PUBLISHER’S POST

It’s fun to look back at old bridal and fashion magazines — oddly enough, not much has changed in the styles we featured back then! Our editors and designers (based in NYC) sense of style was impeccable, and the bridal gowns on our pages were simple, classic, elegant gowns that never

There’s always a cause for celebration — in Roswell, we love a great party, and we can easily come up with creative reasons to GE gather everyone together. RA Cheers to celebrating the little things and the big, with your closest friends and family, Roswell-style. Warmly,

About a year in, a larger publishing company in New York acquired the publication (and me with it!), and we grew Atlanta Bride magazine to be the top wedding magazine in the Southeast. After my son was born, I wrapped up my career - temporarily - just as The Knot was beginning to make its mark in the late 1990s.

seem to really go out of style. Celebrations, Roswell-style, is the overarching theme of the issue — we feature weddings, fundraisers, pop-ups, galas and talk with a few of the local people who coordinate all these parties. In wedding industry circles, Roswell is universally considered one of the top wedding destinations in the region.

THIS ISSUE BRINGS BACK MEMORIES for me of my first ‘real’ job, upon graduating UGA - I was hired as Managing Editor for Atlanta Bride magazine — which was just a fancy name for Assistant to the Publisher. Coincidentally, Rick Dye published the magazine out of his townhome in Roswell, overlooking the River on Azalea Drive.

AVANTE LAUNCH PARTY - Sunday, September 22, 4-6pm Aura Hair & Makeup | 7878 Roswell Rd | Complimentary Skincare Analysis & Express Facials

AURA HAIR & MAKEUP’S (www.aurahm.com), Tara Miller, is an award winning couture colorist and extension expert with a unique ability to create styles based on the latest runway fashion that fit her clients’ sophisticated, yet edgy personas.

Tara has an amazing intuitive sense of designing the perfect hair style and color to fit the lifestyle of her clients. Whether short or long hair, Tara uses techniques to match the personality and body of each client to create the ideal style just for them.

Tara has always had extremely sensitive skin and had a difficult time finding a skincare line that is for sensitive skin and anti-aging. So, she made her own! She and her partner Lynne Saccento, and with the gracious help of Mike Miller, Alexandra Gault and Lisa Weltsch, have developed a line that combines the top of the line ingredients to ensure noticeable results. Motivated by passion, Tara insisted on only the finest quality ingredients, never cutting corners on quality by a concern for cost.

She has an intuitive eye for style that fits an individual’s lifestyle, whether classic glamour to modern couture. With two locations - one off Roswell Road and the other off Atlanta Hwy - they offer expert hair care and salon services, including cut & dry, color, hair treatments, extensions, smoothing treatments. Spa services are more than just a side thing at Aura, offering waxing, makeup, facials, microdermabrasion, preventative and natural skincare, lash extensions and hot stone massage. Now, we can add launching its own skincare line to its offerings Avante Skincare by Aura.

Avante is so light and and of such high-quality that after one application my skin (of course I had to try it before writing about it lol) was noticeably younger looking, which is always a good thing at my age. In addition to sensitive skin products, Avante features hyaluronic acid cleanser and toner, and more. She has styled behind the scenes for many film, television, and music venues. Tara is also requested by top name designers to work with the models during New York’s Fashion Week

CHECK THIS OUT

LIVE ARTIST FOR YOUR WEDDING MEET KIMBERLY ALLRED: A lover of art for as long as I can remember, I began painting pieces of artwork for my own walls after college. I was beyond ecstatic when one of my dear friends asked if she could buy one of the pieces right off of my wall! And that’s where this journey I am on today all started.. Whether painting or hand-lettering, I am most happy when I am tapping into my creativity. A born and raised Mississippian, I am so inspired by scenes from the South. From abstracted versions of charming, rustic barns, chapels, and

cotton fields, I love to tell a story about the South through my art—it’s a story about faith, love and respect and exemplifies my pride for the diverse people and rich heritage of my home state. While my sweet spot is soothing neutral tones, I feel that every piece needs what my sassy grandmother called “a pop of color”! www.kimberlyallred.com | @ksallred

SCIENCE:

EVENTOLOGY

IT’S NOT JUST A PARTY. In today’s evolving, relationship-based, marketing economy, events have come into their own as a valuable tool. Well, let’s rephrase that, they CAN be a successful tool, and a worthwhile investment, IF they are engineered and designed with the desired outcome in mind from the very beginning. Successful event producers begin at the end. What is the goal? Brand awareness? Team Building? Reinforcement of, or Commitment to specific Corporate tenants? How do you want the attendees to feel? What should they come away with? Heck- what are they going to post about?! All of these answers, combined with creative, experiential elements, designed for your target market, are what translate an event into a vehicle to attract attendees, result in participation in the desired behaviors, and ultimately make the event worth the money invested into it.

