Welcome to the September issue of the Carryduff Focus I hope you’ve all had a lovely Summer; now it’s back to work and back to school. Usually the September issue is the biggest of the year, and this year is no exception. I’ve been flat out over the last couple of weeks getting this issue ready - hope you enjoy it. One of the articles this month asks ‘Have you got the baking bug?’ and I can confirm it’s hit our house. While my daughter was home from University, we’ve been entertaining ourselves by baking. Perhaps I should say ‘by trying to bake’ The results have been hilarious - there was the cake that looked like a perfect volcano, the Victoria sandwich that sank in the middle (leaving a huge crater for extra strawberry jam (homemade of course!)) and the soda bread scones that had to be baked in muffin cases just to keep the dough in the one spot! Thank goodness the family aren't as critical as Paul and Mary from Bake Off, our attempts were still scoffed in record time. Now my daughter is back in Edinburgh baking for her flat mates. Earlier this week they walked to the top of Arthur’s Seat, taking a picnic with them - containing life’s essential food groups - sandwiches and cake! Until next time....

Focus on Movies

By Peter Stevenson

AT THE CINEMA: Planes 2 - Fire & Rescue U (84 mins) Tired of living vicariously through their highly successful partnership with Pixar, Disney’s Animation Studios make another attempt to make their presence felt in the world of digital animation. Unfortunately for them, the impact made by Planes 2 packs less punch than one would expect from a titan of animation like Disney. Plot-wise it is extremely simple; Dusty Crophopper (Dane Cook) is forced to retire from his career in racing due to a mechanical problem and is re -assigned to the forest firefighters. Will he be able to adjust to his new life, overcome the new obstacles he must tackle, and learn what it really means to be a hero? Average is probably the best way to describe this film; there is nothing wrong with it, it is just nice. The animation is pretty, but not spectacular (the vehicles line-dancing will pull your face into a grinning position, however), the story is uninspired, dull even, while the dialogue, though light-hearted, is never hilarious and rarely tugs at the heart strings. It is difficult to fault the cast who include, alongside Cook: Ed Harris, Regina King, Teri Hatcher and Patrick Warburton, so the vocal talent is there but, if nothing else, this film proves that star-power is all well and good, but it is worth nothing without a decent script to back it up. Director Roberts Gannaway appears to be stuck in second-gear, never giving full throttle or really letting rip when opportunities present themselves and the movie is poorer as a result. As an audience, we need to feel some heart; to really care about these planes but we just don’t. Let’s hope this is the only sequel in the pipeline! 2 / 5

On DVD: The Legend of Hercules 12A (99 mins) 300 has such a lot to answer for; never mind plot, character, dialogue, even historical accuracy, just get some buff guys to walk around shirtless and a movie is born. Hercules has never been a flatter character. In this ‘epic’, the muscle-bound demi-god (Kellan Lutz) (why he is a demi-god is barely touched upon) is betrayed by his stepfather, King Amphitryon (Scott Adkins), and sold into slavery because of his forbidden love for Hebe (Gaia Weiss). Cue a seemingly never-ending string of battles and gladiatorial duals. Lutz proves unable to bring life to a character who has been around for aeons. His overall indifference to the role leaves the audience both uninterested and disinterested in the flimsy plot. He is bland, dull and fails to build on his character in the few opportunities given by the script. Amphitryon is probably the character which has the most potential to beguile audience members; his smouldering menace lurks around corners, waiting to pounce like a particularly fierce lioness on the hunt. Disappointingly however, this is never realised, thanks largely to the rather insipid Adkins, but perhaps Hercules’ love-interest can save the day? NO! Completing this trifecta of beige is Gaia Weiss. It is never quite clear what Hercules finds so enticing about Hebe beyond her prettiness. Director Renny Harlin has, I’m afraid, bitten off more than he can chew with this picture. Although the action is plentiful (these are the only good bits), it is muddled and overbearing and one must work to connect it to the plot. It wants so badly to be an epic, a picture for the ages, what we get though is Hercules for Dummies. 2 / 5 42

Moneyrea Primary School Sports Day June 2014 Alan Ewing’s Spar store in Carryduff has sponsored Moneyrea primary’s annual Sports Day, which took place on Tuesday 24th June, with a host of budding young athletes, of all ages, from throughout the school taking part. All the ingredients for a great sports day were there; with the local SPAR store providing fantastic branded banners, finishing tape and medals. The rain managed to hold off, eggs were primed and ready to sit on spoons and all the kids were fired up to give it their best! No Sports Day would be complete without some refreshments and fruit, which were also provided by Spar Carryduff and the day proved to be a huge success. Local retailer Alan Ewing commented: “As a local business in the heart of the community here in Carryduff & Moneyrea, we at Spar Carryduff were delighted to sponsor Moneyrea Primary’s annual sports day for the fifth year running.” Spar is a strong believer in encouraging healthy lifestyles and providing good quality products to create a balanced diet. Spar also encourages exercise which is essential for a healthy lifestyle. This is reflected in our sponsorship of School Sports Days right around the country in our local communities. It was great to see so many school children getting involved. Alan Ewing’s Spar store in Carryduff has also sponsored Carryduff Primary School and Carryduff Playgroup’s annual Sports Day, which took place this year on 3rd & 4th June.

‘Cinderella & Rockerfella’ rocked St Joseph’s The Primary Sevens know how to put on a show! A packed audience of parents, brothers and sisters, grandparents, childminders and adoring fans gathered in the school hall to enjoy our end of term performance of ‘Cinderella and Rockerfella’. Lots of talent was on show – dancing, singing, joke telling and acting. We are truly blessed by the talented Primary Sevens. A real night to remember! The P3 pupils dazzled us all with a fabulous performance of French rhymes, songs, role play and music. The parents,

grandparents, child minders and friends who gathered were all amazed at just how much French the P3 pupils know! It was great fun to watch and a lovely way to end off the final school term.

St Joseph’s Primary School Congratulations to last year’s Boys’ Primary Seven Gaelic team who won the Bredagh Blitz at Cherryvale. They were unbeaten on the day – and triumphed over stiff competition from St Michael’s and St Ita’s. Well Done boys – we are proud of you. 48

St Ita’s Win the Cregagh Cross Community Cup

The Primary 6 boys’ soccer team won a dramatic penalty shootout to lift the Cregagh Cross Community Cup for the first time. The 5-a-side tournament was held at Cregagh Community Centre. St Ita’s won all of their games in the league format to qualify for the final. In a very competitive final, St Ita’s went 1-0 down. The boys worked hard to get an equaliser and finally were successful when Rory slotted one home in the final minute of the game. A penalty shootout was then required to separate the teams. Both teams scored all their penalties and so it came down to sudden death. Ronan stepped up to score the first sudden death penalty. Cregagh’s penalty struck the bar Need help handing victory to St Ita’s. with food, It was a thrilling end to a wonderful tournament. The Mayor of Castlereagh & Lisburn presented the trophy and medals to the winning team. Let’s hope we can retain the title next year.
