a letter from the PUBLISHER Hi there. Thank you for picking up a copy of the premiere issue of Roswell Magazine! We’re so grateful to our sponsors: Roswell Convention & Visitors Bureau and Roswell Inc for making this first issue possible. What a jam-packed issue we have for you! The main focus of this first issue is two-fold: restaurants and weddings. Coincidentally, these go hand-in-hand; and we hope you choose local establishments when you’re planning your special occasions. Roswell Inc --- a huge supporter of the local restaurant scene in Roswell – provided us with an amazing map and color coded listings of 80+ local restaurants on page 24. We are excited to tell you that the Official Chip of Roswell is the Grit Chip, created by local restauranteur Sean McDonough and The Roswell Tap. Read all about it on page 8. Marry me? Roswell Convention & Visitors Bureau ensured that our readers had up-to-date information on 30+ local special events venues. Learn about the numerous wedding event facilities beginning on page 20. THE OFFICIAL CHIP OF ROSWELL By Regina Gulick
“Now therefore, I, Jere Wood, Mayor of the City of Roswell do hereby proclaim that Jeff Foxworthy’s Grit Chips Shall be the official chip of the City of Roswell and encourage all of our citizens to try them and tell their friends.” November 12, 2014
It
started as a bar snack at The Roswell Tap, but everything changed when comedian Jeff Foxworthy took a bite of his first Grit Chip. “As soon as I tasted it, I’m like, ‘Oh, my gosh, this is great.’ I need to tell the word it’s great,” Foxworthy told 11Alive’s Jennifer Leslie.
Photos of Jeff Foxworthy by Haigwood Studios, Roswell
Sean McDonough, the owner of The Roswell Tap, met Foxworthy a couple of years ago and invited him to taste his grit chips. Now Foxworthy refers to McDonough as his “Yankee buddy.” “It’s been a dream. It was a chance meeting. It was a gift.” McDonough said. Now they’re a team, turning comfort food into a brand called Jeff Foxworthy’s™ Southern Creations with four flavors of Grit Chips now on the market. “People ask me to describe it. It’s kind of between a Tostito and a Frito. Very thin, very crispy. It’s just different.” There are more “Southern creations” to come, including dips like barbecue humus and one made with collard greens and smoked bacon. Also, they’ve introduced other salty snacks like country kettle corn and smoked pork rinds. Foxworthy said Grit Chips are one more thing to love about the South, but he’s hoping they have wide appeal. 8
roswellinc.org • visitroswellga.com
“Is it a Southern thing? Yeah. But is it a Southern thing? No,” Foxworthy said. “It’s kind of like the Redneck jokes. When I first came up with them I thought we had exclusive rights to Rednecks. Then I traveled the country and went, ‘Oh, my gosh, they’re everywhere.’ Hopefully it’s the same thing with the Grit Chip.” “I am excited to be a part of this,” said Foxworthy, who is a resident of North Fulton County. “If there was any kind of food I’d put my name on it would be a grit chip.” Foxworthy opened his speech at the announcement party at The Roswell Tap with a story about how his career was based on ideas and successes that no one saw coming, adding Grit Chips are a great idea. Grit Chips are similar to tortilla chips with a grittier texture and taste making them a very unique and tasty salty snack. During the official chip designation event, Mayor Jere Wood said the chips were the “Greatest invention since apple pie,” and called Foxworthy the “perfect spokesman for the product line.” After going through food science and manufacturing analysis, The Roswell Food Group selected an 80 year family-owned chip manufacturer to produce four flavors of chips. They are served and sold daily at The Roswell Tap and marketed through national grocery and club store chains; and through exclusive promotions with sports and entertainment companies. “The product development has been completed; and our manufacturing partners are the best in the business. Now it’s time to find the right distribution partners and bring Jeff Foxworthy’s original Girt Chips to the rest of the world,” McDonough said. About the Roswell Tap Understanding the need for a relaxing, neighborhood destination in beautiful historic Roswell, The Roswell Tap founders focused on the space first beginning in late summer of 2010. Founders Sean McDonough, Michael Rozmajzl and Ron Harvey, have worked to make The Tap a unique and pleasurable experience from the moment you enter until you leave. About the Roswell Food Group RFG was started like a lot of companies. One night a group locallifepublishing.com

of like-minded friends were sitting around the table enjoying a few adult beverages, swapping stories about some of the great foods they enjoy. One of them, a restaurant owner, got to wondering how this group could introduce some of these great tastes to the rest of the world, and presto! The stars aligned. The heavens and Earth began to move. And soon the little group of friends had a really big idea. Start a breakthrough new Southern-inspired food group, with just one goal in mind: Find, incubate, and bring to market the most exciting, freshest tasting snacks, sundries and food products so folks can enjoy these great tastes - and good times - with their families and loved ones. Sounded simple. So they put together a dream team of industry, sales and marketing professionals and they hit the ground running with one of the products they talked about on that very first night around the table.

