It’s September!! Time for Roswell Arts Festival Celebrating 49 years in Historic Town Square

Visitors are

encouraged to take advantage of the free shuttle running from City Hall to Town Square. The shuttle will be running for the duration of the festival, and will have plenty of room to store anything that you might purchase. Held annually the 3rd weekend of September, the event is presented by the Roswell Recreation Association, an all-volunteer group, and raises funds that benefit the Recreation & Parks programs in Roswell. To date the group has given over one million dollars for recreational needs of Roswell citizens. In the Roswell Recreation Association’s 49-year history they have contributed to funding for the initial 63 acres for Roswell Area Park, helped equip the swimming pool when it opened in 1975, aided in constructing an athletic field, assisted in the Bicentennial renovations of the historic Town Square, and provided 9.37 acres to add to Roswell Area Park.

This group also helped furnish and equip the Community Activity Building, assisted with the renovations and improvements to Vickery Creek Park, donated to Phase I construction of East Roswell Park, spearheaded a community drive to help match the Kirbo donation for the Physical Activity Center at Roswell Area Park, and gave $55,000 to assist to be sure the center was well-equipped on opening day. The Roswell Recreation Association gave $50,000 for the creation of Roswell Visual Arts Center, contributed to master plans and towards a site plan for Sloan Street Park, gave start-up funds for the Roswell Trail System, gave another $50,000 for the Roswell Visual Arts Center, gave $100,000 to purchase property on Grimes Bridge Road, property that joined the Waller Park Extension, helped furnish the Adult Recreation Facility, provided funds for the Sprayground, provided funds to add shade to areas, gave $24,095 to purchase outdoor fitness equipment for Roswell Area Park and committed $25,000 to the Miracle Field.

These restaurants not only fulfill a basic need, but also provide a special place for social interaction and significantly impact the local economy on multiple levels. In an ever changing world, restaurants are a consistent and reliable resource for the community. This industry thrives in Roswellâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unique culture, which in turn creates a hub of quality, independent restaurants within the city. On a national level, 82% of Americans now live in urban areas. This drastic migration of people represents more mouths to feed. Restaurants are a social hub many people rely on for connection and entertainment. They provide the personal attention people crave and encourage face-to-face interaction, even in a world where fast moving technology has drastically altered how we meet and do business. A larger, hungry population to feed meansrestaurants will thrive in these areas. Not only are they community gathering places, but restau-

rants are key economic drivers and contribute to a strong, skilled workforce. They are consistently creating new jobs and providing a reliable environment for employees to build their careers. Over the next few years, it will be more important than ever to make the restaurant industry a more stable environment for employees to build and expand their skills. In addition, restaurants are prevented from globalizing and finding cheaper labor overseas because of the time limit for delivering food to customers. Therefore, more dollars are spent locally on supplies, labor and ingredients. City planning, neighborhood development and quality real estate are built and designed around areas with well-knownrestaurants because they are such an important aspect of economic development. Quality restaurants directly effect almost every aspect of the local economy, including tourism and property values. It is an industry where boundaries can be pushed and creativity can flourish, but the basic formula doesn't often change and can be relied upon. It is a mutually beneficial relationship that will show dividends for years to come.

Annual Roswell Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) & Roswell Inc Board of Directors Dinner and Community Awards, Roswell Inc was proud to present their 2014 Annual Report Card, as well as recognize some community leaders who have done exceptional work in Roswell in recent years.

After presenting the awards, Roswell Inc presented a report of their most recent numbers. As of December 31, 2014, Roswell is home to more than 5,477 businesses. This number includes everything from the home based entrepreneurs to the major corporations. Last year alone, 542 new businesses licenses were issued.

This year, Roswell Inc distributed two awards to two exceptional professionals who are doing great work in the field of economic development.

Roswell’s Opportunity Zone (OZ) has been a huge draw for Roswell, promoting job creation and utilizing tax incentives to help businesses succeed. Roswell Inc has personally assisted in the OZ Certification process. To date, there are over 180 businesses in the OZ. In 2014, this incentive helped create more than 1,345 jobs. The vacancy rates for office space in these areas has significantly reduced. Within the OZ, vacancy rates have reduced from 14.9% in 2013 to 12.8% in 2014. Vacancy outside of the OZ has reduced as well, from 12.8% to 11.3% in the last year.

