SUMMER IN ALPHARETTA EQUALS Food Trucks, dining on patios, fireworks, farm-fresh food, art and music. We had a lot of fun putting this issue together for you, but not as much fun as you’ll have around town these next couple of months.

President CHRIS SMITH

Jennifer Mehall writes for us on page 18 about the state of the local farm-to-table movement and the restaurants who do the best job at sourcing local food in North Fulton. While very few restaurants are entirely “farmto-table,” we offer up several names of those who do a pretty darn good job of it.

Vice President, Publisher REGINA GULICK Contributing Writers JENNIFER MEHALL, CLAIRE MURPHY Administrative Assistant SARAH MABAL

Music is everywhere you look during the summer. On pages 14-15, we give you the lineups at Matilda’s Cottage Under the Pines and The Velvet Note, highlight the upcoming Dixie Chicks Concert at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre, and list the upcoming shows at Chukkar Farm. The highlight of every summer in Alpharetta is the extravagant Fourth of July Fireworks display at Wills Park. Bring a blanket or chairs and enjoy the spectacular show, free to the public with ample free parking. Read the details on page 16. Hang on to this copy of Alpharetta Magazine because we’ve got an extensive Restaurant Guide and Events Calendar that will get you through the end of August. Don’t blink! It’ll be ”back-to-school” before we know it. Enjoy these “lazy” days of summer. And always, live locally! Warm Regards,

Regina

ARBORETUMS by Claire Murphy

A

Arbor-what? WHAT IS AN ARBORETUM? An arboretum is a collection of trees assembled and maintained for education, research and enjoyment. The mission of the Alpharetta Arboretum, Inc. is to connect people to nature for their education and enjoyment by engaging the community through horticultural demonstration, ecological education and the stewardship of botanically rich places. Alpharetta offers several public arboretums for us to enjoy. They’re located at Cogburn Road Park, Wills Park, Brooke Street Park, and Webb Bridge Park. Additionally, there is a community garden together with the arboretum at Wills Park. Here is some basic info about each so that you can decide the best time for you to visit: BROOKE STREET PARK ARBORETUM This arboretum features a variety of springtime flowering trees, which are a staple in landscapes and used as ornamental or specimen plantings. This five-acre passive park in downtown Alpharetta is located just behind City Hall. Enjoy the winding concrete path, a beautifully landscaped stream, open lawn, Veterans War Memorial and a small reading garden. WEBB BRIDGE PARK ARBORETUM Enjoy a plethora of natural beauty, trees and flora that are native to Georgia, upland hardwood forest, conifer forest and trees typically found in moist ravines and bottomland. Walk the mile and a half trail through the park to spot trees that represent all three of Georgia’s geographic regions: the mountains, the Piedmont and the coastal plain.

COGBURN ROAD PARK ARBORETUM This passive park hosts a collection of trees functioning as a living museum that can be used for education, research and enjoyment. Relax in the large, open play area, take a stroll on the .2 mile walking path, let the children enjoy the playground or pack a lunch to enjoy the picnic pavilions. Interestingly, you will also find a rainwater collection barrel demonstration---which is used to water the trees and other plants at the park. WILLS PARK ARBORETUM The natural setting and beauty of many native and non-native tree species is showcased in Wills Park, a 110-acre multi-use park near downtown. Wander through the park on the walking trail to see many street, border and accent trees that offer an educational perspective on the wide choices of trees suited for planting in the urban landscape. ALPHARETTA COMMUNITY GARDEN Visit Wills Park to experience an active organic community garden---it’s an organic educational garden where Alpharetta volunteer gardeners come together to learn, teach and share their gardening experience with each other, the community and visitors on how to grow and eat healthy fresh and delicious organic vegetables, herbs and fruits on a year-round basis. Local students from the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts have supported the community garden with fundraisers, plantings and building projects. Milton High School students have completed several science experiments in the garden plots. So, visit our arboretums to learn, see, hear, receive, experience, explore, feel, smell, touch and taste the best of nature’s kiss on our town. For more information, check out the Alpharetta Arboretum facebook page or visit awesomealpharetta.com.