20

How do you get them there? Host a compelling event. Riddle me this. Would you like to take time away from your busy workday to attend a corporate benefits roll-out and wander between six -foot conference tables meeting providers? The answer might be a “maybe” especially if you’re a procrastinator. But- I would venture to say that you definitely would show up if you had the opportunity to get your flu

shot, have a chair massage, watch inspiring entertainment, pick up a complimentary healthy lunch, craft a signature fragrance, have a gourmet coffee with a logo in the froth, and munch on a gourmet King of Pops bar while attending a branded “pop” out session to ask questions. The entire experience is one that you would purpose not to miss each year. Oh- and of course you would post the photo of yourself with the amazing, “live” strolling- table fruit girl. One local hotel giant produces its corporate benefits roll-out as a day of health known as “Well-Being Your Way.” The day is crafted to engage, educate and inspire its employees. Each year attendance has increased by at least 100-200 people and benefit providers say they enjoy an unprecedented level of engagement with the employees. Some have even gone on to say they have told their corporate office that the health fair is unlike any other approach and they need to attend each year. What makes it different? The experiences offered draw the attendees in. The information is targeted and of value and employees enjoy the event as a “perk” of employment. Compelling events are designed captivate the audience. Memorable moments are crafted to connect with the audience and deliver on objectives. In this type of event economy everyone wins.

THE HEART OF ROSWELL

the little things www.myroswellmagazine.com

Write those thank-you notes.

Good Manners From Sir, With Love 585 Atlanta St., Roswell, Georgia 30075 (770) 545-8355 | www.fromsirwithlove.com

If you’ve been waiting on a replacement for The Chandlery and Impressions by Suzanne, then you’ll be very pleased with From Sir, With Love, off Atlanta Street, next to Souper Jenny in the little, blue boutique. Sirmantha Ellis - owner, uses the tagline “Gifting Good Manners,” and when I left her boutique, I was drawn in by the way she spoke of the beauty and sincerity of letter-writing. At home, I googled the “art” of writing letters, and found a rare and remarkable little book, How To Write Letters — a “manual of correspondence, showing the correct structure, composition, punctuation, formalities, and uses of the various kinds of Letters, Notes and Cards,” written in 1876 by J. Willis Westlake, an English Literature professor at the State Normal School in Millersville, Pennsylvania.

Sirma

llis

From how to address the recipient and sign your name, to the conventions of business vs. social vs. personal letters, to the most elegant way to fold the sheet, Westlake presents a guide not only to the craft of writing letters, but also to the conceptual elements of composition and the role of letters as social currency. Style of Writing — Westlake writes, “All flourishing is out of place in a letter, rather it should be plain and, if possible, elegant, so it may be easy to read and gratifying to the taste.” The book continues a letter should be “regarded not merely a medium for the communication of intelligence, but also a work of art. Beauty of words, tone, and manner adds a charm to speech, so elegance of materials, writing, and general appearance, enhances the pleasure bestowed by a letter.” One section explains that paper and ink selection are a special kind of art that can communicate an extraordinary range of sentiments — something entirely lost to us in the age of digital type on sterile screens. “Never write a private letter on foolscap paper: to do so is awkward, clumsy, and generally inexcusable. Never send less than a half-sheet under any circumstances. For a social letter, even if you write only a line or two, use a whole sheet. To use part of a sheet looks mean and stingy, and is disrespectful to the receiver.” Luckily for us, we can get the right kind of stationary from Sirmantha, along with many curated gifts and invitations.#RB

Venue illustrations add so much personalization to your invitations suite. FSWL worked alongside Myrtle and Lloyd to create these unique watercolor design invitations. (Millennium Gate Museum)

Wow!

A

AT THE CORNER OF ALPHARETTA STREET and Norcross Street sits a beautiful historic property. The Roswell Historic Cottage was built in the 1800s to serve the Smith Cotton Plantation. This 4,000 square foot building would eventually serve as the Roswell Library before becoming one of the most popular celebration venues in the Southeast. With space for up to 340 guests as well as room for outdoor tents, the Roswell Historic Cottage can accommodate events of all sizes. From the outside, the building appears much smaller than the space actually is. That is one of the things that contributes to the “wow” factor of Roswell Historic Cottage. Every guest who walks into the space for the first time is taken aback by the massive space and 40+ foot ceilings. The current owners ensured the 2011 renovation brought out the historic building’s foundational character by leaving the exposed brick and wood beams and modernized by adding a loft area overlooking the ballroom. Jade, an illustrator who married at Roswell Historic Cottage in the Spring of 2019, settled on it for its quirky and unique feel. She and her now husband Matt married on a Sunday afternoon and worked with the planning team to incorporate uniquely Atlanta touches like Fox Bros BBQ and King of Pops.

28

Impress your guests by mixing modern design elements into a historic setting.

By Stephanie Sears However, long before brides and grooms were twirling on the dance floor, Roswell Historic Cottage was a library where patrons spoke with hushed tones and quiet curiosity. In 1960 after the death of her husband Mrs. Arthur W. Smith saw the need to create a bigger, more accessible, library for Roswell. She decided to renovate this old cotton warehouse to create a standalone library. This would reduce the wait time for books -- as the only way many books could be accessed was through a volunteer transportation system that moved books from the main Atlanta Library to what was called Carnegie Library at the corner of Sloan Street. In 1965 the Arthur William Smith Memorial Library, as it was known, became a full-fledged library branch with a substantial book collection of its own and an operating budget. The library was later donated to Fulton County and eventually became part of the Atlanta Fulton Public Library System in 1983. The Roswell Historic Cottage sits quietly next door to lively Gypsy Rose. Many have driven past, but have never been inside. Put this on your list when planning your next event, and then see if you don’t find yourself wowed, too. www.roswellhistoriccottage.com

