It’s been a busy month. The bank of Mum and Dad has taken a bit of a battering. We’ve been over to Edinburgh to settle our daughter into University. And that meant shopping, shopping and more shopping. We were in Argos so often we were on nodding terms with the staff (Hello, it’s just us - back AGAIN). Anyway, as a result, I now have a terrible new disease - it’s called plastic-bag-itis. Now, I like to think I do my bit for the environment as much as the next person, and at home I really did try to re-use plastic bags instead of buying them. In fact, I welcomed the charge on plastic bags when it was introduced. But, all is now lost they’re still FREE in Edinburgh! I just found myself saying ‘Yes, please’ to the inevitable question ‘Would you like a bag?’ When you’ve been up and down Princes Street as often as we were, that’s a lot of plastic bags. And, ahem, yes I did bring them home. All of them! Well, I couldn't just throw them out, that would be totally wrong. I plan to re-use them of course. I would think I probably have about 6 months worth now, safely stored in the garage, (inside another plastic bag). It’s going to be a difficult 4 years - as the Borg would say ‘Resistance is futile’ (a little nod to all you Star Trek fans out there). I’m going back to Edinburgh in a couple of weeks - help!

Road Traffic Collisions - Dos and Don’ts Have you been involved in a Road Traffic Collision recently? Do you know what to do when it happens? The law Society has produced advice as follows: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Call the emergency services if necessary – 999; Move away from damaged cars to somewhere safe; Call the Police if anyone is injured; Obtain registration numbers of the vehicles involved; Exchange information with other persons involved. (Names, addresses, telephone numbers, insurance information); 6. Get the names, addresses and telephone numbers of any witnesses; 7. Take pictures of the accident using a camera phone or digital camera; and 8. Call your Solicitor immediately. Don’t Settle Any Claim Without First Speaking to a Solicitor Campbell Stafford Solicitors having extensive experience in dealing with RTC claims and would advise you not to settle any claim without having first spoken to a solicitor. Campbell Stafford Solicitors are independent of any Insurance Company or Accident Management Company and will place your interests first. Don’t Settle Any Claim Early Some insurance companies have been known to contact the injured party shortly after an accident and making an offer to settle. In a recent case the responsible party’s Insurance Company offered our client £1000 by telephone but once we were involved our client ended up accepting £6500.00. We would not advise settling a claim until all medical evidence has been obtained and the proper legal procedures have begun. If liability is admitted then all your legal costs are paid for by the insurance company. Don’t Just Accept a Panel Solicitor There are many Accident Management Companies who will wish you to use their own panel solicitor. In another of our series of articles about our local environment, Helen Long writes about her observations of nature, right here in Carryduff Let me put in a few words in defence of nettles. I know they sting, and I know that we like to weed them out of our carefully-tended flower-beds. That’s fine, but if you happen to have a rough area in your garden, perhaps I might persuade you to let the nettles grow unimpeded: ideally the bigger the area the better. You see, nettles are vital host plants to a variety of insects, the most beautiful probably being the Peacock Butterfly. Have you ever studied this butterfly closely? If not, it would certainly reward careful inspection. They are magnificently marked, with the distinctive round patterns near the wing tips giving them the name, due to their resemblance to the peacock’s brightly coloured tail. I took this photo of one in my garden a few years ago. The thing about the Peacock butterfly is that it will only lay its eggs on nettles, which become the sole food source of the caterpillars when they hatch out. Hence the importance of nettles. The eggs are cocooned in a web strung between the leaves, and when the young hatch out they quickly nibble their way through their rich banquet of nettle leaves. In the first photo below, taken this summer, you can just make out the remains of the web to the right. Sadly, they did not survive, as the Council, in their tidy and efficient way, inadvertently trimmed the bank where the nettles grew, in Carryduff Park. However, the ones in the second frame (far right) were on a great stand of nettles along the margin of the river in the same park. Full marks to the Council for leaving these alone; and indeed for all the Buddleias they have planted, providing nectar for so many adult butterflies and bees! When the caterpillars have eaten their fill of nettles and put on enough weight, they hide themselves away and form a chrysalis, inside which they hibernate. Then, by one of the great miracles of nature, they emerge, after an enormous metamorphosis, to fly away on their spectacular and magnificent wings. And all thanks to a clump of nettles! By the way, leaving Carryduff for a moment, the RSPB are engaged in a nettle-planting campaign on Rathlin Island, for the sole purpose of providing cover for the Corncrake, which they hope to attract back after its extinction in Ulster. So, if you have some nettles that you simply must get rid of, simply contact the RSPB office in Belvoir Park (tel 028 9049 1547), and they will take it from there! And the Corncrake will thank you for your services to its cause!

Focus on Movies

By Peter Stevenson

AT THE CINEMA: The Call 15, (94 mins) Whom do you call when an emergency situation becomes insurmountable (Hint: it’s not ‘Ghostbusters’)? It’s Halle Berry, apparently. In The Call Ms Berry plays Jordan Turner, a 911 emergency operator who, plagued by guilt that her inability to help a distressed caller resulted in her grisly murder, redoubles her efforts to help another teenage girl who calls when the killer strikes again. The first thing to note is yes, there are some plot holes (why the kidnapper does not confiscate his victim’s mobile phone is the most jarring), but most are small and forgivable. However, what it boils down to is a tired game of cat-and-mouse (think Speed, Panic Room, or the much imitated The Silence of the Lambs). Berry is, in the end, a lone female, pitted against a violent sociopath, intent on bringing about suffering due to his own Freudian issues. What could save this movie from being one long 94 minute cliché is the acting. This task falls to the triumvirate of Berry, Abigail Breslin (as victim Casey Welson) and Michael Eklund (as kidnapper Michael Foster). The latter stars are given one-dimensional character roles and they add nothing to them. Any opportunity to develop these characters is missed, leaving them easily forgotten. Berry is slightly better, but where is the Oscar winner from Monster’s Ball? (Probably consumed by X-Men mythology.) Director Brad Anderson creates a clunky movie, too interested in stark visual juxtapositions to be a flowing, cohesive film. Hair-splitting aside however, it is a tense thriller in which you will be thoroughly engrossed, even if it is only for an hour-and-a-half. 3 / 5