HEALTH

SHINE THIS SUMMER : AVOID SUNBURNS

P

Provided by Northside Hospital Cancer Institute

GETTING SUNBURNED DURING a family vacation in your youth can lead to skin cancer later in life. That’s why 20 minutes before you run outside to enjoy the summer, do this: Put on a hat and apply sun block with a sun protection factor (SPF) 30 or greater. Sunburns are linked to skin cancer and by wearing a hat, longsleeved clothes and applying sunblock, you will help protect your skin from harm. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. Most cases of melanoma, the deadliest kind of skin cancer, are caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light. Melanoma spreads rapidly and can be life-threatening if untreated. Early detection: If caught early, melanoma is curable, so early detection is crucial. The number of skin cancers diagnosed every year in the U.S. exceeds the total of all other types of cancer combined. Recognizing the risks: Pay attention to any changes in size, shape and color of spots on the skin. Look for moles that are

big or have a strange shape. Also note if they vary in color or change with time. If you spot anything unusual, contact your doctor. More than just sunscreen: In addition to sunscreen, protect your skin from the sun and avoid indoor tanning salons. Stay in the shade, especially during midday hours. Wear dark clothing that covers your arms and legs. Protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB rays. More than 1 million new cases of skin cancer are caught every year. Don’t be one of them. Northside Hospital Cancer Institute hosts skin cancer screenings during the summer to help you understand your risk for developing this deadly disease. From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 20 Northside Hospital Alpharetta at 3400 Old Milton Parkway, Bldg. C, Suite 100/110. (first floor) For more information, go to northside.com/skincancerscreenings or call 404-531-4444 to reserve a spot.

TICK TALK

BY KEVIN ALPHA Kennel Master Crabapple Beds & Bones

THE TIME IS HERE AGAIN for those pesky critters that love to hitch a ride on our pets for a blood meal. We are all familiar with the battle against fleas. Thank goodness for the more modern topical and internal medications that aid in controlling the flea population on our pets and in our homes. Then there is the problem of ticks. Many of the topicals aid in killing the ticks as well, but we hate to find these bugs any where near us or our pets, and The Brown Dog Tick can live and develop in your home without ever leaving as long as they have a host, Your pet!! These unfavorable bugs can feed on birds, mammals, amphibians and reptiles. Ticks cause various diseases in pets as well as people, but did you know that a single tick can cause paralysis in your K-9 friend! Tick bite paralysis is caused by a potent toxin that is released through the saliva of certain species of ticks. This toxin is released into the blood stream of the pet when the tick latches on for a blood meal. The toxin directly affects the nervous system causing paralysis.

Tick bite paralysis usually occurs in areas where seasonal temperatures stay consistently warmer, such as the southern states where ticks may be present throughout the year. Symptoms vary, but can include regurgitation of food, lethargy and weakness in the hind limbs eventually leading to paralysis. The treatment is usually simple. Remove the tick, although every pet is different and treatments may vary. Always see your veterinarian if you notice any abnormalities. The best defense is to check your pet[s] all over on a daily basis. Focus around the eyes and in or around the ears. Tweezers work well to remove a tick. Get as close to the skin as possible with the tweezers. Pull the tick off. The goal is to try and remove its mouth.Clean the area where the tick was with peroxide or some form of antiseptic. It doesn’t hurt to put a topical antibiotic on the area for a few days as well. It is also important to do a self-check. Lyme disease in people can have very severe consequences. A tick bite can easily go undetected. Transference can occur between humans and animals.Beaware and on the lookout, and have a tick free summer!!