R

SUCCCESS By Stephanie Sears

ROSWELL’S TALK OF THE TOWN CATERING (TOTT) is known as one Atlanta’s best catering companies, and can confidently quote many sources to support the claim. Housed in a cute, historic building at the corner of Woodstock and Canton Street, TOTT’s location in the heart of Roswell fits its commitment to community life. The consistent, highly rated, dining experiences produced in their kitchen are believed to be the result of an unwavering commitment to never compromising on the quality of ingredients. Never. Chef-owner Andrew Brackner explained that the culinary philosophy behind everything they do is ‘integrity,’ which simply means each ingredient does what it is intended (born!) to do. When each ingredient is fresh and of the highest quality, and offers its specific, unique flavor profile to the meal, then the harmony produced by TOTT chefs is nothing short of scrumptious. Andrew believes so strongly that using only the highest quality, freshest possible ingredients is key to their success, that he often travels to the sources to learn and experience the farm to table processes first-hand. He has visited the Costa Rican coffee fields where his coffee is produced; Maine where he sources mustard, lobster, and sea salt; Middle and South Georgia for quail, pecans, tomatoes, and handpicked Georgia wild mushrooms; and North Georgia for pears, blueberries, apples and peaches.

30

He explained, “The people who grow our food - the growers, harvesters, producers - are just as important as our clients and

are members of our extended team. We know their stories and respect how much care and passion they put into their work.” TOTT’s culinary team is trained to receive, inspect, and properly store the “treasured fare,” which is what they call the farm-fresh food they source locally and regionally. The chefs process and season minimally, and only if it will enhance a dish. While the traditional culinary skill they practice is not overly complex or confusing, it certainly elevates the flavor profiles when deliberately combined to satisfy palates. There are many familiar items on their menus, which we would label ‘comfort food.’ We sampled some of the passed hors d’oeuvres such as the bite-sized grilled cheese paired with a sip of tomato soup, and learned it’s quite common for clients to ask them to include a custom family-favorite item TOTT’s chefs then create with much care, like chicken pot pie or macaroni and cheese. It is refreshingly easy for anyone looking to hire a full-service caterer to begin imagining which menu items to pick, because a wide variety five-star sample menus are available on the website, from a tailgate party of 20 to a wedding reception for hundreds. Menu items include deliciousness like warm bleu cheese and mushroom tarts, candied hibiscus flowers with maple goat cheese, sliced Asian duck breast, and berry martinis. We asked Andrew to tell us, off the top of his head, to name a ‘trend’ he is seeing more and more that brides and grooms are asking to incorporate into their wedding receptions. He

said the popular feature today is the two ‘cold bar’ options he offers: a poke bar and a ceviche bar. Both of these options allow each guest to customize their individual meals, which not only serves each person’s taste buds, but also their allergies or dietary restrictions.

Talk of the Town Catering is the exclusive full-service catering and event services vendor for Roswell’s newest (and largest) special events venue at the Computer Museum of America.

The poke bar features diced tuna or salmon with brown or sushi rice, an assortment of toppings (edamame, red peppers, cucumbers, avocado, pickles ginger, mango, cabbage, dijon, and such) and choice of sweet, spicy, or mango-ginger dressings. The ceviche bar features octopus, shrimp, and mahi, cooked in citrus and vinegar, with an assortment of toppings (cucumber, roasted corn, pickled onion, diced chilies, avocado, bell peppers, pineapple, and such) and a choice of chipotle vinaigrette, honey lime, or blood orange and passion fruit dressing. With stellar relationships across Georgia and the southeast, Brackner and his team are considered “preferred vendors” at some of the most exclusive wedding venues available, and a summary of these venues can be found on their website. This stands to reason why Roswell’s newest special events space - the Computer Museum of America - has chosen Talk of the Town as its exclusive (not simply ‘preferred,’ but the only) caterer and event services provider for all of their events. Boasting 10,000 square feet of open space, with high ceilings and tons of functional flexibility, the newly opened venue is Roswell’s largest facility of its kind for hosting corporate meetings and social celebrations, and has bragging rights to almost 1,000 complimentary parking spaces. Although Talk of the Town holds a reputation as a premier catering and event company throughout the Southeast; their ‘home’

is in Roswell, where they’re deeply rooted in civic and community life. We naturally chose TOTT to cater our inaugural 10U40 Awards reception last March because we needed an event partner we could trust — one that cared about the people of Roswell as much as we did. There was so much for us to do in preparation for that event, and we were a little overwhelmed at first. It was a big stress reliever for me to be able to confidently hire TOTT and then ask Andrew if he could just ‘take it from here.’ I then checked ‘catering’ off my ‘to do’ list and, as expected, TOTT knocked it out of the park, impressing over 150 of Roswell’s best and brightest, making us look brilliant. I realize it’s a cliche, but it’s true — that event really was the ‘talk of the town’ the next day. #SS www.talkofthetowncatering.com

Roswell is considered a top ‘Destination Wedding’ choice.

