diversity. I’m referring to greater selections of tastes, flavors and concepts from around the world. The Downtown and Avalon dining districts provide diners the most diverse cuisines in Alpharetta. While each does have increasing selections in numbers of restaurants, what’s more inspiring is the way each entertains our palates with its worldly influences. I find it so interesting - and exciting! - to watch all of this unfold. The Crabapple/Milton area - with 15+ restaurants - offers its own dynamic temperament - non-pretentious upscale, local residents with a lot of community affection can always enjoy delicious meals with fresh, attractive presentations. The Haynes Bridge Rd district also gives us about 15 restaurants along its 2 mile strip connecting downtown to North Point, but in contrast to Crabapple/Milton, it caters to professionals with its upscale local spots and national chains, mixed in with efficient business lunch options. And when we want less congestion and convenient parking, we simply drive South on Alpharetta Hwy or North on Highway 9 to find a scattered mix of durable restaurants with familiar restaurant brands we can count on for consistent taste and service. We’ve updated this Fall/Winter 2018 restaurant guide to include new restaurants that have opened since we published the Spring/Summer issue. Rather than simply updating our content as we had planned, we have actually added some new editorial pieces, including our cover story about an Alpharetta restaurant ‘trifecta’: Flatlands Bourbon & Bayou, Mercantile Social and The Southern Porch. What do you think? Tell us on Facebook (/alpharettarestaurants). And by all means, #eatlocal Photo courtesy of Vinny’s on Windward

CONTRARY TO COMMON BELIEF, not all Indian dishes are curries. However, “curry” has become a catch-all name for any spice-based meat or vegetable dish with a sauce. Curries can be watery, dry, red, green, hot, or really, really hot—it’s completely up to the chef in charge. In fact, there are basically 20 to 30 spices used in many Indian dishes—cumin, coriander, turmeric, and ginger, to name a few—and there are an infinite number of ways of using them.

“Porkzilla Sandwich”

SmokeJack BBQ Serving Downtown Alpharetta B4 Downtown Alpharetta Was ‘Cool’ IN THE RESTAURANT business aesthetics are important, but not to be overvalued. You’ve probably noticed the trend of overpriced restaurants with all the style and none of the substance. Those shiny “new toy” establishments lose our interest (and patronage) very quickly.
sandwich, and an entire category called, “From The Smoker,” so imagine all the possibilities. It should be no question that any restaurant measuring their menu items in pounds is a worthy investment. Smokejack is a self-described “family-friendly Southern grill with a major emphasis on barbecue,” but this concept didn’t manifest out of thin air. It is the brainchild of Dave Filipowicz, the restaurant’s dedicated and longtime owner. Before he opened the restaurant, Dave recruited his friend Jay Swift (of Atlanta’s South City Kitchen) to join him on a cross-country road-trip to scope out the national barbecue landscape.
It is understood that most restaurant startups do not last beyond the five-year mark, but if they do, they will endure. Impressively, one restaurant in Historic Downtown Alpharetta beat these odds by a landslide-- having more than a thirteen-year legacy under its belt. Smokejack BBQ opened its doors in December 2004 on Main Street, in a charming old building that dates back to the early nineteenth century. Behind the restaurant’s black-and-white façade, you’ll discover a warm and welcoming atmosphere of rustic red brick and wood-paneled ceilings, the signature aroma of house-smoked beef, pork and ribs (oh my!), not to mention their signature sauces and sides made fresh and from scratch every single day.
He kept a journal of ideas, observations and potential influences, from which he developed the ultimate concept of Smokejack itself-- a culmination of Dave’s experiences at BBQ hotspots across the nation, as interpreted by his creative imagination. Upon return he recruited Chef Johnny Umberger, who has remained Chef to this day, ensuring exemplary consistency in flavor over the last 13 years.
Some of the most popular and unique menu items include fried pickles, “triple bypass fries,” the “cue-bano”

