TOLBERT YILMAZ SCHOOL OF DANCE and the Roswell Dance Theatre present

The Nutcracker Article By LYNN GILLEN

The curtain is opening on Roswell Dance Theatre’s 29th annual production of The Nutcracker, directed by Nancy Tolbert Yilmaz and Mary Lynn Taylor. With 350 performers, this Nutcracker is the largest and oldest in North Fulton. The cast includes world-class professionals who have danced nationally and internationally and aspiring young professionals from the Roswell Dance Theatre. Families have returned year after year to enjoy this wonderful tradition. Gorgeous costumes, magical scenery, beloved music and exquisite dancing will delight all who enter. The 12-performance run opens Friday, November 24, 2017 through Sunday, December 3.

T

When Roswell Dance Theatre began The Nutcracker in 1988, there was a single public performance and it was excellent! Fast forward to 2017 and it is a Roswell favorite with special events throughout the 2-week period. Three performances offer group rates for Girl Scout troops. Two daytime shows invite school children to experience the magic of theatre.

A Sugarplum Tea and Character breakfast are sellout events for young guests who would like to meet the cast, get autographs, enjoy a sumptuous buffet and meet Santa! And the December 2nd Saturday evening performance begins with an outstanding Gala including exquisite food and beverages, catered by Hugo’s Oyster Bar of Roswell. To commemorate the shows, there is an extensive Nutcracker-themed gift table to find the perfect souvenir to take home and enjoy. Purchase tickets at RoswellNutcracker.com. Roswell Dance Theatre is the resident performing arts company of the Tolbert Yilmaz School of Dance.

A Roswell Wedding BY DELISA BARKLEY

On Saturday, October 14, Caroline Roberts and Jason Deloney were married at Horseshoe Bend Country Club in Roswell. The ceremony took place in the Club’s Parterre Garden and was followed by a reception on the driving range. Horseshoe Bend Country Club's General Manager Jacqueline Welch explains although her team hosts weddings yearround, late Spring and early Fall seem to be the peak seasons, most likely due to Roswell’s weather patterns. That’s no surprise. According to a study by The Knot, the most popular months to have a wedding in the South are May (15%) followed by October (14%). The most popular month to pop the question is December (16%). The average length of engagment—from ring to wedding— is 14 months. ”While wedding budgets continue to rise, with the national average at $31,213, guest lists are shrinking. The average wedding now has 136 guests," according to the editors at The Knot. The newlyweds raved about the waterfall, bar doors, bridges and grand stairway leading to the Garden at Horseshoe Bend; and they made use of the outdoor and indoor space (in case of rain). “Luckily, we had a wonderful fall evening,” Welch says; “And the fog rolled in perfectly from the river, as if it was planned.” The bride and groom’s paths first crossed on Tinder, the popular mobile dating app for singles across the Southeast. They were engaged in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, which the newlyweds describe as, "The most beautiful place we have ever seen." Caroline’s family belongs to Horseshoe Bend; which is where she grew up. Jason, an avid golfer, agreed and loved the idea of having their wedding outside. This was a grand event, with a 14-person wedding party and 130 guests. They opted to have their reception outside and under a clear top tent with string lights and chandeliers. Their first dance was to, “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran. Other favorites in the evening’s playlist were Sweet Home Alabama, Rocky Top and Sweet Caroline. The Roswell Convention & Visitors Bureau is hosting their annual wedding showcase on January 14th at the DoubleTree by Hilton-Atlanta/Roswell, located at 1075 Holcomb Bridge Road. I

If you are one who still believes gift cards are an “impersonal” gift then you are showing your age. My favorite thing to give and receive for any occasion is a gift card. I like to wrap it fancy. Hands-down a gift card is the way to give and get. A gift card to one of my favorite restaurants, a spa or salon or a unique boutique means a giver has paid attention to what I like, especially for a thing I normally wouldn’t spend my money on. In essence the giver is saying, “I know you wouldn’t spend the money here on yourself, but I think you’re worth it.” What do I want for Christmas? I never know the answer to that question. I have two high-school aged sons, and gift cards are their 1st choice for every occasion. Here is a quick list for you to get your gift card presents this season from local businesses:

CRAFT BREWERIES

IN ROSWELL

G

Grab a friend and visit one (or all four!) of Roswell’s craft breweries to enjoy tours, tastings, food & music. Roswell is becoming a BOOM TOWN for good beer. Here is the low down:

GATE CITY BREWING COMPANY

43 Magnolia Street, Roswell GA 30075 gatecitybrewingcompany.com • (678) 404-0961 Gate City Brewing Company was founded in 2013. Gate City’s name derives from Atlanta, Georgia’s nickname, the “Gate City.” In the 1800s, prior to the Civil War, Atlanta was the center of commerce in the south. Once known as Terminus, Atlanta served as a hub for railroads heading north, to the port of Savannah, south, and ultimately west. Atlanta branded itself as the “Gate” to the South, hence the name “Gate City.” The logo—the phoenix rising—is a testament to the grit, perseverance and sheer will of the city and region alike. At Gate City they strive to brew beers that embody the very same independent spirit that inspired them to chase their dreams of opening Roswell’s first craft brewery.

FROM THE EARTH BREWING COMPANY

1570 Holcomb Bridge Road, Roswell GA 30076 ftebrewing.com • (770) 910-9799 Tim Stevens designed, developed and opened multiple restaurants in the past 15 years and has now opened the first true Farm-To-Table Brewpub outside the Atlan-

ta-perimeter. Through relationships already formed with farmers from his past experience, this neighborhood gathering place, which opened in October, offers the freshest product available. Their mission is to provide their guests with a world-class dining experience in a casual environment. Craft Beer, Cocktails and Farm-to-table cuisine. From the Earth Brewing Company is located in the Connexion Shopping Center just East of GA 400.

VARIANT BREWING

66 Norcross Street, Roswell GA 30075 variantbrewing.com • mike@drinkvariant.com Matt Curling, Variant’s owner and Brewmaster says the focus, “Is on variety rather than quantity, so the smaller fermenters allow us to explore some more experimental recipes.” The brewery just opened in October and is walking distance to the Canton Street shopping and dining district. Of the 3,600 square feet building, most is dedicated to their brewhouse. Their goal is to create a unique drinking experience and craft a beer for everybody. By modifying traditional recipes and experimenting with various ingredients they create a wide variety of styles, something for every consumer.

ABBEY OF THE HOLY GOATS

4000 Northfield Way, Ste. 800, Roswell GA 30076 abbeyoftheholygoats.com • (470) 282-1444 Abbey of the Holy Goats is a small-scale craft brewery. The first female-owned Brewery in Georgia, founder Kathy Davis decided either to start a goat farm in some remote wilderness or pursue her passion of producing her award-winning Belgian-style beers for

the public. The brewery won out, and Abbey of the Holy Goats was born. The Abbey produces innovative Belgian-style beers designed for perfect food pairing. Davis said the name, Abbey of the Holy Goats, encompasses many of her interests in life. “The name comes from my interest in abbeys as far as living in

them, and the beer styles and goats come from my love of goats. And, of course, it’s also a play on the words ‘holy ghost.’ The monastic lifestyle is still something that really interests me. No matter what religion you follow, it’s always a wonderful thing to endeavor towards.”

SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY NOVEMBER 25

BY CLAIRE MURPHY

T

The Saturday after the Thanksgiving holiday has, in recent years, been dubbed “Small Business Saturday.” American Express started the campaign in 2010 to focus consumer awareness of local retail and service-oriented business.

Each year on this day, Americans still recovering from their turkey and mashed potatoes swarm into bookstores, boutiques, art galleries and specialty shops in their communities to support small business owners.

Our advice: Sleep in on Black Friday. Instead, wake up early Saturday, November 25th to make the rounds of Roswell to purchase Christmas and Hanukkah gifts, locally. Shop locally-owned businesses in Roswell for cigars, original art, books, clothing, accessories, jewelry, chocolate, antiques, craft beer, shoes and Big Green Eggs. Last year, Small Business Saturday generated $16.2 billion in spending for small businesses nationwide, which was a 14 percent increase from 2015. Local business owners capitalize on the big day with increased marketing efforts and special promotions as a way to increase sales. After Thanksgiving, our community gets back into the groove of this annual gift-giving holiday season.

24

The Connexion Shopping Center at 1570 Holcomb Bridge Road is a great place to start the day on November 25th. Businesses at The Connexion include Kale Me Crazy, Taqueria Tsunami, Foundation Social Eatery, J’s Wine, McDowell Chiropractic, Red Apple Pharmacy, Hammond Nails, Cycleworks, Golftec, Planet Fitness, East Roswell Veterinary Hospital, Circle Noodle, From the Earth Brewing Company and Tuscany Fine Furnishings, winner of four straight awards for “Best Furniture Store in Roswell” by the U.S. Commerce Department. Roswellians can venture out blind that day, window-shopping to see if anything fancy catches their eyes; or, they can make a plan to determine which locally-owned businesses will make the cut. For a quick resource of locally-owned businesses in 30075 and 30076 go online to visitroswellga.com to view the digital version of the visitors Guide to Good Times. Or, stop in the Roswell Visitors Center at 617 Atlanta Street for a complimentary printed copy. Then go out and shop small on November 25th. Make a commitment to local. It’s good for the whole community.