THE TERM ‘DESTINATION WEDDING’ IS FAMILIAR TO all of us, but did you know it’s not only palm-trees and sandy beaches that lure couples these days, it’s also the southern charm of a city like Roswell? So much so it’s currently the 2nd most popular wedding destination in Georgia! To get a closer look at why weddings are putting Roswell on the map, we asked Sunny Bailey, owner of Historic Naylor Hall, if we could connect with a recent bride and groom that chose Roswell and her venue as their wedding’s destination – Michael and Anna.

need to hire someone to come in and decorate for you, which was perfect when planning from out of town. They were so EASY to work with and ORGANIZED, Sunny and Abbey are truly amazing people and they want their brides to be happy! As soon as my fiancé and I first ascended the magical steps outside Naylor Hall and visited with Sunny, we just knew it was exactly what we were looking for. Naylor Hall and Sunny were two of the major reasons we chose Roswell as our destination for our wedding.”

After touring several areas around the country, Michael ( from Michigan) and Anna ( from Alabama) just knew the city of Roswell and Naylor Hall were “the ones”. Besides Georgia’s central location to both sides of the family coming from out of town, the over 175 year old Naylor Hall also had everything they were looking for in a reception venue – the perfect combination of southern charm and contemporary elegance.

But it wasn’t just Naylor Hall that Anna raved about. “Roswell, Georgia is the absolute CUTEST town. Canton Street is a gem with so many restaurants and bars, how could you and your guests not have a blast? We did a meet up at The Mill after our rehearsal dinner and everyone had an amazing time. After the reception several of our guests ventured out to Canton Street to hang out all night!”

Anna exclaimed “Naylor Hall goes out of their way to make sure that you wedding day is more than special, that it’s also FUN. They want you to show up and be a guest at your wedding without having to lift a finger. For example, we decided to do a candy bar - they even set that up for me - I just brought them the jars and candy and they took care of the rest! Of course, Naylor Hall is already decorated so tastefully – so there was no

Both Michael and Anna are now officially married, and even though their wedding has come and gone, the memories and good time had by all will be remembered for many years to come. It’s easy to see why this sweet couple chose charming Roswell and the incredible Historic Naylor Hall for their ultimate destination wedding.

Modern Spirit. Old Soul. Naylor Hall began life almost 180 years ago, but only recently did Sunny Bailey bring it into the new millennium, with a complete makeover. “Thirty years ago, I discovered my dream. It was the day I walked through the doors of Naylor Hall, and I knew I had found a special place.” “In 2009 when banks were failing and real estate was crashing in the middle of the Great Recession, my husband and I were able to buy the house. She needed some attention, but with a nip here and a tuck there, and some contemporary styling, we brought her into the 21st century with her history intact.”

34

Naylor Hall was built in 1840 by Roswell King’s son, Barrington King, as the residence for Hugh Proudfoot, the Roswell Mills bookkeeper. During the Civil War the house was occupied by Union troops, but Proudfoot returned in 1865 to live with his wife, Euphemia, in the house until his death in 1871. Col Harrison Broadwell purchased the house in the 1920’s, added the big front porch and the hand- crafted interiors. He renamed it Naylor Hall in honor of his mother’s

family name. Celebrations over the years have been a way of life in this house. 1905 saw the first wedding at Naylor Hall as well as the Roswell Visit of President Celebrating 10 years as owner of Theodore Roosevelt to his Roswell’s gem, Naylor Hall, Sunny mother’s childhood home. They have assembled an amazing team of wedding professionals that are simply the best in the industry-hands down! Roswell and the Canton Street corridor have become one of the top destinations in Georgia for weddings and receptions, number 2 to be exact. Guests love walking to the bars, restaurants and shops in the Historic District after their party, staying in one of the many hotels, and enjoying all the charm Roswell has to offer.

Over the years of weddings and parties, Sunny has developed a close-knit community of Naylor Hall alumni. Walking down Canton Street on a night off, it is common for her to be approached by people asking if she remembers their wedding. Invariably after a moment’s thought, she will recall a special memory or share a favorite story. One of her favorite occasions is when families return with children for pictures. They play in the front yard and take pictures on the front porch. Sometimes it’s for an anniversary toast or just to say hello and remember a wonderful night years ago. For Sunny and Abbey, Naylor Hall is all about creating community, and once you’ve been married at Naylor Hall you are part of their family.

LEADERSHIP

The Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce recognized Dr. Steven “Steve” Palmer, Head of School at The Cottage School (TCS) in Roswell, as the 2019 Non-Profit Leader of the Year. Dr. Palmer accepted his award at a luncheon honoring fellow nominees for this prestigious distinction. The Cottage School is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that combines small class sizes, a workplace model, and the implementation of study skills to provide a unique educational experience. This combination, along with the outstanding faculty and staff at TCS, work together to provide students with mild to moderate learning differences an opportunity to achieve academic and social success. Dr. Palmer came to TCS in 2015 from Michigan, with a Doctorate in Education, a Master of Science in Educational Leadership, a Master of Science in Counseling, a Bachelor of Science in Education, and minor in Business and Certifications from various states in Special Education and Educational Leadership. He has served at every level from teacher to Superintendent. Steve’s main objective is ensuring all high school graduates are prepared

for college and careers. Under his leadership, his schools received national recognition from U.S. News & World Report as one of America’s Best High Schools. His influence during the past 5 years has broadened the scope and vision for a growing TCS community while maintaining the integrity of the school mission. Dr. Palmer was instrumental in the addition of the elementary grades and the opening of the Discovery Cottage. This fall, the school is proud of its highest enrollment to date with 257 students, an increase of 72% over enrollment in 2015. The monumental growth has allowed TCS to begin plans for construction of a new building on campus, slated to break ground late 2019. Steve believes, “There are no limits to how The Cottage School can grow in the future.” With significant growth this school year, he is confident that together, with the support of the community, TCS will continue to expand and advance to meet the needs of every child who may find success in a non-traditional learning environment.

