NOW OPEN AT CRABAPPLE MARKET:

Rewind in your mind to 11:59 p.m. last New Year's Eve and take inventory: where were you in life? How have things changed around and within you since? As for me, I was essentially a newborn – two weeks fresh out of college with only a very expensive piece of paper to prove it. It wasn't long before Regina invited me to run this magazine in its entirety. I was thrilled (in both excitement and terror) about this "job," which has come to mean so much more. Twelve months ago, I never could have imagined all the kind-hearted, passionately local people I'd be blessed to meet in my first year. On November 5, our rockstar feature photographer Lauren Kress and I went behind the scenes for a photoshoot at Knuckies (p. 17), the new gourmet hoagie shop at Crabapple Market. Founder Todd Broaderick, VPO Brad Evans and their awesome team members were so helpful and so funny – my cheeks hurt from laughter! Brad was kind enough to package up some hoagies for me to take home but – in the spirit of full disclosure – the Original Italian never made it past the parking lot (I couldn't resist). On December 12, realtor Robyn Sprague walked me through the magnificent, for-sale estate (p. 22) owned by Jennifer "Sunshine" Schoenberger, a renowned interior designer who owns Elle + Vreeland Design House in Milton with her business partner Lindsey Hene. The next day, I returned with Lauren for a photoshoot which may or may not have (but definitely) involved a little bit of champagne and a lof ot Tina Turner. We spun it as an early toast to 2020! As we bid adieu to 2019, we welcome not only a new year, but a new decade – our own Roaring Twenties! As you will read in Mayor Lockwood's letter on the next page, we can expect the year 2020 will be even more transformative than the last.

Mayor's Note

STATE OF THE CITY ADDRESS Thursday Jan. 30th Meet & Greet: 6 - 6:45 p.m. State of the City: 7- 8 p.m. To RSVP or live stream, visit:

www.cityofmiltonga.us

It’s hard to believe that another year has come and gone. As we look ahead to our bright future in 2020, it’s important to reflect on the past year and all of the accomplishments that made 2019 so notable. The City has primarily utilized leased commercial space for offices since its incorporation in 2006, with the exception of three fire stations that were inherited from Fulton County (Stations 41, 42, 43). In 2016, the city opened its permanent City Hall in downtown Milton. In 2019, we broke ground on our new Public Safety Complex on Highway 9, which will be home to the Milton Police Department, Milton Municipal Court, and Milton Fire-Rescue Department Station 44. Fire Station 44 is a new station that will serve the Deerfield/Highway 9 community and will eventually replace the current station that Milton Fire-Rescue shares with Alpharetta Fire Station 81 on Webb Bridge Road. The Milton Police Department and Municipal Court are currently located at a leased facility at 13000 Deerfield Parkway. Doing our part to keep Milton green and preserve the rural feel that our residents cherish, we purchased five additional greenspace properties in 2019, totaling more than 154 acres. This land will be used solely for parks, trails and greenspace including conservation land, wildlife habitat and natural areas. With $5.7 million remaining in our Greenspace fund we will continue to focus on properties that address citizens’ desires to protect additional land from development. We’re excited to close on our newest acquisition in early 2020, an 8.1-acre athletic facility on Cox Road. This facility includes two large grass fields for soccer, lacrosse and football, and a half-size turf field. This gives us even more usable athletic fields owned by the city.

We have many projects that will be initiated or completed during the New Year including the grand opening of the Public Safety Complex. The Northeast Crabapple Connector, also known as the Charlotte Drive Extension, is underway, and expected to be completed in Spring 2020. Construction is also expected to begin on three more roundabouts in the City, all on Hopewell Road, and we will be making pedestrian and bike improvements on Cogburn Road. You’ve also undoubtedly seen changes going on all over our Downtown Crabapple. Crabapple Market continues its expansion on Crabapple Road with additional retail, office and residential loft space. On the other side of Broadwell Road, Market District is moving along! This mixed-use development will consist of retail and residences, 80% of which will be dedicated to adults aged 55 and older. It’s an exciting time here in Milton! We hope you’ll stay up to date with everything we have going on in our City by visiting our website (www.cityofmiltonga.us), following us on social media (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram), and signing up for our monthly newsletter or contact us via email (info@cityofmiltonga.us).

Happy New Year!

