HOMETOWN JUBILEE 2016 The City of Milton and Crabapple Community Association hosted the 2nd Annual Milton Hometown Jubilee on May 7! This signature festival kicked off the spring festival season in Milton and celebrated the best of the Crabapple historic district. Residents enjoyed music from the Chuck Nation Band, food and drink pairings from a variety of local restaurants, shopping, old fashioned games for kids, and even a firetruck pull!

CRABAPPLE COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION’S annual 4th of July Walking Parade will be held again this year on Saturday, July 2nd in downtown Crabapple at Broadwell Pavilion, 10am to Noon. Parade Marshall is Mayor Joe Lockwood. Dogs, wheelchairs, strollers, bikes, trikes, family and friends young and old---everybody come out to celebrate the red, white and blue. For more information and to register, visit the Crabapple Community Association’s Facebook page! Celebrate Independence Day with family and friends at Wills Park on Monday, July 4! Alpharetta Recreation and Parks will host an evening of entertainment and children’s activities on the lawn and field behind Alpharetta Community Center from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., with a spectacular fireworks display to begin at dusk!

Enjoy inflatables, face painting, balloon animals and fun in the children’s area, sponsored by Alpharetta Golden Age Club, with wristbands available for nominal fees. Food vendors located throughout the park will serve festive fare from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., including barbeque, hot dogs, hamburgers, Mediterranean style dishes, wood-fired pizza, tacos, grilled cheese, kettle corn, tapas, old fashioned lemonade, Italian ice, snow balls, ice cream and shaved ice delights! Alpharetta City Band is set to perform patriotic tunes starting at 6 p.m., followed by local band, Serious Business, playing classic rock and new country favorites. Red, white and blue glow sticks sold by Alpharetta’s Police Explorers will be a fundraiser for new uniforms and training materials. Top off the night relaxing in your lawn chair as we kick off a spectacular July 4th fireworks show! Here is important information to keep in mind for your July 4th event plans at Wills Park:

Enhancing your

landscape

ENHANCING THE LANDSCAPE around your home is an enjoyable hobby that can be done gradually as your time permits. First, assess your landscape by walking around deciding what you like or donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like about your existing property. This will help you plan what plants to remove or add. If the existing shrubs require a lot of pruning every year and now look like green meatballs, consider replacing them with plants that are more size appropriate and require less or no pruning to keep them attractive. Often landscapes have too many green plants so if you prefer a more unique landscape, consider using plants with different color leaves and contrasting textures to add interest. A beautiful landscape includes complimentary plant groupings blooming multiple seasons to create beauty all year. There are even plants that will bloom in the winter or add interesting stem color. While selecting plants for your landscape may seem to be a daunting task, it need not be. Stroll through your favorite