THE LEADERSHIP AND STAFF believes it is their close connection with the Roswell community that makes them stronger. Roswell businesses, civic leaders and residents regularly support the school’s vision in large and small ways. For example, recently Wild Slice Pizza in Roswell had a spirit night to raise funds for TCS.

RM: As Head of School, what do think makes a successful leader? Dr. Palmer: In my perspective, there are three elements that make a successful leader. Have a vision, believe and be visible. Good leaders continually communicate the vision with the mission in mind to all stakeholders. Believe in the people that you work with and believe they will give their best each day. And finally, be visible in order to stay engaged with your organization. RM: Are there challenges you would like to overcome this year? Dr. Palmer: Recently, the school has seen significant growth. The enrollment is the largest it has been in the school history. With that said, the challenges are working with the families that want and need to be at TCS and we have limited space. Therefore, we are starting construction for a new building to accommodate the family’s needs for a place for their child to learn and grow. RM: Where do you see the school in 5 years? Dr. Palmer: This year we are celebrating our 35th year anniversary as a school. The students selected a theme for the year. “Out of This World” is the theme. We are working on plans for the future to build a career center, fine-arts building and a field for sport activities. I would say there are no limits to where TCS could be in 5 years from now.

into yet another adventure for the two entrepreneurs. “She Is Safe impacts the world from Roswell, GA,” stated Ms. Marto. The Roswell organization, founded by Michele Rickett, operates in eight countries helping to educate, rescue and restore women and girls impacted by human trafficking, sex slavery and childhood marriage. “Their gala will be held on the International Day of the Girl on October 11th,” Stated Ms. Hull. Prior to the beginning of the gala, there will be a live butterfly release on the green at Avalon in front of the fountain to symbolize how women and girls can literally be set free and transformed by donations and involvement. “It will be a breathtaking representation of opening their world to the beauty of all that they were meant to be,” smiled Ms. Marto. As the women researched the issues and potential sponsors for the SIS event, they realized that, while there are a lot of organizations and initiatives in the trafficking space, there is no global, unifying entity. Marto and Hull decided to found Safe Haven, The Global Butterfly Movement. The Power to End Human Trafficking. “We want the power of global unity and partnership to send a very emphatic message to traffickers by providing a visual message that TRAFFICKING IS NOT TOLERATED HERE,” explained Ms. Marto. The women’s hope is that cities, businesses and individuals will sponsor and customize the beautiful, public butterfly artwork, pins, and stickers in an effort to show solidarity and communicate that they are a safe haven to those in peril.

Over $150,000 raised for NFCC at Barbara’s Bash

I Hope to Be

E

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF NORTH FULTON COMMUNITY CHARITIES decided to retire at the end of 2019, after 35 years of service. The large, grateful coalition of staff, volunteers and community leaders held a fundraiser, Barbara’s Bash, in her honor on September 14 at the Atlanta Athletic Club. Barbara has been intricately involved in the organization since its formation in 1983, serving as executive director since 1990. The funds raised from Barbara’s Bash helped support the mission of NFCC to build self-sufficiency and prevent homelessness and hunger in our community by providing emergency assistance and enrichment programs. NFCC primarily strives to fill the needs of those in Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Milton, Mountain Park and Roswell, by assisting families with basic essentials such as food, rent and utilities, and clothing for short- term emergencies. When I first sat down with Barbara, I recognized a no-nonsense, spunky and humble woman, with an obvious objective of steering the interview away from her, personally and steer

the conversation to the staff, volunteers and clients of NFCC. When I asked what is the one thing she will miss the most when she’s not involved in the day-to-say. She didn’t hesitate when she answered, “The people.” She continued, “It’s the individuals - the volunteer, the staff member, the client, the child - who sacrifice their time and resources to help that I inspired me. I will miss that daily inspiration boost.” It’s not the volunteers, collectively, but the individual volunteer who takes time every week to stock the pantry, while her kids are at school. It’s not the staff, collectively, it’s the individual staff member who is resourceful and solves a problem by thinking outside the box. It’s not the clients, collectively, it’s the individual family that is helped by the services NFCC provides — many come back years later and talk about how much the organization meant to them when they were at rock bottom. “NFCC has been my life’s work,” Duffy said in May. “I started as a community volunteer and helped lead the organization. I am proud of everything we’ve accomplished in the last 35 years and I wanted to announce my retirement plans now so I could work with the board to find a successor that will ensure the future success of NFCC.” She told me that an estimated one in every eight families in Alpharetta and Roswell is living at or near the poverty level. “The biggest challenge we face in serving low income

residents is the lack of awareness of the general public about the existence of a population in need in such affluent communities as we have in North Fulton.” She continued, “It is very easy to live and work in North Fulton and not ‘see’ need. It hides itself very well.” I wanted to know what it was like in the very beginning, in 1983 when NFCC was formed, and she told me it developed from a thrift store and then formed its own organization to cover a wider need, adding, “Our staff has grown from one full and one part-time staff member and myself in 1990, to today’s staff of 20 full-time and 20 part-time.” I wondered aloud how someone like Barbara could devote their life to this type of service, and how some of us don’t. What’s the difference, the special ingredient that she - and others like her possess? I certainly don’t have it. I asked what she thinks it is? She thought for a moment, then answered, “My mother. My mother was this way. It’s just what she did, who she was, what she expected of herself, a way of life for my mother. I suppose that’s where I got it from.” I summed that up suggesting it’s simply her identity, it’s the way she sees herself and the world. She corrected me, “The way I hope to be.”

