and step back in time to 1858. Horses clip clopping through a bustling downtown and settlers exchanging goods at the local trading post. That’s just a snapshot of the cotton town Alpharetta was, way back when. On December 11, 1858, the city of Alpharetta was chartered. It was created to serve as the county seat of Milton County, and make it easier for its residents to vote, get a marriage license or draft a will. Sixth generation Alpharetta native Connie Mashburn has watched Alpharetta grow over the years. His family first settled the community in the 1830’s as farmers and once owned one of Alpharetta’s historical sites, the B.F. Shirley Home on Cumming Street. “Just about everyone farmed,” says Mashburn. “I grew up on a poultry farm selling chickens and eggs.” You can take a walk through time and explore nineteen of Alpharetta’s historical sites including the B.F. Shirley Home, and learn about the city’s past. Visit 2 South Main Street where the Courthouse of Milton County once stood and learn how Milton County got it’s name, but get ready for a debate! 29 South Main Street once hosted Alpharetta’s original business district until a fire destroyed much of the town at the turn of the century.

birthday in 2008, the Old Milton History and Genealogy Group was asked to write a book about Alpharetta’s history. Mashburn, one of the group’s members, interviewed dozens of Alpharetta natives and collected hundreds of never before seen pictures for the book, Alpharetta, Milton County - The Early Years. “We got some things down on paper and got some photos that might not have been seen otherwise. The old natives are getting older and several that we interviewed for the book are now deceased,” says Mashburn. And some of the those stories can only from “the oldtimers.” Like Civil War soldiers marching through Alpharetta in search of food after the railways were cut off. And in the field across from The Union Restaurant in Milton, Milton County’s first post office was open for business, way back when in 1834 when horses brought the mail. Mashburn knows one thing for sure, you can preserve history but you can’t stop progress. “I loved it when there were 500 people here and I love it now. Runway-Inspired: 5 Fashion-Forward Elements to Dress Up a Room People often ask

us what inspires our designs. And while it ranges from our travels to the latest movie sets to reimagining past styles for today, fashion is always a part of it. This season we saw great runway looks inspired by one of our favorite design eras: the early 1970s, a freedom- and fun-loving time with great creativity. Here’s how it translated into some elegant and unexpected elements for our rooms. 1.) Tibetan wool: Fur and shearling vests have been making appearances in all kinds of weather. We added touches to our rooms on ottomans and chairs. You can see it looking especially fun on the cushions of our spectacular new ‘70s-inspired Bastille birdcage chair. 2.) Metallic accents: Many of our storage pieces feature metallic trim and hardware that we often custom design--we see it as the jewelry of a room. And we love mixing metals by using accessories in stainless steel, bronze, and brass together, in finishes from polished to satin. Prints and wall art that incorporate metallics are another way we like to add shimmer. 3.) Leathers in fun colors: Two new leathers in

soft hues that we’ve just added to our line speak to springtime and nature’s influence on us, as well as to fashion: eucalyptus and denim. They look especially fresh paired with sofas and chairs in crisp white slipcovers, which can be done in a washable denim fabric for easier maintenance. 4.) Fashion fabrics: A sofa in classic menswear tweed has always been a look we love—it’s timeless and adds subtle texture and color to a room. This season, chambray shirts influenced us to put a soft blue chambray slipcover on our made-for-relaxing Dr. Pitt sectional. We also found a fabulous faux black patent leather…you can see it on our iconic Major chair with a satin-brass frame...a great vintage-inspired look. 5.) Amethyst & crystal accessories: Seeing how stone or crystal necklaces enhance an outfit without overpowering it reminds us how much warmth and design interest natural elements from votive holders to bookends to objets contribute. Let your personal attraction to a piece be one guide—but also look for pieces with quality—you’ve chosen beautiful well-made furniture, now your accents should reflect that. people know Wills Park for it’s ginormous playground, equestrian events and host to almost every kid sport known to Alpharetta. But the park is also home to one of Alpharetta’s best kept secrets.... the Arboretum. An Arboretum is a collection of trees that are assembled and maintained for education, research and enjoyment by the community. Located in Wills Park, the 110 acre multi-use arboretum is host to dozens of native and non-native tree species. Need some landscaping ideas? Take a stroll through the park and see if a Sycamore tree suits your fancy or if you are more of a Southern Red Oak kind of person. Another treasure of the Arboretum is the Community Garden. The garden is 100% organic and funded by donations from the community. Local students, boy scouts and girls scouts have supported the garden through fundraisers and planting projects The garden is a year-round project. Visitors can expect to see garlic in the winter months, carrots, lettuce,

