As the fields turn green and cherry blossoms bloom, I am reminded that spring is all about new beginnings. There is new life all around us happening in Marietta, and we are excited to share it with you!

While driving (or walking) to the newly opened Marietta Square Market, it’s impossible not to see how all the mixeduse development planning is revitalizing our city center. (p12) Living and working at or near home increases quality of life and decreases time in our cars.

What about working with your spouse? We sought out local couples who are in business together (couple-preneurs) and met Callie and Tyler Cooke, a young couple inspired to open gym a short walk from the Square. The beautiful, new, brick building houses their calling: Crossfit 11:24 - discover the meaning behind their name inside. (p16) We next asked Lindsey and Matt, who own Ghost Tours of Marietta, to share about running a business together out of their home with small children. (p15) And our senior profile - Bob and Lynn Patton - successfully ran a Bed & Breakfast together for many years before retiring in Marietta to be closer to their grandchildren. (p24) Warning: Reading this issue will make you hungry - it’s food festival season in Marietta! Taste of Marietta - one of Metro Atlanta’s favorite foodie events - will be pleasing local palates all weekend, April 27 - 28 on the Square. Revitalization of cities like Marietta through mixed-use, carefully planned development has enabled them to regain their independent city identities - no longer just a “suburb of Atlanta.”

IN THE LAST ISSUE, WE FOCUSED ON the amazing recreational opportunities our community offers. Now let’s talk about the meat and bones of life…the working and the living. One of the hottest national real estate trends in the past 10 years has been mixed use development. By definition, mixed use means that commercial real estate and residential real estate are placed in close proximity to each other. Like most great ideas it is a copy of an older idea with some new lingo attached to it to make it sound fresh.

In the early 1920s Americans began to expand into the suburbs and flee city living. For our region that meant Marietta ultimately went from a vacation destination to the suburbs and then it just kept growing on and beyond Marietta. For example, in 1971 Perimeter Mall opened and by 1986 much of the Cobb retail relocated to the new Town Center Mall and there was no retail or much life at all left on the Marietta Square.

Since then there has been an amazing revitalization of the Marietta Square and other smaller cities around Atlanta.

Our cities have regained their identity and escaped the “suburbs of Atlanta” moniker. The reason for that is that our great city and others like it in the area are live, work, play mixed use developments, just like the new developers try to create all over the metropolitan area.

One of the great things about Marietta is the fact that one can live and work within miles of each other and not waste time commuting long distances. The primary appealing factor of mixed use is that you can live in one location and spend very little time getting to work. Then you get home from work you can get your dry cleaning, eat dinner and get groceries without getting back out in traffic.

Marietta is again a thriving city with its own identity and there are many people who make that happen. Some of the great small businesses that help make our city so spe-

What led you both to start this business?

I (Lindsey) worked the company for 3 years as a ghost and history tour guide. We actually had conversations previously about how one day it would be my dream to run a business like this one. When the then owners approached me about closing the business, Matt and I sat down and had a conversation about whether or not we should purchase it. It was pretty much a no brainer.

Matt is the one who thinks things through, so he came up with questions I hadn’t considered. Inevitably, knowing my love for Marietta and support for local businesses, we both whole-heartedly agreed it was a great opportunity!

Biggest challenges running a business together?

The greatest challenge has probably been running it out of our home, while our children are there. With 3 little ones it’s hard to make phone calls or even find a solid 5-10 minutes straight without interruptions. Since we are trying to handle most of the managerial duties ourselves it’s also hard sometimes when we have a work related event going on but also something family related at the same time. We end up dividing and conquering a lot.

Greatest rewards of running a business together?

Being able to take pride in something we have worked at together is probably the greatest reward. And being able to come up with new ideas together. The business has also become a family affair. The kids love coming with us to help a tour go out and check people in and help advertise. Our 8 year old can’t wait until he is old enough to do tours himself!

stay together Callie and Tyler Cooke were called to serve others when they opened the doors to Crossfit 11:24, named from Proverbs 11:24. Today, they use their unique gifts and natural talents with sports, fitness and coaching to impact lives in Marietta.