Barbara is most ‘herself’ when talking with others about the importance of what NFCC means to the community.

The couple’s son William, Kim, and Bill have their picture taken in front of the wedding mural painted by Frank Mack.

RE-TYING

K

KIM AND BILL MET 30 YEARS AGO, WHILE both were staying at an almost vacant resort in the remote town of Manzanillo, Mexico. Each were traveling with one friend, so the four guests spent a fun-filled week in the sun of Manzanillo. Bill was from a small town in northern Ontario, and Kim was a Georgia girl living in Minneapolis at the time. At the end of the week, Kim says, “I was in love. Ok, I was 23, so maybe it was infatuation, but it felt bigger than life.” The feeling was mutual, but they lost touch over the distance. Out of the blue, in 1991, Bill mailed a Kim a card to let her know he was still thinking about her, and a few weeks later they had him booked on a flight for a visit. He never left - they were married within a few weeks! Kim had wanted Bill to join her on a family trip, but her mother wouldn’t let him because they weren’t married. So, they got mar-

46

ried at a friend’s home with a few family members and friends to celebrate. None of Bill’s family was able to attend on such short notice, and the young couple carried guilt about that. Two years later, they had a baby boy they named William, which completed their circle, gave their lives more meaning, and made them a “family.” Life happened, distance took its toll again when Bill got a job out of state, yet Kim stayed in Roswell. Inevitably, they divorced in 2006. William remained the center of their lives, and they successfully kept animosity out of their relationship as William’s parents. Years went by, but the two remained connected and eventually began dating again— this time, more slowly! Bill proposed to Kim in the rotunda of Roswell City Hall in August 2017, in front of their son and their friends. This time, they planned a “real”

wedding - and on September 15, 2019, under a harvest moon, at their home in Roswell, Kim and Bill re-tied the knot! Bill’s friends and family came from Canada for this second wedding, as did friends from Alabama, Tennessee and throughout greater Atlanta. Kim’s friend, Karen, described the wedding and celebrations afterwards as “magical.” Roswell businesses were a big help to Kim - The Mill Kitchen & Bar catered the evening, and the couple rented a tent from It’s My Party, in Alpharetta. A lovely cake from I Canita Cake, gorgeous flowers, wedding plates created in Kim’s pottery studio - Webluk Farm Pottery - behind her home, with the help of her friend Maya Young. Kim had a great time trying on rings at Brown & Company, and she even had a girls day trying on wedding dresses at Wedding Angels Bridal Boutique.

Friends traveled to Roswell from Canada, Alabama and Tennessee for a long celebration weekend of cookouts, football at Lucky’s Burger & Brew, and casual fun. The theme, ‘Harvest Moon’, was carried from invitation to first dance, and the wedding did take place on the weekend of this year’s harvest moon. - so when Karen Zitomer performed ‘Harvest Moon’, with acoustic accompaniment by Rick Kearney, there wasn’t a dry eye around. The unique ceremony was officiated by Kim’s dear friend Erica Pines; and local businessman and artist, Frank Mack, painted a wedding mural on the side of the pottery barn. This is one of those endings where we may want to write, “And they lived happily ever after.”

A FAN LETTER TO

Souper Jenny’s

T

Photos & Article by Frank Mack, Food & Culture Columnist

When perfection comes to town it rolls in with a rumble, did you hear, have you been? Ms Jenny’s reputation is legend. Her chili is the finest around. Soups, salad n samiches. The place is so good a blind man could follow his nose to lunch. A kitchen of huge pots simmers away from morning till night. It is the purest form of cooking you can get. There is nothing what so ever between you and the absolutely freshest ingredients anywhere in the world but a bowl and a spoon. There is not a lot I can say or add about Jenny Levison, the multi-talented woman behind it all, that hasn’t been said. For 20 years she has blazed her own trail in restaurants. As an author, teacher, a chef and mom. Totally original, self taught, a true creative, Levison has writ large on life already and now she has opened a new location right here in little old Roswell. It’s here, it’s here, Souper Jenny is here! Located at 589 Atlanta Street, behind what was The Red Door Playhouse, just off of the Historic Roswell Square and in front of its own sizeable parking lot. Next, color it bright, turn on the stove, get the big pots roiling and boiling with everything good, local, fresh and delicious. Souper Jenny is the only real honest to goodness home cooking that actually reminds me of home. Her secret is she hypnotizes you with the smells and a staff that loves what they do is always there with a smile to greet you. They offer six daily soups, six sandwiches, roll ups and a PBJ. Additionally, they offer six salads that are chock full of everything fresh from local gardens, they are piled high and poured deep. It is delicious, extremely good for you, hit ‘ya right there, soup made from the best things on earth. They also have homemade cookies, sweet-tea, everybody cleans up after themselves…this place is fast food that isn’t. Jenny is old fashioned and futuristic as she predated the current FtoT movement by doing the right thing. Keep everything pure about big pot cooking. Cook by hand and sight not by processed seasoning. Her philosophy is to get out of the way of the flavors because an onion knows what it tastes like, the real flavor is in the bone stocks. Remember, you can’t hurry time, this process takes patience. Souper Jenny is spectacular in perfectly Roswell ways. The restaurant and Jenny’s cooking don’t need my help, but I need hers. Allow me to add myself to the pile of people and critics marveling in wonder at how she creates perfection in home cooking for anyone anytime they want. I flat out love this place. That’s not a recommendation. It’s an order. Get over there. You’ll love it. Everybody does ;) Thank you Miss Jenny, thank you and thank you. Sincerely, A Fan

