Welcome to the November issue of the Carryduff Focus I must be easily amused. Have you noticed just how often people here use the word ’situation’? If the husband and I are sitting watching the news and that word is used, we both feel a strange compulsion to repeat it loudly! Usually in unison! I have to admit, if a local journalist manages not to use it, my respect for them increases ten-fold. If I ever miss hearing it for an hour or two, I just have to put on Stephen Nolan on the radio, and there it is! It’s a very peculiarly Belfast thing. I try so hard not to use it myself. After poking fun at it for so long, it just feels wrong. However, there are some situations where only that word will do! (obviously!) Purely in the interests of research, my daughter in Edinburgh has tried dropping it into conversation with her flatmates, with absolutely no reaction (two young ladies from the North of England, a guy from Scotland and a guy from America). Yet, she also used it in a conversation with a guy from her course - Ben from Carrick - and he laughed immediately. Now she wants a list of Belfastisms to entertain her flatmates with. You know the sort of thing - buck eejit, you’re a quare geg, ‘bout ye, aye dead on, haven't a baldy notion, your oul head, what’s the craic? I could go on... but it’s time to get this magazine off to print, so it is. Have a great November. Until next time...

Every year, heating our homes becomes ever more expensive, and as a result we do all kinds of things to cut our bills: we make sure our homes are properly insulated, turn the thermostat down a notch and do our best to save energy. But no matter what kind of heating system you have, there's a very good chance you're heating your entire home rather than the room you're using. Wouldn't it be great if you could heat just the bit you're in and do it quickly so you don't have to sit shivering? That's the thinking behind Dyson's fan heaters, which use the firm's "air multiplier" technology to send a steady stream of hot air without the buffeting you get from normal fan heaters. They aren't cheap expect to pay £249 for a heater, or £349 for one that can cool air in the summer - but they're safe, effective and extremely efficient. If you'd rather not spend quite so much on a heater, halogen heaters are worth considering: instead of heating the air, they heat whatever you point them at - and they do so instantly, which is a real boon if you've just come home from a typically cold November day. Prices start at
6
around £15 for a basic model. For larger rooms, it's worth looking for heaters that can rotate: that enables them to heat a wider area than immobile heaters can reach. Make sure they have anti-tilt shut-offs too, so that they automatically switch themselves off if they're accidentally toppled. The cheapest heaters around are fan heaters, which as the name suggests use a fan to blow air over a heating element. According to the Energy Saving Trust they aren't less efficient than other kinds of heating, but the less powerful the fan the longer it'll take them to heat a room: we wouldn't recommend trying to heat a high-ceilinged room with an £8 fan heater from the local supermarket. If you spend a lot of time using a computer you'll know that your fingers are often the first things to feel the cold. Technology has the answer to that too: V8 Tools' heated computer keyboard is exactly what it sounds like, although for the time being you'll need to import one from the US. Avoid USB-powered heating devices: products such as USBpowered Monkey Hand Warmers are novelty gifts, and are really
not practical products. If you often suffer from frozen feet there's a gadget for that too: the AccuLux foot warming mat, a flexible heating mat that's designed to make your tootsies toasty. Expect to pay around £39.99. Humans aren't the only creatures to benefit from heating pads: they’re available for pets too. A quick search on eBay uncovers all kinds of electric pad heaters for dog and cat beds, with prices as low as £19.99. If you'd rather not leave anything electrical near your pets, microwaveable heat pads do much the same job for slightly less money. While you're microwaving things for your pets, why not warm up some pads for yourself? You can try a pair of microwaveable slippers, a microwaveable hand warmer or a microwaveable neck wrap, and if you're suffering from sports injuries or arthritis you might find they help ease your symptoms too. Alternatively you might like to try the Heat In A Click Muscle Warm Pad, which quickly heats up to 54 degrees celsius and last for 20 minutes to two hours depending on the size of pad you buy.