snap and snow peas in the spring. Fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, cantaloupe, corn, eggplant, okra, peppers, blueberries, raspberries in the summer and beets, broccoli, cabbage, collards, kale, lettuce, mustard, peas, radishes and spinach in the fall. The Community Garden also allows “plotholders” to grow their own food. There are 37 plots at the garden available to lease on a first come first serve basis but you must be resident of Alpharetta or Milton. During the main growing season, some produce is donated to The Pantry at North Fulton Charities. Planting season is just around corner. latest restaurant, The El Felix, has opened in phase one of the new Avalon development in Alpharetta. Fry and Chef Kevin Maxey, vice president of culinary for Fry’s restaurants, together designed a “Mex-Tex” menu that plays to their Texan roots. This is Fry’s first venture outside of the city of Atlanta. “Kevin and I wanted to do food we like to eat,” Fry said. “It’s natural for a chef to want to be true to a certain culture, and likewise, we wanted to do authentic ‘Mex-Tex’ because it developed where we’re from.” In creating the menu, East Texas-natives Fry and Maxey traced the begins of the cuisine to the 1930s. Fry and Maxey’s menu includes classic Tex-Mex techniques and ingredients: dishes like tacos, enchiladas, and fajitas. The menu will also include puffy tacos, a classic staple in San Antonio Tex-Mex. 22

“They were the only ones doing those at first,” Fry said. “Then, puffy tacos made their way to Houston, and then into Austin. We want to explore and hit on all those areas.” Ford Fry’s in-house designer Elizabeth Ingram helped shape the space by designing the details inside The El Felix, and agrees that it has a more relaxed vibe than Ford’s restaurants that lie inside the Atlanta perimeter. “This one’s kinda funky,” she said. “It’s industrial and pretty casual.” Avalon is a sustainably-designed 86-acre mixeduse development located in the heart of Alpharetta. Phase One of Avalon includes 400,000 square feet of retail and restaurants, 108,000 square feet of loft office space, and luxury rental and single family homes. The City of Alpharetta is partnering with its neighbors Johns Creek, Milton, Roswell and Sandy Springs to host the North Fulton Golden Games for people 50 and older.

This year, there is even a trivia tournament for those who want to flex their brain power. For Nelson, it’s also a time to get back to one of her of her true loves.

The opening ceremony and field day will be held at Wills Park on Wednesday April 29, 2015 starting at 10am. This is the 21st year of the North Fulton Golden Games. The games will take place from the end of April through May.

“I used to be pretty good at tennis,” says Nelson. “Tennis anyone? I just need a partner,” jokes the octogenarian.

With young kids to care for, I want to stay active and fit for myself and for my family.” 82 year old Shirley Nelson says she is looking forward to signing up for her first Golden Game. 26

Games will be held at various locations in North Fulton County through the end of May. Activities will include bocce ball, swimming, tennis, golf, bowling, pickle ball, billiards, rock climbing and much more!