The Young Professional of the Year award went to the president of Lehigh Homes, Brendan Walsh. His achievements include the impressive Providence neighborhood, a community of townhomes behind Canton Street, as well as serving on the board of Roswell NEXT as one of its founding members.Brendan pushed the envelope with his company to focus on creating urban atmosphere and connectivity. Because of projects like his, people in Roswell have the ability to live closer to where they work and play. His energy and passion are helping push Roswell into the future. The economic development award went to Lennar Multifamily Communities, represented by Chris Cassidy. This company is responsible for Roswell City Walk on Frazier St. It’s an honor for a company like Lennar to invest so much time, money and vision into Roswell. This $46 million endeavor is a showcase for the kind of community Roswell is growing into. These luxury condos provide much needed housing for the variety of skilled professionals who come here

Roswell Inc continues to encourage quality development and redevelopment of properties around town. Last year, 182 construction permits were issued with a combined value of $77,884,151. It was a proud and productive year from Roswell Inc and they will be launching new programs and events in late 2015 - so stay tuned! Roswell Becomes a Town

In 1828, gold was found in north Georgia, thus causing a swarm of settlers to the area, especially Dahlonega and Auraria. It was this activity that prompted Roswell King of Darien, Georgia to investigate the sites. Traveling on horseback, Mr. King followed Indian trails to the Chattahoochee River near what is now Roswell. Following the river, Mr. King discovered vast forests and the rushing waters of Vickery (Vickery’s) Creek. These natural resources inspired him to envision a mill, powered by the water, and a community close by. In 1838, he began work on the first cotton mill and in 1839 it was incorporated as The Roswell Manufacturing Company. The company was extremely successful and expanded. Even a flouring mill was constructed. Orders for cloth, tenting, rope, flannels, and yarn poured in. Mr. King offered home sites and investment opportunities to his friends and associates from coastal Georgia and a community was built. They constructed magnificent homes for themselves, cottages and apartments for mill workers, a general store near the mill, a church, and an academy to attend to the educational needs of the children. Before Roswell King’s wife, Catherine, could move from Darien, she died, never seeing the town that would be named for her husband. Roswell King died in 1844. Their son, Barrington King, and his wife, Catherine Nephew King, worked to carry on his father’s dream. There were several distinct styles of life in Roswell …. the prominent families, the mill workers who often labored 11-hour days, and the slaves. The issues of slavery and states

rights would have a major impact on the town of Roswell. Secession of Georgia from the Union took place in January of 1861. By 1861, Roswell families, who could afford to do so, gathered as many personal possessions as possible, and began to refugee to safer areas. The Union cavalry, under the command of Brigadier General Kenner Garrard, arrived in Roswell on July 5, 1864. Retreating Confederate soldiers burned the covered bridge at the Chattahoochee River in order to slow the Union’s advancement. However, there was a river crossing called Shallowford (located on today’s Azalea Drive at the River Park). At Shallowford, in those early years, the river was only about waist deep. It was here that Union troops crossed the river. The fighting that took place involved the Spencer repeating rifle. This was the first time in U.S. History a rifle was used successfully under water during armed conflict. Theophile Roche, a French citizen, had been employed by the cotton mills and later the woolen mill. In an attempt to save the mills, he flew a French flag in hopes of claiming neutrality. However, the letters CSA (Confederate States of America) were found on cloth being produced. For two days the mill was spared, but

on July 7, after it was proven that the neutrality claim was false, General Sherman ordered everyone connected with the mill to be charged with treason. The nearby cotton mill was also destroyed. Mill workers, most women and children since the men were fighting the war, were arrested, charged with treason and sent north to uncertain fates. One of the women involved in this tragedy was pregnant and working as a seamstress at the mill. She was sent north to Chicago, and left to fend for herself. It would take five years before she and her daughter would return, on foot, to Roswell, only to find that her husband had remarried because he thought she was dead. Although the mills were destroyed, the magnificent homes and church were not. After the War, families returned to Roswell and began to pick up the pieces of their lives. The mills were rebuilt and the textile industry once again became a strong part of Roswell’s economy, until 1975.

