IN HER OWN WORDS
M
MY STICKY SWEET OIL paintings transform glistening fruit into its own vibrant world. Capturing juicy pulp at the peak of ripeness highlights the beauty and vibrance of life. My paintings are intimate, surprising, enigmatic, bold as hell. My artwork takes close-ups to the extreme. The vibrant imagery is easily identified as organic but from there the imagination can take over. I constantly change the physical scale of my paintings and species of fruit to heighten the sense of mystery. I want to blur the boundaries between abstraction and representation, the microcosmic and macrocosmic, attraction and repulsion, whimsy and the scientific.
13
The bright, often tropical hues of my paintings and the variety of fruit that I paint evokes my personal childhood in South Florida, a multicultural mecca for the beautiful, vibrant, and weird. The audience’s Angela Faustina unfamiliarity with the In action on Pomegranate fruit imagery can elicit contemporary issues about American food culture and the prevalence of processed food. My artwork is internationally collected and I am currently represented by gallery43 in Roswell and Marietta, Georgia, and Colorida Gallery in Lisbon, Portugal. www.angelafaustina.com, www.gallery43.com
HomeStretch Offers
Home sweet Hope By Danielle Bartling “I NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD BE HERE. I have always paid my bills, taken care of my responsibilities. This doesn’t even make sense to me.” These words are the snapshot of a single mother’s thoughts as she realized she and her son were homeless for the first time. For this article she will be referred to as “Dawn.”
Images by LoriKay Photography, www.LoriKayPhotography.com
At age 50, Dawn moved to Atlanta from New York to care for her terminally ill mother. She was earning nine dollars per hour working as a para-professional in the school system and was in crisis shortly after her mother passed. Dawn’s low income and a slew of posthumous bills led to the accumulation of an immense amount of debt relative to her income. She then sought help from HomeStretch, a local nonprofit geared toward supporting working homeless families, enabling them to achieve stable housing, employment, finances and family life. HomeStretch welcomed Dawn and her son into one of their duplex apartments and she immediately embraced the program goals. HomeStretch mentors advised her to pick up supplemental work which eventually turned into a livable wage, cash flow, savings, benefits and a clean credit report. Dawn now works at Georgia Tech and is considered a ‘graduate’ within the HomeStretch program; meanwhile her son has

For 25 years, Roswell-based nonprofit HomeStretch has provided opportunities and hope for working homeless men and women to build new lives for themselves and their children. secured employment as a welding apprentice. In its 25th year, HomeStretch continues to equip families with the resources necessary to achieve lasting stability. Originally, the mission was a response to the need for affordable housing in North Fulton, but HomeStretch has expanded its endeavor to end the cycle of poverty through both supportive housing, education and opportunity. Kurt Hilbert, second-term board chairman, has worked with HomeStretch for over a decade, first volunteering, and now passionately leading the governing board. He is confident in saying, “We are setting our sights on what is to come over the next 25 years.” Recently Hilbert disclosed a personal connection to the homelessness concern. “I have a family member who happens to be homeless up in Chicago. I’m not able to influence or impact his
life [up North] so I made the decision to get involved down here where I live in Atlanta.” He describes the fulfillment he experiences when witnessing profound, positive changes among individuals and their families with HomeStretch. “To see people come through the program, show up feeling completely helpless and then be able to say, ‘I know how to budget. I know that I’m going to have a roof over my head and be able to provide for my family,’ is principally the most important thing.” Over the past 25 years, the organization has acquired 39 housing units, 23 of which are transitional and 16 are more graduate-oriented affordable units. And there are now discussions and hopes of expanding the crown jewel, the home on Millbrook Circle. But beyond brick and mortar, the two most priceless resources offered by HomeStretch to families are a skills toolbox and time.
(Continued)
COVER STORY
“These families need a moment where someone is willing to help them stop the crisis and invest in them just a little bit,” says Rose Burton, executive director. “They come to us in survival mode which is very ‘now’-focused. We offer temporary housing so the families can begin to think more long-range about what their future will look like outside of HomeStretch. To give [them] the time they need to ‘learn how to fish.’” A typical family looking for a modest two-bedroom apartment in Roswell must earn $19.04 per hour working 40 hours per week. Most HomeStretch clients are single mothers and low wage earners, so the same apartments considered “affordable” by these standards are not possible for them unless they work an unsustainable 92 hours per week. HomeStretch eases this burden and facilitates sustainable change which takes root over 2 years. These profound changes are possible through the fundamental benefits HomeStretch offers: safe, clean and affordable housing, Life Skills education classes, individualized case management as well as extensive work with financial and family mentors. One of HomeStretch’s recent goals is to expand its two-generation approach, maximizing success for parents and children who are impacted in fundamentally different ways. Between 55 and 65 children come through the program every year. HomeStretch recently hired a new social worker whose only clients will be the children. Rose recalled one particular recent volunteer, “Jay” who worked on the Millbrook Circle grounds as part of a corporate day of service. She said, “Following the volunteer welcome, ‘Jay’ announced to his colleagues that he lived on Millbrook as a child. His family was in the HomeStretch program and it led them to a stable place, which contributed to his current professional success. ‘Jay’s’ story, coming full circle, illustrates the impact of HomeStretch.” Rose credits much of HomeStretch’s 25 years of success to “the generosity and compassion that

