Hello again everyone, We love a good cafe. It’s a standing joke in our house whenever we hear about someone’s holiday or a new place to visit, we always ask ‘Any nice cafes?’ The husband would love to develop a real taste for cafe culture but there’s that pesky thing called work that keeps getting in the way. He’s counting down to retirement (it’s years away yet, lol!) and I know visits to places with cafes are top of his agenda. (Top of my agenda is a trip to the Caribbean, but a girl can only dream). We found a few new cafes this Summer. One of the best was the Gelateria and Pasticceria we found on the last day of our holiday in Lucca, Italy which had exquisite pastries and amazing ice-cream. Enjoy whatever you get up to this Autumn. I’ll be hoping for some crisp Autumn sunshine - perfect cafe-hunting weather. Until next time!

The best solutions for students and schoolwork
It’s that time of year again: schools, colleges and universities are readying for a new term and parents are running around trying to get everything their children need. Increasingly that includes technology, whether that’s a basic laptop for younger children’s homework or an all-rounder for studying, social media and streaming video at home or in student accommodation. It’s worth thinking about streaming video if your children are staying away from home, because you can get almost all the TV you want for free, entirely legally, via the internet and most 1 catch-up TV apps (BBC Iplayer does need a licence). There’s no need for a pricey Sky or Virgin contract, just a decent broadband service. If video is going to be a key thing, make sure whatever you buy has a good-sized screen or buy a Chromecast, which enables you to stream video from your computer to a TV. The best allrounder is a Windows 10 laptop, and you’ll find lots of really good bargains from the likes of Dell, Lenovo, HP, Acer and Asus around the £400 mark. There’s another option: tablets such as the 2 iPad. Previously we’ve said they aren’t really ideal for serious work but that’s changed with the arrival of the iPad Pro, which is a genuine alternative to a powerful laptop. It’s pricey though (from £619) with another £159 for a keyboard cover or £99 for the Apple Pencil (£99). In the unlikely event that your child doesn’t already

have a phone, give Apple a miss unless you’re really fond of their products or don’t care about the cost: Lenovo’s P2 and the Moto G5 are both brilliant Android smartphones and cost less than £150 SIM-free. And if they need an e-reader, Amazon’s all-conquering Kindle 3 remains the one to get - but you don’t need to buy the top -end Kindle Voyage (£169): the basic Kindle (£59.99) does the job perfectly well. It’s worth checking your insurance policies too, especially if your children will be moving out for college or university. Your home insurance might already cover your children’s gadgets when they’re away from home, but don’t assume that’s the case - and if they do, check the excesses, which might be higher than the cost of repairing or replacing a gadget. The same applies to any contents insurance you may take out for your children’s accommodation. Lots of companies have insurance policies specifically designed for students’ computers and smartphones, and sites such as money.co.uk enable you to compare the cover, cost and excesses quickly. We’d particularly recommend insurance that covers you for accidental damage: if something can be dropped, smashed or accidentally covered in liquid, it probably will be. Main Image- iPad Pro 10.5” £619. 1. Google Chromecast £30-£69. 2. Dell Dimension laptop £369. 3. Lenovo P2, around £300.