Rhythms on the River Concert Series

The Chattahoochee Nature Center presents Rhythms on the River, a monthly concert series on Sundays at 6 P.M. The concerts are held at the Ben Brady Lakeside Pavilion. They are partnering with Atlanta Plays it Forward, a non-profit which raises money for a variety of causes. On April 19th Rhythms on the River presented a “Shower of Stars” with the Jazz Jones Legacy including several of Atlanta’s star vocalist: Melanie Dobbins, Brandon DeGroff, Michele GlenDe, and Alvin Maddox. Lynn McIntyre, Senior Director of the Chattahoochee Nature Center, writes, “We look forward to this new concert series to provide a new musical venue for North Fulton and East Cobb residents looking for culture and a place to enjoy an evening out in nature.” The concert series began on April 19th and will run through September 20th. Attendees enjoy the beautiful surroundings and entertainment, while local charities benefit from the proceeds and recognition. The concerts have included “Satin Alley Jazz” on Sunday May 24th and“The Reflections: Big Band Swing” on June 21st. Upcoming shows: Capital City Xpress: Music of the Swing and Big Band Era” on July 19th, “Pieces of Eight, A Shag Dance Party” on August 16th, and “Divas of Swing” with the Jazz Jones Legacy on Sunday, September 20th. A different local charity is supported each month with the proceeds from that month’s concert. On April 19th, North Fulton Community Charities (NFCCHelp.org), whose mission is to build independence and prevent homelessness and hunger.

At the first performance in May, Satin Alley Jazz is a mixed vocal ensemble that performs choral jazz from the 30’s, 40’s, 50’s and beyond. Don Brainerd, the director of Satin Alley Jazz, leads them through a number of choral arrangements. This show benefited the Star House Foundation (StarHouseFoundation.org), which provides after school tutoring and mentoring program for vulnerable children. The June performance featured, “The Reflections”, a sixteen piece Big Band with vocalist. Child Development Association (cdakids.

Remaining Shows Include: July 19: This Capital City Xpress show will benefit the Auditory Verbal Center (avchears.org), which brings people who are deaf or hard of hearing into a lifetime of listening and speaking through the use of services like Cochlear Implants and assistive listening devices. Camp Sunshine (campsunshine.org) is helped by Chattahoochee Nature Center and Pieces of Eight on August 16th. Camp Sunshine is a retreat for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. September 20: The final performance presents the “Divas of Swing” to benefit Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA. org). Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta provides hospitals and doctors for a healthier tomorrow. Bring a picnic and dine! Riverside Sounds Concert Series The City of Roswell hosts the annual free Roswell Riverside Sounds concert series at Riverside Park on the first Saturday of the month from May through October from 7-9 p.m. In 2015, the July concert will be held on the second Saturday of the month due to the 4th of July. Back this year, there will be at least two food trucks on location

Remaining 2015 Artists Include: July 11: River Whyless • riverwhyless.com • Hailing from Asheville, North Carolina, River Whyless puts a hauntingly sweet spin on traditional foundations. English trad-folk sounds are some of the band’s obvious touchstones, putting them in a category similar to contemporaries like Fleet Foxes and Stornoway. River Whyless has been featured on NPR’s World Cafe, Paste Magazine, The Bluegrass Situation, SiriusXM’s The Loft, and more. Atlanta Junior Rowing

Association was founded in 1988 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit club sport dedicated to providing rowing opportunities for high school students throughout Metro Atlanta. The program started as a small club rowing out of the Atlanta Rowing Club’s boathouse. By the late 1990s, AJRA had grown so much that it needed its own boathouse. In the fall of 2000, the club negotiated with the City of Roswell to construct a boathouse at its present address on Azalea Drive. AJRA has since grown in size and today has more than 200 rowers from middle schools and high schools throughout the Atlanta area. Celebrating its 28th year of rowing on the Chattahoochee with the 2015-16 season, AJRA is the largest and most successful high school rowing program in Georgia. High schools represented include Roswell, Walton, Johns Creek, Milton, Cambridge, Northview, Pope, Centennial, Milton, Galloway, Alpharetta, Blessed Trinity, Mount Vernon, Westminster, Woodward and many others. ABOUT ROWING Rowing is a centuries-old sport steeped in tradition, which trac-