On DVD: Our Idiot Brother 12 (90 mins) If this movie is to be believed, all that is required for the definition of an idiot is a cash-flow problem and the wish to live on a farm (I would say that most of us have been at least half-way there!). Enter Ned (Paul Rudd), the lovable rogue in his ultra-hip, urbane family. Being released from prison early (after unwittingly selling marijuana to a police officer), Ned stays with each of his three sisters, whom he aggravates consistently with his straightforward and honest manner. Rudd himself is charming and understated in this role. His natural nonchalance emanates, making his casting ideal. However, it is nothing we have not seen before from Rudd. He is very much in his comfort zone here and the movie as a whole is, ironically, worse off as a result. If only he’d pushed the boundaries… His sisters, ably played by Elizabeth Banks (Role Models), Zooey Deschanel (Failure to Launch) and Emily Mortimer (Scream 3) contrast well with Rudd’s easy-going layabout as they are all severely uptight and each is under immense pressure for different reasons. It is for the audience to decide if Ned is an ever-present thorn in his sisters’ sides or vice versa. Either way, familial bonds shine through, showing themselves to be strong enough to weather these particular storms. Director Jesse Peretz (also one of the writers) creates tension and discomfort amongst the family unit in a believable fashion. Peretz also shows the changed harmonious family in a credulous light. It is the transition where he fails, however. Change seems forced and acceptance laboured as we move swiftly to the inevitable ‘happy ending’. Don’t expect a sequel, I’m not. 3 / 5 38

CARRYDUFF NEIGHBOURHOOD POLICING TEAM Halloween Message Most people enjoy the festivities at Halloween, however 'trick or treating', bonfires, fireworks and sparklers aren't always fun. Unfortunately these festivities also bring with them serious injuries, criminal damage to property and annoyance to some members of the community. In previous years during the run up to Halloween reports of criminal damage and youths causing annoyance have increased. This year high visibility police patrols will be placed in identified hotspot areas to prevent the crimes occurring. Anyone caught breaking the law will be dealt with robustly. The following safety advice will make Halloween a safe but enjoyable time for everyone.

         

Fireworks require a licence - except indoor fireworks and sparklers. It is illegal to possess, purchase, sell, handle or use fireworks except under licence. Only adults should light or handle fireworks. Never ever go back to a firework once lit - even if it does not go off. When watching fireworks, stand well back. It is an offence to throw fireworks in the street or other public places. Always supervise children around fireworks. Never give sparklers to children under the age of five. Light sparklers one at time and always wear gloves. Keep a bucket of water close by and put sparklers in it when they go out.

You can be fined up to £5,000 for breaking the law in relation to fireworks. Police recommend that fireworks should be purchased from reputable licensed dealers, not from market stalls or individuals selling door-to-door. If you have information about illegal fireworks sales contact your local police station. These fireworks may not be British Standard approved and could be extremely dangerous. The message is simple - enjoy Halloween, but be sensible and don’t break the law. Please mention the Carryduff Focus Magazine when contacting advertisers

The Crystal Ball

St Joseph’s Primary School

The Pretty ‘n’ Pink Gala Ball is back with a bang! The Gala Ball is the key fundraising event of the Pretty ‘n’ Pink calendar year, taking place during breast cancer awareness month.

The children in Primary Two enjoyed bringing in the harvest in September. They had planted lots of vegetables in the P1 Sensory Garden before the summer holidays. They even brought the fruits (and vegetables) of their labour home to cook for their dinner. Yummy!

Hosted by Citybeat’s Stephen Clements, The 2013 Crystal Ball will take place on Saturday 12th October... and Pretty ‘n’ Pink invite you to join them for a Magical Evening of Fantasy and Fun. Guests at the black tie event will enjoy a delicious Swedish natural fruit cider by drinks reception sponsor älska cider in the opulent surroundings of The Great Hall before feasting on a sumptuous three course meal in the famous Sir William Whitla Hall, Queens University Belfast. Entertainment on offer includes close up magician Rodd Hogg, and live music by the Jukebox Jurors. Tickets to this event cost £60 per person, £600 for a table of 10 and are limited. It is advisable to book asap as previous years have sold out extremely quickly. Funds raised from the gala event will be used to provide small grants to breast cancer patients and their families across Northern Ireland to help with practical requirements such as mortgage payments, travel expenses, home heating, much needed respite breaks, and any specific requests that an individual patient may have. For further information, or to book please contact Noeleen McErlane on 02890 890342 / 02890 517043, email prettynpinkni@hotmail.co.uk, or visit our website at www.prettynpink.org

School Council Speak Up! In order to write the school Development Plan, Mr Donnelly thought it would be a good idea to consult the pupils. Mrs. Early talked to the School Council about all aspects of life at St. Joseph’s. There was a lot of open, honest, lively discussion as the Council put forward their views. The next step in the process will be for all the children to complete the “Pupil Questionnaire.” This important information will be analysed and used to help in the future development of our school.

This year we have had a complete upgrade to our C2K computer system. ICT is used throughout the school and everyone is delighted with this quicker system which will help in all areas of the curriculum.