Appleseed Collective•June 25, 2016 A four-piece Americana band that’s toured these United States since 2010, serving up songs new and old—barn-burners, old soul jazz, airy mood pieces, bluesy digressions—to crowds hungry for more. Their music is a rich Dixie-Gypsy roots-music mélange with a modern twist, a long-simmering stew of old-time, ragtime, and bluegrass constantly refreshed—like the Melting Pot itself—with immigrant sounds and international spices. Villain Family•July 2, 2016 Enjoy high energy soul country at it’s gritty

Legendary Jazz Guitarist Larry Coryell•June 24 As one of the pioneers of jazz-rock — perhaps the pioneer in the ears of some — Larry Coryell deserves a special place in the history books. He brought what amounted to a nearly alien sensibility to jazz electric guitar playing in the 1960s, a hard-edged, cutting tone, phrasing and note-bending that owed as much to blues, rock and even country as it did to earlier, smoother bop influences. For a time, he rose with other legends such as Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, and Eric Clapton and for decades, he has still been able to make his mark in music by way of the jazz & fusion world. 7:30pm

BY JENNIFER MEHALL WHAT DOES IT REALLY MEAN WHEN YOUR FAVORITE DINING ESTABLISHMENT CALLS THEMSELVES “FARM-TO-TABLE?”

LOCAL FLAVOR F PHOTO COURTESY FOUNDATION SOCIAL EATERY

IT’S FRIDAY NIGHT. YOU DON’T FEEL UP TO COOKING, BUT ARE LOOKING FOR A FRESH, HEALTHY MEAL FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY OR DATE. What is so special about the meals you’ll find at many Alpharetta establishments is the farm-totable freshness! The term “farm-to-table” has been around for many years and could be considered tired, and worn out. But a few local restaurants celebrate this like a happy, seasoned marriage: Fresh ingredients and great food! Farm-to-table dining began as a backlash against the industrialization, commoditization, and centralization of our food production system. The farm-to-table “movement” first began in the 1970’s with the public’s recognition of the benefits of organic vegetables. By the end of the 1990’s the initiative slowly picked up steam and moved beyond vegetables to meats. First, grass-fed beef. Then, free-range chicken. Later, pastured pork. The production and consumption of lesser known livestock species soon began to gain momentum. These days, “farm-to-table” is a fairly ambiguous concept used in a variety of different ways in restaurants’ marketing, as well as in their kitchens. While some sales and marketing executives and journalists continue to use the term, most chefs and independent restaurant owners have stopped. “Farm-to-table” is an improperly and overly used adjective to describe various levels of food items on a restaurant’s menu which are sourced from local farms and markets. Very, very few restaurants are purely, entirely “farm-to-table.” Any restaurant using a single garnishing flower picked from outside can

now call themselves, “farm-to-table.”

However, we are happy to offer up a handful of fabulous local restaurants in North Fulton that do a pretty darn good job of it: Table & Main, Osteria Mattone, Foundation Social Eatery, Milton’s Cuisine & Cocktails, Vin25, Secreto, La Casa Italian Grill, South Main Kitchen, Anabelle’s Table and Peach & Pork Chop. These restaurants seem to us to go out of their way to source regional cuisine using locally grown, organic ingredients from the restaurants’ own gardens, as well as from local farms and markets. Anabelle’s Table is a new restaurant in Alpharetta, off Windward Parkway. The owners Scott and Anabelle Parry’s love of good food had them sourcing local purveyors the minute they got to Alpharetta. Satisfied that the farm-to-table movement-- with sustainable and environmentally conscious farming practices-- was alive and well in Georgia, they decided to open Anabelle’s Table. Their passion for the business is evident in all the details from the homemade mixers to on premise baking, open kitchen and flawless service. They show their dedication to the consumer, farmers, growers and environment by offering seasonal menus that are fluid and changeable to optimize your choices. Ryan Pernice, Owner of Table & Main and Osteria Mattone in downtown Roswell explains, “We make every possible effort to source through local farms. In fact, our Executive Chef Woolery Back (“Woody”) is the President of the board of the Roswell Farmer’s Market.” Farm-to-table is not just a restaurant philosophy, but is beginning to evolve as a lifestyle choice for many.

