alpharetta history
Close your eyes
and step back in time to 1858. Horses clip clopping through a bustling downtown and settlers exchanging goods at the local trading post. That’s just a snapshot of the cotton town Alpharetta was, way back when. On December 11, 1858, the city of Alpharetta was chartered. It was created to serve as the county seat of Milton County, and make it easier for its residents to vote, get a marriage license or draft a will. Sixth generation Alpharetta native Connie Mashburn has watched Alpharetta grow over the years. His family first settled the community in the 1830’s as farmers and once owned one of Alpharetta’s historical sites, the B.F. Shirley Home on Cumming Street. “Just about everyone farmed,” says Mashburn. “I grew up on a poultry farm selling chickens and eggs.” You can take a walk through time and explore nineteen of Alpharetta’s historical sites including the B.F. Shirley Home, and learn about the city’s past. Visit 2 South Main Street where the Courthouse of Milton County once stood and learn how Milton County got it’s name, but get ready for a debate! 29 South Main Street once hosted Alpharetta’s original business district until a fire destroyed much of the town at the turn of the century.
birthday in 2008, the Old Milton History and Genealogy Group was asked to write a book about Alpharetta’s history. Mashburn, one of the group’s members, interviewed dozens of Alpharetta natives and collected hundreds of never before seen pictures for the book, Alpharetta, Milton County - The Early Years. “We got some things down on paper and got some photos that might not have been seen otherwise. The old natives are getting older and several that we interviewed for the book are now deceased,” says Mashburn. And some of the those stories can only from “the oldtimers.” Like Civil War soldiers marching through Alpharetta in search of food after the railways were cut off. And in the field across from The Union Restaurant in Milton, Milton County’s first post office was open for business, way back when in 1834 when horses brought the mail. Mashburn knows one thing for sure, you can preserve history but you can’t stop progress. “I loved it when there were 500 people here and I love it now. I’m fine with what’s taking place.” www.alpharettahistoricalsocity.org You can buy a copy of the book Alpharetta, Milton County - The Early Years at the new City Hall in Alpharetta.

Runway-Inspired: 5 Fashion-Forward Elements to Dress Up a Room People often ask
us what inspires our designs. And while it ranges from our travels to the latest movie sets to reimagining past styles for today, fashion is always a part of it. This season we saw great runway looks inspired by one of our favorite design eras: the early 1970s, a freedom- and fun-loving time with great creativity. Here’s how it translated into some elegant and unexpected elements for our rooms. 1.) Tibetan wool: Fur and shearling vests have been making appearances in all kinds of weather. We added touches to our rooms on ottomans and chairs. You can see it looking especially fun on the cushions of our spectacular new ‘70s-inspired Bastille birdcage chair. 2.) Metallic accents: Many of our storage pieces feature metallic trim and hardware that we often custom design--we see it as the jewelry of a room. And we love mixing metals by using accessories in stainless steel, bronze, and brass together, in finishes from polished to satin. Prints and wall art that incorporate metallics are another way we like to add shimmer. 3.) Leathers in fun colors: Two new leathers in

soft hues that we’ve just added to our line speak to springtime and nature’s influence on us, as well as to fashion: eucalyptus and denim. They look especially fresh paired with sofas and chairs in crisp white slipcovers, which can be done in a washable denim fabric for easier maintenance. 4.) Fashion fabrics: A sofa in classic menswear tweed has always been a look we love—it’s timeless and adds subtle texture and color to a room. This season, chambray shirts influenced us to put a soft blue chambray slipcover on our made-for-relaxing Dr. Pitt sectional. We also found a fabulous faux black patent leather…you can see it on our iconic Major chair with a satin-brass frame...a great vintage-inspired look. 5.) Amethyst & crystal accessories: Seeing how stone or crystal necklaces enhance an outfit without overpowering it reminds us how much warmth and design interest natural elements from votive holders to bookends to objets contribute. Let your personal attraction to a piece be one guide—but also look for pieces with quality—you’ve chosen beautiful well-made furniture, now your accents should reflect that. We often pick accents both pretty and practical—bowls, trays, boxes, candleholders—it’s a great way to keep organized and help prevent an overdone, cluttered look. awesomealpharetta.com