garden center and look for plants that catch your eye. Then decide where on your property the various plants will go. Read the signs in front of the plants for insight on how large the plants grow, what color they bloom, and if they like full sun or shadier conditions, if they are fragrant and whether they are deer resistant and drought tolerant. Your garden center plant professional can help you in this selection process or have a staff landscape designer visit you at your home. Having a beautiful and colorful landscape is gratifying. You and your children may enjoy preparing dinner with herbs that you grow in your garden. Snip a few flowers out of your landscape and place them in a vase to enjoy while you dine. Running and other high-impact exercises were once thought to be the major cause of arthritis. We now know that’s not completely true. In fact, it may be the lack of physical exercise that can lead to worsening arthritic symptoms. When pain strikes in a hip, knee, ankle or other joint, human nature is to want to avoid doing things that could aggravate the pain. Although that seems logical, this inactivity could actually exacerbate the condition by leading to muscle atrophy and joint stiffness. For those experiencing arthritic pain, frequent walks or occasional runs prescribed by a trusted doctor and possibly with a trainer’s help can be a good first step to help ease the pain and improve symptoms, including inflammation. What’s the magic number for daily steps? Many people have been told they need 10,000 steps a day, but recent evidence shows that just 6,000 steps per day, or roughly three miles, is the perfect number. If you’re starting off, aim for 3,000 steps and gradually increase your steps. The more you walk or run, the better off you may be. How can a runner and walkers ward off arthritis? While its specific cause is only now being understood, obesity, aging, anatomy, genetics and prior injuries are all culprits in the onset of arthritis. Runners and walkers who keep the pounds off and instead pound the sidewalk are doing themselves a lot of good if done smartly. A study published in the Arthritis Research & Therapy found that some runners in their 60s, 70s and older, who ran an average of 26 miles a week experienced 25 percent less pain than those who were inactive. However, it may differ among individual runners with arthritis; a more moderate 6-10 miles per week in addition to cycling or other cross training may be more beneficial. Am I going to cause wear and tear on my joints? Running and walking is good for the health of your joints because it keeps the muscles strong and well balanced. But make sure you’ve got the proper shoes and that you understand proper running form. How does exercise help the arthritis sufferer? Running and other proper exercise helps build muscles that dynamically protect against joint damage associated with common types of arthritis and the resultant pain and stiffness. Arthritis sufferers who maintain a good range of motion in their joints will allow them to move less stiffly and with less pain and fight back against the progression of arthritis. And always aim for intelligent, regular and moderate pain-free exercise.

THE TIME IS HERE AGAIN for those pesky critters that love to hitch a ride on our pets for a blood meal. We are all familiar with the battle against fleas. Thank goodness for the more modern topical and internal medications that aid in controlling the flea population on our pets and in our homes. Then there is the problem of ticks. Many of the topicals aid in killing the ticks as well, but we hate to find these bugs any where near us or our pets, and The Brown Dog Tick can live and develop in your home without ever leaving as long as they have a host, Your pet!! These unfavorable bugs can feed on birds, mammals, amphibians and reptiles. Ticks cause various diseases in pets as well as people, but did you know that a single tick can cause paralysis in your K-9 friend! Tick bite paralysis is caused by a potent toxin that is released through the saliva of certain species of ticks. This toxin is released into the blood stream of the pet when the tick latches on for a blood meal. The toxin directly affects the nervous system causing paralysis.

Symptoms vary, but can include regurgitation of food, lethargy and weakness in the hind limbs eventually leading to paralysis. The treatment is usually simple. Remove the tick, although every pet is different and treatments may vary. Always see your veterinarian if you notice any abnormalities. The best defense is to check your pet[s] all over on a daily basis. Focus around the eyes and in or around the ears. Tweezers work well to remove a tick. Get as close to the skin as possible with the tweezers. Pull the tick off. The goal is to try and remove its mouth.Clean the area where the tick was with peroxide or some form of antiseptic. It doesn’t hurt to put a topical antibiotic on the area for a few days as well. It is also important to do a self-check. Lyme disease in people can have very severe consequences. A tick bite can easily go undetected. Transference can occur between humans and animals. Beaware and on the lookout, and have a tick free summer!!

Vitamin D is called “The Sunshine Vitamin” because the body produces it when UVB rays react with cholesterol in the skin. In its active form (calcitriol), Vitamin D stimulates the intestinal absorption of calcium and up-regulates genes that control up to 80 metabolic processes, including DNA repair and immune function. Children who take just 1,200 IUs of Vitamin D3 daily during flu season reduce their risk of getting the flu by 40 percent, proving Vitamin D3 is an effective alternative to the flu vaccine. Vitamin D3 also prevents cavities in children because of its calcium absorption and antimicrobial properties. Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to fibromyalgia, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, depression, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s, MS, obesity, Alzheimer’s and numerous cancers, including breast, colon, prostate and lymph. A key preventative tool against cancer, Vitamin D triggers apoptosis (cell death) in cancer cells. In fact, serum Vitamin D levels of 40 ng/ml have been found to cut the risk of all cancers by 67 percent. Breast cancer patients with Vitamin D levels of just 30 ng/ml are twice as likely to survive than those with lower levels, while men with prostate cancer are found to have Vitamin D levels below 23 ng/ml.

