Welcome Home to the City of Milton
Whether you’ve moved from out of state or just across town, we’re glad to have you and hope that you’ll take part in everything this young city has built over the past six years. Since you might be new to the area, how about some history? You might not know that Milton is one of the youngest cities in north Fulton County. The push for Milton began in 2005 when State Rep. Jan Jones introduced the bill to create the city from what was previously unincorporated Fulton County. It passed both the state House and Senate in March 2006. On July 18, 2006, 85 percent of voters approved the City of Milton referendum. The city incorporated on Dec. 1, 2006 and has been going strong ever since. It joined Sandy Springs (2005) and Johns Creek (also in 2006) in the push for cityhood from unincorporated Fulton County. Named after Revolutionary War Hero John Milton, the City of Milton is a part of Fulton County with municipal and County Commission representation. The city’s first general 8
election for mayor and city council was held on Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2006. There have since been three more. To review the full city charter (which establishes the city’s powers and purpose), visit the city’s web site, www.cityofmiltonga.us.
Population and Size Milton has a population of 33,836 (based on U.S. Census numbers from 2010 and housing data up to 2012) and covers 23,000 acres. It is bordered by Cherokee County to the north and west; Forsyth County to the east; Roswell city limits to the southwest (a little west of Arnold Mill Road); Alpharetta city limits to the south (roughly, Mayfield Road to Cogburn Road to Windward Parkway). Your government: Milton employs more than 130 people. The bulk of staffing is in public safety: 35 police and 55 fire cityofmiltonga.us

Am I in Alpharetta, Roswell or Milton?
You might see on a number of maps and databases that Milton addresses are listed as Alpharetta or Roswell, two cities with which Milton shares a border. Additionally, many real estate agencies also use Alpharetta or Roswell in listings regardless of actual location because of their attractiveness when it comes to schools, public safety and amenities – areas in which Milton also excels. So why is this? For years what is now Milton was considered unincorporated Alpharetta or Roswell (meaning residents paid all taxes to Fulton County, but had an Alpharetta or Roswell address and no local representation in either government). This has led to some interesting situations, like the fact that Alpharetta’s North Park and Crabapple Government Center are actually fully within Milton’s borders (due to the belief during their construction and purchase that one day Alpharetta would annex what is now Milton). Even more confusing, what was once Milton High School – now Milton Center – is in Alpharetta, as is Old Milton Parkway. The “new” Milton High School, fittingly enough, is in Milton on Birmingham Highway. It is because of this shared history that you’ll often hear Milton residents say they are from Alpharetta or Roswell. It will simply take time to get everyone on the same page. 12

Luckily, this situation is getting better every day. Early in the city’s life the United States Post Office began recognizing Milton addresses in the 30004 zip code. Slowly Internet databases began picking up on this change, and soon folks around these parts will, too. And one more thing you’ve surely noticed. The borders of Alpharetta, Roswell and Milton can seem arbitrary, due in large part to annexation choices among residents in 2006 and 2007. For example, in Crabapple – a decades-old crossroads and site for Milton’s future City Hall – you can go from Milton, to Alpharetta, to Roswell on the same road. On the side of the city that borders Forsyth County, whether you are in Milton or Forsyth County literally depends on which side of the road you happen to be.
What is Milton County? As you meet your neighbors, you might also hear about efforts for a Milton County, of which the City of Milton would be a part. This proposed new county (essentially everything north of Sandy Springs in Fulton County) has a lot of obstacles to overcome in the state legislature. No one knows if it will happen, let alone when. Regardless, with the hectic lives of residents these days, you’ll probably hear someone say they live in Milton County. They do not. If you live in Milton, you live in Fulton County and receive Fulton County services in return for your tax money, including city and county elections, schools and animal control. cityofmiltonga.us

MILTON BUSINESS ALLIANCE hosts “State of the City” By Joellyn Sargent The Milton Business Alliance hosted its first annual “State of the City” address at Milton City Hall on Jan. 15. Mayor Joe Lockwood provided an update on items of importance to residents and the business community. Mayor Lockwood addressed construction projects like the roundabout at Birmingham Highway and Providence Road (a state DOT project), the Milton Library (a Fulton County Project) and the newly constructed Crabapple Pavilion. While the mention of Milton brings to mind images of idyllic horse pastures and elegant homes, the city is also home to a growing business community. “We want to have some nice, thriving commercial areas with local businesses,” Lockwood explained. The city doesn’t plan to pursue major corporate development, preferring to strike a balance between its residential quality of life and the businesses community. “We’re not going to compete for the big projects, we just want to be a nice place to stay,” said Lockwood. The Milton Business Alliance (MBA) anchors Milton’s business community. The organization’s members are local business leaders who either own or operate a business in the City of Milton or live here. Their companies are diverse, ranging from local restaurants, banks, consultants, attorneys and CPAs to PR firms, travel and tourism services and payroll providers. 14
Although the city doesn’t boast large office towers, some seemingly small and even home-based businesses located here serve a much broader client base. Member companies work throughout the region and across the globe. Whatever their industry, the MBA’s 100-plus members work together to promote and maintain a positive environment in which both new and existing Milton businesses can thrive. Members gather monthly to learn about business trends, local government issues and civic initiatives while supporting the community through civic programs like scholarships, charitable donations and the Adopt-A-Road program. Recent speakers at include experts on topics like sales, finance and marketing. The organization also helps members feel the pulse of local government, featuring programs with Milton City Manager Chris Lagerbloom, Georgia State Senator Brandon Beech, State Representative Jan Jones and US Congressional Representative Tom Price. “The scope of our programming is impressive,” said MBA Chairman Andy Jordan. He continued, “with an annual membership fee of just $50 compared to other local groups that cost $150 or more to join, I think we’re the best value around for local business leaders.” For more information about the MBA, visit www.MiltonBusinessAlliance.com. cityofmiltonga.us