Most
people know Wills Park for it’s ginormous playground, equestrian events and host to almost every kid sport known to Alpharetta. But the park is also home to one of Alpharetta’s best kept secrets.... the Arboretum. An Arboretum is a collection of trees that are assembled and maintained for education, research and enjoyment by the community. Located in Wills Park, the 110 acre multi-use arboretum is host to dozens of native and non-native tree species. Need some landscaping ideas? Take a stroll through the park and see if a Sycamore tree suits your fancy or if you are more of a Southern Red Oak kind of person. Another treasure of the Arboretum is the Community Garden. The garden is 100% organic and funded by donations from the community. Local students, boy scouts and girls scouts have supported the garden through fundraisers and planting projects The garden is a year-round project. Visitors can expect to see garlic in the winter months, carrots, lettuce,

snap and snow peas in the spring. Fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, cantaloupe, corn, eggplant, okra, peppers, blueberries, raspberries in the summer and beets, broccoli, cabbage, collards, kale, lettuce, mustard, peas, radishes and spinach in the fall. The Community Garden also allows “plotholders” to grow their own food. There are 37 plots at the garden available to lease on a first come first serve basis but you must be resident of Alpharetta or Milton. During the main growing season, some produce is donated to The Pantry at North Fulton Charities. Planting season is just around corner. Take a peek in the community garden before you plant your own and see what thrives in Georgia! You can visit Alpharetta’s other Arboretums at Webb Bridge Park and Cogburn Road Park. The El Felix
By Ashlyn Stallings
Ford Fry’s
latest restaurant, The El Felix, has opened in phase one of the new Avalon development in Alpharetta. Fry and Chef Kevin Maxey, vice president of culinary for Fry’s restaurants, together designed a “Mex-Tex” menu that plays to their Texan roots. This is Fry’s first venture outside of the city of Atlanta. “Kevin and I wanted to do food we like to eat,” Fry said. “It’s natural for a chef to want to be true to a certain culture, and likewise, we wanted to do authentic ‘Mex-Tex’ because it developed where we’re from.” In creating the menu, East Texas-natives Fry and Maxey traced the begins of the cuisine to the 1930s. Fry and Maxey’s menu includes classic Tex-Mex techniques and ingredients: dishes like tacos, enchiladas, and fajitas. The menu will also include puffy tacos, a classic staple in San Antonio Tex-Mex. 22
“They were the only ones doing those at first,” Fry said. “Then, puffy tacos made their way to Houston, and then into Austin. We want to explore and hit on all those areas.” Ford Fry’s in-house designer Elizabeth Ingram helped shape the space by designing the details inside The El Felix, and agrees that it has a more relaxed vibe than Ford’s restaurants that lie inside the Atlanta perimeter. “This one’s kinda funky,” she said. “It’s industrial and pretty casual.” Avalon is a sustainably-designed 86-acre mixeduse development located in the heart of Alpharetta. Phase One of Avalon includes 400,000 square feet of retail and restaurants, 108,000 square feet of loft office space, and luxury rental and single family homes. Ford Fry is chef and managing partner for JCT. Kitchen & Bar, King + Duke, no. 246, The Optimist and Oyster Bar at The Optimist, and St. Cecilia. awesomealpharetta.com

The social aspect of dining and the true artistry of food By Belinda Smith
The