Tried & True
The fully stocked bar is impressive, with friendly and familiar faces offering 30+ bourbons, 7+ scotches, 10 vodkas, 20+ varieties of whisky, 30+ bottled and draft beers plus several specialty house cocktails. A few favorites include their Peach Palmer; Jack’s Blueberry Moonshine Lemonade; and the 24 oz. “Large Marge” a-rita. The draft and bourbon flights, as well as the variety of draft - and local craft - beers makes Smokejack one of our favorite Happy Hour destinations downtown. In addition to a full-service dining room and full bar, Smokejack offers professional catering services both on and off-site. Upstairs is “Jack’s Attic,” a private dining room and reservable event space appropriate for parties, banquets, brunches, meetings and rehearsal dinners. The space can accommodate anywhere from 25 to 95 guests. Upstairs catering is buffet-style with a customizable menu featuring a variety of meat and sides, optional desserts, and bar options. Offsite catering is available for up to 2,000 guests; but unlike other cater-claiming restaurants, quality will never be sacrificed for quantity.
Whole Brisket
Dave works hard to innovate traditional recipes and improve business operations. Under his ownership, Smokejack always has and will keep striving to be quicker, more original, and better-run. Take, for example, the journey of their famous fried pickles. Dave is never impressed by the ordinary, and for a while it seemed that the competition had simply given up and settled for soggy pickles. So he set out to correct this injustice, employing a vendor to churn out batches of a larger “super-cut” pickle. Dave then worked with his culinary team to concoct a crispier (and soggy-free) fry batter recipe that today remains a house secret. This unique and fine-tuned appetizer is a town favorite, and the envy of all transient competition. While most restaurants lack the drive to innovate or even improve (in the outwardly-noble name of tradition), Smokejack does both, maintaining a strong legacy while continuously working to be better.
Jack’s Attic
After making it past the interviews, Dave was selected as a finalist for Small Businessman of the Year 2017 by the North Fulton Chamber of Commerce. The honor was ultimately awarded to Michael Lundmark of Jekyll Brewery, a close friend of the restaurant. Smokejack BBQ is no stranger to praise. Smokejack received the Certificate of Excellence on TripAdvisor.com, and is ranked no. 1 out of a whopping 250+ Alpharetta restaurants, so you can take the city’s word for it: Smokejack is more than a must-try, it has become a landmark and a repeat venue for hungry Alpharettans (who know where to find the good BBQ). Known for its full-service dining room, exclusive house-made menu items, fully-stocked bar, familiar faces, impeccable service, private (upstairs) dining, special event space and off-site catering, Smokejack leaves a lot of legacy but little left to be desired.

The Spirit of
Alpharetta
bourbon
By Beckie Hawkins
BOURBON HAS BEEN AROUND FOR CENTURIES. Scots, Irish and Englishmen brought knowledge of distilling across the sea with new grains. Thus, the Native Spirit of America, as declared by congress in 1964, came to be known as bourbon, the cornbased whiskey. More and more restaurants are investing in this brown spirit’s comeback. Bourbon is, “no longer your grandfather’s drink,” states Shawn Flanagan, bar manager at Smokejack BBQ. He credits this to “creative marketing, social media and increased interest in craftsmanship.” Bourbon rookies, Flanagan suggests, “can start mid-tier, typically a $9-10 pour.” He believes this starting point ensures “a quality product that will introduce the robust flavors but allow the palate to adjust and appreciate the complex varieties.” Smokejack’s flights showcase 3 different bourbons, such as Three B’s, which is so-named after distilleries starting with the letter “B” (Bakers, Bookers, Basil Hayden). A few blocks away, Flatlands Bourbon & Bayou turns creating bourbon cocktails into a spectacle. At the bar, Joe Rampino and bourbon obsessed mixologist Danny Shearer add flare by “using a smoking gun to infuse bourbon with cherry and oak woods and adding a twist to classic cocktails, like the Smoked Rose Manhattan, which is served with a hand-picked rose.” Branch and Barrel Craft Bar & Kitchen at Avalon set up a very popular-with-the-locals “Bourbon 101 Club,” for anyone who is interested in the fine art and taste of good bourbon. Free to join, B&B keeps track of incremental benchmarks which reward
12
#drinklocal members with special tastings, invitations to exclusive dinners and rare barrels. When a real treat comes in their doors, “Bourbon 101 Club” members are the first to know. The barrels - which might arguably be the most important element in the process - must be distilled in new charred oak barrels. The key word is “new” - brand new, and used for bourbon only once. “Straight Bourbon” has been aged for at least 2 years. “Single Barrel” means it is not a blend from multiple barrels. “Bottled in Bond” dates back to regulations established in the 1800’s, which means a higher quality product, aged for a minimum of four years. Home to the “International Irish Pub of the Year,” the best place for a bourbon or good Irish Whiskey is Olde Blind Dog Irish Pub in Crabapple/Milton. Unless you’ve got a trip to Ireland planned, the closest you’ll get to an authentic total Irish Whiskey drinking experience is right down the street. #drinklocal