East of GA 400 BY JENNIFER MEHALL

Mother Nature has a mind of her own with warmer temperatures carrying through to the end of October. As the holidays approach cooler weather is rushing in, and sweaters are coming out. We got a jump on some of the holidays happenings on the Eastside. Santa Claus and candy canes are in store for the children who are lucky enough to attend the Candy Cane Run and Candy Cane Hunt at East Roswell Park on December 9th from 5PM until 7:30PM. The Run begins with a bang at 5PM and pizza is served to the attendees afterwards. The Hunt begins at 6PM, and the competition is tough as little sleuths search for the biggest candy canes, which can be redeemed for great prizes. Register for both of these festive events online at roswellgov. com. Kids are sure to make memories at the Pajama Party with Santa December 15th at the East Roswell Recreation Center. It’s a parents-night-out so adults ready to get a break or a needed date night can drop their children at the Rec Center at 6:30PM. Parents are not required to return until 10:30PM. Registration is required. This event is busy with snacks, crafts, movie watching and is a popular night. Slots are sure to fill quickly, so register early online at roswellgov.com. The new East Roswell Library located at 2301 Holcomb Bridge Road is hosting events through Christmas. The

‘Bat-Tastic’ Halloween Event just recently featured a live bat owned by the local ‘Bat Lady’ named Robin. She travels with her bat to talk about its habitat, how it lives and survives. Robin is a former teacher and works with Chattahoochee Nature Center to showcase the little creature. The Connexion Shopping Center just east of GA 400 is filled with innovative new businesses as well as fantastic other establishments which have recently received an updated façade. These fine folks hosted a Spring Festival in May as a grand re-opening and are planning a big holiday event, as well. The Shopping Center is located conveniently close to GA400 at 1570 Holcomb Bridge Road. Foundation Social Eatery offers American cuisine with quality, fresh ingredients featuring European influences from coastal Spain, Italy and France. Chef Mel Toledo is making holiday cooking easy for you with a ‘Thanksgiving to Go’ menu. In its third year, the menu includes cider-brined turkey, green bean almandine, gravy, Yukon gold potato puree and FSE stuffing. Some patrons plan to make the big feast extra easy and add-on a dessert or bread. This deliciousness is made-to-order and limited to just twenty-five orders. It is first-comefirst-served, and usually sells out very quickly. Orders are being taken now. foundationatl.com Taqueria Tsunami is a Latin-Asian fusion restaurant which serves tacos, quesadillas and all the traditional cultural fare. A significant aquatic weed problem occurred in one of the CNC’s three ponds. A local water resource management firm was brought in to tackle the issue in a way which didn’t impact the area’s resident wildlife (like the endangered Bald Eagle).

T

Restoring Balance in the Local Eco-system

The Chattahoochee Nature Center is an environmental learning center nestled just across the road from the Chattahoochee River in Roswell. This scenic property features native plant gardens, wetlands, and woodland trails, and is open to visitors of all ages. When a significant aquatic weed problem occurred in one of the center’s three ponds, local water resource management firm Aquascape Environmental was brought in to tackle the issue. Aquascape Environmental was motivated to “think green” before it became trendy to do so. They strive to go above and beyond in their Green Initiatives. They always include trash removal as part of their lake maintenance service, which prevents thousands of pounds of trash from moving downstream, impacting rivers. The team quickly identified the offending species as Eurasian Watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum L.), a non-indigenous aquatic species that is known for aggressively displacing native aquatic plants, decimating natural diversity, and destroying wildlife habitat. The management firm recommended the most effective and efficient removal method for Eurasian Watermilfoil, which is treatment with an EPA-approved aquatic herbicide. However, because the CNC is home to many resident wildlife, including endangered Bald Eagles, the center’s staff and Board expressed reservations about the