The WRIGHT Stuff
By Lisa Lossie
It’s Sunday afternoon at Fire Station
41 in Milton. Beef stew is simmering on the stove and fresh baked corn bread fills the air. A twenty-nine year veteran and a thirty plus year veteran are swapping stories of their days as firefighters. Flames run deep in their blood and their blood runs deep in Milton. They are father and son and together Scott and Jerry Wright have more than 50 years of experience between them as firefighters. “I was a baby when my Dad started as a fireman,” says Milton Firefighter, Captain Scott Wright. “I grew up at the fire station playing on the fire trucks, spending the night there as I got older,” says the Milton High School graduate. “I didn’t want him to be a fireman,” says retired firefighter Jerry Wright, Scott’s father. “I thought it was too dangerous. I wanted him to do something else.” Danger bonded the Wrights and seemed to call Scott at an early age. He started riding motorcycles around the age of five, building ramps out of wood scraps and concrete blocks to see how far he could jump. One year he broke 11 bones with a right arm and left leg in casts at the same time. “He just couldn’t turn down a dare,” says the senior Wright, also a graduate of Milton High School. Now the married father of three grown sons is telling his Dad to be careful and slow it down. Retired since 1992, Wright senior is still a thrill seeker and loves riding his motorcycle on Georgia mountain roads. “Most of us firefighters are Type A personalities, outgoing, thrill seekers and you gotta like danger,” says Scott Wright. During his 29 years on the job, Scott Wright has fought plen-

ty of fires, delivered a baby and seen many things he would rather not talk about. “If you let it bother you, the bad things will make you crazy. Everyone has their own way of coping,” says Scott Wright. Just like the equipment has changed over the years, the job has evolved as well. “When I tried out to be a firefighter, 28 guys tried out and only 8 made it,” says Jerry Wright. “It was hard training. You had to repel off a 7 story building. They wanted to see how long you could stay in and how close you could get to the fire.” The new generation of firefighters are training hard as well. On top of being physically fit, most firefighters at station 41 have their EMS degree or EMT training. With three fire stations serving the growing community of Milton and a 4th shared with Alpharetta, the crew works 24 hours and 48 hours off. “I don’t mind coming to work, the guys are my family,” says Scott Wright. With 24 hours on and 48 hours off firefighters spend a third of the year and for veterans, sometimes a third of their life at the fire station. “It’s the excitement of calls. Not many people can say they help people on a daily basis,” says Scott Wright. It brings a smile to these firefighters when someone they have saved walks into the fire station, happy and thankful to be alive. While they are community heroes, they don’t think of themselves that way. “When someone says thank you, you almost don’t feel like you deserve it,” says Jerry Wright. “It’s my job, I’m just doing my job. You don’t have to thank me.” 17

This spring, one of Milton’s most popular recreational baseball parks has canceled it’s Spring season due to reconstruction of the park.
“It’s a resource readily available for young players, and a place where ex-pros have found their niche, coaching and developing young talent,” says former Major League Baseball Pitcher, Joey Hamilton.
The $9.4 million dollar expansion of Bell Memorial Park will more than double it’s size to a nearly 30 acre multi-use facility. In addition to baseball, the park will host lacrosse, soccer and football as well. But with Hopewell Youth Baseball closed until Fall 2015, baseball players are scrambling to find new parks to play recreational ball. Here’s where bats are cracking this spring: Alpharetta Youth Baseball Roswell Youth Baseball Sharon Springs Athletic Association Ocee Park “We registered our youngest son for 7U with the Alpharetta Youth Baseball Association,” says Scott Paulus, a father of three sons who has been coaching for 8 years. “We chose AYBA because we know many families there and the facil18
With practice starting this month, some players are already swinging for the fences at Auterson Baseball in Milton.
Hamilton started playing ball when he was seven and went on to pitch in the big leagues for nine season. Now like other ex-pros at Auterson, he enjoys coaching kids from little league to travel teams. “There’s natural talent and there’s hard work,” says Hamilton. Working with children at home at a young age can go along way.” If your son or daughter is stepping up to the plate for the first time, pros and coaches agree the best advice, have fun! “Encouraging young athletes is the most important role a parent can play. It is the coaches job to coach and the parents job to support their athlete. There are too many parents that continue to yell and instruct their child from the bleachers,” says Paulus. limits of Milton? If you are unsure if your property is within the city limits, call 678-242-2500 and ask for the tax department. A representative will search the city’s database for the tax ID number. There are also many maps detailing Milton boundaries available in the “Maps” section of the city’s Web site. If my property is in Milton, do I still pay property taxes to Fulton County? Yes, all property owners in Milton also pay property taxes to Fulton County (includes taxes to Fulton County School System and State of Georgia). There are also forms you may use online at the city’s Web site. Does the city offer garbage collection services? No. A number of private vendors registered with the city provide garbage collection. A list may be found at the city’s web site. Can I burn yard waste? The Georgia Burn Ban runs from May 1 through Sept. 30. No outdoor burning is permitted during this time. From Oct. 1 through April 30, outdoor burning of small piles of residential debris may be allowed depending on the fire danger rating for the day. That rating is dependent on factors such as the wind and humidity levels for the day. You can call the Milton Fire Department at 678-242-2570 during regular business hours to check if safe burning is permitted on any day outside of the Burn Ban. Can I water whenever I want? The Georgia Water Stewardship Act went into effect statewide on June 2, 2010. It allows daily outdoor watering for purposes of planting, growing, managing, or maintaining ground cover, trees, shrubs, or other plants only between the hours of 4 p.m. and 10 a.m. Outdoor water use for any purposes other than watering of plants, such as power washing or washing cars, is still restricted to the current odd/even watering schedule. Odd-numbered addresses can water on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Even-numbered and unnumbered addresses are allowed to wa-ter on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. How do I hook up my utilities? Water and sewer service is handled by Fulton County, unless you have a septic tank (generally in use for lots one acre and over), in which case you will simply need water and should schedule septic maintenance on your own.