es its origins back to ancient times. The beginnings of the modern version of the sport date to the early 18th century, when rowing saw the creation of the two most historic races in the sport: the Oxford-Cambridge boat race in 1829 and the Henley Royal Regatta in 1839. As an Olympic sport, rowing was slated to take place in the first modern Olympics in Athens in 1896, but due to bad weather, did not make its first appearance until the Paris Olympics in 1900. In recent times, rowing has seen a tremendous surge in popularity at both the high school and college levels. The teamwork and camaraderie involved in the sport at every level continue to foster friendships and still remain the main reasons for the popularity of the sport. Rowing is about striving for individual excellence and striving to achieve as a group of athletes. Rowers push themselves and each other – with a lot of help from great coaches and strong coxswains The coxswain of a boat is pivotal to building a superior team. Rowing is a year-long sport that consists of three basic seasons: fall, winter, and spring. Fall races are called head races and generally take place on rivers. Head races are three to five kilometers long, which means a rower typically races for

15 to 25 minutes. Head racing is a timed event with each boat starting approximately 30 seconds apart. The boat with the fastest time wins. The winter season is about conditioning. Practices are spent training indoors on a rowing machine called the ergometer. In recent years, indoor ergometer events have become popular during the winter season. The Atlanta Erg sprints are held at Georgia Tech each year which is a fun competition to bridge our seasons with. Spring races are called sprint races. They are usually rowed on a buoyed, six-lane course. Each year they run the Atlanta “Row for a Cure” in September to support breast cancer services for under-privileged local women. They participate in “Adopt A Road,” as well. AJRA supports Adopt A Road every year. According to a member, “We are lucky to have the good fortune of being located in the City of Roswell. The City of Roswell is inviting the community to participate in the annual celebration of National Arts and Humanities month in October. Each year the City partners with more than 25 different organizations to compile a complete list of arts events that are open to the public during the month of October. There will be many ways to participate in the coming months in addition to attending events in October. In 2015, Arts Month is being expanded to include “Art in the City” which is an exhibition of local artists in local establishments throughout the City. Some of the immediate ways to get involved include: •Submit an Event – If you are planning an event in October that is open to the public and related arts and humanities, you can submit the details for consideration in marketing materials. The Roswell Arts Commission will award three $100 Creative Competition Awards to the organizations or individuals that propose an innovative arts idea for this year’s celebration. •Apply to be an Artist for “Art in the City” – Any artist that lives or works in Roswell is invited to submit an application to have their work on display for “Art in the City.” Artists will be matched with sponsor organizations such as private businesses and municipal buildings and then display their work during the exhibition period. •Apply to be a Host for “Art in the City” – Restaurants, retail shops, banks and other establishments are asked to consider using their walls, gardens, and other spaces to host an exhibition of local art. Host organizations will be matched to artists based on the size and space available. A list of locations that are hosting artwork will be made available to the public. I’ve said it many

times before: I am a picky eater. When I go out to eat, it’s pretty normal for me to only see one or two things on a menu that I am interested in ordering. It’s a curse, really — but it makes for a pretty quick decision! So when I go to a restaurant and actually see multiple dishes that I like, I get pretty excited. Such was the case at Nosh Table & Tap in Roswell. Pork or fish tacos, gyros, chicken and waffles, rasta pasta, pig and grits, about half of a dozen different salads,the “Ricky Ricardo,” “The Hasselhoff,” a daily soup, and their own house made Nosh chips with dipping sauces you have to try. Check out their full menu for yourself to see the variety (and have a chuckle over some of the unique names for their dishes)! The Nosh portion of the restaurant is open now, but they are working on building out location next door to become the Tap for a bar-like setting. Nosh Table and Tap has a very warm, welcoming and family friendly atmosphere, while still feeling upscale. The staff was very welcoming and informative. far from your mind this time of year, but the need to protect your home, cars, family and business doesn’t end when the weather gets warm. In fact, summer brings specific insurance needs, and recent changes in Roswell mean it may pay to review your coverage.

Summertime also means bringing out all your other warm-weather toys, such as boats, RVs, campers, motorcycles, jet skis and ATVs. It’s no fun to think about accidents, but the fact is, if the unexpected occurs, do you have enough coverage to protect you and your family?

For one, if you own a golf cart, you can enjoy using it outside your community beginning July 1, when a new law allowing carts on designated public streets in the City of Roswell takes effect. Once confined to golf course communities, golf carts may be driven on public roadways with posted speeds limits of 25 mph or less.

Personal liability insurance can cover you if an accident happens that costs more than your primary insurance limits. It also can fill in other coverage gaps, such as those for libel, slander or defamation of character, international claims and attorney fees.

