Publisher’s POST Ever since summer arrived on June 20, my senses have come alive; the sun is shining brighter, birds are singing louder, and mysteriously, it smells like barbecue on every corner. How could anyone complain (especially about the last one)?

I'm happy to announce there's no time for boredom this summer – we have so many awesome local and/or outdoor events to keep you blissfully busy all season. With everything from parades and fireworks to corn hole and concerts, there is no shortage of fun (or sun) to be had.

To prep for our cover story, I met Cathi Huff at Atlantis Dream Farm to learn what's goat-ing on over there. Read about it on page 14 – you won't be disappointed! Spoiler alert– on page 27, you'll find a special summer section courtesy of Laurel & May Market – learn how to journal, throw an awesome party and make iced coffee from home! Who knew it could be that simple? In other news, Milton recently welcomed Matilda's Music Under The Pines to Birmingham Crossroads. I had the pleasure of interviewing the owner, Mary Potter, who embodies the wisdom, "Grow where you are planted."

Summer 2019
While reading the last Milton and its tagline of “30004 life,” this got me thinking—what’s 30004 life mean to me? Living here since 1994, long before Milton officially became a city, it’s always been a place to come home to—our family’s rural oasis among the suburban hustle and bustle. We own land, horses and chickens, and we’ve even had donkeys and a llama. But, as I reflect on my three terms as Milton’s mayor, I realize that 30004 life means that, plus so much more. We now have a developing downtown to call our own and our commercial corridors are evolving. We’ve sadly lost some of our commercial horse farms, but we’ve seen an increased interest in recreational horse ownership. There’s been continued success for local nonprofit Special Equestrians of Georgia, and we have a new agritourism business with the opening of Goga, yoga with goats on a Milton farm. Milton restaurants are thriving, with the owners of The Union opening a new restaurant, 7 Acre BarnGrill, in the historic Buice Store at the Birmingham Crossroads, and the owners of Olde Blind Dog opening Duke’s Bar and Grill in downtown Milton. And it’s not just local businesses—Milton’s Deerfield district saw the opening of the first-of-its-kind Pike’s Nursery, a national nursery chain, on GA Highway 9, and just down the road, property owners are working on a redevelopment plan for the commercial space between Kohl’s and Target. So, you see, with time comes change, but the one constant Milton life offers is incredibly warm and giving residents who embrace our rural character and regularly share their time and talents to benefit their community. Mayor Joe Lockwood

Don’t Regret the Biggest Purchase You May Ever Make
F
By Sherry Ajluni
Finding your dream home is as easy as pulling out your mobile device and searching one of many online real estate sites. If you can search yourself, there really isn’t a good reason to use a real estate agent, right? A recent survey by Bankrate found that 79 percent of Americans still see buying a home as a hallmark of the American dream. However, that same survey found that nearly half of all homeowners have buyer’s remorse. Among millennials, that number jumps to 63 percent. What is the source of this regret? Nearly 20 percent of all homeowners say hidden costs and unexpected maintenance is the primary reason. Other reasons cited were bad location, high mortgage payments, and buying the wrong size house. A seasoned buyer’s agent can help you avoid these common pitfalls. Best of all, a buyer’s agent’s services are FREE to the buyer. And, your agent has a fiduciary duty to look out for your best interest. Why does that matter? The selling agent only has one goal: to sell her listing. You need an advocate to help you understand the potential drawbacks of a particular home, neighborhood, or area – one who will be a tough negotiator on your behalf from the initial offer through the inspection phase.
While you’re on the hunt, falling madly in love with a house, your agent will stay focused on the facts to make sure you don’t overpay. She’s also going to know what influences the sale of a house and will keep resale in mind. After all, if she’s been doing this awhile, your agent knows this probably isn’t your forever home, even if you don’t. Same goes for new construction. Take your agent along so that you don’t pay too much for upgrades, make the wrong selections, or settle for a bad lot. Another reason to have an agent on your side is the relationships she brings to the table. Maybe your finances aren’t ideal. A good agent has a network of mortgage brokers and will know the right one for your particular circumstances. Bottom line, buying a home is likeley the largest single purchase you will ever make. It’s a long-term commitment of your time, resources, and money. Don’t set yourself up for buyer’s remorse. Call an experienced buyer’s agent. You won’t regret it. Sherry Ajluni, Team Leader, Sherry & Co., has been a licensed real estate agent since 2005. She started her real estate team 12 years ago to serve the north Atlanta suburbs. It includes seven full-time agents and three full-time staff. Give them a call at 678-744-8206.