IT DOESN’T TAKE LONG FOR traditional exercise to feel fruitless and repetitive. Without support or seeing results, it’s easy to lose sight of why you’re doing it in the first place. For different reasons than most gym owners in Marietta, those at CrossFit 11:24 trains all levels of athletes– from beginners to Olympians– to help them achieve their fitness goals in sustainable yet challenging ways.

Callie and Tyler Cooke are natural-born entrepreneurs who opened their gorgeous 14,000 square-foot facility in 2018 after discovering a common passion ( fitness), getting married and having a beautiful daughter, Cora.

They are very involved in their church, which has been and continues to be one of the driving forces in their business.

Their mission at CrossFit 11:24 is “create a culture that sees every moment as an opportunity to serve and to make sure each of [their] members feels as though he/ she has everything they need to become successful in their fitness journey.” Callie has always had a “knack” for teaching, and it wasn’t long before she became a certified coach in 2017 after getting involved with CrossFit in 2016. Tyler has always had a passion for sports and fitness, and has been involved in CrossFit since 2013 and a certified coach since 2018.

In the fall of 2018, they spent months deciding on a name for their affiliate until one Sunday in church, they were struck by one Bible verse in particular – Proverbs 11:24 (MSG), which states, “The world of the generous gets larger and larger; the world of the stingy gets smaller and smaller.” Up to that point, Tyler and his father had owned a successful construction company together, which provided the means to open up a busi-

This June, the community will open the doors to a new clubhouse, The Club, which will feature indoor and outdoor patio dining areas, as well as a full-service pub.

Holiday and seasonally themed dinners are lively and well-attended, Executive Director (East Cobb) Ann White said and smiled. “Our residents can ‘party with the best of them’. A community favorite dining and themed event is an annual fashion show involving local retailers. We also plan elegant tea parties for the women, steak nights for the men, as well as musical performances often during lunches and dinners.”

Both communities present “Chef Chat” each month, which provides an opportunity for residents to speak directly with the chefs and to communicate dining preferences. Chef Michael Payne (West Cobb) pointed out, “Before moving into the community, our residents had been accustomed to dining well, so “Chef Chat” is always an enlightening time for me because I learn what does and doesn’t taste good to them. Our mission includes satisfying their taste buds, so “Chef Chat” helps us fine-tune our dishes and continue to please our residents’ palates.”

COMES FULL CIRCLE for Sterling Estates of West Cobb residents

Bob and Lynn Patton traded life in a busy New York City suburb for what they describe as “paradise,” when they purchased Pine Hill Farm Bed & Breakfast, located on a century old 300-acre working farm and hillside in Historic Milford, Pennsylvania. The property included a farmhouse, carriage house, waterfall, old logging paths, breathtaking views of three states and the Delaware River Valley, and an expansive backdrop of the Kittatinny Mountains.

Finding a new home to replace what they were leaving behind was a challenge; but they found it at Sterling Estates of West Cobb, discovering the same level of attention to detail and care they had always offered their own guests in Milford. Choosing an independent cottage has allowed them to stay active with their grandchildren, family and friends, without the responsibilities of home ownership and maintenance.

Lynn told us, “There’s something about running a B&B that calls for an extra level of care: the ability to really connect with your guests, patience to do things right the first time, making sure your guests’ needs are met, and being readily accessible to them. And, that’s what we did!”

Lynn is especially impressed with the dining options and tells us, “While our cottage has a complete kitchen, we regularly dine at The Sterling Grill, a casual bistro on site with an open grill and meals cooked to order right in front of you. It’s like a country club or B&B dining experience.” In June, the new Sterling clubhouse, The Club, will open with indoor and outdoor patio dining.

There was a true sense of serenity on that farm for all who came to visit, and the Pattons made an extra special effort to please guests’ palates by preparing unique dishes with fresh, local ingredients. For example, their “Eggs McLynn” was made with brandied peaches from the property and homemade bread from the kitchen. Dining at Pine Hill Farm was as it should be: a shared, communal experience with meals served in a setting which encouraged socialization.

When grandchildren came along, Bob and Lynn decided it was time to move south to be closer to their family.

