THERE’S ONE THING WORSE THAN KNOWING YOU HAVE LUNG CANCER. NOT KNOWING.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death because often there are no symptoms until it has spread. The good news is a lung cancer screening can help detect it early when there are more treatment options. Northside Hospital Cancer Institute offers a low dose CT screening if you’re 55 – 77 years old and a current or previous smoker. It’s quick and easy and could save your life. For information call 404-531-4444 or visit northside.com/lung

Understanding Prostate Cancer By Dr. SCOTT MILLER

FOR AMERICAN MEN, prostate cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer, behind only lung cancer, and affects one in seven men. Fortunately, new research and improved treatment plans are yielding better outcomes and enabling patients to continue enjoying active, productive lives. Know your Risk No one knows exactly what causes prostate cancer, but research indicates several common factors that may increase a man’s risk of developing the disease: •Age. Odds of developing prostate cancer significantly increase if you are over 50. •Family History. Having a father or brother with the disease more than doubles your risk. •Race. You’re more likely to develop cancer if you’re African-American. •Diet. A diet high in red meat and high-fat dairy may increase your risk. Start the discussion Early detection is key in successfully treating many cancers. Beginning at age 50, men at average risk for developing prostate cancer should begin to discuss screening with their doctor. Men at high risk for developing prostate cancer should begin discussing screening even sooner, around 45. Typical prostate screenings include a rectal exam and a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test. If a suspicious lump or area is found during the rectal exam, or if a PSA test reveals higher-than–normal results, a biopsy of the prostate may be

performed to confirm if cancer is present. Spot the Signs In its earliest stages, prostate cancer usually has no symptoms. Any symptoms that do appear should be reported to your doctor right away. Symptoms that may occur include: •Blood in urine or semen •Frequent pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips, ribs or upper thighs •Trouble having or keeping an erection •Pain or burning during urination •Weakness or numbness in the legs Explore your Options Every case of prostate cancer is different and treatment options can vary. Several factors play a role in determining the most appropriate treatment – age and health, stage of the disease, and benefits and side effects of each treatment. In most cases, prostate cancer grows slowly. So men diagnosed with the disease usually have time to consider all available treatment options, gather additional opinions and, with the help of their doctor, decide on which option is best for them. Dr. Scott D. Miller is medical director of the advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgery program at Northside Hospital. For more information about prostate cancer and available screening and treatment options, visit northside.com/prostate.

CEVICHE 2 LOCATIONS: 963 Canton Street, Roswell 42 Milton Avenue, Alpharetta

Celebrating nine successful years in Roswell, Ceviche opened their second location in downtown Alpharetta in late 2015. cevichetaqueria.com

DOWNTOWN ALPHARETTA continues to impress with unique, one-of-a kind shops, boutiques, salons and fabulous restaurants. One of the newest restaurants on the block is Ceviche, located at 42 Milton Avenue in the heart of the downtown action, offering plenty of indoor seating, a large, comfortable bar and an outdoor patio for dining al fresco. Co-owners Mikka Orrick and Trent Bramblett opened the first Ceviche nine years ago on Canton Street in downtown Roswell and this second location in Alpharetta in late 2015. The quality ingredients, colorful presentation, attentive and enthusiastic service and comfortable atmosphere have won this location a vast and loyal following of locals looking for fresh, authentic Mexican menu items not offered in nearby chain restaurants. Not your typical Mexican spot, they offer true, “authentic” Mexican food---with a twist, a wide variety of tequila and a hospitable, knowledgeable staff. The Alpharetta location is a bit larger, but still small enough to make it easy to catch up with old friends while making new ones. Open Sunday through Thursday from 11:00AM to 10:00PM, and Friday-Saturday from 11:00AM to 11:00pm, guests will enjoy a quick, delicious lunch or a scrumptious dinner. Visit during Happy Hour; and you’re sure to meet new friends as you try the numerous and various versions of margaritas and specialty drinks from the bar. The owners are locals; and together with General Manager Joel Price, have an appreciation especially for local guests. They’re quick to remember your name and your favorite drink at your second visit! They are active in the community, in the Chamber,