28

introduction of an herbicide to the natural ecosystem. In consideration of those concerns, Aquascape Environmental presented an alternative to herbicide treatment: stocking the pond with triploid grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella). “Triploid” carp are bred with an extra set of chromosomes to ensure sterility and can be used to control submersed aquatic plants. Strictly herbivorous, the fish consume aquatic vegetation without disturbing other wildlife. The Board agreed to the plan, and the fish were stocked at a high rate, with the goal of getting the weed infestation under control as quickly as possible without the use of herbicide. Unfortunately, nature had other ideas. Shortly after the carp were stocked, river otters migrated to the pond from the nearby Chattahoochee River. The river otters preyed on the carp, decimating the population. Before long, the Eurasian Watermilfoil was back. It was then apparent a herbicide treatment would be necessary to save the pond. Partnering with SePRO Aquatics, a developer of invasive aquatic plant management products, they tailored a treatment option, which provided an acceptable level of comfort with minimum impact on resident wildlife. The Executive Director of the Chattahoochee Nature Center, Chris Nelson, reported two months after the treatment, “It had a positive impact on the invasive material with no known impact to wildlife. The team at Aquascape Environmental was wonderful to work with.”

Saluti! Osteria Mattone’s Four Year Anniversary Celebration 5 – 9:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 13 thru Wed, Nov. 15 Osteria Mattone, 1095 Canton St., Atlanta, GA. 30075

F

Founded by Ryan Pernice, RO Hospitality opened its first restaurant, Table & Main, in Roswell in 2011 with a clear, confident vision of becoming the neighborhood’s adopted clubhouse.

Each guest is encouraged to curate his or her unique experience choosing between a quick bowl of pasta and cicchetti in the bar room or a threecourse dinner in the main dining room. Osteria Mattone offers lunch, dinner and weekend brunch, is located at 1095 Canton Street.

“We’re proud of our progress towards achieving that goal, being fortunate to work with amazing people as we hone our community focus,” beams Pernice. RO has since added two additional communitydriven restaurant concepts, Osteria Mattone at 1095 Canton Street and Coalition Food and Beverage, opening soon in downtown Alpharetta.

Their team relies on five major characteristics to nurture the tradition of excellent hospitality their restaurants represent: warmth, optimism, ownership, conviction, and loyalty. With those values they create positive experiences for guests.

Osteria Mattone is a neighborhood restaurant on Canton Street serving regional Italian cuisine with a heavy focus on Roman fare, combining the casual spirit of an osteria with the more formal dining of a trattoria. Inspired by their travels through Bologna, Naples, and Rome, owners Ryan and Daniel Pernice join Executive Chef Eric Sell to bring the tastes of Italy to Roswell diners. What Italian restaurant would be complete without an award-winning wine selection? Daniel, a trained sommelier, carefully selects Osteria’s extensive wine offerings to best match each guest’s personal taste.

30

Osteria Mattone will be celebrating its Four Year Anniversary with an extraordinary 4-course menu featuring Crispy Oysters, Baked Rigatoni, Swordfish and Chocolate Bonet! The limited-edition menu will be available for dinner only from November 13-15 for $44pp, with the option to add on wine pairings from sommelier Daniel Pernice for an additional $22. Regular menu items will also be available for those who choose to commemorate the occasion by enjoying their classic dishes. REAL ESTATE

ROSWELL MARKET UPDATE

Selling A Home Over the Holidays?

S

By Tracy Coles Hernandez Group Buyer Specialist

Selling a home over the holidays was once considered the height of folly. Everyone knows that spring is selling season. Right? There may have been some truth to that in the past; but this year is different. In August price increases slowed or dropped in many markets. Inventories at some price points are back to normal. Buyers are once again searching online real estate sites looking for a house like yours.

5 TIPS TO SELLING DURING HOLIDAYS

1. Hire a professional real estate agent. A full-time, professional agent understands your area. She will guide you with pricing, supply market resources, and will need to be available during the holidays to show and negotiate offers.

2. Price to Sell.

This is not the time to try to squeeze an extra $10,000 out of your home. A knowledgeable agent will provide a good competitive market analysis. Pricing your house right is key to getting it sold. Overpriced homes don’t sell.

3. Stage your home.

Your home must be in tip-top shape. Wash windows, paint walls and trim, make sure it is white-glove clean! Put away ALL of the extra stuff (clutter) that you don’t use every day including family photos and collectibles. Be careful not to overdo holiday decorations.

4. Target your market.

A skilled agent will market your home with professional photographs on the right web sites. Buyers make their initial decision to view in person because of these online photos.

5. Be flexible. Flexibility with showing times is crucial. Everyone is busy this time of year, so this will streamline the process and create a win-win for both parties.

ARTaroundroswell

Many active Roswell residents gathered in October for a spectacular Gala to Keep the Art! in Roswell.