art of creating sumptuous, thought-provoking food which inspires an unforgettable dining experience is the core concept at South Main Kitchen. The much-talkedabout restaurant located in downtown Alpharetta at 9 South Main Street is the product of owner, Louis Soon, formally the GM at Roswell successes such as Salt Factory, Little Alley Steak House and Opulent. Opened in late August of this year, South Main Kitchen has quickly become one of the new go-to establishments for those with a true appreciation of new American cuisine. Soon's expertise purposefully pared with the inspiring creations of Executive Chef, Christy Stone, offers a unique understanding of American fare. From an eclectic variety of "Bar Bites" and Starters such as Pork Rinds with spicy chili sauce and Boiled Peanut Hummus & Jams, South Main Kitchen introduces its customers to a new twist on comfort with menu items like the W. Allgood Burger (bibb lettuce, heirloom tomatoes, smoked Gouda, chili aioli) and Pork Osso Buco (bacon risotto, roasted carrots and parsnips, locallifepublishing.com • alpharetta magazine spring 2015
gremolata, blackberry pan sauce). Rustic comfort is the intent in this refurbished 1906 building. Exposed brick and reclaimed wood throughout set the perfect stage for an open view into the fast-paced kitchen. Those lucky enough to find a seat at the chef’s table will have the optimal vantage point of the artistry and skill involved in creating this highly-original cuisine. And for clientele, more inclined to open-air seating, the back deck provides a charming atmosphere and full-service under the stars. Seating aside, early arrival for dinner is imperative, allowing ample time to enjoy a cocktail or two on the uncompromising roof-top bar…the one and only in Alpharetta. Garnering high-scores and rave reviews since it’s opening, South Main Kitchen is the perfect addition to this up-and-coming restaurant area. It is sure to become a mainstay and a local favorite to the residents and visitors of Alpharetta. South Main Kitchen is open from Monday through Saturday from 11:00 - 2:30 for lunch and then again from 4:30 - 10:00 pm for dinner. And on Sunday from 12:00 – 9:00 pm. 25

N. Fulton GOLDEN GAMES - YOUR TIME TO SHINE By Lisa Lossie
Move over fifty
“Why not?” says Nelson. Whether you work out weekly or just want to try something new, the Golden Games have something for everyone.
The City of Alpharetta is partnering with its neighbors Johns Creek, Milton, Roswell and Sandy Springs to host the North Fulton Golden Games for people 50 and older.
This year, there is even a trivia tournament for those who want to flex their brain power. For Nelson, it’s also a time to get back to one of her of her true loves.
The opening ceremony and field day will be held at Wills Park on Wednesday April 29, 2015 starting at 10am. This is the 21st year of the North Fulton Golden Games. The games will take place from the end of April through May.
“I used to be pretty good at tennis,” says Nelson. “Tennis anyone? I just need a partner,” jokes the octogenarian.
and nifty, fifty is the new forty! So forget all those cliches of gray hair, white sneakers and canes and get ready to show how 50 and older is FIT and FIERCE at the 21st Annual North Fulton Golden Games. Whether you’re 50, 60, 70, 80 or 102 years young, the Golden Games are your time to shine!

7 SIGNS YOUR CHILD MIGHT BE DEPRESSED
We tend to
associate being a child with being carefree, and not with depression. But depression and mental health challenges are far from just for adults. Children can be more emotional than adults, and a certain amount of mood swings is part of being a kid. So how can a parent tell if their child is depressed, or just a typical child with ups and downs as they navigate growing up? 1. Your child is exhibiting emotional responses that are not usual for him or her. Are they more irritable than you’ve seen them? Moping about and not wanting to play with their toys? 2. Their moods are lasting much longer than usual. or are changing far too quickly. If they were always the sort to have a quick temper tantrum but be fine an hour later, but suddenly seem upset for entire afternoons, it can be a sign your child is suffering anxiety or depression. So can incessant rapid changes in mood. 3. Their unusual behavior goes on for weeks. Depression is, if anything, persistent. Normal moods come and go. Depression goes on for weeks or months. 4. Their behavior doesn’t seem connected to circumstance. If they are sad and weepy but tell you they don’t know why, or if they are angry with a sibling who has done nothing wrong, it might be a red flag. 28