It’s Consignment Sale Season! By Lisa Lossie
It’s like Christmas,
The 4th of July and Halloween all wrapped into one and the festivities are about to start! Spring Consignment Sale Season is here! Veterans, you know what I’m talking about. New Moms, get ready for one of the best kept secrets in Mommy-land. Those best dressed tots, you see them walking around every day. What you don’t know is their Mommy’s secret. Those adorable little boys in three piece suits and oh so pricey designer label shirts you can barely afford for your hubby. Little girls running around in cute little smocked numbers to match every holiday and a shoe closet to put your own to shame. Their Mommy isn’t always spending big bucks, she’s spending smart at consignment sales. “Years ago many moms wouldn’t sell or shop at consignment sales because of the “garage sale” stigma. Over the years moms have come to find favorite consignment sales where they can easily sell outgrown items and basically replace their children’s wardrobe without spending a penny,” says Erin Freeman, owner of Green With Envy Kids Upscale Consignment Sale. Freeman started her sale in 2006 and watched it grow over the years. Before you go to any sale, there are some things you need to know to make your dollar stretch farther: EARLY EMILY get there EARLY! Get out of bed, throw on your yoga pants and lace up your running shoes, the early riser gets the best stuff! Get there 5 minutes late and Early Emily has already snagged the goods.
big laundry basket with a rope so you can pull it around, or one of the kids’ big toy bins on wheels! NINA KNOWS it’s best to leave babies and small children at home. If you don’t have Grandma or Aunt Shirley to watch them - swap off with a friend in the parking lot. CARRIE CASH knows most sales only accept cash - so bring some Benjamins! LINDSEY LIST makes a list of her kids’ sizes, most needed items and even a traces their foot to ensure shoes will fit. VALERIE THE VOLUNTEER knows perhaps, the best kept secrets of all! Consignment sales need help, volunteers make these sales sing and for your time, most sales are willing to reward you with a chance to shop their pre-sale! You get to shop before the public shops and get your pick of the floor! CHRISTIE CONSIGNOR turns her children’s outgrow items into cold, hard cash. She prices to sell and pockets the profits! Milton Moms dish on their favorite sales: • North Fulton Moms of Multiples 1/31 • Kidsignments 2/10-2/14 • Green with Envy Kids Upscale Consignment Sale plus Matilda Jane Trunk Show & Samples 2/26-2/28 • Creekside United Methodist Church Mops 2/27/28 • Roswell United Methodist Church 3/7-3/8 • Midway United Methodist Church 3/19-3/24

FEBRUARY is PET DENTAL MONTH By Dr. Jennifer Ferrell
Got dog breath?
Many dog and cat owners assume that bad breath is normal. However, it is often a sign of dental infection that can be treated and prevented. Sometimes it is due to foreign material stuck in your pet’s mouth, or can be a sign of oral cancer, diabetes, lung, stomach or kidney problems. The best way to get rid of bad breath and keep your pet healthy is to have your veterinarian do a full oral exam, identify, and then treat any underlying causes. February is National Pet Dental Health Month, and is a perfect time to get your dogs and cats a dental check-up. Visible Symptoms of dental disease: Bad breath, brown teeth, blood on chew toys, red and swollen gums, rubbing the face, a swelling on the cheek, or reluctance to eat hard foods are all symptoms that you may notice with dental disease. Hidden dangers of chronic dental disease: Most importantly...PAIN. Inflamed gums and infections in teeth hurt, whether it is obvious or not. If the same
26
infection was on the skin and more visible, no one would hesitate to treat it. Because dental disease is hidden, it can be hard to tell when your pet is in pain. You have to “lift the lip” to see the teeth. Try to check your pet’s mouth at least monthly for any signs of tartar, redness, odor, or chipped teeth. Chronic periodontal disease has been shown in studies to be associated with inflammation and degeneration in the liver and kidneys. This long term inflammation can also make other diseases like diabetes harder to manage. Damage to the teeth can be irreversible, and the teeth will need to be extracted or corrected with surgery if the infection has gone too far. Preventing Dental Disease The best way to prevent dental disease is to brush your pet’s teeth every day. Brushing can be enjoyable for your pet, and if started when they are young, it will be easy. The reality is that most people do not brush their pet’s teeth (full disclaimer: I don’t either). There are many products on the market that can help

Formulated diets, safe chews, oral rinses, water additives, treats, paste and brushes are all good options if used daily. It is important to buy products that have been shown to be effective and safe. You can check out the Veterinary Oral Health Council website for a complete list (www.vohc.org). Treating Dental Disease Just like in people, regular brushing and home care isn’t enough. Your veterinarian will examine the mouth and look for any problems. If there are any concerns, general anesthesia is used to do a full mouth examination and to take x-rays. Next she will gently remove tartar that is visible on the teeth. Most importantly, she will probe under the delicate gum line (gingiva) to check for gingivitis or periodontal disease and to scrape away the hidden plaque and infection there. The teeth are then polished and the mouth is rinsed.

Further dental care (extractions, root canals, surgery) may be needed. Modern anesthesia is safe for almost all pets, and without it you cannot properly treat dental disease. Some have attempted “anesthesia-free” dentistry in pets, but it is dangerous for your pet and does not treat the infection and disease under the gum line, even if the teeth “look” cleaner. Take advantage of Dental Health Month and get your pet’s dental check-up soon.