HONOR

S

Your Body, Mind and Self

Shreyas Joshi and his wife, Manisha are adding to Roswell’s growing reputation as a yoga-loving city by opening Honor Yoga later this month off Woodstock Road. Shreyas said he chose the franchise because he saw it as a sustainable community of healing offering an approachable environment to honor one’s mind, body and self through the practice of yoga and meditation. He felt the value offered to clients was high, with unlimited classes, workshops, family rates and a variety of offerings. The pre-opening special of 30 Days for $30 even includes are 4-week introduction to yoga philosophy and meditation workshop. After working in retail and in the IT industry, Shreyas decided he wanted to instead carve a career out of his passion for healthy, balanced living and mindfulness. After a couple of years of searching for the right franchise and business model, he knew he’d found the perfect fit with Honor Yoga, based out of New Jersey, yet with locations all across the U.S.A. Shreyas has been actively doing Hatha yoga and meditation for over 12 years and describes himself as having a good balance between eastern and western philosophies, which have been influenced by the teachings of many masters. The studio will also offer Aerial Yoga, a new concept making its way through Georgia. What’s that, you ask? The gist: hop into a silky, sling-like hammock, draped from the ceiling, which supports body weight, maneuver the fabric so you can hold poses and then follow the intructor’s lead. The American Council on Exercise found that women who did three aerial yoga classes a

week for six weeks lost pounds, inches and body fat. As for opening a business in Roswell, Shreyas had nothing but positive things to say --from permitting to providing new business resources, the City was very welcoming. Manisha is a pharmacist at CVS and their daughter, Ishani, is a senior at USC-Columbia with a focus on business, with a passion for music. Yoga and meditation are much more than a business to Shreyas, evidenced by the enthusiasm with which he shares he wants everyone in this world to be able to find balance in life through yoga, so this motivates him to want to keep the practice simple and accessible especially to beginners. At the end of a day or week of yoga and meditation, if Shreyas still feels the need to detach and find more peace, he simply goes for a long ride on his motorcycle through the tree-framed streets just north of Roswell. Namaste!

Hydrate.

T

To benefit muscle function, and more.

FOR STARTERS, OUR BODIES ARE ABOUT 60% water, which means making sure we have some sort of consistent intake is very important. The balance between water and electrolytes allows our bodies to have proper function and have our systems running well - our nervous systems and muscle function. Fluid intake can regulate body temperature, heart rate, blood pressure and metabolism. Without it, the body can (and will) begin to shut down after a few days. Dehydration is no joke. Some of the symptoms of severe dehydration are altered behavior (anxiety, confusion), faintness that can't be relieved by lying down, rapid breathing, rapid pulse and perhaps even loss of consciousness. We have all heard the ‘8 glasses of water a day’ rule; however, there is actually no science to back this up. Nutritionists simply suggest we drink enough to urinate every two to four hours. The amount of water needed per day entirely depends on the individual. For example, people who exercise are going to lose more fluids so their needs are higher. What is our best hydration option? WATER. 1. Water helps maximize performance: Hydration and physical performance go hand in hand. When 2% of your body's water content is lost dehydration can start to have a noticeable effect; reduced motivation, increased fatigue and exercise feels impossible. Optimal hydration can prevent these from happening. Intense exercise must be paired with staying hydrated to perform at your absolute best. 2. Hydration effects the brain function: The brain is definitely influenced by hydration status. Studies have shown that mild

50

dehydration can impair function. Fluid loss of 1-3% can impair energy levels, mood and lead to reduction in memory and brain performance. 3. Hydrating can help regulate the body: Kidney stones for example. Proper hydration can help the prevention of kidney stones because high fluid intake. With the increased volume of fluids, more urine passes through the kidneys. This dilutes the buildup of minerals and they're less likely to form clumps. 4. Promotes healthy weight management: Water isn't magic and won't make you lose weight but what it can do is help control calories. Substituting water for a high calorie drink (or is a good option if you have a high calorie diet and don't want to add more) can help trim calorie intake. 5. Water helps keep skin clear: Dehydration makes your skin look dry and weak but with proper hydration the kidneys can go to work properly and help your skin. Don't forget your skin is an organ, meaning it's made up of water. (Further information on skin care and hydration) 6. Water and digestion: Water aids in digestion before and after meals; helping to break down food for the body to absorb nutrients. Being hydrated also softens stool in prevention of constipation. Building excitement is the key to a successful pop-up event. Popping Up Everywhere Roswell friends Deb Hull and Gillian Marto co-own Events of a Lifetime Productions and shared 4 tips to a successful Pop-up! We summarized the information here, but you can get a more comprehensive look at these four tips at www.eventsofalifetimeatlanta.com.