5. Your child’s emotions are affecting their functioning on a daily basis. Have teachers reported changes in their focus or ability? Do they seem uninterested in their hobbies or friends, are they socially withdrawing? Seem oversensitive to rejection? 6. They are using a depressed perspective and phrases of doom and gloom. Children can be dramatic, naturally. But pay attention for changes in what your child talks about. Are they telling you that nobody likes them even when their friends are calling them? Then look for expressions of low confidence, such as ‘I am no good at anything’, or ‘nothing good ever happens to me’. 7. Your child is exhibiting regressed behavior. Are they suddenly whining, clinging, or otherwise acting less independent than usual? Are they sucking their thumb again, or even using baby talk? Wetting the bed again for the first time in years? money: My 5 Top Investment Picks for 2015 by SD Davis
According to top
consensus Wall Street strategists, the U.S. stock market should rise another 10% in 2015 to around 2200 on the S&P 500 Index. Following are five ideas to enhance your portfolio for the year. 1) 1.15% One Year CD; It’s always nice to make something extra on your safe money. One year keeps you short term liquid and is a competitive sweet spot in yield with banks seeking deposits. FDIC insurance covers up to $250K per account. My favorites at the time of writing are: Nationwide Bank (nationwide.com/onlinebanking) with a 1.14% one year CD yield.; CIT Bank (bankoncit.com) with a 1.15% yield is a large Livingston, NJ outfit.; BankDirect out of Dallas, TX has a 1.17% yield. 2) European Currency Hedged ETF, With the European Central Bank promising to implement quantitative easing to impede further deflationary pressures, European stocks could become beneficiaries of easy money policy. Wisdom Tree’s HEDJ, and iShare’s HEZU are currency hedged ETFs capture the upside of theEuro-region stocks without the euro to dollar currency headwind. 3) Google Inc.(symbols: Googl, Goog); Google lagged the market sorely in 2014. Investors are distracted by Google’s
30
more experimental arm with such concoctions as Google glasses, self-driving cars, and high-speed Internet access. But overall company revenues continue to grow at a 20% clip from Google’s core search and that should continue. 4) American International Group (symbol: AIG) The bad taste from a government bailout during the great recession keeps the stock price of this insurance Goliath depressed. I calculate the price to tangible book value ratio at around .75. The company has paid back the government from the bailout, performance has been solid recently and the companies goals are to increase ROE to 10%. 5) United Continental Holdings Inc. (symbol: UAL); After a big run, this stock might be better purchased on dips. A more consolidated industry and lower fuel prices are two big positive trends for the airline industry and United. Despite the run on the stock, the company still trades at around 8 times 2015 projected earnings – a substantial discount to the overall market. on BOHEMIA and VINNY’S ON WINDWARD
The name alone
sets the theme before you even walk in the door. Think artists, gypsies, free spirited women — yes, that is the look and the feel of Bohemia with their fun and eclectic jewelry, clothing lines, home accessories and more. Formerly Market 334 of Cumming, this store in Alpharetta, is a smaller version jam packed with your favorites from before as well as new unique product lines. Their selection of yoga pants, rain boots, maxi skirts, silky pants, peasant blouses, giftables and more are definitely different from your usual boutique shopping experience. You never know what you are going to find, but it’s all unique! Whether you want fun accessories, home decor, or clothing, this is a fun stop to pop into when you are near downtown Alpharetta. Follow Bohemia’s Facebook page for the latest news. 11770 Haynes Bridge Road, Alpharetta. NEXT STOP: We had heard that Vinny’s on Windward has a “power lunch” crowd due to its location in the busy business area of Windward parkway. Due to the open space and high ceilings, the restaurant has a vibrant