Forever We
is a local non-profit that raises money for childhood cancer.
If you know someone who has a child with cancer, you may feel there is nothing you can possibly do to help them. When Chantel Adams’ best friend’s daughter was diagnosed with cancer, Chantel offered all the usual things to help out: bring meals, clean her house, do laundry---but she wanted to do something more meaningful.
Milton, used $1,000 of her own money to purchase some of the dolls for her friends who are battling cancer. Then she set up a giving page on the FE web site which allowed her supporters and friends to gift dolls in her honor. Even her 5th grade class at Cogburn Woods Elementary in Milton raised money to purchase dolls for kids!
After watching her daughter play with dolls, she noticed she was using the dolls to tell stories. She had the dolls helping each other. Chantel paired up with her friend and business partner Ginny Starr to develop Forever We.
Generosity multiplied, and they were able to give about 75 children with cancer something tangible that shows them, “Not only do we care about you, but we’re with you; and we’re doing something to help find a cure for cancer.”
Forever We is a nonprofit organization which makes dolls and books to address foster care and adoption, family homelessness, and pediatric cancer. The organization donates a portion of the proceeds directly to other organizations that are funding the best research. One of their nonprofit partners is Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research; and one of the hospitals they support is Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
These dolls aren’t just for those children who have cancer. The dolls offer an opportunity for kids to practice compassion and kindness. In the U.S. cancer affects 1 out of every 3 people; and each school day 46 kids are diagnosed with cancer. Children are familiar with the word, “cancer.” These toys empower them and make it okay for them ask questions.
For $40, they will deliver one Forever We package to a child with cancer. The package includes a doll, book, wig, pediatric cancer awareness ribbon, and courage bead. All of these accessories can be purchased separately as well. The first child who ever received a Forever WE doll is now battling a relapse at St. Jude. The Secret Art of the AUCTIONEER By Ryan Sedgwick Sedgwick Art Gallery sedgwickgallery.com
Do your walls look like this?
Come see us!
The first thing you’d notice about
the person shouting numbers at the front of the room is that they sure can talk fast. If you look a little past the fast speaking voice you’d notice that professional auctioneers provide a huge secret value to a non profit auction. They make you more money- who hasn’t seen the classic silent auction at their fundraiser? A smattering of donated items from local business and backers, maybe they stepped it up with a hired consignment company to provide memorabilia or art. While these auctions are a fun and easy way to raise money did you know that live auctions raise 3 times more?! Impartiality- one of the worst parts of a charity auction is the volunteer auctioneer. God bless their hearts. These brave souls stand in front of a crowd and do their best, but if things don’t go well at first they can get visibly disappointed and in the worst cases angry. This all to common and terribly uncomfortable situation can be avoided by bringing in a pro.
Sedgwick Art Gallery
Entertaining- forget being uncomfortable. A talented auctioneer is entertaining. Quickly calling bids, getting your guests into bidding wars, these are traits you need to look for.
11am - 3pm, Monday - Friday
Educational- auctioneers need to be experts in their field. A talented auctioneer can provide new insights to even the most seasoned buyers.

In today’s age of technology, do people still book studio time? Nowadays recording software is quite affordable if you know what you’re looking for or what to pirate (not that I condone pirating). Buy a Mac, a few speakers, some mics and cables and with a little setup you can have your very own DIY studio in your basement. So why pay $50-$150 an hour to book studio time? Seems unnecessary when a couple grand can get you a useable studio setup, right?
Wrong! What most people don’t get is that you’re paying for the expertise of the sound engineer and/or producer. Sure we can fiddle our way into recording tracks but can you record the music in a sound treated atmosphere to avoid extra noise and echo, mix all the tracks in a way that highlights specific parts of your instrument depending on the genre of music you are in, or add the right amount of effects to your vocal tracks with just enough reverb and delay to not sound cheesy or distorted?

new music and help you organize the harmony of all your instruments mixed together. It’s also a great tool for practicing. After you figure out your song, go to a treated studio and have the engineer help you get what you want out of your recording. Trust me, you’ll notice the difference, and so will your fans. I’m sure some of us can, but you’ve probably been working at this for years. Unfortunately, most of us cannot. This is what you’re paying for when you go to a professional recording studio. An atmosphere designed to get the most out of your sound with a guide to help you get what you want out of your music. Go ahead, record a track, now listen to the radio, compare the two, sound the same? Listen to where the vocals are, not too hot or too cold. Listen to how the guitars mix in with the drums and baseline. This is an art, and this is what your hard earned money goes to in a pro studio. Now I’m not saying getting a DIY home setup is a bad thing. Quite the contrary, a home setup will help you learn to understand various techniques used in recording. Club Fitting: A Guide By Chris Wright, Director of Golf Alpharetta Athletic Club
18th Hole Alpharetta Athletic Club
Like any professional, if you want to perform at your best… you need the right tools. Golf is no different! To get the most out of your golf swing, it is essential that you have consistency throughout your entire set of clubs. You do not have to be a great player to be a good candidate for a club fitting session. If you have a repeatable golf swing, a club fitting session is the best way, regardless of your skill level, to ensure that you are using a set of clubs designed specifically for your unique swing. It is important to remember that club fitting isn’t a magic bullet. The goal of golf club fitting is to help reduce the severity of the faults in your golf swing, minimize your shot dispersion and put the golf club in the best possible position at impact to strike the ball solidly and with accuracy. The end result creates more consistency in a player’s golf swing and increased opportunity to shoot lower scores. Because there are so many golf clubs on the market, start the process by trying several different brands and styles of golf clubs. You may want to choose clubs which feel more comfortable and visually appealing to you as an individual. A club that looks appealing at address can inspire confidence over each shot. Don’t become preoccupied with one partic32
ular brand just because your favorite tour player uses them! Club fitting is about finding what works best for you. Once you feel comfortable with your choice of clubs; it’s a good idea to focus on a particular area of your golf game when considering a club fitting session. Perhaps, start with your irons at one fitting session or narrow the focus to a specific club/clubs like your driver, fairway woods or wedges. A fitting session may cost as little as nothing to as much as a few hundred dollars depending on the type of fitting package and amount of time spent fitting the club or clubs. A good club fitting session will look at a number of factors including club length, lie angle, shaft characteristics and grip size. All these things must be considered in addition to the basic mechanics of your swing. Technology also plays a major role in club fitting. Certified club fitters can measure ball speed, flight, spin rates and even launch angles to determine your typical shot patterns. This data is cross-reference with thousands of club/shaft combinations to identify those that will enhance the performance of your swing. Club fitting takes all the guesswork out. The goal of every club fitting session is to improve upon the ability of each individual golfer to help them achieve their cityofmiltonga.us
Where to Play personal goals. Regardless of your skill level, every golfer can benefit from a custom golf club fitting. If you are interested in scheduling a club fitting session or simply enquire, you can now take advantage of the expertise available at the new NIKE Performance Center at Alpharetta Athletic Club. They have the ability to fit all major golf brands, and also offer re-gripping and club adjustment services. The fitting center is open to the public and certified fitting professionals are ready to assist you with any of your club fitting needs.