mac mcgee irish authenticity By Amanda Turano Photos by Darleen Prem Photography
In every small town
in Ireland there exists the pub, short for public house. Pubs are the social backbone to a neighborhood and home to good company, good conversation and good food and drink. Welcome friends new and old, to your true neighborhood public house in the heart of historic Roswell. Shake off the winter chill at Mac McGee’s, whose second location opened in March of 2013, on Canton Street in historic downtown Roswell. This pub seemingly transports you to Ireland with ornate woodwork, rich stained glass and even numbered pews that were rescued from a church fire. All of these décor details were imported directly from Ireland during the owner’s numerous trips to the emerald isle. Whether you chose to whet your whistle and unwind with a drink from their extensive beer or whiskey selections, or choose from the expanded craft cocktail list, you will not be disappointed. The bar features 32 beers on tap, 28 in a bottle, 150 + whiskeys plus specially designed craft cocktails. Cheer on your favorite Irish and European sports matches at the bar on the big screen or duck into a “snug” for a more intimate seat. These decorative wooded booths are partially enclosed in keeping with the historical tradition of hiding away priests and women who frequented olde pubs to drink discretely.

RESTAURANT PROFILE: AQUA BLUE By Nicole Hunnicutt
Aqua blue debuted
on the Roswell dining scene over 13 years ago, bringing chef-driven, global cuisine to Atlanta’s northern suburbs. Long-time chef de cuisine Kien Sam joined co-founder John C. Metz, Jr. as an operating partner in 2013, leading updates to the menu, bar and private dining. From steaks and chops to deliciously prepared seafood and premium sushi, the restaurant impresses with variety and the freshest, seasonal ingredients available. In addition to adding weekday lunch service last year, Sam has focused on fresh seafood and sushi prepared daily, along with hand-cut steaks cooked to perfection. “Our guests have come to expect affordable luxury when dining with us,” said Metz. “A quality meal, extraordinary service and an inviting atmosphere – we make sure they consistently receive all of these elements when dining at Aqua blue.” To complement the cuisine, the restaurant boasts an extensive, global wine list with wines offered by the bottle and glass, as well as selections of “endangered species,” limited releases or vintages that are no longer available. Traditional cocktails, along with a selection of martinis and sake, await from the bar. 30
There's always something special going on at Aqua blue. Each Sunday, any bottle of wine in the house is available for half price. Tuesdays bring $1 nigiri and sashimi, $5 large sake and $3 Japanese beers. Thursday is Ladies Night with $5 specialty cocktails and $5 glasses of wine all day. “The overwhelming support of our loyal diners and friends has allowed us to serve our affordable and unique neighborhood dining experience for over 13 years now, and we plan to continue to surprise and delight them for many years to come,” said Sam. In addition to an unforgettable dining experience, Aqua blue is focused on being the best event and special venue for parties and gatherings in the Roswell and Alpharetta neighborhoods. The restaurant's banquet facilities, which offers a beautiful setting of cascading curtain walls, rich bamboo floors and soaring ceilings, can hold up to 300 guests. The updated patio, with colorful landscaping and heaters for the chilly months, is perfect for large parties any time of year. The former sushi bar is now a wine room for intimate gatherings or larger parties. Aqua blue is located at 1564 Holcomb Bridge Road in Roswell. The restaurant serves lunch Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and dinner daily from 4 to 10 p.m. For more information, call 770-643-8886 or visit aquablueatl.com. roswellinc.org • visitroswellga.com
Restaurant profile: THE MILL KITCHEN & BAR
In the South,