Atlantis Dream Farm
Love GOGA

Bronx
L
"love at first sight" is how Cathi Huff described first meeting Bronx – a retired thoroughbred racehorse originally named “Atlantis Dream," the namesake of her farm in Milton. Cathi purchased Bronx after deciding to take up horseback riding at age fifty. In a serendipitous twist of fate, as her husband retired and the kids went off to college, her “nest” seemed to only grow fuller. Cathi immediately sought companions for Bronx, and she soon welcomed two goats, Clara and Annabelle. As her love for these animals grew, so did the Atlantis Dream family. Today, in addition to Bronx, the farm is home to chickens, pigs, sheep, mini-horses, barn cats, two Rhodesian Ridgebacks, a donkey and lots of happy goats. As a certified yoga instructor, Reiki practitioner and holistic health and wellness coach (among other things), Cathi has long felt called to help others strengthen their fitness of body and mind. Naturally, goat yoga seemed like the obvious next step. On April 10, 2017, Cathi established “Love GOGA” as a local business serving both new and experienced yogis ages 10 and up. This allowed Cathi to combine her unique skillset with her "slice of paradise."
Andrea Linn Photography During GOGA sessions, participants are invited to "relax and renew their mind, body and spirit," surrounded by goats in a lush green and therapeutic environment. Tuesday group classes include 45 minutes of invigorating yoga, followed by 15 minutes of walking through the farm, taking pictures and meeting animals. This coming fall, GOGA will host 4-week mindfulness workshops geared toward middle school-aged girls. Finding peace with oneself takes practice, so it's best to get an early start. It also helps to do so in a positive, relaxing environment such as the Atlantis Dream oasis. "Mindfulness is crucial to relishing the remarkable ride of life each and every day," according to Cathi. She finds it essential for a balanced life. "As an ambitious person with an innately fast-paced mindset, it has provided me with an opportunity to re-center my focus and maintain a sense of stillness, even in the midst of utter chaos."
The following month, Fox 5 News aired two morning segments at Atlantis Dream Farm, where reporter Paul Milliken tried GOGA out for himself (and got his pant leg chewed by a goat on live TV). Even more recently, GOGA was selected by Old Navy to be part of a national social media campaign. Cathi feels grateful and blessed to be able to share her dream with such a large audience. Mobile Vet Service | Mind The Farm Atlantis Dream Farm now offers professional services for local farm animal owners. Cathi recently teamed up with Dr. Stewart Colby of Windward Animal Hospital to develop Milton’s first-ever mobile veterinary business, a service long overdue in our equestrian-lover city. Dr. Colby will perform house (and farm) calls for exams, disease prevention, nutrition counseling, treatment and recommendations for referral. After the nature of the disease or injury is determined, Dr. Colby will take the proper measures to restore each animal to health. “Having personally struggled with the need for emergent farm animal treatment, I realized there is a scarcity of those providing the service,” Cathi explained. “Both [Dr. Colby and I] have a great passion for animals and we are excited to help fill the demand in servicing animal care to Milton and surrounding areas.” On July 10, Mayor Lockwood will pay a special visit to Atlantis Dream Farm for a private ribbon-cutting ceremony to announce the mobile vet service. Cathi soon plans to introduce another project of hers called “Mind the Farm,” a professional farm-sitting service for animals while their owners are away or in need. Prior to the start of each service, owners will have the opportunity for a meet-and-greet with their sitter for reassurance. She was again inspired by the challenge of finding knowledgeable individuals to care for her own farm, and transformed it with intention as a way to help others. "We never cease to look for new ways to get involved with the community," said Cathi. In April, GOGA showed support for local animal charities by acting as a vendor at Milton's Rock For Rescues festival. But more than anything else, her favorite way to get involved is through interactions with older adults. GOGA recently partnered with a number of senior living facilities in Milton, including the Phoenix and Village Park. "The manner in which the residents embrace the animals, and the joy they feel from this experience is remarkable."
GOGA Goes Wild Cathi has also partnered with the North Georgia Zoo and Farm, where yoga sessions will be held "in the wild" at their facilities, accompanied by a variety of animals – goats, alpacas, kangaroos, sloths, and flamingos. Refer to the calendar on page 7 for details. 16 | Milton Life