BLACK HISTORY MONTH • FEBRUARY 2020

"I Am Not A Perfect Man,"

Obama civil rights and protest collage poster, $29, locally. Perfect gift to honor Black History Month in February - this poster is offered by Regency Fine Art & Frame, for $29. Ask them to frame it for you to fit your space. Additionally, the local frame shop has it available in Giclee on Canvas, $195. Designer OO explained the creative process, “Inspired by Obama's humble words "I am not a perfect man, I will not be a perfect president". The vortex is built around a picture taken of him as he announced he was running. The bottom and left spans the arc of the civil rights movement -"I am not a perfect man" reminded me of the 'I am a man signs carried by sanitation workers in their 1968 Memphis strike. Their signs can be seen throughout the piece. Obama's face is made of people attending Obama rallies, king speeches, the campaign, and inauguration. The right side has hundreds of protest images from across the political spectrum. and is intended to reflect Barack's expressed interest in being surrounded by people of opposing political views. This portrait is a digital collage, comprised of images celebrating the genius of a system designed for change and the greatness of the American right to protest. It took the artist about 2.5 months to create.

BEARS BRING IN THE DOGS A little pet therapy goes a long way at Cambridge High School. For the 4th year, local nonprofit, Canine Assistants, brought in several support dogs to help students destress during the week before final exams. It is a win-win for both the organization and the school as the socialization helps the dogs in training acclimate to public places and the students’ spirits are lifted.

OLDE BLIND DOG CORNHOLE Supporting Milton veterans' memorial project

The Olde Blind Dog Irish Pub Cornhole League donated $2500 to Milton Veterans Memorial Markers, Inc (503c3) prior to Veterans Day, in a ceremony following retrieval of patriotic markers honoring local veterans. MVMM funds, manufactures, and maintains the more than 600 white wooden markers that are installed in key locations in Milton for 2-week periods over Memorial Day and Veterans Day. The League was founded in 2019 to support the work of the MVMM. It raises money through registration fees from summer and fall leagues. Approximately 100 players participate, playing in the park at Crabapple Market. “The players are proud to support such a worthy cause while participating in a fun community event,” said Ron Wallace, owner of the Olde Blind Dog.

SIX ATHLETES WERE THE INAUGURAL INDUCTEES ONTO THE MILTON WALL OF FAME

SIX NAMES ARE FOREVER ETCHED IN STONE at Bell Memorial Park, as the inaugural inductees to the Milton Wall of Fame at Bell Memorial Park, presented this past November 2019. All are names of individuals from Milton, or they were involved in athletics in Milton schools, or in Milton recreation programs. All of them excelled to a high level in their particular sport. The purpose of the Wall of Fame is to recognize and honor the achievement and success of deserving athletes, coaches, and contributors. There were 15 individuals nominated in 2019. Each nominee must be from Milton or have participated in or coached a sport in Milton. As an athlete, they must have achieved success in their respective sport beyond high school. And, each must be a good citizen and demonstrate good character, integrity and be a good representative of their program and the City of Milton.

"We're thrilled to have such a successful and well-rounded group as the inaugural inductees to our Wall of Fame," said Parks & Rec Director, Jim Cregge. "The six being inducted were not only standouts on the field, but are also each a great representative of the City of Milton." The City is accepting nominees for the Class of 2020 up to March 31, 2020. The 6 inaugural inductees: Collin McHugh: Baseball; Major

League Baseball pitcher and 2017 World Series Champion with the Houston Astros. Tim Godby: Coach; 13-Time GHSA State High School Girls Lacrosse Championship coach at Milton High School. Evan Nolte: Basketball; 2014 ACC Champion with the University of Virginia.

Ryan Gridley: Baseball; Missis-

sippi State University, currently in the Oakland Athletics minor league farm system. Michael Nugent: Lacrosse; standout goalie at Mercer College, played pro w/the Denver Outlaws and Boston Cannons. Lydia Witkowski: Softball; played at Hofstra Univ., and Georgia Southern University.