atmosphere that is perfect for ladies who lunch or the business crowd. The zuppa di pesce, a seafood soup, and tonno con pinzimonio, rare seared big eye tuna salad, pinzimonio vegetables, reggiano parmigiano and lime were fabulous. There was something crunchy that made that salad really unique and tasty. a child’s birthday party used to be simple. A cake, a few friends, some party hats and a game of pin the tail on the donkey for excitement. But throwing a party today for your little one can be much more complicated. It can raise your stress and budget to a whole new level. Need some help? Let Them Eat Cake Expensive bakery cake or homemade – who is this cake for? Splurge on a fancy, delicious bakery cake for the grownups, but have a simple homemade smash cake or cupcakes for the birthday cutie and friends to pulverize. Better Than Goody Bags Don’t waste money on bags of little trinkets that get thrown away. Give one neat thing instead. How about a king-size candy bar? A flashlight or cowboy hat? Maybe some cute hair accessories or cozy, fuzzy socks? Making Memories Before your guests arrive, take pictures of the cake, tables, decorations and guest of honor in his/her perfectly clean birthday outfit. To make sure you get in some pictures, hand your camera to a friend to snap candid pictures of you and your child during the party. Get a group shot of everyone in attendance and use it on your thank you notes. Get Some Help Look for great professional party places in and around Alpharetta. Book your time, invite your guests, and show up -- a good party facility will take care of the rest! microchips 101 By Jennifer Ferrel
I was driving
home recently when I saw a familiar scene: a dog running loose. I pulled over and was able to coax him to me. He was a beautiful and boisterous black lab. I was happy to see he had a collar, but my heart sank when I realized that he didn’t have any identification tags on. The energetic cutie bounded all over my car, found a tennis ball from under the seat and tried to get me to play fetch with him. I knew that someone must be missing this fun dog! I drove him to the closest veterinary hospital and luckily this story ended happily: they used a universal scanner, detected a microchip, and his owner arrived to pick him up 20 minutes later. There are several lost pet websites listing dozens of dogs and cats missing around Milton recently. The local shelters take in hundreds of pets each month! Sadly, awesomealpharetta.com

only about 25% of dogs and 5% of cats that enter shelters as strays are reunited with their owners. Many don’t think about microchipping their cat, but cats especially need them. It is 20 times more likely that your lost cat will be found if it has a microchip.

Keeping a collar on your pet with an ID tag (the pet’s name, your phone number +/- address) is the easiest way for your dog or cat to be found, but often collars can slip off. Some collars can be dangerous for outdoor cats, and “breakaway” collars fall off. ID tags can become worn and unreadable. Every pet should have a microchip as a back up form of identification.
5)There are different types of microchips and scanners. Some only read certain types, but most veterinarians and shelters now have a “universal scanner” that can read all of them.
Microchips 101 1) A microchip is a tiny electronic transponder the size of a grain of rice. It is activated by a scanner that transmits radiowaves to the chip. The chip uses no batteries, and is designed to have a lifespan of 25 years. 2)The microchip is not a GPS tracker. A unique identification number appears on the scanner, and your pet’s information can be looked up so they can be reunited with you. There is a database designed by American Animal Hospital Association that makes it easier to look up most ID numbers. 3)A veterinarian or trained veterinary technician needs to implant the microchip. It is a simple injection and takes seconds. It is no more painful than getting a vaccination. Some prefer to have it done if the pet is under anesthesia for other reasons, but that is not necessary. The veterinarian will provide you with paperwork or a website to register the
4)Register your pet’s information! It is estimated that only 1/2 of microchips are registered. Keep it updated if you move or if your pet has a new owner.