Runway-Inspired: Fashion-Forward Elements to Dress Up a Room People often ask us
what inspires our designs. And while it ranges from our travels to the latest movie sets to reimagining past styles for today, fashion is always a part of it. This season we saw great runway looks inspired by one of our favorite design eras: the early 1970s, a freedom- and fun-loving time with great creativity. Here’s how it translated into some elegant and unexpected elements for our rooms. 1.) Tibetan wool: Fur and shearling vests have been making appearances in all kinds of weather. We added touches to our rooms on ottomans and chairs. You can see it looking especially fun on the cushions of our spectacular new ‘70s-inspired Bastille birdcage chair. 2.) Metallic accents: Many of our storage pieces feature metallic trim and hardware that we often custom design--we see it as the jewelry of a room. And we love mixing metals by using accessories in stainless steel, bronze, and brass together, in finishes from polished to satin. Prints and wall art that incorporate metallics are another way we like to add shimmer. 3.) Leathers in fun colors: Two new leathers in soft hues that we’ve just added to our line speak to springtime and
38
nature’s influence on us, as well as to fashion: eucalyptus and denim. They look especially fresh paired with sofas and chairs in crisp white slipcovers, which can be done in a washable denim fabric for easier maintenance. 4.) Fashion fabrics: A sofa in classic menswear tweed has always been a look we love—it’s timeless and adds subtle texture and color to a room. This season, chambray shirts influenced us to put a soft blue chambray slipcover on our made-for-relaxing Dr. Pitt sectional. We also found a fabulous faux black patent leather…you can see it on our iconic Major chair with a satin-brass frame. The combination gives the chair a great vintage-inspired look. 5.) Amethyst & crystal accessories: Seeing how stone or crystal necklaces enhance an outfit without overpowering it reminds us how much warmth and design interest natural elements from votive holders to bookends to objets contribute. With accessorizing, for us, less is more, so we try to find the right pieces. Let your personal attraction to a piece be one guide—but also look for pieces with quality—you’ve chosen beautiful well-made furniture, now your accents should reflect that. We often pick accents both pretty and practical—bowls, trays, boxes, candleholders—it’s a great way to keep organized and help prevent an overdone, cluttered look. cityofmiltonga.us

PARKS & RECREATION
City of Milton and City of Alpharetta Establish Regionalized Parks System
Thanks to a partnership with the City of Alpharetta Parks and Recreation Department, on Dec. 1 2012 Milton and Alpharetta established a regionalized parks system for both cities and dissolved all non-resident fees at current and future city facilities. According to the terms of the agreement, the cities will annually negotiate a variable maintenance fee - for 2012, the fee is $325,000. For that price, Milton residents can use all the City of Alpharetta programs and facilities they know and love without incurring non-resident fees, which can add as much as 75 percent to the cost of participating. Alpharetta residents may also use any current and future Milton facilities without incurring extra costs. Milton’s cost in the agreement will decrease incrementally as the city brings forward additional facilities and programs utilized by Alpharetta residents. Following is a list of frequently asked questions regarding registration for parks and recreation programs in Milton and Alpharetta. Please note: Milton’s established registration schedules will not change. I registered for an Alpharetta program online and it charged me fees. Can I get a refund? City of Milton residents who choose to register online for City of Alpharetta recreation programs during open 42
registration will be charged non-resident fees by the online software system. However, these non-resident fees shall be refunded upon request. City of Milton residents must e-mail recreation@alpharetta. ga.us to request refund of non-resident fees paid during online registration. The refund will be issued to the customer’s credit card. Once the refund has been processed, Alpharetta’s Parks and Recreation Department will e-mail a credit voucher to the customer. Can I register using priority registration? Priority registration for Alpharetta programs begin two weeks before open registration. Priority registration is for Milton and Alpharetta residents who participated in the same recreation program the previous year with the city offering the program. Milton residents must register in person during the two week period at Milton’s City Hall or online (for Milton programs) or any Alpharetta Recreation and Parks facility (for Alpharetta programs) during regular business hours (8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday). Visit www.alpharetta.ga.us for registration sites. cityofmiltonga.us
When can non-priority Milton residents register? City of Milton residents who have not participated in a specific Alpharetta program may register one week before open registration. Milton residents may register in person at any Alpharetta Recreation and Parks facility during regular business hours, by fax, by mail, or by e-mailing a completed activity registration form available at www.alpharetta.ga.us to recreation@alpharetta.ga.us. When is open registration? Open registration for Alpharetta programs is held two weeks after the start of priority registration. Registration methods available include online (for applicable programs), in person, by fax, by mail, or by e-mail. Question: What is TMJ and TMD? Answer: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder (TMD) is a condition that occurs as a result of dysfunction of the jaw joint and the muscles that control jaw movement. To temporarily alleviate TMD symptoms sufferers can try conservative home remedies. Question: What are some common symptoms of having TMD? Answer: If you have any of: clicking or popping jaw, pain in your face, migraines or headaches, neck or shoulder pain, obstructive sleep apnea then neuromuscular dentistry can potentially help you. Question: What is neuromuscular dentistry? Answer: When the teeth, facial muscles, and temporomandibular joints are out of alignment, the symptoms of what have been identified as TMJ / TMD arise. A neuromuscular dentist accounts for this alignment and incorporates it into the everyday treatment including crowns and veneers. Question: Do all dentists know about neuromuscular dentistry? Answer: Most dentists have looked at the tooth to tooth relationship and creating simultaneous contact on the back right and back left teeth was the primary goal. This was improved by looking at the alignment of the jaw joints. A neuromuscular dentist moved from primarily being tooth driven to primarily being bone and joint driven. In order to allow the joint to function in a specific 48

relationship, the teeth were reshaped and altered to attempt to help address bite issues. It is more complete to include not just teeth but also bones and muscles in the evaluation of the patient. Question: What does a neuromuscular dentist do and does it cost extra to have a neuromuscular dentist? Answer: What a neuromuscular dentist will do is actually measure and assess the soft tissues like muscles as well as the teeth and the bones. The neuromuscular dentist can literally measure the bite muscles exactly like a heart doctor would measure your heart muscles. This comprehensive and complete picture allows the neuromuscular dentists to see beyond the teeth Question: What extra equipment do you have at Crabapple Dental to do neuromuscular dentistry? Answer: We have a Mytronics K7 to measure the correct location for your jaw and bite and a TENS unit to relax the muscles to find its optimum position; the daily stress and tension in your face needs to be relaxed before we can calculate the optimum position. We commonly use the Myotronics for relieving Sleep Apnea in our patients that want to eliminate/reduce use of a CPAP.

