Rustic Trades workshop
Big Screen in a Small Town Local custom furniture shop chosen for Spielberg project.
A
A year and a half ago, Rustic Trades Furniture Shop was handpicked as the set for a high production Stephen Spielberg project coming to AppleTV+. The episode was just released in April, and it is streaming now right here.
The Amazing Stories Episode, “The Dynoman and the Volt” starring the late Robert Forester, directed by Susanna Fogel and lead executive producer, Steven Spielberg, tells the story of a young boy and his grandfather as they are transformed by the arrival of a mysterious ring ordered from a comic book 60 years ago. The main character, Joe Harris, (Robert Forester) loved working at a local wood shop creating furniture. The “Amazing Stories” production team needed a quaint, wood shop with a lot of character as a backdrop for the woodworking scenes. Rustic Trades crafts the furniture
8
sold in their Roswell store in their work shop, which is nestled in the small town of Flowery Branch, and it was the perfect setting. View the episode now on AppleTV+.
How did a local Roswell furniture store land a role in the show? The production company scouted out Rustic Trades, after stumbling across their website, and looking through their social media photos. They felt the RT shop would be the right setting for the episode, so they contacted the owner Clay to set up a walk-through. After visiting the shop with the director, producer and cinematogra-
pher, everything started moving forward. During the pre-filming stage, their team came out to mock up sets and to walk through the scenes in person. Following that, they brought a group out to build part of the film set right in the wood shop.
Filming Days At the Shop Filming consisted of two very long days in our wood shop. Rustic Trades founder Clay Adams, production director Josh Lavigne, and a few craftsmen were asked to be featured by acting in the episode. “It was surreal,” Clay Adams recounts his experience on set, “We showed up for filming and there we were, acting a scene with Robert Forester, who I knew from Breaking Bad.” When asked about the filming process, Clay said, “Seeing the amount of crew it takes to shoot a major production film was a surprise to me. I counted almost 50 people there at one time, all crammed in and around our little wood shop. The crew staff were so unbelievably friendly and grateful. I was visiting with the writer of the episode, Peter Ackerman, talking about the film only to discover he was the writer of my kids favorite movie, Ice Age! What an experience! ” Craftsman Zach Bush reflected on his perspective of the experience, “From the moment we stepped off the shuttle the first day, I can say we had a great time, both on and off set. The Amazing Stories staff did an awesome job at guiding us throughout the show. From the designers picking out our outfits to the crew directing us when the cameras were rolling. Offset we filled our time with talking with crew members, playing guitar, reading, telling jokes and enjoying the seemingly endless supply of food. I would do it again in a heartbeat!” As Josh Lavigne, Rustic Trades production director, recounted the filming experience, he men-

tioned “Unless you’re in the movie industry you really have no way of knowing how much time and effort goes into the end product. From sending out the location scouts, to having the director walk-through and map out each shot weeks and months in advance so no detail was overlooked. They put so much effort and collaboration into making things exactly the envision them. Then, after all the weeks of prep and planning for a couple days of shooting, and only 5-10 minutes of actual footage. It was definitely eye opening for how much actually goes into filming!” When asked his biggest takeaway, Josh said he will always remember how “down to earth and kind the cast and crew were.” From talking with the actors on breaks to sitting in ‘video village’ watching them film, Josh remarks everyone was extremely kind. At one point, one of the assistant directors said, ‘I don’t care where you are or where you want to stand as long as you’re not in the way when they yell action!’ It was really a great experience and I am really excited that Rustic Trades and our crew was able to be a part of it!” Rustic Trades Furniture specializes in building high-quality custom furniture out of their workshop in Flowery Branch to sell in their retail showroom in Roswell.

TO BASICS The Martins only use sustainable, non-certified organic farming techniques and 100% natural fertilizers, compost, and pest control. The team practices natural preventative measures, like insect netting, crop rotation, cover cropping, and planting beneficial crops that attract natural pest predators (beneficial insects).

Did you know there’s a seven acre working farm in the Roswell historic district, with goats, chickens, sheep, and vegetable garden farm stand? MARTIN’S GARDEN | 410 Coleman Road www.martinsgardenacf.com The Coleman family (‘Coleman Road’) had once owned over 125 acres in Roswell’s historic district. For about 65 years, Ora Coleman managed his 7-acre portion of the family’s land, and he shared his spirit, farm animals, and vegetables generously with his neighbors, until
he passed in 2012. Shari and Tony Martin purchased the land from the estate of Mr. Ora Coleman, and were successful in rezoning the property to allow the farm to carry on. They typically sell vegetables and bouquets of flowers each Saturday from May through October at Roswell Farmers & Artisans Market, onsite, and online.
Flower varieties range from early Spring Ranunculus, Alliums, Anemones, Daffodils and Snapdragons to Summer's colorful Zinnias, Stock, Cosmos, Celosia, then onto Fall's Dahlias, Chrysanthemums, Amaranth and many more varieties in between.