6)Have your veterinarian “check the chip” at the wellness visit each year. That will ensure the scanner and chip are working and in place, and help you remember to update your registration. Your vet can keep a record of your pet’s microchip number. 7)Whenever you find a lost pet without ID tags get them to a veterinarian or shelter as soon as possible so they can be checked with a universal scanner for a microchip. 8)Have any new dog or cat you adopt from a rescue or a breeder checked to see if they already have a microchip. Hopefully you will never lose your beloved pet, but if you do, a microchip can help make sure that your story has a happy ending, too. Dr Jennnifer Ferrell graduated the University of Florida veterinary school in 1999. She practiced until 2008 when she had chldren. She remains active in continuing education, volunteering veterinary care and writing on veterinary topics. 41

A Guide to Club Fitting By Chris Wright, Director of Golf Alpharetta Athletic Club
18th Hole Alpharetta Athletic Club
Like any professional
, if you want to perform at your best… you need the right tools. Golf is no different! To get the most out of your golf swing, it is essential that you have consistency throughout your entire set of clubs. You do not have to be a great player to be a good candidate for a club fitting session. If you have a repeatable golf swing, a club fitting session is the best way, regardless of your skill level, to ensure that you are using a set of clubs designed specifically for your unique swing. It is important to remember that club fitting isn’t a magic bullet. The goal of golf club fitting is to help reduce the severity of the faults in your golf swing, minimize your shot dispersion and put the golf club in the best possible position at impact to strike the ball solidly and with accuracy. The end result creates more consistency in a player’s golf swing and increased opportunity to shoot lower 46
scores. Because there are so many golf clubs on the market, start the process by trying several different brands and styles of golf clubs. You may want to choose clubs which feel more comfortable and visually appealing to you as an individual. A club that looks appealing at address can inspire confidence over each shot. Don’t become preoccupied with one particular brand just because your favorite tour player uses them! Club fitting is about finding what works best for you. Once you feel comfortable with your choice of clubs; it’s a good idea to focus on a particular area of your golf game when considering a club fitting session. Perhaps, start with your irons at one fitting session or narrow the focus to a specific club/ clubs like your driver, fairway woods or wedges. A fitting session may cost as little as nothing to as much as a few hundred dollars depending on the awesomealpharetta.com
where to play type of fitting package and amount of time spent fitting the club or clubs. A good club fitting session will look at a number of factors including club length, lie angle, shaft characteristics and grip size. All these things must be considered in addition to the basic mechanics of your swing. Technology also plays a major role in club fitting. Certified club fitters can measure ball speed, flight, spin rates and even launch angles to determine your typical shot patterns. This data is cross-reference with thousands of club/shaft combinations to identify those that will enhance the performance of your swing. Club fitting takes all the guesswork out. The goal of every club fitting session is to improve upon the ability of each individual golfer to help them achieve their personal goals. Regardless of your skill level, every golfer can benefit from a custom golf club fitting. If you are interested in scheduling a club fitting session or simply enquire, you can now take advantage of the expertise available at the new NIKE Performance Center at Alpharetta Athletic Club. They have the ability to fit all major golf brands, and also offer re-gripping and club adjustment services. The fitting center is open to the public and certified fitting professionals are ready to assist you with any of your club fitting needs. Chris Wright, Director of Golf at Alpharetta Athletic Club in Milton is a Class A PGA professional, experienced working with players of all ages and skill levels. He played soccer at Georgia State before graduating from Mercer University and is married to his wife Amanda with two boys.

The Golf Club of Georgia • 1 Golf Club Dr., 30005 www.golfclubofgeorgia.com Two Arthur Hills-designed courses, Lakeside and Creekside are distinctly different from each other offering the golfer enormous architectural, aesthetic and strategic variety. In 1999, Golf Digest honored Lakeside’s par-5, 607 yard 11th hole as one of “America’s Best 99 Golf Holes.” Alpharetta Athletic Club East • 3430 Highway 9 N, 30004 www. alpharettaac.com Alpharetta Athletic Club’s East Course offers a par 72 Michael Riley design that plays nearly 7000 yards from the back tee. PEDAL THROUGH ALPHARETTA By Lisa Lossie Jim Texter loved exploring the roads of Michigan on his bicycle. But when he moved to Georgia 17 years ago, his hobby took a hit. “I came to Georgia and it was dangerous, the only time I would get out on my bike was Saturday and Sunday mornings at 6am before the traffic came out.” Now President of Bike Alpharetta, he and others are working to change that. “The City of Alpharetta is very bike friendly now,” says Texter. But still not bike friendly enough according to Bike Alpharetta. Three years ago, Jackie Tyson founded the not for profit organization to work with community and city leaders to advocate a safe environment for bicycle use in the City of Alpharetta. Bike Alpharetta focuses on using awareness and education to support city leaders and planners in an advisory capacity to ensure that all types of bike riders can have fun and be safe.
mention which thrilled Bike Alpharetta. Now the group is working with community leaders and city planners to incorporate some changes in hopes of becoming officially Bike Friendly this fall. Educating bikers and drivers on safety and sharing the road is one of their goals. “When a person is on a bike, we have no defense, we don’t have armor around us like a car,” says Tyson Founder/Treasurer of Bike Alpharetta. For bikers getting ready to explore the roads of Alpharetta, Tyson has three tips. • Riding for fun or exercise? Ride in the lowest traffic times, Saturday or Sunday mornings • Commuting to work by bike? Wear bright-colored clothing like neon or orange. • Obey the rules of the road. Stop at stop signs, signal with your arms and put lights on your bike.