Funds raised at the Keep the Art! in Roswell Gala were directed towards the purchase of “Sentience” by Atlanta-based artist David Landis which will now remain a permanent work-of-art in the Heart of Roswell Park on Canton Street. The purchase was possible because of a challenge grant created by the Roswell Downtown Development Authority (Roswell DDA) and the success of Roswell Arts Fund’s Keep the Art! campaign, which included the PartyAround Roswell gala event and donations from the local Roswell community. Roswell DDA agreed to match $10,000 raised by the community to Keep the Art!

Ignite, Inspire, Impact: (L to R): Randy Schultz and Dave Schmit from Roswell Downtown Development Association donate $10,000 to Roswell Arts Fund, received by Board Members Marie Willsey and Rochelle Mucha.

“Sentience has activated the Heart of Roswell Park, which I see as a focal point of our community,” said Randy Schultz, Chair, Roswell DDA. “This piece encapsulates the charm and natural beauty of our city. It has become an icon of our community and its future.” Local artist David Landis chose the title Sentience for this piece because it means “to feel.” “My aim was to have the viewer experience some emotional reaction when encountering the piece,” said Landis. According to the report, Leveraging Public Investment in the Arts, by Georgia Council for the Arts, “The arts continue to improve local economies through strategies that promote tourism, downtown development, entrepreneurism, community identity, and quality of life.” Roswell Art Fund’s goal is to raise at least $60,000 to add selected sculptures to the city’s permanent collection of public art. Sentience is one of ten sculptures featured in the 2017 ArtAround Roswell sculpture tour, and it joins two other permanent pieces purchased from the 2016 ArtAround Roswell tour, Smoke in Roswell Town Square and Oak Leaf Triptych in Roswell Area Park. “We hope to ignite further awareness and interest of the arts by raising funds to keep four sculptures from this year’s tour in our city,” said Rochelle Mucha, Chair, Roswell Arts Fund. ArtAround Roswell is one of the initiatives of Roswell Arts Fund, an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that works in collaboration with the City of Roswell. The program features ten sculptures on display through the end of December 2017. artaroundroswell.org, roswellartsfund.org

Take an Artistic Seat on Canton Street

Roswell is growing its public art collection by welcoming its newest masterpiece to Heart of Roswell Park. Heart of Roswell Bench, created by mosaic artist Jennifer Freeman, captures the heartbeat of downtown Roswell. The bench design is a playful take on the City’s logo, incorporating the river and Roswell’s history. Ripples of blues and greens flow and reflect through colorful, diverse circles that take a modern twist on water wheels. After months of design and mosaic tiling, the bench was completed in October and was unveiled during Roswell’s 67th Frances McGahee Youth Day Parade. Children and adults stood in line to be first to pose with the bench and to meet the artist. Artist Jennifer Freeman, owner of Mosaic Odyssey, has been creating mosaics for over 20 years, studying in

Ravenna, Italy and at Domus Orsoni in Venice. She has exhibited in fine art shows and galleries, and is a member of the Society of American Mosaic Artists. Her public artwork has also been exhibited in Norcross, Duluth, Johns Creek and Suwanee. With guidance from the recently adopted Public Art Master Plan by Mayor and City Council and the efforts of the Roswell Arts Fund, the bench meets criteria set forth by public input and community feedback collected during the planning process. The plan highlights the community's desire for art that reflects Roswell’s history, creates meeting spaces, and embraces Roswell’s spirit.

L

Local Roswell Author Donnie Kanter Winokur will present her memoir, Chancer- How One Good Boy Saved Another, with special guest Quinn, their service dog at the Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta (MJCCA) at 10AM on Thursday, November 16th. Admission to this event is free to the community. For information, call the MJCCA Box Office at 678.812.4005, or visit atlantajcc.org/bookfestival. Donnie Kanter Winokur and her husband, Rabbi Harvey Winokur, could never have imagined the heart-wrenching struggle after they decide to adopt two infants from Russia, a girl and a boy born two days apart, both from different parents. As Iyal and Morasha grow, it becomes clear that Iyal’s development is drastically lagging behind his sister’s. At age four, the parents received the difficult diagnosis that Iyal was born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. The book explains while finally having a “name” for what was happening in their son, it provided little relief as they tried to cope with the lifelong impact of his disability. In the book, the Winokur’s' marriage was unraveling because they felt hopeless with their son's more challenging symptoms, such as his regular outbursts and rages. Donnie decided to try an innovative, untested, four-pawed solution: a golden retriever service dog named Chancer. Chancer is specifically trained

Am I Just Sad? O r could i t b e S . A. D. ?