Cover Story
Love With Purpose Photography
Dolly The Donkey Finds Home To absolutely no surprise, Cathi's pursuits don't end there; she recently added "children's book author" to her résumé. All of the characters in "Dolly the Donkey Finds Home" are depictions of real animals on her farm. She and her dentist, Dr. Katie Reid, co-wrote the book together and Sarah Szymanski did the illustrations. It is based on the story of Dolly's arrival to Atlantis Dream Farm, where she bonded quickly with each of the animals – particularly Bronx. "The book itself revolves around Dolly and how she conquers her fears and not only befriends, but also helps the other animals in finding their inner courage," said Cathi. "I feel incredibly fulfilled in the ventures I have undertaken, and I am satisfied with the great passion that the farm has fostered in me. Each and every day I spend on the farm is a dream come true, as I get the opportunity to spend time with my animals and share the joy that this environment offers," Cathi said. She credits her success with Atlantis Dream Farm to the support of her family. "Without their support, I could never have done this." Mayor Lockwood will read "Dolly the Donkey Finds Home" at the Milton Library on July 15, and it will become available for purchase on August 1. INDEPENDENCE in Milton

A Crabapple Tradition Again this year, the City of Milton and the Crabapple Community Association have partnered to host the Annual Independence Day Walking Community Parade & Celebration on June 29 at Broadwell Pavilion (12615 Broadwell Rd). Parking will be available at Crabapple First Baptist Church and Crabapple Crossing Elementary. Bring your own decked-out "mini-floats," such as wagons, strollers, carts and bikes, as well as your pets (on a leash)! Led by the City of Milton Fire Department, the parade will depart at 10:30 a.m. At the end of procession, the CCA will award for the "Most Spirited Family," and prizes will be available for all ages.

Animals & Fireworks We love our animals in Milton, and they rely on us for care and protection. Horses, dogs and cats are prone to fear the "booms" and bright flashes of fireworks displays. Horses are especially vulnerable to panic, putting them at risk of serious injury or death. This year, the City of Milton encourages residents to stay mindful of their four-legged neighbors when celebrating, and to avoid flammable dry grass, hay and farm bedding. If your neighbors own horses, we recommend letting them know ahead of time if you plan on celebrating with fireworks. For more info, please visit www.cityofmiltonga.us for more tips on keeping our four-legged neighbors safe during the upcoming holiday.
FAST FIRECRACKER FACTS: • Sparklers can burn up to 2,000º F. • Fireworks start an avg. of 18,500 fires annually in the United States. • More than 1/3 of all firework-related injuries in the U.S. affect children.
LAWS & ORDINANCES On most days of the year, "it shall be unlawful for any person to create or assist in creating any loud and unreasonable noise in the city," according to the City of Milton [Ord. No. 1807-366]. However, the period of July 3 - 4 is an exception! On these days, fireworks are permitted after 10 a.m. and up to and including 11:59 p.m. After midnight, residents are urged to call 911 to report violations. In the state of Georgia, it is illegal to shoot fireworks within 100 yards of a gas station, hospital, nursing home or other health care facility; under the influence of alcohol or drugs; and within the limits of any park, historic site, recreational area or state property– including roads and highways. This Fourth of July, be sure to keep a water source nearby to extinguish rogue flames and to thoroughly soak all remnants before disposal. Have fun but, most of all, stay safe!