Your cart must be outfitted as per Georgia law, including such safety equipment as a reverse warning system, reflectors, horns, hip restraints or seat belts, and brake lights if you intend to drive at night. You must register your cart with the city and pay a $15 fee once every five years. And, of course, your cart must be properly insured. Keep in mind that your home or auto policy likely will not cover your golf cart when it is driven on public roads.

Finally, Roswell’s fire safety designation was just upgraded thanks to the quality of its services. SHORT GAME

A golfer serious about lowering scores should develop a reliable short game, which includes putting, chipping pitching, bunker shots and lob shots. Spin and height of trajectory influence results. For example, putts and chips are ideally played with overspin. The stroke is a rhythmic back and forth on line movement. The hands lead the clubhead back with a cupped left wrist, causing a slightly closed clubface. The hands again lead the clubhead forward with a cupped right wrist that squares the clubface. The force of a smooth pull through impact determines distance. The hands are slightly ahead of the ball at address, de-lofting the clubface. There is a slight up and down on-line pendulum path, with the clubhead leveling slightly behind the ball to meet the ball on the upswing with a de-lofted clubface to impart over-spin. Memory plays an important part in a sense of distance. One way to develop a sense of distance is to repeatedly putt a ball to a given distance, and then putt another ball a few feet further, remembering the difference. Memory plays an important role related to ‘reading the green.’ One reads the green prior to stroking a putt or chip and considers how to break, grain and slope to influence results. Over time and considerable practice, one memorizes subtle body movements and feeling. Another factor determining the level of skill is visualization. A golfer learns to ‘see’ the line, and responds with precise body and mental alignment. What is felt intuitively registers a given distance with a corresponding required level of force. The act of seeing a positive result vicariously, prior to stroking a putt or chip, enhances confidence and results. The key to most bunker shots and lob shots is to develop a stroke that imparts height and back-spin. Rather than de-lofting the clubface with the hands ahead of the clubhead, these two shots are played with an extreme laid back or lofted clubface. The palm of the right hand faces the sky at address and through impact. The clubhead swings down and under the ball with the palm of the right hand facing upward. The ball lands softly with little or no roll.

What’s the number one goal

of most of my clients at SFX in Roswell? Lose weight, especially around the middle. Ladies want a tighter tummy. Guys seek a flatter stomach and the sought-after six pack. So how do you get those fitness magazine abs? I’m going to let you in on a secret. Skip the sit-ups. Don’t waste your time doing cardio. Eat whatever you want. There’s just one simple trick (insert sarcasm): drink three ounces of lemon juice with all of your meals. It’s that easy. You see, lemon juice is highly acidic. The citric acid cuts through bodyfat like a hot knife through butter, melting away fat from your midsection. Isn’t the sour taste a small price to pay for getting that sexy six-pack? Now, here’s the bitter truth… If you think that lemon juice is going to help define your abs, I’ve got some ocean-front property in Atlanta to sell to you. Let’s get this straight. There is no quick fix. No miracle pill. No magical fat-burning wrap. No miraculous Seven-Minute Workout. The quick fix solution is foolish for any exercise program, but

it’s especially true of abdominals. The only way you’re going to see a ripple in your abs is through – in order - diet, cardio and blasting those abs in the gym. Despite the lemon juice lie, it is true that you don’t need to do a lot of sit-ups. They’re okay in moderation, but your ab routine should consist of a lot more rotational moves with a cable, resistance band or medicine ball. Those exercises, done on your feet, are far more functional, leading to a leaner body and trimmer waistline. Like sit-ups, long distance cardio is over-rated. Keep your running time under 30 minutes, but include some intervals, not just slow, steady state. Increased intensity will thrust you into EPOC – Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption. Reach that zone and your metabolism revs higher for up to 48 hours. Diet accounts for about 70% of your results. You have to drop the sugary snacks and fat-laden chips and dips. Limit alcohol consumption. Include protein with EVERY meal. To process protein your body burns additional calories and it lowers the spike in blood sugar levels that carbs can cause. “Diet” comes down to making smart, informed choices and moderation. You won’t change your body without making sacrifices. You need to make better choices and do it CONSISTENTLY – not just before your high school reunion, a wedding or a trip to the Bahamas.