we are kept up at night remembering our grandmother’s fried chicken, our mother’s biscuits and gravy, the taste of a peach fresh off the tree in July and the smell of boiled peanuts as we pass by a roadside stand after a day of fishing with our grandfather. We crave and dream about our food, attaching it to memories of childhood, friends and family. We are taught a great meal is not about the food and drink we consume, it is an emotional experience bonding us to it forever. The MILL KITCHEN AND BAR, a quintessential Southern neighborhood restaurant, is a down-to-earth spot, where the casual vibe is heightened by the mouth-watering cuisine, the culinary inspired cocktails, the large selection of craft beers and the thoughtfully selected wine list. Whether a guest prefers the well-appointed dining room, the comfortable bar or the sizeable patio complete with a fireplace, it will be a gathering spot for those who want to conjure up their favorite memories and provide a place to make new ones. The Mill Kitchen and Bar is the joint venture of brothers Scott and Randy McCray. The brothers are veteran entrepreneus. The two have helped redefine the concept of the American neighborhood bar with two locations of McCray’s Tavern in Smyrna and Lawrenceville and the iconic Cosmo Lava Bar neslocallifepublishing.com
tled in the Midtown skyline. Coming in early 2015, their new seafood concept restaurant HOOK LINE AND SCHOONER will be opening in Smyrna. Open for lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch, the menus are home to a host of familiar favorites. Call it modernized comfort food that simply marries old and new. Executive Chef Ben Castro’s Mill Kitchen & Bar menu gives a nod to local farms, ranchers and artisans that produce only the finest ingredients. In addition, an inventive and substantial kids’ menu offers organic and healthier fare that promises to please young tastes and parent’s consciences. You can learn much about the character of a place by the bourbons it offers its patrons. The same may be said for the dedication to quality ingredients in the hand crafted cocktails. A quick look at the shelves behind the bar and a brief scan of the drink offerings and you’ll promptly get a sense of the establishment’s authenticity. Hand-crafted cocktails also rely on local and seasonal ingredients, and some chef consultation, too, for an intriguing collection of refreshing beverages. Hand-picked to complement the cuisine, the wine list shows an affinity for small winemakers and producers. Located at 590 Mimosa Boulevard, The Mill Kitchen and Bar is open for lunch, dinner, Sunday brunch and private events. Call 770-817-9345 or visit themillkitchenandbar.com. 31

LUCKY’S GRIM REAPER CHALLENGE By Madison Black On December 6th, the 4th
Annual First Responders Grim Reaper Burger Challenge for Toys for Tots took place at
Lucky’s Burger & Brew. Head Chef and General Manager, Ted Lescher, stopped contemplating the idea of the Grim Reaper Burger Challenge and made it into a real life event. Hesitant on how to stage the event four years ago, Lescher decided to contact the police and fire departments to see if they would like to be involved. “We decided to ask the fire and police departments if they would like to help us do a little more to help the community and Toys for Tots by participating. Thankfully, both departments agreed to join the friendly--and maybe a little messy--competition,” Lescher said. The contest then became reality when two officers, one from the Roswell police department and one from the Roswell fire department, attempted to eat an entire Grim Reaper burger. 34
The legendary Grim Reaper burger from Lucky’s consists of a four-pound all-beef patty, a pound of bacon stacked high, a half dozen fried eggs, an order of onion rings, stacked and layered in a specially-made bun with chili cheese Tater Tots on the side. Not only did they have to clean their plate, but they had to do so in only one hour. For entry to the spectacle, guests were asked to bring an unwrapped new toy for Toys for Tots. Able to take the challenge head on, the Roswell police department took home the victory this year. A Little About Lucky’s: Owners, Ernie and Diane Geyer, named their restaurant after their Golden Retriever “Lucky” and placed the newly established restaurant in the heart of Roswell. It didn’t make sense to Ernie to not make it so that Lucky could experience the restaurant with his owners; so he made sure Lucky could spend work days roswellinc.org • visitroswellga.com

ROSWELL GOLF
Settingdown Creek Golf Course, Hole #8, Par 4, 373 Yards
the ultimate golf swing By Bill Barkley, Master PGA Golf Professional
I have been playing golf
for more than seventy years, playing well enough as a junior golfer to earn a four year full scholarship to play on the University of Florida Golf Team. At that time, Florida was the number one golf team in the nation, with players like Doug Sanders, Dave Regan, and Dan Sikes who later played on Ryder Cup teams. I was a scratch player with the ultimate golf swing, playing consistently from tee to green, but lacking the short game finesse on and around the greens that one must have to play the Tour. After college, and a tour in the Army, I married, started raising a family of what became eleven children and settled down as a club pro, specializing in teaching. As a teacher I won the coveted award, PGA Master Professional with a Specialty in Teaching. A teacher imparts feel, visualization, and understanding of the swing. Teachers communicate with word pictures, graphics, demonstrations, and training aids. They engage students in the learning process with the aid of video analysis. They make instruction convincing with cause 36