I

By Kim Kirkup, MA. NCC. LPC., The Milton Therapist

If you are like me, you love the nip in the air and the leaves changing colors, which signal winter’s approach.

deficiency may underlie SAD, so supplementing with it may help.

However, are you also feeling down, craving carbs, lacking energy and/or having difficulty focusing for no “apparent” reason? Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression which typically follows a seasonal pattern. SAD usually occurs in late autumn or early winter. No one knows exactly what causes SAD, but it is likely a response to shorter hours of daylight. There are no medical tests specific to SAD, which occurs predominantly in those under 30 and more frequently in women. Treatments can be used to prevent the onset of symptoms. Daily aerobic exercise is the most effective preventative treatment, especially if performed outdoors in natural light. Adequate sleep and an anti-inflammatory diet which includes Omega-3 is helpful, as well – fatty acids help promote emotional balance. Some research suggests that a vitamin D

Arranging your home or office so that you’re exposed to more outdoor light may help. Daily exposure to very bright light via a full-spectrum light source, such as a light box is often recommended. Address your symptoms at the end of the summer, before the more severe effects develop. Light boxes can be purchased without a prescription, but a visit with a mental health professional is the recommended first step. Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is a time-sensitive, structured, present-oriented psychotherapy directed toward solving current problems and teaching clients skills to modify dysfunctional thinking and behavior. CBT is a psychotherapy based on the way individuals perceive a situation is more closely connected to their reaction than the situation itself. CBT is helping clients change their unhelpful thinking and behavior that lead to lasting improvement in their mood and functioning. This is a good treatment for SAD. A therapist can help patients identify negative, self-defeating thoughts and help implement new behaviors to combat SAD.

How well do you Know Your Heart? Know Your Heart is a screening program designed to determine risk of heart disease, stroke and other serious conditions. Each Know Your Heart participant receives a personalized report with test results, reviewed with a WellStar Medical Group, Cardiovascular Medicine provider. The consultation also includes risk factor education, diet, weight and exercise recommendations. Call 770-956-STAR (7827) to determine eligibility and to schedule an appointment.

WellStar North Fulton Hospital is now offering the Know Your Heart program, a screening that can help determine patients’ risk for heart disease, stroke and other serious conditions. The WellStar Know Your Heart program is a preventive, self-pay screening program that offers two levels of testing performed at North Fulton Hospital. Patients can get basic or advanced screenings depending on their age, symptoms and risk factors. “This is a very successful program offered by WellStar Health System and we’re excited to offer it here at North Fulton,” said Hunt Anderson, M.D., medical director of North Fulton’s cardiology program. “Oftentimes we know that big events like heart attacks or strokes could have been prevented if risk factors had been addressed, so it is important to take a proactive approach.” The screening uses a combination of basic labs and a cardiac CT scans to identify heart disease before someone shows any signs or symptoms. The labs look at things like inflammation and cholesterol which can be indicators of heart disease. The cardiac CT calculates a calcium score. This low radiation scan looks at the calcium buildup in the walls of coronary arteries supplying the heart. Calcium may be an early sign of coronary heart disease,

and if performed early enough, a CT can help identify disease before permanent damage is done. “Each screening includes a consultation where we give the patient education on how to improve risk factors going forward and if there is any risk that needs to be addressed immediately we arrange everything so the patient can see a cardiologist,” Dr. Anderson said. During the consultation patients receive risk factor education, diet, weight and exercise recommendations, as well as a personalized report to take home. Know Your Heart is one of the efforts of the WellStar Cardiac Network to fight cardiac disease and provide people with the support they need to be successful. Unfortunately, heart disease – already the number one killer of men and women in the U.S. – is becoming even more prevalent. The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) recently released new figures showing a decrease in life expectancy for the first time since the early ‘90s. Experts credit this country’s growing problem with heart disease for these staggering statistics. The “Know Your Heart” screening is available to patients 18 years old and older and is especially good for people with high risk factors for heart disease, such as those with diabetes, hypertension and obesity. To determine eligibility and to schedule an appointment call 770-756-7827.

