context of your normal eating patterns, not in the false world of a diet. Identify and improve your food problems before changing what you eat. Using the analogy of a house, consider this initial stage like getting the foundations sound. Without a solid foundation, it won’t be long until the cracks appear, with eventual collapse. If you have a history of losing weight, only to put it back on again, it’s time for a different approach. General advice is never a substitute for a professional opinion.

doesn’t worry them, I do not know.

Whether by neglect, a careless attitude or financial constraints, in the longer nights of the winter months I noticed quite a few cars with only one working headlamp or rear light. I’ve not made an in-depth investigation into the state of UK car servicing, but I have good hearsay evidence from dealer’s service departments that more than a few cars are coming into them way past their service interval dates and with a lot of niggling faults on them too, of which failed headlamps are one. Whether this is down to owners being so financially stretched they are delaying paying service charges, or not bothering to check their cars are working 100% or, if they do, finding such faults

But went it comes to external lights they should bother. It’s an offence not to have working lights, and for obvious reasons. I know changing lamps on modern cars is an utter pain, I’ve had personal experience of taking half the engine out just to get to the back of a headlight, but that’s not an excuse not to change it as soon as you know it’s faulty. Only having one headlight means you could miss that child stepping into the road, and the consequence of no brake-lights needs no explanation. For us drivers, on meeting your single-lamped car on a dark night our first reaction is that you are a motorbike, so we can prepare to overtake you accordingly - until our lights pick out the rest of your ill-illuminated bodywork. And by then, to take avoiding action may be too late. By Iain Betson

A coconut hair treatment, homemade body scrub and the perfect day-to-night palette…meet your new summer beauty kit. Lighter evenings are a great excuse for afterwork drinks. Bobbi Brown’s new Sultry Nude Eye and Cheek Palette, £48, is perfect for popping in your handbag ready for cocktail hour. The four eyeshadows have a slight metallic shimmer and the blush suits most skin tones. Easy to apply, with great staying power, the powders are housed in a very lust-worthy gold case. The only downside is the lack of brushes. See www.bobbibrown.co.uk. If your lips are feeling a bit dry and flaky, Clarins’ Instant Light Lip Comfort Oil, £19, could be the answer. It’s packed with nourishing oils, including hazelnut and jojoba, so helps to soothe and moisturise lips. Less sticky than lipgloss, it hides dry patches and adds a touch of colour. The Instant Light Lip Comfort Oil is available in four shades, including a lip plumping Mint. My favourite is Honey Glam,

A sugar scrub is ideal for exfoliating legs that have been hidden away for months on end. And it’s surprisingly quick and easy to make one at home. Just add around two tablespoons of olive oil to four tablespoons of sugar. You’re aiming for a mixture that’s easy to massage into your skin, but not so liquid that it’ll drip all over your bath mat. The sugar acts as a natural exfoliator, and the olive oil is very moisturising, so it’ll leave your skin feeling much smoother. You can also add extra ingredients to the basic scrub. Honey helps your skin to repair itself and retain water, so try adding a tablespoon to the mix. If you’re not keen on the smell of olive oil, fragrance the scrub with a couple of drops of essential oil. There are four core products in Primavera’s new Harmonising Rose and Osmanthus body care range – a body cream, bath oil, body wash and body oil. Designed to nourish skin and provide a real treat for the senses, the products are organic and full of natural ingredients. The bath oil (£22.50) is perfect for a pampering soak after a long day. It smells amazing, and leaves skin feeling soft and smooth. See www.pravera.co.uk. For hair in need of some TLC, try Neal’s Yard Remedies’ Rosemary & Cedarwood Hair Treatment. Organic coconut oil is blended with essential oils of organic rosemary, cedarwood, and lavender. You only need a small amount, less than a teaspoon. Coconut oil is solid at room temperature, but dissolves into a liquid when heated, so just warm it between your hands, then massage it through your hair. You can leave it on for 30 minutes, but I like to use it as an overnight treatment. (As an added bonus, the lavender scent helps me to sleep.) It leaves hair feeling soft, sleek and much more manageable. £6.50 from www. nealsyardremedies.com.