Water Safety PSA

knows how to hold her breath underwater, float and roll on her back if she finds herself in trouble. As you can see in the photo above, Josie has become quite the little guppy.
Melissa had a strange feeling in the pit of her stomach earlier that day, which she now thinks was her "mother's intuition" that something would go awry. During the party, she kept a sharp eye on Josie and checked on her every few minutes. No one was distracted or staring at their phones, but Josie had managed to slip by under their watch.
"We want everyone to know just how fast this happens," Melissa says. "In the amount of time it takes to ride an escalator from one floor of the mall to the next, a child can drown."
Melissa's husband, Tony, jumped in and scooped their daughter out, but no one at the party knew what to do but call 911. "We were holding our limp, gray and unconscious toddler with no idea how to save her. That's absolutely terrifying," she recalls. Thankfully, little Josie made it to the hospital in time and turned out just fine. Melissa says Josie has since "fallen in love with the very thing that was seconds from taking her." After taking swimming lessons, she
This kind of accident can happen to anyone, and even the best of parents aren't immune. When it comes to water, tragedy can strike in a matter of seconds. It's important to get certified in CPR and enroll your children in swim lessons. The latter can decrease the risk of drowning by up to 90 percent. Matilda's
MUSIC UNDER THE PINES
L
Last year, after nearly two decades of calling Alpharetta "home," Matilda's property on South Main Street was purchased by a developer. Saving the music venue became a top priority for co-owner Mary Jane Potter – letting it go was not an option. The future of Matilda's remained uncertain until the night of their final concert. Long-time patrons invited businessman Curtis Mills to see if he thought Matilda's would match his vision to develop an artistic community on his Milton property at Birmingham Crossroads. As a preservationist, artist, and businessman, Curtis was the perfect storm – and the idea of moving the venue was born. What they thought would be a quick and easy move of the “Hen House” from Alpharetta to Milton turned out to be rather complicated. After several months, a much larger-than-anticipated budget, and many hours of hard work, this “labor of love” soon came to fruition. Looking back, “It was kind of like childbirth," Mary said. "Now that it’s over, we are feeling relieved and happy about starting a new life in Milton.” Matilda’s is grateful for their many loyal patrons for their moral and financial support, as well as the 100% commitment from Curtis who did everything in his power to ensure their success. The Potters' new mission is to establish Matilda’s as an asset to the Milton community and remain an affordable, casual and unique live music venue for all ages to enjoy. Summer 2019
Photo: Amanda Gardner On May 3rd, Matilda’s opening night, a sold-out crowd of 250 people gathered to watch a performance by Farewell Angelina, an all-girl Nashville band that has been a staple at Matilda's – and Mary's personal favorite – for several years. "I can't imagine anyone else I would rather have christened the new venue,” Mary said. “It was a night to remember.” Matilda's has since put on two more sold-out concerts and they are delighted to see the familiar faces of their long-time fans who make the drive to Milton, and get to know a new batch of neighbors and live music lovers in Milton. “It is my hope that our music venue will be loved as much in Milton as it was in Alpharetta,” Mary said. However, she stays involved in both cities. This summer, she's producing the "Music at Twilight" concert series – six Friday night (8:30 – 10:30 p.m.) performances by singer-songwriters at the corner of Milton Ave. and North Main St. in Downtown Alpharetta. And of course, bring your family and friends to the new venue “under the Milton pines” for a genuine live music experience. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO TRULY be a locally-owned, family business? Few know better than Chris Sedgwick and Michele Sedgwick who for 25+ years have blessed Atlanta's northside communities with consistent and superior dining experiences. They take great pride in leading a team of talented, creative and committed individuals who bring personality, passion, great food and big smiles to the tables. Coming (very) Soon! 7 Acre BarNgrill - SRG's newest concept is slated to open this fall in the familiar building at Birmingham Crossroads, which used to be home to Wilbur & Rudy’s Farmtable. As Matilda’s Gallery and live music venue relocates to the adjacent property (just approved by city council), 7 Acre BarNgrill appears as if it will be yet another successful restaurant to add to the Sedgwicks' list of local favorites. The brainchild of Chris Sedgwick, front-of-house man Mix McCrory, and executive chef Jacob Ihara, 7 Acre BarNgrill will feature a 93 seat family-centric space. The menu is simple, but brilliant: comfort foods, a full bar, homemade pies, real “farm to fork” ingredients the locals expect in Milton. The twist is Ihara’s unique style. Expect to see authentic ramen and local, fresh,
hand-crafted cuisine from his kitchen. You’ll enjoy dishes like Pan Seared Ribeye with miso butter and silky whipped cauliflower; Crispy Fried Peking Duck with Jake’s Thai eggplant, carrot, sundried tomato, kumquat hash, plum sauce and celery root tortillas; and Miso Ramen (on the cover!) with crispy pork belly, pickled lotus blossoms, yakisoba noodles, green onions, nori and soft boiled egg.
Back to the Beginning It all began in 1991 with Van Gogh’s, which was Chris Sedgwick and Michele Sedgwick’s flagship restaurant in Roswell. Through lots of work, community support, a top notch team of front and back of house professionals and a creative, inventive menu, Van Gogh’s had a successful two decades year run before the Sedgwicks renamed and rebranded it as Bistro VG, ultimately selling their 'baby' to a new owner last year. Once Van Gogh's took off, the Sedgwicks did what many first-time restaurant owners hope to do: they opened a second restaurant, Vinny’s on Windward. For the 25 years since, this Italian powerhouse has served business professionals, couples, families and anyone desiring a casual fine-dining experience with consistent, attentive service. Vinny's had continued to be Fall 2018 -23