and effect reasoning. Teachers prescribe drills designed to develop swing fitness and facilitate memorization of key movements. They help students discover and learn. Ultimately, a golf swing is not guided by a ‘conscious’ effort, but by a more ‘subconscious’ activity, like walking. Once a judgment is made concerning club selection and what type of shot the situation requires, an advanced golfer begins with a purposeful pre-swing routine, then executes the shot with little thought about mechanics during the actual swing. Over time, a golfer simply reacts to visualization, executing shots automatically, like a third baseman fielding a ground ball. There are several ways to swing a golf club, though I believe that the ultimate golf swing has an inside out path with a counter-clockwise spin on the ball, similar to the way a bowler rolls the ball to the right with a counter-clockwise spin into the side of the head pin. The following describes the execution of the ultimate golf swing: roswellinc.org • visitroswellga.com
WHERE TO PLAY IN ROSWELL
1. Address the ball with the ball opposite the left heel. 2. Bend at the waist, creating a 45 degree spine angle. The spine angle should remain constant throughout the swing. 3. The right foot should be wedged inward and there should be no lateral movement in the right knee during the backswing. 4. Rotate the waist clockwise, a one piece movement with the left arm extended. 5. At the peak of the backswing, rotate the left wrist counter-clockwise, shift weight into the left heel, swing the hips forward to the right, and let the arms and hands fall freely on the inside-out path. The ball will spin counter-clockwise from right to left. An inside out path during the downswing is desirable because the path is longer, allowing one to create more club head speed, and spinning a ball from right to left provides a bigger area to spin the ball into, or most of the entire width of the fairway. For example, a straight path down the middle would only allow half the fairway if the ball was spinning right or left. Developing the details requires many hours of concentrated practice to perform the pattern subconsciously and with timing and rhythm. The movement occurs sequentially and simultaneously, like a series of spinning concentric circles with a common forward moving axis. The part which spins in the greatest radius, the club head, is the last to catch up. The term rhythm means that the total movement of a swing is smooth, not jerky, and contains a constant, relentless beat, like the tick- tock beat of a clock. Good golfing! Bill Barkley, PGA Master Golf Professional with a specialty in golf instruction, had a 4-year golf scholarship to UF and has been a PGA Pro for over 60 years. He and his wife of 58 years, Claire, have 11 children and 25 grandchildren and live in Johns Creek.

The Fickle Pickle
is a Roswell tradition, so whether you have lived in the city your whole life or just moved in – this is a must try restaurant. The restaurant has stood the test of time since opening in 2003. This summer, they expanded by opening a breakfast and dessert addition called Sugar Shack in the Back. So what came first, the Fickle or the Pickle? The story is that owner/proprietor Andy Badgett had a fine dining establishment called Asher. One day, he decided to turn it into a southern cafe and deli. In keeping with the Southern traditions, the location sets the stage in an 1890 Victorian house. There are several small rooms that you might get seated in. You order at the counter, but the staff is quick to refill your drink or help you with anything you need. Their menu includes the classic southern fried green tomato sandwich and peach tea along with salads, pressed paninis, specialty sandwiches and many more choices. I love their chicken salad (which has hazelnuts and dried cherries), as well as their famous fried Cajun pickles. Not the healthiest choice, but how can you not indulge on pickles at the Fickle Pickle? They offer dill, bread & butter, and Cajun, and all are made from scratch. Maybe it’s the creole rémoulade sauce that keeps me coming back from more. It’s addictive!