“THE ONCOMING FIST EMOJI is a way to greet a friend instead of saying ‘hello’ or ‘goodbye’; to congratulate someone on a job well done; to celebrate a brand that is eco-friendly; or to acknowledge a fantastic hand-crafted hoagie, salad, soup or dessert,” reads a mural inside Knuckies, a new gourmet hoagie shop at Crabapple Market which opened on August 13, 2019. Since then, the dedicated team continues to serve up more than sandwiches. With their unique concept, passion for people and genuine desire to make a difference in the community, Knuckies exemplifies a true, homegrown brand – the key to our hearts (and appetites) here in Milton.

| photos by lauren kress, www.laurenlizphoto.com

Knuckies sources and uses certified eco-friendly disposable products; they support local schools with spirit days and gift cards for teacher-of-the-month and athlete-of-the-game awards and give a 25-percent discount to first responders as a “thank you” for serving our community. “Our mission is relationship-building,” says Todd Broaderick, founder of Georgia Franchise Group (GFG) and the Knuckies brand. “We strive to make every guest feel valued when they walk into our store.” The Knuckies experience offers the best of both worlds in that it feels casual and approachable, meanwhile the curated menu is enough to make “gourmet” read like an understatement.

Georgia Franchise Group – www.georgiafranchisegroup.com Georgia Franchise Group (GFG), founded by Todd Broaderick, has built strong brands and created value in the local fast-casual industry since 2015. GFG is a passionate team of people who are looking to make a difference in the world, using fast casual restaurants as the means. At GFG, they don't just want to make a profit, they want to make a difference. They are passionate about living lives of integrity and humility that positively enhance those around them inside and outside of their stores. After successfully acquiring two brands (Purpose Snackery and Crazy Dough’s Artisan Slice Bar) in 2018, Todd felt called to turn his own idea (Knuckies) into reality.

Todd Broaderick, founder of Georgia Franchise Group and the mastermind behind "Knuckies"

With the help of H&F Bread Co. in Atlanta, GFG remixed Crazy Dough’s international-award-winning pizza crust recipe to create Knuckies’ famous hoagie roll. Down to the dough, each roll represents the sheer ingenuity of the brand itself. Knuckies’ premium deli meats, imported cheeses and fresh toppings have been thoughtfully matched to create unique combinations sure to satisfy every palate. Their most popular menu items so far should come as no surprise; you can’t go wrong with a classic! Number 35, a.k.a. “The Knuckie,” is loaded with Certified Angus Beef® Pastrami, melted swiss and coleslaw, and topped with house-made garlic-dill pickle aioli. Another fan favorite is Number 10, the “Original Italian,” stacked high with Tavern ham, Volpi salami, pepperoni, capicola, provolone, onion, cherry pepper relish, lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise, oil and vinegar. It’s hard not to daydream about the mouthwatering symphony of flavors – on a pizza-crust-inspired hoagie roll, no less! continued on next page...

WHO IS THE LOCAL ARTIST, WHOSE WORK WE SEE AT CITY HALL?

MHS SPRING MUSICAL

While dropping off magazines at City Hall, we wondered who the local artist was commissioned for the incredible pieces within this young administrative building - it appeared to us a well-coordinated effort to incorporate a local artist, with the same architectural sensibilities as the structure. Local expressionist, visual artist, Isabelle Gautier, is the creative spirit behind this 2017 project. The project was about creating a balance visual flow throughout the whole building. Taking in consideration sizes, colors and style of each painting throughout the rooms and hallways was key. The hallway art had to break the monotony of numerous office doors, the painting in the innovative room had to provoke reflection, and the commission work in the main entrance had to reflect Milton's spirit. www.isabellegautiersart.com

CHICAGO

In roaring twenties Chicago, chorus girl Roxie Hart murders a faithless lover and convinces her hapless husband, Amos, to take the rap... until he finds out he's been duped and turns on Roxie. Convicted and sent to death row, Roxie and another "Merry Murderess," Velma Kelly, vie for the spotlight and the headlines, ultimately joining forces in search of the "American Dream": fame, fortune, and acquittal. IN MEMORY OF

MARK LAW

Honoring the memory of former City Arborist Mark Law, who passed away last spring, a statue of a horse will be placed in the roundabout at Charlotte Drive and Mayfield Road near the Milton Library. The statue was first proposed by Mark Law. Following his death earlier this year, his family requested donations to fund the project. Since the call to action, 104 donors have raised over $11,000. The statue will feature a 6-foot-tall, 8.5-footlong horse in the center of the roundabout and costs $4,900, with $2,000 for installation, funded by donations through the nonprofit Milton Arts Council. The statue will be the second dedication to Law in Milton. Earlier this year, the city dedicated an arboretum at Bell Memorial Park in his honor. Mark dreamed of opening an arboretum in Milton, and on Georgia Arbor Day, Feb. 15, 2019, as he watched via FaceTime from his hospital bed.