Even things as simple as movie tickets or a pizza party would make for memorable nights of family fun. It was more than a quarter-century ago the core group of caring volunteers from North Fulton Community Charities, Roswell United Methodist Church, Roswell Presbyterian Church and St. David’s Episcopal Church joined forces with others in Roswell to conceive of HomeStretch. In its humble beginnings, there were no staff members, only volunteers. Today, community support includes dozens of faith-based, civic and many corporate supporters stretching out from all over the metro Atlanta region. “We started very slow and deliberate,” recalls Rev. Malone Dodson, Pastor Emeritus of RUMC and the last living founding father of HomeStretch. “Our main goal was to make sure people had a [comfortable] place to lay their head and to grow in our environment and surrounding areas. When it got going, the community responded with, ‘How can we help?’” And our local community continues to ask that today. National Garden Week is June 3 to June 9 Grow Your Own: Celebrate NGW with Your Own Sensory Oasis BY DANIELLE BARTLING Georgia Native Plant Society’s 2018 Plant of the Year is the American Beautyberry
F
Freshly cut grass and fertilizer are distinctive scents associated with fair weather in the South, where April showers bring May flowers and electric mowers reappear from the sheds. Did you know we will be celebrating National Garden Week from June 3 to June 9? Sponsored by National Garden Clubs, Inc., this week serves to encourage adding ‘beauty, splendor, fragrance and nutrition to our lives through the growing of herbs, vegetables, foliage and flowers,’ stated NGC President Nancy Hargroves. Over the last 65 years, Roswell Garden Club’s (www.roswellgardenclub.com) mission has been to create interest in civic improvement, namely the beautification of our home town. Each year, the club’s gardeners take on projects like updating and maintaining gardens at Barrington Hall and Smith Plantation, and decorating Roswell for the holidays.
In recent years, RGC donated a Peach Orchard to Barrington Hall. They also gifted the historic house grounds with a Butterfly Garden, which in 2015 was designated a National American Butterfly Association garden. Both of which are maintained by the club itself, who in addition takes the lead role on miscellaneous projects. Over at Smith Plantation, they planted a three-tier garden with heritage hydrangeas, a perennial garden with day lilies and a “Plant It Pink” garden with pink blossom azaleas. Members and volunteers have a blast during the wintertime as well, decorating Christmas trees in American Beautyberry the City Hall rotunda, at the Roswell Convention and Visitors Bureau, in the Adult Recreation Center, at the St. George Village retirement community and at Smith Plantation. The organization has earned 1st place from the Garden Clubs of Georgia for their holiday decoration efforts on at least two occasions. If you really know your stuff, you can become a

Grow Herbs ‘Master Gardener.’ The Master Gardener Program is a volunteer training program offered through North Fulton Master Gardeners ( www.nfmg.net) of the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension. Individuals are trained and certified to help educate their communities through horticultural projects and workshops. Are you ready to begin? Before you plant, you must plan; in other words, plot your plot. Determine the constraints of your time and budget as well as the intentions for your garden; are you motivated by aesthetic, function or edibility? How much space are you working with? Ground plot, raised bed or container? Level of sun exposure? Soil type?* *Soil testing is available through the UGA Extension Office of Fulton County. There is no better place to begin than at the Chattahoochee Nature Center, (www.chattnaturecenter.org) which hosts native plant sales both in the Fall and Spring. Take the guess work out of choosing plants at big box stores by choosing from a vast array of plants native to our own climate and eco-system. Native plants thrive in Roswell gardens and also attract birds and butterflies. So be sure to set your sights on native plants first - especially if your thumb is particularly green. The Georgia Native Plant Society (www.gnps.org) announced the Plant of the Year for 2018 is American Beautyberry (Callicarpa americana), which is a native perennial shrub with vividly purple berries. The plant grows in full sun to partial shade and is highly adaptable to a variety of soil conditions. Its tiny, tubular flowers are purely aesthetic, except to the butterflies that feed on their nectar in late spring. The following plants also fare particularly well in the Roswell summertime. Flowers: asters, begonias, cosmos, four o’clocks, geraniums, irises, oriental lilies, marigolds, maypops (passionflower), petunias, sunflowers, zinnias Herbs: basil (pesto), citronella (derived from geranium), mint, oregano, rosemary Fruits/Vegetables: beets, corn, kale, okra, snap beans, squash, sweet potatoes, tomatoes The routine of scooping, digging, pinching, pouring and picking is essentially a sensory ropes course, challenging our faculties of sight, smell, sound, touch and taste. It’s safe to say gardening is as enriching to the soul as it is the soil. www.LocalLifePublishing.com
Enjoy flavor all summer!
Mint
Fresh mint livens up sauces, salads and teas and can also lend its cool, peppery bite to flavorful Middle Eastern dishes.
Basil
A close relative to mint, basil offers a floral / clove-like flavor and aroma. Grow it sweet or Asian-style and add to meats, seafood, soups and stirfry.
Oregano
Found mostly in Mediterranean and Mexican cuisines, oregano dries well and offers a pungent aroma.