and as sponsor of various downtown events and festivals. Causes dear to their heart include the “Pennies for Patients” program of the Leukemia Society, Stick it to Cancer, and Safe Ride America. Request the Ceviche First Timer if you’re new to this Mexican version of cold seafood salad. It’s a small sampler platter of three ceviche, choosing between Mahi, Shrimp, Tilapia or Scallop. Or, if you’re already familiar with the great taste, then come hungry and order the Ceviche Pro, which is similar to the First Timer, but with much larger portions. Specialty dishes include Chimi Borracha (pork chimichanga smothered in queso and salsa borracha), Fajita Nachos, Shrimp a la Diablo and the Burrito Grande. Also offered are soups, salads, appetizers, sandwiches, wraps and desserts. Guests are presented with an extensive drink menu consisting of a large variety of margaritas, specialty drinks, beer and wine. Ceviche is an ideal, convenient spot for the office lunch or corporate meeting; but they also cater for large or small groups for off-site gatherings. Nightlife at Ceviche kicks off at happy hour and patrons enjoy a lively, friendly atmosphere for that special date night or night out with friends or family. Beginning September 3rd, Ceviche will be your “go-to” place for college ball, SEC Network, BIG TEN and Sunday Ticket; and they’ll be having a sweet kick-off party for the NFL games on September 11th, with drink specials and food specials for every game. 42 Milton Avenue, Alpharetta GA 30009 cevichetaqueria.com, 770.777.0230

DIFFERENT SHADES OF TECH

W

WE EACH MAY have a favorite color, sometimes two. Maybe three ... but isn’t there always that number one personal favorite. Technology has become almost as diverse as the spectrum of colors. There is something for everyone to work with; and there is something for everyone to learn. There are the digital arts, the game designing, the world of mobile apps, and the almighty engineering and programming. But this is just at the surface, as there is more in the depths of the tech world where anyone can find his own area of expertise. From databases to project management, quality assurance to compliance, each is IT specific and extremely specialized. Technology is the most diverse and fastest growing area of study. Some of the highest paid jobs are in technology. Haven’t we heard many stories of large corporations buying out new technologies or apps for smaller enterprises for large sums of money? Haven’t we fantasized that we could be the next inventor or the next great thing, the most loved project on Kickstarter, or the

We can apply this same philosophy in our quest for our ideal technology match. We can try our hand at engineering before we say we can’t build, or try programming before we say we are not a math person, or try digital media before we tell ourselves we are not creative. The secret to success in technology is one--and only one—thing. We should never stop learning. And Tech Academies like STREM HQ provide this opportunity to fulfill the need to grow and soar the skies of success. It is very important to learn it technology in the right environment, with the right tools and the right instructor. We can take our ideas, jump on board the tech train; and learn how to make our ideas reality. BS

The Local Fish Guru’s

Dish On Fish kathleenscatch.com

WHAT MAKES SALMON so tasty? FAT. Yes, it’s true, fat is good at least when it comes to salmon. Why, you ask? Well, there’s a lot that goes into one salmon being more delicious than the next. This “dish on fish” explains. Salmon are born at the top of freshwater rivers in little ponds. As they grow, they start swimming down river towards the ocean while undergoing a transformation from freshwater to saltwater. If they survive the trip they head out to the ocean to spend 3 to 4 years eating and storing up fat. Once they have stored enough fat, they focus all their energy on making it up the river to the pond where they were born. There, females lay eggs, males fertilize them and then they die. So many challenges! The salmon must make the transition from fresh to saltwater and then back again! It must find its way down the river to the ocean! It must know how long to swim in the ocean and how much fat to retain in order to swim home!

Since some rivers are much longer and have higher elevations the fish calling these rivers home have to work harder than those swimming a less difficult distance. Each salmon has a genetic knowledge that tells it how fat and strong to get and an internal compass that tells it which river is theirs and where in the river to return. For example, fish from the Copper River in Alaska need a lot of fat to make it home. The river is nearly 300 miles long and the water rushes powerfully from the glaciers high in the Chugach and the St. Elias Wrangell mountains. If you are lucky enough to get one of these magnificent creatures on your dinner plate, you are blessed with a meal of immeasurable flavor and texture. Kathleen’s Catch is located at 12660 Crabapple Road. Families can expect anything from friendly animals provided by the Atlanta Zoo to fire trucks and meet-and-greets with the Alpharetta Fire and Rescue Department. Little Acorns, along with Avalon, truly offers the complete package. Carla Toro, Director of Marketing for North American Properties and Avalon, recognizes the core value of the property as “fun for families and children.” Little Acorns provides memorable activities for toddlers, and Avalon as a whole truly prides itself on bringing the community together.

Seasonal events also occur on site as well, like the Easter Egg Hunt, the Lighting of Avalon during the holidays, a Santa program and even a complete ice-skating rink designed to attract families and friends of all ages. These experiences, along with Little Acorns, center solely around family and children, as Avalon desires to feature a scene for everyone.

“We wanted to create a living room for families as well as provide retailers with a chance to get in front of the community,” Toro said.