will last through September, and it is important to remember to protect our pets from the heat in these final “dog days” of summer. There have been numerous incidents of good Samaritans calling 911 to rescue dogs left inside hot cars around Roswell. Normal temperature for dogs averages 101.5F. If their temperature is over 105F, they can suffer from “heat stroke.” When a dog is overheated, it cannot sweat to cool itself like people do. They rely on panting to help decrease their body temperature. When the outside temperature keeps rising, panting cannot help them. Dogs can get overheated in many ways: 1) Left outside without shade and water on a hot day. Remember that shade changes throughout the day. If dogs are attached to a tether, they could either get tangled and not be able to reach shade, or the shade can move beyond their reach. Water bowls can be knocked over. Make sure to take precautions, and ideally leave them inside with A/C.

windows doesn’t help. Many responsible, loving dog owners have had their dogs die from heat stroke because they thought they were leaving them in the car “for just a minute”. Some dogs are inadvertently forgotten. I have a veterinary friend that changed her routine one morning and forgot that she had two sleeping dogs in the back seat. Tragically, they both died. If you are taking your dogs with you in the car, make sure to leave a reminder of them in the front seat with you near your purse/ cell phone/briefcase. Seeing a leash or dog toy before you leave the car will remind you that you have a sleeping dog in the back seat. 4) Exercising your dog on a hot, humid day. It is best to run with your dogs and play with them in the yard during cooler times of day. If the pavement is hot to touch, it is not a good time. Make sure they always have access to shade and water and watch for signs that they are getting tired or overheated. 5) Breed predispositions. Certain breeds are more likely to get heat stroke. Brachycephalic (short-nosed) dogs like Bulldogs, Pugs, Boston Terriers, and Lhasa Apsos cannot pant as effectively as other dogs.

2) Left inside without A/C on. Dogs have died in hot houses because the A/C was left off or turned down on a hot day. Small, enclosed spaces without good ventilation are also a problem.

6) Underlying medical conditions. Overweight dogs, and those with heart conditions or breathing problems will overheat more quickly.

3) Left inside a car. The car’s temperature can reach over 117F even on a 72F day! Studies repeatedly show that cracking the

in Georgia will be entering a new era starting July 1st, 2015 due to the new direct access law that was passed this Spring by the Georgia state legislature. This law, known as HR505, will allow Georgia PTs to practice more autonomously and become primary caregivers to Georgia residents. The road to direct access in Georgia has been long and passionately opposed by some healthcare providers. Fortunately, there was a small group of devoted PTs that worked tirelessly, staying focused on the long-term goal of greater consumer access to healthcare. What does a PT really do, and why is direct access important for Georgia? There are lot of misconceptions and general lack of public knowledge about the profession. According to the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), a PT is a highly trained, licensed professional that can help reduce pain and improve or restore mobility. They perform in-depth assessments and evaluations to develop treatment plans and goals for the patients’ impairments.

PTs are educated and trained to treat patients from birth to adult. A few of the places PTs practice includes: schools, factories, hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, home health, outpatient clinics, work settings, wheelchair seating clinics, and sports/fitness facilities. PTs are movement experts as they are trained to evaluate muscle strength, posture, flexibility, gait, balance, fall risk, imbalance, asymmetry, range of motion, sensation, pain patterns, ergonomics, and biomechanics. Prevention and wellness is another area PTs can serve as great assets to Georgia residents. There is strong research from the medical community that solidifies how important PTs can be to all age groups. One example is the active adult population. They want to play golf and tennis, work out at the gym, swim, travel, run, walk and volunteer. PTs are well-trained at preventing loss of function and reducing pain/fall risk so mature adults can maintain the active lifestyles they enjoy. The passing of HR505 allows Georgia residents to seek out PT evaluations and treatment without physician referrals. Based on research in other states with direct access, this has resulted in reduced healthcare costs. Direct access to physical therapy for Georgia has the potential to improve quality of life for all residents.