Family-wide Gift Guide Teacher’s Day: May 8 | Mother’s Day: May 13 | Father’s Day: June 17
#shoproswell By Danielle Bartling
T
TRUTHFULLY, EVERY SEASON IS A SEASON OF GIVING. FROM ALL THE NATIONAL holidays we try to keep up with all the special occasions scattered throughout the year, we’re always looking for another great gift for someone in our lives; or at least it feels that way, doesn’t it? Birthdays become birth-weeks and holidays become “holi-months.” This time of year is no exception. The
months of May and June give us several opportunities to celebrate the deserving, hardworking individuals in our lives: teachers, graduates, moms and dads. Admittedly, nobody is easy to shop for, whether it is our sons, sisters, brothers, daughters, grandchildren, co-workers, friends or friends-of-a-friend. So we planned ahead to make it easier this year. Check out these local gift giving ideas!
Teacher’s Day May 8 | THEME: THOUGHTFUL & PRACTICAL A teacher is always delighted by a simple and thoughtful handwritten note. Personalized expressions of gratitude are far more memorable than “From: [your name here]” on a card. Write at least three sentences! Teachers really appreciate gifts cards. We suggest giving her a gift card from somewhere specific and local. These gestures will stand out in a teacher’s mind more readily - perhaps even through final exams! Father’s Day
June 17th | THEME: No Wrapping Paper or Ribbon Men are stereotypically difficult to shop for, and therefore are repeatedly subject to the same boring gifts year after year: socks, ties and tools.
(www.chattnaturecenter.org). Each trip is led by a CNC naturalist and offers a unique introduction to the ecology of the Chattahoochee River.
This year, mix things up! Dads we talked to had a common theme: the things they said they would like are things that can’t typically be wrapped in ribbon and paper! That got us thinking, and we have ideas for you which will win you major brownie points and make you look like you put a lot of thought into this.
And finally, what man wouldn’t appreciate a gift from The Cigar Merchant (www.thecigarmerchant. net) on Alpharetta Hwy or a brewery tour of Roswell’s three new craft breweries: Gate City (www.gatecitybrewingcompany.com), Variant (www.variantbrewingcompany.com) or From the Earth (www.ftebrewing.com).
There’s the gift of ‘experience’ - either a single game or season ticket to his favorite team. For the adrenaline junky, how about a gift card for one of Roswell’s speedy attractions: Andretti (www.andrettikarting.com), War Games (www.wargamesatl. com), Cage Rage Sports (www.cageragesports.com) or Sharp Shooters (www.sharpshootersusa.com)?
What about four tickets for him and three friends or his sons to one of The Mill Kitchen and Bar’s ‘Guys’ Nights,’ seasonal tasting sessions featuring a flight of bourbons, craft beers, select cigars & The Mill’s BBQ for $40 pp. (www.themillkitchenandbar. com). And finally, there’s a new bar and restaurant opening this month on Oak Street, The Whisky Project - (www.twpatl.com) which promises a record breaking 1000 varieties of whiskey.
If the dad in your life is a little more low-key than that, give him six Saturday mornings off with vouchers for six buckets of balls at Georgia Golf Center off Cox Road (www.georgiagolfcenter.com). Another cool idea would be to give him a River Canoe Outing from the Chattahoochee Nature Center
So there you have it. Once we got going on this article we realized men actually aren’t that tough to shop for after all. We just have to remember to think outside of the (gift) box!