MAYOR'S RUN / Jog For A Cause 5K

IN MEMORY OF

ROBERT WYATT MOORE THE CYCLING COMMUNITY lost an amazing advocate and friend last April 26th. In addition to being a Bike Roswell board member, Robert Wyatt Moore was on the board of Olde Blind Dog Cycling Club, and was an active volunteer for many local cycling groups. Robert was the headmaster of Mill Springs Academy and served in countless ways to support and nurture the education of his Mill Springs students. As a cyclist and group ride leader Robert embodied the selfless spirit of a "domestique", the French word that translates as "servant". Robert's life of service left a legacy

The City of Milton is proud to partner with North Point Pediatrics to host the Annual Mayor's Run and Jog For A Cause on February 29. The race benefits the families of local pediatric cancer patients. Grab some friends or your running group and join this fun, fast Peachtree qualifier. The Milton Mayor’s Run and Jog for a Cause will be held at Freedom Park (located at 13200 Deerfield Parkway next to Webb Road). Register online. Learn more at www.jogforacause5k. com or contact Courtney Spriggs, Community Outreach Manager at courtney.spriggs@cityofmiltonga.us which is living on in the many lives he touched! We have been given the opportunity to honor Robert by placing a life-size, memorial sculpture on The Green at Crabapple Market. Robert's brother, Carl, is the artist working on this project. Carl has created a model, (see image) but we need to raise funds to cover the estimated $20,000 cost of this project. To kickstart the funding, an extraordinary pledge of $10,000 has been provided by a donor. Bike Roswell is privileged to lead the campaign to raise the remaining $10,000, of which there is $6,900 more to go.

Vickery's crown jewel is the most well-hidden gem on the market.

A

BY DANIELLE BARTLING

A hop, skip and a jump from Milton’s border is Vickery Village, an award-winning mixed-use community known for its elegant charm and signature “live, work, play” lifestyle. Vickery offers close proximity to a variety of restaurants and businesses such as Cherry Street Brewing, The Chill Hill and Branchwater, whose chef-owner Todd Hogan you might recognize as the owner of Duke’s Bar and Grill in Crabapple. With all of this to offer and more, Vickery’s most striking feature remains the picturesque residential district.

Tree-lined streets studded with fairytale homes, each different from the last, wind through a landscape enriched by natural beauty. The neighborhood boasts approximately 75 acres of parks and greenspace which serve as a foundation for community. Vickery founders Pam Sessions and Don Donnelly planted roots in the center and, from there, developed the radius outward. With the help of renowned architect Bobby McAlpine, Pam and Don completely renovated the homestead in the early 2000s.

Only the chimney is visible through tree cover at 5827 Long Park, highly sought-after for its seclusion and stunning proximity to the village and all amenities.

Believe it or not, this timeless property is up for sale! Situated on the largest, most coveted lot in Vickery, nestled among tall trees and lush landscaping, the scenic compound is an "anomaly within an anomaly," offering the utmost privacy and seclusion without sacrificing a sense of community. It is conveniently located within walking distance to the village shops and restaurants, two gyms and all amenities including two parks, two lakes, a pool, tennis and basketball courts and walking paths. Equal in both form and function, the Long Park estate is purposefully designed to transition effortlessly from room to room, season to season. In warm-weather temperatures, the tranquil outdoor oasis comes to life in full bloom. Artisan stonework leads from the main edifice to a quiet parterre garden on the southwest end of the property, and a fully screened-in porch on the north end. The rear-facing side of the house overlooks a jumbo saltwater pool, detached pool house, golf putting green and elevated gazebo, setting the scene for sunlit gatherings and serene morning swims in solitude.

In total there are five bedrooms, including an over In

In total there are five bedrooms, including an oversized master on the main floor, four bathrooms, two half-baths, a pool bathroom and a four-car garage. Of all the rooms in this house, one stands out among the rest. Famous for its sheer spectacle, the “Pecky Cypress Room is adorned with authentic wall-to-wall paneling and a tongue-and-groove ceiling. This illustrious space cannot be overstated, especially during the winter months when decorated with string lights and verdant garlands. Another interesting feature is a hidden bar to the left of the mantel, tucked inconspicuously behind panels of pecky cypress. Everything from floor to ceiling, outdoors and in-between has been thoughtfully curated and masterfully executed. Hand-selected hardware, fixtures, tile, accent colors and patterns add intrigue to every surface within the broader context of the home. The cozy keeping room meets a state-of-the-art kitchen decked with two sub-zero refrigerators, two Bosch dishwashers and a Thermador Professional stove. This home is just as equipped to entertain as it is for comfortable, everyday living.