PHOTO COURTESY SCOOPOTP.COM AND ANABELLE’S TABLE “Thanks to the many food television series, social media, Pinterest and blogs, consumers are more educated and excited about what’s going on with their restaurant fare. They’re also more savvy and want to know exactly what they’re being served,” explained Chef Woody. At Foundation Social Eatery in East Roswell, Chef Mel Toledo offers, “If you’re a really good restaurant and really good at what you do, then you’re going to try to source from local farmers and use fresh food from local markets as often as you can.” He goes on to explain how the term “farm-to-table” has been abused by some to simply mean, “We’re healthy!” When, in reality, it is much, much more than that. “The use of locally grown food is a win/win/win for the restaurants, the patrons and the local farming industry…not just a ‘healthy choice.” Toledo uses seasonal ingredients from local farms like Buckeye Creek Farms in Woodstock. He frequents the local farmer’s markets in the area. He works with Sweet Apple and Artisans Market Owner Christy Hood who fills his wish list of farm foods. He elaborates, “How can I use in-season ingredients and make them shine? How can I treat an ingredient differently to get a different texture-- like his menu item which turns cauliflower into a scallop dish with almonds, apple slices and cauliflower puree. One thing that Chuck Staley knew when he opened Peach & The Porkchop is that today’s dining guests want to know exactly where their food is coming from. In designing the menu, Staley researched the local farms that could provide hormone-free, all natural foods and would fit into his North meets South menu. “We found the best local farms with the most responsible practices to supply us with fresh eggs, produce and meats… not only for our adult menus, but for our children’s menus as well,” reflects Chuck. “At many restaurants, the adult menu is filled with garden-fresh ingredients, while the kids are given a choice between frozen chicken fingers or pre-packaged Mac & Cheese. One of our focal points at Peach & The Porkchop is to provide the same high quality ingredients

for both adults and children. There are more than 20 different farm fresh dishes on our children’s menu,” he adds. Local farms which provide these ingredients to our best restaurants are all located within a 25-mile radius of North Fulton and run by local Georgians who take pride in the products they produce. Some of these farms include Circle-A Farms in Cumming, Fat Land Farms in Roswell, Morning Glory Farms in Cedartown, Maxwell Farms in Dallas, Georgia, Gazaway Farms in Cumming and Buckeye Creek Farms in Woodstock. Chef Derek Dollar at Milton’s Cuisine & Cocktails in Alpharetta sources his ingredients not only from local farms but from the restaurant’s own “Milton’s Acre.” The acre behind this local, fine-dining establishment provides fresh, in-season produce year-round. Dollar says, “People are doing ‘hyper-local’ dining, choosing eateries that have fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. The “Garden Dinner Series” at Milton’s is a local showcase for diners looking for a special ‘farm-to-table’ experience including dining right in the garden itself. Many different varieties of heirloom fruits, vegetables and herbs from the restaurant’s own backyard are used to create a family-style, memorable four-course meal with wine pairings and desserts. The newest ‘farm-to-table’ restaurant in Alpharetta is Secreto. Chef Boyd – prior Chef of Milton’s Cuisine and pioneer of Milton’s Acre— says, “Responsible chefs will always use fresh ingredients from nearby farm sources. The demand for higher-quality ingredients is strong and growing. As long as local chefs are up to the challenge then restaurant guests and the farming community will benefit.” Milton’s Cuisine & Cocktails•miltonscuisine.com Foundation Social Eatery•foundationatl.com Table & Main•tableandmain.com Osteria Mattone•osteriamattone.com La Casa Italian Grill•lacasaitaliangrill.com Secreto•secretokitchen.com South Main Kitchen•southmainkitchen.com Anabelle’s Table•anabellestable.com Peach & the Porkchop•peachandtheporkchop.com

ALPHARETTA REAL ESTATE

MARKET UPDATE & SALES

Don’t Go it Alone. Buying or Selling Real Estate is Best Left to the Professionals