Acupuncture DEPRESSION HEALTH

A

for ANXIETY &

By Melissa Mulvaney, MAE, DiplAc, LAc

According to the Anxiety Disorders Association of America, anxiety disorders are the most common mental health disorder in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults and costing more than $42 billion a year. Feelings of anxiety, worry and fear related to significant and challenging events are justified and very common. Anxiety becomes a problem when emotional reactions are out of proportion with what might be “normally” expected in a situation, and when symptoms interfere with a person’s daily functioning or sleep patterns. Mild anxiety leaves a person feeling a bit unsettled, while severe anxiety can be extremely debilitating. Anxiety is used as a general term for several disorders that have common symptoms – such as nervousness, worrying, apprehension, and fear. Anxiety disorders can be classified into several more specific types including generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder, phobias, social anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In many Western schools of thought, anxiety disorders are considered to be dysfunctions in a person’s brain chemistry. An acupuncturist does not view anxiety as a brain dysfunction, but rather as an imbalance in a person’s organ system. In Classical Chinese Medicine, this imbalance is called Shan You Si (“anxiety & preoccupation”) and is believed to affect the main organs: the Heart, Lungs, Spleen, Liver, and Kidneys. Each organ is related

to different aspects of a person’s emotions. The role of the acupuncturist is to investigate underlying causes of the anxiety with a thorough diagnostic evaluation in order to determine which organ system is out of balance. The acupuncturist will then seek to restore the imbalance by inserting fine, sterile needles into the points correlating to those organs. Additionally, acupuncture helps to reduce stress and improve sleep, encouraging and supporting a greater sense of well-being and balance. Call for a complimentary consultation today, or join us at our office on November 7 for our class on treating anxiety, depression, and insomnia with acupuncture. Cost is $20. Seating is limited. To register for this special event, visit www.remedyhealingarts.com or call (770) 518-1785.

Festive Twist

By Claire Murphy

Over 100 Roswell students are performing in a holiday dance spectacular November 17-18 at Blessed Trinity Catholic High School. The production, “Once Upon a Holiday, A Festive Twist on the story of Alice in Wonderland,” is presented by SIDEWAYS, a contemporary dance company and is sure to excite big crowds.

F

Founded as a not-for-profit organization in 2006 by Charlotte Foster, SIDEWAYS was created to inspire change and present social and political opinions through dance. Through performances across the southeast, Contemporary Dance Company believes that family is at the heart of the holiday season. For the eleventh annual presentation of “Once Upon a Holiday, A FestiveTwist on the Story of Alice in Wonderland”, SIDEWAYS goes beyond tutus, tiaras, and tinsel to present a quirky combination of Alice in Wonderland, the Nutcracker and holiday cheer. The performance is November 17 – 19 at Blessed Trinity Catholic High School in Roswell, and includes over 100 student performers from local studio Atlanta Dance Central as well as the Foster-Schmidt Dance Company for Down Syndrome. SIDEWAYS combines jazz, ballet, contemporary, and ballroom dance to create this heart warming holiday presentation that is fun for the entire family. Conceptualized and choreographed by Artistic Director, Charlotte Foster Williamson, Once Upon A Holiday is more than just another silly holiday show - it’s a journey through Alice’s world as she discovers herself. “As we quest to discover who we truly are, we are exposed to many different people and situations, each of them shaping us in Once Upon A Holiday – some way. Even though we make wrong decisions and get lost along the way in our search, we A Festive Twist on the Story of always have family to return to and with that, Alice in Wonderland a home to call our own.” says Williamson. Through the donation of over 100 tickets to non-profit organizations, SIDEWAYS hopes to share the arts with children who would not otherwise have the opportunity to see dance. “All families can learn and grow together through the arts. We want to provide a jumping off point for families to begin traditions around the holidays that will help them re-connect and enjoy each other,” said Williamson. SIDEWAYS will be providing a special experience for Girl Scout Troops at the matinee performances.

November 17 and 18 at 7PM November 18 and 19 at 2PM

Graduating Magna Cum Laude from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Dance, Charlotte Foster currently serves as founder and artistic director of SIDEWAYS. Additionally, she serves as the studio owner and director of Atlanta Dance Central. Her most recent project includes founding the Foster-Schmidt Dance Academy for Down Syndrome with Vince Schmidt.