WHEN VINNY, JODI AND COURTNEY CHIECO opened Flatlands Bourbon & Bayou in 2016, they had no idea that within two years they’d have three restaurants, with three entirely different concepts within the same block in downtown Alpharetta. They hadn’t planned this; but now say they wouldn’t have it any other way.
Local fans insist the owners not make any changes to their drink menus - their cocktails are that good.
All 3 restaurants are housed in spectacular, historic downtown buildings.
The Chiecos own and operate Flatlands Bourbon & Bayou, Mercantile Social and The Southern Porch, three immersive restaurants in historic downtown Alpharetta. Each establishment retains its own distinct concept, menu and customer base.
1
Serendipitously, Flatlands Bourbon & Bayou came together naturally, almost as if the building itself had been waiting for just the right tenant – the structure looks like an old New Orleans house. Locals were aware that several other restaurants had tried to make a go in that location, but none had success. Despite knowing this history, the Chiecos reasoned that with the “cool vibe of the building”, a plan to complement that vibe with authentic ambiance, and delicious Cajun recipes created by their new Chef Francois Duquette, there was no way to fail. And they were right. Flatlands became an instant hit with the locals, and as word of this ‘hidden Alpharetta treasure’ spread, the Chieco’s confidence solidified. Locals and visitors who have read the great reviews online continue to find their way to the swamp.

Local favorites include the Alligator Bites and Louisiana Cajun Fried Chicken, as well as Crawfish Combo, Spicy Gumbo and Blackened Red Fish. Chef Duquette’s strong menu changes very little - anytime he tries to make a change, the regulars revolt. Fans of Flatlands proudly insist everything stay exactly the way they like it, including the cocktails and the variety of 100+ bourbons. The Chiecos had no immediate plans in place for a new restaurant; however, they couldn’t pass up the opportunity this past February when long-time tenant Mittie’s Cafe & Tea Room closed its doors. The attractive historic building with a front porch on Main Street shared a parking lot with Flatlands - there was no choice but to move quickly to secure the space. And it just so happened that Francois had a “long list of southern dishes he was dying to make.”

their VP of Operations Kevin Jeskey. Lunch is served Tuesdays through Fridays; breakfast on Friday, Saturday and Sunday; a classic Southern brunch on weekends. Dishes include Southern Shrimp and Grits and Country Fried Steak. We found that the Three Cheese Sandwich with Swiss, American, and pimento cheeses, grilled on Sourdough - is irresistible. “The Southern Porch takes you back to grandma’s house, lazy summer days and firefly - catching nights,” Chieco explained. True to their pattern of letting the buildings determine the concepts, their third restaurant Mercantile Social was born in the old Manning Mercantile building, which was built in 1902 and rebuilt in 1910 after a fire. Mercantile Social fills an obvious demand in Alpharetta for more late night cocktail options with live music.

