JOG FOR A CAUSE MAYOR’S RUN FEBRUARY 27th • Freedom Park

THE CITY OF MILTON is proud to bring the 13th annual Jog for

a Cause to the community as part of the 7th annual Milton Mayor’s Run. Applications and sponsorship packets for the 2016 Milton Mayor’s Run presents Jog for a Cause, to be held at 7:30 a.m. Feb. 27 at Freedom Park, are now available at cityofmiltonga.us and on active.com. “We are excited to partner and host Jog for a Cause again this year,” said Milton Mayor Joe Lockwood. “I can’t wait to see everyone out there with us on Deerfield Parkway, staying fit, having fun and raising money for a great cause.” “As a founding member of the Milton Mayor’s Run and a Milton resident, I am thrilled we could partner again with the city to host Jog for a Cause,” said Dr. Greg Cabrera of North Point Pediatrics. “We have raised over $250,000 in thirteen years to fight childhood cancer and can’t wait to get to work and raise more money in 2016.”

The partnership with Jog for a Cause is a wonderful opportunity for north Fulton residents to not only be active with our Mayor, but benefit our community and those that live here. The race will follow the same route as in years past, and like last year, begin and end at Milton’s Freedom Park located at the corner of Deerfield Parkway and Webb Road (click here for directions), said Courtney Spriggs, Milton’s public outreach coordinator. It includes a 5K race and tot trot. The race will be a Peachtree qualifier. Cost for participation is $25 if received before Feb. 14 and $30 after. That fee includes a quality, moisture-wicking T-shirt with the race logo and plenty of food and fluids after the race. The 5K race will circle Deerfield Parkway, meaning it will be flat and fast. Awards will go to the 5K Male and Female Open and Masters and to the top 3 finishers in the various age groups. The race also serves as a Peachtree qualifier. THERE WERE WHISPERS in the halls of Cambridge High School, then shock, then excitement. No one could believe the news. “It is awesome. We are so lucky to have a veterinary science program. No one believed it, when we heard the news, no one believed it would actually come true,” says Cambridge High School Sophomore, Grace Johnson. Cambridge High School is the first school in the country to get a building dedicated to the studies of animal science. Called “The Cave,” the Cambridge Agriscience and Veterinary Education building opened it’s doors this semester for students to try out the new classes. The 4,800 square foot classroom and lab also includes a 2,160 square foot barn. “Students bring their goats in the barn, it’s pretty cool,” says Johnson. The building accommodates everything from

cats, dogs and guinea pigs to the neighboring goats and horses. For most of her life, Johnson wanted wanted to be a vet. Now the officer of FSA is convinced she wants to do something with animals. “It’s the coolest classes the school offers,” says Johnson. “We couldn’t name half of the things in the building, it’s actual veterinary equipment.” Students can take classes in Agriscience, Animal Science and Vet Science labs to give them a taste of what a career as a vet would be like. The building is the first of its kind in the county. For the Fulton school system, this one of a kind program gives new opportunities for students and if successful, more of these programs could sprout up across Georgia and the country. And for Grace Johnson, it’s a chance to live out her childhood dream in high school before she has to commit to eight years of higher education to be an official doctor of veterinary science. LL

TAKE A STEP BACK IN TIME. It’s 1949, post-war America

and a new series of trucks is taking the nation by storm. The 1949 Chevy Pick-up truck. Fast forward more than six decades later and you still take a ride in a 1949 Teal Truck, lovingly brought back to life by the Vojnovic Family. “We found some of the parts online and my husband and son restored it with help. They had a good time together bringing it back to it’s glory days,” says Susan Vojnovic. The fully restored, drivable truck resides at Raisin’s Ranch in Milton where you can rent it for weddings, photo shoots, parties and special events. When Susan and her husband Greg bought the Teal Truck from a man named Smoky just up the road in Cumming, it was far from picture perfect. “When I bought it, it was red, black and white with flames painted on the sides and a mural of Foghorn Leghorn on the hood! We polled our family and friends to get opinions on whether to paint it red, hunter green, or turquoise and the overwhelming response was to go with the turquoise. I’ve always loved that color and it was definitely the right choice,” says Susan. Susan chose a color called Indian Turquoise which is true to the era