Pickle recently opened The Sugar Shack in the Back (which is located conveniently around back of the restaurant!). They serve breakfast items, coffee drinks, baked goods and ice cream. Try their famous Bagel Bomb! And, in the warmer months, you can enjoy the patio seating area outside with your treat. Now, as avid shoppers, we would be remiss if we didn’t mention that there are several really unique shops within walking distance of the Fickle Pickle. Directly across the street is Southern Style, which has a large selection of clothing, jewelry, décor and even some options for the guys. In fact, you could park there and then walk to Fickle Pickle because come lunchtime, the restaurant’s lot fills up quickly. Plan accordingly though if you are on a lunch break; the last time we were there the line was out the door. It’s such a cute place though, so it’s worth the wait! Stop in for lunch or a sweet treat, and tell them Scoop sent you!

Roswell's Rain Gardens Offer Innovative Solution to Water Pollution We’ve all seen water rushing across a parking lot after it rains, and we’ve probably not thought much about it. But stormwater flow across hard surfaces like parking lots and roadways is a key way that pollutants enter our local waterways. And it’s one of the main reasons the City of Roswell has built innovative structures called “rain gardens” to improve the water quality of Crossville Creek, a stream that runs through Roswell Area Park. A rain garden is a shallow depression or basin in the ground that is designed to capture and filter stormwater runoff and the pollutants it carries. Rain gardens are planted with deep-rooted native plants, grasses, and shrubs to remove sediments and pollutants before they enter our groundwater and waterways. “Rain gardens mimic the natural absorption and pollutant removal that happens in a forest, meadow, prairie or other natural area,” said Alice Champagne, Water Resources Manager for the City of Roswell. “It’s a low-tech, effective, sustainable, and aesthetically beautiful way to safeguard our waterways.” The City targeted areas within Roswell Area Park because 44
many of the park's impervious areas (parking lots) drain directly into Crossville Creek. The creek is included on the Federal Clean Water Act's list of impaired waterways in Georgia for fecal coliform bacteria. "When we found out Crossville Creek was impaired, we knew we had to come up with a way to protect that waterway from further damage. We also wanted to reduce the volume and velocity of stormwater contributing to stream bank erosion and flooding," said Champagne. "Rain gardens are called a 'Best Management Practice, or BMP' in our line of work because they address all those concerns quite effectively." Four rain gardens have been created throughout the park: --Entrance Road Parking Lot --Pedestrian Path near Turf Ball Field --Football Field Parking Lot (in two areas) The total project was just under $200,000, which included a partial grant from the federal government for 55 percent of the cost. In addition, rain gardens will be incorporated into future City projects wherever appropriate. roswellinc.org • visitroswellga.com

OVERUSE INJURIES IN CHILDREN By Amy C. Keating, PT, MSPT
The City of ROSwell is a small community but plays hard and serious when it comes to organized youth sports. The competition is tough and starts at a young age. This is a growing trend among American youth and has lead to what is known as sports specialization. Sports specialization is defined as participation in one sport year around. In past generations, children played a variety of sports throughout the year. The trend toward sports specialization in our youth has lead to a significant increase in overuse injuries. Overuse injuries are generally caused by repetitive submaximal loading of the musculoskeletal system without adequate rest. Children are a higher risk of overuse injuries with sports specialization due to the skeletal immaturity of their bodies. During high periods of growth there can be imbalances of muscle strength, joint hypermobility, bone density issues, and growth plate immaturity. These normal growth characteristics can place children in a high risk category for development of overuse injuries when playing the same sport year around. According to the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (2014), symptoms of overuse injuries may include: sore muscles, fatigue, depression, insomnia, weight loss, irritability, decreased mental concentration, and high blood pressure. The Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine (January 2014) categorizes risk factors for overuse injuries into intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic factors include: 48
growth related factors, previous injuries, prior level of conditioning, anatomic factors, menstrual dysfunction, and psychological development. Extrinsic factors are related to the training workload, competition schedule, equipment/ footwear, environment, technique, and psychological factors from adult and peer influences. Readiness to play a sport is another interesting topic that parents should consider. Children must have a certain degree of physical and cognitive development before they are adequately prepared to engage in the skills required of certain sports. Age alone cannot be used to determine this as children develop physically and cognitively at different rates. In conclusion, sports specialization has become wildly popular in organized youth sports. Unfortunately, this has lead to an alarming high percent of overuse injuries. This crisis has lead many of the nation’s premier orthopedic associations to publish research and statements warning parent’s of the danger of sports related overuse injuries. Amy C. Keating, PT, MSPT is a Roswell native and currently lives in Crabapple. She works as a physical therapist at A Step Ahead in Roswell. She received a BS in Biology from Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame and MSPT from University of North Georgia. asaphysicaltherapy.com