Open since June of 2018, Coalition Food and Beverage joins Alpharetta’s celebrated restaurant scene in Teasley Place, a mid-rise building including restaurants, shops and luxury residences, and the atmosphere has an urban aesthetic that evokes the action and pulse of the growing community – not only in “look-and-feel” but also as a vibrant hub of community engagement. The sense of possibility and energy infuses all aspects of the Coalition experience including the street-style art and a casually cool, throwback playlist. Chef Woolery “Woody” Back, a co-owner, is the driving force in the kitchen, offering a contemporary menu with progressive and signature interpretations of American wood-fired classics.

In Hunter’s Weekly, in 1895, British author Guy Beringer combined the words “breakfast” and “lunch” to create “brunch” and made a case that post-church Sunday meals should be made of lighter fare served late in the morning rather than long, multi-course meals with heavy meats and cheeses.

Milton’s Cuisine & Cocktails 800 Mayfield Rd, Alpharetta • (770) 817-0161 • miltonscuisine.com Crabapple/Milton District • $$$ • Fine Dining, Seed-to-Fork NESTLED IN THE FIVE POINTS OF CRABAPPLE’S historic district, the distinctly unique Milton’s Cuisine & Cocktails entices your senses with its inviting atmosphere and artful edge. The 150-year-old farmhouse and 1930’s cottage were preserved and restored with classic elements and charming details. Beyond the cuisine, guests rave about the energetic bar, multiple fireplaces, intertwining outdoor deck and patio, and onsite garden, Milton’s Acre. The restaurant features contemporary new Southern cuisine which utilizes fresh, local ingredients to create regionally inspired comfort food with bold flavors artistically presented by professional attentive servers in the welcoming atmosphere. In addition to its seed-to-fork new Southern fare, Milton’s features prime steaks, including filet mignon, grass-fed Delmonico rib eye, dry-aged bone in NY Strip and their signature American Kobe flank steak. Many of the ingredients originate from Milton’s Acre, which features fresh heirloom vegetables and herbs used nightly in the kitchen. This one-acre outdoor space is perfect for weddings, wine tastings, social and corporate events. From late spring to early fall, Milton’s offers a “Garden Dinner Series,” which has sell-out limited seating. It’s a must-try dining experience that features a four-course, family-style menu with wine pairings in the center of the garden. Executive Chef Derek Dollar has gained a reputation as an inventive and uncompromising chef who demands the very best. SOUTH CITY KITCHEN New Southern | Avalon district
Fifth Group Restaurants headed North on 400 to open the group’s fourth South City Kitchen location at Avalon. SCK is renowned for their fresh take on classic southern dishes serving breakfast, lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch. They continue to serve their regular favorites, such as Shrimp and Geechee Boy Grits and Pan Fried Chicken Livers; however, the kitchen at this newest location is led by Executive Chef David Gross, known for creative menu development and seeking out local and seasonal ingredients to generate new masterpieces with exciting twists. The restaurant space itself was designed by a local architectural firm—The Johnson Studio at Cooper Carry. They created a delightfully inventive space that melds the restaurant seamlessly into the Hotel at Avalon, including the patio dining area that overlooks Avalon Boulevard. SCK is this year’s ‘must-see-and-be-seen’ spot to dine, so make your reservations in advance for the best seating. 9000 Avalon Blvd | (678) 722-3602 | www.southcitykitchen.com
PURE TAQUERIA
Mexican | Crabapple district
Located at the site of an original PURE fuel oil gas station and situated on sleepy Roswell Street – the original PURE taqueria™ is a legendary Alpharetta hot spot! This place rocks! The vibe is hip, fresh and authentic. The locals covet its covered patio after a hard won tennis match. And no one shines like we do at at 5-o’clock. Something about the taste of a tart, refreshing PURE margarita will make you forget the weekday blues! The original PURE is still carefully managed by its founders – Chris Sedgwick and Michele Sedgwick – serious restaurateurs with a wild side. And if their culinary genius (Carlos) has been on site, ask what he’s whipped up in the kitchen. His specials are as authentic as they come! Don’t wait another minute to check out the original, PURE taqueria™ Alpharetta! 119 Roswell Street | (770) 676-0911 www.puretaqueria.com = F&D Favorite