Do You Have Lyme Disease? By Eileen Wrobleski
If you're suffering from chronic fatigue, pain, insomnia, abdominal issues or migrating symptoms that seem cyclical, Lyme disease might be the cause. With more than 300,000 new cases yearly in the U.S., some experts consider Lyme to be one of the most serious epidemics of our time. Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, which is released into the blood through the bite of an infected tick or other insect. Fewer than half of new cases involve the presence of the bull’s-eye rash distinctive to Lyme, and initially the symptoms are flu like: headache, dizziness, fever, fatigue, and achy muscles. As it progresses, Borrelia’s corkscrew shape allows it to burrow into various body tissues, causing widely varying symptoms, depending on which organ it is inhabiting. It typically has one or more co-infections, the most common of which are Babesia, Bartonella, Erhlichia and FL1953. Borrelia may also live in biofilm, germs surrounded by a slimy substance that is difficult to dissipate, which explains why treatment tends to be lengthy and recurrence of symptoms occurs. Lyme disease can progress and linger for more than a decade and produce debilitating symptoms, including extreme fatigue, memory loss, muscle spasms, intermittent paralysis and vague neurological symptoms, like a buzzing feeling in the head or a crawling feeling under the skin. Known as “the great imitator,” Lyme mimics many other disorders, including multiple sclerosis, arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, ALS, ADHD, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, fibromyalgia, lupus and more. 52
by Eileen Wrobleski, ND, CNC, HHP
Despite debilitating symptoms, most Lyme patients have “normal” blood test results, because conventional tests rely on the presence of antibodies as evidence of infection, yet, cells infected with Lyme do not function properly and produce antibodies. This is called "the Lyme paradox," as treatment must be administered first so an immune reaction can be launched and antibodies can be detected. Many of the 100 strains of Borrelia have become antibiotic resistant, so long-term use of pharmaceuticals typically does not resolve Lyme, but disrupts gut flora and exposes the body to other pathogens and accompanying issues, such as candida overgrowth and dysbiosis. A gentler, more effective way to combat Lyme is with alternative treatment protocols, which might include ozone treatments; reducing exposure to microwave and wireless technologies (EMFs); addressing emotional and issues; reducing heavy metal load and ridding infections with targeted and cycled enzyme and herbal antimicrobial protocols; and addressing nutritional needs. Some studies show that herbal antimicrobial protocols are effective in improving the condition of 70 to 80 percent of advanced Lyme patients in four to six months, after the patients failed to improve on multiple courses of antibiotics. Can Strength Training Reduce the Risk of
Osteoporosis? By Rachel Quiles, MS, RDN, LD
Yes. Doing strength training exercise can increase bone density and help prevent osteoporosis. Numerous scientific studies have shown that weight-bearing and muscle-strengthening exercise performed regularly can dramatically reduce the risk of fractures and increase bone density. In her book, Strong Women, Strong Bones, Miriam E. Nelson, PhD, of Tufts University, Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, explains that women who walk for exercise have stronger bones than women who don’t exercise at all. But, she says, “…the gentle stimulation of walking takes decades to produce effects.” On the other hand, Dr. Nelson’s own research showed that “...strength training just twice a week dramatically cuts the risk of fractures for postmenopausal women. After a year, participants gained bone in their hip and spine; they became stronger and their balance improved.” During weight-bearing exercise, the muscles and related tendons place tension on the bones as muscles contract to lift the weight. This action stimulates the body to lay down more bone. Bones and Osteoporosis According to The National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF), “Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones. It happens when you lose too much bone, make too little bone, or both. As a result, your bones become weak and may break from a minor fall or, in serious cases, even from simple actions, like sneezing or bumping into furniture.” Although bones appear to be solid, they actually have a porous, honeycomb-like structure. Healthy bone is about 65% mineral, primarily calcium, and bone tissue is in a continuous cycle of breakdown and remodeling. In growing 54
children and young adults, the bone-building process is happening faster than breakdown, resulting in a net increase in bone mass. However, this balance begins to shift at around age 25, after which we tend to lose bone mass faster than it is rebuilt. As bone density decreases, the spaces in the honeycomb-like structure become larger. If too much bone is lost and these spaces become too large, there is a greater risk of breaking a bone from a minor accident or fall. Although women, especially postmenopausal women, are at greater risk for developing osteoporosis, this bone disease is not gender specific. Men are at risk, too. If you think you are at increased risk for osteoporosis, it is important to discuss this with your doctor and develop a plan of action. What Do the Experts Recommend? The National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends taking these steps to protect your bones: • Get enough calcium and vitamin D and eat a well-balanced diet • Engage in regular weight-bearing and muscle-strengthening exercise • Avoid smoking and limit alcohol Before starting an exercise program, consult your doctor. Southern Grace
By Lisa Lossie
Southern Grace National Queens
Southern Grace Pageants Founder & Director Melinda Rolader Bell
Butterflies in bellies, hot rollers in hair and smiles ready to sparkle. It’s Pageant Day! Milton Mom, Melinda Rolader Bell knows the feeling well. For ten years she competed in pageants. Now, she directs them. Bell founded Southern Grace Pageants in 2008 as a way to fund mission trips to Africa and Macedonia. Now her natural pageant system has grown and is a favorite for girls, baby to teen. “I love watching these girls grow up,” says Bell. “We had some start as babies, now they are in elementary school.” Backstage on pageant day, there’s a rainbow of dresses, and a whole lot of primping going on. In Bell’s system, girls under five wear short dresses, no make-up and nicely styled hair. Girls five and older wear long dresses and are allowed light make-up. “We want little girls to look like little girls,” says Bell. So what does it take to reign as queen? Judges look for poise, confidence and stage presence. Qualities that can also help develop leadership skills for life. "I’m not scared at all when I go on stage," says 5 year Madison. "It makes me feel so proud when they call my name.” Madison, a Milton Kindergartener, was bitten by the pageant bug last year. She is excited to represent her title this year, as one of Southern Grace's National Queens. 56
“Our National Queens are very involved in the community,” says Bell. “We collect for Toys for Tots, visit nursing homes, collect school supplies for teachers. We also do our 100% benefit pageant each year for Relay for Life.” Have a daughter who wants to rock the stage? Bell’s best advice, be prepared and do your homework. “Call the director, ask questions. Before you enter, watch a pageant first,” says Bell. Veteran Pageant Mom, Kayla Wood, advices to pick a dress to impress! “There are several ways to save money and cut corners but the dress isn't one of them. The dress is what judges see first.” Just like any activity, pageants take practice and lots of it! “You wouldn’t go into a football game without pads and a helmet! You don’t go to a pageant without your dress and heels,” says Bell. Ready to try a pageant, here are some of Southern Grace’s upcoming events: Miss Southern Grace Valentines Sunday 2/15 Miss Southern Grace Easter Saturday 3/14 Miss Holiday Explosion Saturday 4/25 A free pageant - great for beginners! Let’s Party! By Susan Vojnovic
KIDS PARTY TIPS birthday party used to be simple. A cake, a few friends, some party hats and a game of pin the tail on the donkey for excitement. But throwing a party today for your little one can be much more complicated. It can raise your stress and budget to a whole new level. One cake isn't enough, now we have a have second one to smash! We don’t just invite our closest friends, we invite the entire class! Not bad things, just things that make your job as the party planner a little more difficult. Need some help?
Planning a child's
Let Them Eat Cake Expensive bakery cake or homemade – who is this cake for? If your child is young, you might have more adult guests than children. So go ahead and splurge on a fancy, delicious bakery cake for the grownups, but have a simple homemade smash cake or cupcakes for the birthday cutie and friends to pulverize. Expensive cake for everyone you say? OK, but younger kids will probably take one small bite and leave the rest, so cut small pieces for them! Better Than Goody Bags Don't waste money on bags of little trinkets that get thrown away, give one neat thing instead. How about a king-size candy bar? A flashlight or cowboy hat? Maybe some cute hair accessories or cozy, fuzzy socks? Pick something that goes with your theme and is age-appropriate, tie on a "thank you for coming to my party" tag and you're all
locallifepublishing.com
set! A craft made at the party can double as the take-home gift. Decorate a mason jar and fill with candies and trail mix, paint a real horse shoe and add a ribbon for hanging. Bottom line, if you’re going to spend money, make it something they might actually use or keep. Making Memories Before your guests arrive, take pictures of the cake, tables, decorations and guest of honor in his/her perfectly clean birthday outfit. To make sure you get in some pictures, hand your camera to a friend to snap candid pictures of you and your child during the party. Get a group shot of everyone in attendance and use it on your thank you notes. It makes a nice keepsake for guests to remember this special day with friends. Get Some Help If you just don't have the time or desire to pull off a party by yourself, look for great professional party places in and around your town. Book your time, invite your guests, and show up -- a good party facility will take care of the rest! Susan Vojnovic is the owner and creator of Raisin's Ranch Pony Parties. Since 2009 she and her daughter, Ava, have been party planning and entertaining children and families with their ponies, mini horses and sweet farm animals. Susan lives in Roswell with her husband and 3 children. Her farm and event facility are located at 17955 Birmingham Hwy in Milton, GA. 770-617-1521.