New brands, new products, new looks... Lighter, summery shades of lipsticks tend to give way to warmer, deeper hues as the weather gets colder. This autumn, we’ll be seeing two extremes when it comes to lip colours – ‘barely there’ and deep berry shades. Clarins have brought out three new shades of their bestselling Joli Rouge lipstick – Deep Red, Litchi and Guava. Brighter shades can be difficult to carry off, but these three are surprisingly wearable. They’re also formulated with mango oil and other moisturisers, to leave your lips feeling softer and more hydrated. £20, www.clarins.co.uk. Autumn might be just around the corner, but that’s no reason to ditch the sunscreen. As
well as helping to reduce the risk of skin cancer, protecting your skin also helps to prevent visible damage, including pigmentation and wrinkles. If time is an issue, you’ll love Origins’ Ginzing SPF40 Energy Boosting Tinted Moisturiser. Suitable for all skin types, it protects, moisturises and conceals in one go. Personally, I love it – the colour is very natural, it’s easy to apply, and it doesn’t feel too heavy. £30, www.origins.co.uk. Crabtree & Evelyn have brought out a new range of body care products to complement their flower water perfumes. Choose from Florentine Freesia, Venetian Violet and Old World Jasmine. Each fragrance is available in a hand cream, body lotion, body cream, bath & shower gel and flower water. Old World Jasmine is a personal favourite, with its subtle fragrance of white jasmine, orange, lemon and spring flowers. Try the Old World Jasmine bath & shower gel, which features skin-loving ingredients such as moringa, evening primrose and rosehip oils. £18, www.crabtreeevelyn.co.uk. New to our shores, Angel En Provence is an organic hair care brand that focuses on natural ingredients. The fine hair range, for example, includes extracts of lavender, grapefruit and ginger, as well as rosemary leaf oil and sage oil. Together, they help to give extra body to limp locks and reduce hair loss. There are ranges to suit most hair types, so whether you want some extra bounce to your curls, or need to control excess oil, you’ll find products to help. See www.mrventuresstore.co.uk. If you love natural skincare, you’ll want to check out Beauty Kitchen. This British beauty brand is 100% natural, cruelty free, and great value for money. Is your skin feeling a bit dry after the summer? Try the Inspire Me Brightening & Toning Body Polish (£14.99). It gently exfoliates away dead skin cells, and leaves skin feeling more nourished. It also smells good enough to eat. Or if you want a treat that costs less than a sandwich, the Inspire Me Triple Action Body Mist is just £2.99 for a handbag-friendly bottle. It’s fragranced with essential oils, and helps to hydrate skin and refresh your senses. See www.hollandandbarrett.com.

The UN founded World Space Week in 1999 to celebrate “the contributions of space science and technology to the betterment of the human condition.” It’s now the largest space event in the world, with 86 countries holding 2,700 events last year. This year’s theme is ‘Exploring New Worlds in Space’, and here we look at three major projects the Week will highlight. New Horizons: Pushing the Boundaries The New Horizons spacecraft was launched on 19th January 2006, beginning NASA’s first mission to reconnoitre Pluto and venture into the distant Kuiper Belt.
It conducted a sixmonth-long reconnaissance of the dwarf planet Pluto and its moons in summer 2015. With NASA approval, the spacecraft will head further into the vast Kuiper Belt, where it will study another of the ancient, tiny worlds, over a billion miles beyond Neptune’s orbit. The mission will provide information about the surface properties, geology, interior makeup and atmospheres of these bodies and how ‘ice dwarfs’, like Pluto and its largest moon, Charon, evolved. It may also tell us more about four previously unknown moons of Pluto - Nix, Hydra, Styx and Kerberos – which were discovered using the Hubble Telescope.
exploration. Orion is intended to transport up to six astronauts to destinations beyond low Earth orbit, such as asteroids, the moon and eventually Mars, and return them safely to Earth. It can withstand re-entry speeds of over 20,000 miles per hour. It will enable NASA to extend sustainable, affordable human and robotic exploration across the solar system, developing innovative technology and infrastructure to take space exploration even farther. Space X: Planning for Our Move to Mars
Founded in 2002 by Elon Musk, The Orion: Human SpaceX designs, manufactures and -Rated Deep launches advanced rockets and Space Exploration spacecraft “with the ultimate goal Lockheed Martin of enabling people to live on other is the prime planets.” contractor building the Orion In 2010, it became the only private company ever to return a Multi-Purpose spacecraft from low-Earth orbit, Crew Vehicle and in 2012 made history again NASA’s first spacecraft for long when its Dragon spacecraft took cargo to and from the International -duration, humanrated deep space Space Station. It now runs regular NASA resupply missions and will