If your dog has ever ingested a poisonous substance, you’ll know the sudden and devastating effect it can have on their health. Unfortunately, three commonly used foods regularly cause serious issues for dogs, often requiring emergency treatment by a vet. Chocolate contains a poisonous substance called theobromine, which is derived from the cocoa plant. Amongst other symptoms it can cause severe vomiting, diarrhoea, high temperature, irregular heart rhythm, and fitting. Dark chocolate contains more theobromine than milk or white chocolate, and it is not unusual for a dog to need veterinary intervention even when a small amount has been consumed.

All members of the allium family, these foods can cause anaemia in

Cats are amusing and fun to be around, but sometimes their behaviour just seems downright bizarre. If you’ve ever wondered why your cat behaves in a certain way, from kneading its paws to eating plastic bags, we might be able to offer a little insight. Head butts - When your cat bumps its head against you, it means they’re trying to bond and is an expression of affection. They’re also demonstrating trust in you and marking you out as a ‘member of their club’. Staring - Staring is a common trait in cats, if a little unnerving when you’re on the receiving end. They generally stare at their prey before pouncing, but in your case it could be a determined request for food or entertainment. You should also rule out any potential medical reasons if their pupils are constantly dilated - it could be the result of an eye or other health issue. Eating plastic - Eating

dogs and are poisonous both in their raw and cooked form - even something as innocuous as onion gravy can cause a severe reaction in some dogs. They contain organosulphides which attack the red blood cells over a period of time. After a few days you might notice your dog has an upset stomach, is lethargic, sleepy, or breathing rapidly. These can all be fatal to your dog, although the dried versions are believed to be more toxic. Some dogs are able to eat these foods with no illeffects, but others experience serious illness over a period of several days, with vomiting and diarrhoea, and in some cases kidney failure a few days after ingestion. https://www.pdsa.org.uk/taking-care-of-your-pet/ poisons-and-hazards http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/media/605397/ poisons.pdf By Ann Haldon

non-food items such as plastic, paper, wool or even electrical cords may be a sign of ‘pica’. This is an eating disorder that can be caused by dietary deficiency, stress, boredom or in some cases an underlying health problem. Kneading - When your cat sits on your knee and starts to knead, it’s a sign of contentment and is usually accompanied by a loud purring. They also have scent glands on the bottom of their paw pads, and may be kneading to leave their scent behind – effectively claiming you as their own. http://www.pethealthnetwork.com/cat-health/cat-behavior/6strange-cat-behaviors-finally-explained http://www.vetstreet.com/our-pet-experts/10-strange-catbehaviors-explained http://www.sheknows.com/pets-and-animals/ articles/994845/25-random-cat-behaviors-finally-explained/ page:2 By Ann Haldon

A really quick and easy snack, starter or light supper dish made with just five ingredients.

2 large red peppers, deseeded and cut into strips

1 tbsp olive oil

250g puff pastry

150g Camembert cheese, thinly sliced

150g bag rocket and watercress salad

Add extra flavour by spreading a thin layer of pesto sauce or tomato chutney in the pastry square before topping with the pepper and cheese.

34

Preheat the oven to 220C, 200C Fan, Gas Mark 7. Place the pepper strips in a shallow roasting tin. Drizzle over the olive oil and roast for 15 minutes until just tender. Leave to cool. Roll the pastry out on a lightly floured surface to a rough square shape the thickness of a pound coin. Trim with a sharp knife to make a 26cm square. Cut into 4 x 13cm squares. Place the squares of pastry on a baking sheet lined with baking paper. With the tip of the knife, score a border in each pastry square about 1cm in from the outer edge. Top each pastry square with some of the roasted pepper strips and cheese slices. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes until the pastry is risen and golden and the cheese has melted. Serve warm with the salad leaves.