A home is the often most expensive purchase we make in our lifetime. It’s a serious transaction with significant financial and emotional ramifications for the parties involved, and having proper representation is critical. In 2012, according to the National Association of Realtors, a full 89 percent of buyers used a real estate agent, and so did 88 percent of sellers. Realtor® representation during a real estate transaction is important for both buyers and sellers. Why? Complex Regulations Every home is different, and laws change every year and vary from state to state. Generally speaking, people purchase a new home every 7-10 years, and a lot can — and usually does — change between transactions. Realtors® are immersed in real estate, and they must stay current with all the updates in regulations, laws, contracts and practices. Save Time Browsing online is a terrific way to start a home search — in fact, almost 90 percent of people start their home search online. But when it’s time to buy, knowing all the pros and cons of a property can help you make the right decision. Realtors® live and breathe real estate, and they can share information about a home that you wouldn’t otherwise know. For example, they can tell you about the perils of polybutylene piping (a plumbing material that’s prone to bursting), or the concerns with FRT plywood (a roofing material that can spontaneously combust in higher temperatures, like those in attics). Pricing and Selling a Home There are lots of sites where you can view price estimates for your home before you list it for sale, but you take a risk using them. In some markets, online estimates can be off by as much as 35 percent, and they often rely on tax records and data that can be as old as 6-12 months. Realtors® know the local market, have access to the freshest sale data, and can price your house in line with the market to maximize your earnings. Contracts and Negotiations Finding the right home is the fun part. Then the real work begins. Today’s contracts can be 50 pages long. Realtors® can help you navigate these complex documents and craft an attractive offer. Plus, when it comes to negotiation, your Realtor® is your advocate and can bring an objective voice to the situation.

DIXIE CHICKS IN ALPHARETTA Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre•Sunday,•August 14th, 2016 at 7:00PM•Ticket Price: $20.50 TO $40.50

Innovators, renegades, villains, mothers, influencers

and music superstars, Dixie Chicks, announced today a return to touring with their upcoming DCX MMXVI World Tour. The multiple Grammy Award®–winning and multi-platinum selling band will kick off their highly anticipated North American tour, on June 1, 2016 at the Riverbend Music Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. DCX MMXVI World Tour will visit over 40 cities throughout the U.S. and Canada with dates lined up in New York City, Los Angeles, Toronto, Chicago, Vancouver, Washington DC, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Boston and more. The North American leg of the DCX MMXVI World Tour immediately follows the group’s previously announced European tour shows. Since their first album, the music of the Dixie Chicks have stirred emotions in fans across the world making them one of the most

biggest and most influential bands of our time. Not just “big for a country band” or “big for a big female band,” the Dixie Chicks are a multi-platinum selling act in North America, Europe and Australia. They are one of a mere handful of acts with multiple albums achieving “diamond” status (meaning sales over 10 million copies) – both WIDE OPEN SPACES (1998) and FLY (1999) hit that stratospheric landmark – and over the years have sold over 30 million albums worldwide and won thirteen Grammy Awards. Their on-stage reputation has helped them sell over $100 million worth of concert tickets while outspoken songs like “Goodbye, Earl” and “Not Ready To Make Nice” made it clear that this power trio played by nobody’s rules. The Dixie Chicks have grown from a band into a cultural force becoming the biggest selling female band of all time in the U.S. dixiechicks.com

God our Creator, we pray: Almighty God, bless our nation and make it true to the ideas of freedom and justice and brotherhood for all who make it great. Guard us from war, from fire and wind, from compromise, fear, confusion. Be close to our president and our statesmen; give them vision and courage, as they ponder decisions affecting peace and the future of the world. Make me more deeply aware of my heritage; realizing not only my rights but also my duties and responsibilities as a citizen. Make this great land and all its people know clearly Your will, that they may fulfill the destiny ordained for us in the salvation of the nations, and the restoring of all things in Christ. Amen