P

Pop-up events are seemingly unplanned or temporary events that have the power to build brand awareness and impress new audiences. But as with any event, creating a successful pop-up event takes a lot of planning, coordination, and finesse. How to Plan Successful Pop-Up Events By incorporating the following 4 ‘secrets’, it’s likely your next pop-up event will be a massive success! 1. Establish the Event Goal (and get specific) Establishing the objective is the top priority, as it will inform the venue, design, and logistics, as well as serve as a measure event success. 2. Pick the Right Venue When searching for venues, consider your target audience. Where do they eat, work, socialize, shop? Successful events

54

are easily discovered by the target audience. 3. Get Smart with Your Marketing Building excitement is the key to a successful pop-up event, so use social media to get creative, incite curiosity. Partner with local businesses and community groups and contact the press to build awareness. 4. Consider Logistics from the Get-Go Pop-up events may seem impromptu from the outside, but in reality, they are complex and require a lot of planning. The event may require insurance, permits, or special licenses, wifi, sound, decor, lighting, and vendors must be selected. Swag for one of our events included spa treatments and luxury Dior handbags – in addition to a large champagne wall and elegantly boxed cupcakes. Considerations had to be made for all of these early in the planning process. And, don’t forget to have fun!

This name “brack” comes from the Irish word “breac” meaning speckled - the speckles are the fruits and candied peel. Traditionally this

sweet bread is eaten at Halloween, with hidden charms baked in the bread, including a ring (for love), money (for good fortune), a button (bachelor), a thimble (spinster), rag (poverty). My mother used to wrap these charms in silver foil and it was so much fun! > Judith

Positively Roswell, a 501(c)(4) is a grassroots group focused on improving citizen engagement and tone in local government, has brought together several community groups to present, “The Great Debate.” On October 1st, at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center, theatre, each 2019 candidate for Roswell City Council posts 1, 2 and 3, has agreed to be present. Collectively communicating a decidedly neutral (and positive) tone on political matters, Positively Roswell kicked the season off with a casual meet & greet Sept. 10, which allowed residents to talk face-to-face with candidates. Hosted w/ Table & Main, the cleverly dubbed “Table & Campaign” tented gathering included one minute speeches and BBQ from local favorite, Brian Keenan. Turn-out was phenomenal, and every candidate was present. What does the City Council do, exactly? We’re glad you asked! The Roswell City Council sets policy for the operations of the City, sets the millage rate for property taxes, approves the City's annual budget, passes laws, and handles rezoning or annexation requests. Each member is elected by the residents of Roswell, and the Council is second www.myroswellmagazine.com

in one to the Mayor in the municipal hierarchy. There are six posts (seats), and each serves ‘at large’, which simply means they represent the whole City, rather than just one district. Another interesting fact is, each January, the Council chooses a new Mayor Pro Tem (like during her absence or disability. The 2019 Mayor Pro Tem is Sean Groer, Post 3 member, who will not be running for re-election because he and his family are moving to Tennessee. Additionally, each Council Member is assigned as a liaison (middle man) between the Council and a specific City department. City departments include: Administration, Community Development, Environmental/Public Works, Finance, Fire, Police, Recreation & Parks, and Transportation. PUBLIC ART By Roswell Arts Fund

E

Emma, public art consultant for the Roswell Arts Fund, attended “Americans for the Arts” annual conference this summer. Over 1000 arts leaders attended to explore ways of expanding public art. At one workshop, they asked for a show of hands – “Who currently has an artist-municipal partnership program in place?” Emma raised her hand, acknowledging we do in Roswell, and she then realized she was one of only a few others in our region who make the arts priorities. Artists Around the Table: This program began in 2018 with a workshop, when a group of artists and City department directors came together to discuss public art. The City presented new projects, and the artists suggested ways to incorporate even more art into the plans. For example, could a new roundabout include a sculpture in the median? Could the new playground by the river be made to look like a fish? Research shows when a city invests in creating a thriving arts culture, there is a measurable social, education and economic return, drawing in visitors, new residents and creatives.

62

RosWALL: In 2016, the then 11-year art project made of handmade ceramics was dedicated by the City of Roswell. It began with a grant from the City to international environmental master artist and site sculptor Jeff Mather, who actually came up with the name “RosWall.”

This creative, colorful 155-foot-long mosaic beautifies the 5-foot-high retaining wall on Forrest Street behind the Roswell Cultural Arts Center. Phil Parker, a retired art teacher from The Cottage School, and his wife, Anne, helped to coordinate the production of student pieces, of which most were created and fired at the school. More recently, local mosaic artist Donna Pinter guided many of the projects. Most clay pieces for RosWall Some of the pieces are symbolic, others are abstract, but all give meaning to the wall. The goal was to take a concrete retaining wall in the city and make it pretty. In 2008, the project received funding from an IBM’s On Demand Community grant in 2008. Take a look! along 150 feet of Fraser Street, behind Roswell Cultural Arts Center. The mosaic began on a small portion of the wall, but has continued to grow with the help of local groups, including students at the nearby Cottage School and local mosaic artist Donna Pinter. It’s a beautiful piece of art ! The Future: Conversations have continued to take the direction of creating more functional public art, like making the recycling center more attractive, be more creative with crosswalks. Let’s hope more and more local artists and creatives get actively involved in the process and submit their works! www.roswellartsfund.org