Low Level Laser Therapy (Cold Laser)

Low level laser or Cold laser is a fairly new and accepted form of treatment for many different injuries or symptoms. Most people think that a laser is used to cut or damage tissue. However, low level laser therapy (LLLT) is a laser light that generates no heat or thermal effects. Instead of causing cellular damage, the LLLT causes cellular repair and healing, at a rapid rate. Laser is an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. A true laser is both monochromatic (single color wavelength) and coherent (wavelengths in-phase). Although all levels of light can have biological effect, most laser research suggests that the most advantageous levels of stimulation for healing purposes occur in a very specific range for optimal wavelength for cellular repair. There are several mechanisms involved that demonstrate why the laser has been so successful. At the cellular level, the laser stimulates collagen fiber production and protein synthesis. Increased ATP production by the mitochondria, which are the powerhouse of each cell, is noted. With more energy, and increased oxygen consumption, the cell may utilize this fuel to operate and function at a higher level and repair faster. Changes in cell membrane permeability allow increased nutrients into the cell. Improved blood circulation and increased lymphatic flow aid in removal of inflammation and edema. These cellular changes help to heal the cells, therefore

decreasing pain. The LLLT also reduces pain with direct neurological involvement. Homeostatic balance, with the calcium (Ca+), sodium (Na+) and potassium (K+) ions, is restored across the cell membrane of the nerve cell. This leads to increased action potential, increased endorphins (powerful natural pain relievers), and decreased bradychinines (chemical irritants) levels. The FDA has recognized and approved LLLT treatment. We have utilized a 635nm Low Level Laser to successfully treat carpel tunnel syndrome, sciatica, low back pain, disc issues, headaches, sinus conditions, broken bones, tennis elbow, ACL/knee injuries, plantar fascitis, wound healing, vascular problems and various other joint and muscular injuries. To increase the therapeutic benefit and success (greater than 91%) of both acute and chronic conditions, we also employ a process called Neurological Stacking. This involves treating the nerves that supply the area of injury at several levels. Tracing the nerve back to the spine and brain links the healing process for better, faster results. This painless treatment has no known side effects; however it should not be used directly in the eyes. Benefits are seen in all ages. Speed of recovery is dependent on the amount of tissue damage and to some extent, patient age. In summary, Low Level Laser Therapy is a remarkable tool for many health issues or injuries. When performed with a systematic, logical and thorough approach, the results are often life changing.

Big Creek Park Freeride Area is a City of Roswell park with trails maintained by the Roswell-Alpharetta Mountain Biking Organization.

The Roswell/Alpharetta Mountain Biking Organiza-

tion (RAMBO) Chapter of the Southern Off Road Biking Association (SORBA) is a volunteer organization dedicated to improving off road biking recreational opportunities through advocacy for quality trail systems. RAMBO fosters relationships with community leaders & land managers, promotes volunteerism, and outdoor recreation that is consistent with environmental protection, thereby strengthening the community and quality of life. Toward these ends, RAMBO/SORBA has the following goals: 1. Activities and Programs. To provide its members and the general public with opportunities to steward, care for, and create trails on the Southeast’s open spaces. We offer trail maintenance work days, bicycle courtesy patrols, group rides, educational programs and family activities designed to promote the responsible use of public trails by mountain bikers. 2. Environmental Protection. To provide leadership in protection and preservation of the environment by advocating the development of informed public policy, by advocating the development of sustainable trail system and by encouraging the establishment and management of protected land and water areas within SORBA’s geographical area.

3. Organization. To provide an organization of volunteers and professionals who will manage SORBA’s facilities and programs, encourage public respect for the environment

and mountain biking, offer SORBA’s expertise to others, and support individual contributions in realizing SORBA’s goals. The 2015 Trail Director for Roswell Is Jim Cullen. BIG CREEK FREERIDE: A City of Roswell Park The trail is designed with gravity riders in mind, and offers a number of progressive features designed to build confidence and expertise in more advanced trail skills. The “Gully” trail in the Freeride section of Big Creek Park is popular with those seeking gravity-fed thrills. 11 trails in the Freeride area are ‘EXPERT level’, with various lines having optional ‘Expert Only’ features and drops. TRAILS • Gully • Lunch Line • Dirt Jumps • Honor Roll (New) • Slalom They strongly encourage riders to wear a full face helmet, knee and elbow pads, lower seatposts, walk the trail BEFORE riding it to become familiar with the terrain and features, and go ONLY in the direction posted on signs. Do NOT walk or ride up a downhill-only trail. Big Creek Freeride continues to evolve giving riders new jumps, features, and alternate lines. Stay in touch with the Freeride Group on Facebook. The course offers progressive trail features, so riders can grow their skills and confidence over time.