Graduation May/June | THEME: THINK GREEN Don’t feel pressured to monogram a pillowcase or engrave the commencement date onto a charm bracelet. There isn’t much involved in shopping for loved ones who graduate from something fantastic this month. Whether they’re finishing their education stage of middle school, highschool or college, just give money - and cash is king. To spice up a monetary gift order a giant personalized check-- just like in the movies or lottery winner announcements. Starting at $48, go to www.imagers.com/big-check with enough time to ship it. Or, pair your cash with a tasteful gift from the graduation selection at Schakolad Chocolate Factory on Woodstock Road (www.schakolad.com), where for just $10, cleverly include a $100 bill made of solid milk, dark or white chocolate (don’t forget to include the real one hundred dollar bill, too).

This year’s summer solstice is June 21, the longest day of the year and the first official day of summer. On average, Roswell is warm and sunny on this day with highs in the upper 80s lasting over 14 hours. Undoubtedly there are plenty of cosmetic errands to run before the season finally arrives.

BY CLAIRE MURPHY
Roswell-based Second Wind Dreams® is a 501(c)3 internationally recognizd nonprofit organization involved in more than 1000 eldercare communities in 20 countries. Weaving thousands of dreams from the basic to the sublime, their mission is simple: to change the perception of aging by fulfilling dreams and offering innovative educational opportunities to caregivers and their communities. Founder P.K. Beville wrote a book titled Second Wind ($9.95 to $19.95 on Amazon) about many of the wonderful, colorful and sometimes hysterical people who live and work in nursing homes. She has designed and implemented mental health programs currently used in 800 nursing homes in the U.S. With a B.S. degree in Psychology from Georgetown College and Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from Eastern Kentucky University, she began to develop their flagship program Virtual Dementia Tour® which offers sensitivity training to change negative perceptions of aging. She has been recognized by several organizations, including being named an Outstanding Southerner of the Year by Southern Living magazine; a Phenomenal Woman of North Fulton by the American Business Woman’s Association; a recipient of the WXIA 11Alive Community Service Award for her work with residents of eldercare communities; a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from LeadingAge Georgia for her contributions to the field of aging; a recipient of the TBS Pathfinder Award for Volunteer Pioneers; a recipient of the Top 100 Volvo Heroes Award; a recipient of Harlequin’s More Than Words Award for her work with residents of eldercare communities; and, a recipient of the L’Oreal Paris Woman of Worth Award. MY CHAT with P.K. Beville BY DEBRA BOICE
IN MY JOURNEY AS A WRITER I MEET THE MOST fascinating, earth-changing human beings with quests to change the world as they see it. My interview with P.K. Beville was no different. P.K is Founder and CEO of Second Wind Dreams, Creator of Virtual Dementia Tour and author of Second Wind. P.K. initially started working in long-term care in l983 as a clinical psychologist for nursing homes, dementia and cognitive care facilities. She found that their hopes and dreams were being ignored, and she felt they had never been asked the question, “If you had one thing to wish for, what would it be?” So she began asking that very question, explaining that the answers she received were wonderful because of the simplicity: visit the gravesite of my wife, have a steak dinner, go to the movies, to name a few. She asked them how they felt about their future and many told her, “Great!” www.MyRoswellMagazine.com
P.K. went on to explain, “After hearing so much from so many visits, my brain said 'this is a call to action.’ On January 15th, 1997 I made the decision to design a grassroots effort, meaning no big corporation. No hoops, something simple for dreams to be fulfilled; simple for all involved whether churches, high schools, doctor's offices, you, me; to make dreams come true. This would change the perception of aging... still vital ‘if we allow it’. Six dreams a day are being fulfilled by SWD. We have a team of ‘Dreamweavers’.

I get asked a lot ‘what is my favorite dream request? There are so many but one is especially seared into my soul. A gentleman simply wished for a cup holder for his wheel chair. I got one and took it to him in the nursing home. The look on his face was amazing; he started to cry, looked at me and said, ‘Now I can come out of my room and get involved. I have a condition where I need constant hydration. Now I can leave my room because I have a place to put my drink."
aquaplumbingga.com
P.K. explained that elders have an uphill battle when it comes to perception, but they have an innate sense of serendipity gained through experience, giving this example, “Another gentleman who lived in South Carolina had a dream of seeing his brother who lived in California; he had not seen him in 40 years. We raised the money and flew him out on Christmas Day. His brother met him at LAX airport, and they visited for 4 days; then we flew our gentleman back home to S.C. His brother in L.A. passed away the very next day. Dreams are eternal."
Stay REFRESHED.
I asked P.K. What keeps you ‘Young at Heart’? Smiling, she told me, “I would love to wax eloquently about some metaphysical thing that keeps me grounded but the truth is, shopping for me or someone else can lift my spirits as nothing else can!"