SpaceX is currently developing the Falcon Heavy, the world’s most powerful rocket, and working on fully and rapidly reusable rockets, which will make space exploration more affordable and reliable. This year it successfully achieved the first reflight of an orbital class rocket. Planetary Resources: Unlocking the Solar System’s Economy The vision of Planetary Resources is “to expand the economy into space.” The company focuses on developing technology to mine near-Earth X-type asteroids (rich in precious metals) and extract water from C-type asteroids.
They’re developing prospector craft capable of surveying asteroids for prolonged periods and then impacting or landing on them to take measurements. The Arkyd 3 deployed into lowEarth orbit from the ISS in July 2015 and successfully tested its core prospecting capabilities. Arkyd 6 is scheduled to launch this year. Before mining precious metals, Planetary Resources intends to produce fuel in space from water-rich carbonaceous chondrites that can be broken down into highly efficient LOX/H2 rocket fuel. Keeping Your Pets Safe at Hallowe’en Hallowe’en can be a frightening and anxious time for pets, and it’s important to spare a thought for their safety. Keeping them safe and feeling secure is paramount during this time, so what can you do to help your pet deal with the sights and sounds of Fireworks? Calming tablets Your vet will be able to recommend various types of calming tablet that gently reduce anxiety and the
trauma often suffered by pets. Flashing lights and loud noises create fear, which can sometimes lead to aggression in a normally non-aggressive dog. ‘Noise’ CDs These are CDs that play noises similar to those heard on Hallowe’en, and can gently acclimatise your pet to the unusual sounds. Played at a low level during October, it can help your pet to cope better on the night.
1 Sheets + Overs LOC115652 BT8 Magazine Sig 3 Back
Blocking out the noise Make sure you draw your curtains and turn up the volume on the TV or radio to drown out the sound of fireworks. Close your doors and windows, not forgetting the cat flap
if you have one. A safe den Provide a ‘den’ where your pet will feel more secure, giving them their comfort blanket or toy, or even an old piece of your clothing to help ease the anxiety. Keeping your pet indoors will ensure their safety, but if you do need to take them outside make sure they are wearing a collar and tag. www.bluecross.org.uk/pet-advice/ fireworks-and-pets www.thekennelclub.org.uk/ourresources/kennel-club-campaigns/ fireworks By Ann Haldon
How To Keep An Eye On Your Rabbit’s Health It’s important to regularly check your rabbit for signs of illness, as it’s not always obvious when they’re unwell. One of the best ways to do this is to wrap them in a towel to stop them moving around while you check the following: Eyes Eyes should be bright, clear and dry. If they’re runny it could be a sign of dental problems, a scratch on
the eye, or possibly in-growing eyelashes. Nose and mouth The nose should be dry and clean. Check that your rabbit’s front teeth aren’t chipped or broken by holding their head with one hand, and gently lifting their lip with the other. Ears There should be no redness, dirt, wax or discharge in your rabbit’s ears. You may need to sit in a good light or shine a torch when checking their ears, as it can be difficult to see potential problems in this area. Feet You’re checking for any abrasions, inflammation, or buildup of dirt in their paws, and also that the heels of their back feet
28
are not sore. The best way to check the feet is to hold your rabbit with their back against you. Bottom It’s crucial to check their bottom is clean as flystrike is a serious threat to rabbits during the warmer months of summer and early autumn. You may need to bathe their bottom regularly for this reason. Skin Rub your hand against the direction of their fur - skin should be free of lumps, abrasions, and inflammation.

Lamb Koftas with Minted Couscous
FOR THE KOFTAS •
350g lean minced lamb ½ red onion, finely chopped
•
1 garlic clove, crushed
•
2tsp ground coriander
•
2tsp ground cumin
•
1tsp smoked paprika
•
2tbsp fresh chopped coriander
•
Squeeze of lemon juice
FOR THE COUSCOUS •
225g couscous
•
3tbsp olive oil
•
1tbsp lemon juice
•
¼ cucumber, finely diced
•
4 spring onions, trimmed and finely chopped
•
3tbsp fresh chopped mint
•
4 tomatoes, cut into chunks
•
Lemon wedges and mint sprigs to garnish
To make the koftas, place the mince, onion, garlic, spices, fresh coriander and lemon juice in a food processor. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper, then process until very finely minced. Divide the mixture into 12 and using clean damp hands, shape each into an oval. Push each oval onto the end of a long wooden skewer (see tip) and place on a foil-lined grill pan. Cook under a preheated medium grill for 8-10 minutes, turning frequently, until browned and cooked through. Meanwhile, make the couscous. Place the couscous in a heatproof bowl and pour over 250ml boiling water. Cover and leave to soak for about 10 minutes, until all the water has been absorbed. Fluff the couscous with a fork and stir in the olive oil, lemon juice, cucumber, spring onions and mint. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve the koftas with the couscous and tomatoes, garnished with lemon wedges and mint sprigs. Soak the wooden skewers in cold water for about 20 minutes to prevent the ends burning under the grill.