and the Teal Truck was on it’s way! Before it was restored, Susan and Greg took the truck out for a test drive with their morning coffee. Their feet went through the floorboard, the brakes went out and they coasted into their neighborhood. “Then we decided to go one step further and restore it to be able to drive it reliably so we could rent it out for weddings, parties and special events,” says Susan. Now it’s ready to truck on over to your next event or photoshoot! When it’s not getting its picture taken, The Teal Truck parks at Raisin’s Ranch. Most weekends, the ranch is booked with parties. With mini horses, pygmy goats, lambs, mini donkeys, rabbits, chickens and ponies, Raisin’s Ranch is happy to host a day on the farm party no child will forget! The Milton farm has been hosting pony parties since 2008 and every summer puts on a variety of animal themed camps for kids. SPRINGTIME IN MILTON: AWAKENING TO COLOR

AS YOUR GARDEN AWAKENS in spring, what a pleasure it is to see trees and shrubs produce colorful flowers. When deciding what plants to add to your property, consider a variety of trees and shrubs to add interest and color at different times of the season.

Deciduous Ann or Jane Magnolias are early bloomers with abundant and large purplish-red flowers with white centers and are one of the first signs of spring. Their lustrous leaves emerge after the flowers appear.

Spring would not be complete without enjoying the simple beauty of flowering Dogwoods. Plant a pink Dogwood near a white one to provide contrast. A red stem or yellow stem dogwood shrub adds vibrant wood color to the winter and spring landscape. A nice companion tree to dogwoods is the Forest Pansy Redbud. The zig zag branches are covered in wine colored flowers followed by heart-shaped shimmering maroon leaves.

The dwarf Weeping Pussy Willow (sometimes called Weeping Sally) is another early season beauty. This dainty tree fits neatly into tight spaces and produces silky soft silvery-white fuzzy catkins resembling miniature rabbit’s feet. After the “rabbit’s feet” emerge, they become covered with small yellow flowers.

An old fashioned favorite is Forsythia, sometimes called Yellow Bells. The Lynwood variety produces abundant bright yellow flowers before the leaves emerge. A Forsythia in full bloom is breathtaking and noticeable from quite a distance. The cut branches make dramatic floral centerpieces with their bright yellow flowers.

If you like flowering cherry trees, and your space allows it, Okame, Yoshino and Kwanzan cherry trees have graceful flowers and always bring a smile to one’s face. As a bonus, their tree trunks develop attractive horizontal markings. Flowering Cherry trees prefer alkaline soil and will benefit from adding a handful of lime to the planting hole at the time of installation.

Enjoying the show of flowering trees and shrubs in your landscape warms the soul and creates a sense of well-being. Stop by your favorite garden center, order a latte, and stroll the grounds while deciding which plants might best enhance your property. Most garden centers have landscape designers on staff who can consult on plant layout at your property and arrange to have your plants installed.

If you like unusual plants, consider adding a Harry Lauder Walking Stick. It was named after a crusty English actor who appeared on stage a bit tipsy and needed the assistance of his contorted cane to stay upright. This unique shrub has twisted and gnarled branches with pendulous yellow catkins that add color to an early spring day. The contorted branches provide

FIRST RESPONDERS SUPPORT THE MILTON FIRST RESPONDERS FOUNDATION

IN A SMALL COMMUNITY, people come together to help take care of their own. In a community like Milton, when firefighters or police officers get hurt on the job, protecting their community, The Milton First Responders Foundation is here to help. In May 2015, the Foundation was founded to help raise money for firefighters and police officers who get hurt on the job. “We want to build a bridge between the community and police officers and firefighters,” says Board Member and Treasurer, Robyn Pinto. “Their jobs are not easy, they put themselves in danger all of the time, we still have incidents in Milton and we want to give back to them and show them we do appreciate all that they do for us.” The Milton First Responders Foundation is headed up by local attorney Claudine Wilkins and runs solely on donations from local businesses, organizations and individuals. Last year they raised more than $14K from a charity golf tournament. MFRF is dedicated to providing critical resources to those who make the city of Milton a safe place to live, work and visit. Public safety cannot rest on the shoulders of law enforcement and firefighters alone. As much as we all need the police and firefighters, they need our support as well.