A hit with the locals, The Union was thought-up by Chris Sedgwick, long-time chef and owner of Sedgwick Restaurant Group. Featuring comfort foods like shrimp and grits, grandma Sedgwick's spaghetti, and coffee and doughnuts, The Union takes comfort food to a new level. Whether you're looking for a loaded wood-oven pizza, some Japanese-influenced ahi poke, or just a plain old good burger, this place has you covered" – all summer long!

Monkey 68 Monkey 68 Kitchen & Bar | www.monkey68atl.com 160 North Main Street, Alpharetta 30009 Later this summer, Monkey 68 – a "refined Asian" restaurant currently located in historic Roswell – is slated to open their second location on Alpharetta’s Main Street (inside the A.C. Studios & Cafe building). Owned by Mali Hu, this sushi-sake bar and restaurant offers an authentic Asian cuisine experience with entrees and small plates influenced by those found in China, Japan and Korea. The menu for the new Monkey 68 is yet to be finalized, but will feature a wide selection of cocktails, beer, wine, and sake in a full bar. One of Monkey's primary motifs is "curiosity," so be curious (and excited) to try everything Chef David Yun has to offer.

Milton sends eight to the Governor Honors Program By Ilana Mermelstein GHP is a residential summer program offering "majors" in a variety of subjects for rising juniors and seniors with academic and artistic gifts. Over a period of four weeks at Berry College, these students are encouraged to explore their interests outside a traditional class setting. After a competitive series of applications and interviews from high school students across the state, Milton High School is proud to send eight students in 2019.
A
Abby Burnett is a rising junior attending GHP for the visual arts. The experience will provide her with a taste of what it would be like to major in art in college, helping her make decisions in the future. “Art can be kind of risky, so I want to be sure [before I choose it as my major],” she elaborated. Though Burnett is passionate about art, she knows she can always continue to pursue it as a hobby if not as a career. “Art will always be a part of my life,” she said. In terms of her admission, Abby was faced with a written application and a series of interviews. She was also asked to provide a portfolio of her work and discuss the composition of each piece, as well as take a test on art history and principles. Despite the challenges, her talent and passion ultimately granted her admission to the program. In anticipation of her time at GHP, she said, “I am so excited to be able to work with fellow artists that are as passionate as me, and I think I’ll be able to learn a lot from different people.”
S
Sophie Chan, a rising senior at Milton, is attending GHP to study instrumental music, specifically the violin. As a music major, Chan was confronted with an admission process different from those in other areas of study. But as a violinist with more than eight years of experience, she was up to the challenge. According to Chan, her application consisted of multiple interviews involving her discussion of her favorite pieces of music, along auditions for each step of the process, sight-reading, and essays. However, all the hard work became well worth it for Chan when she received her admissions letter. In anticipation of GHP, Chan looks forward to “seeing what it’s like as a music major,” as she is considering music as an option for her college major, “as well as meeting all the cool people there.”