Tucker is excited to to show her children that fitness is a life long commitment. “It’s the new 50,” says Tucker. “I’ll drop my kids off at school for their field day, then head over to my own. 7 SIGNS YOUR CHILD MIGHT BE DEPRESSED

We tend to

associate being a child with being carefree, and not with depression. But depression and mental health challenges are far from just for adults. Children can be more emotional than adults, and a certain amount of mood swings is part of being a kid. So how can a parent tell if their child is depressed, or just a typical child with ups and downs as they navigate growing up? 1. Your child is exhibiting emotional responses that are not usual for him or her. Are they more irritable than you’ve seen them? Moping about and not wanting to play with their toys? 2. Their moods are lasting much longer than usual. or are changing far too quickly. If they were always the sort to have a quick temper tantrum but be fine an hour later, but suddenly seem upset for entire afternoons, it can be a sign your child is suffering anxiety or depression. So can incessant rapid changes in mood. 3. Their unusual behavior goes on for weeks. Depression is, if anything, persistent. Normal moods come and go. Depression goes on for weeks or months. 4. Their behavior doesn’t seem connected to circumstance. If they are sad and weepy but tell you they don’t know why, or if they are angry with a sibling who has done nothing wrong, it might be a red flag. 28

5. Your child’s emotions are affecting their functioning on a daily basis. Have teachers reported changes in their focus or ability? Do they seem uninterested in their hobbies or friends, are they socially withdrawing? Seem oversensitive to rejection? 6. They are using a depressed perspective and phrases of doom and gloom. Children can be dramatic, naturally. But pay attention for changes in what your child talks about. Are they telling you that nobody likes them even when their friends are calling them? Then look for expressions of low confidence, such as ‘I am no good at anything’, or ‘nothing good ever happens to me’. 7. Your child is exhibiting regressed behavior. Are they suddenly whining, clinging, or otherwise acting less independent than usual? Are they sucking their thumb again, or even using baby talk? Wetting the bed again for the first time in years? consensus Wall Street strategists, the U.S. stock market should rise another 10% in 2015 to around 2200 on the S&P 500 Index. Following are five ideas to enhance your portfolio for the year. 1) 1.15% One Year CD; It’s always nice to make something extra on your safe money. One year keeps you short term liquid and is a competitive sweet spot in yield with banks seeking deposits. FDIC insurance covers up to $250K per account. My favorites at the time of writing are: Nationwide Bank (nationwide.com/onlinebanking) with a 1.14% one year CD yield.; CIT Bank (bankoncit.com) with a 1.15% yield is a large Livingston, NJ outfit.; BankDirect out of Dallas, TX has a 1.17% yield. 2) European Currency Hedged ETF, With the European Central Bank promising to implement quantitative easing to impede further deflationary pressures, European stocks could become beneficiaries of easy money policy. Wisdom Tree’s HEDJ, and iShare’s HEZU are currency hedged ETFs capture the upside of theEuro-region stocks without the euro to dollar currency headwind. 3) Google Inc.(symbols: Googl, Goog); Google lagged the market sorely in 2014. I was driving

home recently when I saw a familiar scene: a dog running loose. I pulled over and was able to coax him to me. He was a beautiful and boisterous black lab. I was happy to see he had a collar, but my heart sank when I realized that he didn’t have any identification tags on. The energetic cutie bounded all over my car, found a tennis ball from under the seat and tried to get me to play fetch with him. I knew that someone must be missing this fun dog! I drove him to the closest veterinary hospital and luckily this story ended happily: they used a universal scanner, detected a microchip, and his owner arrived to pick him up 20 minutes later. There are several lost pet websites listing dozens of dogs and cats missing around Milton recently. The local shelters take in hundreds of pets each month! Sadly, awesomealpharetta.com

only about 25% of dogs and 5% of cats that enter shelters as strays are reunited with their owners. Many don’t think about microchipping their cat, but cats especially need them. It is 20 times more likely that your lost cat will be found if it has a microchip.

Keeping a collar on your pet with an ID tag (the pet’s name, your phone number +/- address) is the easiest way for your dog or cat to be found, but often collars can slip off. Some collars can be dangerous for outdoor cats, and “breakaway” collars fall off. ID tags can become worn and unreadable. Every pet should have a microchip as a back up form of identification.

5)There are different types of microchips and scanners. Some only read certain types, but most veterinarians and shelters now have a “universal scanner” that can read all of them.