Specifics are kept confidential when offering assistance to help maintain their privacy and dignity. The Foundation also steps in when the budget falls short. “The departments requested two bikes each so they can patrol festivals and get through crowds quickly and reach people in need of help,” says Pinto. The MFRF is close to reaching it’s goal to purchase the first set of bikes, equipped with lifesaving equipment. Volunteers are also essential to this organization. MFRF has a firetruck pull planned for the spring and a charity golf tournament planned for the fall. Volunteers are key to the success of these events from helping to organize to handing out water, lots of hands are needed. Local resident Brian Dolan gives his time and skills to a cause he is passionate about... supporting our first responders. It runs in the family, as he is the son of retired NYPD Officer Jim Dolan. THE NUMBERS ARE OUT on the effectiveness of last year’s flu vaccine, which is touted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other public health organizations as “the best way to prevent the flu.” According to a February 2015 CDC report, the effectiveness of the flu shot was just 18 percent overall, 15 percent among children ages two to eight, and nine percent for seniors ages 65 and older. The nasal spray flu vaccine showed almost no benefit for children ages two to eight.

The best way to prevent the flu is to maintain a strong immune system through optimal lifestyle and nutrition. Avoid sugar and processed food (sugar immediately decreases immune system function), get seven to nine hours of sleep each night, and optimize your vitamin D levels. Vitamin D is important for proper immune function and is also an effective antimicrobial. Studies show that children who take just 1,200 IUs of vitamin D3 daily are 42 percent less likely to get the flu. Adults can supplement with 5,000 to 8,000 IUs daily during the winter months.

Last year’s flu season was said to be one of the worst in years, and by January 2015, the CDC had warned that the flu vaccine was a poor match to the influenza A strain, which caused most cases of the flu, because it had mutated early in the season. Yet, health officials still urged everyone to get a flu shot, saying it would make symptoms less severe, without providing evidence to support this claim. In addition to questions regarding the flu vaccine’s effectiveness are concerns about its safety. Side effects range from numbness and tingling of the skin, chest pain, shortness of breath, laryngitis and convulsions, to spinal cord inflammation (myelitis), optic nerve inflammation (optic neuritis), facial palsy and paralysis. Though recommended for pregnant women, the flu vaccine is categorized by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a Pregnancy Category B or C Biological. This means adequate testing

Other ways to support optimal immune health include proper hydration, regular exercise, stress-reduction techniques, hand washing and daily probiotic supplementation, as 80 percent of the immune system resides in the gut (see Importance of the Microbiome, Milton Magazine, July). Take homeopathic preparations and herbs for respiratory health, including sambucus, myrrh and echinacea. Also, supplement with oil of oregano, garlic, olive leaf and monolaurin, which are immune-system builders that provide potent antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial support, without the side effects associated with pharmaceutical antibiotics and vaccinations. The people of Milton bring the new library building to life… families bring their children there to discover the wonder of books and the fun of having a library card. Collaborative groups work in the private meeting or study rooms to create projects or begin building a dream. The team from the Fulton County Public Library System work long hours keeping the library and its valuable materials neatly organized. The Friends of the Milton Library {FOML} is a non-profit 501{c}3 organization made up of local residents who have long championed the idea of building a library for Milton. Now, our FOML meet and coordinate efforts to support the new library and its many programs through fundraising and other volunteer efforts. The opening of our fabulous new library is just the beginning. Consider joining the FOML. There are many ways to get involved. Check out their website {miltonlibraryfriends.org} for more information, attend one of their events, or drop by and say “hello” at the FOML Barn, located onsite just outside the new library. Milton Community Easter Egg Hunts

GRAB YOUR EASTER BASKETS AND BRIGHT-EYED children and check out one of the local Easter Egg Hunts happening around Milton this year. The City of Milton’s Community Easter Egg Hunt is a family event, which will include egg hunts for all ages beginning at 10 a.m. Games, face painting, music and a visit from the Easter Bunny will be a part of the festivities ending at noon. Egg Hunt Schedule: 10:30 a.m.- Ages 0-3; 11:00 a.m.- Ages 4-6 11:30 a.m.- Ages 7-9; Noon- Ages 10-12 3,000 plastic eggs filled with treats will be hidden throughout the park. Inflatables and other games will provide exhausting entertainment. Milton Police and Fire trucks will display their brightly colored vehicles and equipment. And shhhhhhh….Don’t tell the kids, but the Easter Bunny will also make an appearance. “We’re excited to bring a good, old fashioned egg hunt to Milton,” said Courtney Spriggs, community outreach coordinator for the City of Milton. “We couldn’t have found better partners in our faith-based, business and recreation communities to help bring