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a range of complex neurodevelopment disorders, characterized by social impairments, communication difficulties, and restricted, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior. Autistic roswellinc.org • visitroswellga.com
disorder, sometimes called autism or classical ASD, is the most severe form of ASD, while other conditions along the spectrum include a milder form known as Asperger syndrome, and childhood disintegrative disorder and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (usually referred to as PDDNOS). Although ASD varies significantly in character and severity, it occurs in all ethnic and socioeconomic groups and affects every age group. 1 out of 65 children born in the state of Georgia will be diagnosed with some form of Autism. The Autism Spectrum is almost 5 times more common among boys (1 in 42) than among girls (1 in 189). A device developed in conjunction with the Marcus Center, can detect autism in children as young as 2 months old. If treatment begins as early as the first six months of life, it can vastly improve a child's outcome and possibly even eliminate symptoms. The impact of early interventions can be so great that in some cases an autistic child who received therapy as a baby will no longer exhibit signs of the disorder by age 3, according to a new study published in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders. Early detection and therefore early treatment can make all the difference in the life of a child with Autism. ROSWELL PETS
I was driving home
recently when I saw a familiar scene: a dog running loose. I pulled over and was able to coax him to me. He was a beautiful and boisterous black lab. I was happy to see he had a collar, but my heart sank when I realized that he didn’t have any identification tags on. The energetic cutie bounded all over my car, found a tennis ball from under the seat and tried to get me to play fetch with him. I knew that someone must be missing this fun dog! I drove him to the closest veterinary hospital and luckily this story ended happily: they used a universal scanner, detected a microchip, and his owner arrived to pick him up 20 minutes later. There are several lost pet websites listing dozens of dogs and cats missing around Roswell recently. The local shelters take in hundreds of pets each month! Sadly, only about 25% of dogs and 5% of cats that enter shelters as strays are reunited with their owners. Many don’t think about 52
microchipping their cat, but cats especially need them. It is 20 times more likely that your lost cat will be found if it has a microchip. Keeping a collar on your pet with an ID tag (the pet’s name, your phone number +/- address) is the easiest way for your dog or cat to be found, but often collars can slip off. Some collars can be dangerous for outdoor cats, and “breakaway” collars fall off. ID tags can become worn and unreadable. Every pet should have a microchip as a back up form of identification. Microchips 101 1) A microchip is a tiny electronic transponder the size of a grain of rice. It is activated by a scanner that transmits radiowaves to the chip. The chip uses no batteries, and is designed to have a lifespan of 25 years. 2)The microchip is not a GPS tracker. A unique identification number appears on the scanner, and your pet’s information can be looked up so they can be reunited with roswellinc.org • visitroswellga.com

you. There is a database designed by American Animal Hospital Association that makes it easier to look up most ID numbers. 3)A veterinarian or trained veterinary technician needs to implant the microchip. It is a simple injection and takes seconds. It is no more painful than getting a vaccination. Some prefer to have it done if the pet is under anesthesia for other reasons, but that is not necessary. The veterinarian will provide you with paperwork or a website to register the chip. 4)Register your pet’s information! It is estimated that only 1/2 of microchips are registered. Keep it updated if you move or if your pet has a new owner. 5)There are different types of microchips and scanners. Some only read certain types, but most veterinarians and shelters now have a “universal scanner” that can read all of them. 6)Have your veterinarian “check the chip” at the wellness locallifepublishing.com
visit each year. That will ensure the scanner and chip are working and in place, and help you remember to update your registration. Your vet can keep a record of your pet’s microchip number. 7)Whenever you find a lost pet without ID tags get them to a veterinarian or shelter as soon as possible so they can be checked with a universal scanner for a microchip. 8)Have any new dog or cat you adopt from a rescue or a breeder checked to see if they already have a microchip. Hopefully you will never lose your beloved pet, but if you do, a microchip can help make sure that your story has a happy ending, too. Dr Jennifer Ferrell graduated from the University of Florida veterinary school in 1999. She practiced as a Veterinarian until 2008, when she had children. She remains active in continuing education, volunteering veterinary care to local charities and writing about veterinary topics.