Thank you! Mike Thomas Group, a local restaurant consulting firm, launched The School Meals Program in collaboration with several parents from Vickery Mill Elementary 2 months ago.

This School Meals Program (SMP) story is the story that just keeps on giving. Launched in the first few days of the schools’ COVID19 closings, this program has grown from a couple of elementary schools and a handful of participating restaurants to one of Roswell’s most successful COVID19 grassroots relief initiative. Launched two months ago, on March 13, 2020, to provide lunches to students out of school, and to mitigate the effects of COVID19 on the local restaurant industry. The program is not affiliated with nor represents the schools or restaurant partners involved. All monies for meals are handled directly by the restaurant partner. In two short weeks, by the end of March, SMP had continued to gain popularity, by then serving seven schools with 15 restaurants. As of March 30, 2020, the program had generated over $15,000 in revenue for its restaurant partners and served thousands of meals. “In the beginning, when we learned students were not going back to school, it was our goal to give meals to students in need until the end of the school year,” explains Mike Thomas, co- founder of the SMP. “I am so proud to say, thanks to the enormous support from our community and our generous restaurant partners, we did it!

By May 22, SMP will have generated $50,000 in revenue for local restaurants and 10,000 meals for students. “I was amazed by the outpouring of generosity and although it was our plan originally to finish the end of May, when school was to let out. But because of the requests by restaurants and families, we are very proud to announce the program will continue!”

acts swiftly so her students ‘didn’t miss a beat.’ (pun intended)
On March 12th Fulton County Schools reopened for the day, but around 2:30 that afternoon Atlanta Dance Central’s team didn’t feel comfortable bringing students into the studio. Two hectic hours later ADC launched its first virtual dance class and has been virtually online (pun intended) ever since. The Roswell school was one of the first dance studios in the US to move their classes to a virtual platform and their model has been followed by studios all across the country.

and receive direct feedback about their dancing”, says Charlotte. ADC’s virtual classroom includes much more than just an online dance class. Team members meet one on one with dancers each week, host “Connect” time for the dancers to chat, lead dance classes and socials for parents, and create dance challenges for the whole family.
Forty of the studio’s Company dancers gathered on Zoom to rehearse over Spring Break so they are prepared to take the stage whenever they can. “It means so much as a parent to be able to tell our dancers that we know one special event that won’t be canceled,” says ADC mom, Staci Bolton.
Students can have coffee or story time with Charlotte and non-dancing siblings can workout with Coach Jeremy, a Level 2 CrossFit trainer and CrossFit kids trainer. The whole world can get involved in the fun with two Facebook Live dance parties each week and costumed Princess Party every Friday. Parents are very appreciative of the outstanding work of the ADC team.
Each ADC dancer has created their own dance space at home and their technique is progressing, in spite of the conditions. “We want to ensure our dancers still receive the very best dance education. Students submit homework assignments online
“You were the first to jump into action, to help keep life going for my kids. It’s been such a positive, life giving part of my daughter’s day,” says Stephanie Buice, a local mom whose daughter dances with ADC. www.atlantadancecentral.com

FOOTBALL
Roswell High School Principal Dr. Robert Shaw and the school’s Athletic Director Ben Sutter are pleased to announce that Chris Prewett will be taking over the helm as Head Football Coach for the Hornets.
Prewett graduated from LaGrange College in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. He also earned his Master of Arts in Teaching from LaGrange College in 2014.
RHS’ previous Head Coach Matt Kemper was hired in March to take over the reins of the football program at Etowah; and Prewett served as the Hornets’ Defensive Coordinator since 2017, producing some of the top defenses in the state in each of his years at Roswell.
Prior to coming to Roswell Prewett was in the same position at Johns Creek High School for two seasons, and one season prior to that at Pope High School. While young, Prewett has proven himself pretty quickly to a sharp football IQ, the ability to work with our young athletes, and earned the respect from those he works alongside.
“Coach Prewett has proven himself in just a short period of time that he is one of the top defensive minds in the high school football,” said Sutter. “The players are excited, the administration is excited, and I know that the fans will be excited to see what levels Coach Prewett can lead the Hornet Football team to in the upcoming years.” Prewett is a native of Warner Robins, Ga., and graduated from Houston County High School. After playing high school football, he went on to play at LaGrange College in LaGrange, Ga., where he was a four-year letterman.
“The entire Roswell football program, at all levels, has enjoyed success on and off the field over the last few years. I am excited about the future of Roswell football under Coach Prewett’s leadership,” said Shaw. “As the Hornets began transitioning into the new football season, the Hornets are in good hands.” Coach Prewett is married to Ashley Prewett and they have one daughter, Blakely.