Local Experts Explain

PAIRING WINE WITH FOOD

W

With the holidays upon us, one of the most prevalent questions along with where to celebrate and developing the perfect menu that everyone will enjoy is, “What type of wine should we serve?” As the fascination with wine is ever growing, and more and more people are discovering which wines that they most enjoy, this question becomes more complex. What the bar manager at Peach & the Porkchop, Brendan McMackin boils it down to is, “Wine is all about personal preference, from the wines you enjoy sipping on their own, to those that you savor with a certain type of food. What we tell our guests during our Wednesday Wine Tastings is that everyone’s palate suits them, so if they enjoy a certain winery or varietal, that’s the wine you should seek out when visiting your local restaurant or wine store,” McMackin says. Ratings just don’t matter as much as personal preference. When guests visit Peach & the Porkchop, their seasoned bartenders inquire what type of wine they enjoy the most, and then wine experts make suggestions on wines that display similar characteristics. This enables guests to explore new wines within the same flavor profile. For those who are at a loss on where to begin, there are some wines that do pair especially well with certain foods. And, it’s always a good idea to have both a versatile red and white on hand to provide guests with an option. A

locallifepublishing.com

great way to kick off any gathering is with a wonderfully refreshing glass of bubbly. Whether you choose a Cava from Spain, a California sparkling wine, or a true Champagne from France, everyone is put in a festive mood with a glass of bubbly in their hand! A middle bodied white wine such as a non-oaky Chardonnay or Pinot Grigio are generally a safe bet to pair with turkey on Thanksgiving Day. As for reds, you can’t go wrong with a Merlot or Pinot Noir to enjoy alongside your turkey, gravy and stuffing. Now with more people personalizing the holidays, rather than serving traditional offerings like Christmas hams and fruitcakes, experimenting with wines can personalize the holidays even further. At Peach & the Porkchop they strive to educate their guests about all of the fabulous wine options out there, and using their flavor preferences, exposes them to wines that are off the beaten path. The holidays are a great time to share these treasured finds with friends and family. Wineries that have limited production, in many cases, have complex structures and certain nuances that are fun to explore during the holidays. Afterall, the holidays are about bringing people together, and there is nothing that brings people together more than enjoying delicious, high quality food along with wonderful wines.

CRAZY IN LOVE W/ THIS COFFEE

BY JENNIFER MEHALL

C

Crazy Love Coffeehouse is the name of the new coffee house on Canton Street in downtown Roswell. Its name comes from the bestseller book entitled Crazy Love and embodies more than just the best of local coffee beans. The book Crazy Love is about a God who loves us no matter what we’ve done or what we believe. Ministering to patrons over coffee can happen everyday; and bringing the joy of faith to others was the personal goal of Crazy Love’s owners Sandy and Perry Pettett. “When we opened in late May, we knew we were called to do this work,” Sandy said. Unexpectantly, when Sandy was diagnosed with breast cancer everything in their lives and businesses came to a halt, as they made the decision to focus only what matters most: their faith. They put their faith into action by opening a local

coffee shop with a Christian atmosphere. They explain they were simply following what they interpreted as promptings from God to do so. The unoccupied cottage on Canton Street was the perfect spot. The buildout and transition, “wasn’t easy.” As a designated historic site, progress was slow. Every detail had to meet the approval of the historical society, structurally and cosmetically. Prior to opening, they visited more than 100 coffee/tea shops in the Atlanta area. ‘We didn’t realize there were so many coffee places around,” laughed Sandy. In addition to the hot coffee, the menu offers homemade Belgian liege waffles. Theirs is a twist on the average waffle, encrusted with caramelized sugar bits and several topping options. The Pettetts say owning a business is hard work; but Crazy Love’s menu plus its faith-filled mission is designed to revive the mind, body and spirit.

REMEMBER. HONOR. TEACH.

W

What began in 1992 with a. trailer load of wreaths, decorated by volunteers and laid at the graves of fallen soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery has now become a national organization with over 1100 participating locations - all focused on the mission to REMEMBER, HONOR and TEACH. The Roswell Historical Society is honored to be a part of this annual remembrance. Since 2015, the Roswell Historical Society’s Cemetery Committee has raised funds to purchase wreaths to be placed on 240 veterans’ graves in four cemeteries: Lebanon Baptist, Pleasant Hill, Mount Oliver and Old Roswell Cemetery. Roswell volunteers join with thousands of other Wreaths Across America volunteers who simultaneously place wreaths on veterans graves in communities like ours across the U.S. The ceremony and laying of wreaths will take place at Noon on Saturday, December 16, 2017. Individuals or businesses can help by sponsoring a wreath(s) or helping distribute wreaths. Last year, in addition to the 240, Debbie Johnson coordinated volunteers at Roswell Presbyterian to lay an additional 32 wreaths at Founders’ Cemetery. The Roswell Historical Society then hosted the WAA ceremony with help from the Roswell High School Jr. ROTC, the Roswell High School Chorus, American Legion Post and the North Fulton VFW.