Weight Loss Pills Guess how many results you’ll get from typing “weight loss tablets” in the search box of a major online retailer. Over 3,000. Big business. But the million-dollar question is whether they will actually help you to lose weight? Weight loss supplements often contain one or more of the following ingredients: conjugated linoleic acid (CLA); garcinia cambogia, glucomannan, green coffee bean extract, green tea extract or raspberry ketones. A bit if research reveals claims that these will to do anything from reducing appetite, boost metabolism, or breakdown body fat. Then there are ‘fat binders’ or ‘carbohydrate binders’, which reduce your absorption of fat or carbohydrate. All sounds very promising. Legally, all supplements need to include a variation of the statement that “food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied diet”. But that will be in the small print. When front of pack has the words “weight loss capsules”, “control your hunger” or “supports weight loss”, the seduction to purchase is complete. But exactly how much weight might you expect to lose? Studies on weight loss for most socalled weight loss supplements show mixed results – from no difference, to weight loss of a few lbs only. And then there’s the cost. Many are in the price range of £20-£30 for a month’s supply. Others cost under £10 for a month’s supply, with fat binders being the most expensive at up to £60 for a month’s supply. You would definitely need to see a result for these prices. There will be no money back guarantees. If you are thinking of purchasing a weight loss supplement, the best evidence exists for glucomannan (which promotes fullness) and fat binders (which reduce absorption of fat from food). But, like any medication, you’ll only see a result if the tablet specifically deals with your problem. For example, if high fat intake is not a contributor to your weight problem, then using a fat binder is not the solution. Using products randomly with great expectation may not produce any weight loss. Overall, for any given supplement, weight loss effects are small, monthly costs can be high, and none are without the risk of side effects. See www.katemcculla.com/blog for a fuller review of popular products. There’s no doubt you could spend a lot of £’s, but don’t get your hopes up about losing a lot of lbs. General advice is never a substitute for a professional opinion.

Bogus Callers Before opening your front door to any caller, make sure your back door and any accessible windows are secure. Put your door chain on. (If you don’t have one we recommend you get one). If the person claims to represent a business or organisation, ask them for ID and check it carefully (still with the door chain on). Genuine tradesmen should carry a photographic identification card and won't mind showing it to you. The QUICK CHECK scheme can be used to check the identity of callers. Call Freephone 0800 013 22 90 and an operator can quickly check with a range of service providers that the person at the door is a genuine representative.

CONNECT COFFEE AND CHAT On Wednesday and Thursday mornings Connect provides a welcoming space for local residents to come together for tea/coffee and chat. Many who pop in are folk who live alone & value the opportunity to meet & share lively conversation and for some a competitive game of pool. Connect guests can enjoy light refreshments free of charge in line with the ethos of friendship and hospitality freely offered. Volunteers are continually amazed by the generous gifts of scones & biscuits which never run short. Birthdays are marked with cake, candles and cards and as numbers grow this happens on an almost weekly basis. Christmas and Easter cards are also distributed. Since moving out of its Shopping centre location in March 2016, Connect has marked its first Birthday in the Foyer of the Presbyterian Church Halls and has expanded to open up on Wednesday mornings in Carryduff Baptist Church. This clearly proves that there is a strong need for churches to work together to meet the needs of local people. We meet on Wednesdays in Carryduff Baptist Church 10.00am-12.30am (excluding 3rd Wednesday of each month). Every Thursday 10am to 12.30pm in the Foyer of Carryduff Presbyterian Church Halls. Everyone welcome. Please mention the BT8 Focus Magazine when contacting advertisers