The current homeowners, Jennifer and Mike Schoenberger, previously lived two doors down, where they first fell in love with Vickery. In 2014, they jumped on the opportunity to live at its original homestead. Jennifer (left) is an interior designer by trade and a homemaker at heart. She and her business partner, Lindsey Hene (bottom right), co-own the esteemed Elle + Vreeland Design House based in Milton. Needless to say, Jennifer has more than maintained this home; she has brought to life her ever-evolving vision for its spacious, customizable layout and used it as a canvas for her craft. Vickery has served the Schoenbergers well over the years; now they invite another loving family to call it home. Robyn Sprague (top right) is a highly-trusted real estate agent with more than 20 years of experience, industry knowledge and local expertise – not to mention a hard-earned bachelor’s degree in Real Estate. Her devotion to this property was evident from our first phone call and confirmed upon our meeting. Robyn's genuine enthusiasm and outspoken passion for the estate made it profoundly clear just how much 5827 Long Park means to her. As she walked me through, she elaborated on every feature, sparing no detail. Robyn sells homes across North Atlanta and is often referred by clients to their families and friends. She cares deeply about her work and often goes beyond the call of duty, putting in extra hours unseen, out of dedication to her clients and passion for her work.

Let’s do brunch, locally. In 2017, the City of Milton residents voted, “Yes” to a bill allowing local restaurants to sell alcohol on Sundays at early as 11 a.m., rather than ask customers to wait until 12:30 p.m.

A Southern Sunday

tradition

Going out for Sunday brunch is a long-standing Southern tradition, but where did the concept originate? In Hunter’s Weekly, in 1895, British author Guy Beringer combined the words “breakfast” and “lunch” to create “brunch” and made a case that post-church Sunday meals should be made of lighter fare served late in the morning rather than long, multi-course meals with heavy meats and cheeses. He added, “Brunch is cheerful, sociable and inciting. It is talk-compelling. It puts you in a good temper, it makes you satisfied with yourself and your fellow beings, it sweeps away the worries and cobwebs of the week.”

Where should we go this Sunday for brunch?

RIDE AND SUPPORT THE OLDE BLIND DOG CYCLING CLUB at its now annual St. Paddy O'Pedal Ride to conquer childhood cancer on Sunday, March 22, 2020. The funds raised will benefit the Kiersten Dickson Memorial Center Research Endowment supporting pediatric cancer research at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and Aflac Cancer Center. The slogan for the now annual event is, ‘Riding because they no longer can.’ March 22, at the Olde Blind Dog Irish Pub in Crabapple - Family Fun Run at 10 a.m., 25 Mile - 10 a.m., 45 Mile - 10 a.m., and Metric - 9 a.m.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT? In 2013, when she was a sophomore at Georgia State University, doctors diagnosed 19-year old Kiersten Dickson of Woodstock, with stage four small cell lung cancer, an aggressive form of the disease with a low survival rate. Although she held out hope for successful treatment, Kiersten knew that she didn’t have much time left. Her parents and sister were devastated with her, but so proud of the way Kiersten chose to live her last months. On July 22, 2015, three days before her 21st birthday, Kiersten died. Her family continues her work to find a cure for cancer and make life a little easier for those undergoing treatment. Her sister, Erin Dickson, wants to become an oncology nurse, having said, “It was just kind of a calling. I realized how much I still didn’t know about cancer and so I

2020 Census: Complete Count Committee Here's how you can help Milton reach 100 percent! Once every decade, the federal government conducts a census of the entire population to count everyone in the United States and record basic information about them, which is used to draw congressional districts, decide how many representatives each state has in the House of Representatives, and how much federal money each municipality receives (each person counts for ~ $1,600/year!) The City of Milton is looking for volunteers to help form a Complete Count Committee (CCC), which allows its members to engage with the community to get a 100 percent participation rate in Milton! To learn more and help out, be sure to attend the meeting Thursday, January 23 at 6 p.m., at City Hall. cody.hendrix@cityofmiltonga.us 29