Microchips 101 1) A microchip is a tiny electronic transponder the size of a grain of rice. It is activated by a scanner that transmits radiowaves to the chip. The chip uses no batteries, and is designed to have a lifespan of 25 years. 2)The microchip is not a GPS tracker. A unique identification number appears on the scanner, and your pet’s information can be looked up so they can be reunited with you. There is a database designed by American Animal Hospital Association that makes it easier to look up most ID numbers. 3)A veterinarian or trained veterinary technician needs to implant the microchip. It is a simple injection and takes seconds. It is no more painful than getting a vaccination. Some prefer to have it done if the pet is under anesthesia for other reasons, but that is not necessary. The veterinarian will provide you with paperwork or a website to register the

4)Register your pet’s information! It is estimated that only 1/2 of microchips are registered. Keep it updated if you move or if your pet has a new owner.

6)Have your veterinarian “check the chip” at the wellness visit each year. That will ensure the scanner and chip are working and in place, and help you remember to update your registration. Your vet can keep a record of your pet’s microchip number. 7)Whenever you find a lost pet without ID tags get them to a veterinarian or shelter as soon as possible so they can be checked with a universal scanner for a microchip. 8)Have any new dog or cat you adopt from a rescue or a breeder checked to see if they already have a microchip. Hopefully you will never lose your beloved pet, but if you do, a microchip can help make sure that your story has a happy ending, too. , if you want to perform at your best… you need the right tools. Golf is no different! To get the most out of your golf swing, it is essential that you have consistency throughout your entire set of clubs. You do not have to be a great player to be a good candidate for a club fitting session. If you have a repeatable golf swing, a club fitting session is the best way, regardless of your skill level, to ensure that you are using a set of clubs designed specifically for your unique swing. It is important to remember that club fitting isn’t a magic bullet. The goal of golf club fitting is to help reduce the severity of the faults in your golf swing, minimize your shot dispersion and put the golf club in the best possible position at impact to strike the ball solidly and with accuracy. The end result creates more consistency in a player’s golf swing and increased opportunity to shoot lower 46

scores. Because there are so many golf clubs on the market, start the process by trying several different brands and styles of golf clubs. You may want to choose clubs which feel more comfortable and visually appealing to you as an individual. A club that looks appealing at address can inspire confidence over each shot. Don’t become preoccupied with one particular brand just because your favorite tour player uses them! Club fitting is about finding what works best for you. Once you feel comfortable with your choice of clubs; it’s a good idea to focus on a particular area of your golf game when considering a club fitting session. Perhaps, start with your irons at one fitting session or narrow the focus to a specific club/ clubs like your driver, fairway woods or wedges. PEDAL THROUGH ALPHARETTA By Lisa Lossie Jim Texter loved exploring the roads of Michigan on his bicycle. But when he moved to Georgia 17 years ago, his hobby took a hit. “I came to Georgia and it was dangerous, the only time I would get out on my bike was Saturday and Sunday mornings at 6am before the traffic came out.” Now President of Bike Alpharetta, he and others are working to change that. “The City of Alpharetta is very bike friendly now,” says Texter. But still not bike friendly enough according to Bike Alpharetta. Three years ago, Jackie Tyson founded the not for profit organization to work with community and city leaders to advocate a safe environment for bicycle use in the City of Alpharetta. Bike Alpharetta focuses on using awareness and education to support city leaders and planners in an advisory capacity to ensure that all types of bike riders can have fun and be safe.

Stop at stop signs, signal with your arms and put lights on your bike.

“My dream would be for Alpharetta to be bike friendly so people are not afraid to go out and bike,” says Texter.

“Just remember, the person riding the bike is someone’s mother or father, daughter or son,” says Tyson. “So please be courteous, it’s not going to delay you.”

hearing about essential oils? My journey with essential oils began 11 years ago when my doctor recommended that we use the oil of Oregano on the soles of our feet to boost our immune systems. To this day my boys, ages 11 and 9, have not needed an antibiotic. Neither one has had strep throat nor ear infections. We do strive to keep a healthy life style, but I am sure the oil of Oregano had a lot to do with this result. Essential oils are extracted from various parts plants or trees.