“My dream would be for Alpharetta to be bike friendly so people are not afraid to go out and bike,” says Texter.
“Just remember, the person riding the bike is someone’s mother or father, daughter or son,” says Tyson. “So please be courteous, it’s not going to delay you.”
The first time the city applied for official Bike Friendly status, they were granted an honorable

NEW BUSINESS: Countryside Pet Estates
Finding the perfect
spot for your pet just became easier with the opening of Countryside Pet Estates in Milton, GA (2540 Hopewell Road). Countryside Pet Estates is the premier facility in the Southeast for dog and cat boarding, day care, grooming and training.
“We take great pride in our family atmosphere and approach, where we provide the best possible care for your pets with the appropriate amount of human interaction, activities, walks, plays, rest and LOVE. I fall in love with each pet that stays with us,” said Engleka. “We are so appreciative of the kind words and outpouring support from the surrounding residents and communities.”
Owner, Peg Engleka, dreamed of a new first-class facility where the #1 priority is providing the best possible care and individual attention for pet guests. Situated on nearly 6 acres of horse-country farmland, Countryside Pet Estates provides peace of mind while you are away on business or pleasure, knowing your pets are staying in a beautiful, safe and caring environment surrounded by an animal-loving staff.
Victoria Stilwell endorsed Trainer, Lisa Matthews and her positive reinforcement training company, Pawsitive Practice Training, is the Official Training Partner of Countryside Pet Estates. Matthews and her team of highly certified professional trainers offer Manners and Obedience, American Kennel Club Curriculum, Specialty and Private Training classes. (PawsitivePractice.com)
Countryside Pet Estates offers Boarding, Day Care, Grooming and Training services. Dog Boarding consists of his/her own indoor, climate controlled, over-sized individual rooms (families of dogs may stay together) with rates starting as low as $35 for Petite Rooms. Three Room Options are available, including Petite (32 sq ft/dogs under 40 lbs), Luxury (40 sq ft) and Penthouse (64 sq ft). Activities include Day Care, Individual/Group Play, Nature Walks and lots of human attention and love. Day Care is offered in ½ and full day packages. Cat Boarding is located in a separate room from the dogs and includes stays in individual or family condos. 50
“I am overly impressed with the facility and staff at Countryside Pet Estates,” said City of Milton Mayor Joe Lockwood during Opening Ceremonies in which he cut the ribbon at Countryside Pet Estates. “I would feel most comfortable having my pets stay here for their vacation.” Countryside Pet Estates is open Monday through Friday (7am – 7pm) and Saturday and Sunday (9am – 5pm). The Buzz About Essential Oils By Cristina Zakis
Have you been
hearing about essential oils? My journey with essential oils began 11 years ago when my doctor recommended that we use the oil of Oregano on the soles of our feet to boost our immune systems. To this day my boys, ages 11 and 9, have not needed an antibiotic. Neither one has had strep throat nor ear infections. We do strive to keep a healthy life style, but I am sure the oil of Oregano had a lot to do with this result. Essential oils are extracted from various parts plants or trees. The highest quality essential oils are Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (CPTG) ensuring the purest form of the oil. At this level of purity some can be ingested with great benefits. For example, I drink Lemon essential oil in my water every day to help cleanse my body of toxins. The oil of Oregano has the following properties: antibacterial, antibiotic, antiparasitic, antiviral and disinfectant, therefore it is very beneficial for boosting the immune system and for fighting off a virus or bacteria as noted on www.everythingessential.me. Because the oil of Oregano is a “hot” oil, meaning that it can burn your skin, it is best to use a carrier 52