FREE THING TO DO!
Roswell Farmers and
National Pie Day is coming up in July! Last year at the Farmers Market, the winner of the pie contest (adult division) was Carrie’s Peach and Custard Pie with Pecan Crust You can make it at home!
Artisans Market
provides fresh foods
CARRIE’S PEACH & CUSTARD PIE
every Saturday,
INGREDIENTS
For the crust: 1 1/4 cup all purpose flour 2 tbsp powdered sugar 1/4 cup coarsely ground raw pecans 3/4 tsp kosher salt 1 stick cold butter plus 2 tbsp cold butter, divided and cut into cubes Ice water, 4-6 tbsp
8AM to Noon through the end of
October at Roswell City Hall.
For the filling: 3-4 fresh peaches, peeled, pitted and sliced in half; or 6-8 drained canned peach halves 2 large egg yolks 1/2 cup sugar 6 tbsp (3/4 stick) butter, melted and cooled 1/3 cup all purpose flour 1 tsp vanilla 1/2 tsp kosher salt A pinch of fresh grated nutmeg
TO MAKE THE CRUST: In a large bowl, add flour, powdered sugar, ground pecans, and salt and whisk to combine. Add 1 stick of cold butter that has been cut into cubes, and use a pastry blender to thoroughly cut the butter into the flour mixture. Once the butter pieces are pea-sized, add the other 2 tbsp of cold butter cubes. Continue using the pastry blender until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces of butter. Add ice water, a tablespoon at a time, and stir with a spatula until the dough begins to adhere to itself. Once it can be pressed into the bottom of the bowl with your hands, and then turned over with no loose dry mixture, it is ready to refrigerate and rest. Press it into a round, flat disk, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hr, or up to 2 days before rolling.
www.roswellfam.com
How To
PEEL FRESH PEACHES:
After resting, roll out the pastry to a circle that will fill a 9 in pie pan. Place in the pan and flute the edges. Refrigerate for 30 mins. Preheat oven to 400 F.
Submerge peaches in boiling water for approximately 30 seconds, then quickly remove and submerge in ice water. The skin will come off easily by hand. Use immediately or toss with a little lemon juice to prevent browning.
Blind bake the crust with weights and parchment for 20 minutes. Remove from the oven and remove the weights and parchment, then use a fork to prick holes in bottom and sides of the crust. Return it to the oven without the weights and parchment for 5-10 more minutes, until the crust is golden brown all over. While crust is in the oven, begin to make the filling by whisking together the egg yolks, sugar, melted butter, flour, vanilla, salt, and nutmeg. The mixture will be relatively thick. Once the crust is out of the oven, fill it while it is still hot. Arrange the peaches, cut side down, over the bottom of the crust. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the peaches. Bake the pie at 400 F for 10 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 300 F and bake until the custard is brown and crusty on top and appears firmly set in the center when the pan is shaken, about 1 hr longer. If the top of the pecan crust begins to over-brown, cover crust only with aluminum foil. Pie can be served warm or at room temperature, and can be refrigerated for up to 1 day.

RM Finds Another Good-doer!
MICHAEL CURLING GEORGIA-BASED AMIGOS FOR CHRIST WORKS shoulder-to-shoulder with Nicaraguan neighbors to bring clean water, healthcare, education, and economic opportunity to some of the most rural communities in that underprivileged population. Roswell’s Michael Curling is board chairman of this nonprofit which proclaims on its website that faith compels its volunteers to take action and make Christ visible to each person with whom it comes in contact. Michael holds a BBA in Finance from the University of Georgia and an MBA from Virginia Tech. He is now Director of Investments for the Roswell investment firm New Kent Capital, where he develops and implements portfolio investment strategies and manages external banking relationships. He oversees a portfolio that includes five commercial redevelopment projects, one of which is the award-winning 1028 Canton Street, which is probaMichael Curling bly better recognized by the tenant’s name, local favorite Table & Main Restaurant and Bar. Michael also serves on the Roswell Convention & Visitors Bureau Board of Directors. The need in Nicaragua is great; it’s the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Kidney disease kills more people each year than in any other nation. Most children don’t finish the sixth grade. Skin disease, parasites, and respiratory disease run rampant. Improved health and family life is impossible to achieve alone, yet hope remains. Michael Curling is very active in the Roswell community, has a young family and still finds the time to be meaningfully involved in causes important to him. We at RM think that’s just awesome.
