THE GIVING TREE

JUST INSIDE THE ENTRANCE to the new Milton Library, the beautiful 8 foot tall steel Giving Tree fabricated by local artist Glenn Levent commands one’s attention. The Giving Tree acknowledges individuals and organizations who have made financial contributions to the Friends of the Milton Library’s efforts to enrich a wide range of library programs. Donors purchase an engraved leaf or rock, which highlights their support of the library for generations.

They appreciate the library’s architecture, the adjacent Friends Barn and above all the rural heritage it all symbolizes. The origin of William “W.J.” and Crista Albertson’s interest in all things rural dates back to their youth near Moline, Illinois where Crista’s family operates a farm. The farmstead features a large “scientific barn,” which had the latest revolutionary construction techniques available at the time of its construction in the mid-1800s. The barn was built by the VP of the state board of agriculture who helped lead the founding of the University of Illinois in 1867. Famed blacksmith and plow maker John Deere tested some of his early inventions on the farm, which was near the John

About 7 years ago, W.J. and Crista extensively rehabilitated the stunning structure and today it proudly gives testimony to its historic past --- just as our library reminds us of our community’s agrarian heritage.
Spotlight Donor: The Spolan Family If you spend any time in the library, it is likely you will run into one of the Spolans. As a family of voracious readers, Keith, Tara and their two children claim to live in the library. In addition to supporting the library through their legacy of a silver leaf, Tara teaches the Silly Science children’s program, while Keith, Benjamin and Livia roam through the Milton Library stacks for something new to consume.

The FOML library foyer bookstore has been converted to a self-service store and is now open daily for your convenience. If you find a book you want to purchase, please pay for it by putting your money into the locked box on the wall. Books in the store are chosen from popular adult book donations available in the barn. Children’s books and other genres are now exclusively in the barn and may be purchased during our weekly Wednesday afternoon sales or our big 2nd Saturday monthly sales. Our wonderful group of dedicated volunteers continues to organize the books in the barn so that you can find exactly what you want. We are grateful for all of their effort and invite you to stop by during our Wednesday or Saturday sales to see their progress.

Spotlight donor: Sally Rich-Kolb

Sally Rich-Kolb has remained active in the Crabapple community for over 28 years, starting with her first shop when Crabapple was the Antique Mecca of the South. She has gone on to help develop two festivals, the Crabapple Community Association, and various other events. With a silver rock, Sally chose to honor SALLY RICH-KOLB Emory and Virginia Reeves, whom she remembers fondly as being kind to all, passionate for all things Crabapple and full of life!
Spotlight donor: Peyton & Megan Jamison
According to the AJC, Virginia Reeves was the unofficial first lady of Crabapple. She and her husband Emory, who was called the mayor of the North Fulton community, had two businesses in the area and supported many local events,
Peyton and Megan Jamison have been committed volunteers since they first met as students at Auburn University. As Miss Auburn, Megan was the official hostess for the university while Peyton was active in student government. Today Peyton is President of the Crabapple Community Association and is Chairman of the City of Milton Planning Commission. They both have volunteered many hours working in the Milton Library Friends Bookstore. Megan was on the Community Public Art Panel that selected the beautiful statues and sculpture that adorn the exterior and rotunda of the library. Peyton sees the library as a place where people can gather and get away from the pressures of daily life. He appreciates its small town feel. The Jamisons were pleased to contribute a gold leaf to the Friends Giving Tree. They know that their three children are destined to be serious library patrons.