STREET FOOD M Thai Street Food
TODAY’S FOOD TRUCKS ARE NOT simply ordinary taco trucks on the corner downtown - these gourmet trucks’ menus offer delicious ethnic and fusion cuisine at reasonable prices. Food trucks are now even Zagat rated. But beyond food trucks - and beyond small plates - there’s ‘street food.’ And, street food is making it’s mark, locally.
Dutch influences tasting strong and spicy. “Kai Indian: diverse, as every region of India hasJeaw” its own specialties to offer. ie. Vada Pav, Cholle Bhature, Parathas, Rolls, Bhel Puri, Sev Puri, Gol Gappa, Aloo tikki, Kebabs, Tandoori chicken, Samosa. Hawaii: a “plate lunch” (rice, macaroni salad, and a portion of meat) inspired by the bento of the Japanese. Denmark: sausage wagons and hot dogs. Egypt: a dish called “ful,” a slow-cooked fava bean dish. Mexican: termed “antojitos” (“little cravings”) of tacos, huaraches and maize based foods.
When a street-food vendor in Thailand is awarded the prestigious Michelin star, it’s time to start paying attention to what’s happening on the street-food scene closer to home. Street food’s transient nature means it can keep up with new flavors and textures, allowing authentic, culturally influenced chefs to provide winning combinations.

VINNY’S ON WINDWARD Italian | Windward district
Vinny’s on Windward in Alpharetta has been one of the top spots for business visitors and date nights for over 20 years. One of the first of several hot restaurants owned by Chris Sedgwick (Sedgwick Restaurant Group), Vinny’s is a modern and upscale Italian eatery with a Californian flair featuring a menu fueled by their wood-fired grill. Chef Louis Ramirez’s trend driving work in the kitchen shows why Vinny’s has consistently been one of the few restaurants rated ‘Excellent’ in the Zagat’s guide over the years. Deliciously light yet fulfilling options abound from seared tuna with pinzimonio salad to shrimp and scallop risotto with a white truffle essence. Assuming there’s room left, the Tiramisu or the white chocolate Crème Brulee Napolean are great choices to complete the meal. While Vinny’s caters to the professional scene during lunch hours, and has been the site of thousands of business deals over the years, they also have one of the best wine selections in Alpharetta that helps turn their Tuscany styled décor into an amazingly romantic rendezvous. 5355 Windward Pkwy. | (770) 772-4644 | www.sedgwickrestaurantgroup.com
MADE KITCHEN & COCKTAILS Spanish Influence | Downtown district
Sedgwick Restaurant Group continues to wow us with its fresh approach to familiar dining concepts - MADE Kitchen & Cocktails - serves up small plates inspired by Spanish culture plus more than a pinch of Southern awesomeness. Inside, the ambiance conveys a unique vibe: Begin with a classic, Spanish barn; add an industrial mill; and then mix in a heavy use of modern metalworks and you’ll be close to envisioning this artfully designed space. MADE makes it all work in harmony. It’s rustic, yet modern. Spacious, yet intimate. We noted the metal shutters were sourced from the original Jim Beam distillery, which really complimented their metal - wooden - modern interior design. Spanish influenced, small plates / tapas keep coming out of the kitchen - and diners are able to try a nice variety of dishes and flavors to share and pass. Order the Paella Mixto and the Braised Short Rib Croquettes and pair each up with the right cocktails always engineered with old world ingredients. 45 Roswell Street | (770) 452-6233 | www.madekc.com = F&D Favorite

We won’t bore you with the ‘sciency’ stuff because the proof is in the pudding - well, the dough, actually. Join the Flippin’ Dough Club for special offers and a free slice of their pizza as a gift. Locally owned and operated, the owners understand the importance of raising dough and supporting local causes. They proudly partner with multiple causes to help do their part.