Caroline Gryder - used her 3D printer to help healthcare workers protect themselves on the front lines.
Caroline Gryder - wrapping up her junior year at Fellowship Christian School - used her 3D printer to help create face shields for health care professionals. Caroline’s father Glenn Gryder mentioned that his friend, Ken Long, an executive with Agape Senior Living in Tupelo, MS who oversees a dozen facilities, needed help. He was having trouble sourcing face shields for his staff attending to sick patients. While doing some research on the web he came across the website Matter Hackers and found plans for shields that could be 3D printed. On April 6th Ken posted a request through Facebook asking anyone with 3D printers if they were willing to help.Later that day she downloaded the North American plans from a resource site with a design created in Sweden. 3DVerkstan zrvkcfyatdmn@in.docparser.com and started the setup. The first one printed looks like the one in the photo above. The part she is printing is the piece that attaches to the head. The part covering the face is plastic projector sheet from the office supply store. On the April 7th Caroline sent the first 16 to Ken’s facility. To

date, as of April 21st she has sent 106 total and is printing with different colors now. The goal for the Agape facilities is 300 shields total. Ken has other contributors and will easily reach the goal. He is sharing the shields with smaller competitors in his area that need them urgently. As Ken says “We are all in this together”. Caroline is excited to see the shields arrived and are being put to good use! Please reach out if any facilities in the Roswell Area need these - she can make more! Thank you, Glenn Gryder (Caroline’s Dad) mggryder@gmail.com.als.

Photo shown is her Freshman year t Centennial, when she won Miss Teen India Georgia, Miss Teen India USA, and 1st runner up Miss Congeniality.
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced Wednesday that Cystal Favorito of Centennial High School, has been awarded a $2,500 scholarships as part of its 2020 program. Crystal Favorito earned the title ‘Miss Teen India’ - Georgia 2016 was first runner up for Miss Teen India USA. Georgia has 72 winners out of 2,500 nationwide. Winners were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high-school counselors who judged informa-
tion submitted by both finalists and CRYSTAL their high schools: FAVORITO academic records, including difficulty of subjects studied and grades earned; scores from the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test; contributions and leadership in school and community activities; an essay written by the finalist; and a recommendation written by a high-school official.
Only three students from Fulton County were named Georgia Scholars - one of them, Sophia Woodrow, is a student at Centennial High School class of 2020. One graduating senior from Centennial High School has been recognized as a 2020 Georgia Scholar by the Georgia Department of Education. Sophia Woodrow, of Centennial High School, was among 295 honorees announced Monday by Georgia School Superintendent Richard Woods. Through the Georgia Scholar program, the Georgia Department of Education Education’s Excellence Recognition office identifies and honors high school seniors who have achieved excellence in school and community life. Students eligible for Georgia Scholar recognition are high school seniors who exhibit excellence in all phases of school life, in community activities, and in the home.
30
These students have carried exemplary course loads during their four years of high school; performed excel-
lently in all courses; successfully participated in interscholastic SOPHIA events at their schools and in their WOODROW communities; and have assumed roles in extracurricular activities sponsored by their schools. Each Georgia Scholar receives a seal for his or her diploma. “It is always special to recognize a new class of Georgia Scholars, but I have to say it is even more meaningful to recognize these students from the class of 2020,” Woods said. “In the face of disappointing circumstances and delayed plans, these students have displayed great resilience, maturity, and grace. I am honored to recognize their accomplishments and wish them well as they proceed into futures that, despite this temporary setback, are still worthy of great hope.”

Friends of Mimosa Hall & Gardens A group of grassroots Roswell residents provided the momentum behind the City of Roswell’s purchase of Mimosa Hall & Gardens from a private owner in 2017. The group formed Friends of Mimosa Hall (FOMH) and are focused on sustainable preservation of the massive historic home and property. FOMH’s current effort is raising funds for the added costs of a solar roof, which would make Roswell home to the oldest ‘net zero’ home in the U.S. The Millennials Project (10U40) designated FOMH as its beneficiary of proceeds from the 10U40 Awards event because its ‘friends’ are committed to sustainable restoration. This is right in line with Millennials’ values. View the FOMH video of their Earth Day message.