Lynn sums things up saying, “Sterling is ‘home’ for us now, and our Sterling ‘innkeepers’ provide Bob and me the same gracious living and lifestyle we used to give our own guests in Milford, and we are so grateful. It is like ‘coming full circle.”

Youth Orchestra Program

in the Southeast is Expanding

THE GEORGIA YOUTH ORCHESTRA is poised to offer additional opportunities for gifted and talented young musicians, as it expands its program for the 2019-2020 school year.

The largest youth orchestra program in the Southeast, GYSO is part of the nonprofit, Marietta-based Georgia Symphony Orchestra and serves elementary through high school age musicians from 17 metro counties.

“The GYSO mission is one of inclusiveness, providing a diversity of opportunities to a wide range of ages and performance levels,” said Nathaniel Parker, DMA, associate conductor of the GSO and music director and conductor of the GYSO Symphony.

Founded in 2006, GYSO selects its members through a competitive audition process. As GYSO members, young men and women continue their musical development in a nurturing and supportive environment, while being expected to perform at the highest level during a full series of concerts.

Geared toward elementary students

Ben Jordan, a bassoonist with the GYSO Symphony, its most-advanced level orchestra, and a saxophonist with the GYSO Jazz Ensemble, said, “being in GYSO is like [having] an All-State level band experience all the time.”

Before joining GYSO, Jordan, a Lassiter High School sophomore, never had the opportunity to play in a symphony orchestra. Not only has GYSO given him the opportunity to play with other advanced orchestra musicians, he has met many new people and made new friends. “It’s tons of fun being [in GYSO],” he said.

For the fall 2019 season, GYSO will expand from four to five orchestras, adding one geared toward younger elementary and middle school students. It also will add a string-only chamber ensemble and a flute choir, while realigning current string and brass quartets as honors-level ensembles. The GYSO Jazz Ensemble and GYSO Percussion Ensemble, as well as the GSO Youth Chorus, will continue.

Sarah Harding, the principal French hornist in the GYSO Symphony and a West Forsyth High School sophomore, credits her GYSO membership in helping her land college scholarship offers. In 2018, GYSO graduating seniors received more than $300,000 in college scholarship offers and had a 99-percent college acceptance rate.

“I’ve learned so much through my GYSO experience,” said Harding.

MARIETTA IS A FANTASTIC PLACE TO work, and play.

There are excellent restaurants, unique shops, great galleries and museums, and charming historic neighborhoods.

More people are visiting and moving to Marietta every day. They are drawn to the things that make Marietta truly unique, and whether people realize it or not, one of the biggest draws is Marietta’s historic buildings. The paradox is that the more popular Marietta becomes, the more our historic buildings are threatened by redevelopment.

Marietta has recently seen the loss of several beloved landmarks, most noticeably the Fowler House and an original Brumby Chair Company cottage, both located on Church Street. As construction of new homes, offices, restaurants, and retail space increases, so does the threat of demolition for historic buildings. So, how do we encourage growth while preserving what makes us unique?

In recent years, Marietta’s Historic Preservation Commission has worked tirelessly to establish local historic districts throughout Marietta’s residential neighborhoods. The districts help define Marietta’s historic neighborhoods and identify “contributing” or “historic” structures located in those neighborhoods. Those properties are then protected by regulations similar to

covenants used in modern residential developments.

The regulations help to maintain the historic look and feel of the structures, and help safeguard the buildings from demolition.

Downtown, historic preservation can be a great way to encourage developers and businesses to find creative ways to reuse old buildings. For example, Glover Park Brewery recently opened just off of the Marietta Square on Atlanta Street. Rather than construct a new building, they chose to rehabilitate a derelict 1930s Sears, Roebuck and Company building, which had been significantly altered through the years and was at one point gutted by a fire. They restored the period brick facade and added historic character back to the interior spaces by using reclaimed materials and fixtures.

Marietta is a wonderful community, and I have no doubt it will attract new residents and businesses in the future. We just need to remember that our historic buildings deserve to be preserved for those future generations to enjoy.

I am a huge fan of bronzers! This is a year round product, not just for summer. Currently contouring is a big deal in makeup application. Not everyone desires the “Kardashian� look. I recommend using a bronzer to achieve a more natural sculpted look.