new year’s resolutions By Melissa Holder
Why are New Year’s resolutions so difficult to keep? We all start with the best of intentions: get in better shape, eat healthier, spend less money, get organized, and the list goes on and on. But statistics show that nearly 50% of resolutions are “broken” six weeks into the year. Yet there is hope! People that make explicit resolutions are ten times more likely to see a positive change in their behavior. So, when it comes to taking better care of your health, what are some ways to find success? • Have a well thought out resolution. Resolutions that have measurable goals are more likely to be successful because you can track your progress. In other words, don’t just say you want to lose weight, pick a number and write it down. • Have realistic resolutions. Breaking down the resolution into manageable pieces will allow you to have success along the way. If you want to lose 20 pounds, set mini goals of 5 pounds along the way and reward yourself with each accomplishment.
54
• Tell family and friends your goals. Sharing your plans will allow you to have built in support and accountability. However, pick your confidants wisely. Those that will not support your efforts or undermine your desires will only set you back. • Don’t get stuck on a date. Start now. If you want to exercise more, getting into a routine before year’s end will help you feel better during the holidays and establish a habit for the New Year. Many gyms offer end-of-year specials so you’ll be making a wise spending choice, too! At the heart of any resolution, especially one that means making lifestyle changes, is the strong desire to succeed. Quite simply, you have to want to make the choice to exercise or not eat the second helping. Fortunately, there are many convenient fitness and health options in the Canton area to help you find a plan that works for you. Traditional gyms are still very popular because of the number of options within a facility. These gyms often have a full array of cardio equipment, machines and free weights, and may provide childcare and group classes. While larger facilities that include everything from cardio, to weights roswellinc.org • visitroswellga.com
Image by HeatherPhotographers.com and even a pool are available locally, smaller gyms also offer cardio and weigh-training to help you reach your goals. Some gyms specialize in personal or small group training, with training packages designed for your needs and your budget. This is often a popular option with sport specific athletes. Trainers can customize workouts that help with golf, tennis or youth agility to name just a few. CrossFit™ is a group based fitness facility where certified instructors lead daily WODs (workout of the day) to provide a total body workout each time. To find a local Roswell affiliate, go to CrossFit.com and use their location tool. There are several in the area. Boutique gyms also provide customized services. They typically only offer select types of classes, such as Yoga, Pilates or Barre. Finally, more and more certified personal trainers are working for themselves. These experts train individuals and groups. They either meet at a client’s home or in a central location. Some even train at their homes. These trainers are found most easily by word of mouth, so if you see someone getting in great shape, ask if their secret weapon has a name! Nutrition is coming to the forefront of importance. Many locallifepublishing.com
more individuals are researching what they are eating, the food preparation process and how our food intake either supports or hinders our fitness goals. “Clean eating” refers to choosing foods that are minimally processed and have few if any additives or preservatives. Most nutritionists will base any dietary recommendations around this concept. And while it’s more than just fixing chicken and a salad, choosing foods that aren’t packaged is a good first step. Other factors to consider in clean eating include deciding if you should make organic choices or choose non-gmo (genetically modified) foods. Ask your doctor for a referral to a reputable dietician or nutritionist to be sure you keep a positive balance of vitamins and supplements in your diet. Health and fitness is about so much more today than just going for a run. Take some time to look at the many different fitness options in Roswell and make 2015 the year of the healthiest YOU! God, grant me the serenity; to accept the things I cannot change; the courage to change the things I can; and the wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time; enjoying one moment at a time; accepting hardships as the pathway to peace; taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it; trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His will. So, that I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him forever in the next. author unknown roswellinc.org • visitroswellga.com