QUICK Tax Guide
The City of Milton’s Finance Department is responsible for the billing and collection of city property taxes. Your property tax bill provides you with a legal description of your property, taxable values, exemptions, and the calculation of your tax bill. The annual millage rate is 4.731, all of which is designated to fund general government operations. General information Ad valorem taxes, more commonly known as property taxes, are levied for city operations and maintenance. When you call the police or fire department, play in a park or eat at an inspected restaurant, you are using services paid for by your property taxes. Your taxes also pay for services to oversee development, protect water and air from pollution, repair and build roads, and much more. Property taxes are the largest source of revenue to fund these services that you count on every day. All real estate and personal property is taxable unless exempted by law. Real property is land and generally anything that is affixed to the land. Personal property is everything not considered real property and usually consists of inventory and fixtures used in conducting business. The basis for ad valorem taxation is the fair market value of the property. The tax is levied on the assessed value of the property which, by law, is established at 40 percent of the fair market value. The amount of tax is determined by the tax millage rate. Property tax deadlines Failure to receive a bill does not relieve you of the responsibility to make payment by the due date. Property tax notices are issued on a calendar year basis and are typically mailed 58
around Sept. 1 each year and due 60 days after the bill date. This generally means a due date around October 31. If you are responsible for paying taxes on a property and have not received a tax bill by Sept. 15, contact the Finance Department at 678.242.2500 for the tax information, so that payment can be made before it becomes delinquent. If your mortgage company is responsible for your taxes, please send a copy of your bill to your mortgage company. If mailed, payments must be received by the due date. A one-time penalty of 10 percent will be charged after 90 days delinquency. Interest will accrue monthly at a rate of 1% of the base amount or $1.00, whichever is greater, the first day of every month until the taxes are paid. If a business was closed or the personal property (boats, equipment, etc.) was sold after Jan. 1 of the current year, the tax is still due. If the property closed or sold after Jan. 1, you must notify the Fulton County Board of Tax Assessors at 404.612.6440. All unpaid taxes will be advertised in a local newspaper as being delinquent and additional charges will be applied. A fee of $30 will apply to all returned checks. Any unpaid property taxes will be subject to the issuance of an execution (FiFa) in accordance with O.C.G.A. §48-3-3, which may result in potential proceedings toward tax sale. Additional unpaid personal property taxes will be subject to the revocation of your business license. Appeals Taxpayers may challenge an assessment by appealing to Fulton County Board of Assessors if property value is not reflective of the fair market value. For information on filing an appeal, please contact the Fulton County Assessors’ cityofmiltonga.us
Office at 404.612.6440. If you file an appeal against your property assessment, you are required to pay the bill by the due date based on a value set at the higher of your return value, or 85% of the value proposed by the Board of Assessors. Once the Fulton County Board of Assessors or Board of Equalization makes a final decision on your appeal, it will automatically forward the city the decision. The City of Milton will record the new value and finalize any billing. Methods of payment For your convenience, you may pay utilizing any of the following methods (Visa/MasterCard, American Express and Discover accepted): Online: www.cityofmiltonga.us; By phone: Call 678-2422500; By mail: 13000 Deerfield Parkway, Suite 107G Milton, GA 30004. Please make check(s) payable to City of Milton. Mail both the tax stub and your check or money order. In person: Finance Department: 13000 Deerfield Parkway, Suite 107G Milton. Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. Homestead exemptions Several types of homestead exemptions have been enacted to reduce the burden of ad valorem taxation. To qualify, property owners must own and occupy their home as primary residence as of Jan. 1. Milton City Council Getting Involved in Local Government Builds Community Please feel free to attend a city council meeting – all are open to the public by law. Who is my City Council representative? Milton is served by six council members and a mayor elected at large (meaning by everyone) every four years. Visit www.cityofmiltonga.us to view a map of the city broken up by council districts to see who represents you. How are council members elected? City Council members are elected every four years and serve in staggered terms. They are elected by everyone in the city but must reside in the specific district they represent. The mayor can be from anywhere in the city. When and where are City Council meetings? City Council meetings take place at 6 p.m. the first and third Mondays of the month, barring holidays, in City Council Chambers, which is at 13000 Deerfield Parkway Suite 107E. City Council also holds work sessions the second Monday of the month at the same time and place. Please check the city’s calendar for a full list of city-sponsored meetings and events. Any change in regularly scheduled council meetings or special called council meetings will be published in the Milton Herald, the city’s legal organ, and on the city’s online calendar. How can I see what will be discussed at a meeting? Full agendas of every City Council, board and commission meeting are posted online on the calendar and in the Complete Minutes and Agendas section. Agendas are posted a full week before the meetings to inform citizens about items up for discussion. You may also sign up for the City of Milton newsletter to receive pre- and post-meeting updates from the city’s Communications Department. How can I tell what happened at a meeting? City Council meetings are available from our web site via streaming broadcasts as they happen and are archived 48 hours after the meeting occurs. Council’s “action” minutes (recording motions or votes on items) are posted to the
66
“Complete Agendas and Minutes” section of the Web site within 48 hours of the regular or special called meetings. “Regular” minutes (transcription of full discussion and motions or votes) are posted after they have been approved by the Mayor and City Council or board chairman. Vote records are also sent to those who sign up for the City of Milton newsletter. How are items passed at the meeting? An item or items up for vote will first be read by the City Clerk. Upon completion of that reading and any staff presentations, which may include extensive question and answer periods from members of council, plus a call for public comment, a council member may make a motion to approve, deny or defer. Another council member must second the motion by saying “Second” before the Mayor can call for a vote. The motion will then be discussed. Again, discussion may be extensive. Finally, the Mayor will ask for council members to vote on the motion. That vote decides whether or not the item passes. Can I speak with or to council? You are always welcome to call and/or e-mail your city council representatives at any time. If you would like to speak at a City Council meeting, there is general public comment at the start of each meeting and comment times for topics germane to an issue heard that night. When you attend the meeting, you must fill out a public comment card and submit it to the City Clerk prior to the beginning of the meeting. Speakers will be heard in the order the cards are received. How do I make an appointment with the Mayor? You may make an appointment with the Mayor by contacting Executive Aide to City Manager, Mayor and City Council Christine Doss at 678-242-2492.