PLANNING APPLICATION FOR TK MAXX - DRUMKEEN RETAIL PARK Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council planning committee have just passed an application for TK Maxx in Drumkeen Retail Park. The planning application was passed 8 votes in favour to 0 against after a mammoth planning committee hearing lasting nearly 2 hours. Vice-Chair of the planning committee, Cllr Nathan Anderson said, " I was very pleased to speak in support of the application. TK max will bring approximately 35 jobs into the area, deliver £150,000 per annum into council rates and provide a turnover of £6 million each year." In a recent survey of 335 customers it was demonstrated that 87% were in favour of a TK Maxx on the site. The unit has been vacant for 5 years since JJB vacated. Cllr Nathan Anderson welcomed the decision saying, "I believe that it is great that finally the unit is being put to good use. This decision will bring many positives to the area and financial benefits. It is great to see that popular substantive retailers are wishing to spend money in our Council area. Lisburn and Castlereagh area is very much open for business.” 38

COFFEE MORNING IN AID OF CANCER RESEARCH To celebrate Intercultural Friendship, a Coffee morning will be held on Wednesday 10th May 11.30am to 1.30pm at Lough Moss Leisure Centre. Tickets, in aid of Cancer Research, cost £5, pay at the door. Everyone Welcome

CAIRNSHILL PRIMARY SCHOOL Over a few weeks in March, the children in the nursery have been carefully observing the seasonal changes occurring in nursery garden-daffodils popping up their heads, the cherry blossom bursting into full bloom, crocuses and tulips wakening up from beneath the soil and there have even been some days when coats haven’t been required for outdoor play! These signs could only mean one thing-our annual visit from our friends at Streamvale Farm was due and as sure as Spring arrives, on Wednesday 15th March, Kate and June came to visit, accompanied by their cuddly friends. We had a wonderful time together, singing Spring-time songs, hearing all about the baby animals being born on the farm and listening to a story about a banty hen distributing her eggs in peculiar places…but the best part of our time together was being able to cuddle the baby bunny rabbits (did you know they were called ‘kittens’?) and watching a little kid having his bottle, just like some of our baby brothers and sisters. However, the best was kept to last when we used our very gentle and kind hands to handle the baby chicks who were so cute that we all wanted to each take one home!

Bogus Callers Before opening your front door to any caller, make sure your back door and any accessible windows are secure. Put your door chain on. (If you don’t have one we recommend you get one). If the person claims to represent a business or organisation, ask them for ID and check it carefully (still with the door chain on). Genuine tradesmen should carry a photographic identification card and won't mind showing it to you. The QUICK CHECK scheme can be used to check the identity of callers. Call Freephone 0800 013 22 90 and an operator can quickly check with a range of service providers that the person at the door is a genuine representative.

NORTHERN IRELAND HOSPICE SHOPS at BALLYGOWAN ROAD & UPPER LISBURN ROAD require volunteers to work in their shops, for as little as a morning or afternoon each week. No experience is necessary.

SILVER SURFERS TRAINING DAY On Thursday 4 May, hundreds of business volunteers will be poised and ready to provide FREE IT taster sessions, helping people over the age of 50 to get to grips with the Internet, email, Skype and social media. Located in libraries across Northern Ireland, Silver Surfers’ Day is back once again by popular demand – both from older people and from the volunteers. These events are organised by Business in the Community in partnership with the Department of Finance, and supported by Libraries NI. Communities Manager for Business in the Community, Hilary Hanberry said: “We all know someone who isn’t online. It might be your mum or dad, your gran, your next door neighbour or even a friend. If so, please encourage them to come along to a Silver Surfers’ Day training session. They will be hosted in local libraries across Northern Ireland (nearest one to BT8 is Ormeau Library, but also in Lisburn and Belfast Central Library) and they are easy to book – all you have to do is contact your local library and a FREE training session will be organised. All of our training sessions are taken by friendly volunteers who are passionate about sharing their skills. They are all very patient, and get a real sense of reward from helping others. The sessions are one -to-one and can cover a range of things, from learning how to stay connected to friends and family through Facebook or Skype; to learning how to order your grocery shopping online, or perhaps even setting up an email account. We’ve had great feedback from participants in previous years who found the sessions very worthwhile, and I’d encourage anyone who is keen to find out more about the internet to come along.” Alternatively, you can call the Libraries NI Customer Services Line on 0345 4504 580 (Monday to Friday 9:00 am – 5:00 pm) For more information visit www.bitcni.org.uk Please mention the BT8 Focus Magazine when contacting advertisers