oil such as fractionated coconut oil when you apply it to a child or on your skin other than on the soles of your feet. When someone in my family becomes ill we immediately apply the oil of Oregano to their feet and repeat it every 30 minutes until they begin to feel better. If the symptoms come with fever then we apply Peppermint oil to their forehead and spine (again use a carrier oil for young children). We are blessed to have a wide assortment of certified pure therapeutic grade essential oils in our home so that we are prepared to assist our body with any ailment that may come our way. We rarely rely on over the counter medications and seldom need to go the doctor. Dr. Axe, who has been on the Dr. Oz show, says this about the oil of Oregano, “It’s the ultimate natural antibiotic!” (http://draxe.com/oregano-oil-benefits-superior-prescription-antibiotics/) My family has come to rely on it whenever we are sick and to prevent illnesses. For more information on how to incorporate the oils into your family’s lifestyle e-mail me at cristinazakis@yahoo.com. Cristina is a wife, mother, teacher and doTerra Wellness Advocate who enjoys helping people incorporate essential oils, gifts from God, into their lives. awesomealpharetta.com

Humble Pie Pizza Company
Your Classic Rock Indie Pizzeria By Toren Anderson
Something fresh
is on pizza scene. Literally. Humble Pie Pizza Company has one simple mission, to serve up the best pizza in this area and make their customers really happy. We love it when a great indie place pops up!
spring ca
"At Humble Pie - you're a person and not a number," says Andrew Adams, owner and a 20-year veteran of the industry. HPPC is quickly becoming a beloved neighborhood spot for stopping in to dine and watch games or events on their 12 HD televisions. This is the new go-to for after ball games, family nights, office lunches and much more. Chef Abe Colin is a veteran of NY, the pizza mecca of our nation. He is a classically trained cheese maker and award-winning pizzaiolo. His masterpiece pie was awarded the national title of "Best Pizza in Northeast America" at the International Pizza Expo in Las Vegas in 2010. It's like an Oscar for the pizza people. The food is wonderful, we have hosted some of our most discriminating foodie friends there and HPPC earned their thumbs up every time. We order from Chef Abe's daily specials on their giant chalkboard. He posts daily and his culinary creativity shines. The custom speckled wheat dough is perfect and made in-house. Also, their unique house made savory secret pizza sauce recipe which contains no sugar or artificial sweeteners. Try Chef Abe's gorgeously good Nutella and strawberry calzone for dessert. 60s and 70s era rock and roll is the backdrop amidst bright booths and custom artwork. As you dine, classic rock tunes, you know-all-the-words-to flow through the air. It's so cool that since we are paying for our family to dine there, we can hear some of "our" music. You know, the good stuff. The Stones, Eric Clapton, Allman Brothers, ELO, Fleetwood Mac and of course, Bruce Springsteen. You will surely be in a better mood after grabbing a bite and singing a fun song in your head as you drive out to face what life may throw your way. Or let them deliver to you at home or work, seven days a week. HPPC has officially partnered with North Fulton's Blessings in a Backpack - People Magazine's #1 Charity in 2012 which provides food for hungry children on weekends. Food is distributed 30+ Fridays each school year. HPPC is a drop off point for all non-perishable donations. Please contact Andrew to learn more. humblepiepizzaco.net

Mothers Day
Prayer
God our Creator, we pray: for new mothers, coming to terms with new responsibility; for expectant mothers, wondering and waiting; for those who are tired, stressed or depressed; for those who struggle to balance the tasks of work and family; for those who are unable to feed their children due to poverty; for those whose children have physical, mental or emotional disabilities for those who have children they do not want for those who raise children on their own;for those who have lost a child; for those who care for the children of others; for those whose children have left home; and for those whose desire to be a mother has not been fulfilled. Bless all mothers, that their love may be deep and tender, and that they may lead their children to know and do what is good, living not for themselves alone, but for God and for others. Amen. awesomealpharetta.com