Three adult tennis teams won their divisions in the Fall at White Columns Country Club
5 Ways to Develop Mental Toughness By Amy Pazahanick, Director of Tennis at White Columns Country Club Anyone who has played tennis, for even a short period of time, knows full well that tennis is a very mental game. Here are some common areas where we see players, at all levels, falling short on the mental toughness scale: • Losing a match after being up by a large margin • Choking at pivotal moments • Losing to players who are at a distinct lower level, yet playing better against players who you perceive as “better” • Losing the first set at the speed of sound and not being able to regain control • Playing great in practices but never as good in a real match • Being overly affected (at the expense of your match) by the wind, the sun, your opponent, your opponents bad line call- intentional or unintentional (your opponent’s voice, their hair, their skirt --this list could go forever), noise, the court, ECT. The commonality is that these are things that you have no control over. If you have experienced any of the above phenomena in your tennis playing experience, to a large degree, it is not your physical skills that you need to focus, but rather your mental prowess. Five ways to develop more mental prowess: • Build confidence: Confidence is arguably THE FACTOR and nothing breeds confidence like action! This means that you have to practice to gain more confidence in match situations. locallifepublishing.com
• Frame your mind for success: How would you play if you knew you were going to win? If you can play from that perspective, success is more likely to come your way • Cultivate a short term memory: Focus has to be in the present moment to achieve mental prowess on the court. The only point that you should be playing is the one at hand. Tennis players must have a very short term memory. In fact, it needs to be sixteen seconds long, just long enough to forget the last point you played, whether it well or not well. • Use your mental energy wisely: It is all about where you are placing your mental energy. You are the only person who has control over what you think about when you are on the court. Place your mental energy on: the present moment, things you can control: YOURSELF, enjoying the process • Keep the pressure low: The less pressure you put on yourself the better you will perform. I always used to play great tennis when I was physically sick because when I was ill, I had zero expectations of myself. Mentally work yourself into the proper state of mind. Amy is Director of Tennis at White Columns and Founder of Agape AcadAMY. agapeacadAMY.com whitecolumnscountryclub.com