An inexpensive blood test can be used to check serum Vitamin D levels, of which an optimal level is 40 to 70 ng/ml. MILTON’S FIRST RESPONDERS can’t wait to compete; but it’s all in fun. Family, friends, neighbors & the whole community - join us for the city of Milton’s first annual Softball Game and Family Fun Day. Cheer for your team! The main event will pit firefighters and police for the win, but there will be lots of other family friendly activities as well. Hamburgers, hots dogs, snacks and drinks at the concession stand. The first annual game is scheduled for Saturday, June 11th, at Bell Memorial Park 15245 Bell Park Road. 10am to 2pm. Softball Game starts at 11:00am. Kids’ activities will run throughout the day and there will be plenty of food. Admission is free and open to the public so spread the word and invite your friends, family and neighbors to show your support. “We want people to come and have a good time. The firefighters are athletic. Some are still active players. Ultimately, it comes down to we’re both competitive and we want to win.” says Captain Alex Fortner. “Our police team will do what it takes to win as well. The game will surely be competitive.” Said Officer Andrew Noblett. 100% of the proceeds from concessions will benefit Milton First Responders Foundation, miltonfirstresponders.org. Milton First Responders Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not-forprofit Georgia corporation comprised entirely of volunteer citizens. 100% of the profits from fundraising events support their on-going

mission: “To provide financial support for Milton first responder employees injured in the line of duty or enduring a family hardship and to purchase supplementary/non-budgeted equipment and training materials.” In order to raise funds to fulfil their mission and increase community awareness, MFRF is building a team of volunteers willing to offer their time and talents to support various activities throughout the year. MFRF also strives to connect local businesses with services that might benefit our first responders directly. A recent example is local attorney, John Hill, who stepped up in a big way by donating many hours of his time and expertise to assist Milton Firefighters and Police Officers with invaluable legal services. Mr. Hill personally drafted 39 Wills, Powers of Attorney, and Medical Directives for first responders and their spouses. This equates to $25,000 worth of work had he charged for these services. Due to the innate hazards of their professions, it is crucial that first responders have these documents in order to protect their families should the unthinkable happen. Mr. Hill stated that “It was an honor to work for these local heroes.” Milton First Responders Foundation would like to thank Mr. Hill for generously offering his time and services to ensure that our first responders have these important documents in order. CITY OF MILTON FLAGS were lowered for two days in early May to show our sympathy and grief as four local University of Georgia students involved in a tragic car accident were laid to rest. Mayor Joe Lockwood and City Council honored Christina Devon Semeria with her family and friends in celebration of her life on Tuesday, May 3. The flags remained lowered to honor Kayla Leigh Canedo and Brittany Katherine Feldman in celebration of their lives. Our City also honored Halle Grace Scott, who was laid to rest on May 2. "Our community mourns this tragic loss and our hearts go out to the families and friends of those who were involved. Please keep these families in your thoughts and prayers," Mayor Joe Lockwood said. In light of the tragic loss of our three young community members involved in a car accident last night in Athens, all were invited to a candlelight vigil on the front lawn of Milton High School. Friends and family gathered at Birmingham United Methodist Church for memorial services for Milton’s own Christina Devon Semeria. Christina was described as a “sweet, unselfish friend, with big dreams.” A horse lover, Semeria was studying at UGA to become a veterinarian but had recently turned her attention to physical therapy, Crawford said. She was also a skilled songwriter, singer and guitarist who performed at Birmingham United Methodist Church in Alpharetta. “Just know that she loved Jesus with all of her being and carried the boldest of faiths,” said her older brother Nick. “She remained a radiant person shining in God’s love through all of her days.” Prayers and peace for the families and friends of these beautiful young local women.
