to your November magazine
Hello again everyone,
The run-up to Christmas has well and truly begun. I had soooo many community page items this month, I had to work hard to fit them all in! The community pages have had a little revamp for this issue, I hope you like them. Feel free to let me know what you think - the general consensus so far seems to be ‘So much better than before’. Gee, thanks! Definitely a back-handed compliment, that one. Now, I’m not one for blowing my own trumpet (much) but I’m very pleased to say my little magazine is having it’s eighth birthday. The November issue in 2006 was the very first one published, and I remember being very nervous about it all. I needn't have worried, you, my lovely readers have been very kind and are always telling me how much you love the Focus. Thanks for your support over the years! Thinking recently about how much Carryduff has changed since 2006 - I’d like to encourage you all to attend the Carryduff Regeneration Forum meeting on Thurs 6th November at 7pm in Lough Moss. It’s the perfect opportunity to make sure your voice is heard. Not even enough room for that on the community pages! Until next time....
Deirdre

Movie Focus
By Peter Stevenson
AT THE CINEMA: Dolphin Tale 2 U (107 mins)
‘Indifferent’ is probably the best way to describe the majority of people’s feelings towards this movie. Cute as the dolphin may be, it is an obscured hero in the movie world. In these days of Frozen, Ironman and Lord of the Rings, can a family film about the highs and lows of rehabilitating an injured dolphin really compete? Apparently, when the dolphin is Winter, it can. Inexplicably, Dolphin Tale has become a huge hit on the ‘family films’ market so a sequel was inevitable. The first film nursed Winter back to health; now, can she make room for newly rescued companion Hope? The first thing that hits you about this movie is the presence of some truly huge stars, namely Harry Connick Jr. and Morgan Freeman, who seem to have misplaced their acting talent and have just shown up to recite their lines. The younger heroes from the first film (Nathan Gamble and Cozi Zuehisdorff) have developed into awkwardly flirting teenagers, but there any character development ends. As much as I want to call their acting terrible, I must admit, they are given very little to work with. Director Charles Martin Smith (also the screenwriter) introduces no fancy shots, spectacular filming or inventive ways to capture Winter and the other dolphins. If Ang Lee can do it in Life of Pi with animals which do not actually exist, then surely Smith can catch some aquatic acrobatics by dolphins in a tank. Overall, this movie is dull, dated and predictable. Do yourself and your family a favour and rent this month’s DVD instead, Mr Peabody & Sherman is much better. 2 / 5
On DVD: Mr Peabody and Sherman U (92 mins) It is always difficult when adapting a well-known franchise and putting it up on the big screen (look at what they did to Scooby-Doo!). Perhaps, however, Mr Peabody and Sherman do not count as they are primarily known in the US. Either way, it is hard to combine history, time-travel and wacky mayhem and still end up with a coherent, structured and heartwarming story but Mr Peabody & Sherman tries. For those unfamiliar with our heroes, Mr Peabody (Ty Burrell) is a hyperintelligent dog who adopts an average boy by the name of Sherman (Max Charles). Before his schooling has begun, Mr Peabody builds a timemachine in order to teach Sherman about the significant events and people in history. On Sherman’s first day at school, he fights with a girl named Penny (Ariel Winter) so Mr Peabody decides that, in order to smooth things over, Penny and her parents must be wined and dined. But, when Sherman accidentally lets slip about the time-machine, Penny decides to go joy-riding, and so the adventure begins… History can be extremely dull but it can also be exciting and fun. The writers of this movie, however, have decided to bypass most historical accuracy and focus on any zaniness which can be plucked from serious historical events. Therefore, we get Marie Antoinette (Lauri Fraser) greedily obsessed with cake, a spoiled brat named Tutankhamun (Zach Callison), Agamemnon (Patrick Warburton) with a BO problem and Da Vinci (Stanley Tucci) on the verge of a nervous breakdown because the Mona Lisa will not smile. Fortunately, the jokes are all in good taste and are genuinely funny with some discreet nuances so, while the kids are mesmerised by the talking dog, adults can enjoy more subtle and complex historical japes. 4 / 5 32

ST JOSEPH’S PRIMARY SCHOOL St. Joseph’s did tremendously well at the Flahavan’s Porridge Athletics NI Cross Country League on Tuesday 14th October. The children enjoyed a glorious morning in Downpatrick. Both the girls and boys team completed the 1000m event. They pushed themselves to the very end and they gave each other lots of encouragement. As a result, the boys finished strongly in first place overall out of nine schools and the girls were second place. This is a wonderful achievement and they are eagerly training now for their next event.
POLICE ADVICE Local police have warned those who continue to get behind the wheel of a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs that it will not be tolerated. The warning comes after provisional figures show 31 people were arrested for drink/drug driving related offences across C District (Ards, Castlereagh, North Down and Down) in September alone. Indeed, a total of 13 people were arrested over the weekend of 4th & 5th October alone and a further six were arrested over 11th/12th October weekend. Superintendent Brian Kee said: "It is still shocking and extremely disappointing that despite all of the warnings, there are still people who disregard the safety of themselves and others by continuing to drink or take drugs and then drive. "We will continue to focus on those who are putting themselves and others at risk. We will seek detections and prosecutions at every opportunity. We know the vast majority of right thinking people do realise that drink or drug driving is shameful and unacceptable but clearly there is still an irresponsible minority who ignore all advice and warnings. These people risk killing or injuring themselves, their family, friends and other innocent road users. "We would like to thank those in our community who report instances of drink or drug driving and we encourage anyone who believes they spot an offender to report it immediately. "The consequences of drink or drug driving can be life shattering. Think about the consequences to yourself and your family of being involved in a serious collision. How would you feel if your selfish actions resulted in a serious, life changing injury to yourself, a family member or another innocent person? What if you killed someone? "The message here is a very simple one and we want local people to take heed - NEVER, EVER, DRINK OR TAKE DRUGS AND DRIVE."

MILLENNIUM INTEGRATED PRIMARY SCHOOL As part of our Wednesday afternoon activities we are delighted to introduce our ‘Gardening Club’ which is being taken by Sheila Smart. Sheila has been coming into school on Wednesdays to put some colour into the grounds around Millennium. She is working with a group of children to grow fruit and vegetables, plant flowers in planters around the school and keep the flower beds under control. The club will also be developing a sensory garden and doing art related activities. Sheila is keen to teach the children about where our food comes from and will be teaching them about the cycle from seed to produce to plate. The children will be cooking with the vegetables they grow. First up this term will be onions! Sheila has also been working to brighten up our Nursery garden and, along with the Nursery children, has planted winter flowering plants in tubs. Underneath the plants there are seeds and bulbs that the children can enjoy in the spring. We would like to say a huge thank you to Sheila for her contribution to Millennium as well as the local garden centres for their kind donations of equipment, planters, compost and plants. Watch this space for more photos of the developing garden.