It looked pretty, but there was more plant than building!
It's funny how attached you can become to inanimate objects. It was only a summerhouse, after all - a glorified, double-doored, glassfronted shed. And in its time it has mainly housed folding chairs, the lawnmower, chicken bedding and the cat. Even so, I was sorry to be parting company with it.
not to stand in the middle of it and pull. Nothing salvageable was wasted. The doors went to a neighbour to become elongated cold frames; likewise the bigger windows. We kept the smaller ones to bring on beans and butternut squash plants in the future. Plus, there was enough kindling - or rather, there will be - to fill our wood store.
The next stage in my summerhouse grieving process occurred when Anne took me shed shopping, since we clearly didn't need another summerhouse and our actual shed was also on its last legs. Summerhouse still sounded so When you run out of spaces on bright and optimistic, even this the doors to fit replacement hinges, it's time to call it a day. late in the year, despite its current appearance. The roof I wandered around the shed had become open plan in yard, surly and unimpressed, places and the Russian Vine like a schoolboy having to buy (not for nothing is it sometimes new shoes for next term. And known as mile-a-minute) had then I saw it, framed in golden infiltrated and exploited the sunlight: a wonder shed. With guttering, several joints and glass along one side to let in three places along one side light for propagation and so panel. So, all things that we can watch the birds, considered, it was time to and enough space for my make a difficult decision. time and no money down - an all-round winner. However, now that we'd
prepared the ground, it was time to really prepare the ground by levelling it and adding a layer of sand. As the shed needs to sit on blocks and these have to be aligned and spaced perfectly, Anne waited until I'd gone out to work. A neighbour popped over to help; the same one who corrected my comedy coat rack (now you see it, now you pick it - and a pile of coats - up off the floor). By the time I returned home, all I needed to do was position some plastic sheeting, so that the cat didn't feel tempted to leave an organic time capsule in the sand. The shed people delivered on time and put the shed up on site. The block work was, thanks to my non-involvement, perfect. Even the cat flap seemed to meet with Porsha's approval. She is a pre-named, rescue cat, so I take no responsibility. In the evening, a deputation of neighbours came up to take a look around the shed (with torches). Like I say, it's a small village and not much happens here. One person asked, with genuine concern, if we planned to rent it out to holidaymakers. I quickly shed some light on the matter. Focus on Movies
By Peter Stevenson
AT THE CINEMA: Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 U, (95 mins) 2009 saw the release of the prequel to this movie (relax, a short synopsis is given at the start), an odd concoction of mad inventions, killer food storms and lessons about doing the right thing. Four years later, right on schedule, a sequel comes along, promising to be more madcap, more outrageous and even odder. Does it deliver? The most important thing about an animated movie is, surprise, surprise, the animation…it is colourful, engaging and ultimately, loads of fun. What it lacks however, is that air of sophistication we get from Pixar, for example (think Finding Nemo). The eccentric silliness of the ‘monsters’ is admittedly handled well. While not being scary (this is a family film), they could very easily become dull and grating. As it is, as with the story in general, they bring brief moments of humour, mixed with mild threat and overall zaniness. The dialogue is a patchy affair; jokes, punch-lines and a barrage of puns will have adults in the audience searching frantically for the exit. Again, sophistication is lacking. The level of conversation should be higher than it is in order to include everyone but at least the kids seem to like it. For such a silly premise, at its heart, this movie is surprisingly touching; its message about loyalty and its inevitable happy ending could have been sickeningly saccharine and schmaltzy, instead it is heartfelt and, dare I say it, believable. 3 / 5
On DVD: The Bling Ring 15 (90 mins) If you yearn for a movie which depicts the vacuous, empty shell of modern teen-dom, look no further. In this movie, a group of five equally empty-headed ‘friends’ (the end of the movie explains why inverted commas are required) use technology (Facebook) and the culture of celebrity worship to rob the A-list of Los Angeles while they are out of town. It is surprising, but probably true enough, the thrills these airheads get from this minimal contact with their idols, indeed one of the best quotes comes from Nicki (Emma Watson) who, when caught, cares, not about punishment, but asks: ‘What did Lindsay (Lohan) say?’ The acting is hit-and-miss. The most absorbing acting comes from Leslie Mann (This is 40) as Nicki and Emily’s (Georgia Rock) new-age mother Laurie, a woman who is home-schooling her kids, despite her syllabus seeming to come directly from self-help books. The biggest flaw in director Sofia Coppola’s depiction of the five members of the ‘bling ring’ is that, being so similar, they meld into one; it is difficult to pick out even one idiosyncrasy or identifiable characteristic of any one of them. Some would argue that is deliberately done to reinforce the blasé attitude of this social milieu but it makes the movie dull, even if only for 90 minutess. Coppola has been criticised in the past for making movies with which she is comfortable, despite their being emotionally empty (Marie Antoinette). The Bling Ring goes just beyond these parameters, creating sympathy, if not empathy from her audience, particularly through the character of Marc (Israel Broussard). These characters just do not appreciate how pointless their ‘goals’ are and this is ultimately heart-breaking. Don’t expect a sequel, I’m not. 3/5 38

Millennium Integrated Primary School The past term has seen our new Primary 1 classes settle well into life at Millennium IPS. This settling-in period was marked with a Harvest Service and thanksgiving. All the P1 children and their parents were welcomed to the school with a special assembly and presentation of certificates. The children from P3 and P4 sang beautifully at the service. The Salvation Army came too and were delighted to receive donations of food parcels for needy families. The boys and girls in Primary 5, 6 and 7 spent an enjoyable afternoon with representatives from the Belfast Giants ice hockey team. They were given an informative talk about healthy lifestyle choices, highlighting the importance of diet and exercise. One of the players then took the children through a series of exercises for circuit training. Before they left, the Giants gave a number of tickets to school to bring a group of children to an ice hockey game. No doubt there will be great competition to be chosen to go. Volunteer Awards
St Joseph’s Primary School
Castlereagh Borough Council has honoured the achievements of volunteers and volunteering groups across the Borough during an awards ceremony held at La Mon Hotel. The aim of the awards was to formally recognise the valuable contribution and time commitment of volunteers in Castlereagh and celebrate their dedication and service in helping others within their community.
There was great excitement surrounding European Day of Languages 2013 as classes enjoyed a fantastic variety of events this year. The P7 classes welcomed four students from Aquinas who taught lessons in Spanish and French. The P5 classes dressed in costume and performed a French assembly for their parents and carers. This was a dazzling array of songs, actions, dance and role play which allowed the P5 pupils to show, just how much French they now know!
Killynure Community Association won in the Supporting Volunteer Award (Small Group) 2013 category. The award was presented by Tim McGarry, Mayor of Castlereagh, Councillor David Drysdale and Minister for Social Development, Nelson McCausland. Congratulations to all involved.
P3 -P7 classes welcomed back Madam Collins who led really fun activities & games all teaching French. While P1 & P2 classes enjoyed their usual Irish lessons with Mrs Farrell. All of the classes in KS2 loved taking part in the flag trail, the poster design competition and the ‘Hello’ in different European languages competition. EDL was a great success as we all improved our languages while having good fun! Well done everyone!!!