Andre Hamelberg, a rising senior, will be spending his time at GHP in the math major. Hamelberg is an advanced student in the math program at Milton High School, and he took a Georgia Tech math course in his junior year. He elaborated on his love of math, claiming that “[he] loves his math classes and [is] part of the math team and the science olympiad team.” Along with the other GHP candidates, Hamelberg was first nominated by a teacher, then completed a written application. He also completed a series of interviews, during which he explained his interest in the program and his passion for math. He was initially interested in attending GHP for math because it is his strongest subject and is something he wants to pursue in the future. His interest has only grown in anticipation of its arrival. Hamelberg looks forward to learning more about math, meeting new people and building connections during his time at GHP.
V
Vihan Karnala, a rising junior, will be representing Milton at GHP in the engineering major, and he will be studying mechanical design. “[Mechanical design] is basically designing and making things with computers and engineering,” he explained. For Karnala, not unlike the other applicants, the road to GHP wasn’t an easy one. Karnala was asked to write multiple essays for his application, as well as submit a video in which he detailed his creations with mechanical design. “[I] made a go-cart with an electric motor, so I have an electric model on my computer and a render of it spinning around...so I put that in the video” he said, adding that he also included his design of a machine that could cut things out of wood. Karnala first became interested in GHP because he saw an opportunity to experience the world of mechanical design. Now that he’s been admitted, he looks forward to living like a college student for four weeks.
D
Divya Nori, a rising junior at Milton, was admitted to GHP for biology. As an APA award winner for her research in the field of Behavioral and Social Sciences, Nori exemplifies the ideal GHP student. For Nori, “GHP is a way to expand [her] boundaries in a risk-free environment,” as there are no grades involved in the program. She completed an application and a few interviews, but as a science student, she was also asked to analyze data sets. Nori hopes to bring the knowledge she gains from her GHP experience to a career in biomedical engineering. “I’m interested in biomedical engineering because it combines biology, computer science, and math,” she explained. Nori looks forward to meeting like-minded people and fostering her passions at GHP.

Jo Pennington, a rising senior, was admitted to GHP for social studies. “I used to not care as much [about politics], but then I started reading more and watching the news, and I realized that this was really important,” she clarified. She was the Milton representative for the Georgia Student Coalition Against Gun Violence, and she volunteered for Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign, which contributed to her admission to GHP. However, extracurriculars alone would not guarantee her acceptance. “The interview process was really nerve-wracking,” she admitted. “I had to do what was like a fake Model UN conference for twenty minutes.” She and a group of other Georgia high school students debated global issues, representing an array of different countries. She excelled in her representation of the Netherlands, which factored into her admission. Pennington looks forward to the food on campus, the eagle reserve and strengthening her passion for social studies.
L
Luc Racheneur, a rising senior, was admitted to GHP as a French major. Though he spends much time in the French classroom, Racheneur also dedicates many hours to the Milton soccer program, along with clubs such as the French National Honor Society and Key Club. In discussing the application process, Racheneur claimed it was “long but worth the wait, [as it] paid off in the end." Racheneur anticipates a fulfilling experience at GHP, where he can improve his French, meet new people and create lasting friendships. Furthermore, Racheneur hopes his improved French will allow him to become fluent in additional languages, broadening his scope of the world.
A
Alex Salyer, a rising senior, is attending GHP for communicative arts. “[The communicative arts] include literature, but they also include every medium through which you can communicate information or feelings,” explained Salyer. She became interested in attending GHP because “it sounded like a fun experience” to meet new people, spend time on a college campus, and learn more about the world without being assigned a grade. According to Salyer, the application process began with a teacher nomination and written application, and it was followed by an interview and group discussion. “They give you a piece of literature, and you get ten minutes to discuss,” she elaborated. Salyer found the process to be enriching, and it allowed her to meet many new people with similar interests to her own. She looks forward to the experience of living on a college campus for four weeks, along with the opportunity to become acquainted with new people.
